UFC DOCTOR VERIFIES PENN'S RIB INJURY
by Matt Hill

UFC doctors have verified the rib injury that Penn believed he sustained during the second round of his fight with Matt Hughes, according to BJPenn.com. The injury has been found to be a fracture of Penn’s costochondral junction.

According to the findings of physician Sameer Nagda, MD, “There is evidence of a fracture of the right tenth costochondral junction with evidence of surrounding soft tissue edema and fluid consistent with moderate grade muscle strains of the intercostals and oblique musculature in the region of fracture.”

According to MedHelp.org, the costochondral junction is, “The point where the ribs articulate with the sternum.” What this essentially means is that during his fight with Hughes, Penn sustained a fracture of the connective tissue between his ribs and the sternum. This injury is considered to be a rib fracture.

Penn’s web site says, “While in Las Vegas for UFC 64, BJ met with the UFC’s orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine doctor in Las Vegas for a physical exam and diagnostic MRI study of his ribs and oblique muscles on his right side. The report verified and substantiated exactly what happened to BJ at the end of the second round when he thrusted up and around to gain Matt’s back. During this upward and twisting movement, BJ pulled/tore internal muscles located inside and around the bottom right rib and fractured the rib. As explained, this type of trauma can and will cause a constriction of his right lung, leading to a substantially diminished breathing capacity.”

This new report verifies what has thus far been a disputed claim of injury by BJ Penn in the weeks following his UFC 64 loss to Matt Hughes.

TUF Season 4: Serra Squares Off with Carter
By Sean McClure

There was a lot of hype and build up for the fight this week, mainly because of the fact that it was a rematch and a chance for Matt Serra to avenge a KO loss to Shonie Carter. The UFC has been high on rematches lately and generally speaking fans want to see someone get their revenge a la Chuck Liddell vs. Randy Couture, Jeremy Horn, and hopefully Quentin Jackson if Dana can make that happen. That being said, it's on to the second welterweight fight to decide who makes it in to the finals.

The show this week was pretty dramatic from the start. What was odd was that they hit the weigh-ins right off of the bat. Matt Hughes has some kind words about Shonie being a tough fighter and said that winning a decision against him would be very difficult. I don't believe that Matt Hughes would have any trouble beating Shonie and I doubt it would be by decision.

A lot of focus was placed on Marc Laimon's "poor" work ethic and his apparent lack of interest in helping Team Mojo. Serra ribs him a little bit, but it is obvious that Laimon is not amused and tells them that they have everything under control in the cage before walking away. Matt makes it clear in his confessional that he believes Laimon does not need to be here. A little later on, Matt Hughes starts talking about Serra and Laimon individually before making his point that he would like to see them grapple a little bit.
Matt Serra starts to give Laimon a hard time again about not working very much and Laimon just shrugs it off. It isn't until Marc begins bashing Royce Gracie again that Serra comes a bit unglued.

Matt Serra confronts Marc Laimon about what he feels is disrespect towards Royce Gracie, especially since Laimon is not a fighter himself. Marc fires back that Royce is himself disrespectful in his pre-fight comments to which Hughes visibly disagrees with a look of confusion on his face. Laimon fires back with some strong words and Serra again confronts him about being a "keyboard warrior" and not actually fighting, but rather he just criticizes from the sidelines. Din Thomas appreciates Matt's saying these things to Laimon's face just like he said them in the van rides home from the gym.

Back at the house, Shonie is painting again and this time it's his bed with blue spray paint. The guys don't seem as shocked by the antics, however they are annoyed about the paint fumes lingering inside the rooms. Jorge Rivera is once again the most agitated at Carter and decides to invent a distraction to release some tension. Enter "Phony" Carter. Phony is Jorge wearing a clown nose, a clown wig, a thong, and some clown shoes. They have a mock fight with "Mikey Serra", which is Mikey Burnett wearing a white gi. In the fight, Carter knocks out the fake Serra with a spinning backfist and everyone has a good laugh about it as "Phony" does the Shonie dance to celebrate his victory.

Carter picks Rich Clementi to corner him from Team No Love and Rich accepts.
Shonie makes it clear that he believes he has the advantages in the fight including the mental game. He states that he feels that he does have the psychological advantage because he knocked Matt out in their first fight. I would have to agree that Matt will be looking for the backfist very avidly in the Octagon and that gives Carter a slight advantage. Don't get me wrong I expect Serra to win. I was just saying....

Georges St. Pierre really helps Serra get ready for his fight this week. I found this interesting because if GSP beats Hughes at UFC 65, he will be facing Serra down the line. GSP would definitely know Serra's strengths and weaknesses more so than Matt Hughes would since he has spent more time with the fighters individually.

The night before the fight, Carter and Matt share a light hearted moment and reminisce about their fight six years ago.

The day of the fight and Big John is in Serra's locker room jokingly asking him how he will know to stop the fight. Serra confidently says he will tap Shonie out. There was a lot of build up for this fight, a lot by the UFC hype department. It was right here that I was hoping it delivered for the ratings sake. It should be a war and Carter's reach advantage and height made me nervous for Matt. Shonie is a great fighter no doubt and those two things help his odds tremendously in this fight.

Round 1 - Matt gets a takedown and gets Shonie's back as he would so many times in this fight. He starts dropping heavy punches from that position and I thought he might finish it right here. Shonie weathers the storm and gets up before getting a takedown of his own. Serra manages another takedown shortly after and then gets the mounted position before Carter gets up and scares Serra fans everywhere by landing the spinning backfist AGAIN. It rocks Serra a little bit and Shonie tries to capitalize and he scores a takedown for his efforts.

Round 1 scored for Carter

Round 2 - They both scramble for position and takedowns. Serra locks up in the clinch with Shonie and muscles a takedown where he starts some ground and pound. Matt Serra gets Carter's back and Shonie escapes. The highlight of the round came at the end when Matt Serra lands a jump sidekick right to Shonie's midsection. I didn't see that coming from Serra, I can tell you that.

Round 2 scored for Serra

Round 3 - We are here because they are tied one round a piece. A humorous moment for me happened when Big John actually had to physically pull Shonie's trunks up because they were falling down. They scramble for position again and Serra gets another takedown. More ground and pound for Serra who gets the mounted position again and then takes Carter's back. Shonie is up and Matt gets another takedown, but Shonie ends up on top, but only briefly as Matt gets back to his feet.

Round 3 scored for the winner by unanimous decision and moving on to the finals to face Chris Lytle: Matt Serra

This fight should hopefully help the all time low ratings that this season is seeing. It was a great fight compared to the other offerings of TUF4 and Matt Serra is the most popular fighter on the show. Let's hope it does so we can continue to see free UFC programming every week.

ESPN RE-AFFIRMS UFC COMMERCIAL BAN
by Ivan Trembow

The Disney-owned ESPN has re-affirmed its ban on all UFC-related advertisements from appearing on any Disney-owned network, which includes the ABC and ESPN family of networks.

The UFC commercials that had been appearing frequently on ESPN and ESPNews were already a violation Disney's company policy, which expressly prohibits "advertisements or promotions of any sports program" that does not air on a Disney-owned television network.

This is not limited to the UFC. It would also be against the Disney/ESPN corporate policy for a Disney-owned network to advertise a sports program that airs on USA Network, or a sports program that airs on Fox Sports Net, or a sports program that airs on any other non-Disney-owned network.

Despite this policy being in place, the UFC was previously able to place its commercials on Disney-owned networks such as ESPN and ESPNews by purchasing the commercials via local advertising affiliates throughout the country.

As a result of this, Disney/ESPN sent a memo, which has been obtained by MMAWeekly, to all of its local advertising affiliates.

After being reminded by Disney/ESPN that the UFC commercials are "a direct violation of our Affiliate agreements," the memo goes on to state, "Please contact your programming colleagues for complete advertising restrictions. ESPN is not accepting these ads on a national level, and the same restrictions apply for our local Affiliates. Thank you for your cooperation and immediate attention to this matter."

With ESPN or any other television network, there's the programming on the network (the actual shows), and then there's the advertising. This news does not affect programming in any way. ESPN hasn't devoted many news segments to the UFC in the past, but there is nothing that would prevent them from doing so in the future. The same goes for UFC fighters appearing on Quite Frankly with Stephen A. Smith, Cold Pizza, or any other actual show.

Advertising, on the other hand, is a completely separate matter. The Disney/ESPN corporate policy is, and has been, that you can't buy ads to promote sports shows that air on any non-Disney-owned network.

This is not a new policy, but some local ESPN advertising affiliates were selling UFC commercials anyway. The memo from Disney/ESPN makes it clear that they are going to start enforcing the policy more strictly, so local advertising affiliates will no longer be able to violate the policy by selling UFC commercials.

After wins GP, Gesias challenges

After winning four fighters and becomes the champion of the GP until 70kg of K-1 Hero's, Gesias Cavalcanti wants to do your career with a new challenge. The American Top Team black belt challenged the Japanese Masto, K-1 Max champion, to fight under K-1 rules. "I challenged Masato for the New Years Eve event, the Dynamite! I love challenges, so I did challenge him, even knowing that I have not so many chances to win.

But the experience of fighting at K-1 MAX will be really important to my career", explained Gesias, who also told about his fight against Rani Yahya in the semifinal and Caol Uno in the final of the GP. - I though that I could submit Rani. Especially when I dominated his neck. I have been training this position a lot. Uno is experienced and does tactic fights, so I did need to fight like that - said Gesias

Injury Updates!!

This is for all you people who was talking about my injuries and not knowing a damn thing you're talking about. Some say I was scared, some say I always pull out of fights...the list may go on and on. To be honest I could give a rat's ass what people are saying.

This is what's going on with me right now; I have bruised ribs and am bleeding from the stomach which I may need a surgery. I also found out that I have a bad heart which I started taking medication for. And to top it off I will need to have eye surgery this month because something is growing in my eyes may cause me to go blind.

I have asked my doctor to write me a letter so I can support this statement. Right now this is a real rough time for me and I’m very blessed to have a great family who didn’t doubt me but stood behind me 100% and people who knew what I was dealing with before I re-injuried my ribs. I would like to thank Ronald Jhun & Chris Onzuka for the inspiring words and for being there when I needed a friend to talk to while deciding to pull out of X-1.

I guess the thing that bothers me the most is that I have never pulled out from a fight and always said yes even with less then 24 hours notice. People who followed me know this. A good friend recently told me that I would find out who my true friends are now, which I did, and I also found out the fake ones.

I love this sport and have been a fan for countless years. I have helped every promotion in Hawaii till this day but after this experience I will help no more. I will concentrate on P.I.P and my family and nothing more!!

GOD BLESS

UFC 64 Fallout: Middleweight Madness
By Sean McClure

It was an active weekend for the UFC and its championships. A new lightweight champion was crowned and a new middleweight champion emerged leaving everyone stunned. What does this mean for the UFC and what will Dana White do now that he has a new 185 pound champion? I will try to answer the best I can, but some may not like what they hear.

When I watched Rich Franklin walking to the Octagon on Saturday he looked hollow and “thin”. I don’t mean thin physically in the literal sense, just overall he looked like someone walked over his grave. It was as if the seven months away from the Octagon were allowing this moment to overwhelm him. He eyed Silva all the way to the cage and I, among others, could already see he was going to lose. I don’t know why, but it was obvious. Something about his stare or the way he was walking. I can’t put my finger on it. Rich climbed in the cage and did not look himself, not at all. He pawed at Silva and then did what I, to this very second, still have no idea what he was thinking. He tried to overpower and outmaneuver Silva, a much better muay thai fighter in the clinch position. Rich paid for his tactical mistake dearly and received a broken nose and TKO loss on his record for his troubles. Rich lost fair and square, but it was painful to watch for those who came to like his easy going demeanor and friendly mannerisms.

Immediately the MMA forums that I frequent started turning on the former champion they once touted as the greatest in the world claiming he was overrated. Some “geniuses” started the eternally intriguing, but irrelevant Pride vs. UFC message thread number 1,322,456,745 claiming Silva beating Rich proved that Pride was better than the UFC. News flash! Anderson Silva is a UFC fighter! Is Silva the better striker? Yes, emphatically. Is Rich the better overall fighter? Yes, but not by much.

Anderson Silva is the scariest striker that the UFC middleweight division has ever seen in my opinion. Rich has had his share of one sided victories, but Anderson Silva in just two fights has put away two of the UFC middleweight division’s top 5 fighters in less than five minutes total. He has announced his arrival and I am sure that he plans on staying. To be honest, right now I don’t see anyone of the middleweights currently in the UFC defeating Silva anytime soon. What can Dana do to provide a real threat to Silva’s title? Should he wait for Franklin to recover, win a few more fights, and climb back up the ladder? That would take too long. I think he has a better idea and I think it would be a good move for the UFC.

Dana could bring Jeremy Horn in, but Horn isn’t the same fighter he used to be and has been defeated by Silva already by unanimous decision in June of 2004. White could pursue and retrieve the once popular, Ivan Salaverry if they really wanted to. In my opinion, Salaverry would be brutally KO’d somewhere around 60-70 seconds, but it would be worth watching for the highlights. Zuffa will hopefully do what is right and bring back a man that they promised a shot at the title on two occasions. The man they released from contract over wearing advertising on a t-shirt that to which, no one was even paying attention. Rumors are flying that Dana White is desperately recruiting the same fighter he fired not so long ago. Matt Lindland may be the only fighter besides Franklin with the right tools to beat Anderson Silva.

Lindland is a beast at 185. He manhandles people in the middleweight division with relentless aggression. Matt did really well against Quentin “Rampage” Jackson at 205 in the WFA and some thought he should have been awarded the decision for his efforts. I think that fight alone made a statement to doubters that he is for real. It is in my opinion that Anderson Silva would not have an answer for Lindland’s tenacity, strength, and grappling skills. Sure, Silva is a black belt, but belts mean nothing in the Octagon. Matt’s overall game is far deeper than the new middleweight champion’s own substantial offerings. He has more tools at his disposal and they are the right ones for the job. That isn’t to say that Silva would lose for certain. I am just saying that Lindland would be the best choice and biggest threat in the United States to Silva’sreign. Notice, Dan Henderson and Paulo Filho fans, that I said the United States. No hate mail please.

I am still in shock at the way Franklin was defeated and the way he looked in general during his short and very uncharacteristic fight. I am not in shock at how aggressive and impressive Anderson looked because he is one of the best in the world. Where does the division go from here with the new champion? I think, up. The ball is in your court, Dana. Don’t drop it.

IVAN MENJIVAR BECOMES IFL'S NEWEST DRAGON
by Mick Hammond

On Thursday, November 2nd when the IFL returns to Portland, Oregon for the semi-finals of this year’s World Team Tournament, Carlos Newton’s Toronto Dragons will lock horns with the defending Team Champion Quad City Silverbacks coached by Pat Miletich.

Originally it appeared as if the Dragons may be overmatched by the Silverbacks, but things just got more interesting thanks to the IFL’s newest acquisition, Canadian/El Salvadorian sensation Ivan Menjivar.

As Menjivar told MMAWeekly this past weekend, he became a member of the Dragons at the invitation of the team’s legendary coach himself.

“When I was in Japan [for K-1] I caught up with Carlos Newton,” explained Ivan. “I know him from when I started fighting and I saw him all the time. So he needed one replacement for his team, a 155lb guy, he told me, ‘You are what we need on the team to continue fighting [through the tournament].’”

“So I asked him to tell me about this organization [IFL] and he started to tell me the advantages of it. It’s something new, new rules, fighting on a team and that it’s going to be getting bigger in the United States and I really like to try something new for the sport – that’s how it becomes more popular – so I said, ‘Yes,’” continued Menjivar.

Another one of the advantages of the IFL that Ivan was quick to point out is the pay structure that allows fighters to receive a monthly stipend in addition to their fight purse.

“He [Newton] told me we could fight almost every other month and they are going to pay us money every month between the fights,” said Menjivar. “So that’s very interesting for a young guy like me who trains to make fighting a career. I’m really open to the idea so I want to try it.”

When it comes to Ivan’s IFL debut in November, he’ll be matched up with one of the best fighters the IFL has to offer, Bart Palaszewski, a fighter that Menjivar isn’t completely unfamiliar with.

“I met Bart last night at a show, he’s a nice guy and he looks big [laughs],” exclaimed Ivan. “So for me I have to gain weight, train well…fight for me, fight for the team, don’t get hurt and continue fighting.”

People familiar with Menjivar knows he normally fights at 145lbs, but with no such weight class in the IFL team format, he has to step up to 155lbs and that in itself presents its own challenges, challenges that Ivan feels he can prepare for.

“Yes you can feel the [additional] weight, there’s a difference, and you can feel it a lot,” admitted Menjivar. “If I train well I should be okay. That’s fortunate for me that I can train well for this fight.”

That training will be handled at one of the premier schools in Canada, Tristar Gym, home to some of the most talented fighters in the country.

“We have fun here, we train a lot, but we have fire, we’re serious too, we don’t play around all the time,” commented Ivan of the atmosphere at Tristar. “So for [Georges] St. Pierre, David [Loiseau], me, the Vigneault brothers [Stephane and Steve], we have a great relationship here, so it’s great training for us here.”

So now just a couple weeks out from his IFL debut, Ivan knows there’s a lot of expectation on him to do well for not only himself but the Dragons…and as a fighter who enjoys challenges, he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I’ll try to make a good show first and win so we can get to the finals,” concluded Menjivar. “You fight for you but you also fight for your team so you can keep fighting and make more money…so there is pressure that is different, it’s new, but I like that.”

All is not good in UFC land
By Zach Arnold

With people reflecting upon the success of UFC’s 3.1 rating for Ken vs. Tito III, the obvious question asked by everyone was whether or not that rating meant that UFC would be able to create new fans that would watch their other programming. The first test was Thursday’s Ultimate Fighter show, which had been lagging in the ratings this year.

On Friday, the ratings news came out for Thursday’s edition of TUF. It was bad. Real bad. They nearly lost to TNA. Repeat after me… they nearly lost to TNA wrestling.

Cordeiro confident about Shogun

The technician director of Chute Boxe team, Rafael Cordeiro is confident about Maurício Shogun's performance against the American Kevin Randleman at Pride Real Deal, that will take place on October 21st, in Las Vegas, United States. "We trained a lot with Shogun and he is prepared on the ground and also standed up. He trained a lot the ground game with Cristiano Marcello and with Nino Schembri and it will be great fight", guaranteed Rafael, who did say that knows the game of Randdleman.

- We know Randleman's game. He already fought Ninja and he was losing, but he is really tough so he did that right punch under him. The attention of this fight must be during all the movements. I need to have a special attention about everything and Shogun must do his own game. Shogun weights 100kg naturally and trains a lot here in the academy with the heavy ones - finished Rafael Cordeiro. Traveling on Monday, the Chute Boxe team formed by Rafael Cordeiro, Rudimar, Wanderlei Silva and Murilo Ninja, will follow Shogun at Pride USA.

Calvan & Akiyama Capture Hero's Championships

YOKOHAMA, October 9, 2006 -- J.Z. Calvan of Brazil and Yoshihiro Akiyama of Japan emerged victorious tonight in the Hero's Middleweight and Light Heavyweight World Championship Tournaments event at the Yokohama Arena.

Hero's is FEG's popular mixed martial arts production. Due the tremendous energy and endurance demands these bouts place on fighters, the quarterfinals were held this August at Ariake. Today's event featured the semifinal and final bouts for both the Hero's Middleweight (70kg/154lb) and Light Heavyweight (85kg/187lb) classes, along with a trio of Superfights.

Twenty-three year-old mixed martial arts fighter J.Z. Calvan won the Middleweight crown with a majority decision win over Caol Uno of Japan.

Calvan had worked a front sleeper to score a fast first-round submission over compatriot Rani Yahya in his semifinal bout; while Uno had taken a unanimous decision against Canadian Ivan Menjivar in his semi, a contest in which the pair stayed on their feet, passing frequently with punches and kicks.

The final began with Calvan planted center ring and Uno circling, both men jabbing and tossing in low kicks. Calvan got the advantage midway through, hitting Uno with three unanswered punches to put him on the mat. Uno twisted his way out of trouble and soon the two were back on their feet. But again it was Calvan's power that prevailed as the Brazilian's fists earned him another takedown and he came in for a second mount. Uno pumped his legs to keep his opponent at bay until the bell sounded to end the round.

Calvan achieved a side mount midway through the second, but Uno once again twisted free and found his feet. A double leg takedown by Calvan brought the Brazilian a chance to inflict, but Uno was good in guard. Again the Japanese fighter got up, before the relentless Calvan smashed him to the canvas one final time, and there the pair twisted away until the final bell. One judge saw a draw, the others marked the win for Calvan, who was all smiles as he draped himself in the Brazilian flag to celebrate his victory.

In the Middleweight reserve fight, Kazuyuki Miyata of Japan got an early takedown and put the punches in to bloody Australian jiu-jitsu fighter Ian Schaffa's right eye. The ringside doctor had a look and stopped the contest, giving Miyata the win.

The Middleweight bouts were conducted under Hero's Rules with a 5Min x 2R w/ 1R Ext format.

In the Light Heavyweight Tournament (conducted under Hero's Rules with a 1R x 10Min, 2R x 5Min, w/1 ExtR x 5Min format), Judo Olympian Yoshihiro Akiyama took the belt with a thrilling win over Dutch Kickboxer Melvin Manhoef.

In his semifinal bout, Akiyama showed both power and precision in planting a high kick on wrestling great Kestutis Smirnovas of Lithuania. Akiyama followed up with a right straight punch then unloaded a barrage of blows on his downed opponent to prompt a referee stop for the TKO victory. Manhoef, meanwhile, was similarly quick in his semi, exploiting a failed takedown attempt by Japanese Judo stylist Shungo Oyama to put in a flurry of kicks and punches and a decisive right hook to earn a date with Akiyama.

The final was fast and furious. Manhoef was the more aggressive combatant at the start, attempting to overpower his opponent with punches. Akiyama got tagged good a couple of times and looked in trouble as he retreated from the blows. But then Manhoef got sloppy with his takedowns. He crashed Akiyama to the canvas but when the two came to rest it was the Japanese fighter who was in superior position. Manhoef squirmed out of danger and the two went to their feet, whereupon Manhoef employed an awkward body slam to get a second takedown, again coming out at a disadvantage on the mat. Now Akiyama was able to wrap his legs round the Dutch fighter's body, coolly extract an arm, and hyperextend for a submission.

"Judo is the best" hollered a teary Akiyama from the winner's circle after the bout.

The Light Heavyweight reserve fight lasted a mere 22 seconds, as Canadian Carlos Newton pumped in a pair of jaw-rattling right uppercuts to floor Tokimitsu Ishizawa of Japan and take the TKO win.

There were three Superfights on the card, fought under Hero's Rules in a 5Min x 2R w/1R Ext format.

The Main Event Superfight featured Don Frye of the United States and former Judo Min Soo Kim from South Korea. The 40 year-old Frye is a veritable mixed martial arts legend; while Kim, who won a silver medal in Judo at the Atlanta Olympics, has a fair bit of experience himself, having taken on top K-1 fighters Bob Sapp, Ray Sefo and Semmy Schilt in Hero's action.

The pair stayed standing through the early going, exchanging low kicks and some solid punches -- Frye kicking at Kim's bandaged right knee, Kim's fists opening a cut over Frye's right eye. The pair went to the mat late in the round and Kim got a mount, but the Korean didn't have the stamina to put a properly punishing pounding on his opponent. The fighters tangled up more in the second, clinching against the ropes. But then, suddenly, just as Kim threw a left, Frye came across with a potent right hook, smacking his opponent's pinna and dropping him in a heap for the KO triumph.

In other Superfights, Brazilian Antonio Silva got a first-round left hook in to drop Georgy Kaysinov of Russia then laid in with the punches to earn a referee stop and KO win; while in a spirited bout between a couple of Japanese fighters, Hideo Tokoro withstood an aggressive early challenge before deftly working an armbar to submit Ken Kaneko.

The Hero's Middleweight and Light Heavyweight World Championship Tournaments event attracted a crowd of 10,631 to the Yokohama Arena. It was broadcast live in Japan on the TBS network and in South Korea on OnMedia. For delay-broadcast information in other areas contact your local providers. Marcus Aurélio talks about Gomi

Getting prepared for the belt dispute of the light athletes against the Japanese Takanori Gomi at Pride Bushido 13, that will be held on November 5th in Japan, the Brazilian Marcus Aurélio (ATT0 guarantees that will use the same tactic of his last fight, when he submitted Gomi by kata-gatame. "The tactic will be the same one. Be 100% prepared and look after do my own game", said Marcus, who believes that the Japanese will be cleaver in this second confrontation.

- I am sure he will be cleverer now, but I don't believe he will change his game, even because we know his game. He will try to avoid the ground game and do the exchange game. I am sure that he won't do the ground game with me. He has no confidence and no technique to do that. He will probably give some pressure and he will search the KO - said Aurélio.

Shaken, not Stirred

As the locals know, but the mainlanders may not, Hawaii was shaken up by an earthquake. Now before all you Californians say that we are pussies, we don't have earthquakes here...well not until yesterday. For us on Oahu, it was just a pretty good shaking like a strong vibration (I'm sure most of our readers will understand that description), but the Big Island of Hawaii took the most force of it since it was closet to the earthquake's epicenter.

We had our power out of commission until about 5 pm and most shopping centers along with mostly everything else was closed because of the power outage.

UFC 64: Full Results (Another re-cap)

Spencer Fisher vs. Dan Lauzon

The first thirty seconds of this fight was nothing but static for me as I am sure it was for everyone else. I think the UFC was having major camera problems and they just went out at the beginning of the fight. Dan Lauzon took down Fisher and used good ground and pound for the bets part of the first round. Fisher landed a nice up kick that rocked Lauzon early on. Every time the fight was stood up Fisher made the most of it and was finally able to take advantage of it and put Lauzon away with a flurry that started with a big flying knee.

Winner: Spencer Fisher by TKO at 4:38 of round 1

Cheick Kongo vs. Carmelo Marrero

1st round - Cheick lands some leg kicks, but this round stayed on the ground as Marrero took him down again and again. Carmelo landed knees to the body, elbows, and then punches to Kongo who was pushed up against the fence.

2nd round - Starts off the same way, with Kongo leg kicks and then a Marrero takedown. Pretty much the same as round one in that Marrero dominated the fight here and kept it on the ground.

3rd round - Marrero takes down Cheick after some work up against the fence by Kongo. They are stood up as they had been several times before in this fight. Marrero took Kongo down at will and at the end of this round, I had Carmelo winning all three rounds. The judges did not agree with me.

Winner: Carmelo Marrero by split decision

Jon Fitch vs. Kuniyoshi Hironaka

1st round - They come out striking and then clinch against the fence before Fitch gets a big takedown and then starts some ground and pound. Hironaka locks in a decent triangle, but can't put Fitch away in the minute and a half he was attempting it. Fitch gets out and ground and pounds his way to the end of the round.

2nd round - Fitch comes out firing away and gets another big takedown, then starts more ground and pound. There were some good sweeps in the second round and a big head kick that landed by Fitch.

3rd round - Fitch comes out kicking and lands some good shots that are met with some stiff jabs from Hironaka. Fitch gets a takedown and gets cut badly from a punch on the way in. Ground and pound by Fitch who lands some hard shots and elbows. They are stood up and Fitch takes it back to the ground with some nice elbows again until the round ends.

Winner: Jon Fitch by Unanimous decision

Sean Sherk vs. Kenny Florian

This one was a war.

1st round - Sherk gets the takedown, but Florian reverses only for Sean to get back on top in 1/2 guard. Sherk starts his trademark ground and pound.
Florian attempts a guillotine that Sean manages to get out of. Sherk finishes the round with ground and pound.

2nd round - Florian lands a nice body kick and lets his legs fly. Sherk scores the takedown and then gets cut badly by a nice elbow from Kenny. They check the cut and then the doctor cleans blood out of KenFlo's eyes. Sherk starts hammering with the ground and pound again, but Kenny is defending nicely.

3rd round - Kenny kicks to start things off and lands, but just like before Sherk takes down Florian and ground and pounds. Kenny continually tries to get up, but Sherk is overpowering him. They are stood up again and Kenny lands another good kick. They exchange on their feet as the round ends.

4th round - Kenny kicking yet again and avoids the takedown attempt, but gets taken down shortly after that. Kenny tries to get up, but can't and gets hammered a little by Sean's ground and pound. They are stood up and the legs of Florian fly which excites the crowd.

5th round - Same as before with the kicks and takedown. Ground and pound by Sean and Kenny almost secures an arm bar. More ground and pound, but the action stales so the fight is stood up. Florian kicks and after he gets taken down sinks in a decent guillotine, but Sean escapes. Sherk gets the full mount, but Kenny reverses only to meet more Ground and pound from Sean.

Winner and new lightweight champion: Sean Sherk by unanimous decision

Rich Franklin vs. Anderson Silva

1st round - They feel each other out for about a minute. Anderson is taller and has the reach advantage over Rich and it is giving him trouble. They exchange some punches and then Silva locks in his extremely powerful clinch.
They grapple for position then Silva starts landing some good knees to Franklin's body and then to the head. Rich is badly rocked and Silva follows up with more knees eventually breaking Rich's nose and sending him to the canvas.

Winner and new middleweight champion: Anderson Silva

Throughout the night they paid tribute to Ken Shamrock in some very respectful and classy montages. It was a fitting way to send a hall of famer out of the Octagon and back in to retirement where says he will stay.....only time will tell if he really does. Great night of fights for the UFC.

UFC 64: Unstoppable Results!
Mandalay Bay Events Center, Nevada
October 14, 2006

Being touted as the most dangerous striker in the UFC can be a tough reputation to live up to, but Anderson Silva has earned that moniker and now has the UFC Middleweight Title to wrap around his waist after knocking out reigning champion Rich Franklin in just under four minutes.

In front of an announced attendance of 10,773, in only his second UFC fight, Silva came out and established himself early, never letting Franklin put any combinations together, while feeling out the distance, seemingly biding his time waiting to strike.

Silva eventually closed the gap and engaged Franklin with his famous Muay Thai clinch, which seemed to stop the Ohio native dead in his tracks. After throwing multiple knees to Franklin’s midsection, Silva started to rear back and aim for the head instead. It was Silva’s grip and power in the clinch that found a heavy knee strike that landed squarely on Franklin’s jaw, which sent him reeling. Another well-placed knee from the clinch landed brutally on Franklin's nose and appeared to have broken it. A few punches and another knee sent Franklin crumbling down to the canvas, and referee Big John McCarthy stepped in before too much damage could be inflicted. With that, Anderson Silva became the UFC Middleweight Champion.

In two bouts and just under five minutes in the UFC, Anderson Silva has established himself as one of the best fighters in the world at 185 pounds and quite possibly the best striker the UFC has ever seen. Having always been a top notch fighter, this win for Silva comes as no real surprise to followers of the sport who have seen him perform in other shows across the world. Now, Anderson Silva will look to make his first title defense as the new 185lb champion while Rich Franklin recovers from only his 2nd loss in almost 25 professional fights.

On the same night that Anderson Silva became the new Middleweight Champion, the UFC was guaranteed to finally re-crown a Lightweight Champion for the first time in almost 5 years when Sean Sherk took on Kenny Florian on Saturday night. Both fighters felt confident coming into the bout, but Sherk was a heavy favorite on paper with more experience and his only pro losses coming at the hands of the two best welterweight fighters in the world (Matt Hughes and Georges St. Pierre).

As the fight began is was obvious that Sherk wanted to keep it on the ground as he almost immediately shot in for a takedown, putting Florian on his back. Sherk worked from inside Florian’s guard effectively, never allowing the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt to attempt any serious submission but also lacked hitting his opponent with any real offensive firepower. The 2nd round saw much of the same but Florian did manage some elbow strikes on the ground, one of which opened a huge cut on Sherk’s forehead that almost immediately started to pour blood onto the canvas and his opponent. The fight was stopped momentarily but with the gash being on the upper forehead and being no real danger to Sherk’s vision the fight continued.

Basically the remainder of the final 3 rounds went almost exactly the same with Sherk taking Florian down but never really establishing any dominant ground and pound but also keeping full control of the action. When the fight was stood up, Florian did land some nice kicks to Sherk’s midsection but inevitably the fight always ended up back on the ground. While Sherk’s dominance in the fight can’t be overlooked, the referee’s decision to only stand the fighters up a handful of times over the course of 5 rounds is more than baffling. The lulls in the bout seemed plentiful and it seems like the action should have been restarted multiple times but rarely was. When it was all said and done, the unanimous decision went to Sean Sherk, thus crowning him the new UFC Lightweight Champion.

Jon Fitch kept up his winning ways with a unanimous decision win over the debuting Kuniyoshi Hironaka in a 3 round bout. Fitch did struggle against Hironaka for much of the first round and was in a triangle choke from which he struggled to escape. While Hironaka kept up the pace for much of the fight, it was Fitch who eventually countered and then started to unload shots while working his ground game. The second and third rounds were also a mix of takedowns and ground and pound from Fitch, and in the end the judges all scored the bout in his favor.

Carmelo Marrero made a successful UFC debut by defeating Cheick Kongo by split decision in their bout. Marrero kept to a very smart game plan, which must have involved keeping Kongo on the ground, as he couldn’t do any real damage while striking. Marrero controlled the ground work for most of the fight and every time the two were stood up he easily took his opponent back down again. After three rounds, Marrero was declared the winner in a largely uninteresting fight.

The main card of UFC 64 opened with lightweight sensation Spencer Fisher taking on Dan Lauzon, the younger brother of Joe Lauzon, who just last month knocked out Fisher’s teammate, Jens Pulver in his comeback to the Octagon. Lauzon looked very solid in the opening minutes, taking the fight to the ground and striking Fisher at every opportunity. When the fight did make its way back to the stand-up position, it was clear that Lauzon had gassed trying to get to Fisher early and this gave way to the Miletich team member landing a good knee strike, followed by punches that floored Lauzon and handed Fisher a TKO win in the first round.

UFC 64 was a disappointment in some ways, with three of the five main card fights going to decisions. Sherk and Florian would almost have to meet again at some point down the road after questionable decision making by the referee, who almost never stood the fight up during the down moments when the action was lacking on the ground. Spencer Fisher continued to look impressive and may be one of the fighters on the short list to get the first shot at Sherk’s newly won title. The fighter of the night was definitely Anderson Silva, who absolutely dominated and decimated the #1 middleweight in the world and now takes the UFC Middleweight Title back to Brazil, where he will await his first title defense as champion.

Full Results (including prelims)

-Anderson Silva def. Rich Franklin by TKO (referee stoppage due to strikes) at 3:59 of Round 1 to win the UFC Middleweight Title

Denis Kang two wins away from PRIDE GP title
By Jagit Sidhu

Every top-level fighter has gone through a lot to be where they are, and I am not saying that Denis Kang has had the hardest road there, but considering recent circumstances, he has to be one of the toughest men in the sport. From early in Denis’s career he was never expected to do much. Fighting in small shows in Western Canada isn’t exactly hitting the big time. However, when Denis Kang was working his way through the ranks of the Canadian middleweight scene he never gave up and always fought as if he was fighting for the PRIDE belt. To Denis Kang every fight could be his last.

After fighting in Canada and the United States in small shows compiling a mediocre record of 7-7, he finally got his big break in June of 2004 when Spirit Martial Challenge gave him the call, while he was in Korea reconnecting with his father. In his first fight he fought South African Kobus Huisamen who he defeated in the first round by TKO. In September of that very same year, SM Challenge gave him a seed in their Grand Prix. He won the grand prix easily, disposing of three Korean fighters. This was the night that put Denis Kang on the map.

After the Grand Prix Denis Kang fought one more fight in Russia, and then in April of 2005 he made his PRIDE debut. He defeated Takahiro Oba by armbar in the very first round at the 6th volume of the BUSHIDO series. He then went on a 3-fight win streak in PRIDE. He carried all this momentum into the PRIDE welterweight Grand Prix. Denis Kang was the proverbial dark horse in the tournament. In the first round of the tournament, he was given Chute Boxe star Murilo “Ninja” Rua, who had faced fighters like Dan Henderson, Ricardo Arona, Mario Sperry, Akiro Shoji, Sergei Kharitonov, and Quinton Jackson amongst others. Just to be fighting someone with the status of Ninja had to be something like a dream for a kid from Vancouver, B.C. Yet Denis Kang refused to be star struck or intimidated. In shocking fashion, Denis Kang knocked out Ninja in a mere 15 seconds of the very first round. Experts were stunned and Denis Kang had officially arrived. The second round of the tournament did not get any easier for Denis Kang. Instead of an easy fight to make his way into the finals, he got Amar Suloev. Now, if you know anything about MMA, I don’t think I need to explain this man. Again Denis Kang was the underdog, and yet again he shocked everyone by disposing of Amar with relative ease early in the first round.

Now Denis Kang has officially cemented himself as one of the top middleweights in the world. Some websites have him ranked as high as 5th in the world. Denis Kang is two fights away from the Grand Prix belt. Executives at the top ranks in PRIDE have matched Denis Kang up with charismatic Japanese star, Akihiro Gono. Denis Kang is now one of the favorites to win the tournament with the surprising elimination of champion Dan Henderson.

Denis Kang’s career looked like it was finally about to culminate in a major championship, and then on the morning of September 23 2006, tragedy struck. Shelby Walker, long time girlfriend and fiancé of Denis Kang, was found dead of an apparent overdose of pain medicine. Shelby Walker also fought MMA and had compiled a record of 2-3. She was a long time member of American Top Team.

I would like to take this time to offer my deepest condolences to both the Walker family and to Denis Kang. No one ever deserves to lose someone they love. The entire situation has been made even more tragic due to the timing. Denis Kang was mere weeks from the biggest night of his fighting life and this tragedy has surely put the fighting part of his life into the bottom of his priority list.

There is only so much adversity that a fighter can overcome before he eventually has to take some time off. Denis Kang has went through a lot in the last few weeks but I think he is far from finished in this tournament. He for sure has the skill set to win this tournament; the only question is whether or not he still has the desire to win. Whatever Denis Kang’s decision is the one thing that is for sure is that his true fans (myself included) are behind him both in and out of the ring.

Demian Maia: First MMA belt
By Marcelo Alonso

Champion of the BJJ Worlds in 2005 under Ronaldo Jacaré and vice-champion of ADCC 2005, losing the final also to Jacaré the BJJ black belt Demian Maia did bring his good ground game to the Super Challenge rings. The Brasa athlete was the great champion of the GP until 83kg, defeating great athletes as Katel Kubis, Gustavo Ximú and Fábio Negão, who he already faced 14 times. Demian Maia gave us an interview just after winning and he tells us how was winning using just his BJJ. Check it out:

Did you expect a victory like that, with no injuries?
I didn't expect anything. I think that our BJJ is like that. We must fight and get no hurts and don't hurt our adversary. This is a wonderful art, where we can defeat someone with no pain and hurts.

The fight against Gustavo Ximú was the toughest one for you?
That was tough. He is tough and experienced. But I was nervous about Katel, I was more nervous in my first fight. I know he is a good striker, he was much wrost standed up, but Ximpu is experienced, so he waited for a good time, he was clever.

Did you start fighting with Vitor Belfort and with Leozinho Vieira?
Just in MMA. Fábio Gurgel helped me a lot in Vale-Tudo in Venezuela and after that I trained for about one year with Vitor, Leo and all of them. And them I stopped to be focus in BJJ, but now Macaco is there to fight me.

Do you expect a Pride invitation?
Yes! This is my dream since I was a kid. It is still soon, I know I am not a top one yet, I am not experienced, I just have five bouts, but I know I am doing a good job and I am in the right way.

Do you want to change your training now?
I was already training Muay Thai a little bit and then I trained Boxing. I need to improve my game and I know I can do better. But I don't want to let the gi, I want to do both of them together, as Napão did. BJJ is my life, I love fighting with gi and I know it helps me a lot on my ground game.

Which is your message to Léo Santos, who was training a lot and lost in the first stage of the match?
I really like him and I am really sad about what happened. He is a BJJ guy as I am and I like him. I think it could happen with anyone, with me, with any fighter. It happened with him today and can happen to me tomorrow. The standed up fight is always a surprise! This is not a shame!

Spike TV press release says that Tuesday night’s event from Florida drew a 3.1 rating cable, and also beat the Oakland A’s vs. Detroit Tigers game that aired on FOX in the male 18-34 year old demographic. Ratings breakdown here.

“Last night was a turning point for the UFC. This will further drive the evolution of mixed martial arts into a mainstream sport,” said Dana White, President, Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Meanwhile, WWE-promoted ECW drew a 1.8 rating on Tuesday night on the Sci-Fi Channel (the show aired right after the conclusion of UFC’s show on Spike TV). The pro-wrestling writers are going to have a field day with this.

Severn nixed by CSAC

Dan Severn has been denied a fighter's license by the California State Athletic Commission. He was to be in the main event of a new organization's debut show in California, however the CSAC ultimately denied his license and this could very well be the end of the 52 year old fighter's career in the Golden State. It is unclear why the Commission ruled as it did but there was speculation that Severn did not pass the stringent tests the CSAC requires of fighters over the age of 35.

Tanigawa focuses on Sapp & Melendez
By Zach Arnold

Update: Gryphon has more details.

Here’s a screen capture from Dave Meltzer’s Wednesday news update. Would K-1 use this as evidence in court of a breach of contract?

As I noted over at Puroresu Power today, K-1 matchmaker Sadaharu Tanigawa held a press conference to focus on upcoming action the company would take against Bob Sapp. Tanigawa indicated that there were several wrestling groups and a wrestling group trying to produce an MMA show for New Year’s Eve (this sounds like New Japan) that was introduced in booking Sapp.

One item that is starting to gain traction, however, is that Tanigawa also stated that another fighter (Gilbert Melendez) breached a signed K-1 contract in order to work for PRIDE. NHB News has more details (in Japanese). Melendez was promoted by K-1 initially for their Middleweight tournament. Rani Yahya ended up replacing Melendez’s spot. With Melendez fighting Shin’ya Aoki at Bushido on 11/5 at Yokohama Arena, K-1 would view this certainly as a breach of a signed contract (if Melendez did in fact sign one) and require compensation of damages.

The idea that K-1 is going after these guys in court is quite a unique signal and change of pace from the way business normally works in the fight scene over there. The big question is whether or not K-1 can tie these guys up in court and prevent them from making a living in Japan again. If that’s the case, then Sapp & Melendez are going to have a legal war on their hands. Tanigawa indicated that he wanted compensation for damages first (instead of stopping Melendez from fighting), but we’ll see how that plays out.

FRANCA DEFENDS BELT, EILERS & LEVENS WIN

LEMOORE, CA – He didn’t receive a free pass to victory, but Hermes Franca was successful in defending his WEC Lightweight Championship last night at World Extreme Cagefighting 24. Fellow Ultimate Fighting Championship veterans Justin Eilers and Justin Levens were also victorious.

Through the first five minutes of the fight, you would have thought that Franca was surely going to lose his belt. His opponent, Nathan Diaz, used his size and reach advantage to full effect throughout the majority of the first round, keeping Franca at bay with his lengthy punches. Unfortunately for Diaz, he wasn’t able to inflict much damage on the champion, but easily won the first round.

Franca’s cornermen must have lit a fire under him during the rest period as he came out looking like a completely different fighter. He dropped Diaz to the canvas with a looping overhand right. Settling into Diaz’ guard, Franca snatched the arm bar as Diaz tried to reverse position. Locked on fast and tight, Diaz had no choice but to tap out to the excruciating pain as Franca retained his belt.

Both Eilers and Levens dispatched their opponents partway through the opening round. Eilers retained his WEC North American title and continued his winning streak, now at five fights in a row, in front of a crowd that included UFC executives Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta. For his efforts, Levens ended a three-fight skid as he looks to get back on track.

John Polakowski defended Olaf Alfonso’s takedowns en route to a split decision to take the rubber match between the two fighters. Polakowski now sports a record of 2-1 in mixed martial arts competition, all three fights being against Alfonso, so maybe now he will be able to move on and add a little variety to his list of opponents.

Pride's Problems

Pride representatives are scrambling to ensure that their American debut show goes off as planned. The organization is plagued with ongoing visa issues with their foreign fighters. Russian and Brazilian fighters and their entourages often have problems getting into this country, as witnessed by the cancellation of Brazilian, Thales Leite's fight in the upcoming UFC. Vitor Belfort is one of Pride's main concerns, as his interview with the American Consulate for a new visa is only set for next week and there is no guarantee that he will secure his visa in time for his fight against Dan Henderson.

After Pride lost it's contract with Fuji television, there has been a sense of urgency that they make a succesful launch into the lucrative American maket. By staging their show in Las Vegas, Pride is making a statement that they are ready to dethrone the UFC in their own backyard. Dreamstage Entertainment (Pride's parent company) has their U.S. office based in San Francisco, California and they are working overtime to guarantee the show goes off without a hitch. With so much on the line it could be that the toughest fight for Pride will this time be outside the ring.

Renzo vs. Carlos Newton in December
IFL team championship finals at Mohegan Sun

by Jerry Milani

The International Fight League (IFL) today announced that the 2006 World Team Championship final will be held at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, on Friday, December 29 at 7 p.m. The evening will feature the winning teams from the November 2 semifinal between Bas Rutten’s Anacondas and Matt Lindland’s Wolfpack, as well as Pat Miletich’s Silverbacks vs. Carlos Newton’s Dragons. The night will also feature five Superfights, including Renzo Gracie (Holmdel, N.J.) and Newton (Newmarket, Ontario) facing off for just the second time ever. Tickets for the IFL World Team Championship Final at Mohegan Sun are on sale now and are available through the Mohegan Sun Box Office and Ticketmaster.

The remaining Superfight schedule will be announced shortly.

"We are very excited to return to the East Coast and have our first event at Mohegan Sun," IFL co-founder and Commissioner Kurt Otto said. "The feedback we have received in Portland, Moline and Atlantic City has been nothing but positive and we know that this will be the perfect venue for us to both wrap up our 2006 events and look ahead to our first full season in 2007."

The Anacondas reached the Nov. 2 semifinals (being held in Portland, Oregon) by sweeping the Sabres (based in Tokyo), 5-0, on September 9, the same night that that Portland’s Wolfpack defeated the Tiger Sharks (based in Seattle), 3-2. The Silverbacks edged the Pitbulls (based in New York), 3-2, while the Dragons (based in Toronto) edged the Razorclaws (based in San Jose), 3-2, Sept. 23 in Moline, Illinois. Newton and Gracie have faced each other only once before, with Newton taking a split decision on Oct. 5, 2003, in Saitama, Japan.

Is this the big Japanese arrest?
By Zach Arnold

I am strongly encouraging our Japanese readers to help out with gathering information for this story. Please contribute if you can.

In the last several years, times have been tough for the various Japanese media outlets. As business has declined, so have profits and ultimately many publications have had to restructure their companies or lay off employees (as was the case with Weekly Fight newspaper). In one of the last issues of Weekly Fight, the newspaper made a claim that someone big in the fight industry was going to be arrested soon. This created a myriad of rumors and speculation as to which big name was going to be arrested by the police. There was all sorts of speculation (ranging from fighters to promoters). It appears that this speculation was misfocused.

Someone with a sharp eye over at NHB News has picked up on what could be a very explosive story in regards to the impact it has on the Japanese fight media. The NHB News post claims that the President of Gong (which has Weekly Gong and Gong Kakutougi magazines) had his house searched by Tokyo Metropolitan Police (specifically their organized crime task force(s)). The post links to a newspaper report in Tokyo Shimbun about the owner of a computer company called ADTX. The claim is that ADTX, which was created in 1993 and listed on the Osaka Securities Exchange (Hercules) in December of 2001, started creating false financial statements (”window dressing”) after the company started going into debt. The company was delisted from the stock exchange and the Tokyo Shimbun report lists the company’s debts (as of February of 2006) at 14.9 billion yen.

Because this story could get so complex and so detailed, I am hoping that our Japanese readers can help out with story details and/or news links to this.

TUF 4 DRAWS ALL-TIME SERIES LOW RATING
by Ivan Trembow - MMAWeekly.com

Episode Eight of The Ultimate Fighter 4 drew a disappointing 1.1 overall rating on Thursday, October 5th.

This ties the all-time series low for a regularly scheduled episode of TUF, which was previously set by Episode Nine of the second season and by Episode Four of this season just a few weeks ago.

Compared to the previous week's disappointing ratings, Episode Eight was down from 1.3 overall to 1.1 overall. In the 18-to-49-year-old demographic, it was down from 1.6 to 1.4. In the 18-to-34-year-old male demographic, it was down from 2.1 to 1.7, which is the second-lowest rating that TUF has ever drawn in the most advertiser-coveted demographic

TUF 4 is Least-Watched Season to Date

On a larger scale than one week of disappointing ratings, the general public's interest level in TUF has never been lower, based on all of the Neilsen data. In the 18-to-49-year-old male demographic, TUF 4 has averaged a 1.7 rating through its first eight episodes, which is down from Season Three's 2.2 average at the same point.

Even more significantly, in the advertiser-friendly 18-to-34-year-old male demographic, TUF 4 has averaged a 2.2 rating through its first eight episodes, which is down significantly from Season Three's 2.9 average.

It's natural for one to think that this is merely because TUF 3 was such a ratings sensation, but the unflattering comparisons do not end with TUF 3. Through eight episodes, TUF 4 is averaging a 1.3 overall rating.

This average of 1.3 is down from the first season's average of 1.7 through eight episodes; it's down from the first season's 1.6 average at the same point in the season; and yes, it's even down from the much-maligned second season's average of 1.5 at the same point in the season.

Competition for Male Viewers Smaller for TUF 4 Than it Was for TUF 2

There is a perception that TUF 4 is going up against stiffer competition than previous seasons of TUF when it comes to male-oriented programming, but that is not actually the case.

The fourth season of TUF has had to go head-to-head with a regular season NFL game exactly one time (on September 7th).

On the other hand, The Ultimate Fighter 2 went head-to-head with ratings powerhouse Monday Night Football on ABC for all but three weeks of its entire season, and yet TUF 2 still drew better ratings than TUF 4 has drawn up to this point. In addition, TUF 2 aired in a worse timeslot (11:00 PM) when the total amount of people watching television is significantly smaller.

The Monday Night Football broadcasts that went head-on with TUF 2 drew an average rating of 10.0 overall, a significant percentage of which were the young adult male viewers that watch the UFC. Other than one week of NFL football, TUF 4 has faced nothing of the sort, instead going up against baseball games with overall ratings in the 4's and 5's, as well as college football games with ratings in the 2's.

UFC Unleashed Generating Just as Much or More Interest than TUF

It is becoming more and more apparent with each passing week that a significant number of viewers, first numbering in the thousands and now well into the six figures, consider themselves to be "UFC fans" or "MMA fans," but are not interested in watching this season of TUF for whatever reason.

This point is demonstrated week after week by the fact that replays of old fights that have already been replayed numerous times on Spike TV have been generating just as much viewer interest as brand new episodes of The Ultimate Fighter. The repeat of UFC Unleashed that aired immediately before Episode Eight of TUF 4 drew the same overall rating as TUF: 1.1.

In a somewhat alarming sign, several hundred thousand television viewers who had been watching UFC Unleashed actually changed the channel at 10:00 PM when UFC Unleashed ended and TUF started. The rating normally darts upward right at 10:00 PM, as one would expect when a repeat is ending and a new episode of an original series is just starting, but the opposite was true in this case.

The quarter-hour rating for the end of UFC Unleashed was 1.3 overall, and this number actually decreased to 1.0 for the beginning of TUF. The amount of people who were watching TUF did not increase all that much from there, as the show-closing fight between Patrick Cote and Jorge Rivera averaged a 1.2 rating.

This could indicate that more viewers are interested in actual fights, or that many viewers may have soured on the general concept of watching a reality show about MMA (because they would rather just watch the fights), or that some specific elements of TUF 4 have turned off viewers and have made them not want to watch the show anymore. More than likely, it's a combination of these factors, but whatever the reason, this has to cause concern for the ratings of the already-ordered TUF 5, TUF 6, and TUF 7.

On a broader scale, only two of the last six repeat airings of UFC Unleashed have drawn lower ratings than the 1.1 overall rating that a new episode of TUF drew on October 5th, and even those two Unleashed repeats drew overall ratings of 1.0.

There has never been a regularly scheduled new episode of TUF that has drawn a 1.0 overall rating, but with the way the ratings have been going this season, it could very well happen at some point in the coming weeks unless there is a major change in momentum.

Network Competition on October 5th, and Octagon Girl Search Ratings

Airing head-to-head with The Ultimate Fighter on Thursday, October 5th from 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM, ABC's Six Degrees continued its steady decline in viewership, as it drew an overall rating of just 6.6, which will eventually get the show cancelled if there is no ratings improvement. Six Degrees no longer approaches Shark on CBS, which drew a 9.2 overall rating. Also, while ER is nowhere near the ratings force that it was once, the veteran drama series won the hour with a 9.6 overall rating on NBC.

Airing head-to-head with UFC Unleashed in the 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM hour, Grey's Anatomy out-drew CSI for the third consecutive week, as Grey's Anatomy drew a 14.8 overall rating and CSI drew a 13.3 overall rating. Within the TV industry, the realization is starting to sink in that it was not a one-time aberration, and the show that was previously the most-watched show on television really has been dethroned by the up-and-coming medical drama. Also in this hour, NBC's Deal or No Deal drew a 6.3 overall rating (solid considering the overwhelming competition), and the Major League Baseball Playoffs drew a disappointing 4.1 overall rating on Fox.

Airing in primetime on Monday, October 2nd at 10:00 PM, the UFC Octagon Girl Search bombed with a 0.6 overall rating. The show didn't fare much better in the advertiser-targeted demographics, as it drew a rating of just 0.8 in the 18-to-34-year-old male demographic, and a rating of just 0.6 in the 18-to-49-year-old male demographic.

Airing immediately after The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV on October 5th was the pro wrestling show TNA Impact, which drew a 0.8 overall rating.

"Success without honor is an unseasoned dish; it will satisfy your hunger,

Vítor Shaolin: "I did my homework"

Still in England, the Nova União BJJ black belt Vítor Shaolin commented about his victory at Cage Rage 18, on September 30th, under Abdul Mohamed with a kimura, in his first belt defense of the event. "I did my homework really well. We had some doubt about my position, but in the middle of the fight he gave me some space so I put him down. The fight was very good, even because that was a Brazilian clime there. The audience really liked that and I felt myself at home before and after the bout", declared Shaolin, who stays in England until October 8th giving some seminars. "I want to came back and enjoy my son who is just 15 days old and then enjoy my family", finished the Nova União black belt.

JZ AND AKIYAMA WIN HEROS TOURNEY

Brevity best described last evening’s event at the Yokohama Arena in Japan. With only two matches going to a decision, short fights highlighted the seventh installment of K-1 Hero’s. Two new tournament champions were crowned and an intriguing match-up was potentially set for K-1’s New Year’s Eve show.

Cage Warriors super heavyweight champion Antonio Silva made short work of Georgy Kaysinov in the opening fight of the evening. Silva dropped the Russian with a left hook about one minute into the first round. Silva followed up with strikes on the ground, forcing the ref to stop the fight.

It took less than two minutes for Hideo Tokoro to submit actor turned MMA fighter Ken Kaneko. Tokoro took his opponent down early and the fight remained there until Hideo secured an armbar. K-1 Hero’s executive Akira Maeda expressed his displeasure regarding Kaneko using his celebrity status to get the opportunity to fight on a major show instead of earning his way through the ranks.

In the first 154-pound tournament match of the night, American Top Team’s Gesias “JZ” Calvancanti submitted Rickson Gracie protégé Rani Yahira to move on to the finals. Rani pulled guard early in the fight and was unable to take Gesias down. It was apparent Gesias had a size and strength advantage over the smaller Yahira. About twenty seconds into the first round, Yahira shot in deep for a takedown which Calvancanti transitioned into a guillotine choke. Shockingly, the BJJ black belt was forced to tap shortly after.

Caol Uno earned a unanimous decision over Ivan Menjivar in the second 154-pound tournament semi-final. Uno landed low kicks early while Menjivar’s punches missed their target. The remainder of the fight consisted of Uno landing low and mid kicks while Ivan began to open up more with his strikes. Surprisingly, this fight only went to the mat once.

In the first 187-pound tournament semi-final, Korean Judoka Yoshihiro Akiyama faced off against Shooto European middleweight champion Kestutis Smirnovas. Akiyama wore a gi into the ring but took it off before the start of the fight. The two circled each other early on with Akiyama landing low kicks. The kicks were hitting their mark as the Lithuanian fighter’s thigh began to discolor. About three minutes into the first round, Akiyama hits Smirnovas with a straight right that stunned him. Yoshihiro followed up with a clean high kick and some strikes to win via TKO.

It took a little over a minute for heavy-handed Dutch striker Melvin Manhoef to finish Shungo Oyama and advance into the finals. These two fighters first met at K-1 Hero’s 4 with Manhoef emerging the victor. The rematch started off tentative until Oyama failed to secure a single leg takedown. Manhoef countered with a left hook that staggered the Judoka. The Dutchman proceeded to chase Shungo to the other side of the ring while landing a barrage of strikes. The referee halted the action after a right hook dropped Oyama.

In the 154-pound reserve match, Kazuyuki Miyata rebounded from his 4-second loss to Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto with a TKO win over Ian James Schaffa. Miyata took Schaffa down early with a throw and began to land multiple right hands. Schaffa suffered a cut from all of the punishment and the fight was stopped due to the doctor’s recommendation.

Carlos Newton made a successful return to MMA after a near two year layoff from competition. In the 187-pound reserve match, Newton finished Tokimitsu Ishizawa with strikes in the first round. “The Ronin” made quick work of Ishizawa and landed just three punches.

PRIDE and UFC veteran Don Frye knocked out heavyweight Korean Judoka Kim Min Soo with a right hook in the second round of their exhausting battle.

In the 154-pound finals, Gesias Calvancanti earned a majority decision over Caol Uno to win the K-1 Hero’s 2006 middleweight tournament. Calvancanti steadily moved forward on the former Shooto champion while staying busy with more strikes. “JZ” rushed the Japanese fighter with a big flurry in the first round that pushed Uno to the mat. Most of the punches didn’t land clean and Uno eventually got back to his feet. Later, a slip from a kick had Uno fighting from his back until the end of the round.

The second round was controlled by Calvancanti. The American Top Team fighter scored three takedowns and nearly finished Uno with strikes at the end of the round. I’m not sure how one judge ruled the bout a draw as Calvancanti clearly won this fight.

Yoshihiro Akiyama withstood an aggressive onslaught from Melvin Manhoef to win the K-1 Hero’s 187-pound tournament. Manhoef chased the Judoka around the ring throwing left and right hooks. The two fighters clinched and Akiyama was able to reverse Manhoef’s throw, landing into a full mount. The Dutch striker didn’t stay there for long and eventually made it back to his feet. Akiyama secured Melvin’s left arm in a standing clinch and Manhoef tried to break his hold by slamming him to the mat. The move proved to be Manhoef’s downfall as Akiyama was put into an advantageous position. Yoshihiro secured an armbar shortly after, forcing his opponent to tap.

The crowd cheered loudly as Akiyama lied on the mat in tears. Afterwards, the Judoka said he looked forward to fighting Kazushi Sakuraba, possibly at K-1’s New Year’s Eve show.

Overall, K-1 Hero’s 7 was a very good event. Two new stars were born in Gesias “JZ” Calvancanti and Yoshihiro Akiyama. Having been criticized for the quality of his past opponents, Akiyama defeated two solid fighters and gained the admiration of the Japanese fans. On paper, this event didn’t seem very intriguing but it turned out to be a very entertaining evening.

PAT MILETICH DISCUSSES GRACIE, IFL, AND FUTURE

On September 23rd, “The Croatian Sensation,” Pat Miletich, returned to mixed martial arts competition in the International Fight League (IFL) pitted against Renzo Gracie.

On an evening that saw his star pupil, UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes, successfully defend his title, and his IFL team, The Quad City Silverbacks, come away with another team victory, Miletich’s comeback bout ended in disappointment.

Miletich spoke with MMAWeekly following the event about the fight, the loss, and his future.

Asked, “How was it being back in there again, despite the result?” Miletich answered, “You know what? It was satisfying just to be able to be back in there to be honest with you, to be healthy enough to climb back in there. I went over a lot of hurdles, and without my wife supporting me and taking care of everything for me it wouldn’t have been able to happen; I can tell you that.”

Miletich entered the ring just moments after IFL CEO Gareb Shamus announced to the crowd that Matt Hughes defeated BJ Penn by TKO in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The pro-Miletich crowd erupted in cheers. As Pat came out, the response was overwhelming.

Questioned about his reception from the spectators, Miletich said, “It was awesome. It was awesome. I was very happy to bring a show of this magnitude to the Quad Cities because they’ve been very loyal fans to the team.”

Miletich looked comfortable and poised as the opening bell sounded signaling the start of the fight. Discussing the bout, Pat commented, “When he shot in on my legs the first time he was in deep. I was able to battle that out and stuff his takedown. I think that after that he realized he wasn’t going to take me down, so he just went for broke.”

Renzo was able to sink in a Guillotine Choke and jump to guard with Miletich standing near the ropes. “He just inched his arm a little bit over my head and left it there. I had control of his hand, and I was stopping it. And then I felt safe, and like a fool I let go of his hand, and that is when he locked it up. I didn’t think that he thought he had anything to be honest with you,” Miletich told MMAWeekly.

He further stated, “I knew that he wanted to go for a submission. I knew that was his game and stuff. And by pushing into him into the ropes I kind of played into it a little bit. He did a great job. He stuck with that submission for how long? How long did he have me in that?”

Gracie worked the submission for well over a minute before securing it enough to force Miletich to tap.

Asked the inevitable question, “Do you have anymore fights in you?” Pat responded, “More than likely I’m done. Like I said, for me, I made a goal to get back in and fight, and fight a big name guy. I don’t want to go in and fight a guy just so I can get a victory. I don’t want to fight a tomato can. That, to me, is not challenging myself. It’s kind of a waste. It’s like, why should I be climbing a hill when I should be climbing a mountain?”

As previously mentioned, Matt Hughes fought the same night across the country in California in the UFC. Usually Miletich would be cornering Hughes, or Hughes would be cornering Pat. The conflict of schedule prevented the usual from occurring.

Posed with the question, “What was it like not being there; knowing he was fighting with the UFC welterweight belt on the line?” Miletich said, “It was tough not being there, but it was tougher not having him in my corner to be honest with you... he and I have been together for so long. It would have been nice to have him there.”

Jens Pulver, another Team Miletich fighter, also competed on the UFC card that night, losing in the first round by TKO to Joe Lauzon. Questioned, “What upset you more, Jens Pulver getting knocked out, or your loss to Renzo Gracie?” Pat answered, “They’re both obviously upsetting. It’s bad for Jens. Jens is a better fighter than that. It is sad because that was his coming home party also in the UFC.”

With Pat Miletich’s fighting career most likely over, he has shifted his focus to being a trainer and coach.

His led IFL Silverbacks went 3-2 in team competition, advancing that much closer to repeat as IFL team champions. Asked, “Has that become your new goal?” Miletich said, “Yeah. I’m excited. I think now that I am back to coaching, sharpen the team up and make sure we win the championship. That is definitely my goal.”

Hughes Squashes Rumors

This past week, rumors have been circulating like wildfire that Matt Hughes may have to pull out of his scheduled UFC 65 rematch with number one contender, Georges St. Pierre due to injury. Thankfully, Matt has responded to the gossip with a statement he made in his website’s blog. I gathered that any injury he may have is a standard post fight injury and one that can be worked through. Here is what

Matt’s blog said :

“This week I'm pretty much farming with Mark the whole time, I do have a camera crew here today and tomorrow shooting for an All Access special. This will be my last week of recoup and I want to spend all of that time with my family before I start training for Georges. As far as the rumors on the internet, I have no idea what they are talking about. –Matt”

He doesn’t go in to detail, but he pretty much comes out and says he is healthy enough to start training again. He also makes it apparent that he is just letting his body recover as he would after any fight.

Interview with Sean Sherk

MaxFighting: How shocked were you when the UFC approached you and offered you the lightweight title shot?

Sean Sherk: I wasn’t real shocked, you know seeing as I was going to drop the weight class and there was not a champion, I figured they would want to crown a champion real soon. They have so many shows and they need main events. I kind of expected it, but I thought I might have to fight one time at the weight class first before I got my title shot, but I wasn’t surprised at all. I was kind of expecting it I guess.

MaxFighting: Some assumed that with your win over Diaz that you were back on track to get a title shot at the welterweight title again. Was it a hard decision to choose between dropping the weight and staying at 170?

Sean Sherk: Something I had thought about for a long time was dropping to 155. I had no reason to drop to 155 being that there was no real, solid weight class. There was no UFC title, so there was no real reason for me to drop. When they brought the weight class back, I knew that they were going to want to crown a champion so for me I just think it was time. I’m always trying to evolve and get better. It’s just part of my evolution that I am dropping down a weight class and just kind of going from there.

MaxFighting: So was it any surprise to you at all that the name Kenny Florian was put in front of you instead of someone like Stevenson?

Sean Sherk: Well, you know at the time I dropped weight, three of the fighters I had expected to face got beat. Josh Thompson got beat, Yves Edwards got beat, and Joe Stevenson got beat. That’s why I expected to fight at the weight class once maybe over a six month time period in which they could build up a formidable opponent for me to fight for the title. I wasn’t surprised to hear Kenny’s name, though. They built him up, he's coming off three wins in a row, and he’s got all of the popularity from the television show so, I wasn’t surprised to hear that name at all.

MaxFighting: When they told you that you were fighting Florian at UFC 64, was that the original date or was there another date you two were supposed to fight on?

Sean Sherk: I was supposed to fight, we were supposed to fight in August at UFC 62 I believe it was….

MaxFighting: That’s right.

Sean Sherk: I was training, I was ready to fight and about six weeks before the fight I was told that the fight was being cancelled for whatever reason. Then they tried to find me another opponent, a couple of guys turned it down, and then I had no one to fight for UFC 62. So, they ended up having to push it back to October. They pushed it back a few months on me. Yeah, I mean I wanted to fight in August because I don’t like being laid off this long. I got laid off for seven months after the St. Pierre fight now I’m getting laid off for almost seven months after the Diaz fight. That’s two fights in fourteen months and that’s just not enough for me.

MaxFighting: So you're at the last couple of weeks before your fight, what’s that going to be like for you? Do you turn it up a notch or stay the same?

Sean Sherk: I’m, I mean I’m training full force. I mean, I’m always training full force ten to twelve weeks before the fight, like ten to twelve weeks out I’m training hard. I just keep everything going as it is and I don’t change anything. I don’t stop training hard until like two days before the fight.

MaxFighting: When you step in to that Octagon with Kenny, do you think he has any intentions of taking you down?

Sean Sherk: I don’t know what he’s got in mind. You know one thing’s for sure, I mean he’s going to try and cut me *laughs*

MaxFighting: *laughs*

Sean Sherk: He thinks his elbows are great and he wants to cut me. He wants to cut me, get out of there as fast as he can, and get an easy win. He might shoot in or try to outbox me. I don’t know what he’s going to try to do. I’m ready for whatever he is doing. I mean, I am training with the best guys in the world so whatever he throws at me I’ll be ready for it.

MaxFighting: Sean thanks for talking with us.

Thanks for having me.
