The
Deed Has Been Done.
Well,
everything went as planned and it is now official. They are now
Michael & Lisa Onzuka. The wedding was held at the church
downtown, I don't know the name of it, but it was a very nice
church. All the groomsmen were there and sobre, so that was one
of the big worries that was taken care of. Luke and Eric flew
out today back to NY and Chicago respectively. We are sorry to
see them go so soon. The reception also went well and everyone
seemed to enjoy themselves. Mike & Lisa will be out of their
honeymoon for the next week or so, so I will do my best to update
the page as often as possible. |

Another
great marriage quote (probably written by a married man)
"Bigamy

D-Day
is today
Finally
the day has come for Mike to feel the pain that every married
man has felt and is feeling. After today, my fellow
married men, we can honestly tell Mike what it is like to be
married. MUUUHAAHAAAHAAA!
I am currently getting, what we married men like to call, "marriage
pillow talk" from my wife, seeing as it is 1:45PM and we
should be leaving soon for the wedding. She is "gently"
reminding me that I have not taken a shower OR got my clothes
ready yet and why has my daughter not showed yet either for the
3PM wedding. Got to love it baby!
PS. Mike said to send out an occasional "What's up!"
to all the guys at Aiea because he won't be seeing them anymore.
Just a joke....or is it?........ |
UFC
33: Victory in Vegas Results
I
would have loved to see the first 3 matches, the number of results
that ended in decisions kind of slowed the crowd (at my house
at least), but that is what is going to happen when the level
is high and the fighters are evenly matched. Either a quick fight
because of a mistake or a long war. It was nice having some of
the guys over to my house to watch the fights. Maybe I'll make
that a tradition, unless I run out of vacation time at work.
Doh!
Din Thomas def. Fabiano Iha
Via unanimous decision
(Untelevised)
Ricardo
Almeida def. Eugene Jackson
Via submission (triangle choke) 4:06 1st Rd.
(Untelevised)
Jutaro
Nakao def. Tony DeSouza
Via TKO :15 of the 2nd Rd.
(Untelevised)
Gil
Castillo def. Dave Menne
Via unanimous decision
This was a war, Castillo is definitely a tough guy and deserved
to be in there, but Menne is just too good and proved that he
deserved to be the champ of this weight class for a long time.
Matt
Serra def. Yves Edwards
Via majority decision
Serra had great BJJ style take downs, if the initial takedown
failed he would pull to guard. Serra had a number of opportunities
to finish Edwards, even from the back twice, but couldn't. Serra
definitely won it, but I was surprised that he could not finish
Edwards.
Chuck
Liddell def. Murillo Bustamante
Via unanimous decision
This is the reason that "Bustamache" is my favorite
BJJ fighters. He has perfect timing, good positioning skills
and even clocked Liddell a few times. I thought that Murillo
got robbed because Liddell landed maybe 2 solid shots, but he
did not put any power into those. Every time he did, Murillo
slipped them and took him down. Murillo did have a hard time
keeping Liddell on the ground, but I believe the slipping, clinching
and take downs (Murillo's game) was far superior to Liddell's
strikes and defenses to take down. I believe Murillo should have
won, but then again, I am a BJJ guy (and the judges were boxing
guys, I believe), so what do I know.
Jens
Pulver def. Dennis Hallman
Via unanimous decision
Very disappointing performance for Pulver, not too bad for
Hallman. It was obvious that Pulver was afraid when on the ground
and for good reason, Hallman locked in an arm bar quickly and
Pulver had to bounce his arm to get out. Hallman effectively
caused Pulver to not be able to do what he does best, bang, defend
the shot, and bang some more. Even Pulver was disappointed in
his performance.
Tito
Ortiz def. Vladimir Matyushenko
Via unanimous decision
Ortiz is still the man, much more well rounded, but Matyushenko
is a tough guy with heavy hands. It looked like Ortiz did not
want to trade with Matyushenko and had to resort to covering
up with Vladdy started throwing some bombs. Ortiz even out wrestled
Vladdy and put him on his back. Ortiz showed that he can go 25
minutes no problem, while maintaining his intensity. Pretty impressive,
but he should have been able to submit Vladdy. I think he was
worried about losing position. Ortiz started his gravedigger
routine, but said no, he definitely did not bury Vladdy and gave
him kudos.

Sorry
for the missed day of news
As
you all must know by now, I'm getting married this Saturday and
took off of work yesterday and today. I was running around like
a mad man yesterday and plan to do the same today and tomorrow.
Thank God that my wonderful wife to be is spear heading the coordination
of everything or we would be in some serious trouble. I'm pretty
much in charge of the finances and budget. Lisa loves to shop
so sure she's putting mostly everything together, but to hold
her back from spending unnecessary money is quite a task indeed.
Add
to that, a last minute sparring session that I figure that I
would slip in to keep myself trim before I get married and let
it go and get fat again, turned out to be a bad idea. I was sparring
with our resident big man, Malcolm "Lollipop" Ahlo,
getting him ready for the International and Relson US Nationals
and he rolled over on my ankle and a big pop was heard. My ankle
is swelled and I am in pain when I walk, but all I have to do
is walk down the aisle and do a slow dance so I should be alright,
right? |

NAGA
Results Finally
September
22nd, Honolulu, Hawaii - An impressive 112 submission fighters
made the journey to the Wallace Rider Farrington Gymnasium to
compete in the NAGA's 2nd Annual Hawaiian Grappling Championship.
The event featured 35 Gi & No-Gi Grappling Divisions, which
drew fighters from neighboring islands and as far as Columbus,
Ohio on the mainland. The event was sponsored by Proving Grounds
Fightwear who gave all TeamChampions free T-shirts (www.provinggroundz.com),
Gold's Gym, Pipeline Cafe & Designer Body. Attached are some
of the highlights and results:
General
Comments:
It was great to see so many of the top teams from Hawaii come
out and compete at the NAGA event. I got a fantastic group photo
with Hawaii's top instructors including Egan Inoue, Relson Gracie,
Haru Shimanishi, the Kamakas, Joao Moraes, Marcello Tiger, and
Renato "Charuto" Verrissimo. They all seemed to enjoy
themselves and cheered on their respective teams. Also in attendance
was JKD Instructor - Burton Richardson.
4-Man
Invitational:
Eric Goo, the Hawaiian NAGA coordinator, put together some of
the top under-185 lb. fighters from some of Hawaii's best teams
for a fantastic 4-man tournament. The line-up included last years
Team Champion, Joao Moraes; Team Jesus is Lord's NHB Champion,
Ron "Machine Gun" Jhun; Team Relson Gracie's Steve
Hordinski; and last minute replacement, Brennan Kamaka, of the
Hawaiian Association of Mixed Martial Arts (Team HAMMA).
A
random draw pitted Brennan Kamaka against Steven Hordinski in
the first fight. Hordinski won at 2:20 of the fight with a heel-hook
submission. Joao Moraes and Ron Jhun then squared off in a tense
strategic match that went the distance. Despite a last minute
guard pass by Jhun, Moraes won in a close judges decision based
on his multiple submission attempts throughout the eight minute
fight.
The
final match between Hordinski and Moraes was an exciting bout
with aggressive grappling displayed by both fighters. Hordinski
was able to secure a victory when he sank a triangle choke on
Moraes at 3:08 of the fight and forced him to tap out.
Team
Champions:
In response to many requests from competitors and instructors
like Relson Gracie, the NAGA changed the rules in its Gi divisions
to traditional BJJ rules. Relson showed his support of this change
by showing up in full force and coached his students to the Team
Title of the Gi Divisions.
After
Barret Yoshidas spectacular performance in last years
event, Team Grappling Unlimited led a relentless uprising against
Team Jesus is Lord for the coveted No-Gi title. And conquer they
did. After winning many divisions throughout the day, the final
tally put Team Grappling Unlimited ahead for the No-Gi championship.
Final
Notes:
Nancy Chun who fought a valiant match in the womans division
brought 17 spectators! This was only one of the few examples
of the tremendous support exhibited from the family and friends
of those competing. The NAGA was very excited to see the number
of competitors double from last year and is looking forward to
the NAGA Hawaiian Championship III next September in Honolulu
where we will be bringing out some of our own main land fighters
to compete against Hawaiis best.

CANCELED!
It
was scheduled to be held tonight, but it was confirmed with T.
Jay that the welder that was "fixing" the ring screwed
up and made the ring too high. The ring does not allow any head
room at all. Promoter T. Jay Thompson kept his sense of humor
by responding, "It would be alright if they fought on
their knees."
No word has been given if this event will be rescheduled. Hopefully
everyone will check our page BEFORE they go down to Gussie's.
We will keep you informed of updated news.

The Other Side:
First
off, for the women that are reading this page wondering what
the hell went on the other night, we...um...drank beer and re-lived
our youths...yeah, yeah, that's it. That's the ticket.
For
those of you that were there, our resident big man, Malcolm Ahlo
has officially dropped the nickname "The Avalanche"
in place of "The Lollipop Man." I don't think I will
ever look at the following items the same again: Tootsie Roll
Lollipops & Corona beer
I still have an image of "The Lollipop Man" asking
"who like cum?" while dancing. For those of you who
saw this, God help us. For those of you that didn't, you will
never, ever be able conjure up the mental picture that was burned
into our psyche that night.
Wasn't it interesting that Mike "The 2-drink Maximum"
Onzuka was still standing after about 20 shots? Well, wasn't
it also interesting that someone was nice enough to prepare what
looked like Kalua Pig in the bathroom too? Les informed me later
that it was chicken.
Can anyone remember why my lighter is out of fluid and my belt
is all worn out? I can't seem to remember that part. Oh yeah,
I almost totally lost my voice.
A couple of you that took pictures, please send us copies of
them. Upon review and approval we will post them up here.
Lastly, who was the one who dropped a little thing right outside
my house and the other guy who lost it on the sidewalk just up
from the front of my house? That was definitely not Kalua Pig,
possibly a touch of Pucker though.
Oh yeah, I believe Neal "Lucky Charms" Tomimatsu is
up next. Boy, will we have something planned for him.....

Pride

Pride
16 Results
By Aaron Crecy
Fight
One
Gary Goodridge def. Yoshiaki Yatsu by submission (corner throws
in towel), 3:05 of R1
This fight was a mismatch from the outset as Goodridge, who bludgeoned
Yatsu in Pride 11, exhibited admirable restraint en route to
a lopsided victory. In just over three minutes, the Pride gatekeeper
succeeded in landing a steady stream of knees, uppercuts, jabs
and hooks. Though Yatsu seemed to have a little gas left in the
tank, he called for the towel after Goodridge secured a guillotine
choke.
Fight
Two
Assuerio Silva def. Norihisa Yamamoto by TKO, :11 of R1
Chute Boxe's heavyweight prodigy thoroughly demolished Yamamoto
in just eleven seconds, opening with two huge overhand rights
and a high kick that barely missed. However, Silva felled Yamamoto
with an ensuing right hand and then landed another huge right
while standing above his opponent. The fight was stopped as the
Brazilian delivered a flurry of punches upon the head of his
down foe.
Fight
Three
Murilo "Ninja" Rua def. Daijiro Matsui by KO (kicks
to face), :51 of R3
Making his Pride debut, Rua proved true to his Chute Boxe lineage
by displaying an impressive combination of ground work and standup
skills. While the first round for the most part featured a series
of takedowns and reversals, Ninja ended the period with a collection
of kicks and foot stomps that bloodied the downed Matsui.
The
second round brought more of the same as the Brazilian began
to take control the standup action while mixing in several knees
to the head from the side mount. At this point, it seemed to
be only a matter of time before the defenseless Matsui would
succumb.
Ninja
opened the third round with combinations and knees, quickly taking
a retreating Matsui to the ground with a bodylock. The fight
ended there as the Brazilian scored the KO with a left kick to
the face followed by two devastating foot stomps.
Fight
Four
Ricardo Arona def. Guy Mezger by judges' decision, 2 - 1
After an uneventful first round that ended with neither fighter
gaining a clear advantage, Mezger took control of the fight in
the second period behind the strength of several heavy body shots
and a huge high kick that stunned his young opponent. However,
Arona gutted his way through the round and avoided the KO. In
the third round, Arona took his winded opponent to the mat almost
immediately and proceeded to score with punches to the head and
ribs from inside Mezger's guard. Though he did not damage Mezger,
Arona apparently did enough in the final round to earn a 2-1
judges' decision.
Fight
Five
Semmy Schilt def. Akira Shoji by KO (knees and punches), 8:19
of R1
One-sided from the opening bell, this fight was custom-made for
a Japanese audience that loves to root for the underdog. However,
the diminutive Shoji was sorely overmatched and fell victim to
an accumulation of stiff jabs and even stiffer knees to the face.
The bout was compassionately halted late in the first round after
Schilt repeatedly knocked down his adversary with unblocked and
unreturned blows.
Fight
Six
Don Frye def. Gilbert Yvel by DQ (three yellow cards for holding
the ropes), 7:22 of R1
Though clearly reeling from an abundance of flying knees, Frye
prevailed after Yvel was issued a third yellow card in the first
round for holding the ropes. The Dutch fighter exploited Frye's
poor defenses-the result of both advancing age and a years-long
layoff-but fell victim to his own inner demons, losing his cool
after Frye retaliated to an accidental eye gouge with a seemingly
deliberate head butt. The bout ended shortly thereafter, and
it was only when Frye suggested a rematch that a post-fight melee
was prevented between the fighter and their camps.
Fight
Seven
Rodrigo Nogueira def. Mark Coleman by submission (tapped out
to triangle arm bar), 6:10 of R1
Coleman seemed to lack focus throughout as Nogueira exhibited
improved standup skills and an impressive arsenal of submissions.
Surprisingly, the placid Brazilian controlled the fight with
a mixture of punches and low kicks. Though Coleman eventually
scored a takedown when Nogueira slipped while attempting a high
kick, he was unable to pass the guard. After missing with both
a kimura and a triangle, Nogueira again secured a triangle before
switching to an arm bar triangle that forced the world's top
ranked heavyweight fighter to tap.

Ok,
to start off with a quote from one of my favorite movies Scarface,
"I'm still standing you mother f**ckers, I'm still standing."
Heh heh. Sorry, I didn't update the page sooner. I had a meeting
and doctor's appointment and just came back.
First,
I would like to thank all of about the 40 guys who showed up
and shared this special night with me. I hope everyone had a
great time and didn't go broke. I tried my best to minimize the
cost for everyone and just to let some of the complainers (e.g.
initials S.A.) know that I was probably one or was close to the
one who dropped the most cash to make sure that we all had a
great, safe time. The only thing was that I wished there was
more crowd interaction from the girls. All the guys that were
there were my closest friends from Jiu-Jitsu and all of you know
how much I love Jiu-Jitsu and the many friends that I have met
from this art.
As
for the drinking, I was wasted sure, but not wasted enough to
NOT remember all of you that were feeding me that crappy Tequilla
and whiskey shots. Just because the liquor holders were different,
it was still liquor. You all will pay dearly for that! Thank
God I was "training hard" for this night, but only
with beer, not hards. Thanks for the compliments of my drinking
in my emails, but I still am going to get dogged as being a light
weight, white belt in drinking.
I
have to say that I held up the little known motto that Chris
Moon and I have, "It's not how much you can handle, it's
how much you can drink!"
My
only goal was to stay conscious the whole night, which I was
successful. I went to the chiropractors this afternoon and my
damn ankle was killing me on the Dr.'s table from those shackles
and that heavy bowling ball. I think the majority of the injury
when Chris Moon helped me carry it, but he is so tall that it
was actually tripping me every time I took a step. heh heh
P.S.
I also peeled the wax off the welts on my ass for those who were
going to inquire about that!
I
hope everyone made it home ok and had a great time.
Lastly,
WHO'S NEXT?! |
NAGA
a Success
The
NAGA tournament was a huge success with many competitors from
many different schools entering. Each school made a great showing.
Grappling Unlimited took first place in the no-gi division with
the Relson Gracie Team taking second in the no-gi and ran away
with the gi title winning very handily. GU trains mostly if not
all no gi so it was real no surprise that they won. Some standouts
were Falaniko Vitale showing that he can handle the big boys,
John Crisostomo had a great battle with our Andrew Furuta, Shane
Agena took first in the advanced no-gi and along with Longman's
Ryan Eniem took first and second in the purple belt lightweight
gi. Relson's and Longman's team combined since Royler's last
visit to strengthen the team. In the highlight of the tournament,
Relson Gracie Team's purple belt monster, Steve Hordinski, submitted
Brennan Kamaka in his first match of the four man invitational.
Black belt Joao Moraes won a controversial decision against Jesus
is Lord's Ron Jhun in a match that could have been decided either
way. The stage was set for Steve and Joao and they both did not
let the crowd down. We have been working on leg attacks and Steve
has been eating them up for a while now. Steve caught Joao in
a straight kneebar that made the crowd cringe. Joao, being the
warrior that he is didn't tap, so Steve switched to a heel hook,
and then a toe hold foot lock, all of which were pretty solid,
but Joao held out. After a bit of a scramble, Steve slapped on
a triangle with those muscle legs and got it in deep enough to
finally make Joao tap for the win of the WWF style belt and the
4-man Invitational Tournament Championship. I am sure that everyone
is looking forward to NAGA's next visit for a tournament that
is run by an outside organization trying to keep Hawaii's politics
at bay. Pictures shall be posted soon. |

Vitor
Belfort's Cut Elbow
The Internet and the fight game being what they are, Vitor Belfort
was concerned Thursday that some people would accuse him of finding
some excuse to back out of his planned UFC 33 fight with light-heavyweight
champion Tito Ortiz. He even promised to have his doctor send
us the photos of the 40 stitches that were sewn into his arm
following the training accident that cut open his arm Wednesday.
"The
doctor took the picture yesterday," he informed all those
skeptics Thursday. As he promised, here are those photos.
Vitor
hopes to return to training in about two weeks, and be ready
for UFC 34 on November 2. Thus far UFC has made no announcement
as to what they plan to do with Vitor. Since it looks like Tito
Ortiz will be defending his title on UFC 33, and he fought at
UFC 32 against Elvis Sinosic, it is doubtful that they would
book him for a third show in a row, especially when the main
event is scheduled to be the rematch of UFC heavyweight
champion Randy Couture and Pedro Rizzo. Tito also just may want
and need a rest at that point. In addition, Vitor would have
to pass a physical given by doctors from the state athletic commission
where the show will be held, and they may have different and
tougher standards than his own doctors in Brazil.
But
here is the evidence of Vitor's injury, ladies and gentlemen
of the fighting world. After you get done saying "ouch"
to yourselves, remember that this is a rough sport and more times
than many people realize, the injuries in training are more serious
than those you see in the rings and cages.

I
don't know about you, but I think I believe Vitor on this one.
I doubt that two weeks are going to be even close to enough time
for that cut to heal. Vladdy/Tito is going to be one hell of
a fight as well. |
