Vitor Belfort - UFC Bound!

This weekend's UFC is right around the corner, and Brazilian Vitor Belfort is training in Las Vegas for the fight against Chuck Lidell. Vitor left Rio de Janeiro looking as focused as I have ever seen him. Vitor's critics say that Belfort's weak point is his mind, but this time he seems to be very clear headed.

Vitor left with his team composed of Paulo Caruso (conditioning trainer), Paulo Nikolai (Muay Thai trainer) and Darrel Gholar, the American wrestling wizard. They all verified that Vitor is in a great shape and that nobody should miss this fight!

The fight is coming, only 3 days left......

Bas Rutten Wrestles in Japan!

Ken Shamrock isn't the only MMA competitor who's making a go in pro wrestling. It seems more 'fighters' are starting to look towards pro wrestling.

Bas Rutten, who has a strong following in Japan and definite star 'charisma', has apparently joined New Japan Pro Wrestling (Japan's largest pro wrestling organization).

In his debut, Bas 'wrestled' on June 5 and scored a choke submission. The match ended with Rutten sustaining a pretty nasty eye injury (accidental eye gouge tore some skin off the side of the eyelid).

The NJPW show on June 7, 2002 at Budokan Hall Bas Rutten had his second pro wrestling match in Japan. Rutten scored a 'knockout' victory over Masayuji Naruse in 5:27 with a kick to the head. Later in the show Rutten congratulated champion Yuji Nagata after a title defense. Bas rubbed the belt, like he admired it, and Naruse 'took offense' to his actions and a mob had to hit the ring to pull them apart.

Rutten will face Naruse for the title on July 20, 2002. Not a bad gig considering Bas hasn't been in pro wrestling long. New Japan is the company that signs Don Frye's checks (a six-figure salary for a small amount of bookings).

UFC Pre Fight Interview: NICK SERRA

NICK SERRA, is not the Terror, but is still a nightmare on the Mat. Nick, the younger brother of Matt Serra, is an excellent fighter in his on right. Matt has amassed an amazing MMA and grappling record that rivals anyone in the sport. His brother's accomplishments have led the way for Nick to fight in the UFC and he is proud of the Serra heritage. Do not try to compare his game to Matt's. He has his own style that evolved out of the same background as his brothers', Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Nick will enter the Octagon for the first time on June 22, against Benji Radach who is 11-0-0 from Olympia, Wash. This is what Nick had to say about his upcoming fight.

ADCC: Nick, how's everything going? Nick: Good, laid off pizza and pasta for three weeks. I have fully recovered from my car wreck, it knocked me out for about a year.

ADCC: Tell us a little bit about your fighting background? Nick: We both got into it at same time. Our father trained us in Kung Fu and fighting when we were little. On the street, in school and everywhere, we liked to fight. My father knows all the good places to train. He's the one who got us into BJJ. We both started at the same time with Renzo. We figured it is better to be the guys choking instead of the ones choked. I am the second American Blackbelt, of course matt being the first.

ADCC: What is your training like right now? Nick: It is rough! I am training everyday. In the morning a couple hours and night couple of hours. I am sparring a couple of times a week, Boxing. My boxing skills are well taken care of My stand up instructor is Ray Longo and of course, I train with Renzo twice a week.

ADCC: Who is older, you or Matt? Nick: Matt is four years older, I'm 24 and he is 28.

ADCC: How does your style compare to Matt's... Nick: It is a little different, still very aggressive but a different style of BJJ. I go for different kinds of moves. Our body builds are different. We flow through the moves differently.

ADCC: Has Matt's fighting experience helped you in preparing for this fight? Nick: O yeah, Matt shows me the tricks. He has been the more active brother.

ADCC: Do you feel that Matt's career has overshadowed yours as of late? Nick: No, we both celebrate the same way, with pizza in hand. I love my brother and am proud of him and his accomplishments.

ADCC: Has Renzo been helping you train? He is getting ready to fight also? Nick: Yeah, twice a week. He helps me train the most. I am one of his sparring partners.

ADCC: What is your ring experience? Nick: I am 5-0 in no rules. All of them were tough matches.

ADCC: When was your last fight? Nick: My last fight was at the Vanderbilt. I put the dude to sleep with my legs. I kicked him off of me and he woke up and took a swing at me. Matt jumped into the ring and there was a riot in the ring. The ring even collapsed. The crowd was fighting! It was wild.

ADCC: This fight is not on PPV, but might be on FOX, is that a bigger incentive to fight well? Nick: yeah, I am in it for the battle.

ADCC: If Matt is the Terror, what are you? Nick: I don't know, yet. No Nickname yet!

ADCC: What do you know about your opponent? Nick: 1-0 in UFC and real good wrestler and boxer. He has really fast hands.

ADCC: How does your style meet up against his? Nick: We gotta wait and see. We will both be aggressive.

ADCC: Thanks for your time, and good luck. Nick: Take care, Frank.

Viloria wins WBC title

Waipahu's Brian Viloria lands a solid shot against Francisco Soto during a nationally televised World Boxing Council Youth flyweight championship bout in Del Mar, Calif. Viloria, 21, won the title open to fighters 23 and younger.

DEL MAR, Calif. — Waipahu's Brian Viloria stopped Francisco Soto with a left hook in the fifth round yesterday to win the World Boxing Council Youth World flyweight title.

“I knew I was ready for this and the power was there,” said a happy Brian Viloria.
Lenny Ignelzi • The Associated Press

Youth titles are open to fighters ages 23 and younger.

Viloria, 21, a former world amateur champion and 2000 Olympian, dominated the bout with powerful hooks to the head and body. Soto hit the canvas in the second and third rounds before succumbing in the fifth.

"I knew I was ready for this and the power was there," Viloria said. "I just had to wait and land that really good punch. I tried to stay in there with him and he was in there with me. Mexican guys are always tough."

It was the sixth knockout for Viloria (8-0). Soto's record is 13-6.

The referee stopped the scheduled 10-round bout at 1:18 in the fifth, seconds after Soto staggered to feet.

"I didn't want to rush myself and get careless," Viloria said. "The fight didn't seem like it lasted five rounds. Soto was really stubborn."

It was just the second time Viloria has gone more than four rounds. In his previous fight last month in Hawai'i, Viloria knocked out Sandro Oviedo in 38 seconds.

Viloria said he should be ready for a major title shot in about a year.

"I'm not in a rush," he said. "I'm just taking things one fight at a time. I'm preparing myself for each fight. Whatever my management tells me, or when they think I'm ready. I'll be ready."

KEN SHAMROCK SIGNS UFC DEAL!

Nationally syndicated sports columnist Alex Marvez (South Florida Sun-Sentinel) recently did an interview with Ken Shamrock just three days ago and broke major news.

Shamrock made the statement that he had signed a three-fight deal with UFC and will face Tito Ortiz in September for the 205 lbs LIGHTHEAVYWEIGHT championship.

Shamrock is taking the fight serious and turned down a six-figure guarantee with the WWF to get three more fights in. The 'World's Most Dangerous Man' will honor his three-fight deal and retire from MMA to a career in pro wrestling.

As it stands right now, SHAMROCK VS. ORTIZ is getting much closer to being a reality for September!

The new 'pro wrestling' group headed up by pro wrestlers Jerry and Jeff Jarrett will run weekly Pay-Per-View events on cable and satellite systems throughout North America. The first taping is this Wednesday from Huntsville, AL (check local listings). It is reported that Shamorck will appear on these pro wrestling shows for now.

Ken Shamrock has done several interviews in the past couple of weeks regarding his fighting career as well.

Ken Shamrock will debut on PPV for Jarret's pro wrestling group this week for the NWA TNA this week or next.

Ricardo Almeida Interview

Ricardo 'Big Dog' Almeida has been absent from competition since his fight in UFC35 but he hasn't been absent from the game. This interview took place the afternoon of Mass Destruction VIII where Almeida was cornering for his protégés Josh Madama and Andy Ruggerio.

KM: So what happened to the hand? RA: I broke my hand sparring. Right here, I broke this bone. I had to (have) this titanium plate so I'm out until at least the end of July. Until the end of July I can't hit anything.

KM: How did that happen? RA: I just threw a left hook on top of the guy's head and it broke right here. (Indicates side of hand)

KM: So you're here supporting the Renzo fighters? RA: Yeah, I have like two guys fighting and I think Shannon is fighting too. (Note: Shannon Logan fights out of the main Renzo academy. Her missing blood work caused her fight to be canceled.) Renzo is leaving for Japan tomorrow so he won't be able to come and I'm leaving Friday because my wife's pregnant. That's what is going on right now.

KM: I heard you're a newlywed or a couple months now. Congratulations. So you're turning into a family man. RA: Yeah.

KM: You have your own academy? RA: Yeah, I have my own place in South Jersey.

KM: How's that going? RA: Going great. I have a lot of good guys. Actually last week we had four guys compete in the Kimono Combat. All the guys that were there they all won except one guy who took 3rd place.

KM: I don't think you've fought since UFC35. What were your thoughts on that fight? RA: It was a tough fight. I thought I fought well although the result wasn't what I was expecting I thought it was a good fight. It was more the way I played my strategy than anything. I just went out like crazy trying to finish the guy, finish the guy, finish the guy. In the last one we saw how flexible he is. If I knew how good he was at the submission escapes definitely if I had some better tapes on him it would have been a different fight but no excuses. That day he was better than me. He was able to get me and I wasn't able to get him. It was a good fight and it gave me a lot of experience. I'll be a lot better fighter next time.

KM: Can we expect to see you back in the UFC or Pride in the summer? RA: Definitely before the end of the summer you guys are going to see me fight.

KM: Have UFC or Pride shown interest or… RA: Japan. Probably Japan.

KM: But no word yet? RA: No word yet.

KM: You have to tell ADCC first so we can get the word out. RA: I'll tell you guys first. I'll probably have something more definite when I come back from Japan next week.

KM: You're still in Team Renzo. As far as the Team Renzo domination of the grappling tournaments it seems like there's no stopping the 10 academies under Team Renzo. RA: It just shows that jiu-jitsu just like any other sport has the big schools that have the tradition. They really learn from what I believe are the true sources of the sport. I think jiu-jitsu most likely if you have a good school you can trace it back to Brazil and to Rio de Janeiro. That's where it came from. I just think that Renzo's school here in the US and just like the biggest schools in Brazil, even the Machado schools in California, they are the schools that have the most technical guys and they have the better teachers and that's showing in the competitions. What I think is great especially here in the East Coast they have a lot of grappling tournaments that allow people from other martial arts or wrestlers to compete and eventually they'll only bring the level up.

Maxfighting's Vitor Belfort vs Chuck Liddell Predictions

MaxPicks for Liddell vs. Belfort - June 22, 2002

Bruce Buffer -- Chuck Liddell - 3 RD. Decision
(Chuck will use leg kicks immediately to fend off Vitor's punches and take downs until he gets his distance working, in order to land the big counter punch. Chuck will want to knock him out and if this happens, it will be in the second round. Vitor will get frustrated exchanging punches and will hope to get Chuck on the ground, which will not happen due to his sprawl technique. Hopefully the fight will be full of action and if Chuck doesn't knock him out, it will be Chuck by DECISION after 3 rounds.)

Thomas Gerbasi -- Belfort by controversial decision

Josh Gross -- Liddell by split decision
(This fight should have taken place in May for the interim UFC light heavyweight title, but neither of those things happened and we're left with a fight that will effectively knock off one opponent for champ Tito Ortiz. So, what will happen? Belfort will come to fight, and he'll be successful early. But Liddell will weather the storm and start to impose his will on Belfort in round two. Unable to KO, or take down Liddell without gassing out, Belfort will become frustrated and start to slow -- maybe even back peddle. Belfort's solid chin will be his only saving grace, and he'll lose a split decision.)

Joe Hall -- Liddell by decision
(Vitor Belfort has a wealth of potential: speed and power standing, sufficient takedowns, and a solid ground game. His career has been an especially inconsistent endeavor, however, as he has popped in and out of the sport and his striking has seemingly disappeared. Chuck Liddell, on the other hand, is a seasoned veteran who has actively fought top competition since entering MMA. His proven ability to focus on the sport and matches at hand will be a psychological advantage, if nothing else. To win, Belfort must be mentally primed, and he must employ his entire repertoire. It's possible, but I just don't see him suddenly pulling everything full circle. Even if Belfort resurrects his quick and heavy standup, I think Liddell will counter accordingly. "The Iceman" is too smart to stand in front of Belfort's barrage; he will move around the Octagon and chip away with kicks. I feel Belfort's best chance is to take down Liddell, which I believe he can do, and see what opens up on the ground. However, each time Liddell is put on the mat, I think he will quickly work back to his feet before Belfort scores any significant offense. In the end, 15 minutes will be too little time for a finish, and Liddell will win a close decision after landing more on the feet.)

Johnny Mendoza -- Chuck Liddell wins by Ref Stoppage in Round 3
(I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that Chuck will do a repeat of what occurred in Couture vs. Belfort. Belfort will try for some straight punches which he will not be able to land with Chuck. I don't believe Belfort will do that for long and will quickly try to take Chuck down. Chuck will be able to avoid Belfort's attacks until he becomes tired and frustrated. By round 3, I predict that Chuck will have worn Belfort down enough to mount a nice attack, which will cause the ref to stop the fight.)

Jason Probst -- Belfort by decision
(Vitor's striking ability neutralizes Liddell's standup...Vitor eventually goes to the ground, where his experience fighting bigger men gives him the advantage. He pounds his way to a decision win.)

Jake Rossen -- Liddell by decision
(I don't see how Liddell will lose this fight. Just look at the last twelve months for both men. The entire time that Belfort has remained inactive, content to frolic on Brazilian TV, Liddell has kept busy by defeating Kevin Randleman, Guy Mezger, Murilo Bustamante, and Amar Suloev. One can point to an amazing year for Chuck, whereas you have to go back to 1998 to dig up an impressive Belfort performance, his KO victory over Silva. I feel this fight has parallels to the Tyson/Lewis bout. Belfort's name can be marketed from his performances in years past, whereas the true workhorse in Liddell gets overlooked because he's not overly flashy. In the end, the fighter who has remained active against top competition will break down the marquee star who hasn't. Sound familiar? As in the Tyson bout, it would be great to see Belfort come out with both guns blazing. But reality and logic dictates that Liddell will ride out a decision, unless Belfort really pushes him. In that case, it could be a KO victory for The Iceman.)

PRIDE RUMOR: Steibling To Take on Silva?

With the late injury to BTT's Paulo Filho (suffered a torn ligament to his knee in his last traiing session prior to leaving for PRIDE), PRIDE is left looking for a matchup for Chute Boxe's Anderson Silva. Word coming from the USA is that PRIDE has asked the 'Brazilian Killa' Alex Steibling to return on short notice and fight Anderson.

With PRIDE's event less than a week away (it is scheduled for June 23rd, 2002 at the Saitama Super Arena), PRIDE may also be exploring options to fill this spot with a Japanese fighter.

PRIDE RUMOR: Paulo Filho Out!
Today bad news came from the Brazilian Top Team camp: it appears that their young talent, Paulo Filho, who was to fight Anderson Silva in the next Pride (scheduled for June 23rd), lamentably injured his left knee in his last training session prior to the battle. Judging from Filho's last competition two weeks back, when he beat Leopoldo Serão in the Submission event 2nd Copa Stone, we can say he was more than ready for this fight. This match was expected to be a battle, continuing the new 'professional rivalry' between BTT and Chute Boxe. No replacement is clear at this time.

Paulo Filho in and then out of Pride
Paulo Filho Out of Pride 21
By Eduardo Alonso

Paulo Filho has been looking forward to his PRIDE debut, unfortunately his entry to Japan's premier MMA event will have to be temporarily put on hold. The Brazilian Top Team fighter injured his knee during his last training session before leaving to Japan. Paulo says that he will take some time to heal and promises to be back in training in 3 weeks. He will most likely make his PRIDE debut as soon as he is recovered.

Heating up for PRIDE 21: Paulo Filho Finally Getting his Chance!

Coming from the Brazilian Top Team and with wins over the likes of Yuki Kondo and Ikuhisa Minowa, Paulo Filho finally comes to PRIDE with some very good credentials, despite being only 23 years old. With very explosive takedowns and a dominant "Ground and Pound" game, Filho has also been training a lot of standing up fighting to improve his style and mark his name among PRIDE's top competitors. Paulao, like he is known by his teammates, knows the meaning of this opportunity for his career, and between him and his goal to establish himself in PRIDE's Middleweight division is non-other than Chute Boxe rising start Anderson Silva. The Brazilian Top Team member knows how dangerous Anderson can be, and if you add to the mix the currently well-commented Chute Boxe vs. Brazilian Top Team rivalry, you won't have to wonder a lot why many are considering this the best match on the PRIDE 21 card! On a quick conversation just two days before leaving for Japan, Paulo Filho shared with FCF his views on this fight and much more. Keep checking our news page to see what Anderson Silva has to say about the fight in the next couple of days, as FCF looks to heat us all up for PRIDE 21!

FCF: You have been standing out for a long time, but only now you finally got your shot at PRIDE. Were you anxious for this chance?
PF: PRIDE is a mega-event, and it's the biggest NHB event in the world in my opinion, so I believe it's every fighter's dream to participate at a PRIDE event, fighting with the stars of the event. This opportunity appeared and I have to confess that I'm enjoying it a lot, and I'll do everything I can to stay in the event, winning, and become one of PRIDE's great names as well.

FCF: Coming from the Brazilian Top Team, you get to PRIDE with some great credentials. Besides that, you already beat some top Japanese fighters, like Ikuhisa Minowa and Yuki Kondo. How do you think the Japanese public is going to react towards you?
PF: I'm already well known in Japan because I fought against some famous fighters from Japan, and I think that depending on my next fight things can improve or get worst for me there! (Laughs) Every time I fought in Japan, even beating Japanese fighters, I always got a good reception from the public, always talked to everybody, took pictures with the fans and stuff like that. So I think that my relation with the Japanese public is good, we don't have any problems, besides the Brazilian Top Team is very liked there, as is the Chute Boxe team too! The people in Japan are fans of the Chute Boxe team, so I think the public won't take sides on this fight and the result of the fight will be more important.

FCF: You have been considered by the NHB press one of the best in your weight division for a considerable amount of time. Do you think about moving up in weight a bit to pursuit the Middleweight title in PRIDE?
PF: My regular weight is 90 kg! And my division goes till 93kg!

FCF: But you used to fight with less than 90kg...
PF: Yeah, I already fought at 85kg. This was the lightest weight I manage to fight under. But it was tough! My ideal weight is around 89 or 90kg. I'll be weighting 90kg for this fight!

FCF: Since you're weighing 90kg, and I know it's a bit too early to say, but how are you going to handle a title pursuit in PRIDE, with your friends Ricardo Arona and Rogerio Nogueira also fighting in the same division?
PF: Ricardo is a very good friend of mine, but we're professionals. I would never fight him, he is a close friend, but I think we should handle it in the best possible way. But I don't have any intentions to fight him, Rogerio, anyone from the Brazilian Top Team or even anyone from Jiu Jitsu for that matter. I don't have this sort of problems. We will sit and talk, and if the opportunity appears the title will stay with the one who deserves it more! Apart from any belts, I think this is a personal issue and I have character, so I won't ever hinder my friends in any situations like this.

FCF: By the way, is there anyone in special you would like to face in the future?
PF: I have to tell you that I respect a lot the Chute Boxe team, they are all great professionals and great athletes, but I think they could be a bit more humble. I think that they became, with time and due to all the wins, a bit arrogant. So I think that facing any fighter from the Chute Boxe team fighter is a great challenge and a great incentive for me. No matter who it is, like Vanderlei Silva, Ninja or even Anderson Silva for instance. Whatever comes my way I think it's great.

FCF: What about a fight against Sakuraba? You two are close in weight, and he beat a lot of Jiu Jitsu fighters in the past. Would you like to face him?
PF: Without a doubt! I respect Sakuraba a lot! He is the best Japanese fighter in my opinion, and he is a very courageous guy, very respected! He would be a very tough fight for any fighter, and despite the fact that I'm explosive or strong, I believe it would be a great fight! Not only against me, but against any top level fighter, because Sakuraba is among the very best in the game! So it would be a great honor for me to face him!

FCF: At PRIDE 21 you are going to face Anderson Silva, from the Chute Boxe team. What do you think about Anderson as a fighter?
PF: He is a good person as far as I know. People say he is not an arrogant guy like Vanderlei or Pele. People say good things about him, like he is a very tranquil guy and stuff like that. I already watched some of his fights, he even fought Juan Carneiro, and I helped Juan in his preparation for that fight. We're always following the work of those who are doing well, and I think he is an excellent opponent. I don't know how much he is weighing, because he is reported to be gaining some weight to fight at the 90kg division. I respect him as an opponent and I wish him good luck, because we're on the same boat! Fighting to earn our money, and pay our bills. I think that every guy who steps in an NHB ring to fight deserves respect.

FCF: Did his fight at the last MECA, against Brazilian Top Team member Juan Carneiro, served as an example for your preparation?
PF: A lot! Juan was surprised by Anderson's jabs, and he was surprised with a position on the ground as well. So I'm also preparing based on the things I could see on his fight against Juan. Besides all the things I already knew about Anderson's game, I'm also preparing for those things he managed to do in his fight against Juan. Everything serves as a learning base, so I'm using everything! From Anderson's previous fights, to his fight against Juan, and I'm preparing my fight strategy based on all of that.

FCF: So you're a fighter that likes to have a strategy planned before the fight?
PF: Nowadays there's no such thing as a fighter stepping inside the ring to see what will happen during the fight. With the professional level the game is reaching, and even the monetary level the game is reaching, I think no one can enter a fight with that old mentality "It doesn't matter! I'm a brawler and I'm going to brawl! Let's see what happens!" I believe nowadays everybody knows something, everybody knows the ground game, everybody knows how to fight standing and everybody knows the takedowns. So, the better you know your opponent's game, the bigger are your chances to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

FCF: The fact that he is a Chute Boxe fighter, and all that rivalry between the teams talk, motivates you even more for this fight?
PF: I still wasn't able to get this rivalry thing to a personal level. I'm an athlete that already competes for several years. I competed a lot in Judo when I was a kid. I also competed a lot in Jiu Jitsu, as a matter of fact I train in Judo since I was 5 years old, so I'm already well used to competition! Therefore I don't use to let any personal issues come in to play. What motivates me is that they have a very strong team, and they are well-respected athletes! It's always good to fight against people that if you win you get even more respected. This is the only thing that motivates me more for this fight! The fact that he has a very high technical level, the fact that he belongs to a very strong team and that he is very respected. They're team is showing with their results that they're the best team in the world right now, and that's what motivates me.

FCF: Anderson has a very technical Muay Thai, and you have been training a lot of Muay Thai lately with Luis. Can we also expect some surprises standing up in this fight?
PF: It's like I told you, he knows some ground game and I know some stand up fighting as well now. People think that because you're a Jiu Jitsu fighter you don't know how to fight standing up, and it's not the case! I'm training a lot of Muay Thai with Artur Mariano, who is a Luis Alves student! He is a great guy and has been showing a lot of things for me! He is a very tough guy and even beat Vanderlei Silva once. He has been helping me a lot, and he's preparing me very well on the technical part of stand up fighting. So I think that if I make a mistake on the ground, or if he makes a mistake standing up some surprises can happen!

FCF: You are a very explosive fighter, with a very strong ground game. Even though it's very tough to imagine what is going to happen in a fight, how do you believe your styles will clash and this fight is going to unfold?
PF: Well, since I'm a ground fighter, my strategy, not only mine but any ground fighter's strategy, is to close the distance and do my Jiu Jitsu game. I happen to like to strike a lot in the ground. There are some fighters, like Murilo Bustamante or Minotauro, who likes to get the positions and lock some submissions on the ground. I consider myself a bit more aggressive. I like to strike from any place! From the mount, from inside the guard, or from the half-guard. I like to strike a lot! So I think my strategy would be like this, close the distance, to avoid his jabs and strikes, manage to take him down and from there on impose my game. It doesn't matter where I will land, on the guard, half-guard, or mounted. I will want to strike! This is my game. And if in the middle of all those strikes I can get an arm, or a neck or anything like it, I'll go for it! I'm prepared to fight for an hour if needed! It's a tough fight and I know I won't have an easy time there. I'm sure it will be one of the toughest fights of my life; even counting the ones I'll do in the future!

FCF: How was your preparation for this fight?
PF: This fight came in a bit suddenly! It was a fight that I wasn't really expecting. I was training very hard, very focused, but I wasn't expecting to fight in this PRIDE, I thought I would fight in the next one. Because of that I varied my training a lot. I didn't do any specific training to face Anderson. I was training a lot of things. I was training Muay Thai, I was training ground game, I was training wrestling, doing a lot of things. Each weekday I tried to do something different. I was doing my physical preparation every day, and was doing lots of different things in terms of technical training. On Monday I was doing Boxing, on Tuesday I was doing wrestling, on Wednesday I was doing Jiu Jitsu, and from then on. When I found out I was going to fight Anderson, I started to do some specific training. In the last ten days or so I was able to do some more specific preparation for Anderson Silva. But all that training I did previously, doing all those things, improved me a lot as a fighter. I ended up becoming more versatile.

FCF: Was it tough to prepare without knowing for sure whether you were going to fight or not?
PF: Without a doubt! But since PRIDE is the best event in the world, and the one who pays the fighters the most, with the best fighters in the world, I believe it may be a bit complicated for them to schedule the fights in advance. I also think that when you decide to become a NHB fighter, you can't get that worried with who you're going to face. As an NHB fighter, and since I like NHB a lot, I already know the aspects of every top fighter in my division's game. I'm very interested in the game, so I already know how Vanderlei fights, how Anderson fights, how Sakuraba fights. I already know most aspect of their games! So I don't need that much time to adapt. Of course the specific part of the preparation is very important, but if things needs to be that way, I don't see any problems! Because it goes both ways! This happens to me but it also happens to him.

FCF: What are your plans for after this fight in PRIDE 21?
PF: I expect to stay in PRIDE and show the world what I'm capable of doing. I expect them to put me against the best in the game, because a fighter's career is relatively short, so winning or losing I'm looking to be respected in the future for what I done, facing the toughest fighters. So I expect to stay in the event, facing the best and showcasing my skills to the world.

FCF: Any final message for your fans?
PF: I hope that they'll keep following NHB, because here in Brazil people give a lot of value to Soccer, and I would like to see people paying more attention to the combat sports, because Brazil is always producing great athletes and in my opinion is the best place in the world when it comes to fighting. I would like people to give the fighters their props more often, because it's a very tough life! What a Soccer player makes here in one month we don't make in a year, and our training routine is very tough, we have to give up on a lot of things in life in order to be a fighter. So it would be good if some companies, and even the fans could support the fighters, because fighters in general have a very tough life, and we are always making a lot of efforts to carry our country's name abroad. I hope people will give it more value, despite the results a fighter achieves.

FCF: Good luck and thanks a lot!
PF: Thanks a lot!

Don Frye's Last Fight?

Frye: 'This May be It'
By Joe Hall

Don Frye's name was already etched in the history books of mixed martial arts. He had left his mark and moved on to the wild world of professional wrestling. As a "heel" (bad guy), he was making good, steady money but was also being tugged in a different direction.

After a nearly five-year absence from MMA, he finally relented to his wrenching desire: He left professional wrestling and returned to real fighting. The motivation behind his comeback was clear.

"The driving force was to fight [Mark] Coleman," Frye said. "I'm a resentful bastard. He beat me. I wanted to try to avenge my loss for my own ego, but I also wanted to gather up some money for my family so that I could secure a good future for them." After three successful return bouts, Frye's second shot at "The Hammer" was set for Pride 21. Just last week, however, Coleman suffered a devastating injury, and the long awaited rematch fell through. Now, it is unclear if the fight will ever happen, and Frye is contemplating his future in the sport.

Frye's return started roughly at Pride 16. Facing frequent rule breaker Gilbert Yvel, Frye's performance was a far cry from his dominant days in the UFC. He was rocked on the feet by Yvel's superior standup and began to hobble shortly into the bout with an injury. The disappointing match worsened when Yvel illegally grabbed the ropes to prevent Frye from taking him down. Yvel later resorted to eye gouging and was eventually disqualified for his despicable tactics. Although he won, Frye was unsatisfied.

His next fight was different -- a step toward "The Predator" of old. Facing kickboxer Cyril Abidi at Inoki Bom-ba-ye 2001, Frye convincingly finished his foe with a rear naked choke. Even though Abidi had little knowledge on the ground, it was a quality win for Frye, who was readying himself for a showdown against Ken Shamrock.

During his absence from MMA, Frye developed a bitter rivalry with the fellow UFC legend. He consistently criticized Shamrock and all but begged him for a meeting in the ring. Frye's critical remarks were likely veiled attempts to lure Shamrock into a fight. When that finally happened at Pride 19, Frye won the classic 20-minute battle between the two venerable combatants.

After such a courageous performance by both men, Frye hopes the bad blood has ended. "We fought each other for 20 minutes," Frye said. "He's got my respect; that's for damn sure."

"I never really expected Ken to step up like he did," Frye continued. "It really impressed the hell out of me. What he did, how he fought, his strength -- he's a lot stronger than what I anticipated; he's a lot tougher. I hit him with a bunch of shots that anybody else, they would have caved their ribs in. He took about forty of them suckers. I looked at him after each round; it didn't look like he was going to get up, but he did."

Frye had his own astonishing displays of heart. When trapped in a series of heel hooks and lower body submission attempts by Shamrock, Frye refused to tap. For most men, to continue would not have been a choice; to quit would have been instinctual for those who felt the snap and heard the tearing that was Frye's ankles and knees. "I had no reason to tap," he said. "Oh, it hurt. Hell yeah. He gave me a hairline fracture in my right ankle, and sprained my left ankle, and a small tear in the meniscus in my left knee. But it wasn't that bad. Injuries heal, pride doesn't."

Even though his fight against Shamrock was monumental, Frye feels stepping into the ring with Coleman for a second time would "most definitely" outdo it. "They're both tough as nails," said Frye of Coleman and Shamrock. "I just think that Coleman and I are more equally comparable."

The epic bout may never happen, though. It was scheduled for Pride 21, but a freak training accident rendered Coleman temporarily paralyzed, and the match was abruptly cancelled. Frye's agent was the first to inform him of the calamity. "[He] called me up and the first thing he said was Mark Coleman broke his neck," said Frye, who learned later that Coleman had injured his neck but it was not broken. "It really scared me. I felt like it was my fault because I felt like I was pressuring him into this fight. I forced Pride to cancel his previous fight [so he could] fight me. This was going to be his last match, and he was scheduled to have it against Semmy Schilt in the Pride before. Naturally, I felt like it was my fault."

Not only did he feel guilty, Frye knew the rematch that had gnawed him away from professional wrestling had just slipped through his hands. Training has suffered since, as Frye's desire quickly drained following Coleman's withdrawal. "It's dropped off really bad," he admitted of his preparation. "It really broke my heart that Coleman got hurt. I was more terrified for Mark than I was disappointed. Once I found out he was all right, it turned to extreme disappointment. Mark's a great champion. I think he's the most decorated fighter in mixed martial arts. I was really looking forward to competing against him."

The process to find a replacement began immediately; however, Frye had no input in the matter. "Pride runs the show; they're in control of every situation," he told MaxFighting. "It's my responsibility to train and show up ready to fight whoever they throw in front of me. It doesn't matter who the hell they give me, you got to fight them all anyways."

Numerous names were mentioned as possibilities, including Heath Herring and Kevin Randleman, before Pride settled on Yoshihiro Takayama. Although he is a significant draw in Japan because of his professional wrestling background, Takayama is winless in Pride. The Japanese heavyweight certainly is not Mark Coleman either, but Frye contends the task at hand will not be easy. "He's six-foot-six, 270 pounds," Frye said. "He's as strong as a horse. Anybody who steps in the ring is dangerous. He's knowledgeable about submissions and strikes and he takes a good punch."

"It should be an exciting fight," Frye said. He then paused briefly before continuing, "It would be a good finish to my career, if that's what happens."

Frye's ambition to avenge his only loss has not only enveloped him, it has also affected other aspects of his life. "I got problems at home, and the fight game itself is the main reason I'm having problems at home," he said. "I'm trying to figure out what my future is going to be."

For the first time in years, Frye sounds as though he may finally be ready to let go of his single defeat. "This may be it," he reiterated of his upcoming fight at Pride 21. "If losing to Coleman is my only loss, so be it. He's a great champion. He did beat me. He deserved it, and there's nothing to be ashamed of by losing to Mark Coleman."

Something greater than revenge seems to be looming over the delicate decision of a prolonged fight career. Growing up, Frye wanted to be many things. "I wanted to be a fireman; I did that," he said. "I wanted to be a cowboy; I did that. I wanted to have a world championship belt; I did that. I wanted to be a good husband and a good father; I hope I can pull that off."

The valiant warrior, who ruled the UFC years ago and has returned as a serious threat to any heavyweight in the world, would not close the door on the issue of his retirement, however. "I'm lucky enough, blessed by God, to pull another one out of my hat," Frye said. "There's always one more."

BJ Penn Interview

Kid Peligro Jiu-Jitsu News . . . B J Penn Speaks ! ! !

It seems like B J Penn has been around for a long time. He first made a splash in 2000 when he became the first American World BJJ Champion in his first competition as a Black Belt. But the rumblings about his talents have been going on for longer than that, much longer. Ever since he was a Blue Belt insiders spoke of the Hawaiian kid that was to be the Michael Jordan of BJJ.

After winning the Worlds, BJ turned his attention to NHB, the U.F.C. to be more specific where he had a meteroric rise. BJ quickly defeated Joey Gilbert in his UFC debut and followed up with stunning knock outs of Din Thomas and Caol Uno on his way to a title match with Champion Jens Pulver.

As he prepared to fight the Champion, expectations were running high, it wasn't a matter of 'if' but more of a matter of 'how' BJ was going to beat Pulver. BJ didn't pay attention to any of the hype and prepared himself to fight the fight of his life. And fight he did, for 5 long rounds, BJ gave everything he had against the Champion, only to end up losing by decision with great personal disappointment.

It was back to the drawing board for BJ. The next time he fought against newcomer but super tough Creighton, a new and more mature BJ showed up. We were curious to find out what was going on with Penn and contacted him to get the Inside Scoop. Here it is ! ! !

KP: How was fighting Jens Pulver?
BJ: I didn't like the fight. I overtrained really bad. I didn't take a break after the Uno fight, I just trained straight through. My training partners Tony De Souza and Charuto kept telling me to slow down, but I didn't listen. If you watch the fight my cardio was perfect, but my body felt weak and dead. I fought so bad that I should have gotten finished. But I never once felt that I was in danger or hurt.

KP: On your next fight against Paul Creighton you seemed like a much more mature fighter. What did you learn from that fight about yourself and about fighting in general?
BJ: With the Paul Creighton fight, I learned how to train right. I didn't beat my body up in the gym and if I needed rest I would take it. I was in great shape for the Paul Creighton fight. One thing that fight made me realize is how good I am. Although it wasn't as exciting as the Din or Uno fight, it was one of my favorite fights. I definitely feel more mature and relaxed in my fights. If I always fight like that, I can't lose.

KP: Did you change your training and preparation because of the Jens fight ?
BJ: I changed my training alot. I now realize that I was overtrained for every fight before the Creighton fight.

KP: What is next for you? Who would you like to fight?
BJ: I want the belt and then I want to fight Pulver and then beat Gomi. I want to be pound for pound the greatest fighter.

KP: Who are you fighting next?
BJ: I want the belt! I know I am automatically the next in line for the Title. I think I should fight Gomi for the Belt and then fight Jens. I shouldn't have to do any elimination fights for the belt.

KP: What can we expect from you in your next fight?
BJ: I will destroy my next opponent. No matter what round it ends, he will be beat down. I pray that Shooto lets me fight Gomi, but it will be hard with all the politics. I just want to fight the best!!

I am also revamping my website www.BJPENN.com and I will have a lot of information up really soon. I would also like to thank all my fans for supporting me b/c without you this sport wouldn't be here.

KP: Thanks BJ and much success!
BJ: Thanks Kid!

The Return of RICKSON GRACIE?

The mystique of Rickson Gracie appears again, as he recently donned the cover of Japan's Gong Kakutogi magazine. Word is that HE will not return in 2002, but the possibility of a match in 2003 is left open.

After Rickson's last appearance at Colosseum 2000, his fans have been left with the lingering question: When will he be back?

His last fight was against Pancrase idol Masakatsu Funaki. Although many believed Funaki would beat Rickson, the opposite occurred. Rickson choked the Japanese star unconscious in an action-packed fight.

Following the fight, rumors arose that Rickson would fight again soon. However, Rickson was to face his toughest opponent yet, when his son Rockson, passed away in a tragic accident. Many journalists, including this one, felt Rickson couldn't return from such a devastating blow. It appeared to most that a 40 year old fighter with nothing to prove couldn't find the enthusiasm to return to the ring after such a difficult time.

But rumors began to appear recently, as Rickson was in Japan to promote his new photobook earlier this year. Some reported that he'd fight in his own event against a Japanese ProWrestler named Riku Choshu*, however that was never confirmed. The other strong possibility was a fight in another Japanese organization known as UFO in August. However, Rickson requires his usual six months of preparation time, so that option seems to be out.

With mention of the possibility of his own event, and the fact that his movie project has been canceled, it appears clear to this reporter that Rickson will fight again in 2003.

The question remains: Who will he fight? Will it be Choshu, Kiyoshi Tamura, Naoya Ogawa, Yuki Kondo, or perhaps Kazushi Sakuraba? Finally, one has to wonder if Rickson is bound to a contract with the last event he fought in, Colosseum.

Be patient, he'll come back!

More News on Japan's UFO

More word is trickling in regarding Antonio Inoki's UFO event.

Due to Antonio Inoki's background in pro wrestling, there is an underground buzz in Japan that the show may be a crossover show, similar to Mr. Inoki's New Years Eve BOM-BA-YE shows.

This may not be the case, as Mr. Inoki has shown great interest in fostering a team of true MMA fighters. The rumors of Ogawa versus 'Minotauro' Nogueira are just that - rumors. This match will probably not happen, as 'Minotauro' has some business ties to the Inoki camp.

Word is that Brazilian legend Marco Ruas is signed to fight on the August card, in what is reportedly a 'retirement' bout for the founder of RUAS Vale Tudo.

Monte Cox fighters Jens Pulver and Pat Miletich are also reported to be fighting, lending further credence to UFO being a Mixed Martial Arts show free of worked fights.

There is also strong word of more Brazilians to be added to the card - safe to say the elite Brazilian fighters will not even consider works, so look for further announcements as the card fills out.

The Rock Has Returned...Home
Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii
June 15, 2002

The WWE finally put on a show here in Hawaii and it was great. I grew up watching wrestling in its hay day, with Hulk Hogan, Sargent Slaughter, The Iron Sheik, The Road Warriors, The Von Erich brothers, etc. The NWA and WWF were the largest promotions and local Professional wrestling here in Hawaii was strong with High Chief Peter Maivia, Lars Anderson, Lord Tally Ho Bleers, Bruiser Brody, etc. We used to go to events here at the Blaisdell and were lucky enough to go to WWF events in Madison Square Garden and other big arenas on the east coast.

Last night's show not only brought back some great childhood memories, but I got to share them with a new generation of wrestling fan, my daughter. My wife and daughter are avid wrestling fans and this is the closest thing to MMA that we can watch together and enjoy as a family without me exercising my usurping rights on the all-powerful remote control. Some of you may know that we like wrestling so much that I named my Rottie, The Rock, even the Vet and Vet assistants call him "The Rock."

Most of you know Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's connection to Hawaii. His father is Pro-wrestler Rocky Johnson (hence The Rock moniker) and his mom is High Chief Peter Maivia's daughter. So The Rock was born into a Pro-wrestling family and he went to McKinley High School and on to Miami, Florida for college. The show was not as exciting as I remember it was when I went as a child, but I think it was because when we grow up, we lose some of the freedom of forgeting that it is fake and looking for screw ups or missed punches, instead of just letting everything go and enjoying it for what it is, pure entertainment. My daughter absolutely loved it and was screaming and cheering the whole night. The only disappointment was that she did not get The Rock's autograph.

So if anyone reads this that can hook me up with The Rock's autograph and make my daughter the happiest girl in the world, call me on my cell (381-5959). Alright, I wouldn't mind taking a picture with The Rock myself. There, I said it.

Pete Spratt Interview
(Mentions that his fight with Ron Jhun was his toughest)

UFC Pre-Fight Interview: PETE SPRATT

Pete Spratt makes his UFC debut on June 22nd, at the Bellagio in Las Vegas

ADCC: Pete, How are things? Pete: Things are great my man, I am training hard and just trying to relax and enjoy life!

ADCC: Tell us a little bit about yourself? Pete: Well, I am a student of Saekson Janjira 6 time World Champ and I am fighting out of Dallas. In my spare time, I manage and rap with my group the 903 Playas. We are currently recording out third album. Check out my site www.petespratt.vze.com and you can get a sample of my music. I was a collegiate football 1st Team All-American wide receiver and player of the year in 1995 at Southeastern Oklahoma State University and also a two-time national qualifier in the triple and long jump in college. I have a B.S. Degree in Occupational Safety and Health which is my most proud achievement.

ADCC: What is your fight record? Pete: 10-4.

ADCC: What has been your biggest fight up until the UFC? Pete: I would have to say my fight with Ronald Jhun. That fight really got the MMA world to notice Pete Spratt. We had a war and it was fun. He's a tough guy and it was a great experience for me.

ADCC: You have fought a few tough fighters, Steve Berger for one, how has that fight helped you prepare for this one? Pete: That fight with Steve hasn't helped anything! It only lasted 2:16 and then it was stopped due to a cut. Many people would say that I was in control of that fight up until the cut. I really can't say that anything good came out of that fight. It was a learning experience and that's that.

ADCC: How do think Steve will do against Robbie Lawler? Pete: I think Steve will do well against Robbie. I know that he has learned a lesson from his last fight with Benji and I think Steve will be well prepared for any big shots that come his way. My only concern would be that Robbie will be a little too strong for him. All in all, Steve is a veteran and has been around the sport a long time and his experience will carry him in this fight.

ADCC: This fight is not on PPV, but might be on FOX, is that a bigger incentive to fight well? Pete: No matter what the circumstance I always wanna fight well. I like to make exciting fights and that has become a reputation of mine. I come to finish or be finished. The potential of being on regular TV is great for us and great for the UFC, it gives us the opportunity to introduce our sport to an audience other than the avid MMA followers. This will be the 1st step for us to go mainstream and Zuffa is doing a great job in leading the way.

ADCC: What do you know about Zach? Pete: I know he was a great high school wrestler and that he trains with a great group of guys with Team Punishment.

ADCC: How does your fighting compare to his? Pete: There is no comparison. He's a wrestler and I am a striker!

ADCC: What do you hope to gain from this fight? Pete: To finally get the respect of the rest of the MMA world. I am just happy the opportunity is finally here and I plan on taking full advantage of it!

ADCC: Thanks for your time, and good luck. Pete: No, thank you for giving me the opportunity to express myself. I really appreciate it!

Sorry about the news yesterday

My laptop that has been getting trashed and breaking down for the last month came down with a virus that infected 2000 files and knocked out my page editor. This is a lesson! Make sure you keep your virus dat file updated and virus check once a week. If you don't have time, just virus check the *.exe and *.dll files at the very least. Yesterday, Chris was MIA.

Jens Pulver Mini Interview

Where has 'Little Evil' gone? Many rumors have popped up over the last few months about the future of the lightweight champ. Is he leaving the UFC? Will he fight in Pride? Will he fight Royler Gracie? Is he going to retire? I caught up with the champ and he answers the questions everyone wants to hear.

ADCC: Jens, can you tell us a little bit of what has been going on since your last fight?
Jens: Well I have been working on my fighting skills, I want to get better on the ground and even twice as good as I was on my feet. I am getting ready to fight on the 29th of June and then off to the UFO in Japan where I will try to prove my worth over there. I am happy, I am healthy and I am excited for the chance to fight in Japan.

ADCC: Do you still plan to stay with the UFC?
Jens: I love the UFC and what they have done for me in the past. I think the world of Dana, Lorenzo and Frank and want nothing more than to have good relations with them. I want to be a big part of the UFC and we will have to see what the future holds for both the UFC and me.

ADCC: Are you in negations with Pride?
Jens: I was never in negotiations with Pride. That is my managers job is to negotiate, he lets me know when something solid comes along. Otherwise I don't care. I don't like to get all excited about an opportunity and then have shoved back in your face and fall completely through, so I have heard about pride but until I am offered a solid deal, I will have to say I don't know.

ADCC: Have you been approached to fight Royler Gracie?
Jens: Yes, and I want that one very much but he has too many demands and forgets that he is not the best in the world, but I will give him the shot to try to beat the best if he wants too.

ADCC: Is there anyone else who you would like to fight?
Jens: BJ Penn, I want to fight him because it is a good fight for both of us and I don't want him to have to defend a paper belt in the UFC if he gets it, it should be because he beat the man that had it, because I will still be out there beating the best around and proving that I am still the best in this weight class. BJ almost had it close his last fight, except the part where he said that he was the best in the world. The truth is he had his 25 minutes and did not prove he was the best. I Did!

ADCC: Do you feel that the fans will be behind you if you leave the UFC?
Jens: I hope that the fans will be behind anyone that they like to watch fight. if there are some out there who enjoy seeing me fight well then I hope they continue to watch or at least read up about it on www.jenspulver.com I love the fans in this sport and have received many emails and letters about this whole thing and I can't believe the support, so I will have to just go out there and make sure they want to watch me fight.

ADCC: Take care and good luck!
Jens: Thank you and best wishes to those who read this.

"Stuttering" John vs. "Crazy Cabbie"

After a couple months of hype, trash talk and training, the "Stuttering" John vs. "Crazy Cabbie" boxing match finally came to blows on May 31st at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Since John had absolutely no previous pugilistic training, he approached FCF's illustrious Joel Gold seeking help. Joel got a hold of kickboxing champion Derek Panza and Steve Weinberger (owner of Bev Francis Gold's Gym) and the trio set about making a fighter out of the beer-guzzling radio personality.
A scant two and a half months later, John stepped into the ring at the Taj a changed man. Joel's bullying and badgering, Derek's boxing drills, Steve's conditioning routines, and hours of punishing sparring had paid off. John won a unanimous decision over his opponent -- who had an almost 100lb. weight advantage -- after 5 rounds. Constantly scoring with the overhand right to the grill, John impressed the judges, the fans and even his ever-critical boss Howard Stern. The event was broadcast live on Stern's morning drive time radio show and aired later that evening on his E! Channel syndicated television show.

MMA Middleweight contender Phil Baroni joined the team the day of the fight to lend a hand in John's corner. The "New York BadAss" turned out to be quite instrumental in inspiring John in between rounds.

Due in part to their success in training John, Derek & Joel have partnered up and will be opening a gym in Syosset New York in the coming months. The new facility will be geared towards private training. Many high-profile clients -- including rap stars and radio & TV personalities -- have already signed on.

The fight is scheduled to be rerun tonight on the Howard Stern show on the E! Channel at 11:00PM & 2AM EST (check your local listings).

Tyson - Lewis Sets PPV Records...

The combined effort of HBO and Showtime to promote the Tyson-Lewis fight has paid off more than expected.

Many news sources, including ESPN and the Associated Press, are reporting record revenues for the fight that was very lackluster and one sided.

Although Tyson was respectful and hinted that many of his antics were greatly exaggerated, he left the ring a VERY defeated man. He even hinted that he could 'fade away' and said that maybe he's turning soft because he enjoys spending time with his children more than anything.

It is safe to say that Lewis, who arguably be one of the greatest of all time, has little charisma and drawing power. While Tyson, the casual fan's only draw to pay for boxing, will remain the all-time box office king but is surely to suffer major career setbacks.

The match was so one-sided that it left no desire to see a rematch.

Regardless of the outcome, the pre-fight antics from the press conference brawl, the 'eat his children' comments and continuous 'negative'publicity around Tyson himself made this fight a monumental success. In reality, the storylines with Tyson vs. Lewis were real and as always with Mike, you wanted to see what he does next.

Estimates of a 1.8 buyrate shatters all existing PPV records as the highest grossing event in the history of boxing.

A 1.8 buyrate translates into an estimated $103,000,000 gross and there were rumors of it greatly exceeding expectations of both HBO and Showtime.

The previous record was $100,000,000 for the second helping of the Tyson vs. Holyfield fight.

Ken Shamrock's Return to Pro Wrestling?

Ken Shamrock's return to the WWE (formerly WWF) is not going to happen.

Shamrock was in negotiations and was reportedly asking for periodic time off to train for high-dollar fights in MMA, while maintaining a road schedule with WWE.

He was offered a position but declined it due to money offers on the table for potential fights in UFC and Pride.

One the other hand, WWE wasn't too keen on having their contract wrestlers doing legitimate fights, risking injury. This wouldn't gel with building Shamrock up and taking a chance on him having to bail out in the middle of a storyline.

Shamrock apparently will sign with the newly founded NWA-TNA group, a new group in the Pro Wrestling World. The future of this group is in question but it's a way for Shamrock to continue his training and still get a steady paycheck.

Shamrock's deal is apparently only two dates per month. Much better than the 12-20 dates per month with the WWE. This will keep Shamrock's name fresh in pro wrestling while giving free reign to get fights in MMA.

There is already talk of Shamrock vs. Tito Ortiz to headline a Vegas show in the fall and now a potential rematch with Dan Severn is in the works as well.

With the WWE deal not panning out and far less bookings on his calendar, one would think that this would increase the odds on the Ortiz fight.

Our inside sources have confirmed that multiple times World BJJ Champion and 3x ADCC World Submission Wrestling Champion Royler Gracie will take on veteran grappler Henry Matamoros in an ADCC rules match! This match is now confirmed! Promoters took their time announcing the match as they secured final details. The grappling match is to be a special feature match on a new NHB event scheduled in Atlantic City, NJ on July 19, 2002. Mark Coleman Update:
'I feel like I came out pretty lucky'

The Mixed Martial Arts world was given a scare this past week. According to Pride officials, 'Mark Coleman got an injury on his neck during his training on June 6th. On June 7th, DSE was informed from his management that he was hospitalized and got some medical examinations including MRI on his neck.' Furthermore, 'On June 11th (Japan time), DSE received an official letter from the doctor who examined Mark Coleman. The report says, 'Mark Coleman was admitted to a medical center with left arm weakness and numbness. This was because of nerve injury over a large osteophyte at the C6-7 level.'

I spoke with Mark today and his spirits were up. He said, 'I am as good as can be asked, I feel like I came out pretty Lucky.' He said that this freak accident happened when he was training with the 'Monster' Kevin Randleman, who was wearing only socks at the time. Kevin went for a takedown and slipped and the both came down poorly, jarring Coleman's neck. Mark has had trouble with his neck in the past, but felt he was well prepared for Frye. 'I should have been going full speed when I was only going three quarters on the move,' said Mark. He went on to say, 'I was on the floor motionless for what seemed like hours, when in reality it was only ten or fifteen minutes.' The EMS eventually arrived and he spent three days in the hospital. Mark is upset in that he feels like he let the fans, Pride and Frye down. Coleman believes that he is the best heavyweight out there and he wanted to prove it. He said 'I have made great strides on my submissions and I hope Frye gets past this opponent so we can fight.' When asked about the UFC, 'Dana has always told me the door is open.'

I want to wish Mark a full and complete recovery. For one, I want to see him take on Don Frye, which will be one of the best rematches in the history of MMA.

Egan Inoue to Retire?!?

For Immediate Release:
June 10, 2002

“I am committed to do what is best for my family.” Egan Inoue

Super Brawl Champion Egan Inoue has signed to fight Holland’s, Martijn de Jong (ranked #4 in the world by the Shooto Association) at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu on Saturday night, July 13. This may be the last chance Hawaii fans get to watch this 37-year old phenom battle in the Super Brawl ring.

Inoue sites a new career and his family as the reason for his recent unexpected announcement. It seems Inoue has accepted a job as a representative for a major pharmaceutical company. “I have mixed feelings about (my retirement). I feel like I am still improving as a fighter and have a few big fights left in me. But I am committed to my wife and children and need to look out for their long term well being. I need to give this new opportunity 100% of my attention for the foreseeable future.” Egan Inoue

Super Brawl promoter T.Jay Thompson supports Inoue’s new venture. “Egan has been a champion at everything he has done in his life. I am sure he will be successful in his new chosen career. It is an honorable choice for him to put his family first.” But his promoter cap is firmly affixed to his head. “This will be a tremendous loss for Super Brawl. Egan has been dominating the 185lb class and there was no end in sight. He is also responsible for the three largest live gates in Hawaii’s history. We would not rule out making (Inoue) an offer he cannot refuse somewhere down the line.”

Tickets for the Inoue v de Jong match go on sale Monday, June 17th, at the Blaisdell Center box office, all tickets plus outlets or online at www.ticketplushawaii.com. More match-ups to be announced in the coming weeks.

Ultimate Royce On This Weekend

A complilation of probably the most famous MMA fighter in the US and maybe in the world, Royce Gracie will be shown starting this weekend.

Name for Aiea Academy Deadline

Boy, out of site out of mind. We have not received anymore names suggestions. We have received 18 actual suggestions. So far we have not been sold on one of the names yet. We are going to set the deadline for submission of a name at the end of this week. You can submit all the way up until Sunday June 16th, Father's day.

Again, we are probably the most anal retentive guys you have ever met, so we are real picky. These are the guidelines that we are looking for:

- You may use a Hawaiian, Brazilian, Japanese or other name or word in the title, but it must be easy to pronounce (I would hate to continually correct people)

- We are not so vain to require that Onzuka is in the name, but we will accept it, if it is cool.

- We are looking for a name that is not geographically limiting. Basically we don't want Aiea in it, just in case we ever move locations.

- We don't want a name that would confuse us with another school, style or

- We are looking for a name that represents our school. We have a close camaraderie among students, train hard, are open-minded (no not that kind of open-mindedness), stress technical ability or power, have produced a lot of champions and are always looking to improve and help the sport and everyone in Hawaii.

- You may submit more than one name, as it may spark some creative juices or we may combine a couple suggestions together. Just throw your ideas out there because we have received some terrible ones.

The person whose suggestion we use will receive an FCF shirt and a UFC poster. If we don't choose any of your names, to reward everyone's effort we will write your names on a piece of paper and put it in my pants and have a beautiful woman pull out a name to receive the shirt & poster.

Get on it! I know someone out there has the perfect name for us!

Chute Box versus Brazilian Top Team Again

PRIDE 21: Brazilian Rivalry on Tap Again?

It is beginning to appear that DSE PRIDE will ink another chapter in the developing story of the new 'rivalry' between Brazilian Top Team and Chute Boxe!

Current SHOOTO Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva from Chute Boxe will face Paulao Filho, the BTT phenom who has been a highlight reel in Pancrase, with wins over Yuki Kondo and Ikuhisa Minowa.

Filho versus Silva is a followup to the classic Mario Sperry versus Murilo Ninja that took place at the last PRIDE. That match saw Ninja win a hard fought decision. Paulao and Anderson will be the 2nd match involving these 2 teams in the PRIDE events, and the 3rd meeting overall. Both teams are considered among the top professional teams in the world.

Coleman talks about his injury

Coleman Speaks on the Scare, Future in MMA
By Joe Hall

FCF: First off, are you OK?
MC: Yeah, I think everything is going to be fine here in the end. Pretty scary moment for me -- total paralysis for about ten minutes or so. I have almost all my feeling back now. I still have some numbness in my hands. There's still a lot of soreness, stiffness in the neck. As we do this interview right now, I'm still on painkillers.

FCF: What exactly happened?
MC: I've had a bad neck for quite some time. Actually, it had been going very well for me for a long time. It was sort of a freakish incident where me and my partner Kevin Randleman were going about three-quarters-go, and he had gotten me up in the air using a wrestling throw. His feet kind of slipped out from underneath him, and I pretty much absorbed his weight and mine right on the top of my head. [The fall] snapped my neck back, and I lost feeling in my body.

FCF: Obviously, that was a frightening moment. What thoughts were going through your head at that time?
MC: I was laying there mostly thinking about my two kids. Who was going to take care of my children? After a while, I even got a little bit selfish, and I was wondering who was going to take care of me.

FCF: I imagine someone called 911?
MC: Yeah, they had to call the paramedics in. The ambulance came in, and I got carted away on a stretcher -- that's the first time that's ever happened to me in my life. [It's] just not a good feeling being driven away to the hospital and the uncertainty of what exactly was wrong. They took initial x-rays, and they showed a couple fractures on the neck. That was a scary situation, but when I got the MRI, there were no fractures. I do have some bone spurs in the neck.

FCF: So, there wasn't much question that the fight against Don Frye would have to be cancelled?
MC: I would have to say it was over right from the get-go. I was just hoping to be able to get the feeling back, be able to walk, and be able to take care of my children.

FCF: How many days were you in the hospital?
MC: I spent three days in the hospital.

FCF: You mentioned the doctors told you that you had a few bone spurs. What else did they say? And how has your future in fighting been affected?
MC: I have some bone spurs. I have a little bulge in there. Surgery is an option, but I've already talked to some neurologists who have told me it's not necessary. I do plan on avoiding [surgery] and just really strengthening the area and being more careful. I feel like it was a freakish incident, something I can avoid in a real fight. I have to think about my kids and consider if I want to risk this. As we talk, my answer is definitely. This is what I do. I'm not going to deny it; there is a lot of fear involved. But as every day passes, I'm confident the fear will leave. I'm just going to work hard, and I still plan on coming back. I feel absolutely horrible to the Pride organization, the fans out there and Don Frye himself. He really deserved this rematch, and I was really looking forward to putting on a good show. I feel like I've let a lot of people down. But I've been down before, and I'm not the type of person that stays down.

FCF: How long do you estimate it will be before you can get back to training or even step back into the ring?
MC: I hope to be back as soon as possible. I'm letting things heal up here a little bit. It feels better daily. My range of motion is pretty well all the way back. I've been seeing a chiropractor who's assured me that I can live to fight another day. It's really up to me. At this point, I owe way too many people another fight. Especially the Pride organization, who have been so good to me. I really hope they'll give me the opportunity to fight again. If they don't, well, I don't blame them, but if they don't, I'll be back in the UFC. I have to fight again.

FCF: Is there anything else you'd like to say?
MC: If this was the stock market, I could see a lot of people selling off [my] stock, but I can promise those who hold onto the stock, the value is going to go way back up. I am going to rise back to the top, and I will be on the champion platform again. I guarantee that.

From the shores of these Islands are the gates where many of these Legends and their roots once trained, and have pass the keys to the next generationts to come. Through the decades, the gates in Hawaii are now once again open to welcome home these legends.
