Michigan Looking for Tyson-Lewis in BOXING

'Iron Mike' Tyson needed four votes to get his license renewed in Nevada yesterday for his much hyped match with Lennox Lewis. When the finally tally was compiled, he received only one vote from the commission.

With Mike Tyson being shot down by the Nevada commission yesterday, it was inevitable that other states would try to sanction the bout.

With each fighter making approximately $50,000,000 each for the fight, it would easily be the highest paying match ever in boxing and would almost guarantee unbelievable revenue for the live gate as well. The live gate could blow away all existing Pay-Per-View records by a landslide as well.

It has become apparent that the state of Michigan is making an attempt at getting the fight sanctioned in either the Pontiac Silverdome as well as the Auburn Hills Palace.

If the fight were to take place at the Silverdome, it would crush any indoor attendance record for a boxing event on American soil, as that venue seats nearly 60,000.

Although Mike Tyson is fan of the UFC and Tito Ortiz, there is no truth to the rumor that Tyson would do MMA.

There are apparent negotiations in Michigan going on this very minute!

Akira Shoji Says He Wants To Fight Kikuta In 2002

 Akira Shoji

 Sanae Kikuta

Akira Shoji made a guest appearance in Tokyo on "Pride Samurai" (a Sky-Perfect satellite channel devoted to martial arts) on January 16th and declared that he will go after the Middleweight Championship this year. In addition, Shoji said that the person he wants to fight in his return this year is none other than Pancrase's Sanae Kikuta.

Although he broke his right pinky fighting against Jeremy Horn in the December 23rd, 2001 PRIDE 18, Akira Shoji is aiming to make his comeback at this year's April 29th PRIDE 20 at the Yokohama Arena. In his guest appearance on "Pride Samurai", Shoji said, "Last year was completely horrible. My feeling now is that if this year is as bad, there's not much left for me to do here." Vowing to advance or retire in 2002, Shoji said that he wants to fight Kikuta, last year's "87 kilo and under" champion of Abu Dhabi Combat (beating Saulo Riberio in the finals) and the current Light-Heavyweight Champion of Pancrase. Furthermore, Shoji is aiming for the PRIDE GP 2002, scheduled for this fall, in order to compete for the Pride Middleweight Championship. Coming off 3 consecutive losses in 2001, Shoji clearly expects a lot of himself in 2002.

POST FIGHT INTERVIEW:
UFC Lightweight Champion JENS PULVER

ADCC: Jens, congratulations, you proved everyone wrong, but your die hard fans and of course I met your friends and family who believed in you. I know several who won some big bets. What do you have to say to your friend and critics?
Jens: First off, to those who believed in me I can't thank all of you enough. It meant a lot to me to read all of the support. to those who did not well that is OK as well I mean we are all entitled to our opinions and BJ is a great fighter and deserves all of the hype and the fans. I just hope either way they felt they enjoyed the show that is most important to me. I am here to make fights as exciting as possible and I am here to win. So again thank all of you for being fans of the UFC

ADCC: Let's talk about B. J. now, do you think he is was as good as the hype?
Jens: He is all the hype and them some. the man is a great fighter with a big heart and he has earned all of it. I have never been in a fight like that where I had to really suck it up and fight hard to get the advantage like that.

ADCC: Straight to the point, In the second round did he have the armbar?
Jens: Yes, he had the armbar but the round was over and I knew that. I never tapped and had no intention on tapping when he went for it the first time I defended it well but gave up the mount. The second one was better but I did not fight it because I knew the round was up, that is why I pushed his leg because he was still cranking on it and I heard the horn sound so I knew the round was up. I did not want him to work my arm anymore because the round was over. I did not tap and was not going to tap

ADCC: Did you TAP as B. J.'s corner said you did?
Jens: NO!!! I did not. I wanted his to stop cranking on my arm because the round was over and I knew it. Enough said.

ADCC: One judge ruled it a draw, did you feel that it could have been seen that way?
Jens: When it goes to a decision you leave it in the hands of three judges, but I felt I only lost the second round and no other so I disagree with the tie but that is how it goes.

ADCC: Do you feel that that you are the best fighter in this weight class now?
Jens: There are a lot of tough fighters and any one of them can win at anytime. I just need to keep working and keep getting better so that I am the one who continues to win. I do know that I am deserving of this title.

ADCC: Are the rumors true that you will retire now that you won, if not who's next in line?
Jens: The rumors are true to a point I need to get my life in order and I do not like taking the beatings that I do for the amount of money I am paid. I have paid my dues and I feel that I should be paid accordingly. I just want to be able to afford to fight and be able to make a living at it. I am not saying that I am under paid, I just don't feel that I am being paid the amount that I am worth. I love this sport and will continue to do it as long as the lord allows me.

ADCC: Thank you for taking the time to talk.
Jens: Thank you for taking the time to let me talk and allowing me to share my feelings. I also want to thank Joel Gold at full contact fighter, James Wong and Alex Gong at Fairtex for their support and my team for putting up with me and getting me ready every time.

Boxer MIKE TYSON Denied NV. State Boxing License

In a four to one vote today, Tuesday Jan 29th, Mike Tyson was denied his Nevada State license. It looks like his fight with Lennox Lewis for the WBO Heavyweight Title is on hold. After his well documented tirade at the recent press conference with Lewis, no one really knows if this match is going to happen in Nevada or elswewhere.

Tyson's camp continues to maintain there was a mutual agreement for the press conference to go the way it did, but Lewis's bodyguard screwed up the stare down. Lewis in a statement today said that Tyson bit him on the thigh and that he may still seek to fight Tyson at another venue. Once again, the antics of Mike Tyson has turned the sweet science of boxing into a sport for cannibals.

Wrestler Darrell Gholar in Brazil

This week ADCC Brazil was able to witness some of the wrestling sessions at Carlos Azevedo's house. More on him later, but this has become the place where most of the top guys in Brazil are currently training wrestling. There is one question that this probably brings to some minds: who's responsible for the improvements in the Brazilian fighter's refining their wrestling for MMA?

Darrel Gholar is the answer. Besides being a top world class wrestler, Gholar has competed in MMA, so he definitely has a good understanding of how it works. Gholar has developed a nice system of drills specifically geared towards MMA. Brazilian Top team fighters are there sparring Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and the training there lead by Gholar is intense. I think most obervers will agree that new UFC Champion Murilo Bustamante's takedowns improved a lot. Also, Mario Sperry recognizes that although he is one of the best in takedowns from BTT, these sessions helped build his confidence for his fight against Igor Vovchanchin. Rodrigo 'Minotauro' is another BTT star that is benefiting from Gholar's training. He felt much more comfortable standing and controlling the game and getting the takedown like he did with Heath Herring. All of these guys have a finger from Gholar.

Vitor Belfort is also there working for his upcoming match against Tito Ortiz for the UFC's Lightheavyweight Title. There is an old saying that somebody will pay the price for such intense sessions and hard work. MMA fans better check the results next March 22nd. It seems that Brazilian guys have finally entered the 'Crosstraining Era'.

WORLD FIGHTING ALLIANCE 2 SHOW POSTPONED
PAY-PER-VIEW DEAL IN THE WORKS

It's Official!

(Las Vegas, January 25, 2002) The World Fighting Alliance will postpone its February 2nd show, as owner and promoter John Lewis continues negotiations for a pay-per-view television contract. The Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino has pledged its support to the project and had gladly offered to provide the show with an alternate date.

All fourteen fighters on the card also stand behind the move, and look forward to taking on their respective opponents in the future. At this time, the card will remain the same. Expected to take place in a couple months, a new official date will be announced in the coming weeks.

Why make such a dramatic move with the much-anticipated event just a week away? Because pay-per-view will make the WFA accessible to millions of homes. For the sport, this means greater exposure. Postponing the show will allow WFA the time to prepare the show for a pay-per-view audience and pool the creative and monetary resources of what would have been WFA's third show to make this second installment even stronger. Should fans expect a few more surprises now that the show is being prepared for a larger viewing audience? "There are definitely some things in the works. I'll be building on the show and it'll be well worth the wait." The decision to postpone, though not an easy one to make, is a logical one. "The opportunity is just too big to pass up," says Lewis. "This will be a great stride for not only the WFA, but for mixed martial arts as a whole."

Middleweight title headliner Jermaine Andre voiced his approval concerning the decision. "They didn't postpone it because they were being selfish or they were doing something stupid. It was for a very good reason - probably the only legitimate reason to postpone a fight." He added, "I have complete faith in John. I know this will work."

"I want to thank all those who have supported the production," Lewis adds. "I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by this turn of events. In the end, I know this new and improved show will make it up to you."

Ticket refunds for the event will be available at points of purchase, with the WFA honoring all tickets kept at its new night. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for the new official date of the WFA 2 and be prepared once again to enter "Where the Fight Club meets the Night Club."

UFC 36: Worlds Collide LIGHTHEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MINI INTERVIEWS

The light heavyweight championship title is on the line when champion, Tito Ortiz, faces the number one contender, Vitor Belfort. This fight was to take place at UFC 33: Victory in Vegas, but Belfort suffered an injury during training. Ortiz, 8-2-0 in the UFC, was recently tested by Vladmir Matyushenko, where he out wrestled the wrestler. Speaking of his match with Belfort, 'It’s going to be action packed,' said Ortiz, 'And Vitor, I’m going to make him another victim.' Belfort, 5-1-0 in the UFC, looks to fight his game off a weakness of Ortiz. An assured Belfort said, 'I’m back in the UFC where I started.' I recently had a chance to sit down with Tito and Vitor. Here is what they had to say.

Tito Ortiz:

At UFC 36: Worlds Collide, you get Vitor Belfort, a match that was to happen at UFC 33: Victory in Vegas. What are your thoughts on this match? It’s going to be action packed. Fireworks flying. It’s going to be the Tito Ortiz of 2002. You’re going to see that same old Tito... intense and bring a velocity inside the octagon. And Vitor, I’m going to make him another victim.

At UFC 33: Victory in Vegas, you mentioned your opponent is 'the next step to the top.' What is the top for Tito Ortiz? The next step to the top for Tito Ortiz is to be the best UFC fighter to ever grace the octagon. I keep trying to test myself and challenge these guys who were the top guys in the past and the future. Challenge them to challenge myself to be the best. Vitor is the next victim... and we’ll see what happens come March 22nd at the MGM (Grand) Casino.

Have you been challenged in the octagon? I get challenged all the time. I always tell those guys to take a ticket because it seems like there are all types of people who want a shot at me, but they don’t want to pay the big goal to get to me. They automatically want a title shot instead of working their way up like I did. Those guys go ahead and take a number.

Have your skills been challenged recently in the octagon? When I fought in UFC 33 with Vladmir Matyushenko, my skills were challenged hugely. A lot of guys thought I would be out wrestled by him and I actually out wrestled a world champ. Vladmir is no push over that’s for sure, and I showed my dominance is in the octagon The velocity I bring is just amazing. I don’t know how I do it. It seems like I am a cartoon character out there... a comic book marvel that keeps fighting and fighting and fighting.

You make what you do in the Octagon look easy. Is it for you? What I do in the octagon seems easy to me just because of how much hard work I put in before. The hard work is the training. The fighting is smart. That’s just like a Sunday afternoon when you shine your car up just to take it out for a joy ride. It’s the same thing I do. I shine my body up. When fight time comes, it’s time to let it perform. And that’s what happens every time I fight, so I’m doing something right.

There is talk about you going up to heavyweight. What is your side on this talk? Actually I’m the one that thought about it. A lot of people had been bothering me with it. Let those people think what they are going to think. If I keep doing what I do at the light heavyweight, I’m going to have to test myself and go up. I might be able to put on a couple extra pounds. It shouldn’t be a problem at all. For me to keep my weight at 205, I don’t lift weights at all... if I do, it’s super light. I might be able to build muscle. If I want to go up to heavyweight... watch out Randy Couture. (laugh) He’s my idol so that is something to shoot for.

Tito Ortiz... hype or heart? Pure heart. No hype. I bring the hype after the fights over. Everybody sees what I do best... and that’s kick ass.

Vitor Belfort:

On March 22, you are scheduled to compete for the UFC Light Heavyweight title currently held by Tito Ortiz. What are your thoughts? I’m training to win this fight. Doing my best in training. Hopefully things go well. Stepping into the octagon to win and the best man will win.

Do you see any weaknesses in Ortiz’ game? Everybody has a weakness. He has a couple. I’m working on it. Hopefully I have the chance to get his weakness. Make it my game, which is the point.

Are you working on your weakness? Yeah. Everyday of my life. I train everyday to work on my weakness.

You are quoted as saying, 'tomorrow is a promissory note, yesterday is a cancelled check, and today is cash on hand.' What did you mean? The past you cannot do anything about it. You can see what you did wrong and learn from it. You have to improve for the future. I do that in my life. Like the cancelled check. Tomorrow it may come or not. The only thing we know in life is that we are going to die. We just don’t know when or how. Today is what you are doing now. The cash on hand. If you dream of a house by cannot afford it, then buy a condo and live happy in the condo. Life is about dreams. To have a tree you have to plant a seed. A little thing can be a big thing in the future. That’s how it works.

Although you have an impressive record in MMA, yet you feel people don’t respect you. Why is that? They don’t respect me. There crazy. Because Tito doesn’t respect me. When you are successful some people try to put you down to get attention. That’s life. I let God judge them and do what ever he wants to do. I do my best. I don’t do bad to any body. I just want everybody to be successful. I just do my job.

What do you attribute your success? God. Jesus has helped me. My family, my mother, friends and everybody back me up. You are somebody because you have people around you. I want to thank God for making me that person... giving me that chance to be what I am today.

You have said that you 'get bored with the sport.' Are you excited about UFC 36? Of course. I am excited. UFC is a new thing. They are bringing the sport up again. They think like I am thinking. They trust in the sport. They make the sport successful. They don’t make the fight like you use to see. It’s going to the sky.

What will winning the UFC Light Heavyweight title mean to you? It’s going to be my dream again. I came to the UFC and I won the title. I fought Tank, I had a bad loss with Couture, then I fought Silva. I went to Pride, and I am back to the UFC where I started. It will be the best feeling to hold up the belt. I hope God can give me that feeling.

I'm off to Guam for a week

I leave tomorrow for Guam for a week. I will be back Friday night. Mike will be covering the Aiea classes while I am gone, so it will be business as usual.

Fortunately for you loyal readers, I will spare you from boring and crappy "What is Chris Up To?" segments. I definitely won't be shopping in Guam, I will tell you that much. I will, however, visit Tony SanNicolas and the boys at the Relson Gracie association in Guam.

Ta ta for now - Chris

Super Brawl Tentative Match
Blaisdell Arena, Hawaii

It looks like this will be a busy year for Egan Inoue. With a win over Top Ten ranked Joe Doerkson and a recent pull out of a fight with Dennis Hallman at Shogun because of a broken finger, Egan is shooting for an invitation to the UFC by sharpening himself in these two upcoming matches.

March 9, 2002
Egan Inoue v Marcos DaSilva
DaSilva is a Jiu-Jitsu fighter originally from Brazil that Hawaii fight fans saw dismantle Ron Jhun in Super Brawl 13 in text book BJJ fashion. This fight was very early in Jhun's career and now he is 10 times the fighter he was at that time. Hopefully for DaSilva's sake, he has improved as well because he will need it against Egan.

June 14, 2002
Egan Inoue v Saulo Riberio
Saulo Riberio is a 5 time Black Belt Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion and 2000 Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling Championships Champion (2nd Place in 1999 and 2001) who made his big time MMA debut in the Japanese Coliseum event as an under card fight of Rickson vs. Funaki. Riberio got quickly knocked out from a well placed knee by Yuki Kondo while Riberio shot in for a double. Saulo has been chomping at the bit to get another shot in to MMA. Since Saulo is no longer affiliated with Relson, this will not be a Relson/Egan grudge match. This fight will be a good test for both fighters. Egan has had a lot of success in Abu Dhabi, but is much more experienced in MMA than Riberio. Egan has not been tested from a top level Jiu-Jitsu fighter in MMA and Riberio is considered one of the best. It will be interesting to see if Egan's well rounded MMA skills will make the difference against the ground based attacks of Saulo.

New Match Added!

Jake Shields
Cesar Gracie Fight Team
Vs.
Jeremy Williams
Next Generation Academy

This fight has a lot of background to it and it all started when Jake Shields flicked the middle finger to Chris Brennan after Shields won a decision over Brennan's student Tracey Hess. Then shortly after in UFC 35, Shields temmate Gil Castillo beats Chris Brennan in an Decision. There is a lot of BAD BLOOD betwenn both camps as I assure you fire in the ring when the bell rings.Sheilds and Williams as both fighters that has been making waves in California's top events like King of the Cage,Gladiators Challenge and IFC.

Zuffa Wins 'Ultimate Fighting' Trademark
Case in Indiana District Court

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Zuffa LLC, the owner of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, today announced it won a legal victory yesterday (Jan.23) when the United States Seventh District Court for the Northern District of Indiana in Hammond, Ind., issued an order permanently barring Ultimate Athlete, a mixed martial arts media company based in Fresno, Calif., from infringing or causing confusion with Zuffa's 'Ultimate Fighting' and 'Ultimate Fighting Championship' trademarks.

The court order stated Ultimate Athlete's misuse of 'Ultimate Fighting' and 'Ultimate Athlete Fighting' in its promotions created public confusion over whether Ultimate Athlete was affiliated with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Ultimate Athlete also agreed to refrain from encouraging third parties to misuse Zuffa's trademarks. (See complete court order at www.ufc.tv .)

'The popularity of mixed martial arts is really growing not only in the U.S., but also worldwide. It is unfortunate that we had to take this legal action against a group like Ultimate Athlete because its management was determined to infringe on our valuable brand names and trademarks. Hopefully, it is now understood that we have to protect our business and fortunately, the federal court system has allowed us to uphold our rights,' said Dana F. White, president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is the leading mixed martial arts organization in the world. It is owned and operated by Zuffa LLC, which is headquartered in Las Vegas, Nev.

WFA 2 Postponed

We just heard the same rumor, but were waiting for confirmation.

Insider and VERY reliable sources are saying that WFA event scheduled for Las Vegas on 2/2/02 has been postponed.

While rumors are running rampant about a 'major deal' we will be kind enough to let John Lewis and company break the news if all goes as planned.

The postponing of the event gives the WFA time to strategically plan their
second event which was originally to be headlined by Jermaine Andre vs. Ron Jhun. The match was believe to be replaced due to a loss by Jhun in Shooto a few weeks back.

The show featuring the likes of striking sensations Aaron Riley, Duane Ludwig and Yves Edwards as well as top fighters Shonie Carter, Frank Trigg and host of others will be moved to a later date with good news to come from this temporary 'setback.'
