Draculino Speaks About Injury

The 29 year old BJJ black belt, Vinicius "Draculino" Magalhães was set to make his NHB debut at the SUPERBRAWL 5th ANNIVERSARY, fighting the ADCC 2001 runner up Baret Yoshida. But while training Muay Thai with his student Velloso, Draculino injured his right knee.

"After a clinch, I threw a leg kick but he defended with his shin. The problem was that it hit right in the side of my knee, that I had surgery in last year" he explained. He thought it was not that serious and kept training, making the injury get even worse. "I felt a lot of pain, but since my body was warmed up I kept training for more 3 rounds. That was when it got complicated because my knee swelled a lot".

Now he will have to stay a long time away from training, but he doesn't know how long. "It's still early to say when I'll be back. The doctor said in 90 days, but I intend to get back earlier, if everything works out well". When asked about what he's going to do next, Draculino said: "Now I'm focusing on my recuperation. Yesterday the doctor checked my knee and left me sad because apparently I do not have a fracture, but he told me that the symptoms were typical of a meniscus rupture with ligament trauma."

Today however, after applying ice and strong anti-inflammatories I'm not feeling much pain and the swelling reduced, but I still can't bend my leg normally. At least I'm already walking. Hopefully, I won't need to have another surgery", said the black belt from Gracie Barra. But, does he still want to fight Yoshida? "Sure! I think Baret is one of the best fighters in this weight class, and it would be great to fight him", said Draculino, adding that there is no bad blood at all between them. "Some people asked if I don't like him, but I don't know why. He seems to be a very nice guy, and I had never said anything bad about him".

In spite of being disappointed, Draculino is still positive about a great fight between them happening in the future. "I'm sure our fight will be very good to watch because of our style and technical level. I hope one day we give a great showing to the fans", he said. "I'd also like to thank you for the opportunity and send a big hug to all the readers and the staff of the ADCC News". FIGHTWORLD.com Brazil wishes good luck and a speedy recovery to this great fighter, and a class act, Vinicius "Draculino" Magalhães.

July 4th BBQ

As with tradition, the Relson Gracie Aiea Academy is planning another BBQ at Ala Moana Beach Park on the fourth of July. We always have a great time and usually stay late enough get to see the fireworks show. Rex was kind enough to volunteer to wake up early to secure our spot and be there at 6:00-6:30 AM. We will have it at the key hole, near the tennis courts in the middle of the park. All of Relson's students and friends are welcomed. The more the better. It will be a potluck so bring what you can and if we can organize something, maybe I can post what people will bring so we don't have duplicate dishes. It worked out ok the last time. We will play volleyball and water football. This is a good opportunity to hang out with your Jiu-Jitsu friends and bring your family for a fun time at the beach.

Welterweight Bout 3 Rounds
Tony DeSouza defeated Paul Rodriguez by guillotine at 1:13 min in round 1.
Paul shot in on Tony who sprawled and went for a one arm in guillotine (also known as the 10 fingers). Paul lifted Tony and Tony switched to a normal guillotine and Paul tapped while standing.

Heavyweight Bout 3 Rounds
Ricco Rodriguez defeated Andrei Arlovski by referee stoppage in round 3.
It looked like Ricco dominated the fight. The fight was stopped while Ricco mounted Andrei.

Light Heavyweight Bout 3 Rounds
Vladimir "The Janitor" Matyushenko defeated Yuki Kondo by a unanimous decision.
Vlady showed solid takedown skills and a good pass throughout the bout. Kondo tried one of his flying knees in the second round, but missed. Vladdy hit a mean side kick right to the gut of Kondo and then took him down and landed some powerful shots for a easy decision.

Lightweight Bout 3 Rounds
Caol "Uno Shoten" Uno defeated Fabiano Iha by knockout at 1:49 min in round 1.
Uno landed some huge shots from the guard of Iha and knocked him out from there.

Welterweight Bout 3 Rounds
Pat Miletich defeated Shonie Carter by knockout at 2:42 min in round 2.
Miletich who was in the hospital last night with three bags of IV because he was dehydrated from cutting weight landed a beautiful right round house kick to the head of Carter that put him out.

Heavyweight Bout 3 Rounds
Josh "The Baby Faced Assassin" Barnett defeated Semmy Schilt by arm bar from the guard at 4:21 min of round 1.
Barnett shed down to 15% body fat (losing 10% body fat) and looked lean and mean. He immediately took down Schilt and controlled the fight. Barnett went for a pretty weak arm bar and Semmy turned the fight. Barnett made up for the last arm bar attempt by pulling off a nice arm bar from the guard for the win.

Lightweight Bout 3 Rounds
Hawaii's BJ "The Prodigy" Penn defeated Din Thomas by knockout at 2:42 min in round 1. BJ went for a takedown, which was defended well by Thomas. BJ delivered some good knees, but Din got the top. One of BJ's legs was trapped and he took some shots from the guard. BJ made space and got up where Din through a hook from hell. BJ timed it perfectly and entered as the punch passed by. He grabbed Din with his one free hand and delivered a huge knee that set Din on his back. BJ rushed in and while in Din's guard landed about three accurate punches to the face which was enough to have the referee stop the fight.

Light Heavyweight Championship Bout 5 Rounds
Tito Ortiz defeated Elvis Sinosic at 3:32 min in round 1 by referee stoppage after punches from the guard.
Both men traded punches and kicks with Tito getting the better of the two. They clinch and Tito takes Elvis down and moves him toward the fence. Tito lands some brutal punches and elbows to Elvis' face. One elbow opens a huge cut over the eye of Elvis. After a while, Big John has seen enough and stops the fight.

After the match was over, Tito made like someone threw him an imaginary shovel and he dug a grave for Elvis. He made like he laid down Elvis and covered him up. Then, Tito stomped on the imaginary grave. Tito put on a t-shirt that on the front said Team Punishment. The back said, "That's American for Whoop Ass, Mate." Tito is now sponsored by Rodman Entertainment, yup Dennis Rodman of NBA fame. It's funny that his ex-wife, Carman Electra, was named as the spokeswomen for the UFC. Also in Tito's corner was Fred Durst of Limp Biskit.

This UFC continues to be a major improvement over the past UFC's. It is 100% more entertaining with pyrotechnics, fighter profiles, and laser lights. It was great to see it live, hopefully next time, we will be able to watch it in our own homes on In Demand cable. We thank Kai Kamaka who was a great host and invited us over to watch the UFC on his newly purchased satellite dish. It was a great event with some great friends.

Satellite Dish

A friend of ours got the dish worked out. Good news is that he can receive the UFC and I'm invited. Bad news is a major venue could not be put together in time so the rest of you is out of luck. I'll probably post a post fight description of what I remember on Saturday.

Check out the great press conference reports for the UFC on the FCF and Abu Dhabi websites.

BJ Article Published in Hilo

According to a good friend, the article I wrote about BJ being in the UFC was published in the Hilo Tribune Herald Wednesday.

Since I wrote the article and it has been published, I guess I can post it here. It's a bit long, but hey, we need to give as much press as possible to the Hawaii boys doing good right? Enjoy!

Hawaii Fighter BJ Penn Enters the Big Time
by Michael Onzuka
Mike@onzuka.com

Determination, skill, and sacrifice. Traits of many competitors and athletes, but why are there so few champions? Along with these attributes, some say that talent and luck are the missing ingredients that can make the difference between first and second place. Whatever it is, BJ Penn has it. He started as a youngster in Hilo without direction and clear goals. For a change of pace, he moved up to northern California and started taking Gracie (or Brazilian) Jiu-Jitsu classes from the founder's grandson, Ralph (pronounced Halph) Gracie. BJ quickly took to the techniques that emphasize technique and leverage over power and with his natural flexibility, became a force in the west coast Jiu-Jitsu tournaments. With every tournament BJ has won, more and more people in the Jiu-Jitsu circles started taking note of this youngster.

BJ comes from a family of four boys, all named Jay Dee, except for one. No not BJ, but his youngest brother Reagan. BJ is, in fact, an abbreviation of Jay Dee. BJ's father is named Jay Dee as is his three oldest sons. The three boys worked out their own system for distinguishing one another, the oldest son is called Jay, the middle, JD, and the youngest or baby of the family at the time is called Baby Jay or BJ for short. The youngest of the brothers, Reagan, arrived and broke the Jay Dee streak. All of the brothers' train in Jiu-Jitsu and all have had similar success adapting their bodies to the simplistic, but effective martial art which focuses on ground grappling techniques.

BJ's youngest brother, Reagan, turned out to be the family's first world champion. In 1998, after only about one year of training, BJ and Reagan, with only six months of training, traveled to Brazil to compete in the Mundial (pronounced moon jawl) or World Championships of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Both competed in the blue belt division, which is the belt following white belt. Reagan won the 160-pound weight class, while BJ lost a close final match to finish second in the 147-pound class. BJ now knew that he could not only compete with the best in the world, but also had a very good chance at winning. He returned to Brazil, focused and determined to train harder and win the world championships. One year of concentrated training paid off when he was promoted to the next belt up, purple belt. Under a new team and school, Nova Uniao (New Union), BJ returned only to be promoted to brown belt a week before the upcoming World Championships. BJ took this in stride and ended up finishing third, losing to the competitor that would become the champion. BJ's quest for the world championship that has once again eluded him had become even more clear and was almost within his grasp. He intensified his training and in 2000, along with being promoted to black belt once again a week before the competition, BJ satisfied his dream of becoming a world champion by being the first Non-Brazilian Black Belt World Champion. Hawaii has produced world champions at the blue, purple, and brown belt divisions, but never at the black belt division. BJ was now at the top of the grappling world and all this from a quiet man from a small town on a rock in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

With that goal completed, BJ looked to other ways to satisfy his competitive urges. Many Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practioners were moving in to the sport of Mixed Martial Arts, which was brought to American soil from Brazil in the form of the Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC in 1993. A skinny Brazilian was thrust in a cage with fighters of all martial arts backgrounds to see who had the most effective technique and fighting ability. Time after time, this 6 foot 1 inch, 178 pound warrior made all of his opponents, some who outweighed him by over 80 pounds, submit with his graceful ground techniques and claimed the UFC title three times and one time beating four opponents in one night.

Many people see this new fighting art as barbaric, but if you break up the components of this sport, it is nothing more than a combination of sports that Americans love to watch and have been viewing for years. Mixed Martial Arts (formally called No-Holds-Barred) is a combination of boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and Judo. Sometimes, the fights are held in cages to prevent the fighters from falling out or in normal boxing rings. The competitors utilize smaller gloves that allow them to still use their hands to grapple and perform submission holds. These smaller gloves often do more damage to the puncher's hands than the person being hit. In addition, unlike boxing and kickboxing, combatants can verbally submit and not lose face. This in itself makes the sport much more humane than boxing. If a boxer gave up, he would be black listed and never asked to fight again. There are now many Mixed Martial Arts events, which include the Superbrawl and Warrior's Quest, held here regularly in Hawaii. The Ultimate Fighting Championship was the first and still remains the most prestigious Mixed Martial Arts event in America hands down.

With new weight classes being implemented in the UFC to appease the boxing commissions that are beginning to sanction the UFC, BJ Penn was invited to make his fighting debut in this prestigious event mainly because of his success in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Penn made good on his opportunity and dominated Chicago based wrestler/fighter, Joey Gilbert. BJ has made such an impression on the newly changed UFC management that he has been welcomed back to fight top rated Din Thomas in the semi-main event in only his second fight. Thomas has recently defeated another top local fighter at a recent event here in Hawaii. The winner of this fight could be within one or two fights of the Bantamweight UFC Championship. While up in San Jose, I talked with BJ and he seems very calm and confident for someone who may own his second world title in a matter of months. He has stated that he is, "trained and am well prepared," for this fight. The pressure of this big fight in front of a national audience does not seem to affect him.

The UFC has been blacked out to Hawaii audiences because TimeWarner, who owns Oceanic Cable, has decided not to support these fighting events. Hawaii fans would have to wait for tapes of the events from the Mainland or until the production video was released, which could be months after the event has aired live. Satellite companies have come to the rescue. Companies like Primestar and Direct TV has been the saviors of this struggling sport. Due to the expensive rates for sports bars, once again, Hawaii fans were left high and dry. Once Hawaii's star, BJ Penn, was confirmed on the main card of the upcoming June 29th UFC, a mad scramble has been implemented to allow local fans to support one their own. BJ's father has converted the Hilo Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu School in to a viewing room, which includes the satellite equipment and seating in order to allow the Big Island to show their support for his son. The school is located at 21 Kalanianaole Highway, behind Verna's Restaurant. The show is expected to start at 3:00 PM and everyone is invited. Unfortunately, no venue on Oahu is airing the UFC. Fight fans are asked to contact Oceanic Cable and voice their desire to make these events available for Hawaii audiences to view. This lone venue is a light at the end of the dark tunnel, which will slowly help bring this new and exciting sport to the forefront of pay-per-view sporting events to Hawaii viewing audiences.

Costco Satellite Dish Direction?

A friend of ours just bought a satellite dish from Costco, but does not know what direction to point the dish. I'm not sure of the brand, but if someone knows the brand of dish they sell there and/or the direction to point the dish, please
email or call me (381-9530). Thanks!

Draculino Now Out

Did I jinx Baret? The minute I say that Draculino is confirmed, he suffers a knee ligament injury and has to pull out of Super Brawl so once again, Baret is left without a fight. Draculino has had major knee problems and recently said that he was back training hard again, but I guess the knees are back in trouble again.

Brazil Anyone?

Pat Wang, the official Gracie Jiu-Jitsu travel agent, has just informed me that right now plane fares to Brazil is only $900 round trip. This is the lowest price that I have ever seen. If you are interested, you must call Pat as soon as possible at King's Travel 593-4481. I understand that it is better than two to one when exchanging American dollars for Real so this is a great time to go. I'm going to try to return next year if all goes as planned. See below for this year's Mundial and Master's dates.

2001 International Master and Senior Jiu-Jitsu Championship

The tournament will take place on September 1st and 2nd at Iate Clube Jardim Guanabara, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

2001 World Jiu-Jitsu Chapionship

The tournament will take place on July 26, 27,28 and 29 at Tijuca Tenis Clube, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Vitor "Shaolin" Riberio has stated that he will move up to the 173 class which may include Terere, Nino, Margarida, Roleta, Alexandre Riberio, among others which will be a very tough class.

You can find further information of both at www.cbjj.com.br

Something Big is Coming Soon

I have been told by a very reliable source that Hawaii can expect a huge event here by the end of the year. I will need to wait until things get more concrete, but Hawaii fans will be in for a treat. Sorry to keep you hanging, but I have to for now.

BJ Penn & Tony DeSouza Interview

While up in San Fran, as I previously stated, I interviewed BJ and Tony about their upcoming UFC fights. The interview is up on the Full Contact Fighter Website. There is also an excellent Tito Ortiz article posted today.

Baret/Draculino is On

T. Jay Thompson has informed me that the Baret Yoshida/Vinicius "Draculino" Magalhaes is signed, sealed, and delivered. Draculino is a black belt in BJJ from the famed Barra Gracie School run by Carlinhos Gracie Jr. and has produced such killers as Renzo, Ryan Gracie, Nino Schembri, Marcio Feitosa, Roleta, Soca, and Gordo. I think Draculino will be in for a surprise when he faces Hawaii's Baret Yoshida who is getting better by the day.

Relson in Italy

Relson is currently in Italy doing a series of seminars for the growing Jiu-Jitsu practioner base in Europe. According to the Abu Dhabi page, being a blue belt is a big thing there. I know some guys that may move to Europe because of that and so they can be a big shot (heh heh).

I have also heard that soon we may finally have showers at the academy. Our construction superintendent is finally finished with a big project that has been keeping him busy for a long time.

Congratulations to our newest purple belt, Mike Wery! He has been training for many years and is one of the few people that actually likes to roll with Eric Sacks. God knows I don't.

Hawaii's BJ Penn Leaves for NJ

Black belt world champion, BJ Penn, leaves today to New Jersey to compete in the UFC against Din Thomas that will take place this Friday. I talked with his brother yesterday. I also submitted an article on BJ for the Hilo Tribune Herald which is the main newspaper in Hilo. It should come out within a day or two. Anybody that sees it, please buy a couple of copies and send it to me.

We are still working on getting a place to watch the UFC. We have one more option now, but must see if it will fly. Again, let's cross our fingers.

Ruff Man Last Night

The first Ruff Man was held last night at Blaisdell Arena. It went through some growing pains because of the lack of personnel, which you would expect since this is their first time here and I'm sure that the budget only allowed for the bare minimum people to come help. The fights went from comical to very entertaining and everything in between. We are awaiting the official results that should be faxed to us soon. Aiea academy student and resident big man, Malcolm Ahlo entered the grappling event, which was a Pancrase style fight and was successful controlling all aspects of the fight. Other than a single light bitch slap, Malcolm made his opponent pay for it and ended the fight with a one hand choke, I believe. Abe Rodriguez jumped in the ring after one guy did not have a match. Abe made very short work of a inexperienced, but game fighter. He even played to the crowd when he obtained the back mount. The Ruff Man crew plan to come back and say that they run three events a month in the Indiana and Ohio areas. I have to say that all in all, it was an entertaining event and if you didn't enjoy the technique, you at least broke a laugh with some of the antics that was going on in the ring.

Plea for UFC Satellite Help

Apparently, there is trouble figuring out what is exactly needed in order for Oahu fans to watch the UFC. If any body knows anything about getting the UFC seen on the satellite dish at Gussie's, please email or call me. T. Jay has been calling all over the place and still can't seem to get the answers that he needs. We don't have much time (the UFC is this Friday).

Mike Back from San Fran

I left early Monday morning and returned late Thursday from a business trip to San Fransisco (more specifically Pleasanton). I got a chance to drive down to Santa Clara and visit BJ Penn during his preparation for the UFC. To my surprise, all the brothers were there, Jay, JD, BJ, and Reagan. Fellow teammate and upcoming UFC fighter, Tony DeSouza, was also there preparing for his fight against Paul Rodriguez. They both train at the American Kickboxing Academy which is run by World Champion Kickboxer, Javier Mendez, who trains Frank Shamrock. While I was there, I saw various fighters such as Crazy Bob Cook, Dave Velasquez, Brian Johnston, and Ishizawa (Japanese Pro-Wrestler who fought Ryan Gracie in Pride). I did an interview with BJ, Tony, and Javier, which hopefully will be either in the next issue of FCF or on their website soon.

Ruff Man Set For Tomorrow

Blaisdell Arena is the site for the first Ruff Man event that will have a modified grappling (more like a Pancrase event) and NHB matches. The night matches begin at 8:00 PM. Mike is slated to be the referee, but he will find out when he arrives there at 6:00 PM for a rules briefing. Chris will cover the event for FCF. This is an amateur event so don't expect pro's to be competing. As always, we ask that we all support Mixed Martial Arts events here so that we will have more events to view.

So Far No UFC on Oahu

I just got word late yesterday that as of now, Gussie's cannot carry the UFC because they will need to get additional items for their satellite system, which may not be in by the time the UFC aires next Friday. Also, still no confirmation that Oceanic Cable will allow their digital systems to carry the UFC as well. We are still working on this or another venue so let's keep our fingers crossed.

Plans are set for a Tiger-Inoue 2 fight

There has been a rumor going around that Egan Inoue and Marcelo Tiger would have a rematch at the Future Brawl in July. Well, that mastermind, T. Jay Thompson has found a better way to hype the event and bring in a better draw [attendance for those who are not hip to the lingo]. The up and coming July 21st show will feature Tiger fighting Inoue's "top" student and Inoue fighting Tiger's "top" student. I put top in " " because each fighter's opponent is limited to matching them up by weight, so technically, these opponents are Tiger and Inoue's top students in their respective weight classes.

Currently, Tiger is to face boxer turned NHB fighter Tali Kulihaapai. This may present more of a problem for Tiger than it appears because Tiger likes to take punches and Tali can hit. Egan's opponent is rumored to be Mike Malone. Malone is a kickboxer that has had a couple of NHB fights. No offense to Mike, but this would not be much of a match for Egan. Malone does not have that much experience in NHB and his grappling is no where near Egan's level. But again, this is just a rumor that was circulating and has not been announced. We will keep you updated if any more info surfaces.

Bitch slaps are allowed in the Grappling portion of the Ruff Man

Ruff Man
Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii
Sunday, June 24th, 2001

I recently spoke with Dr. Jim Thomas, the promoter of the Ruff Man and he said that bitch (open hand) slaps are allowed in the submission grappling tournament. I guess this is a step toward Pancrase-styled events and not true submission grappling.

The whole event is a traditional martial arts tournament during the day (forms, katas, breaking, point sparring) and then at 8PM starts the Ruff Man portion. There is a 3 different categories. One is a submission grappling portion that allows open hand slaps (mentioned above), a tough man, which is stand up striking. It is like normal tough man contests, except that kicks above the waist are allowed. And finally the Ruff Man, which is an NHB type of event for amateurs.

This is the first time that a NHB type event has been joined to a traditional martial arts competition. We shall see how it goes, but I think it is good for the sport because it will widen our audience and hopefully bring in more traditional martial artists.

Odds for UFC and King of the Cage are in

Here are the odds to win for the UFC and KOTC taken from MVP Sportsbook's web site. If you are a wagering man, then you would find this of interest. If not, you may be interested to see how the pro's split the odds on each fight. For you guys who don't bet (like me), here are how the odds work; if you bet on Sinosic, for every $100 that you put up, you would win $200. And because Ortiz is the favorite, for every $200 that you put on Ortiz, you would win $100. The favored fighter is always skewed, so that someone can't win very much money betting on the favorite.

Baret Yoshida versus Draculino

Future Brawl's 5th Anniversary
Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii
July 21, 2001

T. Jay Thompson has been busy recovering from his back injury suffered recently and...putting together some spectacular matches for the event that will mark Future Brawl's 5th Anniversary. It is scheduled for July 21st and Thompson let out a little taste of what is to come. He informed me that Vincius "Draculino" Magalhaes, a Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt is making his NHB debut against submission grappling phenom from Hawaii, Baret "The Baretcuda" Yoshida. Draculino is a Pan American BJJ Champion and has placed 3rd twice in the World BJJ Championships [Mundial] has been looking to enter NHB and previously requested to fight Yoshida. Yoshida is also a BJJ black belt and has recently placed 2nd at the Combat Wrestling Championships in Japan, then 2nd [to Royler Gracie] in the 2001 Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling World Championships and a couple of weeks ago, Yoshida won the lightweight tournament in The Contenders in Japan. I can already hear the buzz starting from this match. Thompson promises to release more matches for his 5th Anniversary event shortly.

Warriors Quest 2 Main Events

Warriors Quest 2: "Battle of the Champions"
Hawaii Convention Center, Honolulu, Hawaii
September 1, 2001

Brennan Kamaka has just inked two outstanding main events for Warriors Quest 2, which will be the first mixed martial arts event ever held in the newly built Hawaii Convention Center. There is a hell of a lot of glass in that building and I hope it stands up to these two fights. Jesus Is Lord's Ray Cooper, fresh off his arm bar victory of Antonio McKee in the first Warriors Quest looks to defend his new title for the first time and stop Sean Sherk's total domination in the sport. Sherk is a giant packed into a small package, but if you ever saw him, he is bursting at the seams. This guy is a specimen. There hasn't been this much buzz about a fighter since Matt Hughes and rightfully so, since Sherk comes out of the same camp. The other main event released is Niko Fitale, who destroyed Todd Medina on his way to the Warriors Quest Light Heavyweight Championship, taking on another Miletich camp member in Joe Doerkson. Doerkson, like his teammate Sherk, has been on a roll, racking up 10 consecutive victories. We will see if Doerkson can stop Vitale. Kamaka has put together some great matches, even though he is a new to the "promoting game." More matches will be released as the event gets closer.

Lightweight Championship Match
Ray "Bradda" Cooper (Jesus Is Lord)
Warriors Quest Lightweight Champion
4x Superbrawl Champion, 5th Ranked in Shooto
vs.
Sean Sherk (Team Extreme, Minnesota Martial Arts Academy, 17-0)
King of the Cage Superfight Champion, UFC veteran

Light Heavyweight Championship Match
Falaniko Vitale (Grappling Unlimited, 9-1)
Warriors Quest Light Heavyweight Champion
Rage in the Cage Hawaii Champion, KOTC debut Winner
vs.
Joe Doerkson (Team Extreme, 15-2)

I believe Mike is preparing the results, but in the meantime, the Gracie staff wants to thank everyone who helped make the tournament run smoothly. (we want to apologize to anyone that we missed)

Now that the Gracie Academy is, well, is sort of under "new" management, we want to work toward constantly improving every detail of our tournaments. One aspect that has been a sore spot has been the lack of participation of referees and general help in our tournaments. Bruno Ewald (Long Man) has consistently helped referee, but other instructors have been reluctant to step up and help referee. Presently, every academy has more than one instructor or has assistant instructors qualified to help coach their competitors, allowing at least one instructor to serve as a referee. We are not asking you to referee the whole day, but it would be nice to have a referee that is a from a different academy than the two competitors. We strive to be objective and fair in every match, but some instructors still seem to think that every call that goes against their student is a blantant action meant to scar their whole academy. That's a joke, but you get want I mean.

There has always been small verbal "disagreements" at BJJ tournaments, hell, it is almost tradition. I know that I have been a contributor to this and I will be the first to apoligize for that, but I have just entered Assholes Anonymous and my therapists says that I am making progress. We would like to work toward cooler heads and open minds in order to come to acceptable solutions. Every one is human, so it is normal for referees to make mistakes, if one has, please bring it to our attention and we can review the videotape and have an objective party settle any disagreements. The referee is the law on the mat or else people would not want to referee if every single mistake led to a reversal. If upon review, the referee agrees with an error, then a correction will be made.

We want to have the tournament run faster, be more "competitor friendly," and be a safe environment to compete and help to grow the sport of BJJ that we all love. Please feel free to
email us with any suggestions that you have or solutions to any problems that you have witnessed.

Thank you again for everyone's help and congratulations to every athlete that strives to improve themselves by entering our tournament.
