Shamrock
and Shogun Today
5-Time
UFC Champion Frank Shamrock will be conducting a seminar today
at the Hawaii Convention Center from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. If
you have not signed up, I assume you can pay at the door. The
cost is $40 for the seminar. I would take advantage of training
with probably the best pound for pound in the world.
The
Shogun MMA event starts at 7:00 PM. Come early because of the
holiday shopping traffic. There should be adequate parking, but
who knows until at least one event is complete. The weigh-ins
were yesterday at the Ala Moana Hotel with a huge table showcasing
all the fighters lined up. I arrived late because of work so
I did not get a chance to witness the actual weigh-ins. There
was a great buffet after the weigh-ins which I sampled myself
just to be sure that it was ok for the fighters (heh heh).
Master
trainer, Javier Mendez (trainer of Frank Shamrock, BJ Penn, Crazy
Bob Cook, Dave Velasquez, Brian Johnston, etc.), came in and
we had a little talk about BJ's upcoming title fight with Jens
Pulver in the next UFC. He said BJ is ready for Jens both standing
and on the ground and he is not worried if the fight goes either
way. Javier told me that BJ is like a sponge with all the techniques
he is shown and quite an innovator as well.
Baret
looked ready for action, as did his teammates Abe, Cabbage, and
Dennis. This has the making of a new breed of MMA competitions
in Hawaii mainly due to the octagon. Will it catch on with the
other organizations? Only time will tell. The fighters must use
a different strategy when fighting in a cage, especially sprawling.
Watch the fighters to see who has made the modifications in their
training to account for the cage. |

Press Conference
by Michael Onzuka

coming soon!
(If there are any Windows 2000 pros out there that can get my
touchpad to work without my optical mouse, shoot me an email,
PLEASE!)
Today at the new Dave
and Buster's center in downtown Honolulu, the Shogun Press conference
was held. Along with the fighters, Enson Inoue was there to back
his fighters, as were Chuck Liddell, Crazy Bob Cook, and Lance
Gibson. The local ABC affiliate was present and local media.
Many fighters were already in and showed up at the roof top open
air venue.
Today was a very windy and rainy day, but we were spared of heavy
rains while the press conference was going on. Promoters Helen
Miller and Herb Tantan welcomed everyone to the event and started
off with Egan Inoue explaining the injury that caused him to
have to pull out of the fight. Inoue broke his middle finger
against Doerkson in the last Super Brawl. Egan commented that
Hallman probably wants him to say something nice about him, but
he just told the audience to look at his broken finger (flipping
the bird). Hallman was next and greeted Egan in the same fashion.
He was disappointed that he was not fighting Egan, but looked
forward to Bitetti saying that he does not run away from the
fight like "others" he has fought in the past. Hallman
looked bigger than Egan and said he is about 188 lbs right now.
Local favorite, Wesley "Cabbage" Correira was up next
and said that he is going to get revenge for the loss that his
opponent Aaron Brink gave to his teammate Dennis Tadio. Egan's
"little" brother Enson stated that he probably could
not top Cabbage's trash talk, but stated that his fighters are
excited about fighting outside of Japan and he thinks they are
ready.
In order to help the local community, Helen Miller announced
that they have teamed up with the Hawaii Food Bank and will be
accepting a donation of canned goods at the event .
American Kickboxing fighter, Josh Thompson told everyone about
his friend and sparring partner, UFC Veteran Brian Johnston who
broke a blood vessel in his neck that caused a stroke. Johnston
spent three months in the hospital and just came home about three
weeks ago and is still in a wheelchair. Unfortunately, Johnston
is not covered by the New Japan's medical insurance and has a
ton of medical bills. American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) raised
money to make t-shirts to sell in order for Johnston to raise
money for his medical bills. The shirts are $20 so make sure
that you pick up a shirt and help support this courageous fighter.
Finally, Herb Tantan completed the press conference by explaining
that the fights will be held in a cage and that cages are much
safer than rings. The fighters will not fall out of the cage
like they can in a regular ring. The fighters look confident
and ready to kick off this inaugural Shogun event at the Hawaii
Convention Center which is another first as far as Hawaii mixed
martial arts venues.
On a side note, headliner Dennis Hallman broke off of Matt Hume's
AMC school and is on his own. I asked him about it and you can
find out the background behind this breakup if you subscribe
to Full
Contact Fighter.
How's that for some suspense?!

Note for Shogun
According
to Haru Shimanishi of HMC and partner of Matt Humes of AMC where
Dennis Hallman trains, Hallman is now no longer training with
Humes at AMC as can be seen in the Victory Athletics team listing
below. Hallman was reportedly making his own deals without notifying
Matt who was his acting manager. Everyone will get to see on
Saturday if this has had a positive or negative effect on Hallman. |

Interesting
Story
Yeah, this has
nothing to do with martial arts, but I figured that this is an
interesting read.
Do you know anything
about the man who is due to try out his suit of armor invention
by fighting a bear? -Bert
Yes, he's a Canadian
man that has decided to provide evidence that his "bear-proof
suit" really works by taking on a 7 ft. 600 lbs. Grizzly!
Troy Hurtubise has taken 15 years and $150,000 to create his
indestructible armor and has already won an engineering Ig Nobel
prize as well as an entry in the 2002 Guinness Book of World
Records for the most expensive research suit ever made. The suit
is made from chainmail, rubber, plastic, galvanised steel, titanium
and tons of duct tape. The fight will take place in northern
Canada with a trained bear that will be told to attack for 10
seconds.

Rulon
gets gold! USA 3rd in Greco World
Gardner wins
gold and Lindland takes silver at Greco-Roman World Championships
in Patras, Greece, Dec. 9; USA places third as a team, its best
ever finish
2000 Olympic
champion Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids)
claimed a gold medal at 130 kg/286 lbs., the highlight of a historic
performance by the U.S. team at the Greco-Roman World Championships
in Patras, Greece, Dec. 9. The competition was held at Dimitrios
Tofalos Arena.
Also on Sunday,
2000 Olympic silver medalist Matt Lindland (Oregon City, Ore./Sunkist
Kids) won a silver medal at 85 kg/187.25 pounds.
The U.S. placed
third as a team in the final standings, the best-ever finish
for the United States at the Greco-Roman World Championships.
The U.S. claimed three individual medals, as Brandon Paulson
(Golden Valley, Minn./Minnesota Storm) also captured a silver
medal at 54 kg/119 lbs. on Saturday.
Gardner decisioned
Mihaly Deak-Bardos of Hungary 2-0 in overtime in the gold medal
match, scoring both of his points from the clinch position. Deak-Bardos
had beaten Gardner twice during international events earlier
in the year.
Gardner shocked
the world during the 2000 Olympic Games, with an upset win over
three-time Olympic Champion Alexander Kareline of Russia. This
year, Gardner proved that he remains the World's greatest super
heavyweight wrestler by defending the title.
"It does
feel like a great pressure has been lifted off my shoulders since
winning the Olympics," said Gardner. "Some people thought
I really didn't do anything to win the gold medal besides beat
Karelin. And they didn't think I'd be back again. There will
always be pressure like that. But I just kept working it all
one match at a time and it all worked out well."
Gardner became
the only U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler to ever win both an Olympic
gold medal and a World gold medal. He is just the third U.S.
Greco-Roman wrestler to capture a World title, joining Mike Houck
(90 kg in 1985) and Dennis Hall (57 kg in 1995).
Gardner won
three matches on Sunday to capture the title. He had an amazing
match in the quarterfinals against the "next Russian superstar"
Yuri Patrikeev. The crowd favored Patrikeev since Gardner is
the athlete who defeated Russian legend Alexandre Karelin in
the 2000 Olympic finals.
The second period
started with a clinch where Gardner had to clinch first. He broke
and Patrikeev was awarded the one point. Then at 4:10 Gardner
went for a throw and landed on his back and Patrikeev was awarded
two points. Gardner was down 0-3 and started attempting throws.
Nothing worked until 5:00 when he threw and pinned Patrikeev.
In the semifinals,
Gardner decisioned former World silver medalist Sergej Moreyko
of Bulgaria, 3-0.
In addition
to winning his Olympic gold, Gardner placed fifth in the 1997
World Championships. He competed collegiately for the Univ. of
Nebraska and Ricks College.
Lindland was
defeated in the gold-medal match by Mukhran Vakhrangadze of Georgia,
2-1 in overtime. Vakhrangadze scored two points in the regulation
periods, and Lindland scored one point in overtime but could
not close the gap.
"I am not
as satisfied as I would be if I won the gold medal," said
Lindland. "I touched it but the last minute it slipped out
of my hands. I dedicate the silver medal to my two children."
Lindland needed
two wins on Sunday to qualify for the finals. He had an easy
time defeating Evgeniy Erofaylov of Uzbekistan 11-0 in 1:58 in
the quarterfinals. Erofaylov was put down at one minute with
a passivity call and Lindland took it from there, turning Erofaylov
repeatedly to earn the technical fall.
Lindland then
won a 5-2 decision over Alexandre Menshikov of Russia in the
semifinals to make it to the gold-medal match.
Lindland won
an Olympic silver medal at 76 kg/167.5 pounds in 2000, and has
moved up in weight to 85 kg/187.25 and is competing at that weight
for the first time at a World Championships. Lindland is one
of the team veterans, placing sixth in the 1998 World Championships
and competing in the 1997 and 1999 World meets at the lower weight.
Lindland competed for the Univ. of Nebraska and Clackamas CC
in college.
Cuba won the
team title followed by Russia and the USA. By having three medalists,
the United States has also tied its record for the most medals
ever one in either the World or Olympic Championships.
"It feels
great," said U.S. World Team Coach Andy Seras. "I always
thought it was within reach, but it's really something that we
finally got there. The way our whole camp went we were really
a team from the beginning. Everybody has a piece of this. It
doesn't matter if you didn't make the top ten or win a medal."
Other U.S. placewinners
included Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC),
who was seventh at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Jim Gruenwald (Colorado
Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), who finished 10th at 58 kg/127.75
lbs.
The World Championships
of Wrestling were originally scheduled for Madison Square Garden
in New York City, Sept. 26-29, but were postponed then moved
due to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States. The
event was split in two and awarded to two new cities. The Freestyle
World Championships for men and women were held in Sofia, Bulgaria,
Nov. 22-25, with the Greco-Roman World Championships assigned
to Patras, Greece this week.

Shamrock and Guy Mezger among others. Although Otsuka's career
is far from brilliant, with a lot of losses in his record, he
has proven himself to be a tough opponent. This will be Vanderlei´s
fourth fight of the year, and his fourth Japanese opponent. FCF
was told that Silva is training very hard and is healed from
any injuries. Silva reportedly knocked out two people in training
at the Chute Boxe camp this past week.

Well
known on the mats as a Jiu- Jitsu competitor representing Alliance

Leite who was the Jiu- Jitsu world champion in 1999 and 2000
(he beat Mario Sperry for the title in 1999 I believe).
He recently became the Judo Panamerican champion in 2 weight
divisions (Heavy and Absolute ) in the last edition in Cordoba,
Argentina.
Brazil
got 6 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 6 bronze medals and got
the first place in the competition as well as more medals than

competition had more than 220 judo stylists from 19 countries.
During 2001 Leite skipped the Jiu-Jitsu competitions and is focusing
his career more towards Judo competitions looking forward the

Joao
Roque Comments on Bozo Palling
Nova
Uniao BJJ black belt, Joao Roque was recently successful in the
WFA in Las Vegas against Hawaii's Stephen "Bozo" Palling.
He was recently interviewed by Abu Dhabi and commented on the
fight with Palling. Enjoy!
FIGHTWORLD.com
Brazil: Did the invitation to fight in WFA surprise you?
Roque: Yeah, ten days prior to the event I was invited by Lewis.
FIGHTWORLD.com
Brazil: How is it to get ready for an event in such a short notice?
Roque: In fact, since I had been training for the Brazilian Championship
Of Jiu Jitsu, my physical condition was good, I just had to change
the focus of the technical part, training without the gi.
FIGHTWORLD.com
Brazil: With little time of training, you certainly were not
able to study Stephen "Bozo" Palling, did you go to
the fight without knowing about him?
Roque: I only watched his fight against "Pequeno" in
the last SHOOTO of 2000.
FIGHTWORLD.com
Brazil: Alexandre "Pequeno" Nogueira had said that
Palling is the Igor Vovchanchyn of the lightweights, were you
worried about that?
Roque: In fact when I saw his fight with "Pequeno",
I had the impression that I could trade blows with him, without
problems, I'd be comfortable fighting on my feet. But after arriving
in Las Vegas, I had more precise information about the quality
of my opponent's Boxing and I changed my mind about fighting
on my feet.
FIGHTWORLD.com
Brazil: That was your second victory by armlock over opponents
of the same characteristics - good in Boxing skills - do you
think that those two fights were similar?
Roque: Palling showed me the same characteristics as Takehiro
Murahama and it was very good for me due to my lack of time to
train. I was able to take advantage of part of my training for
the fight with the Murahama, since that was very recent.
FIGHTWORLD.com
Brazil: Once again you didnt need to use your stand up
game, do you like that, or would you like to test your game on
your feet?
Roque: I'm improving my ground for these new things that are
happening in NHB.
FIGHTWORLD.com
Brazil: Did you like the WFA rules?
Roque: The rules are the same from UFC, which are the official
rules of the commission of Nevada, which takes care of these
kind of events.
FIGHTWORLD.com
Brazil: You already fought twice in the United States and 4 times
in Japan, what did think about the John Lewis' event?
Roque: I took part in two UFCs - the first one supporting André
Pederneiras and another one fighting, without doubts WFA was
way better. However, the UFC nowadays has a new look and organization;
and I think the UFC has been improving a lot.
FIGHTWORLD.com
Brazil: Do you know when the next WFA will be?
Roque: That info isn't confirmed, but I think it will be in February.
FIGHTWORLD.com
Brazil: Will you be there?
Roque: There's a good chance of me fighting in the next one.
FIGHTWORLD.com
Brazil: Did you pay attention to Vítor "Shaolin"
Ribeiros NHB debut, what did you think?
Roque: "Shaolin" was perfect, I believe that hes
going to have in NHB the same success that he obtained in Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu.
FIGHTWORLD.com
Brazil: Didn you get contacted to fight in DEEP2001 "3rd
Impact"?
Roque: I was invited to offer a rematch to Murahama and we're
only discussing some details of the negotiation, it can happen
next year.
FIGHTWORLD.com
Brazil: You had spoken - maybe Hallman would beat Pulver in UFC
33 - did you see that match-up ?
Roque: Well man, I was thinking Hallman would get to develop
a ground game better than he showed. I think Pulver got to do
the right things and Hallman lost his gas halfway into the fight,
I really hoped to see more effective skills by Hallman.
FIGHTWORLD.com
Brazil: The next fight for UFC lightweight will be BJ Penn vs.
Pulver, are you with Penn?
Roque: Im 100% sure that B.J. will be the next UFC champion
and I also believe that in that weight he and "Shaolin"
will be the best fighters in the world for this kind of event.
FIGHTWORLD.com
Brazil: Ok Mr. Roque, it was a pleasure again.
Roque: The pleasure was mine and thanx a lot for the opportunity.

UH
Kicked BYU's Ass!
We got up
early, real early to support the University of Hawaii Warriors
face 9th ranked and one of the only two undefeated college teams
in the country, BYU. For you mainland guys, BYU is the mortal
enemy of UH football and have had many epic battles. The game
was nationally televised on ESPN (we were in the nose bleeds
so we didn't make the TV coverage). UH won 72-45 which was the
most points scored against BYU ever. Congratulations to the Warriors
and their great season (9-3) with head coach June Jones!
A
replay of the game is playing now on Oceanic Channel 16.

Malcolm
"The Avalanche" Ahlo Enters Weight Lifting Competition
We have not
hear the results and will post it once we get it.
PARTIAL UPDATE
(12/8/01 11PM):
Neal "Pimp Daddy T" and I went to support Malcolm at
the State Powerlifting Championships. Unfortunately, we were
only able to stay for the first of three categories (squat, bench
& dead lift), which was the squat. Malcolm easily put up
757lbs or so (I can't remember exactly), but unfortunately could
not get into the rhythm that he needed to successfully put up
805lbs.
His brother Shane said that this could have been attributed to
a number of factors:
1.) Malcolm was eating a cheeseburger walking into the weigh-ins.
2.) Before a dinner the night before, he ate a cheeseburger,
2 sushi rolls and then ate at Buffet 100 (All you can eat Chinese
food).
3.) That second bowl of ice cream at Buffet 100.
4.) The Super sized Eggnog shake from McDonald's on the way home.
or my personal favorite,
5.) His girlfriend drained his mana the night before.
Either way, it was an impressive performance and we will get
how he did on the other lifts soon.

Greco
Roman Wrestling World Championships
3 US Wrestlers Advance!
Three U.S. wrestlers
advance at World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships in Patras,
Greece, Dec. 6.
Three U.S. wrestlers
won their pool competition and advanced during the first day
of competition at the World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships
in Sofia, Bulgaria, Thursday, December 6. The competition is
being held at Dimitrios Tofalos Arena.
Winning their
pool competitions were 1996 Olympic silver medalist Brandon Paulson
(Golden Valley, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 54 kg/119 lbs., 2000
Olympian Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC)
at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Keith Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S.
Army), competing at 76 kg/167.5 pounds. Bracken and Sieracki
did not allow a point scored on them during the first day of
action.
"Yeah,
I think we're doing really well," said Steve Fraser, National
Coach. "We haven't really had any really tough matches yet.
I'm really happy with Bracken's performance because he wrestled
a tough guy from Greece. Kevin and Keith are both wrestling really
well, they haven't had any points scored against them. Tomorrow
is going to be a tough day, especially with the addition of the
other four guys, who have some tough matches right away."
Paulson won
his first match, beating Vitalie Ceban of Moldova, 6-1. Paulson
started ahead 1-0 with a gut wrench, then Ceban was awarded a
point to tie it off a slip throw. Paulson then proceeded to get
three takedowns in the second period to close out the match.
Paulson advanced
from his pool with a dominant 11-2 decision over Dariusz Jablonski
of Poland in the second match. Paulson has earned the right face
Rakymzhan Assembekov of Kazakstan in the quarterfinals.
Paulson competed
for the Univ. of Minnesota. This is his first World Championships,
in addition to competing for the USA in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Bracken won
his first match by a technical fall over Chieh Yen Shih of Chinese
Taipai, 11-0 in 1:56 He scored first with a three-point headlock
as he was going out of bounds 50 seconds into the match. He then
took total control of the match, scoring another takedown, and
getting back exposure points.
In his second
bout, Bracken scored a 6-0 decision over Christos Gikas of Greece.
He now moves on to face Akaki Chachua of Georgia in the next
round.
Bracken competed
for Illinois State Univ. He placed sixth at the 2000 Olympic
Games, and also participated in the 1998 World Championships
Sieracki barely
broke a sweat in his first match with a 13-0 technical fall win
over Mal Suraj of India. He got on a roll with as series of throws,
ending the match in just 1:19.
Sieracki claimed
the pool with a 4-0 decision over Andrea Minguzzi of Italy. Sieracki
will face Tamas Berzicza of Hungary tomorrow morning.
Sieracki is
competing in his first World Championships, and has been a star
for the U.S. Army team for many years.
Jason Loukides
(Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), dropped the first match
among U.S. wrestlers, with a loss in the first round at 97 kg/213.75
lbs. He lost a 6-0 decision to veteran Petru Sudureak of Romania.
Loukides also lost his second bout, a 10-0 technical fall to
Urs Burgler of Switzerland.
Loukides is
participating in his first World Championships, and was a replacement
for 2000 Olympic bronze medalist Garrett Lowney, who chose not
to participate because of his college wrestling season at the
Univ. of Minnesota. Loukides competed for Edinboro Univ.
The World Championships
of Wrestling were originally scheduled for Madison Square Garden
in New York City, Sept. 26-29, but were postponed then moved
due to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States. The
event was split in two and awarded to two new cities. The Freestyle
World Championships for men and women were held in Sofia, Bulgaria,
Nov. 22-25, with the Greco-Roman World Championships assigned
to Patras, Greece this week.

pairing draw, and all will have talented opponents. Included
in the group are 2000 Olympic Champion Rulon Gardner (Colorado
Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 130 kg/286 lbs. and 2000 Olympic
silver medalist Matt Lindland (Oregon City, Ore./Sunkist Kids)

Shogun
FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE - December, 5th 2001
Filho Fractures a bone under the Eye in training, Bitetti ready
to go.
Honolulu,
HI - The day after Paulo Filho agrees to take on Dennis Hallman
in an octagon at Shogun, he sustained a fracture to the eye socket
that will keep him from fighting.
In
his place fellow countryman and UFC veteran, Amaury Bitetti,
will be taking his place. Amaury has been interested in fighting
at Shogun since the event was announced and was a natural choice
to take Filho's place. Promoter, Helen Miller, had Amaury's contract
in hand within hours after receiving word of the unfortunate
training accident, in Brazil, that will sideline Filho.
"It
was always our intention to bring top notch Hawaiian fighters,
Mainland fighters, Japanese fighters, and Brazilian fighters
under one roof for a great night of fights in Hawaii." Says
Miller, "After Egan's injury, we went straight to the top
for the fight fans. Its unfortunate that Top Team won't be able
to represent, but injuries are a part of the game you have no
control over and the health of these athletes is #1. Amaury is
a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt that always puts on a fantastic
show. He is a truly exciting fighter to watch because he is not
afraid to go toe-to-toe. He's proven that."
Amaury
is quoted as saying, ""I'd rather die than tap out!""
Some of Amaury's titles are:
Jiu-Jitsu:
Two times world champion in the absolute class 96-97 Black Belt

Bobby Hoffman News
THE
FUTURE OF THE KOTC HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
King of the Cage
A sport is as strong as its champions and, like many, I was saddened
and disappointed to hear the recent troubles of our King of the
Cage World Heavyweight Champion, Bobby Hoffman.
Given
the circumstances and for reasons of practicality, the King of
the Cage organization has made a decision to vacate the Heavyweight
Title. Throughout his fighting career, Bobby has been a scrapper,
always finding a way to win. His record and his abilities in
the cage can never be questioned, but our organization cannot
stand behind his recent actions.
Our
sport is in a transitional period now, on the cusp of breaking
through into the mainstream. While major leagues like the NFL,
NBA, and MLB can absorb its miscreant athletes, our sport cannot.
Mixed Martial Arts is continuing to fight for legitimacy and
we must prove that our sport differentiates itself with professionalism,
integrity, and sportsmanship.
On
February 9, 2002 at "King of the Cage 12" the vacant
KOTC World Heavyweight Belt will be up for grabs. Number One
contender Eric Pele will finally be given his opportunity at
the championship. Were looking forward to a great match
and a great show and we hope to see you there.

News
FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE - December, 3rd 2001
Egan
Inoue and Philip Perez are out Paulo Filho and Josh Thompson
are in.
Honolulu,
HI - With fighter safety and health the single most important
issue to the organizations that will be hosting "SHOGUN",
Egan Inoue and Philip Perez will be replaced for the December
15th show at the Convention Center in Honolulu, HI. In their
place will be Paulo Filho of the world famous "Brazilian
Top Team" and Josh Thompson from American Kickboxing Academy.
Egan
Inoue suffered an avulsion fracture of a bone on one of his hands.
According to Dr. Brian Izuka, orthopedic surgeon, if stressed
more, it will require surgery and no activity for 4 months. Inoue
states, "I'm sorry to the people that have supported me
and were looking forward to this fight. I will still be at Shogun
on December 15th to support my fighters, 'Cabbage', Abe Rodriguez,
Dennis Tadio, Baret Yoshida, Tory Windword, and I'll be there
to support the event. I'm still the spokesman for Shogun."
Philip Perez was the victim of a freak training accident, getting
knocked unconscious. If a fighter suffers any type of brain trauma
where he is rendered unconscious, training, fighting, or otherwise,
it is the opinion of Perez's trainers, Shogun staff, and some
athletic commissions that the fighter discontinue activities
that might cause further damage for a minimum of 30 days.
Paulo
Filho is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt powerhouse with wins
over Yuki Kondo and Ikuhisa Minowa and he is ranked #7 in the
world according the Mixed Martial Arts Media Top 10 balloting
process. He is eager to show the American public his MMA prowess.
He will be facing Dennis Hallman.
Josh
Thompson is a former All-American wrestler with North Idaho College
and Stanford, and a MMA veteran. He also was one of the original-founding
members of Team Idaho. Josh is currently Philip Perez's and BJ
Penn's sparring partner, making him a natural choice as a replacement.
He will be facing Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto.
Tickets
are on sale now through Ticket Plus, which has 55 outlets in
Hawaii. Tickets will also be on sale through JKD Training Systems,
Dave & Busters, and Grappling Unlimited. Tickets will be sold at the Honolulu
Convention Center on the day of the event, December 15th, after
4:30 pm. Prices range from $35.00 general admission to $55.00 ring side.
This
is by no means a let down for Hawaii fans. Paulo Filho has been
a major shaker in the Pancrase organization and very technical
fighter. I do not know much about Thompson other than what was
stated above. If any other information comes by my way, it will
be posted.

News
According
to the Sherdog website, Egan Inoue has pulled out of the Shogun
event on December 15th at the Hawaii Convention Center due to
a badly broken middle finger which will be only 50% usable. We
are considering this a RUMOR until we confirm this with Egan
himself. I will update this news as soon as I get confirmation
either way. |

Quest 3: Punishment In Paradise
Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii
December 1, 2001
The Warriors
Quest crew tries to improve upon every event, not only with the
fights, but with the fight spectacle. This time they had three
giant video screens set up, laser light shows and shooting mists
for the fighter entrances. The Warriors Quest Champions, Jhun
and Cooper also had a very cool intro video. The judges would
have an easy night as only one fight went to the regulated time
limit. However elite referee and always cordial, Larry Landless
had his work cut out for him, good thing he was flown in for
the event. The preliminary bouts were all submissions and the
main events all technical knock outs, both sets of results separated
by a majority decision. It looked almost too organized for such
an unpredictable sport. The Hawaii team, which consisted of mostly
Jesus Is Lord team (or former JIL members) edged out the mainland
team, which consisted of mostly Eugene Jackson's Gladiators Academy
members 5-4. This is probably directly attributable to fair match-making.
Brennan Kamaka always states that he likes to make matches that
both fighters have equal opportunities to win. The earlier fights
seem to fly by, but the normally blood thirsty crowd loved the
David Yeung-Bao Quach fight that went to a decision. The main
events held some surprises. Local star Niko Vitale seemed to
be dominating Sean Gray until Gray got to his knees picked up
Vitale on his back and jumped backwards. This must have knocked
the wind out of Vitale and Gray took advantage of it. Ron Jhun,
who recently came off of a very questionable referee stoppage
at the WFA, proved again that he is a top gun, a machine gun
that is (sorry, I just had to do that) in the 185lbs division.
Why isn't the UFC calling? Jhun would make an incredible addition
to that UFC's thinly populated 185lbs division. And finally,
Jeremy Bennett had an interesting strategy against Bradda Cooper,
which he did not exactly get to fully utilize. After being very
successful defending Cooper's punches earlier, Cooper slipped
one in and staggered Bennett to the canvas. One of Bennett's
corner men, UFC vet, Eugene Jackson, thought that Bennett was
knocked out and quickly reacted by throwing in the towel, calling
an end to the bout. Bennett obviously did not see the towel and
was surprised when referee Landless stopped the bout. Bennett
was disappointed with the result but was very respectful and
accepted the decision like a true competitor.

Bobby
Hoffman Jailed
Bobby Hoffman - Bad News
Hits KOC Heavyweight Champion Sources on the west coast are reporting
that veteran Bobby Hoffman has been sentenced to 2 years in jail
after a plea bargain. Allegedly, Hoffman was facing theft, assault
and weapons charges that were felony offenses - bail was originally
set at $1,000,000. Hoffman, who is reported to have done time
before, took the plea on Friday November 30th. It is also reported
that the troubled Hoffman also failed his UFC drug test a second
time, this following the Josh Barnett fight. After his highly
publicized failure in a UFC earlier in the year, the second failure
comes as a surprise to some. Finally, a source close to the scene
reports that Terry Trebilcock of KING of the CAGE is considering
stripping Hoffman of the KOC Heavyweight Title - look for a press
release from KOC in the near future...
