Ironheart Crown Middleweight Champion: Steve Berger
by Chris Onzuka

FCF: I'm in the locker room with the Ironheart Crown Middleweight Champ, Steve Berger. The guy who was in probably the two most exciting fights of the night. What were your plans going into the fight, during, and after the fight, because at the weigh-ins you said that you didn't care what belt the guy that you were going to fight was, you just wanted to fight?
Steve Berger: In the beginning, I knew Shoney was tough. I knew I had to respect him. He has a lot of wins under his belt. He had a very tough fight with Pat Miletich. It was just my coach and faith in my training partners. You know, I train with some of the toughest fighters around. I think I got the best coach [Rickson Gracie black belt Rodrigo Vaghi] in the mid-west, or anywhere for that manner. He basically told me to stay calm and [that I] got the tools to beat them, [he said] "you're better stand-up, you're better on the ground." And it ended up being that way. Of course it wasn't an easy match, neither of them were. They were both great fighters, but overall listening to him [Trainer Vaghi] and training with the toughest guys around is what brought me the victory tonight.

FCF: Tell us about your last match. You would gain a position, then get reversed, gain another position then get reversed, constantly countering each other. Did you ever get fustrated or discouraged in that match?
SB: No, when we train, we train for two hours. He [Vaghi] will take me and put me in the middle when I have a fight. He will put these guys on my back and I'll go from there, so I'm pretty confident that I will be able to get out of certain positions like that just because of our training. I felt a little stronger than him [Jason Glabus], with Shoney, it was a different story. He felt really strong and he had good hip control. But with Jason, I just felt stronger, when I got him down, I just opted for the points, punch, punch, punch.

FCF: Did you have a strategy going into fight Jason?
SB: No, at least I was able to study Shoney, there was tapes on him. But Jason, I didn't know anything about. But they had told me that he was really good with the knees and his stand-up was pretty good. I think once we exchanged some punches, he just wanted to get in close and it looked like he wanted to take me down after a few shots. I'm pretty very confident in my stand-up. I also box. My whole strategy was to go out there see who was better in the stand-up, if he was better, then I would take it to the ground. If I was better, I figure he would take it to the ground. And that's the way it worked out.

FCF: What's up next for you?
SB: No, I fought two weeks ago, in a boxing match. I fought a freestyle fight before that and another freestyle fight before. [laughs] So I planned on fighting in this and taking November off. I have another boxing match in December and then in January, I'm going to fight in SFC. But for right now, I'm just going to enjoy myself and let my body heal.

FCF: Thanks for the interview.
SB: Thank you.
