United We Stand!
SuperBrawl XXII

1. 155lbs 2x5 minute rounds

Kaika Tiger 155lbs v Jay R. Palmer 155lbs

(Team Tiger ) 0-0 (Freelance) 20-12

Kaika making his pro dubut, is taking the name of his teacher, Marcelo Tiger. He has strong Jiu-Jitsu and Tiger in his corner. Jay R. is no pushover for even a seasoned veteran. Look for Palmer to take the fight to the rookie early. Palmer 2-1 favorite

2. 170lbs 2x5 minute rounds

Deshaun Johnson170lbs v Kolo Koka 170lbs

(HMC) 0-0 (Grappling Unlimited) 1-1

Both fighters favor the striking game and have limited ground. So don’t look for this fight to go to the ground unless someone is in trouble. Pick’em Even Odds

3. 145lbs 3x5 minute rounds

Ryan Diaz 145lbs v Eddie Yagin 145lbs

(Gibson Pankration/AMC, Seattle) 8-3 (Grappling Unlimited) 3-0

This could be a beauty! Diaz is a tremendously skilled submission fighter with wins all over the world. He is equally versed standing and on the ground. Yagin may not have the experience, or even the skill of Diaz…but he is ultra-aggressive and has one of the biggest hearts in the game. Win or lose, look for Yagin to push the fight from start to finish and Diaz to counter. Diaz 2-1 favorite

4. 135lbs 3x5 minute rounds

Jose Lopez 140lbs v Lincoln Tyler 140lbs

(Shark Tank) 2-0-1 (Freelance) 5-1

Lopez fought to a draw with Gary “Boy” Freitas earlier this year. He displayed tremendous striking skills against the much larger Freitas. Tyler is known for his submissions from the bottom, but claims he has been working on his takedown and top game as of late. If Lincoln cannot take down Lopez, he may find himself staring at the ceiling. But if he gets it to the ground it should be a short night for Lopez. Lopez 3-2 favorite

5. Special Female Match 120lbs 2x5 minute rounds

Sarah “The Finisher” Finaseth v Beta Yeung 120lbs

(AMC) Seattle 4-0 (HMC) 0-1

Finaseth and Yeung are no strangers. They faced each other earlier this year in Washington. “The Finisher” finished Yeung. But many in attendance say it was a bad stoppage. Yeung is motivated, training hard and has the hometown crowd. Pick’em Even Odds

6. 185lbs 3x5 minute rounds

John “The Saint” Renken 185lbs v Falaniko Vitale 185lbs

(Nashville, TN) 16-7-3 (Grappling Unlimited) 8-1

The veteran Renken has fought all over the world and faced top name competition. Vitale was strong as a 200lb fighter. At this lighter weight he could be a monster! He has spent more time in the gym to make this new weight. Many predict big things for the newly invigorated Vitale. Will this just be a “tune-up” for Vitale? John Renken hopes not. Vitale 2-1 Favorite

7. 265lbs+ 3x5 minute rounds

Miles Tynanes 285lbs v Wes “Cabbage” Correira 275lbs

(Team Tiger) 0-0 (Grappling Unlimited) 7-3

These big boys will bang! “Cabbage”, fresh of his upset victory over Marcelo Tiger is looking to further his career with another “W”. Tynanes is known around town as a “heavy hitter”. He will have to hit very heavy to take out “Cabbage”. Look for Pynanis to start strong and throw lots of leather. “Cabbage” plans on weathering the storm and counter with bombs of his own. “Cabbage” 2-1 Favorite.

8. Super Brawl Middleweight Championship 3x5 minute rounds

Joe Doerksen 185lbs v Egan Inoue 185lbs

(Team Extreme) 19-2 (Grappling Unlimited) 11-3

Doerksen is ranked #10 in the world by the MMA Writers Association and has finished all 19 of his victims by submission, but none with the talents of Inoue, who has finished in the top 4 in submission grappling World Championships twice and won 2 World titles in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This will be a true test for Doerksen's submission abilities. Both fighters have voiced interest in fighting in the UFC middleweight class. The winner will likely get the call…the loser will have to watch on Pay-Per-View. Doerksen 3-2 Favorite

Corleta Leaves Today

World Champion, Marcio Corleta reviewed Monday's seminar fairly fast and added some new sit up guard material as well as showed some ideas on making your pass more effective. It was worth the money in my opinion and he is very detail oriented in many of the little things that he does. His game also fits very well with Relson's game which made it even more inviting. He said that he may come back in February for another trip.

Corleta Seminar is on again tonight!

World Champion, Marcio Corleta wowed the crowd with some killer stuff last night. He started off a bit slow, but turned it up with some unreal guard techniques. The best thing is that he plays very closely to the style that Relson preaches which is the best thing. At the end, he gave us a preview of what we can expect tomorrow and everyone better be ready. Call the academy at 589-2524 to sign up for the academy. It is definitely worth the money and believe me, I just got burned and you will really get techniques for your dollar.

Hawaii's Ron Jhun Short Interview

Jesus is Lord's Ron Jhun has been making some major waves in the NHB world and have been running over the competition. He gets a shot to headline John Lewis' WFA event in Las Vegas. If he wins against UFC veteran Jermaine Andre, this may lead in to a birth in the UFC and big pay days for this religious and technical fighter. He is featured in a short interview on the Abu Dhabi page.

Ironheart Crown Update

IRONHEART CROWN LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE BOUT HEATS UP!

HAMMOND, IN – For the past few weeks, Chicago and northwest Indiana fight fans have been on the edge of their seat, eagerly awaiting the upcoming lightweight title bout between current champion Henry Matamoros and the challenger, Rolando Higuerros. This exciting match had been one of the event’s highlights, driving ticket sales and inciting a buzz among the local martial arts community.

Then, a promoter’s worst nightmare unfolded as an old knee injury put Higuerros out of action, taking some of the punch out of what had been a great line up. “That fight was one of the best matches ever slated in Chicago,” former IHC promoter Eric Moon remarks. “It was the fight that I was personally anticipating the most, and I’m sure that a lot of the fans were looking forward to it as well. I was crushed when I heard of Rolando’s injury. Thank God Shannon called.”

Shannon? Shannon “The Cannon” Ritch? Against Henry Matamoros? It may sound too good to be true, but just days after the show’s best match-up turned cold, it has been re-ignited, burning even hotter than before! Shannon Ritch, training out of Buell Fighting Systems in Coolidge, Arizona is the current Internation Sport Combat Federation U.S. Champion with a mixed martial arts fighting record of 53 wins and 22 losses. He has been featured in Japan’s Pride, Hawaii’s SuperBrawl, Holland’s MixFight, and other major events including the Extreme Challenge and the King of the Cage. He has faced the best world-class A-level fighters in the business, including Kazushi Sakuraba, Frank Shamrock, and Dennis Hallman. While Rolando Higuerros was a worthy opponent for Henry Matamoros, Shannon the Cannon brings much more to the table, adding to the aura of this upcoming event.

But is Shannon Ritch more than Matamoros can handle?

“I don’t think so,” Moon says. “Shannon has a lot more experience, but Matamoros is no novice. Henry has a record of 27 wins and only 5 losses. He has also fought in big shows and faced notable opponents, and he has maintained an incredibly good record in the process. I think Shannon is a much stronger striker, but Henry has a supernatural ability to take a punch, and his submission skills are as good as they get. It won’t be easy for him, but Henry definitely has the tools to win this fight and keep his title. It’s a great opportunity for him to get his name out. He really hasn’t gotten the recognition that he deserves.”

Obviously, Eric Moon thinks this is a good match, and for whatever its worth, the internet community seems to be in agreement. Just hours after the deal was made, an unknown source posted the information on the “Underground Forum” at mixedmartialarts.com, the internet’s hottest source for mixed martial arts information. In response to the thread, half of the posts predicted a win for Mataomoros, while the other half predicted that Ritch would be victorious. Opinions are divided, but the overall consensus seems to be that it will either be Matamoros by submission, or the Cannon by knockout. All agreed that it would be a great fight.

“People can say what they want on the forums,” Moon says, “but the outcome will be determined in the ring by these two great fighters. I can’t believe that this fight just fell into our laps. Its going to be awesome!”

Matamoros and Ritch will be featured in one of four title bouts at the Ironheart Crown. The show will be held on Saturday, November 10 at the Hammond Civic Center in Hammond, Indiana. The doors open at 6:00 PM, and fights will begin at 7:00. Tickets are on sale now, and a limited number of ringside seats are available. For more information, call 773-793-6555 in Chicago or 219-844-8504 in northwest Indiana. Information is also available on the event website at www.ironheartcrown.com

Late Breaking: Pancrase Official Statement

The Pancrase Organization has released a statement regarding Marcelo Tigre's "eye gouge" in his Pancrase fight against Takahashi. Tigre states that it was accidental, but the officials have decided that it was not and have stated that the seven cameras that was used for the event indicates clear intent to eye gouge. Another interesting note is that Tigre's surname is Dantas. The Brazilians have a bunch of last names and nicknames so many times people never know what the legal name of a person is. Sometimes they go by the mother's maiden name, sometimes the father's, sometimes the maternal grandfather's, whomever holds the most clout. If Marcelo keeps this up, he is going to run out of organizations to fight for.

Official statement regarding Marcelo "Tiger" Dantas
by Pancrase Organization.

World Pancrase Create, Inc. and King of Pancrase Committee (herein after called collectively as Pancrase Organization) has concluded regarding the disqualification of Marcelo "Tiger" Dantas due to the foul under *the Pancrase official rules of Part 9, Article 22, for the match with Yoshiki Takahashi held at Yokohama Culture Gymnasium in Japan on September 30, 2001 as follows:

Pancrase Organization declares that it expels
Marcelo "Tiger" Dantas from any future
competitions and events promoted by Pancrase
Organization.

Explanation.

1) We, Pancrase Organization, held an investigation on October 1st, the day after the match, by reviewing video footage taped professionally for broadcasting. There were a total of seven cameras and we found that three of them captured the moment of Mr. Dantas's foul action clearly. Throughout the match, Mr. Dantas executed action which we recognize as eye gouging twice. First he used an index finger and middle finger, and a thumb for the second time. This video footage will be sent to Mr. Dantas as evidence.

After the fight, Mr. Dantas insisted that his finger slipped and got into Mr. Takahashi's eye accidentally. However, in the investigation by King of Pancrase Committee and official judges, they all concluded that it was impossible to consider the action as an accident as Mr. Dantas describes from the video footage. They remarked that the action continued too long for an accident. Especially, the first eye gouging went on for six seconds and Mr. Dantas finally stopped because the referee stopped him by holding his hand. For the second time, Mr. Dantas continued the same action for a few seconds until Mr. Takahashi screamed from the pain. It proved that Mr. Dantas did not have any intention to stop such action unless he was stopped.

Mr. Takahashi diagnosed by doctors that he had contusion of the eyeball and it caused visual impairment, conjunctivitis and anterior chamber hemorrhage. It would take three weeks to gain the complete recovery. It proves that the foul to Mr. Takahashi actually happened and that it was not made up by Mr. Takahashi.

5. Under *Pancrase Official Rules, Part 7, article 15, competitors are allowed to appeal to Pancrase regarding judgment. We received a claim letter regarding the judgment from Mr. Dantas' representative, Mr. Miki from Hawaii dated October 16th. According to the letter, there was only one reason why they claim it was not a flagrant foul, and that was that they did not
find footage which showed the moment of the incident in their personal video. The shooting of a personal video is against our regulation, and in addition it is not fair to judge such a sensitive issue with a home video shot from the bleachers.

Based on the above, we concluded that the eye gouging actually happened and executed with intention. Therefore Pancrase Organization came to the decision and announced on October 22nd that under Pancrase Official Rules, *Part 9, Article 22, Mr. Dantas is expelled from any future competitions and events promoted by Pancrase Organization.

(On October 5th, we held a press conference and showed the video footage and explained to the press what happened during the match between Mr. Dantas and Mr. Takahashi. However, we did not conclude any final decision before we received any feedback from Mr. Dantas because we respected the rule to give him a chance to appeal.)

Pancrase was established in 1993 and has focused on keeping fair-play as a professional sports competition. This is a very important policy for us. As a sports event promoter, we should do our best to provide competitors the environment that they can compete safely. We cannot tolerate any fouls with intention which not only might harm the health and careers of competitors, but also it might damage the rest of their life. It is our responsibility to recognize any wrong doing.

Masami Ozaki
President
World Pancrase Create, Inc.

Congratulations to Brennan and Edwina

Warrior's Quest promoter, Brennan and his organizational mastermind wife, Edwina Kamaka have just been blessed with their first child, a beautiful baby girl last night named Janie Kaukalani Kamaka. Their daughter is about 6 lbs and both mother and daughter are happy and healthy. As you can imagine, Brennan is on cloud 9. As everyone probably knows, the Jesus is Lord team is way to low on kids from their fighters (heh heh) and needed another addition. I am sure that all the baby's cousins are looking forward to playing with the new member of the family. Congratulations to both!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October, 24th 2001

ORGANIZATIONS TEAM UP TO BRING WORLD CLASS MIXED MARTIAL ARTS COMPETITION TO HAWAII.

Honolulu, HI - On December 15th 2001, Pacific Sports Entertainment (PSE) and the newly formed United Shoot Association (USA) in conjunction with the International Fighting Championships (IFC), will light up the State of Hawaii with the event of the year, "SHOGUN" at the Honolulu Convention Center.

"SHOGUN" will be a night of tremendous excitement as some of the world's top mixed martial arts fighters battle in a cage. This will mark the first for Hawaii to have a cage used in a Hawaiian mixed martial arts event. No strangers to the ring, Hawaii's own, Egan Inoue, will be headlining the night in a bout against Dennis Hallman, who will be moving up in weight in an EXPLOSIVE match! Both men are Pride and UFC veterans, respectively.

In addition, there will be a tribute to Brian Johnston during the event. Johnston, a professional mixed martial arts veteran and coach, was planning a comeback in the sport, but recently suffered an unfortunate stroke. Brian Johnston merchandise will be sold at the event to aid his recovery fund.

In addition to the world-class talent in the ring, other confirmed notable MMA fighters/trainers who will be in attendance to support are: Jens Pulver, Pat Miletich, Frank Shamrock, B.J. Penn, Chuck Liddell, Enson Inoue, Frank Mir, Cesar Gracie, Eugene Jackson, Gil Castillo, "Crazy" Bob Cook, and Javier Mendez. Event Organizer/Promoters that will be in attendance are Joe Silva and Dana White of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Jeff Osborne of Hook-n-Shoot, T. Finaseth and Yeung are no strangers. They faced each other earlier this year in Washington. “The Finisher” finished Yeung. But many in attendance say it was a bad stoppage. Yeung is motivated, training hard and has the hometown crowd.

6. 185lbs 3x5 minute rounds

John “The Saint” Renken 185lbs

 vs

Falaniko Vitale 185lbs

(Nashville, TN) 16-7-3

(Grappling Unlimited) 8-1

The veteran Renken has fought all over the world and faced top name competition. Vitale was strong as a 200lb fighter. At this lighter weight he could be a monster! He has spent more time in the gym to make this new weight. Many predict big things for the newly invigorated Vitale. Will this just be a “tune-up” for Vitale? John Renken hopes not.
Vitale 2-1 Favorite

7. 265lbs+ 3x5 minute rounds

Miles Tynanes 285lbs

 vs

Wes “Cabbage” Coreirra 275lbs

(Team Tiger) 0-0

(Grappling Unlimited) 7-3

These big boys will bang! “Cabbage”, fresh of his upset victory over Marcelo Tiger is looking to further his career with another “W”. Tynanes is known around town as a “heavy hitter”. He will have to hit very heavy to take out “Cabbage”. Look for Pynanis to start strong and throw lots of leather. “Cabbage” plans on weathering the storm and counter with bombs of his own.

8. Super Brawl Middleweight Championship 3x5 minute rounds

Joe Doerksen 185lbs

 vs

Egan Inoue 185lbs

(Team Extreme) 19-2

(Grappling Unlimited) 11-3

Doerksen is ranked #10 in the world by the MMA Writers Association and has finished all 19 of his victims by submission, but none with the talents of Inoue, who has finished in the top 4 in submission grappling World Championships twice and won 2 World titles in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This will be a true test for Doerksen's submission abilities. Both fighters have voiced interest in fighting in the UFC middleweight class. The winner will likely get the call…the loser will have to watch on Pay-Per-View.

We find out in a couple of weeks for sure. Say a few prayers for us that everything is okay in there.

I added a few more pictures and lowered the resolution, so the pictures download faster. I also corrected some of the terrible grammar that Mike posted and added a few of my own insights below to our original posts (hey, I was writing most of this stuff on the plane ride home, I was tired ~Mike).

Every one of the Gracie Hawaii Team wants to send out a huge THANK YOU to Joel S. who opened up his house to a bunch of strangers and made us feel at home. He made sure that we were fed, warm, found our way back to his house, and most importantly, well entertained! He also found out what happens when someone turns down our gesture of good faith. "Sumo Squat!, Sumo Squat!" I can assure you that Joel will NOT make that mistake again. Heh heh. We owe you big time Joel!

Ryan's girlfriend, Leigh, has also been training with us when she is in Hawaii with Ryan and she has been ranked number 8 in her weight class. Congratulations to her, her family, and the Cabinians. Also, look which school sneaked in as number 10. Go Warriors!

Ironheart Crown Press Release

For Immediate Release:
HEAVYWEIGHT SHOWDOWN AT THE IRONHEART CROWN!

HAMMOND, IN -- Jim Theobald grew up on a farm in Wheeling, Illinois, helping his family grow green beans to sell at the local markets. He was a successful wrestler in highschool, and in 1995 he began his training in the martial arts. While in college, he began a successful career of mixed martial arts fighting. Now, six years later, he has over sixty fights to his name with very few losses. He has fought across the United States and around the world. In the last two years his only defeat has come at the hands of Jeremy Horn, a champion on several of the world's biggest fighting circuits. He currently holds two heavyweight titles in Denver's Ring of Fire, and in the Midwest's Ironheart Crown. On November 10th this year, he plans on defending one of his belts at Ironheart Crown III in Hammond, Indiana. His opponent? Steve Lauretto, a Chicago cop who was once a successful collegiate boxer. Lauretto has also spent the past four years adding aspects of the mixed martial arts to his training regimen. Under the tutelage of Keith Hackney, he has learned to adapt his boxing skills to the no-holds-barred arena. Through his training with Eddie Yoshimura of the Chicago fitness center, he has learned to execute powerful Shidokan kicks. And under the guidance of UFC and Shooto veterans Joey and Danny Gilbert, he has mastered the art of submission grappling. The product of these endeavors: a powerful striker with solid ground skills. While relatively new to the ring of MMA competition, Lauretto’s only defeat was a controversial decision in which he scored three knockdowns on his opponent. He is definitely a force to be reckoned with, but is he ready for the challenge which lies ahead? Keith Hackney thinks so. "He's definitely ready,” Hackney says. “Theobald has more experience, but Steve is the millennium’s new breed of fighter. He is extremely well rounded. Good on his feet, and good on the ground. He’s in great shape, and he definitely has a great chance of beating Jim. It’s going to be a great fight, but I think we might be taking home that belt.” Theobald's thoughts on his opponent? "I hear he's pretty tough. I know he’s powerful and he has great hands, but I've been fighting for years and I’ve beaten a lot of really good fighters. I know Steve has several strong coaches, and he’s working with a really good group of guys, but I'm just gonna keep training like I always do. I have good guys in my corner too, and I'm pretty confident that I'll be keeping my title." Theobald and Lauretto will be featured in one of four title bouts on a card with fourteen scheduled fights. Tickets are on sale now, and a limited number of ringside seats are available. For more information, call 219-844-8504 in northwest Indiana or 773-793-6555 in Chicago. Our Last Day in Columbus

As you have probaby noticed, we have not been updating the page like we normally do. I was having trouble logging in at Joel's after I did it that first time. Hopefully, I have this problem fixed by the time I get home and you will all probably get to read this tonight. I went back and summarized the trip on a day to day basis as if I could post each day's events. Hopefully, I'll get the results from the tournament tonight or tomorrow and I will post that as well.

Our trip has finally come to an end. The BBQ continued all night and we finally got Relson, Pe de Pano, and Cabelinho to go home at about 3 or 4 am. We cleaned up Joel's house so, although he didn't want to tell us where his vacuum cleaner was, and did our final packing.

Todd was the first scheduled to leave at 7:30 am on Monday, which meant that we had to drop him off at 5:30 am. As luck would have it, we took the wrong way to the airport, luckily didn't lose much time. Since our plane was leaving at 10:40 am, we decided to bring our stuff and just eat a breakfast of champions at a McDonalds near the airport. Staying near the airport was the best decision, besides staying at Joel's house, that we made for the entire trip. Todd called from the airport and said that there was a huge line for tickets and to get through the security check. We dropped off Malc, Neal, and Brian and paid a skycap to check our bags in, while Chris and I returned our van. We got in a huge line and waited a long time to finally get to the security gate,

Malcolm's face summarizes our mood.
only to find out that we were in the wrong line to the wrong concourse of the airport. We were deliriously tired by this point and only could laugh while we walked by and checked in at Delta (no line there) and went to our correct concourse (no line there either).

Again, Malcolm with arms raised & no line at the right concourse.
We bumped into Relson at the airport because he happened to be on the same flight and talked to him a bit before we all caught our plane to Cincinnati. We parted ways with Relson in Cincinnati where he continued on to Los Angeles and we went to San Fran. We took a nap on the floor at the gate and left.

Our flight took us from Columbus to Cincinnati, to San Fran, to Honolulu. There was a little scare as the flight crew paged someone named Popeye. They stated that his bag was on the airplane, but he had not checked in. After three pages, they announced, "Can a Winston Churchill Popeye please report to the front of the plane?" It sounds like a joke, but it wasn't. The airlines (Delta) took off that person's bags and I assume they checked them out. We could have been in the news right there because that sounds like a potential terrorist or copy cat incident. I leaned over to the guy across the aisle and asked if there were any other states men and cartoon characters on board.

After a bumpy San Fran to Honolulu trip, we landed safe and sound back home. I think we all were glad that we were finally home to sleep in our own beds and see our women again, bearing gifts of course. The only bad thing is it's finally time to go back to work and get back in shape. While in Columbus, we downed large Dairy Queen chocolate dipped cones like it was nobody's business. The cones are huge there and you definitely get your money's worth.

One last thing, on our first trip to Dairy Queen, Neal tapped out to a cone after eating only two levels so he was deemed a Dairy Queen white belt. Later on the trip, he trained very hard and could actually finish the whole thing while still putting on a realistic look on his face and saying that he wanted another one (liar, big liar), so we promoted him to Dairy Queen blue belt. Congratulations Neal!

The Day After

After surviving a tiring tournament and an even more tiring night of celebration, we finally got to sleep in on Sunday and went to a mall to try to do some shopping or risk the wrath when we all get back. After we got through shopping at Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works (yeah real tough Jiu-Jitsu guys right, believe me, we did the right thing, besides we got busted by the Victoria Secret's workers for videotaping, I'm serious), we bought some steaks and beer and went back to Joel's for a BBQ. We brought our bags from the hotel back to our second home, Casa do Joel, and in case you wondered about the sleeping arrangements, see below.

As you can see, Todd and Brian are out, Malcolm's hanging on to consciousness by a thread, and I have no idea what Neal is doing?

We invited Relson, Pe de Pano, Cabalinho (the wild man/dancing machine), and some of the Ohio team to Joel's house. Fredson and Tita (pronounced Chita) were already staying at Joel's house. Todd was wowing the Brazilians with his magic tricks which included many card tricks and the incredible levitating trick. Todd is available for birthday parties, graduations, and weddings. I think the Brazilians are booking him right now because they were going absolutely crazy over the tricks.

Hanging out in Joel's basement. Front row: Mei & Mike
On the couch from left to right: Joel, Cabelinho, Pe de Pano, Ericka, Relson, Tita, Fredson and Todd (aka TT Boy)
Standing in back: Unknown, Ray, unknkown, Phil, Brian, Malc, Neal, Chris

We leave tomorrow morning for home, but before we leave Brian and I planned to kick some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt asses in foolsball downstairs since we can't kick their ass any other way.

In the end, we didn't get to play the Brazilans, but won two games against Joel and a "friend." The losers have to perform the "Sumo Squat" to an instructor that falls asleep too early. Lucky for them, we didn't get to cash in on the deal. We learned a very important lesson, do NOT make the steaks too spicy when you have Brazilians over for a BBQ or face the "gassy invisible mouse" (aka Cabelinho).

Relson Gracie US Nationals Complete!

The tournament is complete and the results will be posted soon. We gave the results to Cooper (the tournament director) and he will email us the results.

With Chris, Todd, and me working tirelessly on the details and operations of the tournament, the tournament ran smooth once it started with the exception of a big thorn in our side. Cooper was a bit late beginning the day so the tournament started at about 11:00 am. We tried a different method of running the tournament that we always wanted to try out, and finally had the opportunity to, in a big tournament. There were about 180-200 competitors.

On with the news from the tournament. We brought Malcolm, Neal, Brian, Phil, and Steve. Neal and Brian lost their first match in their weight divisions. Brian lost his first fight in the open division, but faired a lot better and gave is opponent a very good fight. He was sick a couple days before the tournament and couldn't breath well in his first match at all. I thought that he was going to stop breathing or something. Steve's inhaler saved the day and Brian recovered 100% and was anxious to enter the open weight. Neal won his first match in the open by an ezekiel or sleeve choke, but lost his next match. Phil took second and performed very well. Malcolm's matches was the most exciting. There was a big man there that actually took down Malcolm twice so he was down 6-0 (actually was 4-0, but the score keeper wrote down the wrong score) halfway through the match. He turned it up and got a takedown and raised the score to 6-2 with a minute remaining. We yelled at him that he needed a mount to win because we thought it was 6-2. Malcolm got the knee to the belly. He frantically tried for a mount a number of times, but the guy just barely stopped it. He got so close with his choke, Americana, and mount attempts that he had 2 advantages. The match ended and I asked Fredson if it was indeed 6-4. He said no and Malcolm was then crowned the champ in his weight class. He entered the open and had some battles there as well. He faced the same guy that was in his weight class. This time, the war was once again on. He took down Malcolm again near the end of the match. Mind you, Malcolm was taken down only once before in his Jiu-Jitsu career. They stopped it near the end of the match and they let the guy start in a solid north/south (69) position. Malcolm did a wrap and roll and turned the fight. While turning the fight, the guy almost got to Malcolm's back and got close to a couple deep chokes. Malcolm finished turning the fight and got his two points and edged this tough guy once again for the open title. All the Brazilians said that Malcolm's match was the most exciting and best of the tournament. Steve was amazing. He had killer competition which made it even more impressive. He had a mixture of both point and submission victories. Steve returned with his weight class and open finals.

Team Relson took the team victory and the $5,000.00 cash prize. An extremely strong Brazilian Top Team took second ($3,000) and Caique's team looked great taking third ($1,000). Upon taking third place, Brazilian Top Team head coach, Jorge Periera, promised to use the prize money for new mats at his school, which was a great gesture and much appreciated by his team.

1st Place Relson Gracie Team: 252 points
2nd Place Brazilian Top Team:
3rd Place Team Caique:

There was even some competitors that came up to us and said that they liked our web page. We were impressed to say the least that they had even heard of it. Back to the trip. We celebrated by going to a clubbing at a place called Fabrics. It was ok with a mix of techno and house music. What we noticed was that all the clubs have terrible lighting, probably to hide the looks of some of the people there. I had way too much to drink and it was a rough ride home (translation: puked like a dog), plus we got lost and took 2 hours to get home after a 30 minute drive to the club.

Weigh-in Day

Today is the weigh-ins for the Relson Gracie US Nationals. We got there early to set up the room. It was a good sized banquet room at the University Plaza Hotel. We utilized the banquet line to serve as a blockage for the stripping competitors. Probably about 90-95% of the competitors pre-registered online so we had printed out sheets waiting for them to just sign the waiver, pay for the competitor, offer the shuttle service (which turned out to be a great idea) for $5, and weigh-in starting at 11:00 AM. Todd, Chris, and I had great help and everything went really smoothly. I generated a informative note with tentative times that each belt was going to fight as well as pick up and drop off locations for the shuttle. We implemented many new ideas that we all had and it was looking to be a pretty smooth tournament. While Todd and I worked at the weigh-ins, Chris met up with the mat setting up crew and set up 4 rings of Swain mats and the tables, rope boarders and warm up area at the gym.

Pre-Registered Competitors looking from the banquet table.

Pre-Register Tables as you enter the room with weigh in area in the far right.

After the weigh-ins were completed, I had the taxing job of inputing all of the competitors' names in to, yup you guessed it, an Excel spreadsheet (inside joke for those of you that attended my wedding and heard my best man dog me about creating Excel spreadsheets for everything). After that was complete, we moved upstairs to our new headquarters, our room, and started to match up the fighters from different schools and create the keys. Relson, Todd, Chris, and I spent the whole night doing this. Cooper left relatively early to catch some shut eye. Relson was lucky and finished the match up section and got to take a little nap for about a couple of hours. Chris, Todd, and I didn't get a wink of sleep and worked to complete all the keys, including the huge open weight classes, and then dividing the weight divisions to run all the white belts at the same time and keep each weight class fighting on the same mat. This was an idea that we stole from the Mundial (or World Championships) where you fight on one mat and keep fighting until you lose or are crowned the champ. This finishes the weight classes faster and allows one entire belt to be complete and out of the way. We just barely completed everything, took a quick shower, got all our paperwork together and went downstairs to meet Cooper to go to the tournament.

The Gracie Boys...
Have Come Back To Columbus!

Well, we survived our cross country journey to Columbus. Our flight plans took us to San Francisco, then Atlanta, then we ran and just made our flight to Columbus. We had to run for our flight because our flight left Honolulu two hours late because something broke on the plane that we were on and then we had to switch plans. We literally had to run about half a mile to our gate and they were closing the doors. We including Chris, myself (Mike), Neal, Brian, and our resident big man, Malcolm. We were supposed to leave Tuesday night at 10:35 pm and arrive on Wednesday at 6:15 pm. Figure it out, that's a lot of flying. Luckily the San Fran and Atlanta legs were not crowded so we all took a center row, stretched out a bit and slept.

We picked up our van that we reserved while we were waiting to change planes because we had a miscommunication regarding who was supposed to make the reservations. We then had to figure out how to get to Joel's house where we are staying. After a while, we finally got here and man does he have a killer pad. Large rooms, extensive weight room, jacuzzi bath, 12x12 mats, gas fire place, and most importantly a fully stocked refrigerator and cabinets. Well, they used to be fully stocked.

Todd gave us directions and we went to the association run by Jeff Hudson to meet Joel, Ray, finally meet Jeff, Fredson, and Royler black belt, Tita (pronounced Chita and no he is not a big moke girl as you can see).

Sidney "Tita" Batista & Fredson Alves
Both 1st Degree Black Belts from Royler Gracie

After watching the class, Joel took us to Adobe's Gila, a bar/club which was actually pretty good for a Wednesday night in Easton. We closed it down, and after a little dance show put on by "Mr. Tuck" Malcolm, we headed to the gayest eatery that was still open at 3AM, Tee Jays. Joel warned us, "he said the food is good, but..." After that we headed home for some sleep.

Our long time student, Phil from Austin, Texas, treated us to a killer breakfast of banana pancakes and turkey bacon. He will be the designated cook because we all can't cook for crap. Preparation has begun for the tournament. Todd took Joel to school and got the parking map for Ohio State University (OSU). The rest of us went to the airport to pick up Marcio "Pe de Pano" Cruz and Cabelinho from Gracie Barra. Cabelinho is a 160 lb. black belt. We are still not certain who is Pe de Pano's opponent. Corletta may be Pano's opponent, but it is not certain yet. We got lost a bunch of times trying to find our way from the airport and was using my terrible Portuguese with the two Brazilians. We finally got them to the motel to check in and brought them to Relson to take care of for the time being. We returned back to Joel's for a little relaxation and the guys trained light tonight, which Chris, Todd, and I ironed out some details of the tournament with Cooper and Relson.

We all got together later that night checked out another club called the Pulse which was pretty cool. We stayed there for a little while and then went outside for a sidewalk vender that was selling some ono spyros (chicken wrapped in torillas), and then returned home for some sleep.

Baret Yoshida's Fight Plans

Many people have asked us if we heard when Baret Yoshida was going to fight next. We just got word that he will be fighting in Japan in November 20th, against an as of yet unnamed opponent. And on December 15th, he will be fighting Cesar Gracie's student, Caleb Mitchell in the IFC.

Front Page News!

The big announcement that we have eluded to is that

Steve Maxwell of Maxercise in Philadelphia has just been awarded his black belt by Relson Gracie. This makes Steve Relson's first black belt ever! Some people may thing, "Does he deserve it?" I can assure you from both of us that he very much deserves his black belt. He owns two Pan Am titles, two world titles, great morals, knows the self-defense techniques, incredible teacher, built a great team, genuinely nice guy, for a 47 or so year old he is built like a Olympic conditioned 22 year old, technically very very good, very open to share techniques,...

You need more?

Congratulations to Steve!

We took some pictures, but Chris forgot to bring the digital cam so pictures of the event will be coming. We also video taped it and will be sending Steve a copy as soon as possible. We are all leaving tonight for Columbus, Ohio so things may get postponed for a bit.

Possible UFC Rumor

We have just heard that Sean Sherk is supposedly in negotiations to fight Carlos Newton for the UFC title. Yeah, I know what you're saying, Matt Hughes was already announced as the next contender. Like I said above, this is a rumor and could be early breaking news. We will update it if it does indeed transfer from the land of the Rumor to the land of the News.

Thanks to All

The Gracie Academy would like to thank all the people who volunteered
their time to help make this tournament a success. Every little thing
helped and was
greatly appreciated!

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT CHANGE

The big announcement that was planned for tonight has been moved from 7:30 pm to 6:00 pm at the Main Academy. I just got word so here you go. Sorry about the inconvenience and I hope many of you can still make it because it's huge!

Back from the Seas

Well, actually back from my Mexican Riviera cruise starting from LA and Disneyland and California Adventure for a day a piece. I am busy catching up on things at work so I'll make this short and elaborate later. We had a great time on the cruise and ate like pigs. I gained 7 pounds in about 10 days. The only help that I had was that Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and Cabo San Lucas was so hot and muggy, I probably sweated off a couple of pounds.

While alone with my new wife, I have learned a couple of things:
1. We did not kill each other so we probably made the right decision on getting married.
2. Let her get a lot of sleep or face the grouch for the entire day (not a pretty thing).
3. My wife does not like winging directions. She starts freaking out if I don't know exactly where I am while driving and since I'm a guy, "I am NOT asking for directions."
4. Put a low limit on all credit cards.
5. Bingo is a more enjoyable game while you are out on the ocean for a couple of days.
6. After being with her for 10 straight days, it may have been a good idea to book a week trip alone after being home for two days. It makes the heart grow fonder (AKA gives us a rest from each other).

... and introduced her to some great games:
1. The tent game.
2. Find the pink elephant.
3. The good old pull my finger.
4. Where is the noise coming from?
5. The accompanying game, Where is that smell coming from?
6. Guess what I just ate?
7. The Blame Game.
8. Singing without using your mouth.

We leave tomorrow night to Ohio!

We will will be leaving Hawaii for Columbus, Ohio to help put on the Relson Gracie National BJJ Tournament. Information on the tournament can be obtained by going to the tournament website at www.gracienationals.com. Relson, Mike, Chris and Todd will be working at the tournament and we have a small team of competitors that will be flying up with us. We will come back on Monday, October 22nd, so there may be a lull in news postings. It all depends on how much fun we are having up there and the accessibility we have to the Internet.

Please bear with us.

The Aiea academy will continue classes as usual under the watchful eye of Rex Barnum and Kaleo Auwae, who will be running the classes while we are gone. There will be a few others that should stop by to help assist them. Thank you guys for covering for us. We really appreciate it!
