International Fight League (IFL)
Becomes Publicly Traded Company

Wednesday November 29, 7:00 am ET
Completes Merger and Begins Trading Under New Stock Symbol: IFLI

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--International Fight League, Inc. (OTCBB: IFLI - News), the world's first team-based professional mixed martial arts league, today reached another milestone in its early history, becoming one of a handful of professional sports entities to be traded as a public company. Effective today, the IFL begins trading on the over the counter bulletin board under the symbol "IFLI."

"This is a landmark day for all fight sports, ranging from Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) to professional boxing," said IFL CEO Gareb Shamus. "As a publicly traded sports entity, the IFL will be able to help the sport grow beyond its current boundaries and move into the mainstream with both fans and business partners. MMA has seen some significant growth in the last few years, from the emergence of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on Spike TV to increasing ratings and attendance numbers, and we expect our model to add to that success in this new expanded international sports marketplace."

"For a long time, champions of the sport like Ken Shamrock, Frank Shamrock, Renzo Gracie, Matt Lindland, Bas Rutten, Antonio Inoki and Pat Miletich have never been able to achieve the renown in the mainstream that they have long sought," said IFL Commissioner Kurt Otto. "By becoming a public company and having them part of the IFL, we feel that not only these legends, but the next wave of athletes, will get more of what they work for and deserve in terms of recognition. It's a great day for all fans, business partners and competitors in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts."

The IFL, which began less than eight months ago with the IFL "Legends Championship" at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey has already experienced success on every level. Early developments have included:

A deal with Fox Sports Net (FSN) to cover the initial IFL events that grew from three hours in the spring to 10 hours in the fall and pulled in millions of viewers.
Initial business partners such as Microsoft's XBox, Suzuki, Dale and Thomas Popcorn, Coca Cola's Vault brand and Sandal's Resorts.
Attendance at events in Atlantic City, Portland, Oregon and Moline, Illinois exceeded original projections.
The attendance at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut for the "World Team Championship" final on Friday December 29 is also expected to be near-capacity.
The League will very soon announce its 11 date schedule for its 2007 regular season, and will begin 2007 with a 12 team field representing 10 United States cities (including four teams in California, two in Illinois and others) Toronto, Ontario and Tokyo, Japan. The League plans further expansion to include additional teams from around the globe.

Each of the nine regular season IFL events will consist of four teams - each with an athlete in all five weight classes competing - along with a special Superfight, for a minimum of 11 bouts per card. The team that wins the best three of five match setup will be declared the team winner for the match, similar to collegiate and high school wrestling meets. The IFL also differs from other MMA organizations in that the bouts are held in an oversized five rope boxing ring with three four minute rounds, each designed to create the most compelling in-arena experience for local fans.

All events will be subject to the rules and approval of the applicable state athletic commission. The scoring system is similar to professional boxing as well. However, in the event of a draw, a fourth round will take place to decide a winner.

The four IFL regular season teams with the best records will move on to the IFL semi-finals expected to be in early August, 2007, with the first IFL Team Champion expected to be crowned in mid-September, 2007.

After receiving the requisite shareholder approval at Monday's special meeting of Paligent, Inc. (OTCBB: PGNT - News) shareholders, the IFL completed its previously announced merger with Paligent, which was effective at 1:01 A.M. this morning. The merger became effective immediately after a 1-for-20 reverse stock split by Paligent. Immediately following the merger, Paligent changed its name to International Fight League, Inc. Shareholders of Paligent will continue to own their post-split shares, but will be entitled to receive new certificates representing the same number of IFL shares of common stock as the number of post-split Paligent shares they held, which will constitute approximately 5% of the outstanding stock of IFL. The holders of the pre-merger International Fight League, Inc. shares of common stock (including the converted Series A preferred stock) will be entitled to receive approximately 1.032373 shares of post-merger Paligent shares of common stock, which will constitute approximately 95% of the outstanding stock of IFL. Letters of transmittal will be sent to appropriate holders for them to receive their new shares.

THEY'RE TUF, BUT ARE THEY CHAMPIONS?
An Editorial by Matt Hill

Now that Travis Lutter and Matt Serra have been presented their crowns as the new kings of TUF Season 4, the question looming on everyone’s horizon is, “Are these two men ready for the champions in each of their respective weight classes?”

In his TUF 4 finale fight, Travis Lutter had about as close to a Bobby Southworth deemed ‘Flawless victory’ as any fighter could hope for. Lutter did exactly what he said he would do. He closed the distance between himself and Cote, got the takedown, and finished Patrick with the armbar. I don’t even think that Cote landed a single punch in the short length of that fight. To his credit, no one that Lutter fought in Season 4 even came close to beating him. I give Travis all of the credit that he deserves.

That being said, though, who did Lutter fight on TUF that is as quality of a fighter as Middleweight Champ Anderson Silva? Better yet, which fighters has Travis faced and beaten in his career that are at Silva’s level?

To me the answer to this question is no one. The best competition Lutter has fought in his career is probably Matt Lindland, and he submitted Lutter in the 2nd round.

I am in no way debasing Lutter’s skills as a fighter, though. Lutter has proven himself to be a worthy competitor to fight in the UFC, but I personally don’t see him becoming a middleweight champion anytime soon. I’m not saying that he doesn’t deserve a title shot – that was part of his incentive to do the show – but I am saying that if Lutter walks away with a victory over Silva; whether by submission, knockout or decision I will be astounded. I am not trying to take anything away from Lutter; I just don’t think that he’s in the same league as Rich Franklin or Anderson Silva.

When Anderson Silva smashed Chris Leben in under a minute, I was surprised but not shocked. When Silva smashed Rich Franklin just as dominantly in just under three minutes, I was stunned and definitely impressed. If Lutter beats Anderson Silva, I will be completely dumbstruck.

In my mind, Travis Lutter has about as much of a chance of beating Anderson Silva as Harold Howard from the old-school UFC does of beating Tim Sylvia. It’s always possible, but highly unlikely. Not that Lutter isn’t a stud fighter, but Silva is a beast of a man at 185 pounds and if Travis can’t get him to the ground it will be Silva’s third quick fight in the UFC.

What Lutter does bring to the table are submissions, though, and although Silva is a BJJ blackbelt under the Nogueira brothers, he has been submitted a couple of times. Granted these submissions have been somewhat bizarre ones – like a flying scissor heel hook – but they fall under the broad category of submission losses nevertheless.

As we have seen in his past performances, Lutter is a submission specialist and if he gets you even close to a bad position he will finish you 9.8 times out of 10. The Silva/Lutter fight somewhat reminds me of Tim Sylvia vs. Jeff Monson. Everyone in the universe knows what each fighter is trying to do; it just comes down to who forces his will upon the other man more successfully. The Sylvia/Monson fight also showed that a striker with a good sprawl could control the fight in its entirety. It should be no secret to anyone after two big KO wins in a row that Silva is going to do his best to take Travis’s head off. It also is no big secret that Lutter is going to try his best to get Silva on the ground and into a game of submissions.

This fight along with the Silva/Monson fight more closely resembles what the old UFC attempted to prove. “What happens when a ground fighter fights a standup fighter?” Now I know, fighters nowadays are much more well rounded than their UFC 4 predecessors, but it seems a bit similar to me nonetheless.

On to Matt Serra…

Matt Serra won a very close split decision victory over Chris Lytle to become the welterweight division’s newest TUF champion. Serra seemed to be one of the favorites to win throughout the TUF season, as very few episodes didn’t have him as one of the centers of attention.

Serra’s game plan was much like Lutter’s. Stand and punch only long enough to secure the takedown, and then attempt to dominate the opponent on the ground. While Serra’s game plan worked well throughout his time on TUF, the same game plan simply won’t work against top 170-pound competition.

Since St. Pierre dethroned welterweight champ Matt Hughes Saturday night, it is now Serra’s task to fight Georges ‘Rush’ St. Pierre. I believe that Serra’s chances for victory are almost lower than Lutter’s. St. Pierre is a brutally strong man, and as we saw in Georges’ fight with Sean Sherk and his second fight with Matt Hughes he is nearly impossible to take down. If Serra is forced to stand with Georges it would in my estimation be a quick night for St. Pierre…even completely lopsided, with a win going to Georges.

Don’t get me wrong, Serra has great skills on the ground and some nice punch combinations when on the feet – just ask Karo Parisyan – but after seeing St. Pierre fight Saturday night, I feel sorry for anybody that has to go through him to get to a title.

I don’t know if Serra is able to make the 155 cut, but it seems to me that he could be a much larger (no pun intended) presence in the lightweight division than he could at 170. Din Thomas moved down to lightweight for his most recent fight and he looked phenomenal. Unless Serra physically can’t make it down to 155, I think lightweight is where he belongs. As we all know, the cut to 155 was pretty beneficial to UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk.

Serra is a very talented fighter with great mental strength and self-confidence, but for Matt to be on top of the 170-pound division he would have to outperform Georges St. Pierre, and I simply don’t see that happening right now.

Serra and Lutter are both great competitors, great fighters and ‘TUF’ guys, but the two champions that they happen to be matched up with now are each at the top of their games, and a victory over either of these men at this point in time seems dubious at best.

UFC, WEC and HBO

Recently there have been rumblings that the UFC was in the final stages of buying the WEC. Appearances by the Fertitta brothers at the last WEC show only added fuel to the rumors. But why exactly would America's largest and most well funded fight show have any interest in acquiring a show that holds most of their events in an obscure Indian casino? Most speculated that the UFC would be using their recent acquisition as a feeder system, somewhat like a professional baseball team uses a farm team for future prospects. Upon closer inspection we find that there might be much more than meets the eye in this deal.

It is no secret that the UFC and HBO have been having ongoing negotiations. Some of the main obstacles are that the UFC already enjoys huge pay-per-view numbers and is currently under contract with the Spike network. The fact of the matter is that the UFC does not need the HBO network and having future UFC events on HBO makes no logistical sense. However not partnering up with HBO might be a tactical mistake. It could very well clear the way for a rival show to enjoy mainstream exposure and success.

Showtime's recent partnership with the Rumble on the Rock organization has only hastened HBO's desire to have an MMA show of their own. The 2 networks (HBO and Showtime) have a long history in boxing rivalry. Both understand that in order to compete with each other they must not fall behind in sports programming and that MMA is the new cash cow. What to do?

The WEC could be the answer to this dilemma. It could very well be the show headed to HBO. By buying the WEC, the UFC will avoid contractual conflicts with Spike while at the same time ensuring that HBO would not be a future rival. In a sense they would own the competition and further corner the lucrative American TV market. Airing the UFC, TUF (Spike) and WEC (HBO) will make Zuffa the Rupert Murdoch of MMA programming.

Business must be very good indeed.

Bowe wants to knock 'ungrateful' Holyfield out again

Riddick Bowe a long time ago

By Ant Evans: Former undisputed heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe says he wants to renew his legendary hostilities with Evander Holyfield in the New Year.

Bowe has not fought since April of 2005, when he struggled to beat journeyman Billy Zumbrum, but he insists he will return in 2007 despite turning 40 next summer. Bowe's controversial comeback currently stands at 2-0 (1KO) but 'Big Daddy' believes a fourth fight with 'the Real Deal' would interest fans.

The New York born Bowe told SecondsOut: "Me and Evander is the fight that I really want. Our three fights were the best fights of the 90s and even though we're getting a little older, we could have another great fight."

Holyfield, 44, himself is operating with diminished powers and has also struggled with obtaining a license to box but there are plenty of promoters and big arenas in less well regulated states who would be happy to present Bowe v Holyfield IV.

But one wonders how serious Bowe is, given his inactivity and chronic inability to keep himself in shape.

"It has been a lot harder to get back into shape than I expected," Bowe admitted. "I was living a certain way for a long time and it is a shock to go back to being an athlete again. But this year I've concentrated on keeping my weight down and eating healthy. I train five days a week, taking weekends off, running and hitting the bags, and I've kept my weight at about 250lbs for a year now."

Bowe and Holyfield fought three of the best fights of the 1990s in November 1992, 1993 and 1995. Bowe won the first - and best - fight, lost the infamous rematch on the night when the Fan-Man rained down, and climbed off the floor to become the first man to KO Holyfield in the third fight (and only James Toney, eight years later, has duplicated that feat).

A fourth fight would be a grotesque curiosity, but if a huge crowd of Texans will pay to see Holyfield fight insurance salesman Jeremy Bates, as they did a few months back, then one can only imagine they will pay for Holyfield v Bowe IV.

And Bowe added that his famous friendship with Holyfield is now over.

He said: "When we fought those fights, we became friends and so forth but that's gone away now. I don't like what I see in Evander no more.

"Y'know, we did a fund raiser type function in Oklahoma a year ago and Evander didn't sign autographs for the fans. He just said 'no' to them and I was standing there very embarrassed by all this. I said to Evander 'Why come if you didn't want to sign things for people, why did you come'. I lost respect for him and I want to fight him again.

"He's been blessed and the fans put him where he is, but he didn't care."

Whether or not that is actually the case, Bowe believes he still has the Real Deal's number.

"I haven't been impressed by him as a fighter for years. I was always the better fighter, I won all three fights (sic) we had and I knocked him out in the third fight. I want to knock him out again."

"The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" opens up to MaxFighting
By Sean McClure

Tito Ortiz is one of the most charismatic and recognizable stars of the UFC. His passionate fighting and humorous but often controversial post fight comments inside the Octagon are both legendary and unforgettable. From his reign as the light heavyweight champion to his popularity as a coach on the Ultimate Fighter Season 3, Tito’s stock has skyrocketed since his Octagon return back at UFC 59: Reality Check. After Tito dispatched Forrest Griffin, he quickly squashed Ken Shamrock two times to finally end the vendetta between the two. Now, with three fights in the record books and a title shot on the horizon Tito spoke with MaXfighting about Jenna, life, and his future in the UFC.

MaxFighting: Tito, where are you at in your preparations for your fight for the light heavyweight title at UFC 66?

Tito Ortiz: I’m preparing hard for the fight itself right now. I’m about a month a half in to training. I am about ready to go up to Big Bear tomorrow and I’ll be up there for the next six weeks. Then, I’m back to Vegas to take care of business and get my world title back.

Max: Many people are looking forward to that fight. I have to ask, what is the difference between the Tito Ortiz that fought at UFC 44 and 47 and the Tito Ortiz of today?

Ortiz: I think the Tito today is a lot more focused mentally, physically, and emotionally. Man, I have such a peace of mind. I don’t have to worry about bills and a lot of things I was going through personally before. I’m able to focus on getting my world title back and more than anything just stepping back in the Octagon and getting another win is really important, you know. There’s a lot of things I was really frustrated with the UFC like contract things, money things. Now that I have achieved those things over the year, getting back in to the Octagon is the most important thing in my career right now.

Max: Do you think the rebirth of Team Punishment and its new faces has helped you as a fighter just training with them?

Ortiz: You know, I think it really helps me a whole bunch training with Team Punishment. I think more than anything it’s that there are guys there now that motivate me to be a better fighter. I kind of pushed the acting stuff aside and now it’s just all about fighting. My heart is back where it was four or five years ago, where it needed to be. My focus is where it needs to be and that’s on getting my world title back. I think all the fans that supported me and my clothing company, Punishment Athletics, they really deserve that. I think that them buying the pay per views and supporting me through this whole thing, I mean standing at the top and being a champion is the best thing I can give to those fans. That’s my goal in life right now.

Max: Well, Jackie, your press agent and I talked about all of your charity work. How do you make time out of your crazy training and appearance schedule to do this? Do you have anything going on right now?

Ortiz: As far as charities go right now, I don’t have anything going on, as I’m getting ready for this fight. I think that’s the most important thing for me right now. As far as the charities I have done, I can count from back in the day to the first toy drive, the first Tito Ortiz toy drive in 2000. Everything I had been doing up until now, doing motivational speeches for the Marines down at Camp Pendleton. Doing the blood drive about a month and a half ago, we had about 210 donors and that’s going to save a lot of lives, about 600 lives. Always giving back is the most important thing. I have to use my celebrity status for something, not just making money and fighting. I think it’s more important to be doing the other stuff like saving people’s lives and being and influence into their lives and kind of an inspiration. People had kind of asked me to be a role model and I really don’t want to be one. I make mistakes just like everyone else and I don’t want people following my example when I make them.

Max: Well, this is not a question to stroke your ego and you’re not going to be bragging if you answer this question. Using the ratings that the third Shamrock fight got on Spike TV as an example, do you feel that because of the work you have done in the past, the groundwork…Is that part of the reason that MMA is such a success today?

Ortiz: You know I think so, but I think a lot of it goes to Spike TV for educating the fans on what this sport is really about. I mean, I guess I just fall into a character that people have so much love for or so much hate. I have different aspects that people follow. I have to attribute a lot of it to Spike TV, Zuffa, but of course, the charismatic stuff I do before a fight and after a fight, well that contributes to a lot of it. It’s just one of those things; I have been in this business for 10 years. I’m still young, I’m only 31 years old and I still have a lot to learn. I have a lot more titles to win and to defend. I’m going to be in this sport for a while, I think. It’s where I thought it would be when I first started. It’s huge right now and I have to thank all of the fans who supported me and who are supporting MMA today. It’s the fastest growing sport in North America and the world today.

Max: There are several questions that I get e-mailed from time to time and I have to ask these questions or I think I may get murdered. Is the conflict between you and Ken really over now that it’s been a month gone by? Is it done?

Ortiz: Well, to me after the first fight it was done, but Ken managed to build up so much anger to hate me. The dislike was always there and when we did the Ultimate Fighter, it got a little stronger. After the first fight, I thought it would be over and then he spouted his mouth off again. I thought it was disrespectful towards me that he said he thought it shouldn’t have been stopped. It would have been a little more pain that he would have received. After the third one, I showed how it should have ended and how I wanted it to end and that’s by knockout. I did the little gravedigger thing and flipped him off after the fight was over, but I was able to collect myself. I thought and looked at it and said, “I can be the bigger man”, shake and raise his hand, and just call it quits. I did what I needed to do for those three fights and each time I was a victor and that was the most important thing in my life I think. I pushed it aside and Ken Shamrock is no more than an acquaintance to me. He’s not someone I would go to dinner with or anything, but I pretty much sealed the cap on the rivalry.

Max: Has the most talked about boxing match in MMA, happened against Dana yet?

Ortiz: No, actually the Athletic Commission had a problem with our weight difference because it was like a 15-pound weight difference. They wanted to make sure that gets squashed a little bit. I think we are going to have that happen after the Liddell fight and it’s going to be exciting.

Max: This is the number one question I get when I have a conversation about Tito Ortiz. No matter what we are talking about, Jenna’s name comes up and I am asked how you guys met towards the end of the discussion. So, how did you two meet?

Ortiz: It’s kind of funny. Jenna has actually been a pretty big fan of mine. She’s been to many of my fights and fights she was at I sometimes didn’t even know she was there. We actually met on MySpace as you may never have guessed. She added me as a friend and I added her as a friend. She came up to me after I fought Shamrock and we just talked and exchanged numbers. We became a really good couple because she’s someone I really love a whole bunch and I know she loves me the same. We’re a great couple, a power couple. We get along really, really good. She’s a smart, intelligent, and a very articulate business savvy woman who I see being in my life for a long time.

Max: Tito, let me say thanks for this interview before I ask this question. December 30th, Tito Ortiz vs. Chuck Liddell what Tito are we going to see? I know it’s sort of a cliché’ and played out question, but are we going to see a whole lot of intensity like some of the older Tito fights or are you just going to go out there and let things happen as they may?

Ortiz: Well, I really think it comes down to a good game plan and we’re doing a game plan to the T all the way from the first bell to the last bell. I think really, the intensity I bring in to the Octagon will be the same as always. It will be intense, emotional, and I am going to try to push the fight to Chuck Liddell and see if he can handle the tempo. I know he will be physically ready. It is just one of things that in my heart. I need to win this fight, no matter what. It’s not for the world title, for me it’s just beating Chuck Liddell and showing to everyone that he is human. Showing that he can lose the same and he can bleed the same. This is something I want to prove.

Max: Do you have any sponsors you would like to thank?

Ortiz: I would like to thank Punishment Athletics at http://www.punishmentathletics.com ,American Home Mortgage, AMG Custom Auto Sound and that’s pretty much it right now.

KICKIN IT 2006 "THE SEQUEL" RESULTS

IF YOU MISSED THE SEQUEL THEN YOU MISSED THE BEST KICKIN IT ALL YEAR. THE EVENT WAS PACKED AS WELL AS ACTION PACKED. EVERY BOUT COULDVE BEEN MISTAKEN FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP BOUT. FOR EVERY FIGHTER THAT NIGHT BROUGHT MAJOR GAME. THE NEW TEAM FROM WAIANAE, BETTER KNOWN AS TEAM DEVASTATION HAS ONLY BEEN ON KICKIN IT FOR ONE YEAR BUT TOOK HOME EVERY TITLE THAT THEY FOUGHT FOR.

ONE OF THE EXCITING FIGHTS CAME WHEN VETERAN KICKIN IT CHAMPION CHAD FOUGHT JUSTIN. THIS WAS A REDEMPTION FIGHT FOR CHAD BEING THAT HE LOST TO JUSTIN IN A GOT SKILLS MATCH. HE DEFINITELY REDEEMED HIMSELF BIG TIME. CHAD TOTALLY OUTCLASSED JUSTIN IN THE FIRST TWO ROUNDS. JUSTIN HURT CHAD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE THIRD ROUND WITH 3 SOLID KICKS TO CHADS BODY BUT IT WAS A LITTLE TOO LATE AND CHAD TOOK HOME HIS SECOND BELT.

THE MOST DISAPPOINTING FIGHT WAS BETWEEN HIAPO KOLO AND RICKY MURILLO. THIS WAS THE FIGHT THAT WAS SUPPOSED HAVE SOME MAJOR FIRE POWER FROM EACH SIDE. BOTH FIGHTERS WERE EVEN ON PAPER HAVING 3 - 1 RECORDS. THE FIGHT STARTED WITH HIAPO THROWING A BIG ROUNDHOUSE TO RICKYS HEAD. RICKY HALF STEPPED THE KICK AND LAUNCHED A VICIOUS STRAIGHT RIGHT TO HIAPOS STERNUM THAT LOOKED LIKE IT WAS FIRED FROM A CANNON. RICKY THEN FLEW 7 UNANSWERED PUNCHES TO HIAPOS HEAD WHILE HIAPO WAS BENT OVER TRYING TO RECOVER FROM THE BLAST. BUT RECOVERY TIME WAS NOT ON HIS SIDE WHEN HE GOT SENT TO THE CANVAS WITH A WICKED ROUNDHOUSE IN HIS FACE, COMPLIMENTS OF RICKY. ABOUT 30 SECONDS WAS ALL THAT FANS GOT FROM PROBABLY THE MOST ANTICIPATED FIGHT ALL YEAR.

WHEN EVERYONE THOUGHT THE EXCITEMENT WAS OVER, SUNSEA AND KAMAKANA STEPPED INTO THE RING FOR THE MAIN EVENT. THIS MAIN EVENT WILL BE THE FIGHT THAT PEOPLE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT FOR THE NEXT COUPLE MONTHS. THESE TWO WARRIORS WERE PRACTICALLY EQUAL IN SKILLS AND APPEARANCE. BUT IT ALL CAME DOWN TO WHO WANTED IT MORE. IN THE FIRST ROUND KANA CAUGHT SUNSEA WITH A BIG RIGHT HOOK, SUNSEA ATE THAT RIGHT HOOK AND ASKED FOR 2NDS. AND THATS EXACTLY WHAT HE GOT WHEN KANA FOLLOWED UP WITH ANOTHER RIGHT HOOK THAT MADE SUNSEA HAVE TO CATCH HIMSELF BY PUTTING HIS GLOVE TO THE GROUND FOR BALANCE. SECOND ROUND CAME AND SUNSEA MADE KANA PAY FOR ALL HIS BIG MISSES. THIRD ROUND HAD BOTH FIGHTERS RUNNING ON E. THIS ROUND WAS ALL ABOUT PRIDE OR SOME CALL IT HEART. THE DECISION WENT TO SUNSEA "THE 2006 KICKIN IT SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION".

Padilla is a flashy fan-favorite; Hilo’s Cisneros prefers to stand and throw bombs. This will be a fun one.

135lbs: Paul Gorman v Ikaika Silva
Two tough, talented grapplers meet; winner looks to move up in Icon’s smoking flyweight division.

210-lbs: Maui Wolfgram v Ben “Pele” Fonoti
Jiu-Jitsu versus football. Wolfgram is a talented grappler; grid-iron star Fonoti possesses rare athleticism.

145-lb: Vinny Delos Santos v Isaiah Cobb-Adams
Veteran kickboxer Delos Santos makes MMA debut.

195-lbs: Ron Verdadero v Ross “Kala Kolohe” Hose
Icon’s “blue collar” fight of the night. Guaranteed to be a war.

145-lb: Lorenzo Moreno v Sadhu Bott
Moreno has the potential to dominate at 145-lbs; Bott brings a muay-thai background to his MMA debut

Heavyweight Kickboxing: Jacob Cook v Chavis Victoria
Icon starts the night off with a bang as two of kickboxing’s biggest bulls stand toe-to-toe.

Who’s Next for the Champ?

Now that Georges St. Pierre has captured the UFC Welterweight title belt, its time to ask the most obvious question: “Who will be GSP’s first title defense victim?”

The way I see it, there are currently three likely candidates. The first, and my personal pick, is Diego Sanchez. “The Nightmare” is still undefeated and riding a 16-fight win streak. Sanchez will next matchup with Joe Riggs on December 13 at the next Ultimate Fight Night. Diego should be able to handle Riggs without much difficulty, and will definitely deserve a title shot.

The second possibility would be Matt Serra, winner of The Ultimate Fighter 4 welterweight crown. By winning TUF 4, Serra gets a title shot sometime in 2007 by default. When will this title shot come? I honestly don’t think Serra has any shot at beating GSP, so why put off the inevitable?

The final option would be former champ Matt Hughes. Hughes finally spoke publically today on his blog for the first time since his loss to GSP.

First off, I’d like to say that Georges fought a heck of a fight. He’s a nice guy and a well-rounded fighter and he’s going to be tough to beat.

Number two, I’d like to thank everybody for all their support and I’ve already talked to the UFC about getting a rematch sometime and they said that’s fine. I don’t know when that will be or if I will fight anyone before that, but I anxiously await a rematch with Georges because I just think I can do so much better.

So now that Hughes has confirmed he will be looking for a rematch with GSP, I guess that can put to rest the rumors that he would be retiring after his UFC contract ends. Again, I don’t think Hughes can beat GSP, so I’d like to see Hughes have one or two fights before a rematch; we don’t need to see another back-to-back schedule like we had with Andre Arlovski and Tim Sylvia.

BodogFight: Season 1 Finale

By Linda Moss, STAFF
(Multichannel News) _ The Media Group will deliver BodogFight: Season 1 Finale, a mixed-martial-arts pay-per-view event, to more than 45 million cable- and satellite-TV viewers, officials said Monday.

This international PPV event features martial-arts champions from Team USA squaring off against the Russian Red Devils.

Created by Bodog.com (www.bodog.com) Entertainment Group, the BodogFight PPV event will be distributed by TMG and broadcast live from the Agrodome in Vancouver, British Columbia, Dec. 2 at 9 p.m.

TMG secured the PPV event for distribution through EchoStar Communications' Dish Network direct-broadcast satellite service and In Demand Networks, which is carried on Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks, Charter Communications, Cox Communications and Comcast.

TMG also is also distributing the BodogFight PPV event in Canada to viewers of Bell ExpressVu, Shaw Communications and Viewers Choice.

This PPV match is a culmination of BodogFight, the action-packed mixed-martial-arts reality-TV series broadcast weekly on TMG's Men's Outdoors & Recreation channel.

Also being announced at the PPV event will be the BodogFight favorite fighter as voted by viewers, with the winning warrior taking home the $50,000 cash prize. Viewers can cast their vote by using TMG's interactive-TV features, which are available to more than 12 million Dish viewers.

In November, Dish viewers were given on-screen prompts that take the weekly BodogFight viewers to a Web-like environment on their TV. Fight fans then simply use their TV remote to enter instantly to win a martial-arts package (complete with a five-day trip to Los Angeles, martial-arts lessons and up to $10,000 in cash), to view the Fighter Gallery of photos and to vote instantly for a favorite fighter. The fighter with the most votes is awarded $50,000 during the final PPV event.

In addition to the showdown between Team USA and Russia, the PPV event also features three Superfights: Roger Gracie versus Ron Waterman in a grudge match; Antonio Silva vs. Eric Pele; and Eddie Alvarez against Aaron Riley in a welterweight-championship bout.

TMG, formerly known as Turner Media Group, provides interactive-TV advertising, direct-response programming and transactional TV networks. TMG reaches an aggregate of more than 100 million homes nationwide through Dish and major cable TV distributors such as Comcast, Time Warner, Bright House and Cox in select markets.

Post UFC 65: Monson to Retire?

After suffering a loss to UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia in last night’s UFC 65, Jeff Monson (22-6 MMA, 4-3 UFC) appears poised for a retirement from MMA. Steve Sievert of the Houston Chronicle’s Brawl Sports blog interviewed Monson this past Friday, and “The Snowman” made an impending retirement seem rather certain. Said Sievert:

His first shot at the belt, tomorrow night at UFC 65 in Sacramento against two-time champ Tim Sylvia, will likely be his last.

“I’ll probably retire in less than a year,” said Monson, who comes into the bout riding a 16-fight winning streak, including three UFC wins this year.

The calendar says he’s 33, but Monson feels older. He’s been wrestling for more than half his life, has endured recovery from two bicep tears earlier this decade and is ready to leave the training grind behind to spend more time with his kids, Joshua and Michaela.

If thoughts of retirement were already in Monson’s mind, last night’s bout with Tim Sylvia isn’t going to help matters. That unanimous-decision loss was his first since losing to Forrest Griffin in a 2002 WEFC bout, but it highlighted one of Monson’s biggest problems: his short stature. Although carrying a hugely muscular 240-pound frame, Monson stands only 5-foot-9, and he’s almost always at a reach disadvantage. And with his strengths resting almost exclusively in submissions and groundwork, standup wars will continue to present problems when he faces champion-caliber heavyweights.

Despite occassionally drawing criticism for his political views, Monson is truly one of the sport’s good guys. Highly educated (bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology), intelligent, respectful and said to be very approachable by MMA fans, Monson is one of those guys who makes you realize a book shouldn’t be judged by its tough-looking, tattoed cover.

If Monson does decide to retire, his final walk to the octagon in UFC 65 will preserve a fitting memory: a stoic Monson being cheered by his fans while John Lennon’s “Imagine” wails from the speakers.

Brazilian Notebook: Wanderlei Defends Belt in ‘07
by Gleidson Venga

Definitely, 2006 was the year when Brazil held its largest number of mixed martial arts events. Big shows such as Super Challenge, Predador FC and Fury FC showed us impeccable organization, and it proved to all that Brazilian promoters can put together amazing events.

Before the end of this year several cards will take place, including the traditional Storm Samurai, Shooto Brazil and the second Fury FC. Meanwhile, PRIDE’s athletes are training for fights on New Year’s Eve. Also, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira became the South American boxing heavyweight champion, and a new MMA team promises to make some noise.

Wanderlei Silva will only defend his belt in 2007

To those expecting Wanderlei Silva to defend his PRIDE title at the end of this year, you’ll have to wait a couple of months. According to Silva he will make a scheduled fight Dec. 31, but it will probably not come against Ricardo Arona or “Minotoro.” Instead, he will defend his title February in Las Vegas.

“I think I will know December’s opponent in the next few days because the time is running and I must to train and focus on this match,” Silva told Sherdog.com. “And to warn my opponent in the days before the fight is not going to be a very good idea. So I think the guy already knows he will face me.”

“Minotoro” conquers a boxing title

Brazilian amateur boxing champion Antonio Rogerio Nogueira just conquered another title. The fighter is the reigning champion of the South American Games, which took place last week in Argentina.

In the finals, “Minotoro” defeated his Argentine opponent by the dominating score of 22-5. Nogueira’s conquest earned space in the Brazilian press and the fighter stated that he planned to represent Brazil in the Pan-American Games in 2007 and the Olympics in 2008, that is if the dates don’t conflict with his matches in PRIDE.

Storm Samurai promises another great event

The most traditional Brazilian MMA event these days, Storm Samurai will promote its last event of 2006 next Saturday. The schedule will bring rising names such as Andre Dida, Marlon Matias and Rosimar Palhares. One of the most anticipated fights features Marisa Souza and the beast Cristiane Cyborg.

Full Card:
Cláudio “Popeye” vs. Rosimar Palhares
Maicon Costa vs. Alexandre Barros
Andre Dida vs. Felipe Borges
Wagner Tibúrcio vs. Mikito
Marcelo “Zulú” vs. Cristian Tide
Marlon Mathias vs. Carlo Prates
Gustavo vs. Ivan “Pitbull”
Ed Carlos “Monstro” vs. Sidney da Silva
Jorge Brito vs. Edval Pedroso
Cristiane Cyborg vs. Marisa Souza

Carlos Barreto and Jorge Guimarães create new MMA team

Manager Jorge Guimarães and Carlson Gracie black belt Carlos Barreto, along with physical trainer Rogério Camões, announced the birth of the newest Brazilian MMA team: Black House.

Besides Barreto, this team will feature UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, Vitor Belfort, Assuerio Silva and Lyoto Machida. They promise that the Black House will be one of the strongest MMA teams on earth.

Occupying the team’s large training facility in Rio de Janeiro, the gym features two grappling mats, one cage and one ring. The grand opening will take place Nov. 27.

CHOI WANTS USD$4 MILLION TO FIGHT

Hong-Man Choi

The Korean newspaper 'Chosen Nippo' reports that the real reason Hong-Man Choi is not participating on the K-1 2006 World GP Finals card on December 2nd is due to a breakdown in contract negotiaions with K-1.

According to Chosen Nippo, Choi wanted 500 million Yen (approximately USD$4,150,000) to participate, but K-1 would come give him higher then their offer of 350 million Yen (approximately USD$2,900,000).

Official UFC 65 Salaries: Paydays for St. Pierre, Hughes, Sylvia, Monson…

The California State Athletic Commission has released the fighters’ salary figures for this past weekend’s UFC 65.

I mentioned a TSN.ca story on Monday that quoted St. Pierre’s manager as saying his fighter got $80,000 ($40,000 to fight, $40,000 to win) for his bout with former champ Matt Hughes (who earned $75,000). However, according to the official figures, St. Pierre actually received $58,000 ($29,000 to fight and $29,000 to win).

These figures, of course, don’t include the variety of “secret” bonuses the UFC traditionally gives many of its fighters. Those bonuses are known to reach hundreds of thousands of dollars per fight for the UFC’s top fighters. The figures also don’t take into account signing bonuses, sponsorships, pay-per-view cuts/bonuses and the like.

(A few salaries are missing, but they’ll be posted shortly. They’re more than likely $5,000 or less.)

UFC 65 Salaries:

Georges St. Pierre - $58,000 ($29,000 to fight, $29,000 for win over Hughes)
Matt Hughes - $75,000 (lost to St. Pierre)

Tim Sylvia - $120,000 ($60,000 to fight, $60,000 for win over Monson)
Jeff Monson - $13,000 (lost to Sylvia)

Brandon Vera - $40,000 (win over Mir)
Frank Mir - $36,000 (lost to Vera)

Joe Stevenson - $24,000 (win over Mishima)
Dokonjonosuke Mishima - n/a (lost to Stevenson)

James Irvin - $10,000 (win over Ramirez)
Hector Ramirez - n/a (lost to Irvin)

Antoni Hardonk - $6,000 (win over Pendergarst)
Sherman Pendergarst - n/a (lost to Hardonk)

Nick Diaz - $24,000 (win over Tibau)
Gleison Tibau - n/a (lost to Tibau)

Jake O’Brien - $12,000 (win over Shockman)
Josh Shockman - n/a (lost to O’Brien)

Forget imitating pro wrestling,
MMA might see the real deal

Zach Arnold reports that the WWE is seriously considering promoting MMA events.

Vince McMahon and the WWE ought to be very wary about getting into MMA since they have failed miserably when they have tried to promote anything other than professional wrestling. Most people probably remember the WWE's failure with the XFL, but many may not recall that McMahon also bombed with a professional body building association in the early 90's. Plus, the WWE's experiment with the "Brawl for it All" (real fights with toughman style boxing and take downs) did not go over too well with wrestling fans.

However, MMA promotion is not too different than professional wrestling (definitely closer to professional wrestling than football or body building). While I would put the WWE's chances of being able to dethrone the UFC at less than than 50%, it would definitely be a force to reckon with - one that the MMA promoters could not easily ignore.

Zach goes into great detail about how this will affect Pride, but I think another interesting question is how it will affect the UFC. If the WWE gets into MMA it not only gives the UFC a new formidable competitor, it also puts the UFC in a funny position.

The UFC has been spending its time and energy promoting itself like a professional wrestling promotion without pre-determiined outcomes (anyone know how the Dana White vs. Tito Ortiz boxing match went?), but its natural spin would be that the WWE is a pro-wrstling promotion trying to put on "phony" shows without pre-determined outcomes. You have wonder whether the UFC would counter the WWE by increasing its theatrics, or by treating MMA more like a serious sport.

In any event, regardless whether the WWE entering MMA would be good for the sport (it would not be in my opinion), this is certainly an interesting development.

BTT, NU & Gracie Barra together

After receiving an invitation by the organization, the Brazilian Top Team just confirmed that will be at the team match at the Brazilian Championship Cyclone of Submission. So, there are already three teams confirmed in the event that will be held on December 3rd, at Gymnasium of Iate Club Jardim Guanabara, in Ilha do Governador, Rio de Janeiro. Beyond BTT, Nova União and Gracie Barra will also send their representatives for the categories until 70kg, until 80kg and under 80kg. That will be the first time that a team match of Submission will be held in Brazil.

- We are really happy about the receptive of the new Idea of a team match at Cyclone Championship. Every year we try to make something new and this year it can't be different. I want to say thank you to the big number of teams that wants to participate and apologize about not having invited everyone for this first event. We are taking care of the number of teams and we must be criterions at this first selection - explains the promoter Mário Miglioli, making mystery about the other teams.

At this year, the traditional Brazilian Championship Cyclone of Submission will be held for the first time at the Iate Club Jardim Guanabara, in Ilha do Governador, and will also bring a team match and money prizes.

It was a night of entertaining fights as promoter Brennan Kamaka does another good job of match making. There were many very competitive fights, but the fight that brought everyone to their feet was the semi main event of the Hit Man, Harris Sarmiento of the 808 Fight Factory fighting a very tough and young John Visante Jr. Vistante was doing his standard stick and move and smiling when he was hit as well as talking a lot of trash during the match. Sarmiento stalked Vistante and hit him with some vicious shots. Visante answered with shot of his own, but the experienced Sarmiento once again proved that he is one of the top 160 lb kickboxers in Hawaii. In the main event, Dain Agbayani dusted off the gloves against a very active Kaleo Kwan, arguably the best kickboxer in Hawaii at 160 lbs. Both fighters traded blows back and forth. Kaleo peppered Dain with a good mix of punches and kicks, along with some devestating body shots. Dain answered with some solid leg kicks and a few combinations. During an exchanged it looked like Kaleo caught Dain and he fell through the ropes, but later Dain told me that when he got hit, his already injured ankle gave out which sent him to the canvas.

All fights were 3 x 2 min rounds

ISHII SENT TO PRISON

The Japanese media reports that K-1 boss Kazuyoshi Ishii was handed a prison sentence of one year and 10 months for tax evasion.

The trial had been ongoing since Ishii was arrested in 2002 and finally came to a close after numerous appeals by Ishii's defense team.

Monday Morning Reverie: The Nice Guy Finished First
by Mike Sloan

I remember the days of yore when bad things would happen to me or those close to me and there was always some optimist spewing the nonsensical cliché: “good things come to those who wait.”

Rather than trying to figure out a formula to solve a problem or at least give sound advice to someone in an adverse situation, the clown would just spout those words, expecting everything to work out automatically.

I, for one, never bought into that theory about good things happening to good people with patience. I always used the ideology to “suck it up, figure things out and get on with your life.”

Forget waiting around like some jerk without a purpose. Everyday of my life, basically, I scoffed at that tired and useless cliché, disregarding it merely as some sort of positive-thinking farce — an easy escape hatch away from actually helping someone stuck in a rut.

That was until Saturday night.

Georges St. Pierre is hands down the friendliest, most honest and warm-hearted man in the sport of mixed martial arts. Aside from when he’s inside the realm of battle, I don’t think Georges has a bad bone in his body. He’s always smiling, is a social butterfly and a personable bloke who truly adores his fans and fellow fighters.

MMA is filled with respected and respectful fighters, but St. Pierre shows so much respect he borders on being too much of a fan of his compatriots.

In a nutshell, the 25-year-old St. Pierre is that rare breed of human being these days: a genuinely nice guy. And this past Saturday, he certainly finished first.

While Matt Hughes isn’t exactly a bad guy and I personally have nothing against him whatsoever, it sure was fun to watch his arrogance bludgeoned. The smug cockiness that has engrossed his attitude lately — the one that made him out to be a pompous ass on season four of The Ultimate Fighter — was smeared all across the canvas of the Octagon.

That plus the fact that St. Pierre is such a good-hearted guy who wanted nothing more in life than to get another crack at Hughes, brought a broad smile to my ugly mug.

It was all worth it.

Naturally, many of you will drop all sorts of moronic e-mails in my inbox saying I’m a Hughes hater. That couldn’t be further from the truth. I have always given Hughes the respect and credit that he has commanded over the years, and he is clearly one of the greatest fighters in the history of the sport. But watching his head slowly swell began to eat at me and many others. Evidence of his arrogance was on display throughout the fight, as he defiantly tried to bang with St. Pierre the entire time.

I understand that Hughes has worked tirelessly with a boxing coach and he felt that his striking ability had grown leaps and bounds recently, but since when did the farmer suddenly become Anderson Silva?

Hughes had a terrible strategy coming into the fight and it cost him his welterweight title. After being lit up like a Christmas tree for the first three or so minutes of the battle, the now-former champion tried only once for a takedown, when everybody knows his bread and butter is grappling on the floor.

If Hughes was ripping into St. Pierre on his feet, then I’d understand and support his decision to mime “Cro Cop.” But my question is — and this is so easy coming from my office chair — at what point did Hughes think to himself, OK, this isn’t working. Let me go back to what got me here.

The answer, after watching the fight numerous times, was never.

Granted, I can’t speak for Hughes. Maybe he tried to instill his ground-and-pound skill set but was thwarted. However, from the outside looking in, it appeared like Hughes’ ego got the best of him, and St. Pierre, being the ultimate fighter he is (pun heavily intended), took full advantage, seized the opportunity and worked the Illinois native like a Malaysian sweat shop employee.

A bad night?

Naturally every fighter, even the elite of the elite, are entitled a bad night at the office. Hughes was trounced for just over six minutes and he looked like a complete amateur. He may have been injured coming in. He may have been over confident. Or he may have just had a bad night coupled with a perfect fight from his foe.

I am willing to bet my next two Sherdog paychecks (about $11) that hordes of people will leap off the Hughes’ bandwagon and if they do, they deserve to tumble painfully to their deaths down the side of a treacherous and rocky cliff.

When the St. Pierre and Hughes meet again (yes, they will meet for a third time within a year), I can rest assured that the bout will be more competitive. Unlike B.J. Penn, Hughes cares about his legacy and doesn’t slack in the gym. A rubber match is a lock, and though I am not yet predicting a reversal of fortunes, the fight itself will not mirror what happened in Sacramento on Saturday night.

Another bad night

UFC 65 as a whole was a good view. It was certainly better than the past several UFC pay-per-view events, despite the inclusion of a horrendous title fight between heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia and challenger Jeff Monson.

I hit the nail right on the head in my debate with a bitter Greg Savage when I wrote the fight would end up exactly how it did.

“I honestly couldn’t care less about this fight,” I wrote in the debate. “What is there to look forward too? Sylvia by horrendously boring unanimous decision. Wake me when it’s over.”

Not to toot my own horn or anything, but could I have made a more accurate prediction?

Sylvia’s a good guy and an excellent fighter. His stand-up is well-rounded and he’s hard to take down (just like former champ Ricco Rodriguez). But it’s gotten to the point where I can’t stomach sitting through another dreadful fight with this guy.

Sylvia’s tussles with Assuerio Silva, Andrei Arlovski in their third bout and now Monson are collectively the dullest 65 minutes of MMA “action” anybody can imagine. Seriously: if you take seven tweakers who just blew two lines of meth and forced them to watch those three fights, they’d either fall right asleep or perish from boredom.

Ken Shamrock’s rematch with Dan Severn was hands down the worst contest in the history of the fight game, including every Larry Donald, Ed Mahone and Vaughn Bean fight combined in the sport of boxing. No contest will ever top the Shamrock-Severn II staring-contest as the worst fight ever, but it sure seems as though Sylvia and his opponents are trying their damnedest to achieve that unfathomable feat.

Don’t think I am beating up on Tim by himself. His opponents are probably more to blame than the champ for the doldrums we have suffered through since his foes know full well not to get cracked with that crippling right hand of his. They are too timid to engage with the sleepy giant and instead move around the cage trying to figure out a way to take him off his feet.

Eh, I’ll just blame Dana White for that … that’s usually the safe route.

Quite frankly, Mir is done

Yes, Frank Mir, pack it in. Your immense talent has gone the way of the dinosaurs. Unless Hiram Bingham can somehow excavate the wasted talent the former UFC heavyweight champion used to exhibit, the Vegas kid should consider changing careers.

The last time Mir looked like an absolute world beater — a young gun many tabbed as possibly the first truly perfect heavyweight — was against Pete Williams in March of 2002, almost 30 UFC pay-per-view events ago.

After watching the gifted former champ corrode into what he is today, he should learn this simple catchphrase: “Would you like fries with that?”

Misc. debris

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try and try again. That is what can be said about Joe Stevenson’s guillotine submission win over Dokonjonosuke Mishima. Stevenson has a ton of potential, naturally, but after getting stuck in a guillotine three times within two minutes, at what point did Mishima ever think about changing positions? Apparently he didn’t until he was tapping. …

The war between Alessio Sakara and Andrew McFedries was hands down the fight of the night. It was the best fight in the UFC in a very long time, eclipsing the overrated war between Scott Smith and Pete Sell from last week. The only drawback was the way in which Sakara got taken out. Did he get injured? Run of out of gas? I am still baffled as to why he just dropped to the canvas and allowed his opponent to batter him. Oh well, let’s hope they do it again. …

James Irvin may not be the best fighter in the world. He’s not even close. But almost no other fighter in the sport today is as exciting as him when it comes to finishes. If the UFC was smart, they’d wrap him up in a juicy contract and keep feeding him B level guys who come to bang, not grapple. There is no telling how popular this guy can become. …

Who actually wants to see Chuck Liddell fight Tito Ortiz again? I, for one, absolutely do and apparently so do several thousand others. From what I’ve heard the huge December 30 UFC event is almost sold-out.

Is it time for Brandon (The Truth) Vera in UFC heavyweight division?
Canadian Press: NEIL DAVIDSON

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CP) - Brandon (The Truth) Vera remembers the day when he had to get rid of his beloved Camaro because of a lingering arm injury that left him unable to drive the manual muscle car.

Some six years later, Vera is 7-0 as a mixed martial arts fighter and 3-0 in the UFC. His arm is working just fine and he's using it to beat anyone who steps in the ring with him. The 29-year-old heavyweight has a new wife, a new house and three cars in its garage, including a shiny Z28 Camaro.

On Saturday night, the rising star faces his toughest test to date in former heavyweight champion Frank Mir at UFC 65: Bad Intentions (available on pay-per-view). The winner is expected to move to the head of the heavyweight contenders line.

It's miles away from the time when a damaged nerve led to muscle atrophy in his arm so bad that Vera couldn't put a cap back on a soft drink bottle.

"I was handicapped," he said in an interview Friday.

The problem stemmed from a 1999 wrestling injury when Vera shredded the ligaments in his elbow. Nerve damage ensued, making for more than a year of hell.

The damage was so bad that he had to say goodbye to his 1986 Z28 five-speed Camaro, because he couldn't drive stick any more.

"Man, that car was my pride and joy. She even had a name (Asia)," said Vera, listing off all the improvements and money he had poured into the car. "I had to get rid of her."

He thought his athletic career was over. But eventually the nerves started returning to normal.

Now Vera is on the cusp of something very good in his sport.

Mir stands in his way, and there's plenty on the line for the former champion who has looked sluggish in his two fights since recovering from a serious motorcycle accident.

UFC president Dana White has not been happy with Mir's showing (one win and one loss) in his comeback.

"I've been purposely smashing Mir in the media and he's reading it and I know it's pissing him off," White said. "I'm hoping it's going to light a fire under his ass and he's going to take it serious and start training. If he didn't, Brandon Vera is going to expose him."

Vera has followed Mir's career closely and knows that the former champion is under pressure to perform.

"I expect to see a really well-rounded, in-shape Frank Mir to show up (Saturday)," he said.

And it was a buff Mir who showed up at Friday's weigh in, tipping the scales at 254 pounds. Mir has been a force in the past with a 9-2 record that includes a win over Tim Sylvia in which he snapped the big man's arm.

Vera, at 6-2 and 230 pounds with a megawatt smile and a personality just as bright, is now the heavyweight golden boy. With a Filipino father and Italian mother, the Virginia-born Vera is already a star in the Philippines.

He just came back from there and has already appeared in a host of magazines there.

"I win this fight and I get to go meet the president of the Philippines," he said.

An unbeaten record has helped win such attention.

Such records are not that common in the world of mixed martial arts but Vera feels no pressure from his. He has lost in the world of Muay Thai and still remembers losing his unbeaten record as a high school wrestler when he got a little big for his britches and underestimated an opponent in Grade 11.

"Early on I've learned a lesson that records don't mean much. It's the fight in the person and how hard you really want to go."

Vera continued his Greco-Roman wrestling when he joined the air force after school and was good enough that he was invited to join other elite athletes at the U.S. Olympic training centre in Colorado Springs.

Looking back, he wishes he would have done more to augment that training - "I was there on rawness," he said. It all became moot, however, when his elbow injury prevented him from competing in the Olympic trials for the 2000 Games.

After being laid off from a good job as a telecommunications installer, he pondered his next move. He saved some money from a successful stint as a personal trainer then quit his job, moved home and trained full time, expanding his repertoire of martial arts

"Not hard training the way I do now, but a lot of technique and learning training. I had so much to learn so I was playing catchup to everybody else."

He says he is still learning.

"MMA, it's like Brazilian jiu-jitsu. It's a never-ending sport. You;'re going to be learning for ever."

Now based in San Diego, Vera is part-owner of City Boxing gym. Newly married, his wife Kerry is a pro boxer.

IFL Announces Rosters for World Team Championship Final 12/29

The International Fight League (IFL), the world’s first team-based professional mixed martial arts league, today announced the rosters for the 2006 IFL World Team Championship final, to be held at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, on Friday, December 29, at 7 p.m. The team matchup between the Silverbacks, coached by Pat Miletich and based in Quad Cities, Iowa/Ill., and the Wolfpack, coached by Matt Lindland and based in Portland, Ore., yields five outstanding bouts. Renzo Gracie (Holmdel, N.J.) and Carlos Newton (Newmarket, Ontario) will square off in a Superfight matching two MMA legends and the coaches of the New York and Toronto teams, respectively. And four other bouts will feature members of IFL teams which did not advance to the finals, for a total of 10 fights on the card.

Tickets for the IFL World Team Championship Final at Mohegan Sun are on sale now and are available through the Mohegan Sun Box Office and Ticketmaster. Customers may log onto www.ticketmaster.com, call any Ticketmaster phone number, or visit any Ticketmaster outlet.

The pairing of the Silverbacks and Wolfpack, who advanced to the final with respective semifinal victories in Portland on Nov. 2, brings together many of the league’s top athletes in intriguing matchups. The lightweight bout pits the Silverbacks’ Bart Palaszewski (Wonderlake, Ill.) against Ryan Schultz (Eagle Creek, Ore.). Sluggers Rory Markham (Chicago) and Chris Wilson (Portland, Ore.) go at it at 170 lbs. Ryan McGivern (Bettendorf, Iowa) takes on Matt Horwich (Gresham, Ore.) in the middleweight division. Mike Ciesnolevicz (Williamstown, Pa.) tangles with Aaron Stark (Portland, Ore.) at light heavyweight, while Ben Rothwell (Kenosha, Wis.) and Devin Cole (Medford, Ore.) battle in the heavyweight bout.

In addition to the Gracie-Newton Superfight, four intraleague Superfights involving IFL athletes supplement the card. Erik Owings (New York), who has fought for the Pitbulls, takes on Ed West (Tucson, Ariz.), a member of the Sabres this past year, in a 155-lb. bout. In a pair of light heavyweight fights, Brent Beauparlant (Montreal, Quebec) of the Dragons challenges Alex Schoenauer (Las Vegas) of the Anacondas, while the Pitbulls’ Jamal Patterson (Hoboken, N.J.) battles the Tiger Sharks’ Reese Andy (Billings, Mont.). Krzysztof Soszynski (Winnipeg, Manitoba) of the Anacondas and Mike Whitehead (Central Point, Ore.), who defeated Mark Kerr in an IFL Superfight in Portland on Nov. 2, clash in a heavyweight matchup.

"The Silverbacks and Wolfpack both proved they belong in the finals after their exciting victories in Portland," IFL co-founder and Commissioner Kurt Otto said. "By combining those interesting matchups with the Newton-Gracie Superfight and a series of intraleague Superfights showcasing some of our best athletes, we have a card that fans will really enjoy seeing."

The main Superfight will be the second contest between Newton and Gracie. Newton claimed a split decision on Oct. 5, 2003, in Saitama, Japan. It will be the first career matchup for competitors in each of other 10 bouts on the card.

Icon Sport: Unstoppable Card Changes:
47-5 Pro Boxer’s MMA Debut; Lawler Injures Hand.

November 22, 2006 Honolulu, HI. Icon Sport will present the MMA debut or Jeremy “Half Man, Half Amazing” Williams, a professional heavyweight boxer (47-5, 35 KOs), in the Friday December 1st event, Unstoppable. Williams is a “who’s who” in the boxing world, with the fastest recorded knockout in California boxing history (10 seconds, vs. Arthur Weathers) and an induction into Golden Gloves Hall of Fame. But fans may recognize Williams more from his reoccurring appearances in the hit reality boxing program, The Contender, where he serves as a trainer to the contestants.

In his MMA debut, Williams will represent Randy Couture and Bas Rutten’s Legends Mixed Martial Arts Center, a ground-breaking MMA facility in Hollywood, California. Williams comes to Icon Sport as a replacement for Falaniko Vitale, who is suffering a persistent knee injury sustained during his football career. Williams will face undefeated Jamiah Williamson, son of the former WBC light heavyweight world champion. Williamson comes to Icon from the Orange County Bomb Squad team in Anaheim, California.

T. Jay Thompson, Icon Sport President, on boxer Jeremy Williams’ MMA debut in Icon:
“The fans are in for a treat now that Jeremy is joining Icon. If you like fighters who stand and bang, then you’re going to love this guy. He’s one of the biggest punchers in boxing…he’s going to be very, very exciting in MMA. He’ll be tough to stop with the ground training he’s receiving at Couture and Rutten’s Hollywood gym.”

But as one star joins the Unstoppable card, another is forced to step away. “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler has once again injured the same hand which he fractured in early 2006. Lawler will return to compete in the next Icon show in February, 2007.

A Night of Submissions at Ironheart Crown XI: Apocalypse
Report by Dustin Lee DePue

The Ironheart Crown is promoted by local boy and one of our best friends, Eric Moon.

Hammond, IN -- A pillar of Midwest MMA, the Ironheart Crown held its eleventh show Saturday night at the Hammond Civic Center. An estimated one-thousand fight fans gathered for the thirteen-fight, Shooto-sanctioned card. As always, the IHC brought in a combination of local and out of state talent to insure a solid night of competitive action. Indeed, it was exactly that, with several close decisions and eight of thirteen fights ending by way of submission.

In the main event, Jani Lax edged out John Mahlow in a close match at 154 pounds. Although both fighters were willing to throw leather from all positions, Lax was able to score more consistently in the stand-up exchanges and cause more damage on the ground. He displayed excellent takedown defense as he was able to stifle many attempts by Mahlow throughout the fight. By the third round, Lax had taken over and was on his way to certain victory when Mahlow scored points in the final seconds with an ankle lock attempt that was thwarted by the final bell. While it saved him the round, in the end, Mahler's submission attempt wasn't enough as Jani Lax ring won by split decision.

Undefeated lightweight Micah Miller was able to increase his record to 11-0. Miller's original opponent, Joao Herdy, pulled out due to an illness. Josh Lee stepped into the empty slot and came right at Miller, taking him down in the opening moments of the fight. Miller, for his part, appeared unfazed. Fighting out of the Hardcore Gym, which also produced TUF season one winner Forrest Griffin, Miller immediately went to work on Lee's arm, transitioning from an armbar to a triangle choke and finishing Lee just inside a minute and a half. A fight with original opponent Joao Herdy was announced after Miller's win.

Kyle Watson's superior strength helped him smother opponent Dan Spychalski's ground game in their bout at 154 pounds. Spychalski used effective knees from the clinch early but a slip put him on the mat where Watson was eventually able to take his back. Surviving the first round, Spychalski found himself in the same position early in round two as Watson took his back again. This time, however, Watson was able to sink in the rear-naked choke forcing Spychalski to tap.

In the sole Heavyweight fight of the evening, Don Richard battled with Allan Weickert, throwing several submissions at him for a round and a half before finally catching him midway through the second. After big right hand dropped Weickert, Richard followed him to the ground where he secured side control and finished Weickert with a Kimura.

Luke Tesch looked impressive in his debut against Wyatt Hickey. Tesch's strength advantage was clear early on as he mauled Hickey, working him over with knees from the clinch before taking him down. Hickey was game but ultimately, Tesch's aggressive yet technical attack was too much. Hickey's reversal from the bottom gave Tesch a chance to slap on a fight-ending guillotine choke.

Full Results:

Cesar Gracie Leaves TWF

I have officialy resigned from The World Fighter organization and have now no affiliation whatsoever with the show.
I was initially approached by the show's president, Jason Aiello, when he requested that some of my fighters fight on the show. After hearing about the proposed sums of money to be payed to the fighters, I was cautiously optimistic. My fighters were payed large signing bonuses and I was eventually contracted to work as a consultant and matchmaker for the organization. All of our checks cleared, leading me to believe that the show was a legitimate entity.

In the last couple of weeks there have been statements coming from the organization that I knew were inconsistant and erroneous. The website, theworldfighter.com is claiming to have a Renzo Gracie vs. Frank Shamrock fight signed for January at the Boardwalk Hall in New Jersey. This fight will not be happening and there is no show set for New Jersey. As far as I know there is not sufficient funding for any future show and my attempts to get financial disclosures were unsuccessful.
I realize that there are fighters that could possibly be turning down legitimate offers while they wait to fight on a show that will not be happening and I refuse to allow my name to be associated with an organization that continues to play a game of smoke and mirrors." -Cesar Gracie

Matt Hughes Discusses UFC 65 Loss

Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes (40-5 MMA, 14-3 UFC), who lost his belt to George St. Pierre this past weekend at UFC 65, is back home in Illinois and recently updated his blog.

Although he’s often criticized for being cocky and arrogant, Hughes came across respectful and complimentary of St. Pierre.

Oh — and God got his usual shout-out.

From Matt-Hughes.com:

Tuesday, November 21, 2006

First off, I’d like to say that Georges fought a heck of a fight. He’s a nice guy and a well-rounded fighter and he’s going to be tough to beat.

Number two, I’d like to thank everybody for all their support and I’ve already talked to the UFC about getting a rematch sometime and they said that’s fine. I don’t know when that will be or if I will fight anyone before that, but I anxiously await a rematch with Georges because I just think I can do so much better.

Going into the fight I felt very confident. Even up to the point where I lost, I really felt God was going to have me win that fight, but it wasn’t His plan. I always pray that God’s will is done before a fight and, as long as that’s done, I’m happy and I’ll definitely fight again. Even with a loss, I can’t be anything but thankful for all that God has done in my life.

For those who might be worried about me, I’m fine. I’ve got some color to my face - a black eye and a few scabs and bruises; but this is not one of those things where I have to go out and ‘redeem myself’ so I can look myself in the mirror. I just got beat by a guy who was better than me that night and I can live with that. So, physically and mentally, I’m fine. -Matt

“While we do have some athletes in mind, we felt that there is a great interest in the sport and this would be a good opportunity to both show people what great athletic talent someone needs to compete in the IFL and to give some of that unknown talent a chance to shine,” Shamrock said. “We will screen all of the applicants prior to the tryout and see if we can identify some of the new faces that will help mold the face of this rising sport. Holding the tryout in both a state and a city that is very passionate about MMA, and where we will be training as Reno’s first professional sports team, will be an added plus.”

“One of the greatest things about the sport of Mixed Martial Arts today is that we are all finding that the pool of very elite talent and athleticism is deeper than we all may have thought,” said IFL Co-founder and Commissioner Kurt Otto. “Having one of the world’s greatest competitors in Ken Shamrock give some of this talent an opportunity to succeed is very rare in professional sports, and it will be a treat to see which, if any, of these young hopefuls will stand up to the test.”

The tryout will be limited based on space and time, and it will be open to the public for viewing. For further details, contact Jerry Milani at 212/356-4009.

BJJ Worlds' History

GRACIEMAG.com features, especially for its readers, the complete history of the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, from its beginning in 1996 all the way to present day. Divided into several parts, it will give the reader the opportunity to remember great moments, amazing fighters and also have a better view of the development of the sport over the last 10 years. Enjoy.

1996

Making history
The tale of the first-ever black-belt Jiu-Jitsu world champions

The warm-up area has a few athletes in it. On the mat, Ricardo Liborio gives his opponent, Remco Pardoel, the evil eye, who gives it right back. Short and stocky, the one considered, at the time, by master Carlson Gracie to be his best fighter looked even smaller with his knees bent. The posture helped avoid the Dutchman's takedowns. Tijuca Tenis Clube is hot during the summer in Rio. Close to four thousand people on the bleachers stand in applause as“Liba” wraps his legs around his opponent’s waist and moves them all the way up till he traps Pardoel’s left arm. It’s another Brazilian victory. One more.

The first World Jiu-Jitsu Championship was held on the first weekend of February 1996, in Rio. Fighters from nine countries were present: Brazil, USA, France, Japan, Holland, Switzerland, UAE, Italy and Cuba. The struggle to bring the foreign fighters was greater than Liborio’s struggle described above. After all, besides Brazil and the USA, Jiu-Jitsu was taking its first steps around the world. Informational access was very difficult, since the Internet was still developing as a publicity tool. Still, a bunch of fighters came and some even managed to obtain good results (mainly in the blue-belt category). From Brazil, the best were enrolled – just as in the years that followed.

It’s Sunday, February 3rd, black-belt day. The ambiance is very different from today. There are few fights on the way to the title and a lot of respect and silence in the stands. Helio Moreira, aka Sonequinha, opens the afternoon against Otavio Couto, aka Ratinho. Soneca’s victory takes place in a very tight fight with an unusual attack to the back that makes the crowd cheer for the first time. Soneca's head rests on the ground, as he hangs by Ratinho’s collar, and moves just like a compass would draw a curve around his opponent from one side to the other. He would later name the move “around the world.”

As the world keeps spinning, other black-belts qualify for the finals. Royler Gracie beats Marcus Aurelio with authority in revenge for the last Brazilian championship. Before the final against Vinicius Draculino, Royler overcomes Joao Roque in another great fight. Jamelao, in the middleweight, sends a JJ legend home: Sergio Penha, who had returned to competition nearly 15 years after a memorable fight against Rickson Gracie in a Rio State championship. Some brackets were interrupted before important battles happened. This was because at two in the afternoon it would start airing live on TV.

Live History
Right at the beginning of the broadcasting, Wallid Ismail shows up at the fighting area. He is the most famous JJ fighter to not carry the Gracie name. His opponent in the semifinal of the light-heavyweight category is Roberto Magalhães, aka Roleta, who received the black belt only four days before the competition. “If I lose it I’ll cut my hand off,” promises the man from Amazonas. Maybe Wallid was prepared for JJ fighters, but not for “weird-jitsu” fighters. Even so, for more than nine minutes, it looked like Ismail had no chance of failing. But, seconds from the end, Roleta’s strange leverage finally works and he takes Wallid’s back, earning him the four points to put him among the best in the world.

Murillo Bustamante vs. Fabio Gurgel. It’s strange that two of the greatest heavyweight black-belts of the last decade had fought only once before that final. In fact, the frequency of clashes was considerably less than it is today. Gurgel, who was defeated in 1993, takes his chance and, with a takedown and a pass of the guard, wins the final 5-0.

In another payback for1993, Ricardo Liborio goes after the only guy to have ever defeated him, back when both were brown-belts – Leonardo Castelo Branco. The motivation is great and the reward is won. One takedown, one near mount and the victory for Carlson’s fighter.

Soneca is the super-featherweight champion after beating Wellington Megaton; Royler conquers the featherweight by defeating Draculino; and Roberto Gordo gets the middleweight gold against Jamelao. In the super-heavyweight, Ze Mario Sperry takes the gold without fighting due to a shoulder injury suffered by Roberto Traven. Paulo Barroso got the lightweight title in the final against teammate Renato Barreto. Barreto had gotten to the final after not fighting Saulo Ribeiro, who later would become the fighter with more world championships in different years at black belt (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002).

Amaury absolute
After his victory over Wallid, Roleta still had one more thing to do in order to complete his mission. He would face Luis Bebeo in the final for the light-heavyweight gold. He says: “It was a great to celebrate beating Ismail but what I really wanted was to conquer the title, to be recognized by it and not only by that one win. So, I didn’t allow myself to get influenced by the crowd. I went back to the stands and focused. I had to get ready for yet another very tough fight against Bebeo, another highly recognized fighter at the time. Nevertheless, I think he got scared and I eventually got him in a triangle choke.”

That was the pace of that day – not counting the inaccuracy caused by time – until Liborio stepped on the mat to beat Pardoel for the open-class category. The result qualified Liborio to face Amaury Bitetti, who had just beat Fabio Gurgel in the semifinals.
The registry of the fight is vague. Bitetti gets the title with a good base and always fighting from above. The fight has little action but it does not matter. Bitetti is the first black-belt absolute world champion.

In the back, Bebeo celebrates in the back his advance to the light-heavyweight final while Ricardo Americano argues with the referee.

1997

Bitetti and Royler...
… sail easy in a worlds’ marked by transition, WOs and a world-class blooper

The referee raises Bitetti’s arm. Master Osvaldo Alves shoots over to embrace the two-time open-weight champion who, with his turned away from the scene, kneels to give thanks for the title right at the moment Osvaldo is flying over him and landing hard on the mat. It is likely no one filmed or photographed the most memorable scene of the 1997 Worlds’. There was laughter in the crowd even though the stands were not as packed as on the night of July 27th, when Amaury Bitetti and Fabio Gurgel decided the open-weight title.

The fight was better than the one the year before. The outcome was the same: victory for Bitetti. He stayed on top and tried to pass Gurgel’s guard. Bitetti won not by points but by referee decision. The score changed in the semifinal that put the two great names of the championship face to face – Bitetti and Royler Gracie. In this clash, Royler looked to fight on top but was soon surprised by a takedown that cost him the two points that took away his chance of getting to the final. Bitetti chose not to fight in his weight category and was helped by Nino Shembri’s forfeiting. Nino left the venue and the open-weight dispute after his defeat to Saulo Ribeiro in the middleweight final. So, while Amaury had fought once, Royler had to defeat six guys to get to the absolute semifinals – including his featherweight division.

He submitted Luis Amigo and Otavio Ratinho; defeated Alexandre Soca by points and, in the best fight of the entire black-belt category, got the gold against Vitor Shaolin. Among the heavier fighters, Royler beat Arthur Ignarra and Leo Dalla before stopping at Amaury.

Forfeits were a common thing in the main category that year. Some athletes, after fighting in their weight categories, would lose the drive to keep fighting. Three years later, the IBJJF would move the open-weight dispute to Saturday, solving the problem. But it didn’t solve the issue of Ze Mario Sperry, who saved Fabio Gurgel from fighting in the semifinal. He had beaten Saulo and then Roberto Gordo. Against Gordo, Sperry came the closest to a defeat in his sporting career up until that moment. Exhausted, Sperry dropped out of the bracket after the fight against Gordo.

At least two main characters in the black belt division that year did not appear in the open-weight dispute. Marcio Feitosa and Leonardo Vieira, finalists in the lightweight category. In the years to come, Vitor Shaolin joined them and the three offered the crowd classic fights in the division. In ’97, Feitosa came out victorious.

A big name in ’96, Roberto Roleta once again branded his name on the competition when he conquered the light-heavyweight division along with Roberto Gordo.

Interview – Ricardo Liborio

Liborio: “After that Worlds’ we saw that Jiu-Jitsu was sellable and could go on TV”

In the first and only Worlds’ where the most technical fighters for each belt was elected, Ricardo Liborio was almost the unanimous choice among black-belts. What does that title mean to you?

I was part of a generation that made history. Among other factors, because it was one of the first. So I consider that title to be very special and I am very proud of it, even today. It was important not only because the first Worlds’ was the first big championship ever organized. And it ended up being the only title of most technical fighter. After us, no one else was elected.

What do you think made the biggest impression in the jury?

For sure it was the fact that I submitted five of my six opponents that day, if I’m not mistaken. The only one I could not submit was Leo Castello Branco, in the open-class semifinal. And also the fact that the submissions occurred against much heavier guys like judoka Marcelo Figueiredo and Dutchman Remco Pardoel, in an armbar. That made the difference.

What was the most memorable moment for you in that Worlds’?

I was a skinny guy fighting in a much heavier category. I enrolled in it because I wanted to fight Leo Castello Branco. That was my mission in that Worlds’. He was the only guy to beat me back in 1993 so I had to fight him again. I knew I could beat him so I worked really hard and defeated him. It was a takedown or a sweep, I don’t remember exactly. That was indeed the most memorable moment for me. Nowadays, I consider Leo one of the nicest guys and he is one of the guys I respect the most. We’ve become great friends.

Even though you were the most technical, you didn’t walk out with the open-weight title because you gave it away in favor of your teammate Amaury Bitetti. Do you consider yourself champion as well?

What happened was that I had already won my weight division so when I beat Castello Branco in the semifinals it was decided that the title would be Amaury’s. It wouldn’t make sense to win both and in no way I consider myself open-class champion. That title is Amaury’s. That would be taking away his merit.

After that Worlds’, you never fought again. Why was that?

I already had other things in sight for my life. I was working as a desk manager in the Bank of Brazil and that job took a lot of my time. I couldn’t make time to train properly.

What has changed since the first Worlds’?

There weren’t many championships when we started. It was a time where you had guys like Bustamante, Royler and Gurgel and there was only one championship a year. It was called “Armazem do Esporte.” Nowadays the frequency of competitions is amazing. The first Worlds’ was a huge thing, with live TV coverage and all. It was then that we realized that Jiu-Jitsu had potential to grow and to spread around the globe. We saw that there were conditions for it to be a highly organized sport that could be televised with no problem. It attracted sponsors and was very sellable.

Interview - Wallid Ismail

Wallid: “Back then, whoever lost was through”

The most memorable fight of the 1996 Worlds’ was your defeat to Roberto Roleta. How do you see it now?

That Worlds’ was crazy. I always had that psycho mentality – win, win, win. But, with 20 seconds left on the clock, I lost. I remember the newspapers the day after: “Wallid’s undefeated streak is over.” Before that I had never lost as a black-belt. So, I remember it as though it were today. I lifted my head and went to receive my little 3rd-place trophy.

How was your trajectory in the championship on the way to that sweep?

First I beat a guy from Sao Paulo. Then it was him already. We had only five black belts fighting for the title. It was the rivalry that really motivated me. The crowd was singing and I was winning with only 20s to go. But he got that sweep and went for my back. So I said, congratulations to him. Everybody saw the kind of value I gave to the sport. I was never a talented guy but hardly anybody trained as hard as I did.

What would you do differently in that fight?

It’s easy to talk now. If I had gotten up the fight would have ended because I had the advantage of a half-guard. But it’s easy to talk now. I really hope he got the most from that victory. That’s what I used to do with all my victories. I would take all the profits from each one of them.

Why was the ’96 Worlds’ your last gi competition?

After that, I started with MMA and so I no longer had time for all that training with no money at the end of the day. Nevertheless I fought for the last time in gi against Royce in Copacabana.

What has changed in the Worlds’ since then?

Back in my days, if you lost a fight that was it for you. You were over. Nowadays, the guy loses or wins and it’s all the same. No one celebrated their victories more than I did. But, on the other hand, no one was more teased than me when I was defeated.
