Other family pages Katsuda (Other families that were previously mentioned, please feel free to email me.) History of the Onzuka name In Fukuoka, Japan,
there was a river near a small village. During a war, Samurai
crossed the river and sought refuge from their enemies.
The people of the village hid them in their village. Around
this this time houses were made out of mud and straw. When
the Samurais enemies left, they were extremely greatful
to the people of the village. So greatful that they gave
them the name Onzuka, literally meaning hidden
house. This was during a time when family members
were known only by their first names. To be given a family
name by one of the noble class (the Samurai or royalty)
was an honor. This eludes to the fact that people with
the same last name are not necessarily related.
The City of Kurume is located at the center of the Chikushi Plains which were formed by the Chikugo River, the largest in Kyushu. The city is surrounded by the verdant Mino Mountain Range and blessed with rich natural surroundings in which flowers bloom year round, including Kurume azaleas and the yellow Nanohana (rape blossoms). From olden times, Kurume prospered as a castle town in Kurume-han, and since the Meiji Era, developed as a town famous for its "Kasuri (splashed) Pattern" textiles and its rubber industry. Kurume City has the third largest population in the Fukuoka Prefecture, after the cities of Fukuoka and Kitakyushu. Still now, Kurume is continuing to develop as a core city in the southern area of the Fukuoka Prefecture in which the city functions of commerce, industry, and culture are concentrated. Furthermore, Kurume is a historical place which has a trace of the former castle town it used to be, having the Onzuka and Gogenzuku burial mounds, historical sites such as Korataisho Shrine, the remains of Kurume Castle, Suitengu Shrine, Bairinji Temple, and temple towns. It is also a place filled with culture and was the birthplace of a large number of artists, including Shigeru Aoki and Hanjiro Sakamoto. Currently, Kurume is establishing the Kurume Business Park, and is promoting itself as a base for science and research to attract businesses from around the world. He won one divisional and one league title during his tenure. His assistant, Glenn Tokunaga, has been named to replace him. Prep Notebook From staff and wire reports A Waianae High School assistant baseball coach who bumped an umpire with his chest during a heated dispute in a 1994 game on Kauai spent last weekend in jail. Fred Kuhaulua Sr., 43, the Seariders' pitching coach for eight years, was sentenced to a weekend in jail and fined $1,000 on charges of assault, by Circuit Court George Masuoka last Thursday. The judge also suspended Kuhaulua from coaching for a year and told him he can't attend any sporting events unless they involve his children. Waianae High athletic director Harry Mitsui said he needs to receive official word of the proceedings before he can say anything about Kuhaulua's status with the school. The incident occurred between Kuhaulua and umpire Gordon Bonilla after a play at third base during a game against Kauai High, according to Kauai coach Kenneth Mizuo. Waianae coach Ralph Onzuka said the call was made from behind second base by Bonilla. Kuhaulua was the third base coach at the time and Onzuka was coaching at first. Bonilla said called interference on a base runner who stuck out his arm to deflect the ball during a rundown between second and third. "Then the coach ran toward me at a full sprint and bumped me, pushed me back about five feet, and then he bumped me again,"Bonilla said. "At that point, I had had enough, ... so I left the field to call the police." Bonilla ejected Kuhaulua from the game. Masuoka told Kuhaulua that coaches have a tremendous effect on young athletes so they should always set a good example. Court records show that Kuhaulua was first indicted on a felony assault count because the umpire worked for the state Department of Education. But Kuhaulua later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge. again favored in Western Division At Waianae, Glenn Tokunaga takes over for Ralph Onzuka, who coached for 15 years. At Moanalua, Scott Yamada steps in for Ritchie Kibota. And at Nanakuli, football coach Skip Lopes takes over for Todd Tashiro, who ended a six-year winless streak two seasons ago. He led Nanakuli to six wins in its first seven games last year. Waianae could figure into the race with several key returnees, including right-handed pitchers Kaulana Kuhaulua and Philip Sarono, center fielder Nathan Jackson and catcher Bobby Lee Tavares. http://www.starbulletin.com/98/03/27/sports/prepbeat.html
