O2 Martial Arts Annual X-Mas Party on Saturday, December 17, 2011 starting at 5:00 PM
Saturday GJJ Class is cancelled due to party
It’s that time of year for our O2 annual Christmas Party! As usual we will have some videos, some Wii competition, raffles, and other things. This is a Potluck so please bring a small dish (somewhere between $10-15, not more please) and we will have a ton of food. If you cannot afford to bring food, please come anyway! This is a family friendly event so bring the wifey/husband and kids or girlfriend/boyfriend to meet the team. We are asking everyone to come BEFORE 6 pm so that we can say grace and start eating at 6:00 pm so that the kids are not starving. Don’t worry if you have to leave early or come late because we usually go until the wee hours. Last year we ended up with the adults going against the kids playing dodgeball at 2:30 am. Lol! Hope to see you all there.

O2MAA’s Kickboxing Team Goes 4-3 at Man Up & Stand Up
Waipahu Filcom
Saturday, December 10
The O2 Kickboxing team performed exceptionally well, however the results do not do us justice. The fights we losts were razor thin and a couple were baffling. Either way we will keep our heads held high and work harder, continue to improve and try to take it out of the hands of the judges. 4 of the boys were awarded belts and Isaac Hopps successfully defended his title. Great job to the fighters and the coaches! And a big Mahalos to the O2 family for coming to support the boys!

O2’s Kickboxing’s team was well represented by Eugene Anguay winning a 3 round decision. He mixed it up well, utilizing a variety of his weapons. Then it was one of O2’s top guns, Ola Lum taking on the always game Nui Wheeler. Both warriors battled it out for all 3 rounds with Ola winning it in the end. O2 Memorial Day Picnic
We wanted to thank everyone that was able to come down and have fun with us at the picnic and especially wanted to thanks all those to helped to make it the best picnic ever! From the early crew, who helped set up, to all the parents that took turns watching not only their kids, but everyone else’s and made sure no kid felt left out or didn’t have a great time, to all the great volleyball players on both teams, to those that helped run the kids games and finally those that stayed into the dark to help clean up and make sure everyone packed up all their things and got out of there.
For those that missed it, you have to make sure to make it to the next one. Thanks to our extended family at Team Papakolea Jiu-Jitsu and Team HK that made it too. We had a blast and we hope everyone had a great time too! Don’t forget to email us any pictures that you have at info@onzuka.com.
Thanks again!

O2’s Results at Scraplafest 3
Donovan Parilla did a great job, coming in 3rd palce in gi. This was his first tournament since earning his blue belt. And Cullen Slavens, another one of our young lions also came in 3rd in the kids gi, but shined in the no gi, taking 1st place, all by submission! He also had a great exhibition with a younger kid, allowing the younger kid to get another match. They represented themselves and O2 well and we are proud of them!

Congratulations to O2’s Kaleo Kwan and O2’s Jiu-Jitsu Team on a busy weekend!
We are proud of one of O2’s head kickboxing instructors, Kaleo Kwan, who fought a war on Friday, but came up short and lost a split decision on Friday night at the Aloha Tower Waterfront on the 808 Battleground/Destiny MMA event where he was attempting to defend his Destiny Lightweight Title. We have a rematch in the works to get the title back!
Also, congratulations to all the competitors that represented Team Relson Gracie and O2 at the Triple Crown at Kaiser High School! You all showed incredible technique and heart. We brought home a ton of hardware and impressed everyone! Scrappler’s Fest in Kauai is coming up in May so please let the instructors know if you plan on going up for this road trip to support Pono and KTI! It should be a blast!

Man-Up & Stand-Up Today!
Waipahu Filcom Community Center, Waipahu, Hawaii
January 29, 2011
Awwhhhh yeah! Man –up & Stand-up is back for all you bangaz that like to stay away from the ground game. 2010’s end of the year show blew the roof off of the filcom. New champions were made but overall every fighter that night put on a champion effort-as always. 2011 will produce new fighters that will probably be fighting for titles at the end of the year because that’s how its done here on Man-up & Stand-up.
The main event for the first show of the year will feature 2010”s fight of the night (possible fight of the year). Robert Banis and Justin Dulay will meet again in the ring to see if the first fight was a fluke. If you didn’t get to see this fight than you missed out on some major damage. Both these guys were lighting each other up as if New Year’s came two months earlier. It was dead even the first round with shots being fired from both sides. There was intense fire with neither man backing down. The opening of the second round, both fighters came out swinging a big roundhouse kick on each other with Robert’s landing first and sending Justin down to receive a standing 8 count. Justin got back up and was in attack mode again but Robert wouldn’t let him return the favor. Both sides punished each other the second round. The third round bell rang and it was on like mochi crunch and popcorn (nah). Justin chased Robert down and delivered unwanted mail to Robert’s face but Robert like a true westsider, received it and returned it to sender. All of the judges had Justin winning the third round but it was just a little to late and Robert Banis walked away with the gold around his waist. Some say the standing 8 count was what decided this fight. But this is a new year for new beginnings and Justin is looking to begin the new year with some redemption. Be there when Man-up & Stand-up dim the lights low and watch these two guys light the filcom up. Das Right
Another fight that will send fans jumping out of their seats is when Dennis “Da Meanest” Montira meets Julio Moreno. These two little hammaz will prove to everyone that you should never take a lightweight lightly. 10 ounces, kicks, knees, heads, etc., will be flying when the bell goes ding. Dennis worked his way up the kickboxing scene with the greatest of ease, taking out everyone from 110-120. Now he has stepped up to fight for the 129# title against Oahu’s favorite cholo Julio Moreno. Julio who is well-known in the mma scene will try to secure a spot in the Man-up & Stand-up world. These two bangaz can give and take cracks so get the medic, get the cutman, get the smelling salts, get your tickets cause these guys are gonna battle til someone falls or til the bell rings. Beleev dat
Another fight that will showcase two fighters chasing the dream is Jared Ferreira and Joseph Enaena. Jared started last year at 190 and will be meeting another relentless fighter by the name of Joseph at 170#. Both of these guys are an inspiration to the show. They do not let any obstacle stand in their way of the goal that they want to achieve. Joseph has the wild, I dont give a f*#k style of fighting. But his ammo comes all the way from Maui so it may work to Jared’s tight defense, I’ll throw when you’re not ready style of fighting. Bombs will be thrown in this match but lets see if Jared can dismantle the bombs and throw some of his own. May the best man win. Be there
Man-up & Stand-up would like to thank all of you who support this show every year. And whoever couldn’t get on this show. As it was said, You’ll definitely have a place on the Feb 19th show. Our word is gold and it cant be sold. Das Right

O2 Martial Arts Academy Annual Christmas Party!
O2 Family:We set the O2 Martial Arts Academy’s Annual Christmas Party for Saturday, December 4 starting at 5:00 pm to take place at O2 Martial Arts Academy (so you all should know the directions, lol). We hope by setting it early in December, it will miss most of the other X-mas parties like family and work so you all can make it. This is a family friendly party so please bring your family, especially your kids. We plan to have movies, a Wii tournament, possible UFC showing, and much more. We ask that every family/student that comes bring a small dish that is $10 or less. If we all bring a little, we will have a lot of food. If you have any suggestions or want to help in any way, please let us know. We would love your input to make our already fun filled X-mas parties even better! We look forward to seeing you there! Thanks! O2MAA Instructors

Man-up & Stand-up 2010 part IV
What: Man-up & Stand-up 2010 part IV (kickboxing)
When: Friday September 10, 2010
Doors open @ 6pm
Where: Waipahu Filipino Community Center
The main event will feature the young but hungry O2 rising star who goes by the name of Isaac Hopps. This young boy has just been getting better with every fight that he has taken. He will now face the confident but cautious Soljah boy “Nui Wheeler”. Nui will be defending his welterweight title for the fourth time. He took a break after losing his super lightweight belt in the beginning of the year but “he’s back”. He hopes to show this young boy that you must first pay your dues to fill his shoes. But it seems as if Isaac has no intentions of paying his dues or becoming journeyman. Isaac is looking to take his spot as THE BOSS. Oh $h!t, Nui ain’t gonna stand for that. As of right now, the ring is Nui’s office and when Sep 10 arrives, we’ll see who is getting demoted or who is still taking care of business. Be there when Nui meets Isaac, west meets east, boss meets apprentice. NUI WHEELER 146 ISAAC HOPPS – das right – its on.
Another fight that will be a showstopper is the Dennis Montera vs Alika Kumukoa match. Dennis is the younger of the two but don’t count this youngster out. Brada has skills and that’s why he has the 115# title. Dennis will be defending his title against an older and relentless fighter who will do anything for that title. Both fighters are very technical and can hit. Dennis has been in kickboxing for a while now and has faced some of the best teenagers at 115# beating mostly everyone his skills made contact with. Alika on the other hand has also faced some well named fighters at 115# to 135# doing fairly well. But Alika will finally get to fight someone at his walking weight on Sep 10. Be there when these two lightweights LIGHT each other up. Das right
Another lightweight fight that promises to be action packed is the Shawn Desantos vs Israel Lovelace. Shawn has beaten most of his opponents and is looking to beat one more that one of his Wahiawa originals failed to do on the last man-up. Israel on the other hand fights as if he has no worries in the world. With the skills that these two bangaz have, they should have no worries. Shawn is wanting to bring this win back to Wahiawa with him but so is Israel, well not to Wahiawa but to the Wesside. Will another Wahiawa boy end up on the canvas from the confident Wessider. Sep 10 – be there.
There will be more exciting matches but Man-up & Stand-up always like to say a few words for the up and coming. If you don’t believe that there will be some major fireworks. Check out this line up

X-1 TO PRESENT BIGGEST TITLE FIGHT IN HAWAIIAN MMA HISTORY ON SEPTEMBER 11TH AT “HEROES”
Second round of light heavyweight title tourney to commence
Honolulu, HI (USA): Top Hawaiian fight promotion X-1 World Events today announced the full fight card for its next incredible event, entitled “HEROES.” This exciting fight card will feature a main event of X-1 World Middleweight Champion Falaniko Vitale putting his belt on the line against devastating KO artist Kala “Kolohe” Hose. Also taking place at the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena that night will be the much-anticipated second round of the X-1 World Light Heavyweight title tournament, as the pairings have been set. Russia’s Vitaly Shemetov, coming off a brutal KO victory over Japanese MMA pioneer Shungo Oyama, will battle Hawaii’s own Poai Suganuma. Also coming off a big KO win is South Korea’s Sang Soo Lee, who will lock horns with California’s Roy Boughton, an undefeated submission specialist. “HEROES” will also showcase two world title fights, as well as a world kickboxing championship match.
Tickets for this incredible event will go on sale on August 7th at the Blaisdell Box Office at 9 AM, as well as all Wal-Mart, Kailua Sports Gear outlets, and on Tickemaster.com, or by calling (800) 745-3000. Prices are $200.00 for 1st row/cageside seats , $150.00 for 2nd row seats, $100.00 for floor seats, $50.00 for the risers/lodges, and $35.00 for the upper bowl. Tickets for all military, law enforcement, fire department, and EMT’s are available with ID at the Blaisdell Box Office for $10 off of the $50 and $35 seats, and $25 off the $200 floor seats, $150 2nd row seats, and $100 floor seats.
Falaniko Vitale (27-9, fifteen submissions) is one of the most respected Hawaiian combatants fighting today. An experienced athlete who recently celebrated ten years as a professional fighter, Vitale proudly represents the 808 Fight Factory, one of the toughest fight gyms on the Islands, and has fought for some of the most well-known promotions in the world. Fans of King of the Cage, Rage in the Cage, SuperBrawl, Icon Sport, the IFL, StrikeForce, and the UFC have all seen his skill set exhibited. In his most recent bout, he defended his coveted X-1 strap against former UFC competitor Kalib Starnes, finishing his controversial opponent via submission in the process. Niko, as he is known, has taken on top names in the sport, including “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler, former StrikeForce Middleweight title challenger Jason “Mayhem” Miller, MMA pioneer Jeremy Horn, StrikeForce/UFC veteran Trevor Prangley, and UFC fighter Frank Trigg. He has beaten notable fighters such as UFC vet Aaron Riley, former UFC Middleweight Champion Dave Menne, UFC middleweight contender Yushin Okami, and the aforementioned Lindland.
Kala “Kolohe” Hose (7-3, seven KO/TKOs) is known for his devastating knockout power, and has garnered a reputation as one of the toughest Island fighters today. He claimed the ICON Middleweight title in August of 2008 with an exciting TKO victory over current UFC fighter Phil Baroni that was lauded by Island fight fans for its great action. Also a veteran of Superbrawl and EliteXC, Hose will look to add the X-1 Middleweight belt to his list of accomplishments. During his career, he’s faced UFC veterans such as Baroni, “Mayhem” Miller, and Reese Andy. He will face what is probably the toughest opponent of his career in Vitale.
In addition, the second round of the heralded X-1 World Light Heavyweight tourney will commence at this event, as former EliteXC headliner and Hawaii native Poai Suganuma (10-3) will match up with “The Dancing Russian” Vitaly Shemetov (7-7), who brutalized respected veteran Shungo Oyama in the first round of the tournament en route to a KO victory. Suganuma, for his part, defeated Greg Schmitt via unanimous decision on his way to advancing. The other semifinal matchup will feature Gracie-trained submission specialist Roy Boughton (4-0, four submissions), who tapped out Adam Akau with a first round guillotine choke to garner a place in the second round of the tournament, as he faces extremely tough South Korean SpiritMC veteran Sang Soo Lee (14-9). Lee knocked out Daniel Madrid with a beautiful right hand in order to move on in the tourney. Also featured will be a 145 lb. World Championship bout between Dave Moreno and Ricky Wallace, as well as a 135 lb. World Championship fight between Bryson Hanson and Russell Doane.
“I am very excited about this incredible card. Having two great Island fighters like Niko and Kolohe fight for the belt, along with the second round of the tournament, and throwing in two other title matches…what a card!” exclaimed Mike Miller, Owner/Promoter of X-1 World Events. “It’s going to be an amazing night of fights.”

On the same night, O2’s Kickboxing Team was being well represented by Big Dave Cordeiro.
Unfortunately for Bryson and Andymar, their matches fell through at the last minute, so Dave was the last man standing. Congratulations to Dave Cordeiro on his kickboxing debut. Dave’s debut ran the gambit of emotions, after performing flawlessly in the fight, he dislocated his shoulder in the 1st round, popped it back in and continued fighting. His shoulder popped out a couple more times in the fight until in the third, it was too much and the fight had to be stopped.

Destiny Uprising: A Night of Finishes
O2 Martial Arts Academy’s Kaleo Kwan Finishes Tim Moon After the First Round!
Main Event:
-155lbs (state title match)
Kaleo “Lights Out” Kwan (O2 Martial Arts Academy) def. Tim “Majik” Moon
TKO due to Tim Moon not answering the 2nd round.
In the main event of the evening, Kaleo Kwan took on the always entertaining Tim Moon. As many expected, this was your classic Striker vs. Grappler match up. Kaleo started the fight with nice head movement and good angles. Tim was hesitant to follow Kaleo when he would back up. When Tim did chase Kwan with a punch, he would not get away clean. Kaleo used his hand speed to land whenever he could. The turning point of the fight came when Tim tried for a takedown and did not get it. He ended up on the mat reaching. That is not a good situation for anybody when Kaleo Kwan is throwing bombs. He was caught by several powerful shots that had him shook. It was only a matter of time at that point. When he managed to get back to his feet, Kaleo just picked him apart with shot after shot. After the first round it was clear that Tim could take no more. But you have to give Tim props for having the heart that he does. Many would have just tapped to strikes but he hung it out throughout the entire first round. Kaleo defended his title and keeps his nickname relevant!
As I said before, great fights from top to bottom. Thanks to Destiny for putting on such a great show once again. Thank you to all the fighters and all of the fans who came out and made the atmosphere what it was. I cannot stress enough that I wish there was enough space and time to outline every single fight because of how many stars shined. Next Destiny event, everyone needs to come out in support and see it first hand. Amazing night with fantastic fights.

O2’s Al Napoleon fought a triple threat match this past Saturday at the Mad Skills event at the Waipahu Filcom, but came up short losing a decision. He impressed everyone with his technique and heart. Congratulations to Al for putting it on the line and challenging himself! We are all proud of him.

Congratulations to the O2 NAGA Competitors!
Congratulations to the team for showing up in force and showing excellent technique at all levels. I think many of the guys surprised themselves. The instructors have been telling some guys that they will do good, but some of them had to prove it to themselves and boy did they!
Even though all our competitors did not win, they all showed incredible heart by competing as well as displayed a ton of technique that all the instructors got a lot of comments about from the instructors of other schools.
Thanks to everyone that rushed and bought the Relson Gracie/O2 team shirt. We would like everyone in the academy to own one and if possible, all your family and friends that support you at the tournaments. We will keep the price at a very low $10 so that everyone can afford to outfit the entire clan to show support to the Relson Gracie team!
10/11/2009

O2’s Kaleo Kwan Wins Destiny State Championship!
Kaleo put on a stand up MMA clinic on Saturday night as he won an unanimous decision over an extremely tough Eddie Rincon on the Destiny Show in the Maui War Memorial. He probably only got hit about 10 times through the three round decision. All the techniques that Kaleo and the other instructors at O2 were on display this night and executed to perfection.
Congratulations to Kaleo on an incredible performance and thanks to the entire team that helped him prepare for this tough bout!
New Hope Jiu-Jitsu Video Shoot This Saturday!
We are asking that all students see if they can make it down to the Saturday New Hope Jiu-Jitsu Ministry class this Saturday because head instructor Gye Nitta has arranged for the New Hope Church video crew to come down and video the class.
We are specifically asking all the advanced belts, but we would like to pack the house so that we can help spread the word on our unique and great class that we are running on Saturdays!
Chris and I will be on Maui at the tournament and Gye could not push back the video shoot so please help us out and show up to support O2 and New Hope!

O2MAA Goes 1-2 at Mad Skills

Justin Dulay won via decision
Albert Napoleon lost via decision (He took the fight the day before)
Koa Lyu lost via decision
The fights were very close, but Al’s and Koa’s opponents were just a little better last night, but all three fighters fought their hearts out and had a good time.

Mike Gets a Stripe!
Relson came by tonight to present Sam Mahi and Mike with the new standard diplomas. Both of them had the older style and while there Relson promoted Mike one strip.
Relson also taught a great street fighting half guard and cross side from the bottom class.
The plan is that Todd Tanaka will get his black belt at the Queen St academy tomorrow night. Relson will give a class there from 6 to 7 pm and then the promotion will be at 7 pm. Please come to support Todd on this huge night!

Too Live Stu Kam and the Amazing Jonathan Testutani received their purple belts on Monday night. Both have been tearing up the mats for a while now and all the higher belts are very glad that they are now purples so it does not look that bad when they are all over them like a cheap suit.
We look forward to them helping to bring up the next wave of our stars of the academy.
Congratulations also to our top team of kids. Kaizen Nino, Casey Nitta, Liam Mason, and Kapena Fitzgerald were awarded their yellow belts on Sunday (Kapena on Monday night)! These kids are just unbelieveable with the amount of technique they show at such a young age.

O2 Day Classes Have Moved
Oahu Tae Kwon Do has moved locations hence, our day classes has moved as well.
The day classes are not located on Moanalua Road right near Buzz’s Steakhouse, the Golf Driving Range, Maui Off Road, Pizza Hut, and Grace’s Drive Inn. I believe the driveway is right across the street from the drive way to go in to Safeway.
Here should be an Oahu TKD sign on the street so please look for that. I do not have the address yet, but will post it as soon as I get it.
See you in class!

Congratulations to O2’s Grant and Nicole on their baby Boy!
Grant and Nicole just welcomed their beautiful baby boy, Ezekiel, in to this world yesterday. They are such great people that we all know that they will make phenomenal parents.
By the way, with the name Ezekiel, you can be sure that he will have an insane sleeve choke! lol!
Congratulations to O2’s Newest Purple John Watanabe
John is a guy that would easily fall through the cracks because he is so soft spoken and humble, but is very loyal and technically sound on the mats. John always jumps at the opportunity to assist in every way he can and it is our pleasure to promote a much deserving technician like John to purple belt!

Congratulations to Chris and Shane
Chris Onzuka and Shane Agena finally received their black belts from Relson tonight at O2 Martial Arts Academy. Now O2 has four Relson Gracie Black Belts on our teaching staff as well as a huge number of brown and purple belts.
Chris matched me and went bare back for his dog crawl through the belt whipping line while Shane decided to keep the skin on his back somewhat intact and went with the gi. Both guys took their beatings like men as they graduated to their black belts.
Thanks to all the guys from the other schools and our O2 team that came to support Chris and Shane on this important night!

Master Helio Gracie has passed away
Jiu-Jitsu loses its icon
It is with great sadness that GRACIEMAG.com announces the passing of Grandmaster Helio Gracie. At 95 years of age, the great icon and one of those most responsible for Jiu-Jitsu’s success in Brazil and the world died this morning, at Beneficencia Portuguesa Hospital, in Petropolis, mountain region of Rio de Janeiro.
“I created a flag from the sport’s dignity. I oversee the name of my family with affection and nerves of blood,” said the Professor, as his last worlds.
The Master will be buried this Thursday afternoon, at 5 pm, at the Chapel of the Petropolis municipal cemetery.
Helio Gracie’s last public appearance occurred in December of last year, during a belt-promotion ceremony held by Gracie Humaita at the Guanabara Yacht Club.
In October, Helio Gracie celebrated his 95th birthday at the Gracie Humaita academy, in Rio de Janeiro. Click here to see how the party went.
In one of his most famous interviews, published in the special 100th issue of GRACIEMAG, the professor had declared: “I’ve already told my sons that when I die I want there to be a party. No drinking, no debauchery.”
All workers at Gracie Publishing, the company responsible for GRACIEMAG, NOCAUTE and GRACIEMAG.com are in mourning and express their condolences and sadness to the bereaved family, his wife Vera, sons Rorion, Relson, Rickson, Rolker, Royler, Royce, Rherica, Robin and Ricci.
We will be back with more information shortly.

GRAND MASTER HELIO GRACIE PASSES AWAY AT 95
Helio Gracie, legendary patriarch of the Gracie family and father of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, has passed away at the age of 95, according to a report by GracieMag.com.
Gracie passed in his sleep early Thursday in Itaipaiva, Rio de Janeiro, said another report on Sherdog.com, after he had been admitted to a local hospital a few days prior for stomach problems.
Gracie was recognized worldwide for his accomplishments in the sport of jiu-jitsu, as well as crossing over into other formats, while also serving as father to legends like Royce, Rickson, and Rorion Gracie, who helped found the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
A 10th degree red belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Helio was a national hero in Brazil. His family name has carried on for generations of some of the best grapplers in the entire world, with their style defining a sport.
Last October, Gracie celebrated his 95th birthday. He will be remembered throughout time as the man who helped build this generation of fighters and grapplers that compete worldwide.
Known for many matches throughout his life, Gracie took on fighters from numerous different disciplines to help promote the jiu-jitsu legacy. One fight that attracted thousands of fans and even the president of Brazil was a match pitting Helio against Japanese judoka Masahiko Kimura.
The two warriors battled it out and in the end it was Kimura who applied a shoulder and arm lock that actually broke the arm of Helio, although he refused to tap. From that point on the hold known as the “reverse ude-garami” was forever referred to as the “Kimura,” a move still used in jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts today.
In an interview with GracieMag.com, Gracie said about his death, “I’ve already told my sons that when I die I want there to be a party. No drinking, no debauchery.”
The world has one less legend today after the passing of Grandmaster Helio Gracie.

Womens and Kids’ Kickboxing Class was a Great Success!
Kaleo Kwan and Chris Slavens lead an army of women and kids in our first kickboxing class! We had many of the kids from our kickboxing class continue on to take our kickboxing which we hoped they would. We also had a few mothers take the class with their kids to get a great work out in and get to spend some fun time with their kids!
Please encourage any women of any age to come and try out the Sunday class! Everyone got a great workout while learning some legitimate kickboxing techniques!

O2MAA’s Kaleo Kwan and PJ Dean to Fight on the EliteXC Card!
Kaleo Kwan will be fighting BJ Penn’s Mike Aina which is probably the best fight on the entire card. Both are considered the top kickboxers in the state and both are coming off impressive performances. Kaleo and Mike both are very solid on the ground, but I think everyone will agree that this will be a stand up war.
PJ Dean has just been inked to fight HMC’s Dean Lista. Dean is a very solid and experienced opponent and we look forward to a great fight. PJ wants to continue his winning and will train like a madman for this fight.
Good luck to two of our studs in their upcoming wars!
O2MAA’s Ryan and Don Cabinian to Fight at the next HFC!
Two of our top grappling studs, Ryan and Don, will be fighting in an MMA match at the next HFC at Dole Cannery on May 9th. Please come and support two of our closest friends and fierce competitors.

RIP Lars Chase
O2MAA student Lars Chase passed away earlier this week. He was a great friend who always put people in a good mood and was a fierce competitor on the mats. When you rolled with Lars, you better bite down, prepare for a battle, and hope for the best. He represented our school many times in competition and we were honored that he came to our school and that we had a chance to meet him.
His funeral services are this Friday (4/11/08) from 10:30 am to 2:00 PM at the Moanalua Community Church and burial will be held at Punchbowl cemetary at 3:00 pm.

Congratulations to Chris and Kelly!

O2MAA will be Offering Day Classes!
We always wanted to offer day classes to our students, but our lease agreement does not allow us to run day classes at our location. We have found a new location to run these day classes in the same area!
It would not be right of us to say to our students that if you want to remain loyal to us and to the Relson Gracie team and can only train during the day to not offer day classes.
That being said, we are proud to announce that we are offering day classes beginning Friday, May 2. The classes will be taught by none other than Sam Mahi, one of the first Relson Gracie Black Belts and one of the founders of O2MAA (formally known as the Relson Gracie Aiea Academy & Academia Casca Grossa de Jiu-Jitsu)
The day classes will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.
The day classes will be held in the Oahu Tae Kwan Do academy on the second floor in the building directly behind us which is Makai (Ocean side) of the bike path facing the Ocean. Rex has Left the Relson Gracie Team
Long time Relson Gracie Student and assistant instructor at O2MAA, Rex Barnum, has left the Relson Gracie Team and has opened a new school for Gracie Barra which is a rival school to the Relson Gracie Team.
Relson’s rules are very simple. All Relson Gracie students can only train at Relson Gracie schools and no other BJJ student can train at one of his schools. MMA schools are exempt from this rule because they do not compete in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments. Obviously, the MMA schools that are aligned with a BJJ team is included the schools that Relson Gracie students CANNOT train at or have their members train at Relson’s schools. This stems from teaching students directly or indirectly that will compete against a Relson Gracie student and not represent the Relson Gracie Team. How would you feel if you taught someone a technique that they used against one of our team members in a tournament while representing a different team or vice versa? Also, by letting practioners that do not compete, but still train at their own school come an take classes, they will teach their home team the techniques to use against us, which I refer to indirectly teaching other schools to compete against us.
Rex did not want to comply to this rule as well as felt he needed a change so he left the team. We tried our best to talk him back in to the team, but he decided to leave.
We ask that all Relson Gracie students DO NOT train at Rex’s school. He has been telling some of the guys at our school to come over to train because he has an open door policy. This is AGAINST the rules of the Relson Gracie Team. If you would like to train with other guys, you are welcome to train at the other Relson Gracie Associations (other than O2MAA on different days) such as Team Papakolea Jiu-Jitsu, Team HK, Kaneohe Team, Queen St. Academy, Hawaii Kai, Gracie Kahalu’u, and Kauai Technical Institute and these are all schools just in Hawaii so there are many options for our teach to get some fresh bodies to roll with and still stay within the team. Relson has many schools on the mainland as well that you will be welcomed with open arms.
Please spread the word if you bump in to other students.

Schedule:
6:00PM – Party starts

winning video producer and videographer Gye Nitta. (Hopefully Gye has been working on this!)
2. PS/2 tournament. $5 entry fee with all the money being distributed to the top three placers. The top three placers will be immortalized on our Kick Ass Tournament Trophy! Don’t worry for those who don’t play, we handicap the experienced players to make it fair.
3. Bingo for cash! $1 a game or so and the winner gets the pot. We did this last year and it was a blast.
We are open to any other ideas that you may have, but please suggest something quick so we have time to set it up and get the things that we need to make it happen.
Please RSVP as soon as possible by email (preferably, info@onzuka.com or just reply to this email) or phone with who is coming and if you are bringing your kids.

2007 Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling Champ Rani Yahya Seminar at O2 Martial Arts Academy This Wednesday 11/14!
Thanks to Burton Richardson, who has arranged a No Gi Submission Wrestling seminar with the best submission grappler in the world and active MMA fighter, Rani Yahya. Rani has a myriad of titles in submission grappling, but is most known for coming out of no where after living and training with Rickson Gracie to win the Brazilian Abu Dhabi trials only to come short that year (2005). However 2007 was going to be different and Rani dethroned multiple time champ Leo Vierra to capture the title and bragging rights of being the world’s best submission grappler. Rani has also been regularly competing in MMA and was featured on WEC Wreckage competing in MMA, most notably beating UFC veteran, Mike Hominick.
Here are the details of this once in a lifetime seminar!

Hawaiian kickboxer joins Kau Inoa, places his name
The Office of Hawaiian Affairs Hawaiian Governance Hale announced yesterday a new partnership formed with professional boxer, kickboxer and mixed-martial arts (MMA) fighter Kaleo Kwan. Kwan is of Native Hawaiian ancestry, born and raised in Waimanalo.
Po’alima, 26 ‘Okakopa 2007, Kwan will be fighting in Las Vegas, Nevada for ShoXC. Kwan’s fight will be aired on the Showtime national network, where he will be wearing Kau Inoa gear.
“This is a great opportunity for us to embark on new territory and gather more Hawaiians from across the US,” said Kaelene Nihipali of Hawaiian Governance Hale. “Please help us in welcoming Kaleo to the OHA ‘Ohana, and show your support for him in his upcoming ventures.”
Kwan has also agreed to promote Kau Inoa by appearing in a television commercial urging Hawaiians to “place their name” on the Kau Inoa rolls.

Kwan is the second Native Hawaiian MMA fighter to partner with OHA.
Earlier this year, fighter BJ Penn agreed to support the Kau Inoa effort. He is currently appearing in a multimedia campaign that includes print ads, radio spots and television commercials.
Penn fought for the UFC lightweight title in 2001, but lost in a close decision. In subsequent fights, he went up a division to welterweight and won the belt, only to have it stripped later when he left the UFC.
Next month, Penn gets another shot at the UFC lightweight title belt.

Ryan Cabinian Dominates at HFC!
O2MAA family member Ryan Cabinian dominated defending champ Donald Gonzales of BJ Penn’s MMA on Saturday night at the Hawaii Fighting Championships. Ryan executed perfect strategy and used his unstoppable wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu technique to dominate the match from start to finish. Ryan and Donald did trade and Donald hit Ryan with some good shots, but was unable to hurt him. Donald has been knocking out everyone as of late and has one punch knockout power so it was a huge step up in competition for the debut of Ryan.
Congratulations to Ryan on his win and we appreciate him and his family always supporting O2 Martial Arts Academy and us!

Kyle Snyder-Olivares loss by 3-0 (guard pass) in the open weight purple belt.
Kaleo Hosaka lost by 6-0 from a hip heist to mount with 1 min left.
Roger Gracie is in the finals of the absolute and his weight class of the black belt division.
Jake Mapes of Maui JJ won his first match and then was submitted by arm bar in his weight class and was submitted in the first round of the absolute. I think I got that right.

8/23/07

Promotion Days!
We always say that we are terrible motivators using belt promotions. We are concentrating so much on getting all of you better by our teaching methods, drills, and sparring that usually belt promotions are one of the last things we think of. Also, we want to keep the integrity of the belts so that if you get a belt promotion, you can compete at the World Championship level. Some people take longer than others, but that is because some people are just more athletically inclined, have past experience that helps them absorb Jiu-Jitsu faster like wrestled or played judo previously, and/or have more time to invest in training which will naturally produce faster results.
We will be having two big days of promotions on Monday, August 20 and Tuesday, August 21. If you train on Mondays and Fridays, please try to make it on Aug 20 and if you train any of the other days (Tue – Thurs), please come on Aug 21.
Please help us spread the word and don’t worry, you will not influence us to give you a belt or stripe by showing up or helping spread the word. You will get a promotion if you deserve it. We do not do charity work. We always say that a white belt is the last belt that you buy and that it is our honor to promote the students that train with us and invest their time and hard earned money with us. It would be a crime for us to give someone a belt that does not deserve it because we would be providing a false sense of security which could be life threatening. Our jobs are to teach you self-defense, build self-confidence, and self-worth as well as influence you to be an overall moral and ethical person by leading by example. Belt promotions based on taking a certain number of classes do not ensure that you have absorbed the material and can apply it properly. This can only be determined on a personal level for each student. Just enjoy Jiu-Jitsu, pay attention in class, and try the techniques while sparring. You will get better.
Our feeling was always that a student should never ask for a promotion because it cheapens the entire system of belt promotions. In fact, the guys who ask to be promoted usually get put in the back of the line.
See you all on Aug 20th and 21st!

The Boys have a Blast in Maui!
As expected, we did some male/team bonding during this trip. We get to learn a lot about each other when you have to stay with about 10 guys within 3 rooms and a living room. We also learned that if you plan on going out, you should not let a Tomimatsu participate in a drinking game called quarters. Now Kevin’s name is “Crash and Burn” Tomimatsu. Please feel free to call him that. He’ll understand. Another life lesson for the guys is never, ever fall asleep early with the other guys up. For all of you that did not come, you may want to make sure you make it to our annual X-mas party where we wil probably have our resident video editing guru, Gye Nitta, make a special “Adult” version of a video where it will show what happens to the boys that take a light nap. We have a special way of waking them up that I’m sure you will enjoy. We did.
We had mixed results, but all the boys did well and showed a lot of technique which is what is important. Shane had a fluke injury at about 1-1/2 minutes in to his match with Kaleo Lopez of Kamole. While they were jocking for position standing, Kaleo’s thumb accidentally went right in to Shane’s eye and cause a decent cut on his eye lid right near his eye. I made the call to pull Shane out of the match because I did not want him to risk further injury. He was bummed of course, but for the guys who don’t know, I am blind in my right eye. I am forever worried that if I lose sight in my left eye, I am screwed for life and my money making skills are gone. I would never put anyone in this position if I could help it and I could definitely help it with Shane so it was a no brainer to pull him out. He trained his ass off, but I always say that you judge a man by his character and character is developed by how you handle disappointments and losses. Shane will bounce back and is itching to get back to training. Just do me a favor and keep him from sparring for at least 2-3 weeks until that cut heals so he can get back to 100%.
For those who missed this tournament, we set an all time record by finishing the tournament a little after 5 pm! The tournament ran extremely smooth with at least 4 matches going at one time and some times 6 matches going on during the Kid’s division. The staff did a great job at keeping the tournament moving and the competitors put on a great show for everyone!
Don’t miss next year’s event!

It has been changed to June 23 and will be held at UH Gym #1. All other information remains the same.
The 2nd leg of the Triple Crown series, 2007 HAWAIIAN OPEN OF BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU, has been confirmed. Due to circumstances beyond their control, Triple Crown organizers have been forced to change the tournament date to Saturday, June 23, 2007, at the University of Hawaii Gym #1 (next door to Klum Gym). Event organizers made every effort to maintain the original date, but after an exhaustive search through public, private and military facilities, little options were available and the

O2 Martial Arts Academy Memorial Day Picnic!
We will be having a long overdue picnic on Sunday, May 27, 2007 at Ala Moana Beach Park. This used to be a tradition for our academy on all three day weekends, but we let a few long weekends fall through the crack.
Here are the quick specifics:
What: O2 Martial Arts Academy Picnic
(Other Relson Gracie Academy students are always welcomed!)
When: Sunday, May 27, 2007
Time: 8:00 am to ? (usually all day and after the sun goes down)
Where: Ala Moana Beach Park (we usually try for the key hole in the middle of the park so we will be around that area)
What to bring: As always, it is a potluck so bring what ever you want. We usually tell everyone to keep the dishes to about $10-15 to keep it inexpensive. If everyone brings a little bit, we will have a lot of food. We always do.
We picked Sunday because Memorial day (Monday) is usually incredibly packed and this gives us time on Monday to relax and rest up for work on Tuesday.
If you just happen to be in the area on that day, just stop by. Don’t worry about having to bring something. It’s more about the companionship than anything else.
We will probably play volleyball and what ever else comes to mind.
Hope to see you there!
Class will be closed that day so that everyone can come to the beach!

Relson Gracie Academies In-School Tournament!
On Saturday, May 19th at 6:00 pm, we will be hosting another Gracie academy in-school tournament to prepare our team for Brazilian Freestyle’s upcoming tournament on June 28. It will be held at the O2 Martial Arts Academy and the same deal applies as the last time:
– This time we will be doing gi and no gi.
– Please do not bring spectators because of the limited space.
– $20 to enter
– Try your best to register before the tournament date so that we can prep as much as we can to start on time.
– This is a no pressure tournament so if you have never competed before, this is a great opportunity to compete on a smaller scale and test yourself. For the guys who love to compete, this is another opportunity to hone your craft and see where your cardio is for the big upcoming tournament.
– This is a great team building opportunity so that you are familiar with the guys from the other schools so that we all can support each other at all the tournaments.
– We are doing on a Saturday this time so that Friday night traffic is not an issue.
– We will break up the weight classes as much as possible, but want want to give guys a lot of matches.
– We will be using CBJJ rules which is the international rules that are used in the Pan Ams and the World Championships. The main difference between the international rules and Brazilian Freestyle’s (BFJJ) rules are there are no advantages in the BFJJ tournaments.
Everyone from a Relson Gracie Academy or Association are welcome to compete. No outside academies can compete.
The weight classes are:
Under 150
151-175
176-200
201 and over
This applies for gi and no gi.
Kids divisions will be determined when we have all the kids registered and will match them based on age and weight (the best we can).
We would welcome people to help us run the tournament. We would like three timekeepers/score takers and three guy to run the keys. If we have more, we can cycle the guys out to give them a rest. We ask that the purple and brown belts help with the refereeing. Even if you have not ref’d before, this is a good opportunity to get your feet wet. We will be there to coach you.

Congratulations to PJ!
PJ had a tough fight at Icon Sport and gutted out three rounds against a very good wrestler. Although he lost, he showed great technique with his guard recovery, defense from the guard, and also was very active in the guard. He hurt his opponent a couple times during the fight and at the end of one round, his opponent actually walked to our corner. His opponent, Scott Anderson, was unknown to us because he was a last minute replacement because PJ’s original opponent had to pull out because he blew out his knee. PJ was banged up prior to the fight, but there was no way he was going to pull out. He sucked it up and fought a tough fight. We are very proud that PJ represented our academy and he is looking forward to fighting again soon.

Icon Sport Tickets for Sale!
Icon Sports promoters have dropped off some special school rate tickets for us to sell. They are in the “O” section in the risers on row 7 and 8. They are $50 which are a $5 discount and no handling fee. Please contact Mike and Chris immediately if you are interested by shooting us an email. We are going to hold the tickets until early next week and then give them back to the promoters so that they can sell them for the event.
O2MAA’s own PJ Dean will be fighting on the card so come support him on 3/31/07 at Blaisdell Arena.

Congratulations to O2MAA’s Kickboxing Instructor Kaleo Kwan!
This past Saturday at X-1, O2 Martial Arts Academy’s kickboxing instructor, Kaleo Kwan, won a unanimous decision over 6 time world kickboxing champion and one of the most successful kickboxers from Hawaii, Danny Steele. Kaleo executed perfect strategy by staying outside of Danny’s lethal leg kicks, only to come in to strike and tie up. Kaleo used his superior hand speed and movement to consistently tag Steele and was hardly hit during the three round fight.

Chris Slavens will Guest Instruct for Kickboxing on Thurs!
Long time student and chief recruiter for the school for a number of years, Chris Slavens, just happens to be an incredible boxer and a phenominal teacher. He blew us all away the last time he taught with his ability to break everything down to the vital components in regards to stance, defense, and offense.
Don’t miss this class!

In School Tournament is Coming Soon!
Flyer/Registration forms have been delivered to the main academy and some left for Ronn Shiraki to take to the Kaneohe Team. I delivered a bunch to Kaleo Auwae for the Team Papakolea Jiu-Jitsu and Bernard Villanueva delivered some to Team HK. Hopefully every school has a bunch of people coming to enter the tournament so that the entire Relson Gracie Team is thoroughly prepared for Romolo’s tournament on March 10th.
We are now accepting registrations and payment for the upcoming tournament. Anyone that wants to weigh in the week of the tournament will be allowed to do so as long as they are walking around at a weight that is comfortably within the boundaries. All O2 students should weigh themselves Wed (2/21) or Thurs (2/22) so that we do not waste time weighing people in on the tournament day. Any other academy that wants to stop by to weigh in is encouraged to do so as well. We want to hit the ground running on Friday so that we can get out of there at a decent hour.

A Huge Thanks to Nakano-san & Kasahara-san!
Thanks to Mark Kurano for bringing his friends from Japan, one of whom just happen to be a world class Judoka to the O2 Martial Arts Academy last night. He taught some fundamental throws, but he taught them the way he performs them at the world class level. Due to this class alone, he helped to totally revamp most our theories and practical aspects of our Judo and introduced the elite level of Judo to the whole academy.
Shintaro Nakano is a member of the All Japan Judo Team, first competing at 60kg and then moving up in weight to perform even better at the 69kg division. I believe he is currently ranked 5th in Japan.
Takeyuki Kasahara also accompanied Nakano-san. Kasahara is sponsored by Secon (a Japanese securities firm) and a Chuo University player. He was a master of the uchimata and was catching everyone with it, with total control. Everyone, especially me, appreciated the soft landing due to his skill level performing this throw.
These guys were awesome to learn from and they took on all comers in randori (sparring), often causing the whole academy to gasp, then cheer all the while being thoroughly impressed.

Triple Congratulations!
Just last night at about 2 am, one of our best friends and the God parents to my son, had their second baby girl. Congratulations to Ian and Jocelyn Beltran! Ian teaches our Escrima (Filipino Stickfighting) classes at our school, O2 Martial Arts Academy. Mother and baby are doing well and resting at Queens Hospital. I’m sure that big sister Sage is in for a rude awaking now that she is not the only child in the house. heh heh.
Congratulations also to another one of our best friends and assistant instructor Rex Barnum had a baby girl around a month ago. He came back to class the other night and everyone is doing well.
Lastly, a huge promotion for us at O2 was our latest brown belt was awarded to Brandon Bernardino who is Shane, Chris, and my right hand man and has been ripping up the mats as usual. We could not hold him back any longer. Relson came by to teach a class on Tuesday night and awarded him his brown belt.
2/7/07
Relson at O2
Relson Gracie stopped by at O2 and taught a class to a packed house of about 45 students. He taught the step up to his guard, submissions, and some sweeps. Everyone loved it. We will try to bring him back once every couple months so that our guys can get a chance to learn from the man who taught us.

Kickboxing at O2 has Officially Begun!
We are excited to start boxing and kickboxing classes on Thursday, February 1, 2007. We have none other than Kaleo Kwan as the head instructor. Kaleo is a numerous boxing and kickboxing champion as well as a successful MMA competitor. The classes will be from 6:30-8:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In order to have a better time for the kickboxing class, we are pushing back our Tuesday Jiu-Jitsu classes to 8:00-10:00 pm so that Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will now all have consistent class times. If you missed the two seminars that Kaleo gave, you missed out. The payment for his classes will be like any other Jiu-Jitsu or Escrima class and you can take any combination of the three classes so the multiple class discount applies. He is a great instructor and very personable. We have known him and have been friends with him for years so we guarantee that you will thoroughly enjoy his classes!
Check out the new schedule!

O2 and Team Papakolea Jiu-Jitsu Team up for BBQ
We are having a picnic at the Beach for our school as well as our brother school, Papakolea Fight Club. PFC is celebrating their 2nd anniversary and we have not had a BBQ at the beach for a while so we decided to combine the affair so that everyone gets to meet each other from the different schools to bring the schools closer together. I believe the spot is space 27 and it is located on the Ewa end of the beach park on the mauka (mountain) side of the park just as you make your first bend after entering the park from the Ewa end entrance. It is a potluck so bring something small and make sure you bring your family for a day of fun at the beach. We will be playing volleyball, among other things and just hanging out. Please try to make it because we are sure that you will enjoy yourself!
Where: Ala Moana Beach Park, Lot 27
When: This Saturday, Jan 27
Time: 8:00 am to ?
What to bring: Potluck and your family!
