Icon Sport: "All In"
Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii
February 9, 2007
By Chris Onzuka -
Chris@Onzuka.com

The fighters prepared for battle, thousands of people were eager for the action, I guess you could say that everyone was "All In" for Icon Sport's latest event. Icon Sport debuted some attractive recent acquisitions in Renato "Charuto" Verissimo and heavyweight Scott Junk to not only add depth, but bring in some local talent to please the crowd. This was a fast paced night of action as only two of the 13 bouts went to a decision. The heavy hitters got to show off their skill, racking up KO's like Mark Moreno and Justin Bacholz. There were also a fair number of submissions. "All In" All, a lot of action kept the crowd in check. Unfortunately, the main event had to be scratched due to Robbie Lawler. Lawler came down with a case of really bad food poisoning from about Tuesday. Current Icon Sport Middleweight Champion, Frank Trigg stepped in the ring to announce that he will be fighting Robbie Lawler soon, possibly as soon as the April Icon Sport event.

Icon Sport Champ Trigg At Momilani Elementary

February 9, 2007 Honolulu, HI Nutrition and exercise were the topics of discussion in the sixth grade class at Pearl City’s Momilani Elementary School this morning. The guest lecturer? Icon Sport Middleweight Champion Frank Trigg. Trigg, who is in Honolulu to witness the Icon Sport “All In” event, was invited to speak last week.

Upon entering the class, shiny Icon belt slung over his shoulders, Trigg sent the class into a teacher-managed chaos. Smiles, applause, and sheer awe spread throughout the classroom as the champ stepped forward to speak to them. A handful of the sixth graders thought he was actor Vin Diesel or pro wrestler Kurt Angle, but most recognized him as the new Icon Sport champ.

Trigg was a “natural” and immediately took control of the room. The children were completely focused on him as he told of his journey into MMA via wrestling. He explained the importance of nutrition, flexibility, and exercise, and urged each one of them to put down the TV remote control and spend more time playing any games that got them off the couch and up moving their bodies.

After his lecture - and the standing ovation that followed - Trigg autographed the “Icon Sport: Trigg versus Mayhem” poster for each child in the class. And as he walked out of the class, he proudly told the class’ teacher, “That’s was great. That makes everything I do in practice and in the ring worth while. Thank you for letting me share with them.”

Frank Shamrock prepares for Renzo Gracie
By Anthony Malakian

Back in 1993 when mixed martial arts first burst onto the scene, it was a Shamrock and a Gracie leading the charge into the public’s eye. Now, more than a decade later, it will again be a Shamrock and a Gracie leading MMA to new frontiers – this time as it breaks through onto premium cable.

When Frank Shamrock and Renzo Gracie do battle on Feb. 10 in the main event of EliteXC’s inaugural fight card at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Miss., it will also mark the first time Showtime will be televising a MMA event. For Shamrock, it’s a dream come true.

“I’m really excited for two reasons,” Shamrock said. “One, fighting on Showtime has always been a dream of mine and I think it is going to be huge. Two, fighting against Renzo is something I’ve always wanted to do, so I’m just tickled pink over here.”

Shamrock is now more than seven years removed from his days as the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s middleweight champion. He walked away from the Las Vegas based organization after stopping Tito Ortiz in September of ’99. Since then, there were Frank sightings in 2000 and 2003, and again last March as he stopped Renzo’s cousin, Cesar, in a Strikeforce competition.

Still, fight fans were clamoring for a regular dose of the 34-year-old. Now, after signing a multi-fight agreement with EliteXC, Shamrock says that he is back and looks forward to becoming champion again.

“I’ve been waiting for this sport to get bigger and I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to come along,” Shamrock said. “I’ve always trained, I’ve always been a professional martial artist, and now I have the opportunity to get paid a bunch of money and I get to do it on Showtime."

And fighting a Gracie, defending his family name in a classic match-up, made getting back into the cage that much sweeter.

“This is where it all started,” Shamrock said. “We were the first two names in mixed martial arts. It represents the best of American mixed martial arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I’ve always wanted to fight the Gracies, but no one has ever stepped up until now.”

It’s a match that fight fans are anxious to see, points out EliteXC president Gary Shaw, simply for how big the two families are in the MMA world.

“For me, having been on the stage with them at the press conference, I got the chills,” said Shaw, who made his name as one of the top boxing promoters. “It was like Lewis-Tyson. I just thought, God, I’m here with a Shamrock and a Gracie, what a way to start my career.”

At this point in his career, with all the awards he’s received, belts he’s won and records he’s set, Shamrock is looking to fight the best competition available. The youngest Shamrock views fighting Renzo as that kind of high-level challenge.

Shamrock has always been challenge driven. It’s what has kept him in top condition despite the fact that he has been fighting sporadically after climbing to the top of the MMA world by his mid-20’s.

Now, after all he has accomplished, he hopes to again climb to the top of the mountain.

“I’ve always looked for things to challenge me,” Shamrock said. “I figure by the end of the year I will be back to were I want to be and that is at the top of the game. My goals were to win championships and set records and I’ve done all that. Now I’m just looking to show as many people as possible that I am a good mixed martial artist.”

Gracie, who has himself only recently come back onto the professional scene, has been on a hot streak. Fighting in the International Fight League, he has won two super fights, submitting Pat Miletich and taking a split decision against Carlos Newton. Gracie is also the head coach of the Pitbulls, which is based out of New York City.

In Gracie, Shamrock feels he has found a competitor who can push him to his deepest thresholds.

“He’s still a gamer,” Shamrock said. “I think he is the toughest of all the Gracies. I’ve watched his game and I have studied it pretty thoroughly. He’s got a good ground game, understands standup. I’m looking for someone to challenge me; I’m looking for someone who can beat me, and he’s the guy.”

Like Gracie, Shamrock is a head coach for one of the 12 IFL teams, the Razorclaws (San Jose). Coaching this team has brought great joy to Shamrock.

After losing 3-2 to his brother Ken’s team, the Lions, Frank held open tryouts in an attempt to bring some depth to his team. He had approximately 50 applicants, of which 12 were invited to try out. He was very pleased with what he saw.

“I was very impressed with the level of knowledge that was out there,” Shamrock said. “I was also impressed with the level of commitment that these guys showed.”

Now he’s hoping to get another shot at his older brother.

“I hated losing to Ken, but it is what it is – you win some, you lose some,” admitted Frank. “The boys fought their hearts out and they’re living the dream – but I sure would’ve loved to win that one.”

Who knows, perhaps one day in the future we will see the Shamrock brothers compete against one another inside the ring or a cage rather than as coaches. But for now, the task at hand for Frank is defending the Shamrock name against the Gracies. It’s a mission he is glad to accept.

Anderson Silva Fights Through
By Sean McClure

Reports are coming out of UFC 67 that Anderson Silva took the fight despite some injuries. Just 11 weeks ago Silva apparently had surgery on both knees, but decided to still fight on the UFC 67 card. This is a testament to his professionalism, dedication, and heart. Silva knew the risks bravely took the fight against one of the best jiu jitsu fighters in the UFC. This probably explains why Anderson was so frustrated with Lutter for not making weight. He was dealing with knee surgery after effects and took the fight to honor Travis's title shot that he earned from winning the Ultimate Fighter season 4. It might also explain why he couldn't squeeze the triangle as hard as he would have liked. If Lutter had a shot to beat the #1 middleweight fighter in the world it was on February 3rd.

Silva will most likely take some time off to fully recover. He will probably be facing Nathan Marquardt when he is physically 100% and ready to fight.

K-1 Unveils Reality TV Show
By Mark Pickering

K-1’s parent company, Fight Entertainment Group, has unveiled plans to launch a reality television programme aimed at discovering and developing fighters in Japan.

The concept, premiered in the first instalment of the hugely successful Ultimate Fighter series, has been adapted by an abundance of markets including Berlin-based MAX Fighters organisation, and American network, Oxygen TV’s Fight Girls series.

K-1’s adaptation will take the traditional form of an ongoing competition between two teams - one coached by four-time K-1 World Grand Prix Champion Ernesto Hoost, the second by South Africa’s three-time K-1 World Grand Prix semi-finalist Mike Bernardo.

FEG President Sadaharu Tanikawa said he hoped young Japanese fighters would flourish under the tutelage of two of K-1’s most prized veterans.

Viewers will follow their progress on the Fuji TV’s weekly flagship combat show, Special Ringside.

One year without Carlson Gracie

Ecxactly one year ago, the fight community suffered a terrible lose. The BJJ black belt Carlson Gracie died one year ago because of some problems on his kidney, letting his friends and pupils, that got together yesterday (February 4th) for the to religious mass remember Carlson Gracie.

Not even with the finals of the ADCC Brazil, that finished about 5:40pm (at the same time as the celebration started), the mass was crowed and had the visit of almost 40 people, beyond fans, friends and family. The cerimony did put together many different BJJ generations and all of them did remember Carlson’s funny and unbelivable stories.

- Everyone here has many histories to tell about Carlson, when everyone get together it is hard to not talk about him – explained Oswaldo Paquetá, Carlson’s best friend, just after the mass. Mrs. Marli, Carlson’s wife, who went to the mass with her mother, remembered something that her grandchild said some day. “Some days ago my grandchild said to Karen that she is keeping with her a blanket to give her grandfather in heaven”, said Marli. With so many histories and so many people and friends together, that was hard to say good bye and go home.

Cesar Gracie Interview

This is the transcript of Episode #51 with Cesar Gracie. A listener politely posted that the original audio interview was too hard to listen to. Ross, thanks for keeping us honest. Above all we want to do right by our fans.

Caleb: Hey everybody, welcome to The FightWorks Podcast, presented by On The Mat.com. This is Caleb, your host, and we've got Dan, our cohost, and of course we're joined today by Cesar Gracie. Cesar, how are you?

Cesar: Doing good, thank you.

Caleb: We know you're really busy these days, why don't you tell us a little bit about the things that are boiling right now on your stove.

Cesar: Um, fight-wise, we've got Nick fighting Gomi coming up here on the 24th of February. I've got Javier Vasquez and Renzo Gracie fighting February 10th in Showtime, I'm managing both those guys right now, and Jake Shields looks like he's going to Bodog, we're probably finalizing that today and he'll be flying down on the 11th of February for that fight, that's in Costa Rica, we'll be getting his opponent named shortly here and after that I've got both those guys Jake and Nick going over to Showtime May 5th, and that's what I got going on in the fight arena.

Caleb: Is Gilbert Melendez under you these days now, I'm kinda lost on that.

Cesar: Yeah Gilbert, I don't manage Gilbert, but Gilbert does fight on our team. He's been on our team now since he started.

Caleb: And is David Terrell still active, or what's his status these days?

Cesar: David Terrell, I'm heading up to his academy in two days. Um, let's see here, he's had this like bad elbow injury, he's got a chip, a little bone chip on his elbow and he's going in for surgery next week. Then he's gonna get back into fighting, training again, he's gonna stay in shape, and after his elbow has had some time, he'll start fighting. Gilbert Melendez is not fighting on the Vegas show for Pride, he'll be fighting in Japan, probably not till May however.

Caleb: Is that a recent change?

Cesar: No he was trying to get on the card out here, there's a lot of contractual stuff... looking at getting [him] into the GP tournament they'll be having, lightweight tournament in Japan

Dan: That is a lot of stuff on the stove, Caleb.

Caleb: Yeah, he's a very busy guy.

Cesar: Yeah and those are just the major shows. Obviously there's a bunch of smaller shows coming up here this month and next and my other fighters will be fighting on those shows.

Caleb: Well, one of the things we like to do is always to get a little bit of background and biographical information about our interviewees because a lot of times we hear the recent things people are doing and what they're up to but we don't know a lot about when they came to the United States, and how they got involved, and of course you're a member of the Gracie family so we have some idea, but could you tell us a little bit about your story?

Cesar: Well, I came to the U.S. originally back in the 1970's when I was a kid, my mother moved out here and then I moved back to Brazil, and I stayed there, and I came back about 1990, and at the time, jiu-jitsu was very small here in the U.S., there was only one major school and that was Rorion Gracie's school. But that was out of a garage, you can't really call it a major school. Carley Gracie lived in northern California and taught primarily privates, so there really wasn't any schools whatsoever. Rorion had that garage and that was the first public school and that was in Torrance California. At the time, I moved out, and I brought some of my cousins from Brazil, the Machados, and so I brought them out here, and we opened a school in my garage in Redondo Beach and that was the second school in the United States. And we've been teaching since then. I decided to move to northern California, I opened a school up here, and I decided to bring another one of my cousins up to the U.S. and got him started here, Ralph Gracie. And, that's how things got started. So, that's a little background.

Dan: It's always cool to hear about that original school when all the Gracies were training together, you know, in one garage.

Cesar: Yeah, you know, it was kinda interesting, at one point, when Rorion had the mats in his garage there and everything, and there was so many different guys there, it was myself, and Ralph was visiting with me so we both trained there, Rickson started teaching some classes there, Royce obviously was the main instructor at first. Rorion taught a few classes and Royler was out here for a while too, and you had all these guys, training together you know on the same, small place. It was a 700 square foot garage or something, with mats on it, and all that talent was in there training so obviously it really kinda branched out a little bit, and we opened another place. Royler decided he really enjoyed living in Brazil more, with his family, so he moved back, and then Rickson eventually started his own thing, opened his own school. And [unintelligible] used to train out of his own garage too, for a while there, so we all kinda started opening up our own schools, and branching out with our own careers and so forth. The sport grew bigger and really got popular where all these other people from Brazil came up here, and now you've got Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which is massive. I remember the day when no one used to know what it was. It was in one spot only, in the United States.

Caleb: One of the things I wanted to ask you about Cesar, bringing it back to the present, is just recently, I think it was back in November you left the World Fighter Organization, and from a business perspective, the mixed martial arts scene is really volatile these days. Do you have any thoughts on that?

Cesar: I do. You know, it's like any other business. It reminds me a lot of the dot coms as a matter of fact, where, obviously there's potential, and people see the potential, and everybody wants a piece of the potential. Everybody's saying what a lot of startups said, with people wanting to be the next Pride, or UFC, or K-1 or whatever. So they're opening up, they're starting these organizations to be successful. The World Fighter Organization was one of those, and there's a formula for success in this game, and most people don't really know the formula. So they'll come in, and they'll come in with good intentions and everything, but it's just not a matter of spending a lot of money. It's not necessarily the way to go. And you'd see things like, the WFA, which folded, who poured huge amounts of money into making a show big, which doesn't necessarily mean it will be. The World Fighter Organization in particular had hired me as a matchmaker and I wasn't part of the organization as far as like money coming in, or business decisions. I said, "Hey, get this fighter here, this would be a good guy to get", you know, and that type of stuff. A little bit further down the line I noticed that they made some mistakes and started to misrepresent themselves a little bit. They had said they would do the show on the boardwalk with Renzo, Frank, and this person and that person, and a bunch of other people, and me knowing the fighters very well personally for many years, I knew some of these guys from outside. They said they had Frank Trigg for example, signed to the organization, and I knew that wasn't the case. I'm friends with Frank's manager, Rico Chiaparelli, and he wasn't signed. So them putting that out there, and putting other people that they really didn't have a signature yet, I could tell that they were trying to wing it, and build up the hype they have with a person and then hoping that more investment would come and more people would sign and so forth. Really that's not the way to do things, because you know people get wary of you real quick if they start to see some things aren't real. And then I noticed that, I called the boardwalk myself and noticed they weren't booked there, but it was on there website. So, you know I had to move on from the thing and I kinda figured it would collapse shortly afterwards and about a month later or something it really did. So I was happy that I did the right thing.

Caleb: Do you have time for a couple more questions?

Cesar: Sure.

Dan: The big question that I had is, Cesar you're one of the folks who've really seen both sides of fighting in terms of gi, as well as no-gi. It's always one of the questions we're always asked a lot at the school and so forth, and I'd like to get your opinion on... How do you deal, in terms of someone starting off in fighting or training, especially if they're gonna be going into MMA, do you like for them to still start with the gi, or do you like for them to start off without the gi? How do you tie those two together?

Cesar: I think you really need to be able to do both. At my school we do gi and gi-less, and everybody that's gonna come in has their own priorities. Obviously I'm going to have guys and you know, they just want to do gi-less and I got guys that just want to do gi, they really appreciate that, that aspect of the gi, and they want to explore that and have fun with it. You take the gi-less people on their own, and they wanna fight, and they like that better, so you give them that option. Now the reason I think you need to do both is because if you really want to do MMA, you gotta think mixed martial arts is a competition for a professional to get into, but really MMA is you not getting the shit kicked out of you in a street fight or something, you know? People don't walk around in Speedos in the street unless you're in Miami in the summer or something. People walk around in clothes, and all the gi is is a substitute for the clothes so you don't have to keep getting them ripped over and over. They're meant to take the place of that, a jacket, and a pair of pants, jeans or something. I've had really good MMA guys come in, and get choked out by a guy wearing a gi. You need to know how to defend against a sleeve choke, or something, and they learn quick, "Oh I don't want to be training with a guy with a gi on, and him getting me in this move...". You need to understand that jiu-jitsu and the grappling arts were originally invented for self defense. You're walking down the street and you're attacked, and the guy he's got a jacket on him, and then you're probably going to have a jacket on. What's gonna happen when you don't know how to defend against a simple choke, you know? An MMA guy may get on top of you with a double leg or something, next thing you know the guy's got two hands in your collar and you passed out. That's really not the objective of things. My idea is, you don't have to be excellent and have to know both, you can excell in gi-less, and know some gi, or vice versa just to have yourself prepared for those situations. I pretty much teach guys to do both. I do have guys that 99% of the time do one thing. Right now David Terrell he just trains gi-less, and he's got his black belt in gi. Jake Shields was a gi-less guy that came in, and he did some work, and I did have him compete with the gi on, and he won the Pan-American purple belt division a couple years back. He had like seven matches. I do prefer guys to do both at my school.

Dan: So, I guess the next question is, when you have someone who competes without the gi predominantly, and let's say maybe they're not an MMA fighter, when you're promoting them, does that come into play at all.

Cesar: It does, it does come into play. Again, I look at what that guy wants to specialize in, and like Jake for example, he's my gi-less guy. You know a guy like Nick Diaz he's really 50-50 to be honest with you. Jake is a brown belt, Nick is a brown belt. I think that you look at a guy like Marcelo Garcia. He does both [gi and gi-less]. Who's going to tell that guy he's not a black belt if he just never wore a gi again. Him coming up, you'd have to promote him also. I'd have to obviously make a little bit of adjustments from that standpoint because I came from a Brazilian jiu-jitsu school, where you learn how, you put a gi on, and that's how you train. That's how you get promoted. So it works kinda like hit and miss, you know, what to look for under my own standards. I've got my standards of what I need to see, so I'll see a guy with technique, and I think that if a guy is to be promoted gi-less, I'd like them to know some gi. So it's like I told you with Jake Shields, you know, I put a gi on him for a while, and he got pretty damn good at it to be honest with you! Winning the purple belt at the Pan-Americans is no easy task. He really wiped out the field. In his last match he took a guy that was a silver medalist in the Worlds, and Jake beat the guy like 18-0.

Dan: Wow.

Cesar: Yeah and everybody else he armbarred or did whatever to. So I think we'll put a gi on a guy a little bit, and kinda go, "Look check this out I know you don't like this too much, and whatever, but..."

Dan: "...give it a go and see how it works out."

Cesar: Yeah give it a go a little bit and just be somewhat proficient. You don't have to be great at it, you need to know what's going on with it. That's just my opinion.

Dan: Good, I like that. Caleb...?

Caleb: I was just going to say thanks a lot for being with us Cesar. Is there anything else you'd like to say out to the listeners out there before saying goodbye?

Cesar: This is for On The Mat?

Caleb: Yeah, we're going to be on On The Mat.com and The FightWorks Podcast.

Cesar: No, just say "hi" to Scotty and Gumby, and those guys. I heard Gumby got his black belt from my cousin Ralph, so congrats, and to all the guys that are training in jiu-jitsu and everything, just have fun with it and thanks for participating in the sport.

A Huge Thanks to Nakano-san & Kasahara-san!

Thanks to Mark Kurano for bringing his friends from Japan, one of whom just happen to be a world class Judoka to the
O2 Martial Arts Academy last night. He taught some fundamental throws, but he taught them the way he performs them at the world class level. Due to this class alone, he helped to totally revamp most our theories and practical aspects of our Judo and introduced the elite level of Judo to the whole academy.

Shintaro Nakano is a member of the All Japan Judo Team, first competing at 60kg and then moving up in weight to perform even better at the 69kg division. I believe he is currently ranked 5th in Japan.

Takeyuki Kasahara also accompanied Nakano-san. Kasahara is sponsored by Secon (a Japanese securities firm) and a Chuo University player. He was a master of the uchimata and was catching everyone with it, with total control. Everyone, especially me, appreciated the soft landing due to his skill level performing this throw.

These guys were awesome to learn from and they took on all comers in randori, often causing the whole academy to gasp, then cheer all the while being thoroughly impressed.

SETTLEMENT REACHED,
SHAMROCK VS. GRACIE IS ON

by Ken Pishna

For EliteXC, the first mixed martial arts promotion to air on premium cable channel Showtime; the focus has unfortunately not been on the fights, but on the contractual status surrounding their main event, Frank Shamrock vs. Renzo Gracie.

Frank Shamrock had a pre-existing contract with the California-based Strikeforce promotion. According to Strikeforce, his contract stated that his next fight, if it were to occur in less than 24 months from his fight against Cesar Gracie, which took place on the Strikeforce event of March 10, 2006, must take place under the Strikeforce banner.

Strikeforce official Mike Afromowitz told MMAWeekly in mid-December, “Frank has a contract with us that very clearly states that his next fight is to be for us. By signing to fight elsewhere before fulfilling that fight, he is not honoring that contract.”

As recently as mid-January, Shamrock stated, "It has been straightened out. Strikeforce and I have a really good business relationship and we have been able to see past the points."

Strikeforce seemed to disagree however, as they took the issue to the courts and were initially granted a temporary restraining order due to Shamrock’s breach of contract. Strikeforce later rescinded the restraining order in an attempt to come to an agreement with Pro Elite.

As first reported by Sherdog.com and independently confirmed by MMAWeekly.com, an agreement was struck at the 11th hour and the fight will take place this weekend as scheduled.

Strikeforce has been making waves in the MMA world since their debut show set an American attendance record, but they haven’t been able to reach too far into a market dominated by the Ultimate Fighting Championship which has a far great reach due to their product being on SpikeTV and pay-per-view. The only thing really lacking for Strikeforce is exposure to a wider audience.

At the time of publication, no details were forthcoming on the final agreement between Strikeforce and Pro Elite, but considering that Strikeforce is an established promotion that has been able to draw top tier talent to fight for them, it wouldn’t be a stretch to think that the agreement might include some sort of exposure for their promotion on Showtime. Receiving the exposure that Showtime could provide for Strikeforce would be far more valuable than just a monetary settlement. Of course, there are myriad different options that a settlement could include and we won’t know the final details as of yet.

ELITEXC AND STRIKEFORCE CREATE STRATEGIC ALLIANCE

Strategic Alliance to Take Effect after Shamrock Faces Gracie in EliteXC Debut Telecast on Showtime February 10, 2007 at 10 p.m. ET/PT

LOS ANGELES (February 7, 2007) – ProElite, Inc. (PELE.PK) today announced the creation of a strategic alliance between its EliteXC live events division and Strikeforce, a San Jose, California-based premiere mixed martial arts promotion. The strategic alliance will pave the way for EliteXC and Strikeforce to promote fights together featuring Frank Shamrock following his bout with Renzo Gracie on the debut of EliteXC on SHOWTIME, February 10 at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, MS.

EliteXC and Strikeforce plan to co-promote pay-per-view events beginning with the highly-anticipated showdown between former UFC middleweight champion, Frank Shamrock, and fellow middleweight knockout artist, “The New York Badass” Phil Baroni. The strategic alliance with Strikeforce is the first that EliteXC has formed with another promoter; it was announced by EliteXC President Gary Shaw.

“EliteXC is excited about our new strategic alliance with Strikeforce - one of the leaders in MMA promotion,” said Shaw. “Starting with an event featuring Frank Shamrock, we hope to do many more events together in the future.”

A leader in the mixed martial arts world, Strikeforce broke the all-time record for attendance at a mixed martial arts fight event in North America when it hosted a sellout crowd of 18,265 at San Jose, California’s HP Pavilion, the home of the NHL’s San Jose Sharks.

“Strikeforce has been a successful player in mixed martial arts fight promotions for the last year,” said Scott Coker, President of Strikeforce, “and working with ProElite is a great way to showcase our fighters and this great sport to millions of fans worldwide.”

“The alliance with Strikeforce is a logical move for ProElite as we both share a commitment to creating world-class mixed martial art events.” announced ProElite CEO Douglas DeLuca. ProElite launches on February 10th with “Destiny – Shamrock vs. Gracie” televised live on Showtime at 10pm EST.

Exclusive: PRIDE For Sale? Ed Fishman Hopes So
by Josh Gross

A report surfaced last week that gaming industry stalwart Ed Fishman was in negotiations to purchase the PRIDE Fighting Championships. On Wednesday, Sherdog.com spoke with Fishman, who currently serves as President of PRIDE USA, to get his side of the story.

The 63-year-old entertainment entrepreneur revealed a strong desire to purchase the company that’s home to Fedor Emelianenko (Pictures) and Wanderlei Silva (Pictures) — however any talk of a sale, said Fishman, is premature.

Sherdog.com: Are you interested in buying PRIDE and have you taken steps in that effort?

Ed Fishman: Yes I am. I wish I could have a chance to buy PRIDE. It’s to me the best MMA in the business. And I have absolutely made that known to Mr. Sakakibara — I call him Nobu. We have not gone into real heavy details yet. He is back in Japan now, and he’ll be here next week when we’re getting ready for the 24th. I’m sure we’ll have more conversations then, but I am dead serious about buying it.

I had an opportunity to first become acquainted with it about four years ago. I watched it. I’ve watched their production. I’ve watched the quality of their fighters. I’ve compared them. My background is in entertainment for the last 40 years, whether that’s owning the casinos that I’ve owned, whether that’s owning movies, television, putting on major shows, concerts. I realize the things they do are really good as far as putting on a show, and I sincerely believe that PRIDE has the best fighters in the world.

I think that the UFC probably agrees with me, because they just paid the highest price for one of our PRIDE fighters, Mirko “Cro Cop.” And he literally is as good as there is as far as a kickboxer, even though he was beaten by some of our guys — Fedor, Nogueira, Mark Hunt (Pictures) and Kevin Randleman (Pictures). I think he will do absolutely wonderful at the UFC and take on anybody there.

Sherdog.com: What exactly is the extent of your relationship with PRIDE now. There’s talk that you’re an investor, but can you elaborate on what your role is.

Fishman: I really don’t want to elaborate too much on my role except that I have a contract with them as President of PRIDE USA, and am hoping to take that further. For nine and a half years they only have done it in Tokyo and people have only seen it on pay-per-view. So we got the opportunity on October 21st to show something here of the difference. We had a great response and that’s why we’re doing it on the 24th. We have a great card. We have three champions on there. Most of our fights are not just a couple of good fights and undercards — they’re mostly all fights that each one of them rank the highest in the rankings.

I talked to Caesars Palace — as you probably know Caesars at one time was the home of the great sporting events, and that’s what they want to be again. So do a lot of the other hotels that came in and bought tickets — who never bought tickets for UFC before — because we’re an international company. We have a lot of international followers who came. They certainly played. It was certainly good for the audience. It was good for the casinos. It’s more of a high-end affair, and if I had a dream, and I was able to get this, I would challenge UFC in each one of our weights to find out, really, who has the best fighters. … I would love to make that challenge and see what UFC thinks about that kind of an event.

Sherdog.com: It sounds like, from everything I’ve heard, that the UFC also has a deep interest in purchasing PRIDE. Do you feel any pressure, as someone who would like to take control of the company in some capacity, to make the deal happen before the UFC can do it?

Fishman: No. I’ve heard the same thing. I haven’t talked to any one of the key people at all. I know them. I respect them. I think they’ve done an excellent job. Television has really helped them. I come from a television background. We’re talking about doing two television shows that will hopefully we’ll be announcing soon. A different kind that will certainly be very interesting, in a much larger way. I think that will produce a lot more pay-per-view.

The one thing that I would not want to do if I was able to get PRIDE is lower the quality of how we do our events, or lower the quality of the fighters that we have. The staff that I have met over in Tokyo is a well-oiled machine — the same as UFC has a well-oiled machine over here. We have some staff here that are very good, but I would embellish on that staff and bring in a lot more people here. And, you know, production-wise and everything else that they’re doing over in Japan, we would do the same thing here in the United States. And if I was able to buy the whole PRIDE company, I’d be talking about Macau; I’d be talking about Europe; I’d be talking about Russia — all the places I do business now in.

Sherdog.com: You have a long-standing relationship with Harrah’s, having sold your Players Club International to them and done other work with them. Would that be a relationship, if you owned PRIDE, you could do something together again?

Fishman: I think that’s something that’s possible. I think the first [PRIDE USA], both parties were very, very happy. And that’s the most important thing in doing an event. Harrah’s, especially the Caesars Palace name, were never one that really supported UFC. And some of the other ones like Venetian, Steve Wynn, Golden Nugget were not there either. So we literally were able to take a lot of people that I know and bring in, especially being an Asian-bred company — we all know that Asians like to play [casino games] — we were able to bring in some very good Asian play, and that was just an add-on to a very great event. So places from Monte Carlo to Atlantic City to the Caribbean to Macau — all over the world, in other words, where there is gaming, PRIDE is wanted. My vision is to take them there.

Sherdog.com: The first PRIDE event in the States last October: would you classify that as a success?

Fishman: Well, it’s hard to say what “success” means. Success as far as the people who came, who were maybe skeptical about is it going to be just another MMA card, it was a tremendous success. I mean from the people who live here, who have only seen it on television, who are the ones at the hotels. Every hotel that is in it now has bought more tickets, and enjoyed it even more. It was a good representation of us.

If you’re talking about the fights themselves and judging them, I must tell you I’m new to the game, but I’m new to a lot of games. I never owned a casino before I decided to buy one. So, what I’ve heard is that, some may be better than others. What I think the guys have done for the 24th is put together a better card, and something that has much better fighters in every division. So, literally, I don’t see many undercards on the 24th. We wouldn’t be doing a second time here if everybody didn’t like it. We wouldn’t have the sponsors. And I’m really excited about the card.

The following one is April 28th, which happens to be a Japanese holiday for Las Vegas when we’re doing it, just like the Chinese New Year when we’re doing it. And I expect a very big turnout for the Japanese holiday on April 28th.

Sherdog.com: Can you provide some background on how you were initially connected to Dream Stage Entertainment (PRIDE’s parent company) and why you feel they brought you in to become President of their U.S. office?

Fishman: If I remember correctly, four years ago I was in China doing some business consulting in Beijing on a new scratch-game card. One of the leading senators there who was a very big fan of PRIDE went ahead and insisted that I come [to Japan] and really see. Well, I said that’s great. I went to the Tokyo Dome and saw over 60,000 people, with thousands outside waiting to get in. That’s a Super Bowl to us. And they put on a show that was spectacular.

I came back, realized that most of the people on the card were international. I told a very close friend of mine who knows something about marital arts, Chuck Norris, that I went to Tokyo to see this, and he couldn’t stop talking about PRIDE as far as being absolutely the best fighters, absolutely the best production. And I got excited. I went back. I met Nobu. We sat and talked and I told him when he’s ready to come to the United States that we market a little bit different over here.

We’re very interested, as an ex-casino owner, of having Asian players come over. And probably 18 months to two years later he decided. He gave me a call and I think he was smart enough to realize that if you go to a knew a country you need to market and know the right people — and you’re opening up in the entertainment capital in the world that has everything, including a very strong competitor in the UFC. I explained to him that UFC is a very good company, that they’re a different kind of casino. That they are more for locals, mid-level — even though they’ve built a beautiful one in Red Rock and they’re good people, but they’re United States mostly. But, PRIDE, you’ve done the world. Now let’s make a hit in the United States.

It will take a little while when you bring it over and we will grow. He did his due diligence, on who I am, what promotions I’ve done, what experience I have in television and film and stars and the contacts I have here in Las Vegas. We made a long-term deal to do it. I must tell you I put together big casinos and maybe some sponsors and I help in making sure we bring over Asian players, who initially came as PRIDE fans. It worked over very, very successfully for the first one. And it’s working the same thing for the second one. That’s the reason. I think [Sakakibara] recognized that you need somebody who understands the American market. …

[Las Vegas] is a tough place to get going with any type of entertainment. You’ve got it all, and I decided to open up to every casino by doing it at Thomas & Mack, which is a neutral place, so that every casino could buy and not have worry about sending their best players to another casino. That worked very well also. And there were a lot of people out there who didn’t know whether or not it was going to be just another MMA card, but they believed in the past in the things I’ve done for 40 years. Most of them have proven worthy. Some of them have not been proven worthy, but luckily when we balance out we did better.

I know I wasn’t an expert on MMA, but I knew I can put PRIDE in casinos open internationally to players. And I know that the entertainment value, which is needed, would be there. And Nobu and his staff provided exactly that. When you talked about success before, that’s exactly it: people came. I was surprised when we do a four-hour show — you usually don’t do that long of a show ever in a casino; you don’t want to keep the players out that long — but yet [people] stayed for the whole thing. I told people that at six o’clock when we open, we open spectacularly. Just like the Super Bowl, in the middle they do something spectacular and that’s what we do. And we will continue doing that.

Sherdog.com: As you’ve gotten to know PRIDE — the people involved and the company itself — there’s always been a discussion as to who’s in control of the company. It appears Mr. Sakakibara has taken the lead there. Are there other players involved within the company whom you’ll have to deal with?

Fishman: Well, there are a lot people that I’ve met I would like to keep. I think [Sakakibara] may be open to stepping down in Japan and he’s told me that. There are some key people he has that would take over there. Here in the United States we do things differently; I’d keep some of the people he has here, but I would put on a lot of the marketing people I have in my company who know the American market, and especially know the casino market. Because I look at this as not only a great event, but I know that also bringing in players from around the world is an add-on to a casino and something that I’d want.

I know that Nobu as a majority owner, if he did sell it, I’d want him involved here in the United States and to continue somehow because it’s his baby. But he does realize that in the casino business you have to know something about it, so he respects what I’ve done and the people I’ve known. I remember the first time he came here and he gave me one-day’s notice and I set up meetings with six of the [casino] presidents and CEOs. Once they saw the videotape and saw what was going on and what it meant and who attends these things, everyone was willing to try it. And they know that I wouldn’t particularly disappoint them on it.

For now it’s working out well. I can’t tell you who’s going to buy it, who will do it. All I can tell you is that I’m sincerely interested in it. I’m talking to them about it. And I’d love to take this business and expand it all over the United States.

Sherdog.com: Are there things about the company as it stands now that concern you as a prospective buyer, and would they possibly be deal-breakers to you?

Fishman: You never know something until you do your due diligence on what’s out there. But you’re really buying assets. Assets are fighters’ contracts. They’ve got a library of over 600 fights. And, you know, it’s one of those things you’ve got to take a close look at it and see.

Right now I see nothing. I like what I see when I see the shows. But we have not really delved with due diligence. It doesn’t take very long, but we haven’t delved into that yet. I wish I could answer that. I’ve bought and sold a lot of businesses in my life, and some surprise you and some don’t. But I know MMA is going to be very popular and it’s going to continue to grow. And unfortunately I see boxing not growing. So I see it as a perfect opportunity to get in this business.

Sherdog.com: What sort of timeline are you looking at? How soon would you like to get a deal done?

Fishman: As soon as possible. [Sakakibara] is coming here in a week or so to do the 24th, and I’m sure we’ll spend a lot of time talking about it.

Right now, my concern is making sure we put on the best show possible on Feb. 24th and that the fans out there, again whether they buy pay-per-view or come to Thomas & Mack, that they see the quality of fighter we have on all the cards, and we have three champions [fighting]. Also, they see the quality of production. And also it was mentioned to me many times was the speed between the fights. We didn’t waste much time. We didn’t have to waste 15-20 minutes between fights. So there were some things that were done very well. We did lots of focus groups afterwards, and I guess you’d have to know they turned out good or else I wouldn’t be willing to step up and buy the whole thing.

Sherdog.com: As owner of PRIDE, if that happens, do you think it’ll run similarly to the way it is now, where it’s largely Japan-based, or will Japan not be as important a market for you?

Fishman: I haven’t given it a lot of thought, but there are so many fans I never thought of stopping going to Japan. I think we’d get back television, get back a sponsorship and we are delving very heavy into China. The U.S. is so important to us. And besides China, we will be taking other Asian countries and move around the globe. I was just in London talking to major casino operators there. They would love to have it. So, no, I work maybe a little bit fast. I’m excited and I think this would just grow all around the world.

Sherdog.com: If PRIDE does not sell, if the ownership stays in place along with the same marketing and everything else, can it survive? That has long been a discussion among mixed martial arts fans: how much life does it have left? Do you have an opinion on that?

Fishman: No, the only opinion I have is you may need some infusion in money only because what I’ve seen the UFC do in taking one of the fighters and paying them so much money. You don’t want to get into what happened to boxing, where all of a sudden everybody thinks they’re worth so much more, then you get so high up there in purse value that there’s no room to make anything out of it for a profitable business. That would be my concern.

It’s still a possibility that it will stay right where it is right now. There is no sale out there. There are lots of people talking, but there is no sale out there. And, like I said, we have this date. We have April 28th, which should be a good date because we have a Japanese holiday here, and we will have some great Japanese fighters. I take one day at a time. All I’ve done is mention that I’m very much interested if that becomes the decision of Nobu’s, and for whatever reason someone picked it up and wrote down that we were in negotiations. That’s really not true right now.

Many people are interested in the show and giving different offers, including me, to come on in. New sponsors. New ways of revenue money. Etcetera. I don’t look at that. Right now, it belongs to Nobu and I’m very happy doing what I’m doing. It was a choice between sitting on the beach and counting dolphins or getting involved in this. …

I think the UFC is just one of them out there. I take my hat off. I think they do a tremendous job. I know they do a tremendous job in casinos. The only difference is they’re a local’s casino, so the big player element doesn’t really make a difference, although they did build a most beautiful place in Red Rock. But the rest of the casinos I’m involved with are very large casinos, which are very much interested in getting international players in. And that’s what we do bring along.

Sherdog.com: If the UFC purchases PRIDE, what would that mean for your role as president of PRIDE USA?

Fishman: I don’t know. I guess that would be up to them. They would either continue the contract or offer to buy it out or do something. I mean, I haven’t even thought about that. No matter which way it is, I may still stay in the MMA business, even if they bought it.

Sherdog.com: There was a strong rumor about two weeks ago that the UFC was on the verge of purchasing PRIDE and both the American investor — presumably you — and also PRIDE’s Korean television partner stepped up with more money. Is there any truth to that on your end?

Fishman: I don’t know because I know that I can step up with more money and have, but I don’t know what they’ve offered. I don’t expect them to know what I should offer and I don’t expect to know what they offered. So I really can’t tell you.

There’s a certain level, and I don’t think until you really do your due diligence you know what it’s worth, and what it’s worth to expand because I’d want to expand very rapidly. And the team we’d put together would want to do that also. There isn’t a dollar set amount in my mind. It would really depend on what myself, my accountants and my advisors thought where we’re going in the next three, four, five years.

I’m sure you’ve seen a company that did a reverse shell recently and didn’t really have anything. And you can see how many people are interested. PRIDE’s vision of expanding internationally is the same as mine. So I know that we do have together. … I have no idea what the UFC plans, but if they did buy it, it’s their money, they can do what they want to do. Again, I wish I could tell you that I’d been in this for years. Ask me about casinos I can tell you about building. What it would cost. What it would make. Etcetera. Or let’s do a new film. But as far as this, I can’t even tell you honestly if the UFC has made an official offer. We don’t talk about it. And that’s why I was surprised, and why I’m talking to you now, I’m very open. I’ll answer questions straight out. And if something comes I’ll be the first one to make the announcement.

Really, it’s not in my ballpark now. It’s in Nobu’s to decide what he wants to do. But I think that you being in this business much longer and knowing it, I think you’d have to believe with me that this is not just something that’s going away so fast, mixed martial arts. If you do it well, it will go for a long time.

Sherdog.com: I would like to hope that’s true. And I think at this point the evidence is bearing that out. If the market place is willing to accept it and with the right product and right marketing, you can be very successful.

Fishman: Yeah, you’re right. I think the two biggest [promoters] in the country are UFC and PRIDE. And PRIDE is just not well known enough over here in the United States because we’ve never been here. But you go to the rest of the world and mention PRIDE, and that’s it. As I told you, for my businesses I travel all over the world. And it was just by accident that I was introduced to PRIDE. As a matter of fact, when I was there the first time four years ago, Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta were sitting two seats away from me. So I was happy to see them. At that particular time I needed to know about how strong they were with UFC.

Sherdog.com: I know you say you’re a newcomer to the sport, but for the health of the sport does it make a difference either way if PRIDE is sold to someone like you who is independent, isn’t connected to an MMA promotion, or the UFC, which seems to be growing larger and larger as a promoter of the sport?

Fishman: Well, I can only answer what I would do. I’m here to enlarge it. I’m there not to make it on cable, I’m here to put it on national TV. I’m interested in putting it in movies. I’m interested in bringing it to all the countries I told you before. All over the United States. All over the world. I’ve got the capacity, the capability and the contacts, just because of other businesses.

It’s not a question of money for either one of us. I can’t tell you what their plans are. Whether they’ll just fold it in and say “hey, listen, I’ve got all the contracts” and they’ll stop negotiations going. Or say “I’ll be able to do more fights because I have more fighters.” So they must have their own reasons. And I don’t know. I’ve never discussed it with them. But for me, it’s definitely expansion worldwide. And I have lots of offers in different places to go. And I would mount a very large crew to be doing simultaneously things very fast. I’ll end it with this. I still have that dream after seeing it of finding out who has the best fighters. And that would be my challenge immediately, to take our best four and they take their best four and winner takes all.

Sherdog.com: You know the Fertittas. Have you ever brought up that possibility up to them, and if you have what has been their response?

Fishman: First of all, I have never spoken to them except for saying “hello” at one of these events or when I pass by here in Vegas. Never have discussed MMA. I don’t know what their response would be. If they believe they do have better fighters, then they should accept it. It really would be the Super Bowl. I strongly believe that PRIDE does have the better fighters, and I think they at least agreed on one guy that they brought over for their last fight and paid much more than we paid him. So I know that they did that. I don’t really know if the UFC has offered to buy or not. And I don’t know what they would do with it. All I could tell you is my dream.

Mixed martial arts notebook UFC makes move toward domination
BRAD McCRAY

Dana White is still cordial. Now a celebrity, the president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship is still witty, still accommodating and still dropping casual expletives in interviews.

But there is new tension in his voice.

"We are going to war with everyone," White said. "We are going to hammer all these rinky-dink, fly-by-night organizations that are popping up trying to grab a piece of the pie."

The UFC, American's largest mixed-martial arts organization, is planning to make a run at the world. While other organizations are in disarray or still gaining a fan base, White plans to bring all the best fighters to the UFC and create a virtual monopoly on elite mixed martial arts worldwide. The UFC recently acquired high-profile Quinton "Rampage" Jackson by buying the World Fighting Alliance, an upstart federation. In December, it signed Croatia's Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic to a $2.4-million contract for two years.

"Bringing in guys like Mirko Cro Cop is just the beginning," White said. "We're going after everybody."

White confirmed the UFC is interested in Russia's Fedor Emelianenko, widely considered as the top fighter in the world, as well as popular Wanderlei Silva of Brazil.

White's philosophy is reminiscent of the World Wrestling Federation's rise to power in the mid-1980s when Vince McMahon Jr.'s national campaign all but eliminated many regional wrestling promotions. And the time could be right for the UFC's push. Japan's Pride Fighting Championships -- once considered the world's premier organization -- recently lost its television contract. The International Fight League has a quality product but a comparatively small fan base. The Showtime network also has thrown its hat into the MMA cage.

"Companies like these have been popping up for six years, but they don't have any real fighters and they don't know what it takes to succeed in this business," White said. "Now is the time to put the smack down."

By aggressively chasing the best fighters in other organizations, the UFC expects to silence critics contending that the UFC is merely style over substance. It also will make it more difficult for fledgling promotions to gain headway.

"The IFL hasn't affected our fan interest at all," White said. "And Showtime didn't even want to hear about MMA a few years ago. Believe me, I pitched it to everyone. A couple years ago, I sat down with them and they were laughing at the idea of a show on MMA. Now they are jumping in. It's crazy."

UFC 67: The UFC will unveil two of its newest acquisitions Saturday. Jackson (25-6) will fight 37-year-old Marvin Eastman (13-6-1) at light heavyweight (205 pounds) and Filipovic (21-4-2) will fight Eddie Sanchez (7-0) at heavyweight. Eastman beat Jackson in 2000.

"Guys love to avenge their losses," said White, who bristled at the notion of Eastman and Sanchez being put forth as punching bags for the UFC's new stars. "I learned a long time ago, you can't feed guys fights. I got burned too many times when I bet against Randy Couture. We put together fights that people want to see."

Filipovic, ranked by many as the No. 2 heavyweight in the world and one of the best strikers in any class, is already in line for a title shot if he gets by Sanchez.

In the main event, Anderson Silva (15-4) fights Travis Lutter (7-2) for the middleweight title. Silva will be making his first title defense. Lutter earned the title shot by winning "The Ultimate Fighter 4" television show.

INTERNATIONAL FIGHT LEAGUE: After concluding its first full season in December, the IFL begins a new season tonight in Houston with more teams and an expanded schedule. The IFL remains unique, applying a team scoring concept to MMA.

Tonight, the Tokyo Sabres fight the Arizona Scorpions and the Los Angeles Anacondas fight the Iowa Silverbacks.

In the event's "superfight," Portland's Matt Lindland (19-4) will take on former UFC champion Carlos Newton (13-11). Newton has lost four of his past five matches.

"I feel like I am the top 185-pounder in the world," said Lindland, a 2000 Olympic silver medalist. "I feel like I'm just getting to the top of my game. When I first started, I was just a wrestler, and I had to learn MMA as I went on."

The Portland Wolfpack, runners-up in 2006, will begin their season Feb. 23 against the Toronto Dragons in Atlanta.

Pequeno gives Shooto belt at TATAME

The TATAME magazine promoted yesterday (Friday) a meeting between the Shootoking Alexandre Pequeno and the Nova União leader André Pederneiras. Pequeno did met Dedé Pederneiras, who is the Shooto president in , to give him back his Shooto belt. Pequeno came to TATAME office to give his belt back and said that is pretty sad to do that. “It breaks my heart to give my belt back to Shooto, but I am training hard to get the Hero’s belt”, said Pequeno.

This decision must be done because of the Shooto rules. The organization says that when the champion loses, he should give the belt back for the event. Dedé Pederneiras said that unffortunally he had to follow the rules and that Pequeno ‘s action was the best decision for everyone. “Pequeno took like one year and a helf to ive this belt back, and the Japanese Shooto said that they wouldn’t call Brazilians athletes anymore if he takes more time”, explained André Pederneiras.

Rudimar Fedrigo

Leader of the one of the biggest academies of martial arts of the world, Rudimar Fedrigo did an exclusive interview to site TATAME at the new academy of Chute Boxe . Rudimar told us about his new Social Project, beyond talks about Wanderlei Silva bout at Pride Las Vegas against Dan Henderson and said: “I believe 100% at his victory by KO, and if the bout goes to the ground, don’t be surprised if Dan Henderson will be KO’d”, said Rudimar. Check out now the complete interview:

How it Works this Social Project of Chute Boxe?

The Social Project of the academy is all about the professors and the masters. We did the new academy with or own money, each one did a donation and the instructors will be given also by the professors. This is a project to popularize the martial arts; we will have as subjects martial arts. This is also an educational project. This popularization is also to discover new talents and to include the pupils into the bussiness market, and it will depend of each one, depends of the interest about the training. After five or six months, they will possible get a job. They will be able to do some classes supervisoned by a black belt athlete.

How is working this support?

Each one supports as they are able to. Some of them help giving some material, some other ones giving some classes. The top fighters will be used as examples, not just for the kid, because we will have athletes from all the ages. We are just discussing about what creterios we will use to choose the athletes, because the project is for free. The discipline will be hard.

And if some athlete has some problem out of the academy, as a street fight for example?

He will be deleted. This is the dangerous fact about teaching martial arts for free: we will never know why that person is learning that, to do what? So we will orient everything and every week we will do parents meeting, I will do that every Saturday. I want to meet their parents, know how their family life is.

And the athletes will have to be studying to be part of this project?

We will incentivate that, this is not obligated, but we will do that final speeches in each class to consciatizate them.

How do you see the fact that the Chute Boxe academy was choosen by the American websites as the academy most wanted by the athletes from all over the world?

This is a support. It is stimulizating for us to keep working inside the sport and for we can keep producing new athletes, because I thinks a lot about that. We are renovating, so I am preparing the athletes for the next two or three years. So we always want to keep our eyes on the academy and be always trying to give a better structure for all the athletes. Chute Boxe lives now a unique moment.

What about the new academy, how is that?

Master Rafael is the coordinator, responsible for the academy, his academy is here. The Chute Boxe is a academy group, but each filial has it own administration, they are independents about the money question. And he is here and he is a person that I really like, he always wants something else. I am really glad to be in an amazing place. The clime here is awesome, people from all over the city is coming here, everyone wants to train here. In the other academy we will finish now the second part, we will have almost an hotel, where people can stay paying some money, they will be able also o live at the academy.

Nowadays, how many athletes use the Chute Boxe flag?

Here in Curitiba there are almost 1 thousand. Each academy is reaching almost 300 pupils. There are three official academies more some other places where our athletes teach. We are also thinking about giving our big classes at some Gymnasium where fits everyone, because inside of the academies it is impossible. There are some pupils that must be out, they want to participate, but it is impossible.

What do you expect of the bout of Dan Henderson with Wanderlei? How is he getting prepared?

That will be an exciting bout. Henderson is a tough guy, it is not easy, but I believe 100% in Wanderlei’s victory by KO or submission. He is evoluting a lot under the BJJ. He has been submitting his adversaries at the trainings and if the bout goes to the ground, don’t get surprised if Dan Henderson will be submitted. Wanderlei is a MMA fighter; he will search the victory, standing up or on the ground.

Kickin It Results!

KICKIN IT STARTED THE YEAR WITH SOME MAJOR FIREWORKS. WITH THE FIRST SET OF ILLEGAL FIREWORKS GOING TO THE MANA KRYZKA AND DAMIEN GOMES MATCH. MANA RECEIVED A 3-POINT FEILD GOAL KICK TO THE GROIN FROM DAMIEN. THE NEXT ROUND CAME AND IT WAS MANAS TURN FOR HIS 3 POINTER TO DAMIENS FIELD GOAL POLE. THIS FIGHT WAS A BATTLE THAT WENT TO DAMIEN IN THE BEGINNING OF EACH ROUND. BUT MANA WAS THE SMARTER FIGHTER AND STOLE AWAY EACH ROUND RIGHT BEFORE IT ENDED.

THE MAIN EVENT WAS DEFINITELY ORIGINAL WITH BEN BEING LED BY HIS DANCE CREW (MOST WANTED). HIS CREW AND HIM DANCED ALL THE WAY TO THE RING AS IF THEY WERE GOING CLUBBING. OLAS ENTRANCE INCLUDED HIS ANIMAL HOUSE FLAG WHICH HE FOLLOWED BY AN ENTOURAGE OF FIGHTERS FROM ANIMAL HOUSE. THE FIGHT WAS SO INTENSE AND SO LOUD THAT IN THE SECOND ROUND, BEN COULD NOT HEAR HIS CORNER TELLING HIM TO MAKE HIS KICKS. THIS FIGHT HAD CRAZY FIRE POWER BUT BEN PULLED OUT A CONTROVERSIAL WIN.

BUT THE SHOWSTOPPERS WERE TONY AND KOICHI. THIS WAS THE 3RD TIME THESE TWO GUYS FOUGHT EACH OTHER. KOICHI CAME OUT FOCUSED AS ALWAYS. TONY PUT ON A SHOW FOR EVERY ONE WITH HIS ENTRANCE. WHEN THE BELL RANG, IT WAS ALL ABOUT GETTING RESPECT.
TONY CAME OUT WITH NOT JUST A CHIP ON HIS SHOULDER BUT THE WHOLE BAG OF CHIPS. AND KOICHI WAS ON A MISSION TO KNOCK IT OFF. IN THE END, TONY PULLED OUT THE WIN BUT ANNOUNCED TO EVERYONE THAT KOICHI EARNED HIS RESPECT FOR TAKING THIS FIGHT ON A 1 WEEK NOTICE AND PERFORMING LIKE A TRUE WARRIOR. TONY THEN ROSE KOICHIS GLOVE IN THE AIR AND DID A LAP AROUND THE RING WITH BOTH THEIR GLOVES RAISED. SPORTSMANSHIP AT ITS FINEST. CAUSE DAS HOW WE BE KICKIN IT.

UFC 67 FIGHTER SALARIES

MMAWeekly has obtained the fighter salary information for UFC 67, which took place this past Saturday in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The following figures are based on the fighter salary information that the UFC is required by law to submit to the state athletic commissions, including the winners' bonuses.

Although MMA fighters do not have collective bargaining or a union, the fighters' salaries are still public record, just as with every other major sport in the United States. Any undisclosed bonuses that the UFC also pays its fighters, but does not disclose to the athletic commissions (specifically, PPV bonuses for PPV main event fighters), are not included in the figures below. Also not reflected below are the taxes that the fighters have to pay.

In the listings below, "Title Match & Main Event Fighters" are defined as fighters who compete in the main event of a show and/or compete in a title fight on a show. "Main Card Fighters" are defined as fighters whose fights appear on the main card, but not in title fights or in the main event. "Preliminary Match Fighters" are defined as fighters whose matches take place before the live broadcast goes on the air, regardless of whether or not those matches end up airing on the PPV broadcast.

In addition, next to each fighter's name is the number of UFC fights that he has had, not counting fights that took place during TUF seasons because they are officially classified as exhibition fights.

Due to the fact that he failed to make weight for his fight against Anderson Silva, Travis Lutter was fined 10% of his pay. Since his pay was $20,000, the fine was $2,000. Of that amount, $1,000 went to the Nevada State Athletic Commission and $1,000 went to Anderson Silva for agreeing to fight Lutter even though Lutter hadn't made weight. These amounts are reflected in the salaries listed below for Silva and Lutter.

Title Match & Main Event Fighters

-Anderson Silva: $71,000 (3rd UFC fight; defeated Travis Lutter)

-Travis Lutter: $18,000 (5th UFC fight; lost to Anderson Silva)

Main Card Fighters

-Mirko Cro Cop: $350,000 flat fee (1st UFC fight; defeated Eddie Sanchez)

-Quinton Jackson: $170,000 (1st UFC fight; defeated Marvin Eastman)

-Marvin Eastman: $30,000 (3rd UFC fight; lost to Quinton Jackson)

-Patrick Cote: $20,000 (5th UFC fight; defeated Scott Smith)

-Scott Smith: $12,000 (3rd UFC fight; lost to Patrick Cote)

-Roger Huerta: $12,000 (2nd UFC fight; defeated John Halverson)

-John Halverson: $3,000 (1st UFC fight; lost to Roger Huerta)

Preliminary Match Fighters

-Lyoto Machida: $36,000 (1st UFC fight; defeated Sam Hoger)

-Jorge Rivera: $12,000 (7th UFC fight; lost to Terry Martin)

RANDY COUTURE OPENS XTREME GYM TODAY

Randy Couture has long been considered one of the smartest most adaptable fighters in mixed martial arts. As he has gotten a little bit older, the 43 year-old Couture has proven that his smarts and adaptability aren’t limited to his “in-ring” experiences, although he is making his return to the Octagon on March 3rd to challenge UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia.

Couture has long been a part of various other ventures outside of competing. He and longtime training partner Matt Lindland started their own fight promotion, Sportfight, several years ago and it is still going strong. Couture has also jumped into the supplement business with Couture Nutrition and is a part of the Legends Gym in downtown Hollywood, Calif.

Today, Couture opens his own gym, Xtreme Couture, in Las Vegas, Nev. The 11,000 square foot facility includes a 24 ft. Octagon, a 24 ft. ring, two mat areas with nearly 4,000 square feet of training space, free weights and other fitness equipment, and 24 Muay Thai bags.

Although many non-fighters can be a little intimidated when they consider training in mixed martial arts, Couture believes it is an idea who’s time has come and that the average person off the street need not be intimidated. "People are intimidated to come to an MMA gym. They think its all fighters and they’re going to get punched and beat up,” commented Couture.

But Couture was reassuring, “The biggest thing we tell people is that nobody has to get hit in the head here. It's about technique and training and getting the physical fitness and discipline from the sport and not actually having to get into the ring and spar unless that's what you want to do. Maybe you have that screw loose and want to get punched in the head. There are a few that come in that way, but the majority of the people don't want that."

"Our motto is ‘check your ego at the door,’" said Couture.

Of course, Couture himself will be teaching some of the classes and working with the professional fighters, but many of those fighters and other professional trainers will also be teaching at Xtreme Couture. Besides Couture, instructors include Mike Pyle, Jay Hieron, Gray Maynard, Ron Frazier and Harout Terzyan.

Xtreme Couture will also have a full pro shop that includes not only Randy Couture’s own gear, but items from Tapout, the UFC, Sinister Brand, Throwdown, Triggonomics, Natural Couture supplements, and more.

The grand opening is today, Saturday, Feb. 3rd at 4055 W. Sunset Rd., just across the freeway from the Mandalay Bay. As part of the weekend opening, Couture will also be hosting a Super Bowl party on Sunday at the gym.

Classes start on Monday, February 5th. For more information go to XtremeCouture.tv or call 702-616-1022.

BO CANTRELL WANTS A FAST FINISH AT ELITE XC

At February 10th’s EliteXC show there will be a multitude of fights that could have exciting endings. Perhaps most exciting could be the heavyweight match-up of two of California’s top prospects, Bo “Redrum” Cantrell and Tim “Big Perm” Persey.

Fans of the Gladiator Challenge shows will instantly recognize Cantrell’s name. He’s the promotion’s reining Heavyweight Champion for over a year and went undefeated in that time, dominating his fights.

“I feel I had a pretty good year last year,” said Bo of his 2006. “I went 5-0 and defended my Gladiator [Challenge Heavyweight Championship] belt five times against pretty tough opposition. I got my knockouts in quick fights that I trained hard for.”

Cantrell added, “I think I might have had a total of six minutes [fighting] in five fights I had. That’s just showing my tenacity and aggressiveness. When I fight I try to end it. I’m not trying to look pretty, I’m trying to end the fight the quickest way I can, and that’s what I think makes me an exciting fighter.”

The year was Bo’s busiest, and according to him, the consistent schedule was a welcomed change that paid big dividends.

“I stayed busy and kept my momentum up the whole year,” exclaimed Cantrell. “In the past I was fighting once every three-to-four months and so I stopped training so I could spend some time with my family and then have to get back in the swing of things.”

“This time, I pretty much trained the whole year and it was a big reason for my success. I was in tip-top shape the whole year and didn’t let myself get lazy, not once,” continued Bo.

That training comes under the watchful eye of Tim Marinoble, one of the sport’s emerging premier trainers, having worked with the likes of WEC 145lb Champion Urijah Faber and UFC veteran James “Sandman” Irvin.

Under Marinoble’s tutelage Cantrell feels he’s able to grow on a daily basis, something that not many fighters get an opportunity to do.

“When I train, I train everything – jiu-jitsu, stand-up, defending the takedown, on my back – I think as a fighter I’m growing every day and learning,” commented Bo. “Mr. Marinoble is very good about teaching me something every day that’s new to me, and that’s why I like him. I feel like at the end of the day that I picked something up that I can use in my arsenal.”

It’s Cantrell’s impressive arsenal that has helped him land a spot in EliteXC, MMA’s newest and possibly next big promotion, to be carried on the Showtime, one of pay-television’s biggest networks.

Having an opportunity to fight on such a stage has Bo, a former Marine helicopter machine gunner, feeling blessed and genuinely excited to be able to showcase his skills at the next level.

“I feel privileged and I appreciate it,” obliged Cantrell. “There’s so many shows out there with talented, good, up-and-coming fighters, so for me to get my break – and earned it – when they could have called so many other fighters, it’s an honor.”

Bo further commented, “MMA has grown and more big shows are going on and it’s good for the fighters that have been paying their dues for years. To be part of something like the first primetime MMA show on Showtime, it makes me feel so grateful and privileged to be part of something like that, it’s huge.”

At EliteXC Cantrell will be matching up with fellow Californian heavyweight prospect Tim “Big Perm” Persey. Tim is a one-time training partner of current UFC star Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and is a member of Team Oyama, headed by elite trainer Colin Oyama.

Coming from the same state, Bo is familiar with his opponent and even had the opportunity to see him fight up close and personal.

“I’ve actually seen Big Perm fight in person,” explained Cantrell. “I saw him fight Rocky Batastini on a Gladiator Challenge show; I was actually judging that fight. He’s a big, strong man and seems pretty confident when he’s in there. I think it’s going to be an interesting fight.”

“I think he will stand up with me and I think he’ll bring it. I know he trains hard. He had a stint with Quinton Jackson, so he’s got good wrestling and has a good camp. I know he’ll be ready I’m looking forward to one hell of a fight,” continued Bo.

With his success on a local level already cemented, Cantrell is looking to use EliteXC to break onto the national level, and should all go well against Persey, continue to move up the ranks to the worldwide stage.

“I’m not looking past Big Perm at all, but I’ve thought about that,” admitted Bo. “I know as you grow as a fighter that the challenges ahead of you become tougher. I’m just curious to know where I’m at. You’re only as good as the people you train with and the people you fight. I want to be, one day, one of the fighters that people talk about as one of the best in the world.”

Bo added, “Hopefully MMA gets to a point where it’s not just the UFC or PRIDE, I mean, I want to be on all stages. Call me greedy, but I want to be able to fight everywhere. I’d love to fight overseas, like in Japan, they love fighting and have a lot admiration for the fighters, so to be part of that would be fine with me.”

So when fans login to www.ProElite.com to checkout the live undercard via streaming video, be sure to not to miss what could be a heavyweight explosion when Bo Cantrell and Tim Persey match-up. As Cantrell himself says, it’s not going to be a fight you’ll want to miss.

“I want give a shout-out to: Roseville Hyundai, The Body Shop, Full Contact Fighter, Fairtex, Marinoble’s – Dave Marinoble – my trainer, my wife, my son Xander, my daughter Lilly, my entire family and my fans,” said Bo. "The show’s going to be worth the money, it’s going to be worth getting Showtime if you don’t have it just for that.”

“It’s going to be worth it, because I don’t know about the other fights, but our fight [Bo vs. Big Perm] is going to be one of the most exciting fights on the show. I hope he brings it, because I’ll bring it. It’s not going to a decision, it’s definitely going to end before three rounds [are up],” concluded Cantrell.

UFC 67 Full Results: Cro Cop & Rampage Don't Disappoint

The UFC made the announcement to the pay per view audience via Mike Goldberg. They showed an interview with a dejected Travis Lutter and then with Anderson Silva who felt very disrespected that his opponent did not make weight.

I never get tired of seeing that Pete Sell knockout by Scott Smith. I had a feeling here that maybe Patrick Cote might end up with the same fate if he did not take this to the ground quickly.

The new formats for the names and information shows an obvious similarity to other major sports.
.
Scott Smith vs. Patrick Cote

+ Round 1 - Cote lands a nice leg kick and then another shortly after. Patrick landed a nice a body shot. Smith looks frustrated and then charges with a flurry. They lock up against the fence and as they release Scott lands a big right hand. They clinch and Scott lands some good shots only to get tossed around by Cote’s clinch. Patrick slams Smith down and starts raining down shots. Scott showed he has improved here and stands right back up. The round ends with both fighters throwing lazy jabs. I scored the round 10-9 for Cote.

+ Round 2 – Cote leg kicks. Smith rushes and lands some good shots. Patrick pushes Smith up against the fence looks to take Scott down. The referee separates them and then Cote almost drops Scott Smith who then starts acting like he is the Karate Kid in a very bizarre exchange. Joe Rogan was as confused as I was about Cote not trying to finish. Cote is content to just jab and throw some leg kicks. The round ends with Cote looking tentative and unwilling to exchange. I score the rounf 10-9 for Cote.

+ Round 3 – Big exchange and Smith gets the better of it. Scott Smith actually attempts a takedown on Cote. The referee resets them after they are inactive against the fence. Patrick lands some leg kicks and Smith looks to be picking his shots. Cote starts pressing the pace and then unloads with a quick flurry. Smith presses forward and lands a flurry of his own. He cannot take Patrick down again and they are reset yet again for inactivity. They explode and trade punches with Smith rocking Cote. The two fighters are pressed against the cage with no one really doing anything. Patrick flurries, but there is nothing there. The round ends with Cote celebrating and the crowd booing heavily. I scored that round 10-9 Smith.

Eddie Bravo scores the fight 30-27 for Cote. I scored the fight 29-28 Cote.

Official result – 30-27 for Patrick Cote and he gets his first official win.

Quinton Jackson vs. Marvin Eastman

Note: Rampage spent a bit of time listening to Tito Ortiz at ringside. He also looked a little nervous as he entered the Octagon. Marvin and Rampage had an intense stare down.

+ Round 1 - Eastman comes out looking to throw. Eastman lands some good jabs. They lock up and Rampage scores with an uppercut. Good knees by Jackson. Eastman pushes Quinton against the cage and leans on him. Jackson looks to trade now. Eastman shoots and it is quickly stuffed by Jackson. Eastman unloads with a good flurry. Rampage lets his hands fly and connects with a few. It looks like Jackson is uncomfortable with the cage. Jackson rocks Eastman with a big left hand and tries to finish as the time runs out. I scored the round 10-9 Jackson.

+ Round 2 – They exchange some small shots and them they are up against the fence again. Rampage pushes off and they are in the center of the Octagon. Rampage and Marvin both look like they are having trouble landing punches. A big right hook lands on Eastman’s head from Jackson. Rampage gets thumbed in the eye twice in this round. Jackson lands with some big uppercuts and knocks Marvin out cold.

Winner by KO – Quinton “Rampage” Jackson

Rampage states that he loves Marvin, but he said it was time for some “black on black crime” and then offers to take Chuck out for drinks at the after party.

Roger Huerta vs. John Halverson

+ Round 1 – Huerta and Halverson explode with Huerta grabbing a kick by John and taking him down. Huerta moves in and appears to inadvertently knee Halverson in the head rocking him badly and forcing the referee to stop the fight.

Winner by KO – Roger Huerta

Note: The replay appeared to show the knee landing to Halverson’s shoulder as Huerta claimed it did in the post fight interview. Randy Couture joins the booth for the up coming Cro Cop fight.

Mirko Cro Cop vs. Eddie Sanchez

Note: Cro Cop makes his way to the cage very quickly and extremely confident.

+ Round 1 – Sanchez rushes and Cro Cop lands a left hand. Cro Cop lands a body kick and then lands another left hand that staggers Eddie. Sanchez lands a punch in return. Another straight left hand from Cro Cop. Left high kick that lands on the top Eddie’s head by Cro Cop. Sanchez lands a left hand again. Cro Cop rocks Sanchez one more time. HUGE right leg kick from Cro Cop. Cro Cop knocks him down with a big left hand and mounts him landing big punches. Mirko continues to pummel Sanchez and the referee mercifully steps in to stop it.

Winner by KO – Mirko Cro Cop

Anderson Silva vs. Travis Lutter (Non-title fight)

Note: Lutter approached the cage with a very dejected look on his face. He couldn’t even look in the fans eyes for more than a few seconds. He was booed heavily by the fans in attendance, most likely for not making weight.

+ Round 1 – Circling for 30 seconds. Lutter owns the center of the octagon. Silva stuffs two takedowns. Silva starts measuring and then throws a high kick. Lutter eats it, but takes him down anyway. Lutter in guard and dropping body shots. Anderson locks in a body triangle, but can’t hold it. Silva gets up, but gets taken down again. Silva attempts an arm bar. Lutter passes guard and gets in side control then gets the mount and drops bombs. Lutter attempts another takedown, but cannot make it stick. Silva narrowly misses with a stomp kick. I scored the round 10-9 for Lutter.

+ Round 2 – Lutter takes Silva down again right off the bat. As Lutter tries to pass guard he gets caught in a deep triangle choke from a setup by an upkick. But he is partially blocking it. Lutter’s whole body is turning red, but Silva cannot finish him. Silva is nearly illegally spiking Travis in the back of the head with elbows and Lutter taps out.

Winner by submission – Anderson Silva

It was a so-so night of fights for the UFC. Mirko Cro Cop and Quinton Jackson definitely made the night for me and most fans who watched this PPV.

Note: Wesley Snipes is in the crowd and I cannot imagine Joe Rogan is not thinking of issuing his fight challenge again, this time personally to the movie star.

UFC 67 FULL REVIEW: SILVA, CRO COP, JACKSON WIN

Heavily favored Anderson Silva, Mirko Cro Cop, and Quinton Jackson each won their respective fights at UFC 67 in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday night.

One and a half pounds turned a contender into a pretender on the day before UFC 67 when Travis Lutter failed to make weight for his UFC Middleweight Title bout against Anderson Silva. After the fight, Lutter left the Octagon without a title and with a submission loss to the Middleweight Champion of the UFC, Anderson Silva.

It was clear to everyone before the bout that Lutter, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, would try to take this fight to the ground, where he believed he would have the advantage.

After a spectacular-looking flying knee from Silva grazed Lutter's head, Lutter put Silva on his back and tried to ply his trade on the ground. It was Silva’s bodylock and tight guard that initially prevented Lutter from getting much of advantage on the ground.

The Ultimate Fighter Season 4 winner did eventually get the full mount, where he started to reign down punches on the champion. At one point towards the end of the first round, Lutter landed several heavy punches on Silva from the full mount, but Silva’s long legs eventually came to the forefront, as he swept Lutter and got out of the bad position.

In the second round, the opening was much the same with Lutter taking Silva down and trying to pass his guard, but this time Lutter got caught with an up-kick from Silva and found himself in a triangle choke from the #2 middleweight in the world.

Silva tightened his grip in an attempt to choke Lutter out, but Lutter stayed in the move for an extended period of time, relieving the pressure on his throat by pushing on the side of his own head with his hand.

Finally, while still in the triangle choke position, Silva landed some wicked elbows to the top of Lutter's head, which prompted Lutter to finally tap out. With the win, Anderson Silva now moves to 3-0 in the UFC and also proves that he is not only the most dangerous striker at 185 pounds, but very skilled on the ground as well.

The UFC heavyweight division has taken much criticism over the past few years for the lack of overall talent being developed. The addition of Mirko Cro Cop, who is the #2 heavyweight in the world according to the MMAWeekly Rankings, boosted the UFC's heavyweight division instantly. In many people’s minds, Cro Cop's entry into the UFC put a ticking timer on how long it would take for the Croatian to hold the UFC Heavyweight Title.

The first stepping stone on Cro Cop’s road to the title was Eddie Sanchez, who entered the fight with a UFC record of 1-0, an MMA record of 8-0, and a complete understanding of the fact that he would be a tremendous underdog against one of the most dangerous fighters on the planet. The fight appeared to be a mismatch going in, and it appeared to be even more of a mismatch once the action got underway.

It was very apparent early on that Sanchez pinned his hopes of winning the fight on the possibility of a big haymaker landing on a fighter who is widely seen as the best striker in the business. Cro Cop literally stalked a backpedalling Eddie Sanchez throughout the fight and managed to throw some pinpoint jabs, as well as a few of his signature kicks. One particular leg kick sounded like a baseball bat slamming into Sanchez’s thigh, and the crowd reacted with shock at the kick's enormous impact.

Cro Cop simply overmatched his opponent with fast hands and even threw a left high kick (which landed, but didn't knock out Sanchez as many thought it would). With about a minute left in round one, a punch from Cro Cop floored Sanchez, and this time Cro Cop would follow Sanchez to the ground.

Cro Cop moved from side control to mount, where he landed strikes on the ground until referee Steve Mazzagatti stepped in to stop the bout. It might have been seen as a premature stoppage with different fighters in the ring, but it was completely justified in such a mismatch, and Sanchez did not protest the stoppage at all.

Cro Cop has now put his UFC debut behind him, and the timer moves that much faster for the championship bout that Mirko is sure to get very soon.

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson made his long-awaited debut in the Octagon a successful one, as he defeated Marvin Eastman in another fairly one-sided fight. The fight never went to the ground until the very end, as both fighters were unsuccessful in their takedown attempts, and Jackson out-performed Eastman in the stand-up exchange.

Jackson, the #7 light heavyweight in the MMAWeekly Rankings, landed crisper shots from the outside and also landed some knees and punches from the clinch. After an uneventful first round, Jackson stunned Eastman with uppercuts from the clinch and won by TKO in the second round.

Jackson admitted after the fight that he had never been so nervous before a bout, but he was happy to get past this one unscathed. He also commented that it was the first time in his career that he had ever been booed during a fight, and he added that he feels as though he needs another fight before he takes on Chuck Liddell for the UFC Light Heavyweight Title. Liddell was shown at ringside during the bout and appeared to be rooting for Rampage, who gave Liddell his last loss back in 2003.

Roger Huerta won his fight against the debuting John Halverson, but not without some controversy, which may call the Nevada State Athletic Commission into action. As the fight opened, Halverson shot in on Huerta, who defended the takedown effectively.

Huerta then landed what appeared to be a knee to the head while Halverson was on the ground, which would be illegal under the Unified MMA Rules that have been in place in the United States since 2000. Referee Yves Lavigne could be heard on the PPV broadcast warning Huerta about the illegal knee to the head on the ground, as Lavigne said, "Watch the knee to the head!"

When the knee landed, Halverson's body went limp and he was pretty much out, at which point Huerta got in the rear mount position and landed about 15 punches to the head of the defenseless Halverson before the referee stopped the fight. Huerta was given the win by TKO, despite the fact that the referee had just warned Huerta for the illegal knee that knocked Halverson out.

In the post-fight interview, Huerta said that he landed the knee to the shoulder, not the head. Upon inspecting the slow-motion instant replay with a Tivo on a frame-by-frame basis, it's still not completely clear, as part of the knee appeared to land on Halverson's head and part of the knee appeared to land on Halverson's shoulder.

In any case, it appeared that any foul on Huerta's part was purely accidental, as he definitely appeared to be aiming for Halverson's shoulder. It's just a question of whether part of Huerta's knee connected with Halverson's head instead of his shoulder.

The result of this bout may or may not be changed to a no-contest at a later date, depending on what the Nevada State Athletic Commission decides.

In the opening fight of the PPV broadcast, Patrick Cote was finally able to secure his first official win in the UFC (his two wins on TUF 4 are technically considered "exhibition bouts"), as Cote defeated Scott Smith by unanimous decision. In his prior UFC fights, Cote performed well against fighters like Tito Ortiz, Joe Doerksen, and Chris Leben, but he came up on the losing end of every one of those bouts.

Cote showed superior striking in the bout, opening with leg kicks and then using a very effective jab during the fight. In the second round, Cote appeared to stun Smith with a big punch and everyone jumped in anticipation of Cote pouncing on Smith, but unfortunately he didn’t and the fight continued. After the finish, Cote admitted that he thought Smith would uncork a right hand, reminiscent of the shot that finished Pete Sell in their match-up.

Cote was definitely the better striker and won the fight on all three judges' scorecards. The crowd booed heavily, not because they disagreed with the judges' decision, but because they did not find the fight very exciting. In a funny moment during the post-fight interview, Cote was thanking all of his training partners and then he added, "Thanks also to everyone who is booing me right now! I'm going to be back and then you can come back and boo me again!"

If you stopped watching the pay-per-view broadcast immediately after the main event, you missed one of the best fights of the night, as Frank Edgar and Tyson Griffin stole the show with a sensational preliminary bout that Edgar won by unanimous decision. These two undefeated lightweight fighters put on a heck of a show with a back-and-forth contest in which both fighters displayed great skill in kickboxing, wrestling, submissions, and submission defense.

The stand-up exchanges and ground transitions offered the kind of competitive action that was largely absent from the top three bouts on the card. Edgar ultimately won the fight, but not before appearing to almost having his leg broken in the process.

For most of the fight, it was a closely contested struggle that Edgar appeared to be winning by a slight margin. With less than one minute left in the fight and Edgar seemingly ahead on the scorecards, Griffin applied a sick kneebar. Edgar skillfully rolled out of it as much as he could to relieve the pressure, but even then, the torque on his knee was nasty-looking. Edgar punched away at Griffin's thigh and managed to hang on until the bell rang to end the fight.

The judges gave the fight to Edgar (29-28, 29-28, 30-27), handing Griffin the first loss of his MMA career. Both of these fighters looked like they have the potential to be future stars in the lightweight division.

In the other preliminary bout that aired after the main event, Terry Martin won his first UFC middleweight bout, as he knocked out Jorge Rivera in just 14 seconds. Martin had previously gone 0-2 in the UFC's light heavyweight division, but a newly slimmed down Martin said confidently before the fight that nobody would be able to handle his punching power in the 185-pound division. He was correct on this particular night, as Martin decimated a highly respected fighter in Jorge Rivera.

Rivera landed a leg kick in the opening seconds of the bout, but when Rivera threw a high kick a few seconds later, Martin caught the kick with his arms and landed a brutal punch to the side of Rivera's head. Rivera went down with Martin on top of him as if Martin had gotten a takedown, but in fact Rivera was almost completely out as a result of Martin's punch.

When the two fighters hit the ground with Martin on top, Martin landed two punches to the head almost instantaneously, and referee Herb Dean showed why he is one of the best in the business as he stopped the fight and spared the unconscious Rivera from any further punishment.

Martin said in the post-fight interview that he wants his next fight to be against Mike Swick. MMAWeekly's Rumors section lists Swick on the UFC's April 7th pay-per-view line-up facing Yushin Okami, who is 3-0 in the UFC.

In one of the two prelim bouts that did not air on the PPV broadcast, Ryoto Machida made his UFC debut and beat TUF 1 contestant Sam Hoger by unanimous decision. It was Hoger's first fight since a controversial decision loss to Rashad Evans last April, and Machida's first fight since a one-sided decision victory over Vernon "Tiger" White last July.

Hoger and Machida came out ready to fight, and Machida got the upper hand by knocking Hoger down with punches in the first round, then knocking him down again with leg kicks in the second round, and then once again with punches in the third round. Hoger put on a gutsy performance in withstanding Machida's Muay Thai onslaught, but it was Machida who won the fight by unanimous decision in his impressive UFC debut.

In the other preliminary bout that did not air on the PPV broadcast, Dustin Hazelett defeated Diego Saraiva by unanimous decision. Hazelett won the first two rounds with his ground and pound offense. The action picked up in round three, as Saraiva landed a high kick and Hazelett responded by landing a high kick of his own and then knocking down Saraiva with a knee from the Thai clinch. Hazelett won the fight in a clear-cut unanimous decision.

UFC 67 didn’t feature any title fights, but we did get the chance to see Anderson Silva display his versatility in a bout that does earn Fight of the Night honors. To Travis Lutter’s credit, despite not making weight to get a title shot, he did fight pretty well and should be commended for his performance. Silva reaffirmed the fact that he deserves to be the UFC Middleweight Champion, and it may be a long while before anyone else will hold that title.

It's hard not to automatically want to hand Fighter of the Night honors to either Mirko Cro Cop or Quinton Jackson since their respective UFC debuts were so one-sided. Jackson had the tougher fight against Eastman, while CroCop simply outmatched his opponent, Eddie Sanchez. But Fighter of the Night to Anderson Silva, who once again showed that he may be a step or two above the rest of the 185-pound class in the UFC by submitting a dominant ground fighter like Travis Lutter.

HIERON TALKS IFL WIN & XTREME COUTURE GYM

This past Friday the IFL’s Los Angeles Anacondas made history, becoming the first team to defeat the two-time defending IFL Champion Quad Cities Silverbacks at their 2007 season opener in Houston, Texas.

A key part of the Anaconda’s victory is welterweight Jay Hieron, who rebounded off his tough loss in the IFL semi-finals last year to Chris Wilson of the Wolfpack, to defeat late replacement Victor Moreno en route to the Anacondas’ 3-2 victory.

“It feels great,” exclaimed Jay of his team’s win. “We worked hard, because we came up short in Portland, so there’s no better feeling than to take out the champs. We did that convincingly, every fight was good, and I’m proud of my team, myself and my coaches.”

Hieron is not only pleased with his team’s performances, but he himself had an impressive showing against Moreno.

“I didn’t know much about him, but that’s the fight game, I’m a professional and I was ready for anybody they put in front of me,” commented Jay. “I went in, did my job and took him out quick. I felt good and everything felt on-point: my striking, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, every aspect of my game felt good and it showed that night.”

Hieron continued, “I went out and established my striking and he didn’t want any part of that, so we went to the ground. I started softening him up on top [position], he turned his back and I took the choke. I’ll always say I’ll take what a guy gives me [in a fight].”

With the win, the Anacondas now seem like the team to beat in the 2007 season. It’s a fact that’s not lost on Jay, but he knows better than to get complacent being on top.

“Right now I think people are going to be gunning for us because we just beat the Silverbacks,” said Hieron. “So we’re going to train just as hard – if not harder now – because we’ve got to stay on top of our game, because it’s easy for the guys on top to fall.”

“We definitely feel that we’re running in the top contender category, but we take each match one at a time. We’re not looking past any team; we have to take it one team at a time and train just as hard for everybody,” added Jay.

With one IFL show down, Hieron’s focus for the time being has shifted towards the opening of the Xtreme Couture gym in Las Vegas, named after, owned, and operated by soon-to-be-returning-to-action MMA legend Randy Couture.

Not only will Jay be training at Xtreme Couture, but he’ll also be one of the instructors that people can learn from and train with on an almost daily basis.

“I’m blessed to be a part of Xtreme Couture,” exalted Hieron. “Everything in my life is good right now, so all I want to do is keep working hard and fulfilling my goals. The facility has been great for us, and everything is in one place, which I haven’t had before.”

Jay continued, “I used to have to run all over to a couple different places all day, but now I have everything in one place and it’s a great, unbelievable feeling. I’m also going to be one of the trainers in there and I’m happy to show some of my skills and give back to people that want to learn.”

Always a gracious individual, Hieron wanted to make sure to get in a word for those who’ve helped make his year so far a great one and to remind people to keep their eyes open for the Anacondas and to check out Xtreme Couture.

“Thanks to my team, all my training partners and all the fans for supporting us,” concluded Jay. “Without the fans we couldn’t do the things we do today. Check out the Anacondas [match with the Silverbacks] on FSN and [our match versus the Razorclaws] on March 17th in LA. And anybody in Las Vegas come out to Xtreme Couture, sign up and train with us.”

Q&A with Trevor Garrett
By Ray

On February 9th, Trevor Garrett stands in Robbie Lawler's path to reclaim the
Icon Sport Middleweight title. While a win over Lawler won't guarantee Garrett a title shot, Garrett will surely fly up the ranks if he defeats the former champion.

MMAFighting.com: How do you think you match up with Robbie Lawler style-wise?

Trevor Garrett: I think we match up great, we are both very explosive and heavy handed.

MMAFighting.com: There are already plans for Lawler to fight Trigg for the title in April if he wins this fight. How do you feel going into this as an underdog?

TG: I'm used to it, I'm not saying I'm not good, it's just I have fought many well known fighters. I can pull off some upsets.

MMAFighting.com: You sport an overall record of 6-9. What might not be apparent is that half your fights were against tough competition. Can you tell us why fans should expect a much better fighter than the one they see on paper?

TG: Actually everyone is going to see a much better fighter, I have been working with a guy named Garth Krane, he cleaned my whole entire game up. All I needed to learn was to stay out of that dangerous rear naked choke, and I did. It was just a lack of skill at the beginning, I thought I could just bully people around. I learned that's not the answer.

MMAFighting.com: Tell us about your training in Ohio.

TG: I train at the Killing Fields with Garth Krane and Chris Stivers. Garth has me cleaned up with no sloppy punches anymore [laughs]. We are training in every aspect. I will be improved and shocking him wherever we go.

MMAFighting.com: What will you be doing once you arrive in Hawaii?

TG: Getting used to the 6-hour time change, just relaxing and some fine tuning.

MMAFighting.com: You've fought mostly around welterweight and middleweight. Which division do you feel more comfortable in?

TG: Welterweight, I'm eating cleaner than I did in the past. I feel way faster at that weight. I can just walk around at 180 now. Unlike before where I would always eat double cheeseburgers all day for a dollar [laughs].

MMAFighting.com: Congratulations on recently becoming a father.

TG: Thank you very much.

MMAFighting.com: How's the parenting life treating you?

TG: It's great! Definitely with the help of my awesome wife Amanda, she understands I have to train for this fight a little more. In the morning I lay Pixie down with a blanket on the mats at the gym and she just watches me train. That helps push me.

MMAFighting.com: Any closing words for the fans before this show?

TG: Yes, thanks to all you guys and ladies the sport is growing so big. Thanks for everyone's support, we will give everyone a great show. I would like to thank Headblade, Sprawl, Wired energy drinks, Six Deuce, and Gladiator mouth guards.

Assuério Silva at UFC 68
The Brazilian has yet to win in octagon

The end of the year was a victorious one for Assuério Silva. With triumphs over Eduardo Maiorino (Show Fight 5) and Igor Pokrajac (Jungle Fight 7), the fighter ended the year that had not been turning out to be one of the best, as he was coming off two losses (one to Tim Sylvia and the other to Brandon Vera) from both of his appearances in the UFC.

It seems, though, that Assuério will have another chance to show his talent in the American octagon. Although the organizers of the event have not yet made an official announcement, his presence on the card his name on the card has been mentioned as being a certainty for UFC 68, set for March 3, in Ohio. Mixed Martial Arts--- Fighter Salary Breakdown for First Zuffa-Owned WEC Event
by Ivan Trembow
Originally Published on MMAWeekly

MMAWeekly has obtained the fighter salary information for the WEC event that took place this past Saturday night, January 20th, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event was the WEC's first in Las Vegas and also the WEC's first since being purchased by Zuffa, the same company that owns the UFC.

The following figures are based on the fighter salary information that Zuffa and the WEC are required by law to submit to the state athletic commissions, including the winners' bonuses.

Although MMA fighters do not have collective bargaining or a union, the fighters' salaries are still public record, just as with every other major sport in the United States. Any undisclosed bonuses that Zuffa and the WEC also pay its fighters, but do not disclose to the athletic commissions (specifically, PPV bonuses for the top PPV main event fighters, which would not apply since this event was not on PPV), are not included in the figures below.

In the listings below, "Title Match & Main Event Fighters" are defined as fighters who compete in the main event of a show and/or compete in a title fight on a show. "Preliminary Match Fights" are fights that are taped before a show goes on the air, and since this show hasn't aired on TV or PPV, all of the non-main event fights are defined as "Main Card Fights."

Highlights from this event will air this summer on one of the WEC's hour-long highlight shows on the Versus Network, which is available in approximately 70 million U.S. households.

Vitor Belfort interview
The sum of a 10 year career

The star says he performed at 10% against Henderson and remembers the best and worst moments after a decade of MMA

Vitor Belfort was anxious upon entering the ring, in the United States. With the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team in the audience, including Shaquille O'Neal and Magic Johnson, the Carlson Gracie black belt stops his American rival in a shocking 12 seconds.

Ten years later, at Pride USA, Victor has a series of reasons for celebrating a decade-long career, which began with that massacre at SuperBrawl 2, against Jon Hess, on October 11th, 1996. The problem is that Dan Henderson did not help, and Vitor loses, on October 21st, by unanimous decision, in his eighth loss in 22 fights, the fifth defeat in the last seven fights. To make matters worse, the fighter, now 29 years old, found himself being accused of doping at Pride. "All I took was a supplement, called Max Tribostak, I got from a Max Muscle store, in La Habra, California. I had no idea a supplement could contain a substance that is illegal in Nevada, he states, already at home in Brazil. Now having moved from Belo Horizonte back to Rio, Vitor analyzed, in exclusive testimony, not only his loss to Hendo, but also his career and life over these ten years in which he helped write the history of MMA.

What did you think of your performance against Henderson, at Pride in Las Vegas?
I performed at 10% of what I could have, and that bugs me. Dan Henderson is good, but I was sad about what I didn’t deliver. Losses are always bothersome, but this was one of the worst performances of my life. I am disappointed because it has been years since my sister Priscila's kidnap [died in 2004], and I still haven't been able to perform well in the ring. Those who make a living from fighting know that the psychological side of things is vital. It’s been a series of things, but I have even come to fear the big city, in Rio and São Paulo, because of the violence and traumas I have suffered, some of which I don’t even mention. For this reason I have taken refuge in Minas Gerais. But now I think it is time to return to the scene. Back in Rio I will have more training infrastructure and can rediscover my roots. As Carlson said, the lion must be among the beasts

How is your new team, Black House, of Joinha in partnership with Carlão Barreto?
Now I will sum it up. Carlão has a history with me, since the days with Carlson, as we were both the MMA precursors of the team. The academy X-Gym, in Recreio, is perfect, we will be a true team, and with everything in black and white. The trainers I had were excellent, but the team was missing to provide shelter, incentive, adding pleasure to training.

Do you manage to train with the same happiness as you did ten years ago?
I was managing to maintain the same happiness, but there was a time when I was disappointed with the world of MMA and lost my appetite. This disappointment sapped my desire, snuffed out the fire that motivated me. With all that maybe I didn't train adequately sometimes.

These days do you enjoy fighting?
I had several options for sports in the beginning of my career: volleyball, soccer, tennis. Why did I opt to fight? For the pleasure. Carlson was important in my life. His presence was a great motivation for me, and Carlson’s team was very much united, each member valued, I loved being there with them. At that time I was a lion when I trained, competed, prepared myself to fight. Today I can still be, but I’ve lost some stimulus, because I am a person that is sensitive to what happens around me.

In training do you still run everybody over the way you used to?
As Dorea, my boxing coach, says, “We need to take the Vitor from training to competition!” What I need is to motivate myself. After all, the most difficult times are what make the changes in us. Part of life is to make mistakes, lower your head and get back on top. I have the strength to overcome it all.

What motivated you when you started, ten years ago?
My motivation when I was 18, 19 years old, was to prove the effectiveness of Jiu-Jitsu, show the value of Carlson and the Gracie family. As time passed and I became more professional, I suffered great disappointments in the fight world, and everything started deteriorating. The levels of motivation drops, it is like a snowball effect. I know it is my job to fight, but that is not all: my millions of fans around the world see that the real Vitor is not fighting, and that makes me sad. At the same time, that is what motivates me. I am not ashamed to say I went through tough times, and not found my style in the ring. Now I want to rescue what there is within me that is missing to put on great shows. Talent and the trust of the team I have, I just need to wipe the ghosts from my head.

What was the happiest day of your career?
All of them… But there was the day at UFC 12, in Alabama [February 7, 1997]. Carlson didn’t have his due recognition in the USA, and after my victory, I, at 19 years of age, was able to help him to be recognized the world over. Wherever we went, we were recognized. That marked me.I want to go back to that phase. [Belfort ran Tra Telligman and Scott Ferrozzo over in the same night, in 1 min 17 secs and 43 secs respectively].

What do you remember of your first fight, in the ring at Super Brawl, in Hawaii?
I remember that, at the weigh in, Magic Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal bet a rolex on the fight. One of them even asked me how I could beat the big guy, and Carlson responded with a classic, “It’s no problem because the king of the jungle is the lion, not the elephant!” Only the winner would take the 10,000 dollar prize. It was a savage time, no holds were barred, and Jon Hess said he would stick a finger in my eye. I was 18 years old, I was terrified (laughs). But Carlson made me feel absurdly confident, and told my opponent: “You want to go in armed? Take a knife, we will let you!”

How do you see your future?
I tell my fans I will know throw away what I have built over my career. I am re-evaluating my career path and will fight for my team, for me and for my fans. The outcome, the belts and the money, all are just consequences. I want to be an inspiration to my fans and teach good things even to my opponents. Whoever gets to the top must not step on the heads of whoever is below. The fighter goes through several phases, and the true champion cannot belittle the rest, but teach all others.

Your son Davi is almost two years old. Do you encourage him to be a fighter?
He already hits the bag, he has his little gloves. He also swims, plays soccer, tennis, volleyball. He has adeptness for sports. If he becomes a fighter, at least I will be able to help him avoid some of the things I went through. But if he wants to be a lawyer, doctor, economist, musician, I will encourage him as well.

UFC Roster Packs a Bigger Punch (and Slam)
with New Additions

By Derek Callahan

Gone are the days of stellar cards with all big-name fighters in the UFC, but so goes with the territory of free and frequent events. With their February 3rd Pay-Per-View show, the UFC seems to be finding a happy medium between stacked cards and weak showings. Some fights are intriguing, some evoke excitement, and others look to induce highly skilled bouts.

Starting at the top, Anderson Silva (17-4) will defend his title for the first time against Travis Lutter (9-3). True to the word of The Ultimate Fighter finale, Lutter is getting a shot at the title that exemplifies exactly what TUF is there for. As a strong wrestler and fantastic grappler, Lutter has been erratic since he was initially heard from by UFC fans. After knocking out Marvin Eastman in 2004 in his big stage debut, Lutter has been on-and-off impressive and looks to ride some of the first momentum he's had in some time. As a reality show, TUF is designed to give talented fighters who have strayed, the chance for a puncher's chance. After winning three straight, including the title shot-clinching armbar of Patrick Cote, Lutter doesn't need a punchers chance. He needs to see how Daiju Takase and Ryo Chonan handed Silva half his career losses: with submissions.

Fortunately for Lutter, Silva has been a world-class striker that can be submitted if found open to one. Seven out of nine of Lutter's wins have come by submission, so it stands to reason that that's his best shot. Short of a one-punch haymaker or a successful, quick combination that lands, Silva won't be out struck. It's a main event that requires Lutter to impose his game and not get caught by Silva's on the way.

If that's the intriguing fight of the night, the next two will provide the excitement. Mirko FiIipovic's (21-4-2) record is laughably superior in strength of opposition than just about anyone else on the UFC roster. All those complaints about a moribund heavyweight division had better get eaten, which was obviously part of the UFC's mindset in bringing in one of the world's top-five heavyweights. For proof that he can knock out a tough looking opponent and convince fans who haven't yet seen him that he is indeed a brutal tactician, he faces Eddie Sanchez (7-0).

For potentially donating his body to impact research, Sanchez will have the chance to give himself something immediately in common with Kevin Randleman, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Mark Hunt and Fedor Emelianenko. If he can somehow continue the seven-fight win streak that has been his career, it would be the biggest catapult for a contender since Joe Lauzon knocked out Jens Pulver. As much as "Li'l Evil" is an all time great though, Filipovic's striking is on a plane above that which Sanchez has faced, or likely will ever face again. The results are so assuredly exciting, but the chances for Sanchez are so slim. That just might be why this bout is compelling in spite of itself.

Just as groundbreaking as the entrance of Mirko "Cro-Cop" into the UFC is that of Quinton Jackson (23-8). The reason of course, is that Jackson holds a win over current UFC poster boy Chuck Liddell. Credit the company for knowing a good storyline when they see one, because the image of Jackson dominating the UFC champion on the mat and finishing him with the help of a solid body attack isn't an easy one to forget. Marvin Eastman (13-6-1) may not have, but he may also be wondering how he did it the last time. After beating a much greener Jackson in both of their pro debuts, Eastman has had a successful, yet professionally erratic career. He doesn't lose to bad fighters, and has beaten his share of them. He played a part in the unraveling of Alex Stiebling, he avenged an earlier loss to Vernon White and most recently he ground out a close decision over Travis Wiuff.

That said a re-energized Jackson, fighting in the U.S. for only the second time since 2001, still has a test in Eastman. Although it's been almost two years since his KO loss to Mauricio Rua, Jackson is still working his way up in competition. Obviously his last win over Matt Lindland constitutes a world-class victory, but it did come against a fighter moving up in weight for the challenge of fighting him. It came down to a split decision in a competitive bout. Beyond that, two wins over Hirotaka Yokoi and Yoon Dong Sik don't do much to suggest that any power bombs are on their way. A win over Eastman however, just might.

The Ultimate Fighter 4 rears its head again with the appearance of Scott Smith (11-2) on the card. Smith takes on an interesting opponent in Patrick Cote (8-4). Coming into his fight with Tito Ortiz, in just the sixth bout of his career, Cote was heavily hyped. He had to be though, or else the fight would be less interesting than it already was. So even though it died down a little bit after the Ortiz loss, it took a bigger hit when Cote dropped two straight to Joe Doerksen and Chris Leben. Those two are just a brief litmus test of how deep the middleweight division goes, and there is a stark distance from their level and that of the Rich Franklin and Anderson Silva's of the world. Cote has a chance though, to put his TUF loss to Lutter behind him and move forward with a win over Scott Smith. Cote has been tough, and his performances against good competition, stands to reason that he can hold his own. The question is what else can he do?

Rounding out the card is a varied array of experience and talent. Sam Hoger (8-2) takes on Lyoto Machida (8-0), who should be expected to fight Rich Franklin soon. It is more than likely that the Brazilian's previous win over the former champ, is the main reason he's been invited to the UFC.

Perennial workhorse Jorge Rivera (21-5) is in against Terry Martin (14-3) in a middleweight bout. Besides an old school debut loss to Stephan Bonnar that some would argue doesn't count on his record because of a murky, undecided amateur/pro distinction, Martin's only other losses have been in the UFC. He's been on a good two-win streak since losing to Jason Lambert last April, but smart money sometimes just goes to experience in favor of Rivera.

Frank Edgar (6-0) is nicknamed "The Answer" but there is no question that he has talent. His wrestling is generally exciting enough to fans and certainly strong enough for opponents. He's ground out two straight decisions and faces his toughest challenge yet in Tyson Griffin (8-0). Griffin already has the big name victim after a stoppage win over Duane Ludwig last June. It's substance time now, and both prospects will be looking to back it up.

Monson to face Aleksander
The snowman should face Aleksander at Bodog

Jeff Monson doesn't want to rest. After being substituted for Matt Lindland in the battle against Fedor Emelianenko at the Bodog April 7 edition, in Russia, the American, nicknamed the Snowman, may be put back on the card, and his opponent should be Fedor's younger brother, Aleksander Emelianenko. Information about the fight was provided by Monson himself to the site UFCmania.com.

It is worth remembering that the American fighter will, on the 4th of March, almost one month before Bodog, fight in the main event of the British Cage Warriors Fighting Championship. Mario Sukata, the Brazilian recently introduced at the UFC, is the most likely opponent.

QUESTIONS STILL SURROUND SHAMROCK VS. GRACIE
by Ivan Trembow and Ken Pishna

Rumors have abound that Strikeforce has filed a lawsuit against Frank Shamrock for breach of contract and that they will attempt to stop Shamrock’s fight against Renzo Gracie from taking place on the first Elite Xtreme Combat (EliteXC) event, which is scheduled to air on the Showtime premium cable network on Feb. 10.

MMAWeekly has been in contact with sources close to both sides of the situation and we’re receiving conflicting reports.

Sources on the Showtime and Pro Elite, Inc. side (Pro Elite is the company that has partnered with Showtime in producing the EliteXC event) are adamant that “the Frank Shamrock vs. Renzo Gracie fight is going to take place on February 10th on Showtime.” Without further explanation, however, it is unclear whether this statement comes from an actual resolution to the conflict or whether it comes from the belief that they will find a way to resolve the conflict prior to Feb. 10.

As for Strikeforce, our sources close to the situation are just as adamant in stating that Strikeforce is in ongoing talks with Showtime and Pro Elite, but that there has been no agreement reached at this time. They also say that Strikeforce is prepared to move forward in the courts if the two sides cannot come to a resolution on their own.

Strikeforce parent company West Coast Production is alleging that Shamrock breached his contract with Strikeforce when he signed with EliteXC parent company Pro Elite, Inc. to fight Gracie on the February 10th Showtime telecast.

According to Strikeforce, Shamrock's contract with them explicitly states that his next fight must be for Strikeforce, which if true, would seem to make Shamrock's contract with Pro Elite a violation of his pre-existing Strikeforce contract.

Shamrock had been scheduled to fight Phil Baroni on a major Strikeforce show in the late spring on nationally distributed pay-per-view, but those plans were thrown into disarray when Shamrock signed to fight on the February EliteXC card. In addition to the possibility that he might lose to Gracie, Shamrock could also be injured even in victory, thus putting the Strikeforce event that was to be built around Shamrock vs. Baroni in jeopardy.

The facts of the litigation are that West Coast Production did indeed file for a preliminary injunction against Frank Juarez (Frank Shamrock’s legal name) on Jan. 23, 2007 and a hearing date to determine whether the injunction would be granted or not was set for Feb. 6, 2007, just four days prior to the scheduled fight.

If the situation has not been resolved prior to the hearing date, Strikeforce's representatives will make their case to a judge that Shamrock should be legally prevented from fighting on the Feb. 10 event, while representatives of the Shamrock-Showtime-EliteXC side will argue that Shamrock should not be legally prevented from fighting.

If the situation progresses to the Feb. 6 hearing, the judge will not be deciding the entire case at that hearing; he or she will only be deciding whether to issue an injunction at that time to bar Shamrock from fighting on the EliteXC card.

If the judge decides not to issue an injunction (thus allowing Shamrock to fight on the EliteXC card as scheduled), Strikeforce's suit against Shamrock would still be active and they could still seek monetary damages in the future.

At the EliteXC introductory press conference in mid-December, Sherdog.com asked Shamrock how he could be fighting Gracie in February when he had just announced that he would be fighting Baroni in Strikeforce. Shamrock's response was, "I have a business relationship that allows that to happen."

Strikeforce did not agree with Shamrock's assessment of the situation, as Strikeforce official Mike Afromowitz told MMAWeekly's Ken Pishna in mid-December, “Frank has a contract with us that very clearly states that his next fight is to be for us. By signing to fight elsewhere before fulfilling that fight, he is not honoring that contract.”

In addition, Strikeforce told MMAWeekly in mid-December that Strikeforce had previously notified an EliteXC representative about Shamrock’s contract with Strikeforce (prior to Shamrock's signing with EliteXC), and added that Strikeforce has "sent correspondence to Gary Shaw and Douglas DeLuca [both members of the EliteXC management team] and Showtime officially notifying them that there is a problem."

During a mid-January press conference to promote the EliteXC card, Shamrock was once again asked by a member of the media about the contractual issues involving Strikeforce. According to EliteXC's transcript of the press conference, Shamrock replied, "It has been straightened out. Strikeforce and I have a really good business relationship and we have been able to see past the points."

Strikeforce apparently disagreed and has filed the lawsuit seeking a preliminary injunction if the situation is not resolved between the two sides.

Even if a judge does issue an injunction that would prevent Frank Shamrock vs. Renzo Gracie from taking place, the EliteXC card would still take place on Feb. 10th, albeit without its scheduled main event.

At the time of publication, officials from both Strikeforce and from Showtime/Pro Elite declined to comment on the situation, although it was indicated that Showtime/Pro Elite will soon be issuing comment on the situation.

Pride: fighters should learn English
Sakakibara says he has not abandoned Japanese market

It is becoming evermore clear that the principal axis of world MMA is moving from Japan to the United States, as you can read about in NOCAUTE #48, on sale now throughout Brazil. So much so that Pride’s directors are putting more and more effort into conquering the American market, as they put on more events in the land of Uncle Sam in 2007. The dedication to the task is such that Pride’s president, Nobuyuki Sakakibara, revealed that he requested that their fighters learn to speak English, so as to bring themselves closer to the fans in the United States.

“The general public in the United States is starting to understand MMA. It is similar to what happened in Japan five, six years ago,” said Sakakibara.

The intense devotion to events to take place in North America has been provoking reactions from the Japanese press, so much that Sakakibara made a point of stating that he is not abandoning his country of origin: “We have no intention of neglecting the Japanese market. We have to get back on network television this year. That is one of our greatest objectives.”

The promoter of Jungle Fight event Wallid Ismail promises a big show for the eight edition of his event that will bring confrontations between athletes from North America and South America . “The South America team will invade the North America . That will rock!”, said the glad Wallid, who doesn’t confirms that the event will be held in . “There are big chances, but I can’t confirm it yet. I also can’t confirm anything about the athletes yet”, said Wallid, who just said that Ronaldo Jacaré will might dispute the category belt of the next edition.

For whom thinks that now the Jungle Fight will just be held in other countries, Wallid send a message: “I am from Amazon and I won’t let my own land ever. There is a sentence that I always like to say: “Never forget that your own people or they will forget you”. So I can guarantee to you that this year I will do at least two editions of Jungle Fight in ”, said Wallid

Diego Sanchez vs. Josh Koscheck at UFC 69 in Houston

Diego Sanchez (17-0) is putting his undefeated record on the line against Josh Koscheck (8-1) April 7 in the first-ever UFC event in Texas. The winner of this bout should cement his status as a top contender for Georges St. Pierre's welterweight title.

Sanchez holds an uncredited win over Koscheck from a semifinal exhibition bout on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter. Judges rendered a split decision after 3 rounds in favor of Sanchez. He went on to defeat Kenny Florian to win the TUF 1 middleweight championship.

If Georges St. Pierre recovers from his knee injury, he will give TUF 4 winner Matt Serra his title shot on this card.

DSE Officially Announces Shogun-Overeem II

PRIDE parent company Dream Stage Entertainment has officially announced a rematch between Mauricio Rua and Alistair Overeem for its Feb. 24 card at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.

The sixth official bout for PRIDE's second North American venture, Rua and Overeem previously met in Aug. 2005 in the semifinals of PRIDE's Middleweight Grand Prix.

Rua weathered the early offense of Overeem, including an escape from Overeem's trademark guillotine choke, before mounting the Dutch fighter and pounding him out from the dominant position midway through the first round.

Later that night, Rua went on to defeat Ricardo Arona in the finals to become PRIDE's 2005 Grand Prix champion, leading also to his being named Sherdog.com's Fighter of the Year along with Takanori Gomi.

Since his shocking injury loss to Mark Coleman, Rua has won three straight bouts, taking out Cyrille Diabate and Kevin Randleman, before earning a dominating decision over Kazuhiro Nakamura this past New Year's Eve.

Meanwhile, Overeem has dropped three of his last four, including bouts to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in July and Ricardo Arona in Sept.

Mach speaks about upcoming Las Vegas PRIDE

Dream Stage Entertainment held a press conference at the Aoyama, Tokyo office on January 23rd to announce four fight cards for the upcoming February 24th event in Las Vegas, Nevada, PRIDE 33 THE SECOND COMING. At the press conference were CEO Nobuyuki Sakakibara and four announced fighters Takanori Gomi, Kazuo Misaki, Kazuhiro Nakamura and Hayato "Mach" Sakurai. These four PRIDE samurais will shock America!

Hayato "Mach" Sakurai appeared at the press conference with a Mohawk-hair style and was all smiles from beginning to end. Sakurai appeared to be in a bright mood, nodding his head as Dream Stage Entertainment CEO Nobuyuki Sakakibara spoke. Exploring his role as the "mood maker" for the Japan team, Sakurai elicited laughs from the gathered reporters.

"Regarding my fight, I don't know anything about my opponent?" Sakurai said but nothing else followed. Asked why he didn't continue speaking, Sakurai explained, "Well, I hadn't thought of anything to say. Then, they told me to speak in English so I'm very confused at the moment. (laughing)"

After pausing for a moment, Mach continued and showed off his fluent (?) English, "If I have to speak in English about this fight, I can say?punch, kick, hiza?wait, hiza is "knee" in English. Oh, I can say "keep on going." That's about it."

"I lost big at the casinos when I went to watch the last Las Vegas PRIDE event. Several years ago I lost to Matt Hughes in the UFC too, so I don't have any good memories in Las Vegas. So, I want to make up for my losses and I'm going to take out my losses on Danzig," Sakurai promised to take out his frustration on his opponent, Mac Danzig, but everyone seemed more interested in Sakurai's casino losses.

Asked by reporters how much he lost at the casinos, Mach made a sour face and said, "It's a secret." Sakakibara, however, more was more than willing to expose Sakurai's secret, "You wouldn't believe how much he lost. Apparently, he lost several tens of thousands of dollars in about five minutes."

Naturally, audible gasps of surprise could be heard from the reporters. Sakurai laughed and said that it's just one more reason he can't afford to lose his upcoming fight, "To make it even worse, that was borrowed money that I have to pay back. I'll be fighting my best so I can repay my loans, too."

Incidentally, Sakurai lost his money playing baccarat and explained that he didn't understand the rules very well. Sakurai's previous experiences in Las Vegas have all apparently been negative and he's going to bring that frustration, and the need to repay his loans, into his fight against Mac Danzig on February 24th!

Sérgio Cunha: At new home
By Eduardo Ferreira

Former athlete of Chute Boxe, Sérgio Cunha was introduced last week as the new Muay Thai trainer of the Brazilian Top Team (BTT). Cunha, who spent one year in training the Judô fighter Hidehiko Yoshida, will replace Paulo Nikolai, who is out of the team now. The fighter from Curitiba is for almost two months in Rio de Janeiro , where he has been working with Rodrigo Minotauro, Rogério Minotouro and Rafael Feijão. Check out now the exclusive interview that Cunha did to site TATAME, where the Muay Thai black belt tell us a little bit of his new home:

What are you expecting of this new team work?

I hope to be able to do a nice job with the whole team. I am still meeting the athletes and I hope that soon I can improve their games, specially the clinch, the knee blows, the Boxing, kicks... People here at BTT have a good technique quality and I want them – who came from BJJ – to be confident at the standed up fight.

You are here in Rio for two months... Have you already worked with some BTT athlete?

I already worked with Rodrigo Minotauro , Rogério Minotouro, Rafael Feijão, Wagão.. I also did some training job with Minotauro before his fight against Josh Barnett at the New Years Pride and I am already training with Minotouro for his next bout at the Pride.

You used to train at Chute Boxe, the big rival of BTT. How the team from Rio de Janeiro did receive you here?

I was really well received here. I got surprised, that was much better than I was expecting. People are getting more professionalism and they are not watching things with the personal size. This change is called as professionalism and this is what I am trying to get for my trainer career.

What are you thinking about the city?

I am here for two months and everything is fine. I don’t know too much things here, so I just can do by myself the way home and the way for the BTT academy. But I know that soon I will know the city and I will be well adapted. My kids are loving to live here and I will put them at a good high school here.

Tell us how was the time when you were promoter and after that when you were Yoshida’s trainer at?

That was a nice time. I was producer and promoter when I was at the presidency of the Shooto Brazil and it really helped me at the fight world. People started to know me... I also did grow up as a person at that time. I started to work at a Japanese company, and the owner is Hideiko Yoshida. So I started to be more important at Shooto and I went to work with Yoshida in , where I spent about one year training with him and his team. That time that I spent there also helped me to open my eyes for some business questions. But I am happy today, I am back working and doing what I like to do, that is teaching Muay Thai.

UFC FIGHT NIGHT 8 DRAWS SOLID RATINGS

The two-hour broadcast of UFC Fight Night 8 on Spike TV drew an overall rating of 1.7 on Thursday, January 25th. The overall rating and the specific demographic ratings were close to the UFC's averages for live fight specials on Spike TV, and they were also up from the ratings that were drawn by the previous UFC Fight Night special on December 13th.

Comparisons to UFN 7 and UFC's Averages-to-Date

Compared to the two-hour broadcast of UFC Fight Night 7 on December 13th, UFC Fight Night 8 was a big success from a ratings standpoint.

UFN 7 drew a 1.3 overall rating, while UFN 8 drew a 1.7 overall rating. UFN 7 drew a 2.0 rating in the key demographic of 18-to-34-year-old males, while UFN 8 drew a 2.3 rating in this demographic. In the broader 18-to-49-year-old male demographic, UFN 7 drew a 1.6 rating and UFN 8 drew a 2.0 rating.

Compared to the UFC's averages for the first twelve live fight specials that it aired on Spike TV (from April 2005 to December 2006), UFC Fight Night 8 was on par in terms of overall viewership and slightly below average in the key demographics.

The UFC's first twelve live fight specials on Spike TV drew an average overall rating of 1.7, which is identical to the overall rating that was drawn by the company's thirteenth live fight special, UFN 8. However, UFN 8's rating of 2.3 in the coveted 18-to-34-year-old male demographic falls short of the prior UFC average of 2.9 in that demographic. Also, UFN 8's rating of 2.0 in the 18-to-49-year-old male demographic falls short of the prior UFC average of 2.3 in that demographic.

The surprise of the night was that the biggest ratings draw was not the main event match-up of Rashad Evans vs. Sean Salmon. The biggest draw of the night was the fight between Heath Herring and Jake O'Brien, which was the first live UFC fight since last October to break the 2.0 barrier in the ratings.

The lowest-rated fight of the evening was the fight that opened the live TV broadcast. This is almost always the case because a large percentage of the people who watch a live UFC special over the course of its two-hour duration are people who were not aware that the event was going to be taking place until after it started. Word of mouth and viewers stumbling upon the broadcast while flipping channels both play a big role in the ratings for every live UFC special, as evidenced by the fact that the ratings always start out low when not as many people are aware that there's a live UFC special airing on Spike TV.

In the opening fight of the broadcast, Hermes Franca defeated Spencer Fisher by TKO, and the fight drew a 1.5 overall rating, which is actually a higher rating than most UFC "opening fights" draw on Spike TV.

The biggest jump of the night for UFN's ratings came for the next fight, Jake O'Brien's unanimous decision victory over Heath Herring. That fight drew a 2.1 overall rating, creating more of an audience increase from the previous fight than the audience growth on the entire UFN 7 broadcast in December. During that broadcast, the largest audience growth was from 1.1 to 1.4.

The viewership level decreased slightly after the O'Brien vs. Herring fight, and it never reached the 2.0 level again. Ed Herman's submission victory over Chris Price drew a 1.8 overall rating, and then the main event fight between Rashad Evans and Sean Salmon was responsible for moderate ratings growth, as it drew a 1.9 overall rating.

While it was somewhat surprising for Evans vs. Salmon to have not drawn the highest rating of the broadcast, the fight still drew a high enough rating to be the second most watched fight on the last three UFC live specials (behind only O'Brien vs. Herring).

Pros vs. Joes Draws Strong Ratings for Season Premiere

The January edition of UFC Fight Night was specifically scheduled to take place on Thursday the 25th in order to serve as a steady lead-in for another show on Spike TV, which has been the case in some form or another for every single live UFC fight special on Spike TV since UFN 4.

In this case, the show being promoted was the second season premiere of Pros vs. Joes, and the show came through by actually out-drawing the UFC Fight Night special that served as its lead-in. It was only the second time that a non-UFC show has out-drawn its live UFC lead-in, with the first show being Blade: The Series last June.

Pros vs. Joes drew an overall rating of 1.9, building on UFN's overall rating of 1.7. Pros vs. Joes also drew a 2.6 rating in the 18-to-49-year-old demographic, building on UFN's 2.0 rating in this demographic. Most impressively of all, Pros vs. Joes drew a 3.3 rating in the 18-to-34-year-old male demographic, building on UFN's rating of 2.3 in this demographic.

Compared to the launch of Blade: The Series following a UFC Fight Night special last June, Pros vs. Joes lost slightly when it comes to the overall rating (1.9 to 2.0), but Pros vs. Joes handily out-drew Blade: The Series' premiere in the 18-to-34-year-old male demographic (3.3 to 2.6) and in the 18-to-49-year-old male demographic (2.6 to 2.2).

Of course, as with any TV series (and any individual season of any TV series), the question is whether or not Pros vs. Joes can maintain ratings that are close to this level over the long haul.

The strong first week ratings won't mean all that much if the ratings fall off drastically in subsequent weeks and the series ends up being cancelled, which is what happened to Blade: The Series. Blade went from drawing a 2.0 overall rating in its first week to averaging a 0.9 overall rating in its remaining weeks, and it experienced similarly drastic drop-offs in the 18-to-34-year-old male demographic (from 2.6 down to 1.0) and in the 18-to-49-year-old demographic (from 2.2 down to 0.9).

Other Spike TV Ratings from January 25th

Airing from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM and leading into the UFC Fight Night special on Spike TV was a new episode of UFC Unleashed, which drew an overall rating of 0.6. The last time that a new episode of UFC Unleashed aired at 7:00 PM, it drew an overall rating of 0.9 back on August 17th (the night of TUF 4's premiere).

After the two-hour broadcast of UFC Fight Night and the one-hour broadcast of Pros vs. Joes, the Spike TV original series Afro Samurai aired from 11:00 PM to 11:30 PM and drew an overall rating of 0.7, which was actually an increase from the series' previous average of 0.5.

Airing from 11:30 PM to 12:00 AM, Wild World of Spike drew an overall rating of 0.5, which was up slightly from its previous average of 0.4. Needless to say, the ratings that have been drawn by Afro Samurai and Wild World of Spike have left a lot to be desired, and the low ratings can't be blamed on the late timeslot because TNA Impact was able to consistently draw ratings of 0.8 or higher in the same timeframe (11:00 PM to 12:00 AM).

The latest episode of Inside the UFC aired on Spike TV from 12:00 AM to 12:30 AM, and it drew an overall rating of 0.4. The ratings for Inside the UFC have decreased ever since Spike TV took away its UFC lead-in.

In the five-week period when Inside the UFC had repeats of UFC Unleashed and one new episode of UFC All Access as its lead-ins, the series was averaging a 0.6 overall rating, which was actually considered a fairly good rating for a show that airs at midnight. In the four weeks since then, with lead-ins of Afro Samurai and Wild World of Spike, the series has drawn overall ratings in the 0.3 to 0.4 range.

Head-to-Head Network Competition

Airing head-to-head with UFC Fight Night 8 on Thursday, January 25th from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM, a repeat of CSI Miami on CBS led the pack with an overall rating of 8.1, while a repeat of the ABC series Ugly Betty drew a 6.9 overall rating. NBC's repeats of My Name is Earl and The Office drew overall ratings of 5.3 and 4.8, respectively, which are fairly strong ratings for repeats of comedy shows. Bringing up the rear was Fox, which managed to draw only a 3.5 overall rating for a repeat of 'Til Death and a 3.2 overall rating for a new episode of The War at Home. Neither series is going to be on the air for very long if they keep drawing ratings in that range. The War at Home's ratings have fallen off drastically ever since Fox moved the series from Sunday nights and put it head-to-head with The Office and Ugly Betty on Thursday nights.

Airing head-to-head with UFC Fight Night in the 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM hour, a new episode of Grey's Anatomy on ABC out-drew a new episode of CSI on CBS, which was shocking when it first happened last fall but is now considered commonplace. Grey's Anatomy drew a 14.0 overall rating, while CSI drew a 13.1 overall rating. In the meantime, NBC's repeats of Scrubs and 30 Rock drew overall ratings of 3.2 and 2.5, respectively. Despite its critical acclaim, 30 Rock is probably not going to get renewed for a second season unless its ratings increase in the coming months. Fox again came in last place with a 2.5 overall rating for a new episode of The OC. That is exactly the kind of number that caused Fox to make the decision to end The OC, which was drawing more than double its current audience just two years ago.

KEVIN RANDLEMAN OUT OF THE HOSPITAL

MMAWeekly.com reported last week that Kevin "The Monster" Randleman was hospitalized, his body basically shutting down and nearing kidney failure. Fortunately, he made it to the hospital in time to avert what surely would have been disaster.

Randleman's wife, Elizabeth, said that his CPK levels reached a measurement of 68,000. A measurement of 150 is considered normal. What this means is that Randleman's muscles were shutting down and if they hadn't got it under control, his organs would start to follow suit.

Much of the problem stemmed from complications following several surgeries and Randleman's refusal to slow down and let his body fully recover before resuming his normal routine resulting in him having to be on I.V. antibiotics for an extended period of time, which is stressful on the body.

The doctor's at St. Rose in Las Vegas, Nev. were able to flush out his system and lower his CPK levels. According to Elizabeth, "Kevin was released from the hospital and is doing very good. His CPK is down to 2,000, which is a long way from 68,000." She continued, "He can’t do anything until it gets to 150 and stays there for a week or so. Other than him being somewhat stir crazy, he is very good."

Randleman spoke to Damon Martin and Jeff Cain on MMAWeekly's SoundOff radio show last week from his hospital room. "I can honestly say, that no matter whatever happens in my life, I have been blessed," said an introspective Randleman.

He even touched on the issue of his failed drug test following the Shogun fight on Pride's U.S. debut last October in Las Vegas. "If you're going to be a man, you have to stand up for what is right. I made a very bad mistake. I did something wrong. I want everyone to understand that I am so sorry to my fans, to MMA... I am going to accept everything that I get," said Randleman.

Randleman said, "I don't take performance enhancing drugs" and went on to explain that, following 11 surgeries in 16 months, he was on so many antibiotics and pain pills that he was afraid he may not be allowed to fight. But he reiterated, "From the bottom of my heart, I am so sorry for the deception. It is not my right to fight; it is an honor for me to fight."

LINDLAND, EVANS & NOONS ON SOUNDOFF

Tonight’s radio show on MMAWeeklyRadio.com is stacked from top to bottom. Due to some technical difficulties last night, we couldn’t get Rashad Evans on as planned, so we’re kicking off the show with him tonight to talk about his brutal KO of Sean Salmon.

We’ve also got the #1 ranked middleweight fighter in the world, Matt Lindland, coming on to talk about this weekend’s IFL fight with Carlos Newton and his new 3-fight deal to fight for BodogFights. Lindland’s deal with Bodog calls for him to fight all 3 fights at heavyweight, the first of which is scheduled to be Fedor Emelianenko, the #1 ranked heavyweight fighter in the world.

KJ Noons is an up-and-coming fighter that will be facing Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett on the EliteXC card for Showtime next week. He is a unique fighter that is projected to be world-class in MMA and professional boxing and has signed to do both on Showtime.

K-1 Elite to Yokohama; New Weight Class Announced

TOKYO, January 25 - K-1 announced today it will launch its World Grand Prix 2007 season with an All-Star event in Yokohama. The fightsport organization also outlined plans to create a new weight class, as well as a program to kickstart the development of young Japanese fighters.

Joining K-1 Event Producer Sadaharu Tanikawa in the Imperial Hotel press conference were a couple of K-1's Japanese stars -- Musashi and Yusuke Fujimoto. These fighters will face one another at this year's first World GP event, set for Yokohama Arena on March 4. Headlining the talent-rich card is a bout between defending WGP Champ Sammy Schilt and Ray Sefo of New Zealand. In other action, Korean giant Hong-Man Choi will step in against American Mighty Mo; Ruslan Karaev of Russia will tango with Dutchman Badr Hari; Chalid "Die Faust" of Germany will take on Japanese tough guy Hiromi Amada; and French kickboxer Cyril Abidi will test Japanese fighter Mitsugu Noda.

Tanikawa also outlined a new K-1 weight classification scheme. "In 1993, when K-1 started, the final eight fighters in the championship tournament were all about 90 kg each," he said. "But in recent years, bigger and bigger fighters have emerged who have good skills. And so, in order to make the sport more competitive and exciting, we will be experimenting this year with a 100 kg (220lbs) weight classification."

The new over/under 100kg weight division will be applied in K-1 Superfights. Overall, the World Grand Prix will continue as an open weight class format.

Also unveiled today was a reality television concept aimed at discovering and developing fighters in this country. The program will take the form of an ongoing competition between two teams -- one coached by Ernesto Hoost, the second by Mike Bernardo. Tanikawa said he hoped young Japanese fighters would flourish under the tutelage of these K-1 veterans. Viewers will follow their progress on the weekly Fuji TV fightsport program "SRS" (Special Ringside).

Cung Le in MMA movie “Never Submit”

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.--— Jan 31, 2007Imperia Entertainment, Inc. (Pink Sheets:IPEI) President President James Hergott announced today that the he has cast undefeated MMA fighter and three time world Kickboxing Champion Cung Le in the role of villain, “Ricardo” in the world’s first MMA feature film, “Never Submit.” “We are pleased to have a star of Cung’s caliber on the team. Cung has won all of his MMA fights by KO or TKO in the first round and is an exciting fighter and talented actor.” said Hergott. “I am very excited to be on board,” said Cung Le.

ABOUT CUNG LE

In 1975, three days before the fall of Saigon, Cung Le and his mother Anne escaped Vietnam by helicopter under heavy gun fire. They spent several difficult months in a refuge camp in the Philippines until the time they where reunited with some of their family members. Luckily, they had a sponsor in America and were able to start their new lives in San Jose, California. Growing up as a skinny Vietnamese refuge, Cung Le was an easy target for bullies to pick on, often used for practical jokes, pushed around and even beat up. Most of these bullies never even knew his name and often referred to Cung Le as a nip, chink, or gook.

Today the name Cung Le is one of the most famous names in the Martial Arts Fight World as "... pound for pound one of the most exciting fighters of all times (Dave Carter, Inside Kung Fu)." Cung Le is not only a three-time world champion who is in his prime, he is also a dedicated father and role model to millions. Cung Le has made a tremendous impact on martial arts and continues to expand his arsenal of tools with the addition of Jujitsu training. His popularity as a fighter has brought San Shou Kung Fu to the forefront of the fight world and is catapulting Le into the main stream.

Most recently, Le was featured on a television series called JOURNEY OF A CHAMPION. His beginning, his challenges, his victories, and the road ahead are featured in three unforgettable episodes. He is also the subject of a documentary that chronicles his life "Cung Le, The Making of a Champion", beginning with Le as a child in Vietnam, following him as a wrestler in college and taking the audience ringside for his many hard fought victories. The film also takes you behind the scenes to see the type of grueling training that makes a champion. Le was also the featured guest for The Discovery Channel documentary titled, "On the Inside: Martial Arts."

?Le has made appearances on the covers of several of the most renowned martial arts publications in the world, including Black Belt Magazine, Inside Kung Fu, Wushu Kung Fu, Martial Arts Illustrated, ESPN the magazine and the cover of DirecTV. A testament to his high status in Asia, an article on Le was also published in the Japanese version of Black Belt Magazine, the Bible of Martial Arts. Le has also captivated his television audience with outstanding victories on ESPN2 StrikeForce, Pay-Per-View’s K-1 Superfights, DRAKA Championships and Shidokan, The Triathlon of Martial Arts. ??At the prestigious 2004 Asia Entertainment awards, Le was honored as the most famous Vietnamese Martial Artist in the world. He received this award in Los Angeles amid a first class Oscars-like ceremony. With this honor Le is now in possession of over 35 major awards.
