Vernon
"Tiger" White Victim of Hit and Run
SPEEDY
RECOVERY TO VERNON 'TIGER' WHITE!
After
headlining the news last week about getting into UFC, Vern White
was reportedly hit by vehicle while walking on a California freeway
on November 11.
The
unknown driver fled the scene immediately but everyone was hopeful
that witnesses may have gotten enough information for the authorities
to track him down. White was struck hard enough that he was rendered
helpless at the scene. Another driver saw Vernon on the side
of the road and drove him to a nearby hospital where he underwent
almost immediate surgery.
The
"Tiger" had two breaks in his leg and as of press time
we're unsure if the "hit and run" driver has been apprehended.
Best
wishes going out to Vernon who has been on a tear the past year
and was reportedly training like a madman for a potential shot
in the UFC.

Shark
Tank Info
The
Shark Tank in California produces many fighters that have competed
in Super Brawl and Warrior's Quest. While in Hawaii, the head
instructor there, Eddie Millis gave us some information that
was pretty interesting.
Victor
Hunsaker who was probably the busiest fighter in the Shark Tank
has left apparently to open his own academy after being offered
a deal. John "The Natural" Alessio who fought Egan
Inoue was kicked out of the Shark Tank due to conflicts and "other
issues" that may not be P.C. to state here. Eddie also said
that he is going to keep fighting in K-1 which he has had success
and looks to keep bringing fighters to Hawaii. |

Shogun
Finalized Fight Card
Hawaii
Convention Center
December 15, 2001
PSE
has come together with a solid card with the confirmation that
Baret will fight Caleb Mitchell from Cesar Gracie's academy.
Mitchell has been very successful so if Baret can make the weight
of a very light 134.9 pounds and be comfortable there, it should
be a war. Baret usually fights in Shooto's 144 lb. class. We
know that he'll be ready for action come the 15th. Also after
an exciting fight in the UFC, Yves Edwards returns to Hawaii
to face UFC veteran Eugene Jackson's teammate, Doug Evans. One
of the top lightweights, Dave Velasquez returns to action against
Enson Inoue's Makoto Ishikawa from Japan. Velasquez trains out
of American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) with Frank Shamrock, Javier
Mendez, and BJ Penn and is a very well rounded fighter. Lastly,
the big man, Cabbage Correira keeps busy by taking on Andre Walker.
With a card like this, Hawaii fight fans are sure to be satified
with some great fights.

Seminar
We
survived the last day of the seminar. Coach Fraser is a great
guy and wrote an article in the Ultimate Athlete Magazine as
well our friend and sparring partner Dr. Eric Moon. The pain
continued with Chris and myself slamming each other at every
opportunity. I have to say that in about 10 years of grappling,
we both have never been this sore in our lives. We have a lot
of things to work on and it easily worth the money. I recommend
a seminar from Coach Fraser very highly.
Just added:
Chris, Coach
Fraser & Mike
Note: Mike is still dizzy from Chris' relentless clubbing as
taught by Coach Fraser. As you can see, Chris & Coach Fraser
are very happy with the results. Mike on the other hand... |
Chris practicing cross face turn over on helpless Mike. |
Coach Steve Fraser teaching a hammerlock turn over on helpless
victim. |
*For some strange reason,
I could not find a clear picture of Mike crushing me with a wrestling
technique to post. Strange isn't it?
Very easy
answer to that, Chris had the camera and destroyed the many pictures
of the gigantic lifting techniques that I was pulling off all
three days. |
2001
Brasileiro
The
National Championship of Brazil Results
The 2001 Edition
of the Brazilian National BJJ Titles (2001 Brasileiro) finals
were held this past Saturday and Sunday November 3 & 4th.
With a significant number of top fighters missing due to various
reasons. the event was still "LARGE", a testament to
the depth of fighters that the sport now has. The star of the
show was no doubt Fernando "Terere". Fernandinho not
only conquered his weight but also the Absolute division by winning
Marcio 'Pe de Pano' Cruz (230lbs) in the final by a score of
6 x 5. Terere who fights in the medium weight division (176-187
Lbs) defeated the big guys with this incredible brand of "ginga"
(flair) and technique.
The finals:
Rooster weight:
Bernardo Pitel (Nova Uniao) v Joelson Souza (Gracie Barra)
Pitel pulled
guard right away and capitalized when Joelson tried to open.
Pitel quickly took the back while standing. Joelson escaped and
the fight was once again on the ground with Joelson in Pitel's
guard. Pitel attempted some submissions from there until he got
a collar choke for the tapout.
Super-Feather:
Daniel Felipe (Nova U.) v Robson Escalera (Gracie B.)
This fight was
very tight with neither fighter doing much while standing, the
referee gave them both a (-) for lack of action. Still both fighters
stayed put doing very little until Felipe started attempting
takedowns. After a few attempts he was successful and after the
takedown, Felipe passed Robson's guard and completed a collar
choke from the side.
Feather:
Fredson Paixao (Equipe3/Gracie B.) v Reinaldo Ribeiro (Alliance)
Paixao confirmed
that he is one of the top fighters in his weight division by
adding the Brasileiro Title to his World Championship. After
submitting fighters with his patented "mao de vaca"
(cow hoof) Paixao attacked Ribeiro with the intensity of a Buldozer.
He opened up 5 points right away only to have Reinaldo get 2
back via a beautiful sweep. Reinaldo then attacked Paixao's foot
via 'toe hold' but the resilient Paixao defended well and secured
the victory and the title
Light Weight-
Marcio Feitosa (Gracie B.) v Rodrigo "Feijao" (Nova
U.)
After years
of dominating the Brasileiro, Marcio Feitosa was upset by a very
crafty 'Feijao'. Uncharacteristically Feitosa pulled guard right
away allowing 'Feijao' to work from the top until he managed
to pass Marcio's guard. Feitosa replaced half-guard and immediately
swept Rodrigo only to be swept back. The fight got back up and
Feitosa once again pulled guard but Rodrigo gained half-guard
right away. From then on a succession of attempted sweeps from
both sides until Feitosa was able to sweep and get ahead. Both
fighters were then punished for lack of action and with 30 seconds
to go Feijao managed a takedown to tie the score and then win
by advantages.
Medium Weight-
Fernando "Terere" (Alliance) v Bruno Severiano (Gracie
B.)
Terere simply
dominated the match with a sweep, guard pass and taking the back
(no pts/no hooks). Terere applied several attacks that were defended
by a game Bruno, in the end Terere wins 5 x 0 pts.
Medium-Heavy:
Givanildo Santana ( Lotus Clube) v Jefferson Moura (Gracie B.)
Moura pulled
guard and quickly secured a triangle for the submission with
1:30 min
Heavy:
Roger Coelho (Godoi/Macaco) v Fabio Leopoldo (Gracie B.)
This was a tight
fight with both athletes completing sweeps for points . Fabio
won 2x2 (pts) by advantages due to his attacks.
Super-Heavy-
Alexandre "Cafe" (Gracie B.) v Roberto Tozzi (Godoi/Macaco)
Tozzi entered
this match with a bad foot, and the fight was mostly contested
standing. Tozzi who is also a Judo BB did a takedown but Cafe
landed and jumped up (advantage Tozzi). In the end Tozzi wins
3x1 in advantages.
Over:
Marcio "Pe de Pano" (Gracie B.) v Carlos Alberto Santos
(Braz.Top team)
Pe de Pano immediately
pulled guard and started his traditional "guarda maldita"
(evil guard) in which he attacks from crazy angles with 'omoplatas',
triangles and sweeps. Everyone knows what he does but not many
can stop him. Marcio continued putting the pressure until he
got the submission via triangle.
Absolute:
Fernando "Terere" (Alliance) v Marcio "Pe de Pano"
(Gracie B.)
The fight started
with Terere pulling guard and sweeping right away but well defended
then Terere swept Marcio again and again to get 6 x 0. Pe de
Pano then started to do his brand of guard and did major attacks
to triangle and arm and then swept Terere and passed for 6 x
5. Pe de Pano was finally able to do a takedown that would give
him the win except that time had just ran out by 2 secs.
Team Results
were as follows:
1st Place -
Gracie Barra
2nd Place - Nova União
3rd Place - Alliance

The

by the 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist in Greco Roman wrestling, Steve

for the USA in the Olympics. He is a very good teacher and funny
in his presentations. He also emphasizes a street fighting type
of aggression which is making Chris and me beat the living crap
out of each other. We were sore on Friday night, even more so
tonight. One more day and we're done. Then it's days of advil
and hot baths. We were too tired and sore to post earlier. The
seminar today was from 9-4 and we had to go to a wedding so that's
the reason for the late post.

It's
Official, Two more Onzukas Coming!
In case you
can't make it out from the letter below. Chris and Patty have
confirmed that they are having twins. This will be the fourth
set of twins in our family. We are twins, we have twin nephews,
my wife Lisa has twin younger sisters, and we have cousins in
Austria on my mom's side that are twins. One other weird thing
to note was the proposed date of conception from the doctors
was September 11, 2001. Twin Towers fall and Twins are conceived.
Pretty freaky huh? No chain emails adding this fact alright?!
Aloha,
Well, Chris and I just went for an ultrasound to see our babies.
Both
babies are the same size and have a heartbeat. We are so thankful
that God made these little miracles in our life. Anyway, everything
looks good. Doctor says I am 8 weeks and 1 day, so the due date
is back to 6/18/02.
According to this doctor at Kapiolani Medical Center, he says
that it is
okay for me to go on my trip to California next week. I am so
excited. We
have been praying so hard for these little ones. We just wanna
say thank
you to everyone for their prayers. The power of God is awesome.
Anyway, that is the latest in our pregnancy.
Take care and God Bless you all,
Patty

UFC
35 Announced
Hawaii's
BJ Penn is now one step away from his dream, the UFC lightweight
championship. It has been announced that BJ will fight the current
champ, Jens "Little Evil" Pulver, for the title.
Dave
Menne is set to defend his new title at 185 lbs against BJJ black
belt, Murilo Bustamante. Many, including myself, thought that
Bustamante beat Liddell in UFC 32 (I think that was the one).
The
event will be held at Mohegan Sun is located at 1 Mohegan Sun

UFC
Welterweight Title News
The
Nevada Athletic Commission has upheld Big John's decision on
the controversial championship fight. I just spoke with the public
relations coordinator at Zuffa and he said the decision stands
and Hughes is the New Welterweight Champion of the world.
The
controversy surrounding this fight has left many questions of
what actually happened.
First,
why did Hughes not slam Carlos to start with. Some thought that
there was a rule that prohibited it. According to the rules there
is no spiking of the head, however this applies only to pile
drivers, not to submission escapes. From the reports I have gathered
is that Hughes thought that the fence would help to break the
choke and that Newton would lose leverage. This of course did
not happen.
Second,
did Big John tell Carlos that Matt was out and to let go. According
to those at ringside, Carlos is the only one who heard it. To
many watching at home it appeared that Hughes passed out and
when he fell Newton's head hit and knocked him out, as the triangle
was released Hughes got up dazed before Newton. It was not until
later that he realized he was the champ. Didn't I see that in
a movie? Yo Adrian, I did it! This will hopefully set up a rematch
between the two fighters in the near future. I hope to have Carlos'
Comments on the fight in the next day or so. Stayed tune to the
ADCC news for the latest and greatest MMA news in the world. |

Shogun
Rumors
It has come
to my attention that there has been a couple of rumors regarding
the Shogun event to be held at the Hawaii Convention Center on
December 15. One was that the event was canceled. This is NOT
true. The event is going on as planned. Two, there will not be
a cage and a ring would be substituted. First, we didn't know
that a cage was going to be used. Second, a cage will be used.
The promoter, PSE, has called me yesterday to confirm the details
of the event and to reassure me that everything is intact and
ready for action. A promotional campaign will begin shortly so
more information will be coming.
There
is also a rumor that Hawaii's Baret Yoshida may be fighting Caleb
Mitchell of Cesar Gracie's on the card. This is looking like
a very good possibility. Mitchell has been tearing it up on the
west coast so it looks to be a very exciting match. |
UFC
Controversy
If you saw
the Newton/Hughes fight, you knew that there was some controversy
with the outcome. From what I saw, it looked like Newton was
knocked out and Hughes was choked out from the triangle so it
should have been ruled a no contest. Big John awarded the victory
to Hughes because I don't think he knew that Hughes was out.
This is the first article that addresses this subject. I would
like to see the match be considered a no contest and a rematch
scheduled ASAP.
UFC 34: Hughes
- Newton FALLOUT?
A
"ROCKY II" STYLE ENDING PROMPTS A POSSIBLE COMMISSION
REVIEW OF VIDEO TAPE.
Saying "I
would pay to see that match again" is an understatement
when it comes to the talk of Carlos Newton vs. Matt Hughes.
A clear battle
of finesse and catlike agility displayed by Carlos Newton and
raw power and strength shown in the ground and pound assault
of Matt Hughes. A battle that saw tremendous suplexes and throws
by Hughes as he tried to dethrone the champs transitions and
submission attempts.
The end of the
fight is sure to have everyone in the industry talking for a
long time. Even with every match on the show being "the
fight of the night" this was one that fans seemed most intrigued
by as far as the outcome is concerned.
While nothing
is evident or clear at the moment, to say that the end of the
fight was controversial is a great understatement.
Newton stands
by his words saying that "he was out from the triangle"
and questioned the call of Big John McCarthy giving the win to
Matt Hughes after a "modified powerbomb" dropped Newton
on his head and seemingly scoring the KO by Matt Hughes.
When Newton
was KO'd it was apparent that Hughes had gone out as well and
both were unconscious. Hughes popped up as if to have a look
of "what happened" and jumped from the floor in victory
as he was awarded the decision that was to avenge the loss of
his mentor, Pat Miletich.
Depending on
which source you believe, Team Extreme claimed that Hughes was
not out but some people said Hughes admitted to going out. We
may never know!
With all the
confusion, one would think that this was be reviewed by the Nevada
State Athletic Commission. Newton was asking that the match be
reviewed and possibly ruled a no contest because he stands his
ground by saying that "Hughes was choked out and collapsed
first."
We'll anxiously
await a statement from all the parties involved but in the mean
time, can you say "REMATCH"!

BJ
Penn: No Talk, All Action
By Johnny Mendoza
BJ Penn is a
humble man and one of the nicest guys to ever enter the octagon.
But looks can be deceiving. He's the type of guy who surprises
the hell out of people. He doesn't have a very threatening look
when you see him, so in some ways, you can easily underestimate
his abilities. But when you underestimate BJ Penn, you end up
knocked out, plain and simple.
Penn is not
the type of defensive fighter we're so used to seeing. This guy
likes to push a fight and apply extreme pressure to his opponent.
He's also the type of guy who can dominate not only his own weight
class, but a weight class or two above his own. Before he was
well known in the UFC, he made a name for himself in the Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu circuit. His impressive wins in several BJJ and grappling
tournaments earned him the nickname, "The Prodigy."
If there was
ever a man for Jens Pulver to be totally aware of, almost to
the point of being paranoid, it's this focused man of only 150
pounds that takes out fighters with the skill and precision of
a machine. BJ Penn doesn't just finish, he makes sure there's
nothing left to question. You'll never watch him fight and say
to yourself, "well, the fight could have went to either
fighter." Watching BJ Penn fight is like watching Robert
DiNiro act. When DiNiro steps on the screen, the movie is his.
Once Penn steps in the ring, he owns the fight.
Penn's precision
and power seems to be enough to dethrone the king of the lightweights,
Jens Pulver. His entrance into the lightweight division has made
it one of the most exciting divisions yet.
Yet, just less
than a year ago, people believed that BJ didn't even deserve
a shot in the UFC. Because of his limited experience in full
contact matches, they felt that other fighters had "paid
their dues," and that BJ didn't have the experience or would
lose quickly.
Yet Penn slowly
built up his short but sweet record, defeating all 3 of his opponents
by strikes, 2 by knockout. In UFC 31, he defeated Joey Gilbert
with punches after the referee stopped the bout. He returned
again in UFC 32 and did the same damage, this time defeating
Din Thomas by knockout with explosive knees and punch combinations.
His 3rd victory over Caol Uno was delivered with a knockout in
just 11 seconds, his most impressive win yet. It seems that with
every fight, he just keeps getting better and better. Like an
out of control snowball that just keeps getting stronger and
bigger as it rolls along.
As Penn quickly
knocked out Caol Uno at last nights UFC, I couldn't help but
be reminded of Vitor Belfort at the beginning of his career.
Penn's lightning fast hands made me think of him as a mini-Belfort.
Jens Pulver
is no tomato can, however. He may very well turn out to be what
Couture was to Belfort. When it comes to throwing down, Jens
is not just a little evil, he's downright satanic. Jens has already
defeated Penn's teammates John Lewis and Joao Roque and could
very well dismantle Penn in the same meticulous fashion.
Penn, a man
of few words, had nothing bad to say about Jens Pulver in his
post-fight interview at UFC 34. He didn't seem to want to personalize
the fight by calling out Jens by name. Instead, he calmly and
simply stated, "I want my belt." I don't think Penn
cares much about who has the belt. You could see in his eyes
a determination and confidence that makes Penn absolutely bad-ass.
And I'm starting to become very worried for the man who is keeping
Penn from having his belt.

The
Ironheart Crown 3 'Exodus' Interviews:
Heavyweight
Division Champion Jim Theobald
Fighter Vitals:
Name: Jim Theobald Age: 24 Height: 64 Weight: 202lbs
Style: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/Kickboxing/MMA MMA/NHB Record: 83-9
Training Out Of: Zs Martial Arts/ Champion Jiu-Jitsu
Division: heavyweight, current Ironheart Crown Heavyweight Champion
Also fought in: International Fighting Championships, Extreme
Challenge, Rings of Fire, Chicago Challenge, Total Combat and
others
Thoughts on
opponent Steve Lauretto
I know hes
1-0 and fought one of Dave Strassers guys. Someone is getting
me the tape. I know he pretty much ran out there, punched the
guy in the face and choked him out. Hes big and strong.
Everybody keeps telling me hes a good boxer. I know hes
no Oscar Bravo or we all wouldve heard about him.
Thoughts on
the outcome
I think hes
supposed to be pretty tough but I dont think hes
that smart of a fighter.
I just see him
coming and throwing punches at me. The harder he throws, the
quicker Im going to take him down and submit him. Keith
Hackney has been trying to beat me for the last 30 years (laughs)!
He throws everybody at me. Its always the same thing; theyre
either really good strikers but when taken down, they cant
defend or theyre really good grapplers but they cant
strike. They hes been really training his ground game but
what is 6 months going to do against 6 years? Im just hoping
it will be a good fight.
The last fight
with Jeremy Horn
I felt pretty
good. I had a different game plan for that one. The elbows threw
me off. I was told no elbows before the fight. I found out they
were allowed before the fight and I didnt really train
for them. Not to say the outcome wouldve been different
if there were no elbows allowed but I wouldnt have gotten
hit as much. I think it wouldve been more of a chess match
as opposed to me getting elbowed in the face (laughs).
Training
Im training
a couple days a week in Carpentersville with Assou Hamdaoui and
a couple days a week with Tommy Bok. Im helping him get
ready for his fight too. He and my wife Lois both have fights
in Minnesota on the same night I do. Tommy is fighting for the
World Kickboxing Title. Im working his cardio, running
sprints, everything. I was hoping my wife was going to fight
on the under card at the Ironheart but we couldnt get her
a fight.
His advantage
Experience.
Ive got more experience than most people in this event
put together. I feel my strongest point is my ring generalship,
just going out there and being in general control and the pace
of the fight. I formulate good strategies and I stick to them.
Its how Ive won most of my fights against very tough
people. Sometimes I may be losing the fight for the first couple
minutes but Im usually able to turn them around. The truth
is Im bad, Im lazy and Im not doing a thing.
Im watching my kids grow up and Im not training at
all (laughs).
About all those
fights
You mean the
fights that I can confirm? Im not sure. Im 83-9 that
I know of but thats everything; Pancrase style, no striking
on the ground, closed fists and elbows, and lots of tournaments
too. My brother comes to record them. I know sometimes Ive
forgotten about a fight until someone shows them to me on tape.
I have more then 70 of them and Im trying to get them all
on one tape
or a few tapes. I dont have the ISFA tournaments
and the Bart Vale stuff I did. Some of them I laugh at now. I
used to fight in a Gi.
Favorite line
(right now)
You couldnt
kick half my ass if the other half was helping you.
Jim, in very
good spirits when we spoke, was also quoting professional wrestler
"The Rock", telling me he would give Steve "The
Peoples Eyebrow"
whatever that means.

Caique
Charity Tournament
Caique Academy is hosting
a charity Jiu jitsu Tournament on Sunday December 2, 2001 in
Alexandria, VA (right outside of Washington DC). Each year Caique
has held a charity event to help children. This year he will
support the Crimestoppers Youth Programs. This program developed
by the Alexandria, VA police department is designed to help get
kids involved in sports and keep them off the streets.
The Fighters Garage, the Virginia based Caique Training Association,
has sponsored this group in the past and is delighted to report
that all the money raised went directly to support the program.
Last June the jiu jitsu community sent 12 kids went to wrestling
camp with the money raised!
Information (rules, registration, weights etc) will be posted
on www.fightersgarage.com after November 1st. Participants
may register on-line or at the weigh-in (the day before the tournament).
There will be no at the door registration.
Caique will also be teaching a series of classes Friday night
and Saturday before the tournament. Interested participants may
contact the Fighters Garage for details and to reserve their
spaces. Medals will be awarded to the winners and the first 150
registered will also get a free competition tee shirt.
The Caique Academy and The Fighters Garage are committed to supporting
women in the sport of Jiu Jitsu. We know how discouraging it
is to train hard for a tournament only to show up and learn there
are no other female competitors. In order to promote women competition,
we would like to announce a $100 prize for both the winner of
the White Belt and Blue Belt Open in the women's division at
our upcoming charity tournament.
This Tournament is being held on Sunday December 2, 2001 in Alexandria,
VA (Near Washington DC). It is to benefit CrimeStoppers Youth
Programs in the city of Alexandria VA. More information may be
found at both Caique's web page www.caiquejiujitsu.com and the Fighters Garage web page
www.fightersgarage.com. We look forward to the very technical
aspects that women bring to the sport!
See You There!!!

UFC
34: High Voltage Results
MGM Grand,
Las Vegas, NV
November 2, 2001
Frank Mir def. Roberto Traven: Tap out due to armbar at 1:05min
in round 1
This ain't BJJ or
Sub Grappling, this is NHB. That's why a purple belt with a 35lbs
weight advantage, but more importantly very good hands, can arm
bar a BJJ black belt and Abu Dhabi Absolute Champ.
Matt Lindland def. Phil Baroni
Majority decision after 3 rounds
Lindland took it
to Baroni, but Baroni showed a lot of heart and stunned Lindland
a couple times. After watching the tape, Lindland had to be thinking,
"note to self, DO NOT kick in NHB fight."
Evan Tanner def. Homer Moore
Tap out due to arm bar at 0:55 seconds of round 2
Tanner comes back
in impressive fashion. Moore did a good job of stripping Tanner
of his most effective weapon, his knees. Moore would catch the
first or second knee and take Tanner down. Moore must have forgot
that Tanner has a nice arm bar from the guard.
Josh Barnett def. Bobby Hoffman
Tap out due to punches, 4:25 R2
Hoffman looked reserved,
not the animal he is normally. Barnett always looks impressive
and this was no exception. If you want to learn how to effectively
strike from the ground, check out Josh. He has some sweet setups.
If Barnett doesn't fight Couture next, Rodrigues-Barnett would
be a barn burner.
BJ Penn def. Caol Uno
KO due to punches, 0:11 R1
Uno does a leaping
kick that misses. Penn connects with a left and a right that
knock's Uno out, pushes him down and unloads until the ref stops
it. That was every detail in the fight. This was the most anticipated
match and ended the quickest. BJ's kicking ass and he better
hire someone to take names. And that person better be a fast
typist too. I think Pulver can stand with Penn, but after the
Hallman fight, Penn always has the option to submit him. I see
the future...and BJ Penn will be the UFC Lightweight Champ.
Ricco Rodriguez def. Pete Williams
Ref stoppage due to punches, 4:02 R2
Ricco looked impressive
and basically took it to Williams. Williams didn't stand a chance.
Pretty impressive.
UFC Middleweight Championship Match:
Matt Hughes def. Carlos Newton
KO due to slam while inside triangle at 1:27 minutes of round
2.
Newton gets Hughes
in triangle. Hughes picked up Newton and slammed him to the ground,
knocking the bootilicious Newton out (you had to see Newton's
intro). Hughes passed out momentarily from triangle right after
slam and had to be told that he won by Jeremy Horn. Hughes revenges
Miletich's loss and becomes new champ.
UFC Heavyweight Championship Match:
Randy Couture def. Pedro Rizzo
Ref stoppage due to punches in 1:38 minutes of round 3.
Couture retains
belt in convincing fashion. Rizzo looked reserved and unmotivated.
Grappling boys out there (myself included), we got to study Couture's
style. It works!

SuperBrawl XXII: United We Stand
Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii
November 3, 2001
By Chris Onzuka - Chris@Onzuka.com
[Daddy
like, daddy like...growl! Oh and Egan & his belt are nice
too]
I am not sure if it was the "United We Stand" title
or fighters on the card that brought out the crowd, but Las Vegas
was definitely not the only place rocking. While the UFC was
being held in Las Vegas, the Blaisdell Arena was rumbling back
in Hawaii with a sizable crowd on hand. The night was filled
with great fights. In just about every fight the tide turned
at least a couple times as to which fighter was in control of
the match. Not one of the matches would go to a decision and
referees; Haru Shiminishi and Steve English would be working
hard on every one of the contests. A couple of the fights that
stood out had to be the war between Eddie Yagin and Ryan Diaz.
Diaz had Yagin in trouble early and almost finished the fight,
but Yagin showed a ton of heart and came back and KO'd Diaz laying
him out for a while. The women also came to fight. Beta Yeung
showed that going back to the gym and focusing on her unsuccessful
debut really paid off when she arm barred Sarah Finaseth in under
30 seconds, causing the crowd to go into a frenzy. And last,
but not least, Egan Inoue took apart Joe Doerkson in impressive
fashion. Inoue wanted to prove that not only should he be in
the middleweight top 10 rankings, but he should be the next one
in line to challenge the newly crowned, Dave Menne for his UFC
middleweight championship belt. Only time will tell, but T. Jay
Thompson's Super Brawl has always been a hotbed for new talent
that makes it to the UFC. In fact, UFC 34's fight card consisted
of five fighters that were featured in Super Brawl at one time
or another. I hear that Thompson has a contact by the name of
Tommy Dakota that can get people noticed
[sorry, inside

John "The Saint" Renken vs. Falaniko

Betta Yeung vs. Sarah Finaseth |
The weigh-ins
were held at its normal home, 24 Hour Fitness, at 11:00 am today.
The card stayed intact and we have not heard of any last minute
changes which is a a change in itself in the fight game. Everyone
seems to be happy, healthy, and ready to put on a good show for
the Hawaii fans. MMA veterans Lance Gibson was present to support
Ryan Diaz and Enson Inoue was there to support his older brother
Egan. Also in attendance was Shark Tank leader, Eddie Millis
to corner his pocket dynamite, Jose Lopez who is facing local
fighter Lincoln Tyler. For three of the fighters, this will be
their debut fight and leaves the fight fans guessing as to what
they will bring to the ring tomorrow night at Neil Blaisdell
Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Of these three fighters, the one that has been generating the
most talk by far is the monster from Ewa (pronounced Eva) Beach
and semi-main event fighter, Miles Tynanes. Tynanes is known
as a heavy hitter by the locals in a tough area of Oahu. He trains
out of Marcelo Tigre's gym so his animal instincts are probably
being well encouraged and enhanced. During the interview session
of the press conference, Tynanes did not seem to respect Cabbage
Correira's punching power, nor his grappling ability. He claims
to be comfortable in all positions, both on the ground and standing.
Cabbage is a man of hard left hooks, but little words and just
encouraged everyone to be there to see two big guys throwing
some big punches and to watch a great fight.
With the expansion of mixed martial arts, it is only a matter
of time before we see more women competing. This card includes
a special rematch of local fighter, Betta Yeung trained by HMC
instructor Haru Shimanishi trying to avenge her debut loss against
Shimanishi's partner Matt Hume's (of AMC) Sarah "The Finisher"
Finaseth. The fans are in for a treat because both women look
fit and mean (kind of the same face I get when I deny shopping
to my wife and believe me, that's mean!).
Local favorite and University of Hawaii football standout, Falaniko
Vitale returns to the ring at a lighter weight of 190 lbs against
the veteran, John "The Saint" Renken. The fight was
originally set at 185 lbs, but both fighters exceeded the weight
limit and a newly constructed weight was agreed upon. Vitale
looks ready for the big time and Renken may just be a stepping
stone until Vitale gets his hands on a ranked opponent. "The
Saint" will utilize his experience and try to upset the
local fighter and show him that he is not ready for huge fights,
not just yet.
Hawaii's Egan Inoue has his eyes set for a birth in the UFC,
but he first has to beat some ranked fighters to prove to Zuffa
that he is UFC material. Canada's Joe Doerkson brings a 19-2
record, most if not all by submission, to Hawaii to try to push
Egan aside and enter the Octagon himself. This could be a make
or break fight for both fighters. Super Brawl has a very extensive
history of catapulting fighters to the highest level of competition
such as Vitor Belfort, Heath Herring, Rico Rodriguez, Josh Barnet,
Bobby Hoffman, to name a few and these two could be the next.
With Inoue being a two-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion
and submission grappling medalist, Doerkson's submission based
fight game will be put to the test, but they don't hand out number
10 rankings if he cannot handle himself. This fight looks to
be a technical ground battle, but it may be determined by the
fighter that dominates the stand up part of the game.
A couple high intensity and fast paced light weight matches featuring
some exciting fighters will lead the way to the four fights previewed
above. The card looks solid enough to pull fans away from pay-per-view
and the UFC on the same night to see some live action. With the
fighters weighed in and the cards confirmed, each fighter will
try to steal the limelight of the fight hungry Hawaii fans. The
fans here are getting educated about MMA extremely fast and will
see a good mix of good old fashion brawling and a lot of technique.
With the recent addition of local television replays of the event,
Super Brawl is expected to grow in attendance and spread MMA
to a wider fan base.

Egan
Inoue and Cabbage Correira was featured in an short segment on
I94 FM this morning. Rory Wilde and Gregg Hammer have always
been interested in mixed martial arts events and also give some
press to the events which helps get the word out and exposes
many people who would never have exposure to MMA.
Super
Brawl 21 will be played again tonight on KFive (Channel 5) at
midnight. |
