Don Frye's Speaks
Out:
His comments about the incident with Marcelo Tiger's team in
Hawaii and about Dan Severn's comments in the last issue of FCF
by Chris Onzuka
After hearing about what
happened at Rage In The Cage II in Hawaii and what Dan Severn
wrote about Don Frye in his piece entitled "Talk Is Cheap!"
featured in the last issue of FCF, I called Don on October 24,
1999 to find out what exactly happened and to get his comments
about the Severn piece.
FCF: Tell us exactly what
happened at Rage In The Cage II in Hawaii with Marcelo Tiger's
team.
DF: Myself and my wife were sitting ringside at the cage there.
I had just been introduced at intermission, so everybody was
fully aware that I was there and where I was sitting. During
the fight between Joe Charles and Marcelo, eventually Joe Charles
got tired and Marcelo got on top and [after Charles tapped out]
Marcelo's team rushed the ring. One of them slammed into the
back of my shoulder. I'm sure it wasn't an accident, I think
it was all perfectly calculated. You know, there was a police
officer on each end of the ring, so if I was to stand up and
start a fight, I would be the one going to jail. Some of the
women from Marcelo's team were standing behind my wife Molly
and hit her a couple times in the head with their cups. I'm
sure it was purely accidental [laughing sarcastically]. So that's
the situation. The guy who jumped in front of me, was jumping
up and down, climbing the cage right in front of me, obstructing
my view. It was completely unprofessional on their part.
FCF: Obviously you think
that this was intentional. Why do you think they would do that?
To be disrespectful, make a name for themselves
DF: Disrespectful. Just to start a little shit. At the last
fight [Super Brawl 12, when Marcelo fought Egan Inoue] they started
a freakin' riot! Theoretically the martial arts are supposed
to be about honor, discipline, and respect, and his team just
doesn't show any of it.
FCF: Is it true that you
personally challenged him?
DF: Yeah. I made it known immediately after the fight. I told
the promoter that I would like to fight him in the next event.
FCF: It was rumored that
the World Extreme Fighting event was contacted by you because
Marcelo is supposed to fight at their event. Are they trying
to match the two of you up in that event?
DF: No, I didn't contact anybody. What happened was Cal Cooper
heard that I wanted to fight Marcelo, so Cal contacted me on
behalf of the promoter in Florida and wanted to know if I would
be interested in fighting there. I said sure. I said that I
would like to fight him in Hawaii because Leon and Doug Hartman
[Rage In The Cage promoters] were the ones who put on the fight.
And it was at their event where the situation happened, plus
I like Hawaii. I love Hawaii, if I had the change to fight in
Hawaii, I would jump at it.
FCF: Did they mention any
specifics?
DF: Right now, we are negociating as far as money, but I don't
know if Marcelo even knows that I want to fight him.
FCF: I spoke with Marcelo the other day and his friends told
him what was said on the Internet and he kind of blew it off.
DF: Really? You know, if he wants to brush it off, that's fine.
All they have to do is apologize for the way they acted. Either
that or let's just settle it like men. If they can't apologize
like a man, admit that you made a mistake and that you were wrong
then let's just fight like men.
FCF: Have you had any offers
from any promoters?
DF: No, just Cal Cooper calling and maybe doing it in Georga
or some place else, but they haven't come with any strong money
offer or anything. I guess the promoter, I don't even know his
name
he's the one who put on the fight between Maurice Smith
and Conan [World Extreme Fighting promoter]. I guess he figures
that I'm not as big a name as Maurice Smith. He figures that
I'm just a middle of the road fighter, so he doesn't want to
get involved with me. [laughs]
FCF: Last month, Dan Severn
wrote a piece that appeared in the last issue of FCF [October
1999 issue] stating how Shamrock is "spouting off"
and you had to come and throw in your "two cents."
What do you have to say about that?
DF: I respect Dan a lot and I respect his opinion. I grew up
watching Dan wrestle and Dan was a great fighter.
FCF: Do you take any offense
to his comments about you throwing in your two cents?
DF: No, like I said, Dan's a great fighter. I'm glad that he
is still fighting out there, somewhere. I didn't know and I'm
sure a lot of NHB fans weren't aware that Dan was still active.
I'm glad that there's a venue for Dan to compete in.
FCF: Have you spoken with
Dan since then?
DF: No. [laughs]
FCF: In the piece, Severn
also said he would like to fight in an 8-man tournament including
only former UFC champions, something that you suggested in our
last discussion. Would you be up for that?
DF: Sure, I would be up for that. Dan made a good point of
having the past champions come together, unfortunately Dan wants
people to take a drug test. What does he want to do, win the
thing by default? [laughs]
FCF: Anything else you
would like to add?
DF: No. Marcelo should accept the opportunity that I'm giving
him to fight me or he can call me up and apologize for the actions
and conduct of his people. If he's in charge of his people,
he should be responsible for everything they do and say.
FCF: Thanks for taking
some time out for me.
DF: Allright brother.
FCF: Nice talking to you
again.
DF: Thank you brother. |
