SHOXC IN REVIEW: NOONS KNOCKS OUT BERTO

Showtime has gone a long way to build up its ShoBox series to progress the sport of boxing and with promoter Gary Shaw standing behind EliteXC, they are hoping to do much of the same with the new ShoXC series that debuted on the premium cable network on Friday night, displaying new talent in the MMA world.

The main event on the card was a lightweight match-up between pro boxer turned MMA fighter KJ Noons and Edson Berto, who has made a name for himself of late with two rapid-fire victories in his EliteXC bouts.

Noons, who was coming off of a loss in his last MMA fight, came out and showed his much improved game by peppering Berto throughout the fight with superior stand-up. Berto’s only real offense in the fight came in the first round when he took the bout to the ground and went for his famous heel hook submission, but Noons escaped and kept the fight standing.

Noons spent much of the fight stalking Berto around the cage trying to engage and when his opponent did shoot, it was Noons who displayed a very good takedown defense.

The second round saw Berto literally gassed on his feet, looking to the time clock several times. Noons tried to get to Berto without overextending himself to avoid a takedown and landed numerous body shots along the way.

In the third round, Berto shot in one final time trying to take Noons down, but instead caught a vicious knee strike to the head that put him on the canvas. The San Diego based fighter pounced on Berto and landed a couple more shots before the referee stopped the action and KJ Noons was handed the victory.

With the win, Noons gets back on the winning track and proves that his MMA game is still improving and he should be another top star in the EliteXC lightweight division.

The proposed title unification bout between the Gladiator Challenge and King of the Cage promotions went by the wayside when KOTC champion Aaron Weatherspoon had a last minute medical problem and had to drop out leaving GC champion Jeremiah Metcalf without an opponent. Current Gladiator Challenge middleweight champ Jamie Jara stepped up on short notice and fought Metcalf at a catch weight of 175 pounds.

Metcalf, despite being the smaller fighter, looked dominant early, landing multiple combinations that caught Jara time and time again. It seemed as if Metcalf was all but in complete control when Jara unloaded a huge left hand that put his opponent on the mat. Jara followed up with another strike before the referee stopped the bout and the Gladiator Challenge middleweight champion scored the win, even after taking the fight just the day before.

Scott Jorgenson and Chris David showcased the 135 lb. bantamweight division on the debut edition of ShoXC. Jorgenson looked like the more well rounded fighter landing some stiff shots throughout the fight, but David was able to withstand basically all of the punishment in the bout.

Jorgenson had the biggest highlight of the fight when he picked David up, walked him back to his corner and slammed him down in a thunderous fashion that brought the crowd alive. When it was all said and done, Scott Jorgenson walked away with a unanimous decision victory over Chris David.

Aaron Rosa, who was hyped throughout the fight as one of Tito Ortiz’s training partners, took on Brazilian Top Team member Jefferson “Tanque” Silva in a light heavyweight bout that should also get Fight of the Night honors.

Rosa was quick to take the fight to the ground, anxious to avoid the stand-up skills of Silva early on. The Brazilian did close in on an armbar from his guard, but Rosa defended effectively and instead reversed position and trapped Silva’s arm in a crucifix position and started to reign down punches and elbows.

It looked like Silva was in considerable pain from the strikes, but he managed to wiggle free and eventually worked for position taking Rosa’s back late in the round. After trying a weak submission attempt, Rosa reversed Silva and this time hit down with some heavy shots that rocked the Brazilian Top Team member as the round ended.

Silva remained on the mat after the bell unable to continue and Aaron Rosa picked up the victory in the light heavyweight match-up.

In the opening bout of the evening, Muhssin Corbbrey defeated Lee Gibson by unanimous decision in an uninspiring match-up between two lightweight fighters.

ShoXC will give a place for new faces in MMA to get seen for the first time on television, but many of the participants on the debut edition fought without much intensity and almost never with a sense of urgency.

In future editions of this series, hopefully fight fans will be treated to more bouts where the fighters are truly fighting to prove they belong on television and see it as an opportunity of a lifetime.

PAUL DALEY VS. NICK DIAZ?

There has been confusion of late surrounding Paul Daley and where he will be fighting next... will Daley be fighting Nick Diaz in Elite XC, or will Daley be fighting Mark Weir in Cage Rage?

Daley himself stated following Cage Rage 22 that he was offered Jake Shields or Nick Diaz, Shields then dropped out of the mix and Daley confirmed that he would be step up to fight Diaz for the 160lbs title. With Diaz announcing that he will be taking part in the September 15th show and Daley already being booked for the 22nd of September in Cage Rage, something didn’t add up.

“I originally had my hopes quite high about flying to Hawaii when I read the Diaz piece, but everything is straight now and I won’t be fighting Diaz on the 15th of September” stated Daley clarifying that he won’t be Diaz’s opponent for this date, but he didn’t rule out fighting him in the future. "I will be fighting on the November Elite XC show as a prelude to Diaz, after that it’s me and Diaz for the belt”. Before Daley runs riot stateside again he has his hands full with a Muay Thai fight coming up in Nottingham on Saturday and obviously the challenge of Pride/UFC veteran Mark Weir to deal with at Cage Rage.

Weir for his part will have his hands full as well before meeting Daley as he will be fighting Nick Thompson for the Bodog Welterweight title on August 19th – putting him just outside of the 30 day fight-break period in operation between organizations here in the UK, so providing he remains uninjured after the fight with Thompson, he will face another war against Daley for the belt – back to back title shots for the Wizard… talk about having a tough month.

Be sure to check out the video interview with Daley in the members section.

SOKOUDJOU NOT SIGNING WITH ELITE XC

The stable of fighters now in official free agency after the Zuffa buyout of Pride continues to grow on almost a daily basis. Now, one of the most sought light heavyweight prizes on the market, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, will not be signing with Elite XC as many had thought going into the Shamrock/Baroni pay-per-view that was produced by EliteXC and Strikeforce last month.

According to Elite XC president Gary Shaw, the deal was basically done as of that event but now Sokoudjou will not be coming to Elite XC. Shaw said,"We thought we had Sokoudjou signed and he pulled a 180 on us. So, at this time, he is off the table with EliteXC."

Apparently, Elite XC brought Sokoudjou in as a special guest for that event and was treated as such before, during and after the show but then according to Shaw, the fighter pulled out of the deal when another offer came across the table.

"We gave him a very good offer. We flew him in at the last moment to our June 22 pay-per-view fight in San Jose. He was there as our guest. He ate very well. We filled him with beverages and then supposedly when he went back, someone threw an astronomical offer at him that I was not willing to match," stated Shaw.

Shaw did not speak to specifics as to which organization made the offer, although reports are that K-1 Hero's was in the bidding the services of Sokoudjou, who is the #6 light heavyweight in the MMAWeekly World MMA Rankings.

Elite XC has recently announced that fighters like Nick Diaz and Robbie Lawler will be fighting for the organization but unfortunately Sokoudjou, who made one of the biggest debuts in 2007 with wins over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Ricardo Arona, will not be fighting for them for the time being.

MARK COLEMAN READY FOR RETURN TO UFC

Mark Coleman, a fighter that first stepped foot in the UFC Octagon more than a decade ago, may not go down as one of the more dominating fighters in MMA history, but he surely will always be a significant piece of the puzzle. If not for his pioneering ground and pound style that led him to two UFC tournament championships, a win over Dan Severn to become the first UFC heavyweight beltholder, and capturing the first Pride Grand Prix title, the current MMA landscape may not be dominated by heavyweight enigma Fedor Emelianenko.

With an 4-4 record in his past eight bouts, including two losses to Fedor, Coleman hasn’t maintained the influence of the early days of his career, but he hasn’t hung up the gloves yet. In fact, he still has two fights left on his current Pride contract and with the buyout of that organization by Zuffa, it sounds as if Coleman sees a possible return to his old stomping grounds in the near future.

"I've always wanted to get back in that cage and I always knew I'd get back in there at least one more time. That's were I got started. I like the cage and I like the UFC rules better anyways,” said Coleman, obviously in reference to the brutal forearms and elbows he was so famous for. "I can be more effective in the cage than I was in the ring."

In a recent interview with MMAWeekly’s Scott Petersen, Coleman expounded upon a possible return to the Octagon and his desire to do so.

Saying, “I’m still improving” and “on any given day, victory is within your grasp,” Coleman believes that a fight with current UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture would be a good match-up for him.

It could be argued that Couture has been more relevant to today’s mixed martial arts’ scene, but looking at the fight on paper they are roughly the same age, currently have identical 15-8 professional records, started their MMA careers in the UFC within a year of each other, and come from strong wrestling backgrounds. With the strong name recognition of each, it might be a fight that a segment of fans would want to see, although Coleman would likely have to take another fight in the UFC first. And that is all banking on the fact that Zuffa is willing bring him back to the Octagon.

Interestingly, Coleman is also the subject of a new movie that is readying for production. Entitled “The Smashing Machine,” the same as the movie about his friend Mark Kerr, it sounds as if Jean-Claude Van Damme could be portraying the former UFC and Pride champion… an “interesting” choice that Coleman even seems to find odd.

THIAGO TAVARES CONFIRMS FIGHT WITH TYSON GRIFFIN

Undefeated lightweight Thiago Tavares confirmed that he will face Tyson Griffin at UFC 76 in Anaheim, Calif. Tavares made many new fans in his last outing, displaying his impressive ground prowess en route to defeating Jason Black via triangle choke. Now the Brazilian prospect will face arguably his toughest opponent to date in Griffin.

”He's [Griffin] a great fighter and very complete. He's very strong and doesn’t make a lot of mistakes in his fights. I believe it will be a great fight for MMA fans,” said the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo black belt. ”My training is going very well. I'm training boxing and Muay Thai; I want to show the American people that my Muay Thai is as good as my Jiu-Jitsu.”

Following their recent championship bout, Hermes Franca and Sean Sherk tested positive for steroids. The news shocked many fans and caused a bit of uncertainty in the busy UFC 155-pound weight class. ”It's difficult for me to give an opinion about it because I've never used this kind of substance,” commented Tavares. “If it's forbidden to use something like that and an athlete uses it, he must be penalized. I believe that with due penalty, the use of these drugs will reduce.”

The UFC lightweight division is the deepest it has ever been. A win over Tyson Griffin could put Tavares into title contention.

”I have won twice in UFC and hopefully this will be my third. I personally feel that I'm able to win the title. Depending on my next fight, I think there may be a chance. I would be very honored to fight for the title.”

IS THERE ANYTHING GINA CARANO CAN'T DO?

Women’s mixed martial arts is continuing to grow with the support of organizations like EliteXC and Bodog Fight putting them on the main stage and showing that they can throw down just as ably as the men can. While many may argue who is the best fighter in women’s MMA, no one can argue that Gina Carano is by far the most popular and she is back training full time, preparing for her return to the cage on Sept. 15 at the EliteXC show in Hawaii.

Gina has been popping up all over the place including on the Oxygen network reality show “Fight Girls” which has garnered much attention of late, showing women training and fighting in Muay Thai kickboxing with the chance to compete in Thailand later in the season. Gina serves as one of the coaches and trainers on the show, working along side her long time Muay Thai coach, Master Toddy.

“It’s a different position for me, mentoring and coaching fighters,” said Carano about her experience on the show. “I feel like I’m just up and coming myself so I don’t really feel that qualified to give that much advice, but I just tried to be there for those girls emotionally and give them a few pointers here and there. But it was really a huge learning experience for me and all the girls took to it really well.”

Despite her modesty, Carano brings a feverish pace to the show, teaching and coaching the girls to victory, while still learning the sport along the way.

While fighting is her primary focus, fans have also had the pleasure of seeing Gina doing commentary on the recent EliteXC internet broadcast of the prelim fights for the Shamrock/Baroni pay-per-view.

Again, Gina stayed modest when the subject came up in a recent interview with MMAWeekly Radio, but she received great reviews by fans and critics alike.

“Whenever I was commentating I would just freeze up and get quiet and shy, and I really am just a shy person naturally, so its really hard for me to do interviews and stuff, but to put me in that commentating position I was really proud of myself, but it was hard,” said Carano about her commentating experience.

Gina awaits her time to fight again. She was originally scheduled to be a part of the Shamrock/Baroni show, but when she traveled to Thailand with the “Fight Girls” show she came back sick and wasn’t able to compete at her highest level, so she pushed back the fight.

“I actually went to see the WEC fight and I was standing there and all of a sudden the whole room started going dark on me and I was like ‘wow they’re dimming the lights’ and then my body started giving way and I just realized that I got really dehydrated,” said Carano about her sickness. “I got back from Thailand and jumped right back into training and I was sick. I got sick half way through that trip and traveling like that and I got stomach flu. Things like that happen and I wanted to play it smart and I felt like me and Julie (Kedzie) put on such a good show last time that I didn’t want to go out there and not give it my all because I wasn’t physically capable to, so I thought I’d just make a good decision there and pull out of that fight.”

Since that time, Gina has made a move to train her mixed martial arts game at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, one of the best training centers in the U.S., run by UFC heavyweight champion and MMA legend, Randy “The Natural” Couture. It was meeting Randy at her last fight in EliteXC that prompted the move for Gina to the new gym.

“For my last fight in Mississippi against Julie, Randy Couture came in and sat down next to me and was like ‘you know why we do this right?’ and I was like yeah and he said ‘so have fun out there,’” said Carano. “And just that little pre-fight pep talk and I have so much respect for him as a person and as a fighter so that just made me feel good mentally in myself to go out there. So for my next fight, I was like who would I like to train with and who would be my ideal training person to look up to and I thought of Randy Couture.”

With a team like Xtreme Couture behind her and her Muay Thai coach Master Toddy always by her side, it seems as if the sky’s the limit for Gina Carano. Recently, Gary Shaw had some very complimentary things to say about the newest star in EliteXC and apparently fans can expect to see her in that organization for a long time to come.

“Gina’s future is bright. She signed a multi-year contract with us,” stated EliteXC president Gary Shaw. “I know her personally and her family as well. She is a good person inside and out, pretty person inside and out, and she can really fight. We said from the beginning we were going to make her the face of MMA, and Showtime, to Ken Hershman's credit, took a leap of faith in both myself and in Gina and decided at the last minute to put her on (the main card) in February. It was done in the press conference upstairs when Gina was doing a photo shoot with other athletes, and I said to Ken, ‘Come on, let's try it.’ He met her and he green lighted it there. Really, it is a combination. Without Ken Hershman green lighting a woman's card, which was a huge leap of faith, trust me, nobody would know Gina Carano today. She would be somebody from Reno and lives in Las Vegas. She is a very, very important asset to EliteXC.”

Now with EliteXC behind her and she is back to being healthy, the opponent is the next order of business for Gina Carano, but right now that is still up in the air.

“I’m still kind of waiting on it,” said Carano about her next fight. “I guess Jan Finney and Shayna Baszler are fighting this weekend on the internet card for EliteXC [Baszler won the fight by arm bar] so I might fight the winner of them or I might fight somebody else, I’m not quite sure yet.”

One thing fans can be sure of is that Gina Carano will be a force for women’s mixed martial arts now and in the future.

NOONS WANTS TO HOLD BOXING AND MMA BELTS SIMULTANEOUSLY
Press Release

K.J. NOONS WANTS TO BECOME FIRST FIGHTER TO HOLD MMA AND BOXING BELTS SIMULTANEOUSLY

He Faces Stiff MMA Test Against Edson Berto In Main Event; Premiere Telecast of ShoXC Airs Live This Friday on SHOWTIME

LOS ANGELES – After suffering a shocking defeat to “Krazy Horse’’ Charles Bennett in the first-ever Mixed Martial Arts fight shown on premium television (SHOWTIME), K.J. Noons, of San Diego, Calif., was determined to return to action as quickly as possible.

When Noons came back, four months later, however, it was not in a cage or a hexagon. It was in a ring – a boxing ring.

Talk about a true fighter.

A May Thai specialist, Noons is a highly regarded up-and-comer in MMA with a 3-1 record. He has won numerous awards during his career, including nominations as Pride Fighting Championships Best Striker and is a former ISKA and Art of War champion.

But Noons also is a promising prizefighter with a record of 7-1 with five knockouts.

“I just alternate back and forth between boxing and MMA when I train,” he said. “It’s definitely tough. You have to work out twice as hard and twice as much. But this is what I want to do. I want to stay in both and be busy in both for as long as I can, and it is way too early to give up on either.

“My ultimate goal is to win championship belts in MMA and boxing.’’

This Friday, July 27, Noons will make network history again when he faces streaking Edson “Little Tiger’’ Berto of Winter Haven, Fla., in the first-ever edition of ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series on SHOWTIME (live at 11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

The Noons-Berto fight is scheduled for three, 5-minute rounds.

In the co-feature of an exciting two-hour telecast that will feature up to five bouts at Chumash Resort Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif., Aaron Wetherspoon of Irvine, Calif., will face local favorite Jeremiah Metcalf of Santa Ynez in a King of the Cage/Gladiator Challenge welterweight championship unification match (five, 5-minute rounds).

“I think this new ShoXC series is just great,” Noons said. “It is just like ShoBox except instead of young boxers it will focus on young talent in MMA. It gives guys like me a chance to showcase their skills on national television and get a little time to spend in the limelight.’’

Like its boxing predecessor, ShoBox, the mission of the ShoXC series is to pit young fighters against quality opposition in tough, crowd-pleasing and competitive matches.

SHOXC: ELITE CHALLENGER SERIES – JULY 27, 2007

For sure, Noons has been matched extremely tough in his return to the MMA cage in the 155-pound fight.

The always well-conditioned Berto has won 11 consecutive ultimate fighting competition fights. He won 10 in a row in Real Fighting Combat (RFC), including a title victory at 155 pounds in 2006.

In his last start, the older brother of undefeated welterweight boxer Andre Berto scored a shocking 47-second, first-round submission victory over Victor “Joe Boxer’’ Valenzuela on the undercard of “Shamrock Vs. Baroni” on June 22, 2007, in San Jose, Calif. on SHOWTIME® PPV.

Berto, who came in on a few days' notice as a late replacement for the incarcerated Bennett, submitted Valenzuela with a perfectly executed heel hook.

“Berto has a great all-around game and is on a roll,” Noons said. “This will not be any easy fight by any means. It is a perfect ShoXC fight between two young guys. I know I will have to be at my best to beat him.’’

Noons’ fight with “Krazy Horse” on Feb. 10, 2007, on SHOWTIME ended in devastating and sudden fashion. During one of many exchanges early in the fight, a “Krazy Horse” right hook landed squarely on Noons’ chin. Noons went down and “Krazy Horse’’ pounced on him, prompting the referee to stop the bout.

“I was really disappointed and discouraged for a while, but mostly I was just mad at myself,” Noons said. “I don’t make excuses. ‘Krazy’ definitely caught me with a good shot.

“But I was too hesitant in there. Then, I made an even bigger mistake. I got caught up with the crowd, who I could tell were anxious for more action. So I tried to make something happen. Instead, I got caught.

“Every fighter loses, but it is what they do after a loss that counts. A loss like I had definitely challenges a fighter’s character. Do they get back up on their feet and get on the right track? Do they use it as a learning experience, or do they mope around?

“The good thing about MMA as opposed to boxing is that one loss doesn’t destroy you. In MMA, you can be a .500 fighter and still be a threat.’’

Noons’ last pro boxing start came on June 1, 2007, at Chumash. He registered a lopsided six-round decision, winning all the rounds on all the scorecards.

“I was really happy to get that fight out of the way,’’ said Noons, who will become the first fighter to participate in both a boxing and MMA match at Chumash. “Usually before a fight I am calm, but I was a little jittery before that one. But I concentrated on keeping my hands held high so I wouldn’t get caught and after a few rounds I was fine.’’

ShoXC will air regularly on Saturday nights -- following the Friday premiere -- and will feature fighters from all over the world. In the debut episode, matches will take place in a 20’ x 22’ foot hexagon cage. MMA fights on other ShoXC telecasts may take place in a cage or a ring.

In other fights on the ShoXC debut card on Friday, Jefferson “Tank’’ Silva (3-1) faces Aaron Rosa (8-0) in a 170-pound match (three, 5-minute rounds); Chris David (8-5-1) meets Scott Jorgenson (3-1) in a 135-pound bout (three, 5-minute rounds) and Muhsin Corbbrey (4-2) opposes Lee Gibson (10-2) in a 155-round contest (three, 5-minute rounds).

Up to six additional fights on Friday will be streamed live on the Internet (www.ProElite.com) immediately following the telecast.

Report: Takanori Gomi headed to HERO’s

So sayeth Daily News in Japan. An offer made and an offer likely to be accepted. Gomi and Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto are expected to appear at an All Japan Beach-Wrestling contest on the 29th. That ends any discussion of Gomi heading to UFC.

A couple of days ago, I alluded to an upcoming interview in GONKAKU magazine with Dana White (where he was talking about the future of PRIDE). Well, according to Dana in another interview (with Kamipro), he is frustrated with the negotiations he has had so far with Japanese television stations about getting PRIDE on free-to-air TV. White says he’s frustrated that he can’t get PRIDE on Japanese TV even with new ownership. The funny thing is that UFC does not have a television contract for a free-to-air show, yet expected to get one for PRIDE. Dana stated that HERO’s is Japan’s #2 brand, while PRIDE is still Japan’s #1 brand. He really said this.

At the end of the interview, White stressed that PRIDE FC Worldwide LLC is “a clean company” and asked the Japanese fans to engage in a letter-writing campaign to the free-to-air TV networks to bring on PRIDE programming. This does not sound like a confident man. What’s the word I’m looking for? Clueless.

PULVER TALKS WEC AND FEATHERWEIGHT DIVISION
by Jeff Cain

Former UFC lightweight champion Jens 'Little Evil' Pulver makes the move from the UFC to the WEC and from the lightweight division to the featherweight division on September 5, when he takes on Cub Swanson at WEC 30 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Pulver spoke with MMAWeekly about the transition and the state of the WEC featherweight division.

Jens has competed against larger opponents most of his fighting career. Returning to a weight class that better suits his size, Pulver said, "I'm extremely excited. Like I said, I had a good time down there. I had some great fights at 143 in Shooto. When I'm in shape I walk around at 151 - 152 pounds, so I'm excited. More than anything I'm just excited to fight again. Coming off that last fight I just want to get back in there. Of course at 145, that's my natural weight. I wrestled at 141 and 135 in high school, so I'm just a little dude. I'm just going to have to accept it...I want to go to 145 and focus on some other things. I want to fight whoever they put in front of me. I want to go after the title, and see what happens from there."

To go after the title, Jens will have to defeat the reigning WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber. Asked about Urijah, Jens answered, "I think Faber's great. I think he's done a phenomenal job as far as a champion, as an ambassador for 145 pounds. I think he's the perfect man for the job, but I'm going to do down there now, and I'm going to help the ambassador for 145 pounds. I've always wanted to take care of the little guys. I want to make sure they have a future, and I want to make sure that people get a chance to see them. I want those guys to be showcased, and the WEC has definitely, I think that so far one of their front weights is 145. To go down there and help, you know, Dana White and Joe Silva and Monte Cox all said yeah you can fight in the WEC. I was like perfect. Let's do it. I just want to go down and do my part and help build another weight class, my natural weight class."

Pulver added, "I definitely think I can help. I don't know if it's maybe because I'm old, or maybe because I was a world champion at 155, but I think it adds, I don't really want to call it legitimacy because it's not a pompous thing. It's not trying to be cocky, but on the same token it's almost like now look at this. It's blowing up. It's arriving. It's getting some UFC fighters going, now they can go down to their weight at 145 when they were small fighters at 155. They don't want to be a minor league. The WEC is not a minor league. It's a legitimate top contending show. I mean it's got great fighters in there, and at 145 these guys want to go out there and get after it. They understand the pressure. They know what's going on. They've got to sell the excitement. They've got to be able to stop each other. They've got to be able to flip around. People expect a lot more out of them. They don't want to see any laying and praying, and heavy man titty slapping when they're tired. It's going to be a lot of pressure, but I'm absolutely excited to be a part of it. I think Urijah was a great champion, still a great champion. [Jeff] Curran's down there. I think there's a lot of tough 145 pounders that people don't know about and all of a sudden they're going to see a flood of them. I think there's a great amount of 135 pounders people never got to see or know about. They're going to see a flood of them. This is going to explode. There's a lot of little guys, and they've been waiting for a moment like this."

When anyone talks about 145 pound fighters in the world 'Kid' Yamamoto is always mentioned. When questioned about 'Kid,' Jens responded, "Yamamoto, he's the real deal, and when people, when they get a chance to see what this kid's done in the highlight reel, they're going to be just utterly blown away. I mean I'm still blown away by the 4 second run across the ring, throw a flying knee, just stays in stride and walks to the corner raising his hand. He turns around the guy's unconscious...People have no idea what they're about to witness when they see this guy...There's going to be some amazing fights coming here real soon at 145."

Draculino oks Wand’s coaching
Team Hurricane met at Chute Boxe

The star Wanderlei Silva wasted no time and became the first captain of the MTL to gather his team, the Hurricane, last Wednsday, at Chute Boxe, in Curitiba. And his first conversation with them as "coach" was all it took to win over the group.

“Wanderlei has always been very correct about things from the beginning, telling the athletes of team Hurricane, right up front, that they should prepare for the event training with their masters, who have known them well for many years," raved Vinicius Draculino, instructor of Rafael Sapo, world champion blue belt and one of the most promising fighters of the event.

Very satisfied with the draft of teams and the name of his, Wand also took the chance to exalt the athletes of team Hurricane, as Draculino states. “We are here to talk and get to know each other, of course,” said Wand. “But for example I am not going to give ground pointers to Sapo, who learns Jiu-Jitsu from a guy like Draculino.”

To not start off the job at hand with just talk, the star of Chute Boxe led a great training session. Murilo Bustamante’s team, Wild Fire, should beware when the two teams meet on August 11, at the MTL’s opening event in São Paulo…

Anacondas Looking to End Silverbacks Run
by Scott Holmes

Ask any championship caliber coach how he got his team to battle through the playoffs for a title and they usually say something along the lines of "we peaked at the right time." When I discussed the upcoming IFL playoffs with Silverback's coach Pat Miletich, he said the same thing about his squad and what it would take for them to get to the finals. He should know, his team peaked at the right time and won the whole thing last year.

If it's all about momentum and peaking, the Los Angeles Anacondas ended the '07 regular season like Dolly Parton on speed skates. They went 3-0 against other teams and lead the league in individual wins as well. In fact, the only team to give them any real trouble was Miletich's Silverbacks, although they were able to squeak out a victory in their February showdown.

It's been smooth sailing for the west coast team until now. Two of their top fighters, Chris Horodecki and Jay Hieron, will not be suiting up for the semi-final match. Horodecki broke his hand during his epic June slugfest with Seattle's Shad Lierly and Hieron suffered a recent training injury that will keep him out of action.

With two of their major weapons missing, Coach Shawn Tompkins will have to hope his two substitutes -- lightweight Adam DiSabato and welterweight Chris Clements -- are able to contribute to the IFL's number one seeded team. Anaconda stalwarts Benji Radach, Alex Schoenauer and Krzysztof Soszynski will need to take the playoff leadership reigns if Tompkins gang wants to take a crack at the IFL team title.

The only problem with that scenario is that Schoenauer and Soszynski will be facing opponents that beat them in the last L.A.-Quad Cities meeting. With Mike Ciesnolevicz and Ben Rothwell both on their way to the IFL's all-star grand prix later this year, it could be a tough order to fulfill.

Miletich's Silverbacks won't be sending out their starting five either. Ryan McGivern had to bow due to marital plans. With McGivern off getting hitched, Gerald Harris, who was plucked from Matt Lindland's Portland Wolfpack will take his place on the Quad Cities' roster.

Originally, Miletich wanted to get Robbie Lawler to fill-in but an injury while filming The Ultimate Fighter 5 reality show kept him from entertaining the offer. Harris has one prior IFL fight, a close split-decision loss to Fabio Leopoldo, so he's no pushover.

"I told Matt I owe him one to say the least," said Miletich in regards to the philanthropy of Lindland.

The Anacondas coach didn't seem to be phased by the changes in his line-up. To cover the loss of Horodecki and Hieron he's added standout collegiate wrestler Adam DiSabato at lightweight and a heavy handed Chris Clements to face Rory Markham in the welterweight bout.

"We've got Andrew DiSabato who is a fighter that has trained with me before off and on," said a confident Tompkins. "I know of him very well and I'm very comfortable with him taking Chris's [Horodecki] spot at this time."

Tompkins also kept things positive in discussing Clements IFL debut.

"He's 25-2 in professional Thai boxing, he's wrestled for about 16 years and he also holds the fastest knock out in MMA at 3 seconds," explained the Anaconda's coach. "He's a real tough kid and, you know, I think it's a nice time to introduce him into the IFL."

Pat Miletich also weighed in on the lineup changes. The coach of the defending IFL champs lamented the fact that his lightweight would not get a chance to avenge his controversial loss from February while acknowledging the threat the Anaconda's replacements could impose.

"Everyone would have loved to have seen Palaszewski and Horodecki in a rematch, I think the Hieron/Markham fight obviously was going to have incredible fireworks…but the kid [Chris Clements] stepping in for Hieron is very tough, very good stand up fighter and he knows Rory likes to bang so that fight's going to be exciting either way."

While the Anacondas have been cruising along, with all of these changes the wheels very well may fall off. While they may not say it, the Silverbacks have to like the timing of the Anaconda's injury woes. A move from a slight underdog to perhaps a heavy favorite could be in the cards for the two-time champs.

It will still come down to each fight and both coaches know that their future lies in their team's own hands.

"I've put together, once again, one of the best training camps," said Tompkins. "I brought in some really good training partners for them this time. You know I've made an investment in time and finance for this because I don't think anyone can question the Anacondas, we want those rings."

Next week we will look at the second semi-final match up between the Tokyo Sabres and the New York Pitbulls. We will also discuss the pending announcement the IFL's Grand Prix participants.

News Release – Island Promotions

For Immediate Release

Eugene, Oregon (July 28, 2007): Rise Fighting Championship (RFC) will bring hot Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) action to northwest fans this summer.

MMA brings the best of all martial arts into the same ring and is rapidly gaining popularity as an international sport. Combining striking from boxing and Muay Thai disciplines, takedowns from Judo and Russian Sambo, and ground techniques from wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitus, MMA is changing the world of martial arts and ring sport.

“Bragging Rights,” the event theme, will feature national-level fights between Harris Sarmiento and Enoch Wilson and Andy Lukesh and Dave Moreno. During the last RFC event, Sarmeinto and Wilson faced off in the ring, with Sarmiento challenging Wilson to fight him on the feet. Wilson said he would oblige at Bragging Rights.

Fighting out of 808 Fight Factory (Honolulu, HI) Harris Sarmiento carries a 20-15-0 (win-loss-draw) professional record and likes to end his fight by knockout. Known for his outstanding standup game and solid takedown defense, Sarmiento has faced elite competition throughout his accomplished career, including wars against Nick Diaz (Ultimate Fighting Championships -- UFC -- and Pride veteran), Rob McCullough (current World Extreme Cagefighting -- WEC -- lightweight champion), K. J. Noons (Elite XC veteran) and Roger Huerta (recently showcased on the cover of Sports Illustrated and current UFC fighter). Highlights of his career include a tournament win in the eight-fighter tourney at Rumble on the Rock (Honolulu, HI 2005). He currently trains with Ronald Jhun and Falaniko Vitale (UFC veterans).

Facing off against Sarmiento will be Northwest's own, Enoch Wilson. Wilson, fighting out of Oregon Jiu Jitsu (Tigard, OR), brings a professional record of 8-4-1 into his fight with Sarmiento. His strength is on the ground, but he is a fighter that is more than willing to fight on his feet. Known for his fast-paced action in both the cage and ring, Wilson has fought John Gunderson (Bend, OR), Ian Loveland (Gresham, OR), and Urijah Faber (current WEC featherweigh t champion). Wilson has been featured on MSNBC's Warrior Nation.

With a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and currently fighting out of Penn MMA (Hilo, HI), Dave Moreno (4-2) is known for his conditioning and ending fights with submissions on the ground. Although he just recently turned pro, Moreno has fought against elite competition. Currently working on his standup skills with Rudy Valentino, Moreno looks to bring a rounded game to his match against Andy Lukesh.

Andy Lukesh (2-1), also recently turning pro, brings a solid ground game into his match with Moreno. Training out of Impact Jiu Jitsu (Beaverton, OR), Lukesh comes from a wrestling background and holds a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In his last professional fight at RFC, Lukesh dominated Moreno's teammate, Donald Gonzales, and looks to do the same against Moreno.

Rise Fighting Championship is quickly establishing itself as the premier MMA event in the Pacific Northwest. All fights are held in a ring, and fights are competitive and exciting. RFC focuses on exciting matches, showcasing fighters, and making fighters accessible to fight fans.

Fighter weigh ins will take place at 12 pm on the 27th of July at the Lane County Fairgrounds and will be open to the media. Media access to fighters will follow after the weigh ins.

Sherdog VS. Dana White

Dear Dana,

We have a problem.

Not sure if you recall, but I broached the subject of steroids with you way back when, well before we faced the reality that mixed martial artists are the Robert Downey Jr.'s of the sporting world.

You said drug testing of any kind wasn't your responsibility; it was up to the state regulators.

OK, well, that's fine I guess, as long as you're diligent in promoting your product in locales that independently test for both so-called performance-enhancers and drugs of abuse. But then again, it's not really good enough, is it? There is a lot more MMA out there than what's being promoted by Zuffa, right?

Either way, you went to Texas several months ago and it turned out they don't test. Neither does any regulatory body in the UK, which you've gone to twice and are returning again in September.

(Oops, the UFC tested guys in Belfast. What were those results? Don't quite remember seeing ‘em anywhere.)

It seems, from a distance mind you, that you're passing the buck, which is puzzling considering the control you exert over everything else that has to do with the UFC brand.

I know you said the "UFC fully supports the commission's efforts and we will continue to take the measures that keep this sport clean and keep the athletes safe." At first glance, that seems like the status quo. And if I understand correctly, when it comes to making sure your athletes aren't defrauding the public and holding hostage the integrity of this still fledgling sport, you want to leave that to someone else.

You don't let anyone refill toilet paper in the bathroom stalls of your Las Vegas offices without signing off first.

What's different here Dana?

Maybe the pending perception battle doesn't bother you so much. I mean, after experiencing the joy of spending millions of dollars to change how most Americans view the UFC and MMA, you've got to want to do that again, I'm sure.

The fact that fighters can't stop themselves from taking a bong rip before their Doritos-caked hands jab a needle into their ass … that isn't a call to arms?

I'm not saying this is your fault. That dishonor clearly resides with fighters that place the integrity of the sport on the line every time they step in a cage or ring.

However, UFC is the major stakeholder in MMA and as such, you need to do something. If not, be prepared to sit before congress and answer the questions of an angry Senator who possesses a large vocabulary and sharp tongue. There are discussions that it might happen with pro-wrestling. Why MMA would be any different, I don't know.

I've heard you mention a potential UFC-sponsored seminar designed to educate fighters. But in what? They don't know commissions -- well not in Texas -- are all over this stuff? Sure … education will definitely fix the problem, but only if you believe the majority of these tests are false positives from over-the-counter supplements. (And knowing what happened to Nathan Marquardt, you always have to be a bit suspicious -- see what screwing up will do to the way you're viewed.)

Really, you could have much more influence as a difference maker doing something you excel at: putting square pegs in round holes.

Being a f---ing fighter, Dana, isn't just about wearing Afflication t-shirts and brawling in the cage. It's about what you do in the gym; what you do on the street; how you conduct yourself as a professional.

Had Renato Sobra been a fullback in the NFL, he would likely face suspension and the prospect of adding his name to a really bad book after being arrested last week. Instead, he's fighting on Aug. 25 with seemingly no questions asked.

Why aren't you holding your athletes accountable? (Again, you're not the only one. EliteXC [they're another promoter, Dana] did everything it could to get Charles Bennett (Pictures) out of jail so he could fight.)

Unfortunately, it seems for every Dan Henderson there are 10 guys on the opposite end of the spectrum.

This is about more than cheaters and a fair playing field. This is about the truth of your product, and by pretty obvious extension, the sport. You promoted a lightweight title fight in which both guys tested positive for steroids. One said he did it; the other appears to be appealing.

Well, I'm appealing to you here.

You like to recall the tale of how you came into MMA and saved everyone. It was your money, no one else's. It was your work, no one else's. It was your guts. Your blood.

So, then, is it not your responsibility to lift this current carnival of a sport onto your shoulders and carry it to a place where we can actually discuss Sean Sherk versus B.J. Penn instead of The Muscle Shark's nandrolone levels?

With all that's on the line, for you not to recognize that the UFC needs to be the industry leader and aggressively go about stamping out drugs in MMA boggles the mind.

Let me offer a suggestion if I can be so bold.

I know your company propagated the message that Zuffa changed MMA by bringing in new rules that cleaned up the sport. (Pay no attention to the fact that the SEG-era UFC promoted a regulated show in New Jersey when you still were tasked with getting sponsors for Tito Ortiz shorts.

Here's an opportunity to actually do something you can rightfully take credit for:

Dana, clean up mixed martial arts.

Josh Gross
Executive Editor - Sherdog.com

Dana Responds:
My response to idiot Gross:

Its funny how when bad things happen, you love to call me out and say that I need to jump in and fix it. All the positive things that Zuffa has done over the past 6 years and you write me an open letter telling me to fix the problem of fighters using steroids? You are the biggest idiot I have ever met in this industry. Josh "holier than now" Gross writes a letter full of insults and sarcasm about what my company and I have accomplished since buying the UFC- like it was some easy chore. This is the same scumbag who released the finalists of TUF season 4 before it even aired. Josh, before you start trying to fix my company, worry about the potential lying, corruptions and inaccuracies at your own shitty website.

To all the fighters out there that fight for me or another promotion: these fan boy websites come kissing your ass when they want to shoot video of you or get an interview so they can make money off you. But when you make a mistake, they will be right there to kick your teeth down your throat. One of the great things that has happened over the past 6 years is that real media covers us now. So when these fan boy self proclaimed MMA websites want to do video interviews or any other kind of interview to make themselves money tell them to stop calling you and leave you alone. They are not doing you any favors- they are making money off of you. I have not let Sherdog into a UFC event in years. And the UFC is doing just fine.

Anyway, back to steroids- every athlete on this planet knows what's going on with steroids right now and we make it very clear what the athletic commission will do to them if they are caught. In fact, to my knowledge, athletes competing in combative sports are the only ones in the world who get drug tested by the government, that's a pretty high standard to meet. Imagine if every NBA, MLB or NFL athlete was drug tested by the government every time they competed? That's a very high standard yet UFC fighters face government drug testing every time they enter the Octagon.

Everyone knows that it hurts me and my company badly when one of my fighters tests positive for steroids. Listen Josh "save the whales" Gross- I can't save the world by myself. So roll your boss back into the ocean and write a letter "Attention all promoters." When your product is human beings, there are always going to be problems and nothing is ever going to be perfect.

Gross, you have no clue the stuff I deal with on a daily basis with fighters. Myself and the UFC are adamantly opposed to the use of steroids or any other kind of drugs. Most of these guys that fight in the UFC are my friends and I care about them. My job isn't to smash them publicly and ruin their lives. Apparently, that's your job. My job is to help them through whatever problems they might have- professional or personal.

I don't know if anyone has ever seen Josh Gross but the guy has never done anything athletic in his entire life. And you only have to see Jeff Sherwood and his staff to know the same thing about them. These people don't know the first thing about the demands and challenges that professional athletes are faced with. I have my own opinion of Sherdog and Gross and how they run their business but I don't write open letters to the public about it. So for these goofy supposed fan boy clowns to sit around and write letters about what I need to do with my company and my athletes is fucking hilarious.

You guys just keep selling DVDs and chasing my guys around for video interviews so you can make more money and keep eating and I will handle the UFC and it's fighters.

CAGE RAGE: PRO ELITE NEW INVESTOR
By Stash Capar

The UK’s premiere fight promotion Cage Rage is under renovation.

Majority shareholder and multi-millionaire John Faraday has sold his stake in the organization, and a new investor, America’s Pro Elite, has stepped in, according to Cage Rage promoter Andy Geer.

“Yes, John Faraday has left,” says Geer. “Pro Elite’s now with us, and they’re investing heavily in different areas.”

While an “alliance” between Pro Elite, Cage Rage, Japan’s K-1, Korea’s Spirit MC, and pay premium cable channel Showtime was announced on March 28, the partnership between Cage Rage and Pro Elite is on a far more palpable level. With Pro Elite purportedly now owning a share of Cage Rage, Geer says fans should expect to see changes to the London-based promotion.

“We [Andy Geer and Dave O’Donnell] are still running the show,” says Geer. “At present there is no finished deal, but one of our priorities will be working with their [Pro Elite’s] TV contacts to improve the quality of our broadcasts.”

Established in 2006, Pro Elite Inc. burst onto the international fight scene in 2007 with its first live event on Feb. 10 under its own EliteXC brand, broadcasted under an exclusive agreement with Showtime in the U.S. and on The Fight Network in Canada. Pro Elite teamed with thriving San Jose, Calif. promotion Strikeforce for another event June 22, and plans the first in a series of “ShoXC” events with the cable channel July 27. Pro Elite has also reached various distribution deals with existing promotions, including Icon Sport and Cage Rage, streaming recent fight events for free on the Internet. In recent weeks, Pro Elite has been heavily rumoured in negotiations with Icon Sport and King of the Cage for potential acquisition.

Earlier this year, Cage Rage signed a contract with Sky Sports, making the fight promotion the only British product on free live television, broadcasting events to millions of potential viewers.

In addition to broadcast upgrades, the two organizations will participate in fighter exchanges as early as next year, says Geer.

“All in all this partnership with Pro Elite will help our brand grow,” says O’Donnell. “It’ll help us become one of the world leaders in MMA - it’s a great time for Cage Rage and our sport in general.”

This purported merger comes at an opportune time for Cage Rage, with London quickly becoming the battle zone between the homegrown organization and the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The world’s top MMA franchise has held two events in the UK this year already, with Sept. 8’s UFC 75 on route to breaking attendance records at the 23 thousand-seat O2 Arena in London.

“I have no comment at all,” said Pro Elite spokesman and Elite XC President of Live Events Gary Shaw. “Cage Rage can say what they want, but I am the president of a publicly-traded company and thus can not comment at this time.”

Faraday refrained from comment as well.

CRO COP TRAINS W/ BONJASKY AND YVEL FOR KONGO

Cro Cop brings in Remi Bonjanski and Gilbert Yvel to prepare for Kongo.

From http://www.vecernji.hr/newsroom/sports/more/1778600/index.do
(Translated by Mario Cuzic)

After a Shocking loss to Gabriel Gonzaga the strongest Croatian wants to honor his UFC contract so those who gave him $2.4 million for six fights would never regret that decision. Cro Cop has four fights left on his contract and the next will be in England against French striker Cheick Kongo.

To fully understand his opponent Mirko has brought in K-1 champion Remi Bonjanski and excellent striker Gilbert Yvel. Joining them will also be legendary Thai boxing master Ivan Hippolyte.

Mirko says, "I've decided to train harder on my stand up , 80%, and 20% on takedown defense. Ground fighting was very important so I neglected Thai boxing. That is why now I'll be training with the best standup fighter."

Cro Cop will train with a man who knows Kongo well and had defeated him three years ago. However, Kongo is a better fighter than he was then. Boyanski, a specialist in stand up fighting and a master with knees and kicks will prepare Cro Cop for the task ahead.

A new element to Mirko's training will be the cage, which he has added to his gym in Croatia. "The cage will be a little smaller than the UFC octagon because those dimentions won't fit im my gym. It will however be an octagon. I must in the future train in the cage because the cage is not like the ring." explained Mirko.

What’s happening in the world of mixed martial arts now …
By Brian Knapp

Pro Elite CEO Doug DeLuca declined to comment during a media conference call Tuesday on reports his company was in
the process of acquiring Icon Sport and King of the Cage and had already purchased significant interest in the Cage Rage promotion.

The Fight Network QUOTED two Cage Rage promoters Tuesday who confirmed majority shareholder John Faraday had sold his stake in the company.

The conference call was held in anticipation of the debut of “ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series,” a mixed martial arts series featuring up-and-coming talent on the premium cable network Showtime. The series will premiere at 11 PM Friday, July 27 from the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif. “ShowXC” follows the lead of the network’s critically acclaimed boxing series “ShowBox: The New Generation.”

Other items of interest from the conference call included:

Icon Sport middleweight champion Robbie Lawler and EliteXC middleweight title holder Murilo Rua will likely square off for Rua’s 185-pound crown at the Sept. 15 EliteXC event in Hawaii. Gary Shaw, EliteXC president of live events, stressed that the fight had not been finalized. “Bout agreements have not been signed yet,” Shaw said;

• Former UFC welterweight contender Nick Diaz is also expected to debut for EliteXC at the Sept. 15 event. No opponent has been named for the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. Diaz is currently serving a six-month Nevada State Athletic Commission suspension after he tested positive for suspected marijuana use in February;

• “ShoXC” shows will be held in August, October and December, according to Shaw. An EliteXC event will be held in November and will be carried on Showtime;

• As many as six bouts on the July 27 “ShoXC” card, including the main event between lightweights K.J. Noons and Edson Berto, will be televised on Showtime. The remaining fights will be streamed live on Proelite.com;

• Though he did not mention the promotion by name, Shaw appeared to direct several verbal barbs at the UFC during the conference call. “It’s unfortunate that, if you want to see the best fights, you have to give [them] $44.95 or $39.95. That will hurt MMA. That’s not something we want to do [with EliteXC]. To make people pay every month is unfair. Without the fan, you have nothing,” Shaw said;

• Shaw addressed the recent rash of positive steroids tests in MMA, which included UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk and the legendary Royce Gracie. “It can hurt the sport, but it’s going to hurt the individual a lot more,” Shaw said. “Steroids cannot have a place in the sport of MMA. Sooner or later, we’ll have a repeat offender, and it will be a career-ending decision.” Shaw said he did not anticipate EliteXC conducting steroid testing independent of state commissions;

• Shaw admitted he believed he had light heavyweight contender Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou signed, sealed and delivered to EliteXC. He claimed Sokoudjou “pulled a 180” and was now “off the table” for EliteXC;

• Concerned with weight cutting in MMA, Shaw revealed his intention to establish a 160-pound division within EliteXC in order to help bridge the gap between the lightweight, welterweight and middleweight divisions. He also indicated he believed there was a place for lighter weight classes in MMA. “If you have two great fighters at 125 pounds who fight like hell, we want to bring that to you,” Shaw said;

• EliteXC remains interested in signing middleweight Frank Trigg, according to Shaw;

• Shaw said MMA fans could expect to see cooperation between EliteXC and other MMA promotions in the months and years ahead. “We’re here to grow the sport,” Shaw said.

After serving a six month suspension for a positive marijuana test that saw his last victory over current #1 lightweight fighter Takanori Gomi erased,
Nick Diaz will return to fighting on September 15th for Elite XC at their show in Hawaii as announced today by Gary Shaw.

Diaz defeated Gomi in one of the most exciting fights thus far in 2007 using the rarely used gogo-plata, but after the positive test, the Nevada State Athletic Commission changed the result of the win to a no contest and since that time Diaz has been waiting to return to active competition.

He recently called out StrikeForce middleweight champion Frank Shamrock for a match-up at 185lbs but Elite XC President Gary Shaw confirmed that Diaz will return in September at 160lbs.

Shaw confirmed that the organization will not shy away from having different and lighter weight classes to display their fighter’s talents so as of now Diaz will be fighting at 160lbs instead of 155lbs.

Shaw also confirmed that when Diaz fought Gomi he was under contract with Elite XC but the organization gave him permission to fight Gomi. Shaw believes that he wants his fighters to get the best fights in the world, no matter where that is.

As of now, no opponent has been named to face Diaz but the entire card for the September 15th show should be announced shortly.

IFL WORLD GRAND-PRIX UPDATE

IFL Confirms Grand-Prix Fights
By FCF Staff

The International Fight League announced today the fights and dates for the promotion’s upcoming 2007 World Grand-Prix. The event will be a step away from team competition for the league, as instead, the winner of each individual fight will move on to the tournament’s next round. The semi-finals (first round) will be held November 3rd, at the Sears Centre in Chicago, Illinois, with the finals taking place December 2nd, at the Mohegan Suns Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut .

The athletes that were selected to compete in the tournament were the top four fighters in each of the IFL’s 5 weight classes. This was determined by the fighter’s records during this year’s team competition. According to the IFL release;

“In the event of a tie, competitors with the fastest finishes or best strength of victories earned the higher seeds. The winners then defend their individual belts throughout the 2008 IFL season (dates and locations TBA).”

Based on the level of talent on both the Anacondas and Silverback squads, it should be of little surprise that both teams have the most fighters competing in the tournament, with 4 and 3 respectively. The Dragons, Sabres and Lions have two fighters participating, while the rest of the IFL clubs all are sending one fighter.

Here are the opening round match-ups for the semi-finals November 3rd.

Minotouro debut a success
The Brazilian beats Trinidad and Tobago
rep by 17 to 2

The 22kg weight difference did not overwhelm Rogerio Minotouro in his debut boxing at the Pan-American games in Rio de Janeiro. He dominated the entire battle, as the MMA star gave Enog Romeo, the 116kg, left-handed representative of Trinidad and Tobago a drubbing.

With the win, Minotouro made it through to the quarter finals and will return to the Riocentro Sports Complex on Monday, when he will face the left-handed Venezuelan Jonny Molina. "It was good to debut like this. I hope to repeat the good performance," said Minotouro after the triumph.

SHERK RELEASES STATEMENT

UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk issued a statement addressing the positive test for Nandrolone following his July 7, title defense against Hermes Franca. In the statement Sherk maintained his innocence.

"At the present time I cannot explain the positive drug test in Sacramento California. I know I have never used any steroids or any other banned substances, I am investigating possible causes of my positive test with my attorney. I have never cheated, all of my success has come from hard work and dedication to my sport."

Sherk's appeal will go in front of the California State Athletic Commission on August 6, at 10am. Sherk has retained Howard Jacobs to represent him in connection with those charges.

The meeting is open to the media and the general public. Scheduled to appeal their steroid violations: Wes Combs, Danny Batchelder, James Toney, Phil Baroni, Hermes Franca and Sean Sherk

Hong-Man Choi is also scheduled to appeal his license denial.

PODE PEGAR! NEWS FROM BRAZIL

Silva Moving to the U.S.

Wanderlei Silva will be moving to the U.S. in the next few weeks. It seems that the former Pride Light Heavyweight Champion is looking for a change in his career.

Wanderlei established a good relationship with Randy Couture when they met to open Couture’s new Camp. Silva received an invitation from the UFC Heavyweight Champion to train with him in the future.

It’s important to mention that Wanderlei’s move to the U.S. does not mean he’s leaving Chute Boxe. In fact, Silva plans on opening the doors to potential new Chute Boxe athletes. "I want to make new paths to Chute Boxe athletes, I want to give them the opportunity I had to make money with the sport," said the former champion. Wanderlei Silva is a great fighter and a great person. Hopefully he can find what he is looking for.

Shogun is Ready.

Pride 2005 Middleweight Grand Prix Champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua is ready. Despite rumors that the Chute Boxe star would face Ryoto Machida in his UFC debut, the Curitiba, Brazil resident will meet Ultimate Fighter winner Forrest Griffin and fans are getting excited. Sporting a new hairdo, Mauricio has been training very hard in preparation for his anticipated fight.

Rua trains Vale-Tudo every single day from 9:00a.m. to 12:30p.m. After lunch, “Shogun” works on his wrestling for almost two hours under the tutelage of national class wrestler Cristopher Led. Finally, Royler Gracie’s Jiu-Jitsu black belt Cristiano Marcello finishes Mauricio’s day with two hours of Jiu-Jitsu training.

Shogun stated that he is amazed with the treatment he has received from UFC. Rua went on to say that he had not received this kind of reception even in Pride.

The Spider

Anderson Silva is proving that he is one of the most dangerous strikers in the sport. Some people may not know that Anderson came from a boxing background. He started very young in Sao Paulo training in boxing and later he moved to Curitiba where he began to train in Muay Thai. Shortly after, Silva started competing in Muay Thai fights during the height of Vale Tudo’s popularity and was a very tough contender for any fighter.

In his last fight against Nathan Marquardt, Anderson needed only one round to prove he is the greatest 185-pound fighter in the UFC. According to Brazilian fans, Anderson would make an excellent opponent for Paulo Filho. We already know that they are very close friends and have publicly stated that they wouldn’t fight each other. However, fans like to see a good fight so we’ll have to wait and see.

Ninja to Face Robbie Lawler

After claiming the vacant EliteXC Middleweight title, Murilo Rua will probably make the first defense of his belt against Miletich fighter Robbie Lawler on September 15th in Hawaii. "I know that Lawler has an excellent stand up game, and I am prepared to face him in a stand up game or a ground game," stated Rua.

Just like Wanderlei Silva, "Ninja" will make the move to the U.S by the end of the year. "I want to move to U.S and open a Chute Boxe camp and it will happen this year".

Andre Dida Shines in Japan

Chute Boxe’s 155-pound prospect Andre Dida made his second appearance in a Hero’s ring against previously undefeated wrestler Artur Oumakhanov. The Russian didn’t seem to respect Dida’s superior striking and paid the price. Dida finished his opponent at 1:20 into the first round. Andre was originally scheduled to face Gesias Calvancanti in the first round of the K-1 Hero’s 155-pound Grand Prix. Unfortunately, “JZ” suffered a hand injury during his last fight against Masato. According to K-1, Calvancanti will receive a bye into the second round of the tournament. Although Dida lost his spot in the tournament, there’s a possibility he could face the defending Grand Prix Champion in the second round.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira - Minotouro in Pan American Boxing

“Minotouro” debuted in the Pan American Boxing super heavyweight division (over 205 lb) last Saturday against Trinidad and Tobago’s Enoch Romeo. The Pride veteran defeated Romeo by points, 17 to 2. Nogueira fought again Monday and earned another win via points (18 to 6) over Jonny Molina, from Venezuela. “It was a tough fight, strong punches, but I could keep the distance and I was able to turn up the fight,” said Nogueira. Next Wednesday, Nogueira will face Cuban Boxer Robert Alfonso in the semi-final.

MTL – “The Brazilian IFL”

The IFL team concept has caught on in Brazil and it involves some of the most respected names in the sport including Wanderlei Silva, Murilo Bustamante, Pedro Rizzo and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. The veteran fighters are the first four captains of the MTL.

Unlike the IFL, the league the captains wont fight each other, they will only train their pupils and prepare them to face their opponents. This week Wanderlei Silva and Murilo Bustamante were in their respective cities (Curitiba and Rio de Janeiro) along with their teams in preparation for the first MTL event on August 11th. Take a look at the lineup between Wanderlei Silva’s Hurricanes and Murilo Bustamante’s Wild Fires:

Silva’ Hurricanes (Curitiba) vs. Bustamante’s Wild Fires (Rio de Janeiro):

- 155 lb: Ocimar Costa vs. Luciano Azevedo
- 170 lb: Flavio Alvaro vs. Gerson Conceicao
- 185 lb: Rafael Sapo vs. Silmar Rodrigo
- 205lb: Rafael Monteiro vs. Alexandre Cacareco
- 265 lb: Andre Mussi vs. Joaquim Mamute

NICK DIAZ TO RETURN SEPTEMBER 15TH IN ELITE XC

After serving a six month suspension for a positive marijuana test that saw his last victory over current #1 lightweight fighter Takanori Gomi erased, Nick Diaz will return to fighting on September 15th for
Elite XC at their show in Hawaii as announced today by Gary Shaw.

Diaz defeated Gomi in one of the most exciting fights thus far in 2007 using the rarely used gogo-plata, but after the positive test, the Nevada State Athletic Commission changed the result of the win to a no contest and since that time Diaz has been waiting to return to active competition.

DRUGS IN MMA PART 2: THE NUMBERS DON'T LIE

In the first part of MMAWeekly’s series on the drug problem in MMA, we looked at the staggering number of fighters who continue to test positive, the growing sanctions by state athletic commissions, and with the possibility of MMA promotions starting to crack down on the fighters who do test positive.

With the revelation on Thursday that both Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca, the participants in the recent lightweight title fight at UFC 73, tested positive for steroids, the numbers continue to grow of high profile MMA participants who are falling back on drugs as a part of their training or recovery to prepare for fights.

In a prepared statement given to MMAWeekly on Thursday, Franca stated, “At this point I was desperate and needed anything I could to get my injury as close to healing as possible and be able to recover from the daily training regimen I was going through. I made the shortsighted choice to hopefully accelerate the healing process and allow me to keep training. Under the pressure of literally not being able to pay next months bills I made a choice. I had to fight and did whatever I could to do so.”

Franca and Sherk are just the most recent in an alarming trend of MMA fighters testing positive for drugs and recently the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) made available the numbers for fighters who have tested positive for illegal drugs from March 31st to July 6 (with Sherk and Franca’s positive tests now being added as well) from all combat sports in the state including mixed martial arts, boxing and kickboxing.

In this report released by the CSAC, it revealed that from 3/31 to 7/6 that mixed martial arts had 20 fighters come back with positive drug tests of some sort, with that number now jumping to 22 with Sherk and Franca. During the same time boxing came back with 5 positive tests and kickboxing had 2 fighters come back with positive drug tests.

Even more alarming than the high number of mixed martial arts fighters coming back with positive tests are the comparisons with boxing when it comes down to the total number of events held in the state and the number of events where fighters were tested. In the reported time period, the state of California had 40 boxing events to 26 MMA events. Of these events, the state tested fighters in 28 of the boxing events and they tested in 17 of the MMA events.

So out of the 17 events that mixed martial arts held in the state of California from March 31st to July 6th, a total of 20 fighters came back with positive tests, while boxing had 28 events where the commission tested fighters and only 5 came back with positive results. The ratio of fighters testing positive in MMA is on the rise and the tests prove this fact.

Also in this report, the state revealed that there were a total of 9 positive steroid tests (11 now with Sherk and Franca) and 17 with drugs of abuse (marijuana, cocaine, etc). 2 additional results were listed with 1 being an adulterated test (the fighter submitting the test altered it with tap water as confirmed by the lab) and 1 result where the fighter refused to take the testing. This trend of fighters coming back with positive tests cannot be ignored much longer.

The longer suspensions are starting to show up and with Sherk and Franca both testing positive with this most recent UFC, the organizations have to see the potential danger involved in letting this trend continue without making major policy changes. With the organizations being privately owned for the most part, they can institute any rules or contract changes that may affect fighter pay or compensation but as of yet, nothing like this has been handed down publicly from any MMA organization.

Within the last two months alone, we’ve seen high profile fighters like Sherk, Franca, Royce Gracie, and Phil Baroni all come back with positive tests, and something needs to change soon before this black eye attracts a government interjection or a sanctioning body like an athletic commission demanding changes before licenses are issued.

Only time will tell when or if these changes will happen. In the meantime, MMA fans everywhere continue to be disappointed by the results they are seeing.

NEW SEASON OF TAPOUT BEGINS AUG. 1ST
KICKING ASS AND MAKING NAMES, THE TAPOUT CREW
CONTINUES THEIR SEARCH TO FIND THE NEXT MMA SUPERSTAR
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1 AT 10 P.M. ET/PT ONLY ON VERSUS

Los Angeles, CA. - From the producers of American Chopper and Dirty Jobs, the VERSUS original series TapouT follows Mask, Punkass and Skyskrape-the crew behind the premier mixed martial arts clothing and gear line TapouT-on their cross country travels in search of the next MMA superstar. After a great series debut in June- which included three episodes and saw a 140 percent increase in household impressions for the time period average-all new episodes featuring the bad boys of MMA will premiere on VERSUS Wednesdays beginning August 1st at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Traveling around the country in a tricked out tour bus, the crew is on the hunt to discover a fighter who has what it takes to represent the TapouT label; and before these up and comers fight their way out of the cage, they have to fight to their way in with the TapouT crew. The crew bonds with their fighter testing out his personality, and in between the usual TapouT mayhem makes sure their new protégé gets the proper training before the big fight. In each episode, it's all on the line in the dramatic conclusion as each fighter gets one shot to impress the crew and show off his skills in the cage.

"With this original reality series and our live World Extreme Cagefighting events, we are closer to our goal of becoming a top destination for the best mixed martial arts programming on television," said Marc Fein, Senior Vice President of Programming and Production for VERSUS. "The uncompromising quality of our fights and original productions is what differentiates VERSUS from other networks."

The TapouT brand is Mask's-"The General" of the crew-creation. His 'inyaface' attitude and no-nonsense approach are the basis of the TapouT world and a favorite of fans. Whether it's prepping fighters or meeting fans, Mask is one of the most recognizable personalities in the combat sports world from the Las Vegas strip to the streets of New York City. Punk Ass is the strong, silent type with the entrepreneurial mind-he's all business, all the time. He's the tough guy in any neighborhood he decides to make his own. Skyskrape is the clown of the crew and is always decked out in outrageous wigs, costumes and sarcasm and he gets the crowd energized and pumped for every event.

"In mainstream clothing and television, TapouT is completely new on the scene. It's the new guy against the big Greats. There is something about the new guy that believes he's meant to do GREAT things!" Character and TapouT creator Mask believes in the solid partnership with VERSUS.

IFL TO START DRUG TESTING

The commissioner of the IFL, Kurt Otto, is a very busy man. He and his partner Gareb Shamus have single-handedly started up the first team mixed martial arts promotion in America. In the IFL's short tenure, they have put on fantastic shows and have built up some terrific fighters. The list of coaches they have on their roster are all pioneers or current superstars in mixed martial arts. They have coaches such as Ken Shamrock, Pat Miletich, Maurice Smith, Marco Ruas, Renzo Gracie, Matt Lindland, Frank Shamrock and Dan Henderson to name a few.

While the UFC is the premier promotion in MMA, Otto doesn't agree with some of the business practices of the UFC. Hermes Franca released a statement to MMAWeekly last week explaining his use of steroids. In a nutshell, Hermes explained that he was injured prior to his fight with Sean Sherk. According to his account, he called the UFC to let them know, and they told him it would be tough to push the fight back. Franca explained that he needs to fight in order to feed his family. “I think the sitution with Hermes is sad. He called and they said that they had a show to put on. In our organization, if you're injured, you still get paid and someone will step up.”

Kurt Otto has also been busy with some big plans for the IFL in the upcoming months. After the semi-finals next weekend, he announced some upcoming plans for the IFL including the participants in the IFL Grand Prix.

A rematch many fans have been clamoring for is between Chris Horodecki and Bart Palaszewski. Their last fight was a candidate for fight of the year. Both put it all on the line, but Horodecki walked away with a split decision. Kurt Otto talked with MMAWeekly about a possible rematch. “Do you think we'd want to put that fight on? It would be smart of us to do that. I'm not gonna let our fans down.”

Next week, the four semi-finalist teams will be fighting to secure their place in the finals. The Sabres led by Ken Yasuda will take on Renzo Gracie's Pitbulls. In the other bracket, what could possibly be the most anticipated team match up this season, Sean Tompkins' Anacondas will take on Pat Miletich's Silverbacks. Even with Chris Horodecki and Jay Hieron missing for the lineup, it's sure to be a barn burner. “This is the four best teams we have in the entire organization,” exclaimed Otto.

The most interesting news that came from Kurt Otto is his soon-to-be-announcement of the new steroid policy that will be instituted in 2008. “In '08, we are going to start testing,” Otto said. “Fortunately, we haven't had an issue. In '08, we are implementing a pretty cool system, that will be enforced. It's pretty cool.”

While the details are sketchy, the steroid policy will probably be a little more on the extreme side. Otto didn't allow any specific details, but he did explain the basics. “I'm going to be announcing the full program and how it's gonna work. It's something we're gonna be taking extremely serious. It's no fooling around. It's pretty much zero tolerance.”

The whole MMA scene has been crazy the past week after Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca had tested positive for steroids. Kurt Otto had his own opinions on this. “In football, I can see a lineman doing it. But not in this sport. You need to be lean and mean, and it's not helping anyone.”

JORGE MASVIDAL TALKS WIN OVER YVES

Jorge Masvidal defeated Yves Edwards at BodogFight in Trenton, New Jersey on July 14th. Masvidal spoke with MMAWeekly about the fight and his Internet fame from his two fights with 'Ray,' a Kimbo Slice endorsed underground fighter in Miami, Florida.

Breaking down his BodogFight match against Yves Edwards, Jorge said, "Yves came out at a hard pace. Me, I like to counter punch, it just naturally comes to me. Yves was bringing it. He was throwing a couple of kicks. He didn't hit me in the face I don't think once in the first round, but he was throwing the kicks. He was throwing a couple of good body shots too. I was just waiting, waiting, just picking him a part, trying to get his timing down and see which way he was moving. The second round my corner told me to do something and that something happened. Now I've got another victory under my belt."

Masvidal has some impressive wins over the likes of Joe Lauzon, Keith Wisniewski, and now Yves Edwards. Asked if Yves Edwards was his biggest win to date, Jorge answered, "Yes and no. I know Yves had come off a loss or two. Yves is still a big name, but I was just performing, just another fight. I just train hard. I trained harder for this fight than any other fight of course, but I was just hoping to get by this fight, you know, and hoping I just get another fight. I know a lot of people have been saying Yves has been on the downhill because he has lost a couple of fights, but I still think he's a good fighter."

Masvidal suffered one injury during the fight, but it didn't affect his performance. He explained, "I had one injury, my foot man. It still looks like a football right now. I kicked him in the leg in the first round and it immediately swelled up...The final kick, the head kick was with the same foot, so it got even more swollen. I'll be back in like a week, I'll be back at the gym. I'll be running and doing my roadwork and stuff."

Jorge has gained Internet fame for his participation in a couple of underground fights shown on youtube.com and sublimedirectory.com against one of Kimbo Slice's stable street fighters 'Ray." When questioned about the underground, bare knuckle bouts, Jorge responded, "That wasn't me. That was my cousin. He looks like me. That wasn't me man. [laughs] That was my cousin. That wasn't me man. That was a long time ago before I was a professional. I'm from Miami and Kimbo is from Miami. The opportunity came, and I wasn't taking a pro fight. I was thinking, you know what, I'll do one of these fights to see if I'm ready, and I took the fight. It worked out well."

He added, "I didn't get paid a penny. I don't know if other people didn't get paid, but I just took it as more of an experience. Like I said, that was a long time ago before I was a professional. I didn't get paid anything for that."

Now a professional fighter, Masvidal takes his fighting career seriously and will not be participating in any unsanctioned fight. In response to being asked if he'd ever do another underground fight, Jorge stated, "Not unless I want to get my license revoked. I definitely won't be taking part in any of that...I won't be doing that anymore."

CATCHING UP WITH DENIS KANG

Today was a good day. While waiting to interview Denis Kang, I was treated to the latest installment of Spirit MC: Amateur League. There were 33 matches with special rules between a lot of young guys and some old ones. Amateur League is the in-house program that allows new fighters to cut their teeth with little risk of injury. Contestants wear boxing gloves with headgear, forearm, elbow, shin, and knee pads. There are no stomps, soccer kicks, knees on the ground, and fighters are not allowed to close guard. Entertaining and almost as safe as a pillow fight.

MMA Weekly: How are the hand and bicep doing?
Kang: 100% I’m doing everything at 100%

MMA Weekly: How has the training been going?
Kang: I have been going as good as I feel. It’s difficult for me not to train hard. I love to train hard. I have been training with my teammates preparing them for their fights. When I get confirmation for my next fight I will take one week off and hit it hard again.

MMA Weekly: Have you been training with anyone that isn’t from American Top Team?
Kang: I trained with Todd Gouwenberg in Vancouver.

MMA Weekly: Can you tell us anything new about your status as a free agent?
Kang: I have been talking with Bodog and Gary Shaw. I still don’t know. I can’t say anything.

MMA Weekly: Who do you feel is #1 in the world at 185 lbs.?
Kang: Dan Henderson is #1.

MMA Weekly: Where do you rank yourself in the world?
Kang: I don’t want to seem biased. (laughs) I’m #2. Seriously, I strongly believe that. I think I can be #1 when I get a chance to prove it like Dan did.

MMA Weekly: Who do you want to fight next? Do you want to fight Misaki again?
Kang: My first choice would be Henderson. My second choice would be Misaki. That was one of my hardest fights ever. (He shows me his contorted bicep. I believe him)

MMA Weekly: How did you tear your bicep against Gono?
Kang: I threw a right hook and my first thought, when I felt it, was…I punched him too hard.

MMA Weekly: Did you ever have a fight with someone that you didn’t like?
Kang: My rematch with Andrei Semenov. He was cocky, always trying to stare me down. During the fighter presentations before the PRIDE show he was just standing there and staring at me.

MMA Weekly: Who is your favorite fighter to watch?
Kang: Fedor, Minotauro, and B.J. Penn are all my favorites. Every time I watch them I learn. It might not be a new move but I always pick up something like a grip or a small technique. I’m a student of the game. Every training session has a purpose, to make me a better fighter.

MMA Weekly: Who is your favorite Korean fighter?
Kang: Haeng-ki Kim. He’s got a good style, real aggressive and ready to scrap.

MMA Weekly: What do you think about the growth of MMA in Korea?
Kang: MMA has gotten huge over here. Like now we’re watching these young guys fighting hard in an amateur show. At first, my dad didn’t even know about MMA. Then, I came back and it was a little more popular. Now, everyone knows about it, there are schools everywhere. I think it’s because of Spirit MC. They know they have to grow fighters. Do they do it just for the money? Hell no. They want to make the fighters better.

MMA Weekly: What do you think about the fighters that have tested positive for steroid use lately?
Kang: I think if they take steroids they’re old enough to know what will happen. You know you are going to be tested.

MMA Weekly: What have you been doing with your free time lately?
Kang: Free time? (laughs, hard) I’m training all the time. I do hang out with the guys from ATT. We go clubbing and go to the beach sometimes. I went to the Miss Hawaiian Tropic pageant. That was awesome, we were like V.I.P.s. I even got to meet Mickey Rourke.

Garden Island Cage Match 6: Caged Fury
Hanapepe Stadium, Hanapepe, Kauai, Hawaii
July 21, 2007
By Chris Onzuka -
Chris@Onzuka.com

Kauai fight fans weathered passing showers and a few last minute drop outs to an exciting night of fights under the stars of the Garden Island. Kauai's fighters pitted themselves against fighters from Oahu and Washington. Charlie Pearson brought three fighters from his C3 gym in Seattle and walked away with a 2-1 record. Sally Krumdiak absorbed Sherri Ephan's hard kicks to the body and worked her way inside to chop down Ephan for the TKO. Keoni Bryant is a freight train that gets better in every aspect in every single fight, especially his submissions. This is his second straight submission victory in Kauai. The fight of the night was Ron Verdadero and Casey Daniels, who exchanged right hooks for all three rounds. Both fighters took turns landing hard punches right on the chin. Verdadero through the tighter hooks, where Daniels swung with a wide over hand right. Both fighters also fought back after being stunned, but Verdadero looked to land a few more damaging blows edging him out the decision. The GICM Featherweight champ, Buck Bisbey capitalized on an over zealous Chico Cantiberos to work his way to the mount and unload on Cantiberos in a non-title bout. The other co-main event featured the experienced Landon Showalter taking on the Eastsidaz's Kimo Woelfel. Woelfel was a juggernaut and threw hard punches the whole fight. Showalter featured crisp round house kicks and elbows, but Woelfel kept up a ton of pressure and pounded Showalter's body and head with vicious left upper cuts. The next event is planned for March 2008 and promised a stacked card that will feature the rematch of current champion, Buck Bisbey and Kauai's own Eben Kaneshiro.

ORTIZ TALKS RASHAD AND REMATCH

The 'Huntington Beach Bad Boy' Tito Ortiz spoke with MMAWeekly about his UFC 73 draw against 'Sugar' Rashad Evans, the point deduction for grabbing the fence and the rematch.

"I was just disgusted with myself because I couldn't finish the fight. In the second round I was going for a takedown against the fence and I kind of pulled a little muscle in my back it felt like, and my legs weren't the same after that. I got fatigued a lot quicker than I normally do, and it's just one of those things. It just didn't seem like it was an on night for me. I just didn't feel on. You know? I got to see the fight once and I thought I won the fight. I was dominant. I was aggressive, but I guess fighting in California and being the bad boy, I'm going take as much as I possibly can, and I guess I've got to live up to the moniker of being the Huntington Beach Bad Boy," Ortiz told MMAWeekly.

Asked about any injuries suffered in the fight with Rashad and his physical condition since the fight, Ortiz said, "My back is still bothering me, but my eye healed up fine. The stitches healed up fine. I'm doing good. I'm just kind of waiting for my back to be 100% so I can get back into training and start working out for Rashad and Ortiz 2."

The back injury is reoccurring, and it's an injury Tito has had to deal with for years. Ortiz explained, "It was right before the Randy fight when I got it, and I think I just re-aggravated it again when I fought Rashad. It just seems like it's a nagging injury that will never go away. And people say you've got to suck it up and fight anyways, but I really see it as I couldn't really hang out with my son the last few days the way I wanted to because I was having such back problems. That just reminds me that I am human man. For me to train through this stuff, is it going to hurt me in the future?"

Tito added, "It seems like it doesn't go away. I was able to steer away from it almost all of last year and about in July it got 100% better. I fought three times after that. It felt good when I was fighting Liddell. I had no problems with it, and then probably about a month before this fight I had another bulging disc where I had to go down and get MRIs, ended up injecting kind of like anti inflammatory just for the swelling on my disc so I was able to wrestle again. I went from being bed ridden until three days later being able to wrestle again, being able to run again. It was just one of those things were either I fight or I pull out...I didn't want to let down a lot of fans, so I had to stick with the fight and take a big risk. It was just one of those things man, I was going to fight no matter what...For me, I love fighting. A lot of my fans love seeing me compete, and I want to give them what they want, so I don't want to let them down."

In the opening moments of the fight Ortiz was able to take Evans down, and had Rashad down several times throughout the bout. "I think people think that Rashad is such a great wrestler because he wrestled in college. You've got to win matches, you know, and he's actually a 167 pounder bulking up to be 205, and he's really a smaller guy than people see," commented the former UFC light heavyweight champion.

A point was taken away from Ortiz in the second round for grabbing the fence which led to the fight being ruled a draw. Discussing the draw, Ortiz stated, "It is very frustrating. I just looked at it, I mean in my mind it was a win. It might have been a draw on paper or whatever, but to me I know it was a win. The second time around I'm going to train just as hard. I'm going to do exactly the same things. He knows what I have, and I know what he has, and he doesn't have much. It's a bad match up for him all the way around. I'm excited for the next time around. I could get frustrated over it. I could look at it and I could feel like it was a loss, but it was a win to me. To me, being injured after the second round and still fighting the way I did, it's just one of those things where I just look at it for the future and me and him competing against each other, and my hand is going to be raised. He knows I won. It just plain and simple. All the fans know I won. I guess they're going to get a Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans 2."

Ortiz continued, "Rashad got an even match with me getting a point deducted. I usually, I think there's a warning before they deduct. There was no warning, and Rashad grabbed the fence a few times himself, and he never got a warning. He never got a point taken away from him which I look at it as it's just a way for them to get a rematch. You know? I think they didn't want Rashad to have his first loss, and in my mind I believe that Rashad lost. Rashad knows he lost."

Uncharacteristically for Ortiz, he looked to gas in the third round. Discussing his conditioning, Ortiz said, "I was going like, wow, what the hell? Am I getting older? I mean what is it? I felt good during training, and everything felt great. I had my back injury. That had a little bit to do with it I think. I didn't really feel my legs were as strong as normal, and I started second guessing myself, and that's something that I shouldn't be doing, and the next time I won't be doing. I just seemed like I was always chasing Rashad down. He was like running away from me the whole time. I was trying to chase him down, and he stood his ground a couple of time which I kind of give it to him. The second time around it's going to be a little bit better. I've just got to continue training. I think what kind of hurt me too was taking that seven months off. After I fought Liddell there was this big time lapse where I wasn't doing anything, and I've got to make sure this time around that I stay in the shape I'm in and continue to train and continue to stay in great shape."

During the post-fight press conference Tito and Rashad engaged in a verbal exchange. Questioned about it, Tito answered, "I just came in to do my press part, and he had the balls to say that he beat me, and that I knew that he beat me. I was just like, well, you were lucky you got saved at the end of the second round. Your ass would have been choked out, and you also got saved by a few other things. It was just one of those deals. He went, well you gabbed the fence the whole time, and I was like I grabbed the fence one and got a point taken away. You grabbed the fence four times and didn't get no points taken away. It went back and forth, back and forth. Both of us know there's going to be a rematch. He wants a rematch, and I told him I want a rematch. Dana White said there's going to be a rematch, and we'll bring the fight when it comes. Hopefully this time Rashad won't run away the way he did the first time."

During the same press conference that saw Ortiz and Evans go back and forth with words, it was announced that the two would rematch October 20, in Cincinnati, Ohio but that's not set in stone. Ortiz commented, "I haven't agreed to anything, so I guess it's just a matter of getting the paperwork done and seeing what exactly the time will be for my fight. Me fighting in California, I expected to be in my hometown, and it feels like it's not my hometown. I feel like the visitor every time I fight there. When I fought Forrest [Griffin], when I fought Rashad and with the judges doing what they did. I think the place for me to fight is in Las Vegas. That's my hometown. That's where I feel more comfortable competing at. We'll just see what happens in the future."

FRANK MIR RETURNS AT UFC 74

It was officially announced via the UFC’s website that former heavyweight champion, Frank Mir will make his return to the Octagon in August at UFC 74 when he takes on Antoni Hardonk.

Mir was all set to take on Hardonk back in April at a UFC Fight Night event but the former champion ran into an injury that prevented him from competing and Hardonk ended up taking on Team Punishment member Justin McCully and lost in a decision.

Frank Mir has recently been seen doing color commentary for the WEC in their events but the former champion wants to get back to the forefront of the ever growing UFC heavyweight division. His health has come into question before almost every fight since returning but Mir, when speaking to MMAWeekly Radio, says he’s ready.

“Everything’s really good,” said Mir about his health. “Everything’s as good as can be expected.”

Since returning from a devastating leg injury that kept him out of action for over a year, Mir has struggled to get back to his championship form that saw him submit Tim Sylvia in 2004. Mir has lost 2 out of his last 3 fights and a win over Hardonk is absolutely crucial for him to stay in the heavyweight division that has recently added top talent like Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira amongst others. Mir feels confident about his return this time though.

“Everybody knows my career and accidents happen and I’ve been stumbling along the way ever since,” Mir stated in his interview with MMAWeekly Radio. “I’ve been trying to make sure I get back up on my feet and go strong and have a good showing.”

Antoni Hardonk is currently 1-1 in his UFC career. After debuting and knocking out Sherman Pendergarst at UFC 65, he lost an uninspired decision against the afore mentioned Justin McCully at the UFC Fight Night event in April. Mir knows about Hardonk’s stand-up skill and believes the ground will be the best place to keep this fight.

“He’s dangerous on his feet, he’s an Ernesto Hoost student,” said Mir. “Obviously I want to keep the stand-up with him to a minimum and obviously he’s going to want to keep it to the maximum. I think its going to come down to whoever gets what they want.”

UFC 74 will take place in Las Vegas on August 25th at the Mandalay Bay Events Center

SEFO BATTLES BREGY IN LAS VEGAS SUPERFIGHT

Las Vegas, NV; July 22, 2007….Hard-hitting K-1 superstar and four-time world kickboxing champion, Ray “Sugarfoot” Sefo (61-15-1 (49 KO’s), will take on 2006 K-1 Amsterdam tournament champion, Bjorn Bregy (14-7 (7 KO’s), in a classic K-1 Superfight matchup at Las Vegas, Nevada’s Bellagio on Saturday, August 11th.

Sefo’s start on the “K-1 World Grand Prix 2007 in Las Vegas” mega-fight card is slated to be the 36-year-old New Zealand native’s toughest challenge to date in Las Vegas K-1 action. At 6 feet 8 inches tall and weighing in at approximately 275 pounds, Bregy, a 32-year-old Karate stylist from Switzerland, brings to the table a tremendous size advantage over his opponent, who stands an even 6 feet tall and weighs around 235 pounds.

Last August, Sefo, in his second career appearance in Sin City, faced another Swiss fighter, Azem Maksutaj, in a featured Superfight. From start to finish, Sefo controlled the tempo of the bout, flooring the tenacious Muay Thai stylist a total of five times over the course of three rounds. The fifth knockdown, produced by a sharp Sefo spinning back kick, prompted the referee to stop the bout, giving Sefo the victory by way of technical knockout at the 2:02 mark of the third stanza.

Sefo, a distinguished K-1 competitor for over a decade, reaffirmed his elite status last year by defeating two of the organization’s hottest prospects. In Seoul, Korea last June, it took him less than two minutes to put the lightning quick Ruslan Karaev down for the 10 count with a stunning right hook. During K-1’s annual December finale at Japan’s Tokyo Dome, Sefo schooled the highly-touted Melvin Manhoef, stopping the Dutch heavyweight with a pair of right hands only 40 seconds into their meeting.

A K-1 competitor since 2000, Bregy initiated the best performance of his career by using his hands and long knees to stop Frenchman Freddy Kemayo in the quarterfinal tournament round of the single-elimination affair in Amsterdam on May 13th of last year. In a semifinal round matchup with another French combatant, Naoufal “Iron Leg,” the Swiss fighter did likewise, putting his opponent down for the 10 count with a hard knee strike to the midsection in the second round of battle. Bregy brought the tournament’s championship bout to a close in even more abrupt fashion by putting Holland’s Gokhan Saki flat on the canvas with a left hook to the jaw at the 1:44 mark of the fight’s first round.

Bregy’s conquest of the Amsterdam affair came in the midst of his spectacular seven-fight win streak that spanned from May 20, 2005 through July 30th of last year when, in front of 8,300 fans, he obliterated Japanese contender and fellow Karate player, Tsuyoshi Nakasako, in the opening stanza of a meeting in Sapporo Hokkaido, Japan.

In a second “K-1 World Grand Prix 2007 in Las Vegas” Superfight matchup, two-time K-1 tournament champion and fearsome knockout artist, “Mighty Mo” Siligia (32-5 (26 KO’s), will square off with last April’s K-1 North America tournament victor, Chalid “Die Faust” Arrab (16-6 (3 KO’s).

The “K-1 World Grand Prix 2007 in Las Vegas” card will be headlined by K-1’s customary, single-elimination tournament. Representing The United States in the eight-man draw will be undefeated four-time kickboxing champion and former Airforce and Armed Services heavyweight boxing champion, “Savage” Rick Cheek (19-0 (17 KO’s) (1 No Contest), as well as Muay Thai specialists Patrick Barry (14-3-1 (8 KO’s) and Esh’Chadar “The Dispossessor” Brown Ton (6-1 (3 KO’s).

Barry is slated to face Sweden’s Rickard Nordstrand (16-6 (3 KO’s) in the tournament’s quarterfinal round while, in the same bracket of the draw, Brown Ton is scheduled to square off with 23-year-old speed demon, Zabit Samedov (50-5 (26 KO’s), of Belarus.

Cheek’s quarterfinal round opponent has yet to be named. The other quarterfinal round matchup in Cheek’s bracket will see Russia’s Alexandre Pitchkounov (6-1-1 (3 KO’s) take on Japanese Karate stylist, Tsuyoshi Nakasako (18-24-1 (5 KO’s).

Tickets for “K-1 World Grand Prix 2007 in Las Vegas,” priced at $300, $200, $100, and $50, are on sale at Bellagio’s box office (888-488-7111) and on www.k-1usa.net, the official website of K-1 North America.

Bellagio Ballroom doors will open for “K-1 World Grand Prix 2007 in Las Vegas” at 5 PM Pacific Standard Time on Saturday, August 11th and the card’s first preliminary bout will begin at 5:30 PM. The eight-man tournament will commence at 7 PM.

TUF's Joe Lauzon Moving to Hilo To Train With BJ Penn?

It looks like the affair of mutual respect between UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon and the camp of BJ Penn will have another chapter added soon. Simply put, Joe Lauzon is going to Hawaii.

As a member of Team Penn on the fifth season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF 5), Lauzon earned rave reviews from BJ Penn and his assistant coaches like Rudy Valentino. In an interview with InsideFighting in June Lauzon revealed that Penn had invited him to stay with his team in Hawaii and train full time for a year or two.

At the time, Lauzon said he was “Thinking about it.” Now he says he is doing it.

“I’m gonna go out there. I’m going to kind of do it in stages. I’m going to take a week in August to see how things are out there and as long as everything is cool I’ll go back for two months from about the beginning of September to November. Then I’ll come home for the holidays and go back the beginning of the year” says Lauzon.

At that point, if all has gone well, Lauzon would plan return to Hawaii for an indefinite period of time, likely a year or more. There were many things to consider for Lauzon, like his full time job, family in Massachusetts and student loan payments, but he believes he has reached an important point in his MMA career.

“I’m thinking the next two years are gonna decide if I take off and do well or not. It will show if I can survive just fighting, it will be a good indicator” Lauzon says.

He’s got a pretty good life now, but the young and talented Lauzon yearns to see if he can make it outside of the 9-5 box.

“Ever since I got home from the show (TUF 5) every day I go to work I hate it. I’m ok with the job and there are good people there. But since I had to do nothing but train for a couple of months, its killing me just being inside and not going and training. I got used to those double sessions every day and I feel that I could have done more. Every minute I sit at work is a moment I can’t train” says Lauzon speaking for millions of would-be full time fighters dreaming from their cubicles or work sites.

Lauzon is worried that he has been training and fighting with some cartilage damage in a knee and results of tests being done Friday will help him determine exactly when he will be heading to Hawaii to begin his training.

“I’m getting my knee looked at Friday, it feels like a torn meniscus. That might affect when I go to Hawaii” says Lauzon.

To read more from Lauzon about why he decided to take the Pacific plunge in Hawaii with BJ Penn, what his family thinks about it and when he hopes to fight next, check back with InsideFighting on Monday for the full conversation.

Dopes caught doping at big rates
By Zach Arnold

Keep your eyes open for any further reports at MMA California.

The California State Athletic Commission released the latest drug test-related suspension figures from the time period of 3/31/2007 to 7/6/2007. Within that three month time-span, there were 28 failed drug tests - 20 of them in MMA plus Johnnie Morton refusing to take a test (MMA testing over a period of 17 events), 5 in boxing (over a period of 28 events), and 2 in kickboxing.

Do the math - that means 5 out of every 7 drug test failures in California were related to MMA, or a little over 70%. If you count Morton’s refusal to take a drug test as a testing failure (which naturally you should), then the ratio would hit 3 out of every 4 (21/28) drug test failures (75%).

STATEMENT FROM HERMES FRANCA
Franca Statement in Response to CSAC Suspension

The following statement was written by Hermes Franca and provided to Full Contact Fighter by his camp, in response to the fighter’s post-UFC 73, positive drug test with the California State Athletic Commission.

In the next few days, the results from the California Commission will be released. The tests will show that I had a "banned substance" in my system. I would like to apologize to my fans, the UFC, my students and family. I offer only an explanation and not an excuse. I made a decision during a difficult time in my training for the fight that I regret. About 8 weeks out from the fight, I badly injured my ankle during a training session. For the following week I had rested it, rehabbed it and tried to work around the injury. It was obvious that I could not train as required. I contacted the UFC and explained my injury and how I could not possibly train to the level I thought I would need in order to be properly prepared for my fight. I asked the UFC if we could push the fight out to the following UFC with the chance that it could happen. They explained that they could not do that and that the card had been set and it isnt as easy as just moving around a fight. I totally understood their position. They asked me to keep them informed should I not be able to fight.

I had not fought for 5 months. Fighting is literally how I put food on my wife and childs table and how I pay my bills. As a fighter though, even at this level, I live a simple life and I literally live from fight to fight. Not getting a paycheck for another few months and losing my chance to fight Sean for the title was overpowering. Fighting is the life I chose and I love it. As a lightweight fighter, our purses are comparatively small. The public sees the payouts. As lightweights, we do not pull down the money anything near the bigger guys. Its just the way it is. I think Sean fought and defended his title for less than $30,000. Its no ones fault, its just the market. I love the sport, I love the people in the sport.

At this point I was desperate and needed anything I could to get my injury as close to healing as possible and be able to recover from the daily training regimen I was going thru. I made the shortsighted choice to hopefully accelerate the healing process and allow me to keep training. Under the pressure of literally not being able to pay next months bills I made a choice. I had to fight and did whatever I could to do so.

I hope my fans, students, the UFC and the public accept my sincere apology. Whatever punishment is dictated by the California Athletic Commission I will understand. I would like to get through this very difficult time and the times ahead and get back to fighting. All the best to my fans and much thanks to my family and friends that continue to support me during these
times.

SHERK FILES APPEAL WITH COMMISSION
by Damon Martin

Less than 24 hours after the news that both competitors in the recent lightweight title fight at UFC 73 had tested positive for steroids, it has been confirmed by the California State Athletic commission that champion Sean Sherk has filed an appeal.

His opponent, Hermes Franca, has also filed an appeal, although based on speaking with CSAC Executive Director Armando Garcia, it is likely that Franca’s appeal is to try to lessen the amount of time given for the suspension, which is currently a standard one-year suspension for a positive steroid test.

Armando Garcia spoke to MMAWeekly and confirmed that Sherk called and spoke to him directly and advised of his intention to file the appeal, also claiming that he had never even heard of the steroid Nandralone, the drug he tested positive for according to the commission’s report.

The appeal will be heard in Los Angeles on August 6th in front of the California State Athletic Commission along with many other fighters who have tested positive for steroids, including the afore mentioned Hermes Franca, Phil Baroni and boxer James Toney.

During this appeal process, Garcia confirmed that the commission will not give Sherk another test, be it another urine test or a blood test. Garcia did say that Sherk has the option to do his own independent testing and present that along with any other evidence, witnesses, etc. to the commission when they hear the appeal on August 6th.

Armando Garcia stood by the validity of the tests that were performed on all fighters, mentioning specifically that both the “A” and “B” samples, which will not be tested by the athletic commission’s labs unless in a pristine state, came back positive. Also, in the case of nandralone and testosterone, because they are produced by the human body, the commission will perform an analysis on the sample to review the validity.

In Sean Sherk’s case, the levels for nandralone came back at 12 ng/mL. The average adult will test for nandralone at 2 ng/mL, and an athlete with vigorous activity will test up to 6 ng/mL. Garcia stands behind the fact that Sherk’s test coming back at 12 ng/mL, twice the limit, is more than enough to prove the positive testing correct.

The scheduled hearing in front of the California State Athletic Commission will be on August 6th. At this hearing, the appeal will also be heard from Hong Man Choi, who was denied a license prior to his scheduled bout with Brock Lesnar at the K-1 Dynamite show in June, reportedly due to tumors found near Choi's pituitary gland.

Royce Gracie officially suspended one year for steroids

Royce Gracie's one year suspension and $2,500 fine will stand, the California State Athletic Commission said today.

"Royce Gracie's timeframe to appeal his suspension has expired. A formal appeal hearing request was not received in our office therefore the suspension and fine are final."

The MMA legend tested positive for Nandrolone, an anabolic steroid, in a drug test administered for his June 2 bout with Kazushi Sakuraba at Dynamite!! USA.

Gracie won the three-round bout via unanimous decision, ending Sakuraba's undefeated streak against the Gracie family.

Sakuraba was also tested for banned substances and passed without incident.

The forty-year-old Gracie is not allowed to fight anywhere until June 2008.

Benoit toxicology report

If you aren’t interested, don’t read any further. If you’re interested, post any and all related replies to this post. Information in full-post mode.

Update: I linked to a transcript of an interview that Dr. David Black did with Anderson Cooper for 60 Minutes II in 2005 on CBS. I copied the link onto two sites - here and on the F4W message board. Now, Wade Keller is using the same snippet that I pointed out and not mentioning how he magically found the link to the transcript. Hard work. Send Wade a friendly e-mail here.

Here is The Associated Press report on the toxicology reports on Chris Benoit, Nancy Benoit, and son Daniel Benoit.

WWE statement on the Benoit toxicology report. Lance Storm comments on the drug problems in pro-wrestling.

One thing that I think is critical to point out is that at the press conference to announce the findings of the toxicology report, it was stated that Chris Benoit had a T/E ratio of 59:1.

T/E = (testosterone-to-epitestosterone)

To put this into perspective, the average human is 1:1. In order to fail a WADA drug test, you have to reach 4:1. Same with the NFL and NBA. In those drug tests (and drug tests administered to MMA fighters), there are no loopholes or exceptions. If you take prescriptions, you must notify the testers ahead of time.

In WWE, the ratio must be higher than 10:1 to fail, or approximately a 250% higher T/E ratio in comparison to testing in other sports. In addition, there is a loophole in which you can get testosterone-replacement therapy via a doctor’s prescription. Richard Sandomir in The New York Times discussed TRT in his article on Monday. Usually, wrestlers use TRT because they’re testosterone is low due to steroid usage.

Now, as to the question of whether or not testosterone is a steroid, the answer is yes. Dr. David Black, who helped formulate the NFL’s drug testing policy in the 1980s, is the man who oversees the WWE’s drug-testing policy now.

Here’s Dr. Black in a 60 Minutes II interview with Anderson Cooper in 2005 (this is about the 2004 Carolina Panthers Super Bowl team having members who supposedly took illegal prescriptions for steroids);

Cooper: Offensive lineman Todd Steussie, 6-foot-6, 320 pounds, an NFL veteran and two-time pro bowler. Out of 190 games, he’s missed only one because of injury, a remarkable record. His prescription record, however, tells a different story. Eleven prescriptions of testosterone creme over an eight-month period.

Cooper: “Is testosterone a steroid?”

Black: “Yes. Testosterone is the, ah, original base chemical, or the starting chemical for all the anabolic steroids.

Cooper: “Are NFL players allowed to take testosterone?”

Black: “Ah, no.”

So, why is this important? On Bryan Alvarez’s audio show today, he stated that WWE is considering testosterone to be different than anabolic steroids. However, Dr. Black is on-the-record as saying that testosterone is the original base chemical of anabolic steroids.

Let’s go back to WWE’s statement today:

On Mr. Benoit’s last drug test in April 2007 administered by Aegis Labs, he tested negative for anabolic steroids and for testosterone.

If testosterone, as Dr. Black pointed out in 2005, is an original chemical base for anabolic steroids, then this statement by WWE is extremely questionable in my opinion.
