Waiting on Confirmation of UFC
My source
has stated that there is still no word that Oceanic will indeed
carry the UFC. Also, the venue is awaiting booking the group
showing. We must just wait with our fingers crossed. |

Tournament
Weigh-Ins Today
The weigh-ins
are at the Relson Gracie Academy on 844 Queen St. (near the Blaisdell
Arena) all day today. Be sure to weigh in on time because we
will be making the keys tonight so that we have a jump on the
start of the tournament. The tournament is tomorrow at Kaiser
High School. This year we are implementing many of the international
rules so if you have questions, address them at the weigh in
and make sure you are there for the rules clinic before the tournament
begins. We now are very close to a total adoption of the rules
utilized at the Mundials (World Championships) and the Pan Am's.
If
you are free around 3:30 or 4:00 pm, please call Todd at the
academy to help set up the mats for the tournament. These mats
are a bear to handle and any help would be appreciated. |

Rankings Updated
With the
Shoot ranking updated, local fighter Baret Yoshida moves up yet
another spot to number two in the tough Lightweight division.
All other local fighters hold their position. An item to note
is that the S in the record indicates winner by submission. Ray
"Bradda" Cooper will look to advance his position in
the rankings by fighting Tetsuji Kato on July 6th in Japan. If
Bradda wins, this will be huge for his rankings and cause a major
wake in the middleweight division.

UFC
Showing in Hilo
BJ's father
has arranged for the UFC to be shown FRIDAY, JUNE 29TH, in the Nova Uniao School, behind Verna's Restaurant
at 21 Kalanianaole Highway. I believe he has three TV's there so if you are
anywhere near Hilo stop in to support Hilo's BJ Penn in his second
fight in the UFC against the tough and experienced Din Thomas.
BJ is in the semi-main event. If BJ wins, he may get a title
shot against Jens Pulver in only his third professional fight.
The UFC should start around 3:00 PM.
We
are currently working on a venue here on Oahu to watch the event.
It seems very close to completion of the deal.
Here's UFC Vice President Joe Silva's fight preview taken
from the Abu Dhabi Site:
Tony DeSouza
v. Paul Rodriguez (Under 170 lbs Welterweight): "Tony beat a real tough guy in Steve Berger
but I think that Paul Rodriguez is a big step up. He knocked
out Dennis Hallman, he beat Ray Cooper by submission recently,
he is tough and he has some really tough fights on smaller shows.
Paul was willing to fight anyone, even Pat Miletich. Tony seems
to have the potential to be a force in his division and this
fight will show what he's got."
Ricco Rodriguez
v. Andrei Orlovski (205 lbs. + Heavyweight): "Orlovski is an X factor - he is 1-0 in
our show, beating Aaron Brink, but people don't know how to measure
him. Ricco is a tough guy, he has been on a winning streak. Ricco's
competition level has not been that high, but he is definitely
a tough guy, so this is a good test for both fighters."
Vladimir Matyushenkyo
v. Yuki Kondo (Under 205 lbs. Lightheavyweight): "This match is intriguing. I have a lot
of respect for Yuki Kondo, he was even offered a title shot in
the 185 lb class, but his people did not want him at 185 lbs.
they feel he is getting bigger and stronger and is comfortable
at 205. I think he is a dangerous striker, with good submissions
- he surprised Tito with a jumping knee, and he is a former King
of Pancrase. Vladimir has acquired a reputation for being very
tough, he has only 1 loss in a controversial decision to Vernon
White. Vlady is a wrestler who likes to throw a lot of strikes,
and he is aggressive. I am excited because I can picture many
different outcomes in this fight!"
Fabiano Iha
v. Caol Uno ( Under 155 lbs lightweight): "I think Uno is one of the best in the world
at this weight. He is a former SHOOTO Champion, and on any given
day, Uno can beat anyone at this weight class. Iha is on a winning
streak at a bigger weight division, can he cut the weight? He
says he is much faster, just as strong and he is feeling good
at this weight. Endurance could be a problem because of the weight
cutting but if he does hold up Iha will be a force at this weight
as well. This should be a great fight."
Pat Miletich
v. Shonie Carter (Under 170 lbs Welterweight): "I wanted to do this match, but I did not
expect to do it until September, but Pat is very focused and
wanted to fight immediately. He is the first Champion we had
at 170 and he wants his belt back. Shoney is coming off a great
fight, I think Shonie fought the fight of his life against Matt
Serra, and I think he is ready to do it again - he wants to fight
Pat, he know he gets a title shot if he gets by him. This is
a rematch, and Pat won the first match, but he gets a lot of
flack because it could have gone either way - I think it is also
a motivator - getting his belt back and showing what he can do
to Carter when he is healthy is driving Pat right now."
Josh Barnett
v. Semmy Schilt (205 lbs. + Heavyweight): "Barnett is coming off an impressive loss,
everyone wanted him back after that fight. That was Josh's first
loss, and I think he learned from it, I think he gained popularity
with it. He gave Rizzo all he could handle. Schilt decimated
Pete Williams, and Williams is an excellent fighter. He is
dangerous with knees, and he has a lot of reach. If these guys
decide to stand up I think it will be a war - very exciting.
On the ground, I have to give the advantage to Barnett. This
is one that almost everyone wants to watch."
Din Thomas v.
BJ Penn ( Under 155 lbs Lightweight): "I think this has the potential
to be the fight of the night. Din Thomas has proven to be one
of the best in the world, he has wins over Pulver, Mishima and
tough guys. Penn is a crazy phenomenon, so many
different sources give this guy a lot of respect and praise.
His talent is there, but this could be a situation about experience
- Din has talent and experience, and BJ lacks
experience. They both can strike, they both can do great stuff
on the ground - I would
pay to see this one!"
TITLE MATCH
: Tito Ortiz v. Elvis Sinosic (Under 205 lbs. Lightheavyweight): "If Tito comes in here and
he squashes Elvis, it is not that Elvis didn't belong there,
it is just that Tito is squashing everybody right now. He's a
monster. Tito likes to learn, he works so hard, and he is so
young. He continues to get better. He is just a great athlete.
Tito is everything you could want in a world champion. I do think
people are underestimating Elvis. This guy is always the underdog,
he always fights on short notice. Horn was in line for the title
match, Sinosic submitted him. Submission guys are dangerous and
Elvis has been training for 2 months straight. He has taken off
work to train. I expect to see a much improved Elvis Sinosic
and he was damn good before. Elvis has a little height and reach
advantage, which Tito is not used to, and Elvis can use that.
He can be a spoiler. I can see a scenario where Elvis gets beat
up for 4 and a half rounds and then pulls off a submission. We
shall see."

Ruff
Man
On Sunday,
June 24th, 2001 at Blaisdell Arena, Hawaii debuts another martial
arts event called the Ruff Man. It will be a all in one event
with point Karate/Tae Kwon Do forms, demonstrations, sparring,
board breaking, stand up sparring, grappling, and a mixed martial
arts event. The event starts at 9:00 am and it seems to be an
all day event. Entry in to any one of these competitions is $20
and you can enter by calling 765-939-0780 (Dr. Jim Thomas) during
the day or 765-965-5425 after 9:00 pm. It is stated that they
will not accept professional fighters in this event. Some of
the rules that are common for the standup, grappling, and NHB
are mouth piece is mandatory, come to the ring with a towel and
water bottle, groin cup required, no tapping of hands, two corner
men are required (they have to purchase a ticket), referee can
stop fight if fighter does not tap, cornermen and fighters must
be professional or risk disqualification. A couple weird items
to note is that in this "professional" event, "bitch
slaps" are allowed, kicking to the head is ok, punching
and kicking to the body is legal, headbutts to the body are also
allowed IN THE GRAPPLING MATCH. I think these people are confused
between what grappling and NHB is. I smell a law suit if someone
gets hurt. They do not state the admission fee, but this may
be worth checking out to see guys "bitch slap" each
other.

Oceanic
may be carrying the UFC
According
to one of our sources (I will give him credit if it is true),
In Demand, which is the Pay-per-view deal for Oceanic Cable,
is said to be carrying the UFC on June 29, 2001. I am trying
to verify this with an Oceanic representative and will post the
results. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Baret
Kicks Butt in Contenders Japan
G.C.M. The
CONTENDERS "Millennium-1"
ZEPP TOKYO
6/10/01
Once again, Hawaii's own, Baret "the Baretcuda" Yoshida
dominates the the world of NHB and grappling in the Japanese
version of the Contenders. I believe this show was the same as
the American version where it pits NHB fighters against each
other in a grappling match. No word as of yet to see if Baret
will ever get another Shooto match. At least he's keeping busy
with Abu Dhabi and this event. Hopefully, we'll see Baret fighting
again soon.

Grappling
in Kona
According to a friend who emailed us, the only two schools that
grapple in Kona are:
G&E Kenpo 329-1136
American Karate - 331-1161
As far as I know, there is not a BJJ instructor located in those
areas. Again, if I am incorrect or you have information to add,
please email me. |

Going Ok
So far so
good with the guestbook. Please make sure you sign in so we have
a feel on who is checking out our page and where you are from.
Please spread the word about our site to all your friends and
family. We want to give exposure to Hawaii based martial artists.
Our goal is to have people throughout the US and world or anyone
with ties to us (e.g. through Jiu-Jitsu, work, friends, etc.)
check our page to keep in touch with Hawaii martial arts and
information. Please stay honest with the posts and post only
from yourself. We do not want anyone in trouble for any type
of reason because they are providing their email or because of
the comments they write.
We will certainly take in and welcome any comments written and
possibly implement them in to our site. Sure, the Hawaiian Hottie
(Don't even think of stealing that name) is a great idea. We
just don't want Chris' wife and my fiance checking the page everyday
and answering to the questions of how we got the pictures. The
excuse of doing research and making sacrifices for the site is
not going to go over too well. If you want to send pictures in
WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE PERSON TO APPEAR ON THE SITE, please
do so. If you know us, we always try to accommodate the greater
good of the Jiu-Jitsu and NHB population. Call us the humanitarians
of the Hawaii web-based world. |

Kauai
Open is a Success!
Relson Gracie Association instructor, Kendall Goo, has been successful
and put on the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament on the island
of Kauai. A strong team from Ka Mole and Longman Jiu-Jitsu came
to compete and put on some great matches. The main academy and
Aiea academy of the Relson Gracie team brought only three competitors
(Brian Kaneshiro also came to compete, but because there was
no one anywhere near his weight, he ended up helping run the
tournament) to accent Kendall's students. Mike Onzuka, Relson
Gracie, and Fredson Alves were the referees and Mike helped Kendall
make the keys and organize the matches. The divisions were split
up in to an over and under 174 lb. weight class for the gi and
no gi. There were white and blue divisions of an open class.
Many relative unknown competitors came out to show why Kauai
always has tough fighters. The Big Three Relson Gracie Team members,
Malcolm Ahlo, Harris Brumer, and Eric Goo put on an exhbition
by shutting down the blue open weight, no gi heavy, and open
weight divisions. Kauai'an, Eric Goo, who enters any tournament
that comes down the pike, cashed in big when he submitted the
golith from the Ka Mole team, who was about 235 lbs and a good
wrestler. It was a very tight team competition with the Relson
Gracie Team claiming victory with 15 points (if you exclude the
children's exhibition match). The tournament was held in conjunction
with a huge Kajukempo competition, which is called the Kauai
Open. The kempo staff and competitors were very inviting and
helpful. This combination also helped spread the notoriety of
Jiu-Jitsu to another martial arts community. Hopefully, Jiu-Jitsu
fever has been instilled in some of the non-Jiu-Jitsu competitors
and they stop by their nearest school to check out a class. Congratulations
to all the competitors that helped this tournament be a success.

BJJ
in Kona?
We have received an inquiry if there are any BJJ schools, instructors,
or guys rolling in that area. If you are from that area and are
educated in BJJ enough to teach it or at least have techniques
to share, please email us so we can forward your information. |
Something
to Note...
As I was reviewing our page to look for errors, I noticed (See
6/3/01 post) that our association instructor in Florida, Lionel
Perez, beat up a Family Ties star played by Michael J. Fox (Alex
Keaton). As I remember, Alex Keaton was a pretty small guy. Nice
going Lionel! |
The
Guestbook is open for bid-ness!
Well, I finally got to it. As we first mentioned when we changed
web hosting providers, there are a lot of features that we CAN
offer. Unfortunately, we have not had the time to look into all
the features. Here is one we finally did look into. It is a guestbook/bulletin
board. You can sign in and post a comment.
Please take the time to click on the link above or right here to sign in. This will
give us a better picture of the visitors that we have. In the
comment section, please list your discipline (BJJ, Karate, Judo,
etc) and any comments or suggestions that you have about the
page or things that you would like to see.
We look forward to hearing from you!
PS
You like the new heading? Pretty good, eh? Many thanks to Ikaika,
the man of a million ideas! |

Fredson
Alves Seminar on Kauai
Gracie Humaita
BJJ black belt, Fredson Alves will be conducting a seminar the
day after the Kauai Open, Sunday, June 10th. Fredson has been
revolutionizing everyone's game at Relson Gracie academy. He
is not only a great teacher, but he is a small guy that rips
through everyone. He is gearing up for the Mundial, so he has
started his training mode and may train with everyone at the
seminar. I would not miss this seminar because after training
for over 9 years, I think that Fredson is one of the most technical
BJJ players to EVER come to Hawaii.

Celebration
for Zack
We have yet
to celebrate Zack's victory at the Warrior's Quest. Zack wants
to relax after the hard training he has done in preparation for
his NHB debut. The tentative plan is we'll start off at Mai Tai's
(cheap beer until 11:00 pm), then continue on to Ocean Club.
If you are twenty-three, bring a collar shirt. If you are under
twenty-three, you better come early to Mai Tai's and face the
fact that we're moving on at about 12:00 or 12:30. For all you

Kauai
Open This Weekend!
Relson Gracie
team member, Kendall Goo, states that all is a go for this Kauai
Open that is scheduled for this Saturday, June 8. There will
be a killer NAGA belt (that looks like the WWF championship belt)
as the prize for the no-gi absolute champion as well as a fighter's
notebook as an additional prize. The fighter's notebook is a
killer binder that show literally hundreds of no-gi moves. Mike
will be up there this weekend to help with the tournament as
well as support our team. The Kilauea Gym on the North Shore |
UFC
Card
As
usual, the UFC has put together another great card and released
it. Hawaii's BJ Penn gets the semi main event against Din Thomas.
Hawaii fans have seen Din Thomas in the last Superbrawl and know
how good this guy is. This will not be an easy fight for BJ because
Thomas has so much experience. Talk is that if BJ wins this match,
he will face Jens Pulver for the UFC lightweight title. BJ's
father and I have been looking at ways to watch the UFC. T. Jay
Thompson may have found a location. I will wait until the location
is confirmed, but it looks really good. We will start a publicity
drive for BJ once we have a venue set in stone. Remember, it
is very important that if you love the sport of MMA/NHB, you
have to actively support it in order to keep it running here,
either local events or a location that shows the pay-per-view
events. We have to make it profitable for a place to pay the
money to show the UFC or Pride and they will continue to do it.

Cooper
and Palling added to July 6th Shooto Card
This
is confirmed from the Jesus is Lord camp. For those of you that
don't know, Tetsugi Kato fights out of Enson Inoue's gym and
was the #1 ranked in Shooto and this fight was supposed to happen
a year or two ago. This should be a great one and an opportunity
for Ray to show his stuff. Bozo has told us in a conversation
after the Warrior's Quest that Shooto wanted him to fight the
number 7 ranked fighter. Now we have a name.
The SHOOTO organization just announced two very interesting
fights for their July 6th show, in Tokyo. Two athletes from Jesus
Is Lord team will be fighting. One fight will be in the Middleweight
division, where Ray "Bradda" Cooper, who's coming from
an impressive win - by a quick armbar - over Antonio McKee in
the Warriors Quest 2001 will fight the very tough Tetsuji Kato,
who lost his last fight to the rising Chute Boxe star, Anderson
Silva.
The
other fight - in the Lightweight division - is between the Japanese
fighter Kimihito Nonaka and the other Jesus Is Lord fighter,
Stephen "Bozo" Palling who also won his fight in Warrior
Quest 2001. According to the Lightweight champion Alexandre "Pequeno"
Nogueira, Palling is the lightweight version of Igor Vovchanchin,
so we can always expect a knockout coming from his heavy hands.

Congratulations
Lionel Perez!
Relson Gracie
association instructor, Lionel Perez competed in his first NHB
event this weekend. He was said to have dominated the fight from
the start and took it to the ground right away. He ended the
fight with an sweet armlock. This was the first BattleJax that
allowed punching on the ground. Our congratulations to our good
friend and Jiu-Jitsu brother!
Below
are the fight results and details From Battlejax
last Saturday May 26th in Jacksonville Florida:
Lionel
Perez defeated Alex Keaton by arm-bar at 2:20
into the 1st round.
This fight started with Alex Keaton throwing a couple of punches
but the fight quickly went to the ground. Perez showed he is a gifted grappler controlling Keaton.
Keaton while attempting to escape from the bottom position got
caught with a well-applied Arm-bar.

Lua,
the Hawaiian Art of Bone Breaking
Hawaii is a tropical
paradise. Tradewinds blowing across sun-warmed beaches, rainbows
over blue ocean surf, green mountains lush with verdant foliage.
It has been this way for thousands of years. But in pre-contact
times, war between
island kings often resulted in bloody battles for sovereignty.
The martial art of the ancient Hawaiian warriors is the fabled
art of lua*.
Lua encompasses
both the armed and unarmed combat techniques of the ancient Hawaiian
warriors. Isolated from outside influences, lua developed methods
for fighting with wooden weapons and bare hands. The bone breaking
techniques lua is known for resulted from battlefield expediency--break
your opponent's bones, and he can fight no more.
Army Men
Many ancient
cultures developed martial ways as part of a military regimen.
Best known are the Japanese arts of sumo, jujitsu, kendo, kyudo, and naginata-do, derived from samurai ryu, or
schools of martial knowledge. African tribes such as the Zulu
and Masai trained in the use of the spear and shield, and developed
devastating close-combat prowess using the assegai, or short spear.
Back in the
Pacific, the Filipino martial arts of arnis,
escrima, and kali grew
out of the combat training given to village fighters. Since fighters
would need to be trained quickly during times of inter-village
strife, or to protect against bandit attacks, the Filipino martial
arts taught techniques using the weapons that were at hand--a
short length of rattan cane, or the ubiquitous machete.
Sticks and stones
may break my bones...
This brings
us to lua's famed bone breaking techniques, used with or without
weapons. Lua is said to have encompassed over 300 techniques
to break bones and dislocate joints without the use of weapons.
Unarmed combat used joint manipulation, much as in jujitsu, and striking, much as in karate, kung
fu, or tae
kwon do.
Stories abound
of how the adept lua practitioner would strike nerve centers
in his opponent's body to render his opponent's limbs limp and
useless. The warrior would then start from the opponent's hand
and work his way up the arm, dislocating joints and breaking
bones. Some practitioners could reverse the damage they caused
by massaging pressure points and joint adjustment, seemingly
a precursor to the lomi lomi massage and chiropractic care of today.
Most of the time, though, the opponent was left to perish.
It's interesting
to note that lua contained techniques seen in other martial arts,
even though the Hawaiian Islands were isolated for centuries.
Pressure point striking is found in kung fu and karate, and is
related to the ancient Chinese medical art of acupuncture. Joint manipulation in fighting
can be seen in kung fu, jujitsu, judo, aikido, and hapkido, among others.
King Kamehameha, the monarch who united the Hawaiian Islands under
his rule, was renowned for his fighting ability. It was said
that the king could lift stones no other man could lift, and
was undefeated in single combat. Naturally, as king he undoubtedly
was taught lua techniques that no other warrior could learn.
I guess there are some perks to being king, huh?
While this bone-breaking
focus might sound brutal, remember, this was war! Defeat meant
the loss of one's kingdom--and certain death. And that included
the loss of entire islands, not just a beachfront condo in Waikiki.
A Lost Art
Today, the ancient
arts of lua are almost gone. In ancient times, it was kapu (forbidden)
to teach lua to non-royal warriors. In later years, kumu (teachers)
would instruct only native Hawaiians. Very few instructors of
lua exist today--but without their teachings, lua will become
yet another island fable.
*Yes, the word
lua also means WC, or toilet. No, I don't know why it's the same
word. If you know, please email me!

UFC
Help!
As you all
know, Hawaii fans are basically screwed when it comes to watching
the UFC live. We usually have to wait until someone gets a tape
which is way after the fact. The next UFC is going to feature
Hawaii's own Black Belt World Champion, BJ Penn, facing a killer
opponent in Din Thomas. You may remember Thomas from the last
Superbrawl where he triangled Bozo Palling and did not want to
remove his rash guard shirt before he fought. He is one of the
top lightweights in the world now and submitted the current UFC
Bantamweight Champion, Jens Pulver.
BJ's
father called me and we are looking to increase publicity regarding
this upcoming UFC locally because one of our own is fighting
in it. The first order of business is to find a venue here in
Oahu that will carry the event live. The main three locations
that look to be the most promising from all aspects are Players
Sportsbar Alakea, Pipeline Cafe, and Gussie Lamour's. Players
because they were the only and last venue to watch the UFC, Pipeline
Cafe because they probably have the best accomodations and a
huge 20 something foot screen to watch the fights, and Gussie's
because they are the originator of organized (or semi-organized,
sorry T. Jay) no holds barred fights to Hawaii.
Here's
where the help comes in. I know a lot of people with a lot of
connections read this page (or maybe you know someone who knows
someone). If you know the decision makers that would decide if
they would televise the event at these or any other location
that would hold a decent amount of people, please contact me so I can get the ball
rolling. BJ Penn's father will call the UFC President Dana White
and see if we can get a discounted rate to get things started
here.
We will all benefit from this. The location will get increased
profits from the people that will come to their bar early and
spend money, the Hawaii fans will get their NHB fix, BJ will
get the recognition that he deserves, and the UFC will realize
increased profits from yet two more locations paying for the
UFC which will be transferred in to paying the fighters better
leading to better fights for us to watch. It's a circular winner
every way. If you think, I am benefitting from this in any way
financially, think again. Maybe someone will buy me a beer at
the event, that would be the only way (In fact, if this comes
through, someone buy me a beer). I would need these contacts
almost immediately in order get the ball rolling so we can start
notifying people and start advertising ASAP. The other problem
was that the few minutes before the event, people would call
each other to let them know the event was playing. If you were
not on someone's call list, you were out of luck. Let's get together
on this because BJ's father has a lot of connections and this
would be the best way for Hawaii to get to view the UFC and possibly
Pride events live or with the rest of the American audience.
If,
by chance, you did not think it would be a good card, here's
the tentative line up (another very good one):
