WWW.Cabspates.com presents:
"Rhythm is the Cure"
Italian Percussion and Trance Dance

by Allesandra Belloni

with

Special Guests

Moussa Bangoura and Reggae Mcgowen

April.29, 2006

Red Elephant 1144 Bethel St. China town park at Marks.

A concert of drum music and dance of southern Italian,African, and Brazilian folk cultures, with influences from Asia,North Africa and India.

This night will feature haunting melodies and trance rythms of southern Italy, mainly connected to the rituals in honor of the black madonna and the ancient roots trance dance of purification known as tarantella.

Brazilian offerings include condombe,maracatu,samba.

These traditions have deeper origins in africa and will become magically
reconnected as Moussa Bangora and Reggae Mcgowen compliment Allesandra
with the ancient west african Instruments the kora and djembe.

This concert describes the cycles of life and nature through
powerful rhythms. and haunting melodies; using the symbolism of the
Madonna/mother earth Goddess found in southern Italian ,African, and
Brazilian culture.

Sensuality, eroticism, lonliness, and fear of disease and death are expressed through ancient prayers, chanting, and drumming; invoking the spirit world through trance and self- hypnosis.

The features and collaborations will inspire dancing as the State of the art sound system of the Red Elephant creates a bridge between the 0spirit world and our current reality given the expertise of these highly trained gifted musicians who's technique and mastery of ancient instruments allows for Magic to be created.

The repetoire will include original songs by Allesandra Belloni who The New York Times says "has fast hands and the impassioned voice of a mediterreanean banshee", inspired by her recent trips to the shores of Recife and Southern Italy, where elements of nature, the people and their beliefs are very similar.

Sensuality and magic are part of everyday life, with the cult of the Goddess of Love and Waters Oxun and Yemenja, and the Madoona del Mare.

The African and Brazilian rythms fused with exotic instruments will awaken your body as you begin to realize it's being moved by something or someone else.

Rituals of drumming, singing, and dance are practiced in Brazil,Africa, and the East they have the power to bring people to an altered state, bringing healing to mind body and soul through energetic flow and community.

Similarly popular culture today has found electronic music and dance as an outlet.

Here were visiting the root of where thatcomes from.

Allesandra also has new material that relates to popular culture as well and is helping us live in both worlds.

Rythm magazine calls her a "medicine woman" and "Dr.Beat"

Tradtional Healing has become more important in todays world with the popularity of yoga, massage, food herbs.

We have found another reason to visit teachings of the past and make them relevant and useful today. Southern Italian rythms and chants were influenced by North Africa and the Middle east and we wish to bring back the voices of our ancestors 0through music, dance, and ancient rituals.

We're bridging the gap between history, cultures of the world, and time. Pre/Post concert and during intermission we give you a chance to make an even deeper connection to the earth we come back to earth literally with Kimberly Clarke who will be providing the freshest pupus and drinks possible from her non-gmo organic garden.

Other artists will be present with gifts honoring the
earth.

Chair Massage will also be availible.

HERMES FRANCA - New WEC Champion

CATCHING-UP WITH A CHAMPION: WEC LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE-HOLDER, HERMES FRANCA OF THE TEAM ARMORY.

With three consecutive losses in three different MMA promotions, two of which were close fights and the other an unquestionable KO, Hermes Franca needed to win. How does a fighter put the past behind them and motivate themselves back to the winner's circle? This was just the question that Armory fighter Hermes Franca faced.

Franca had a weird year in 2005 for his MMA career, especially for a fighter who was so close to the top. Franca lost three matches in 2005 and left ATT. For some, Franca's name was forgotten and imprisoned in a distant past of success. A fact that was aparent when fans questioned his placement as challenger against the 9-1 WEC Lightweight champion Gabe Ruediger on March 17th at Tachi Palace Hotel 'n' Casino in Lemoore, CA.

Most of the fans thought this was a tough fight, but one Ruediger would win, pushing himself into the spotlight and a possible UFC appearance. But a determined opponent, with a great personal slogan, "NO REST FOR THE BEST" should not be underestimated. Franca quickly lept over the stigma of his 0-3 streak and proceeded with dethroning Ruediger in just 36 seconds with a KO victory, consequently capturing the WEC Lightweight belt in its nineteenth edition, titled "Undisputed".

MaxFighting: What comments do you have about your 36 seconds fight against Gabe Ruediger at WEC 19: "Undisputed"?

Hermes Franca: I was training really hard, mainly my cardio. When I started to unload my punches I knew that I could land them without stopping during 15 minutes.

MaxFighting: You are known as a submission wizard. Do you think that Ruediger was suprised when you started landing punches?

Hermes Franca: Perhaps. I think he was right that the fight would hit the ground, or that he would be able to trade punches against me. I think that when he realized he could not, he felt the pressure and found himself totally lost. (laughs).

MaxFighting: I think not only Ruediger, but everybody expected the fight go to the ground….

Hermes Franca: Nowadays we have to train everything, to be a complete MMA fighter. We need to know a piece of everything. So I trained a lot on the ground, sharpened my hands and my sprawls. With all these tools and proper training, the submission or the KO will occur during the fight, no doubts.

MaxFighting: While Ruediger had 6 appearances in WEC, you were going into your first one. Why do you think the promoters brought you in?

Hermes Franca: I think the promoters wanted someone who already had fought in UFC and that had a huge name in USA. In spite of my 3 consecutive defeats in 2005, my name is still strong in USA. WEC contacted me and I was hungry to face Ruediger.

MaxFighting: What did you think about the structure of the WEC?

Hermes França: I was surprised. This was my first time in WEC and the event was on tv throughout USA. The fights pleased the crowd with 80% of KOs in that
night.

MaxFighting: In most internet chat rooms, most people counted you out of this fight. Do you think it was due to your three consecutives defeats already mentioned?

Hermes Franca: Of course; only GOD knows how I trained too much for this fight. A lot of people thought I was dead, I read little things about this. I trained and got 100% prepared in physical and psychological sides.

MaxFighting: The psychological side is what I would like to ask you about. How did your mind stay focused when you faced these three defeats on the road?

Hermes Franca: I had the support of my team, it is so hard to return after 3 defeats. Anyone who is fighter knows what it means in a career. So I had to please my whole team, Kurt Pellegrino, Rafael Chaves, Paulo "Guerreiro" Dantas, Joe Mulings, Wald Bloise and all our students. Everyday I learned how to surpass an obstacle: to wake-up early in the morning, eat the correct things in the correct time and "to fight against" the laziness. These personal battles increased my motivation and made me strong. NO REST FOR THE BEST, this is our logo here at the academy!

MaxFighting: Was this fight against Ruediger a do or die time for you?

Hermes Franca: I tried to focus in my preparation for this fight. I took my mind off all aspects which could harm me, it including the thoughts like this one asked by you.

MaxFighting: So are you feeling relaxed now?

Hermes Franca: The feeling could not be better, it was good and I believe that the work done by a team is very important. The energy during the trainings and pre-thoughts were fantastic. My all students were in my home watching the event - it was very cool - very similar when Brazil plays the final of World Championship of Soccer, and all Brazilians stay tuned in the front of the TV.

MaxFighting: Of your three defeats which was the hardest to accept?

Hermes Franca: All of them. But I am sure nothing was by chance, I think all what happened to me in 2005 made me to learn with the mistakes and to correct them. This was what I did. Nowadays I will only step-up on a ring with 100% of my conditions; if I am not, I do not fight.

MaxFighting: Did Yves Edwards become an obstacle inside your career? You lost twice to him.

Hermes Franca: I do not think so. Before my fight at WEC, I went to train with him in Texas. We are partners now, I think he is the number one in USA and it was a honor to fight him twice.

MaxFighting: So no possibility of França versus Edwards 3?

Hermes Franca: I do not think so. He invited me to be in his corner in Japan [at Bushido 10 vs. Seichi Ikemoto], but I could not go due to a fight that I have to do, also Pellegrino within a few days. I wish the best of lucky to Edwards.

MaxFighting: In your first time in Japan you fought HERO'S 3 and lost by majority decision to Kotetsu Boku. Which were your main mistakes during that fight?

Hermes Franca: I have no comments on that. What I do talk to you here it will not change the result of that fight. I like to look forward now. But if I face him again the "business" will be very different.

MaxFighting: You are the member of The Armory MMA team now. How do you compare ATT to the The Armory?

Hermes Franca: I do not like to make comparisons. All academies have the defects and qualities.

MaxFighting: Is The Armory a BTT's affiliated?

Hermes Franca: No, we are not. I like a lot of BTT's people, they are great. I train with them everytime time I am in Brazil. I root for them all the time they are fighting!

MaxFighting: You have three MMA belts, HOOKnSOOT, WEF and WEC now, right?

Hermes Franca: Yes, you are right. And I am looking to conquer the AFC belt in next April 22nd. All of them were tough to conquest, but there is nothing better than to conquer it.

MaxFighting: Are you already training for this fight in AFC 16 against Nick Agallar?

Hermes Franca: Yes, no rest for the best!

MaxFighting: What do you know from the AFC belt holder Agallar?

Hermes Franca: He is tough guy with a good ground-game, he likes to go to the ground on the top position. All his fights were real battles and he has a good stamina. I am focused on fighting against him with a good gameplan.

MaxFighting: Which are your targets in 2006 after this fight at AFC 16?

Hermes Franca: I let this part of my job with my manager, he takes the decisions. He booked me at AFC against Agallar and the rest is only rumors popping on internet.

MaxFighting: Thanks for your time. Last word to be added?

Hermes Franca: I want to say thanks to GOD. He is my sponsor who never failed to me in the right moments. Thanks to my family, and to my dear team and fans.

IFL Interview: Gustavo Machado

What can a big victory do for a fighter? Besides getting the win and and having the notoriety, the fighter can erase a defeat suffered in a prior battle. And that's where we find PitBulls' Gustavo "Ximu" Machado [10-4-1], who is going to collide with Brad "Bad" Blackburn [7-7] of the IFL's Tiger Sharks, in the welterweight clash in the inaugural IFL event on April 29th. Machado is coming off a defeat by TKO to Mike Pyle in the recent Gracie FC and he wants to erase that from the mind of MMA fans by defeating "Bad" Blackburn.

MaxFighting: Will the defeat to Mike Pyle stop the expectations that you have in your career for 2006?

Gustavo Machado: I hope not, and the good-news of this is that I am fighting at IFL in April 29th. I was very-well trained and I did not have problems of weight or jet-lag against Pyle. He connected a punch on my chin and took advantage of a position where I tried to sink a heel-hook. I will try to make a better showing in the IFL.

MaxFighting: Did you enjoy to compete as a team versus team MMA competition such as Gracie FC was?

Gustavo Machado: This sounded good to me. My prior fights of Gracie FC-"Gracies x HammerHouse" were faced by a different way than I did when I fought it. I had my team 'behind me', and this time in Gracie FC(and at the IFL) it will be a 'team at our side'. We, Brazilians, see it by the sport that we enjoy more, the soccer. There are eleven against eleven and I see IFL a little similar(inside the proportions) to soccer.

MaxFighting: You started your MMA career fighting around 90kg, and than you came dropping to 88kgs, 84kgs and now you are in 77kgs to compete in IFL. How are you managing it?

Gustavo Machado: I weigh(now) exactly 79kgs, because I already started my routine of losing weight. I have professionals working over molecular and bones structure. They are evaluating me because my intention is not only to lose weight; I need to keep the strength too. I am changing the amount of food for the quality of it.

MaxFighting: Are you suffering to lose the weight?

Gustavo Machado: I am feeling myself how I should, I am fast. I have done this planning of losing weight since last year. And now I am fixing some small points and adopting my life for it.

MaxFighting: And what are your teammates are speaking to you about your changing of weight? I meant, how they are feeling you during the trainings?

Gustavo Machado: They commented my punches are like hammers, and if I reach this same 'deal' in 77kgs - they presumed my opponents will not stand with me during much time. This is a big motivation for me. I have a Muay Thai background in the roots of my fighter's foundation, and to knock the adversary out is a perfect way of finishing a fight.
MaxFighting: What do you expect from IFL?

Gustavo Machado: I am from PitBulls now; this is my team. I expect to win my fight and to get a contract signed with IFL, where we will gain a salary, I hope I can become a professional fighter in all aspects. I have hopes of have fights scheduled and then I can dedicate myself only to the trainings.

MaxFighting: Mike Pyle is booked on this event too. I guess if you two get victories you will face each other. How do see this opportunity?

Gustavo Machado: I hope I can fight him again, our styles are perfect to provide a good show for the crowd. But I want to let clear that it is not personal, inside the Brazilian culture we like to try "to avenge" our defeats. This happened when I lost to Ricardo Arona, Benji Radach(teammate of IFL's opponent Brad "Bad" Blackburn) and Talles Leites; and when I drew to Yuki Sasaki. Pyle had merits of beating me in Gracie FC, and I am motivated to beat Brad Blackburn and then to meet him again.

MaxFighting: Do you think Blackburn can collect info from you based in what his teammate Radach tells him?

Gustavo Machado: I do not know, that my fight can not be used like a parameter. I was not mentally in that KOTC's cage, only my body.

MaxFighting: Pyle told me he watched your fights to see you main points. Did you do the same before that fight?

Gustavo Machado: I would like to, but I did not. WEC is not easy to reach here in Brazil. I like to watch opponents' stuff, but it has a good and a bad point.Because if you based your fight-plan over what you watched from the opponent, you can get punk'd. Nowadays we are training everything to overcome and surprise the opponent's intentions. I am ready for all against Blackburn even(for while) I can not reach stuff from him.

MaxFighting: Your first opponent scheduled was Eric Dahlberg. Even though you have a little more than 1 month to prepare, does this change affect your preparation?

Gustavo Machado: No, I can watch(maybe) the IFC-Rock&Rumble's fight of Blackburn, that went to the third round. While from Dahlberg I am sure I would have no chances of watching anything.

MaxFighting: After your defeat to Pyle people started on doubting about your skills. Are you worried with it?

Gustavo Machado: Sure I am not glad on hearing it. But I did not have four defeats on the road or I am 4-5 in MMA or something like that. People need to understand that the opportunities I had were only a few, I did efforts to win all of them, but my opponents did it too. We see fighters competing 5 times or more in one year, and I never had this calendar to me, closest I got to it was 3 times in same year. I take a look on internet and I see fighters with 0-6 in last six fighters or worst records than that, and the promoters still give them the chances on the events. I think if I had the same resume I would agree with people who doubted of my faculties such as a fighter, but I understand what they meant. I wanted the opportunities. I am in the second one inside the first semester of 2006. Lets try to make me this same question in the end of the year, so I think I can answer it more properly.

MaxFighting: Will you be focused only in IFL and USA MMA promotions now?

Gustavo Machado: Like a professional fighter, I am focused in what is better for my career. I am ready to fight anywhere.

MaxFighting: When did you come back to the trainingsafter Gracie FC for this fight in IFL?

Gustavo Machado: One week after Gracie FC I was already on the trainings-routine, hungriest to erase in IFL my defeat in Gracie FC.

MaxFighting: Would you like to add anything else?

Gustavo Machado: I had big support of Renzo, Roberto "Gordo" Correa and Gracie Barra CT in the fight against Pyle. I will have the same support at IFL and I am in very-well in whatever I have to do against Blackburn. My fans in Brazil know my potential and I do not want to disappoint them. I hope to display a show at IFL through a victory over Blackburn. Also thank you to my sponsor HAUS FightWear(http://www.hausfightwear.com.br).

Quote of the Day

Cage Rage 3
March 25, 2006
Hanapepe Stadium, Kauai

An estimated crowd of about 3,000 plus came out to see Vance Pascua & Randy Ortiz third edition of Kauai’s now famous Cage Rage MMA event. Headlining the card was Kauai’s own Eben Kaneshiro, winner of the two previous Cage Rage main events, taking on a very tough Miletich fighter Joe Pearson. Also in attendance were MMA superstars Kimo, Falaniko Vitale, Kit Cope, ICON Middleweight Champion Robbie Lawler and Ultimate Fighter season 2 star Anthony Torres.

There were fifteen fights on the card; 5 kickboxing and 10 MMA. The fans were treated to an excellent mixture of stand up battles as well as smooth ground work from all schools. But, jiu-jitsu reigned supreme on this night as fighters from Ka-Mole and Kauai Technical Institute (KTI) showed their awesome ground skills and increasing striking skills producing two rear naked chokes and a TKO in their matches.

The main event started with Eben taking the center of the cage and firing punches to Pearson. In a surprise move, Pearson jumped to guard and Eben, a black belt in jiu-jitsu obliged. The Miletich fighter went for triangle after triangle but Eben was just a step ahead and began landing heavy punches which Pearson could not handle and was forced to tap out in the very first round. Eben continued his dominance and upped his record to 10-2. Big thanks to Vance and company for an awesome event!! Here are the rest of the results.

MILETICH SPEAKS

Pat Miletich

Pat Miletich was recently interviewed by the Sherdog website. Here's what Miletich had to say:

Interviewer: For the benefit of those people who are not familiar, can you fill us in on what Dana [White's] beef was?

Miletich: Well, from what I can understand he felt that the IFL hired [former UFC exec] Keith Evans illegally or that there was some illegal thing going on or whatever. In my mind IFL was going to make Dana mad eventually. Dana sometimes gets mad about things. He decided that he was going to sue the IFL for doing things he felt was wrong. I talked to Dana and said that I didn't think it was a good idea, and tried to remain calm with him, [saying] it's not necessary. The IFL is going to help the UFC by bringing more notoriety to the sport, so just [let it go]. I mean, why would you blame somebody for hiring a guy who's qualified? If I'm running a fight organization and Keith Evans says, "I'm available." I say, "Great, you're hired." Be mad at Keith, great. Keith didn't stick with Zuffa for whatever reasons; there are obvious reasons he didn't stick with them, that was Dana's beef, I think, to be honest with you. Hurt his feelings. Hell, I don't know.

Interviewer: Based on your dealings with Dana, was this a surprise to you?

Miletich: No, because he told me he was going to crush him. I had a feeling, and like I said I tried to talk him out of it. Negative stuff like that does nothing but hurt everybody involved. Dana might not realize it but it's hurting the UFC also.

Interviewer: Moving on to IFL. With all due respect to Mr. Otto and Mr. Shamus, to be blunt, why do you need these guys? You've got a great team yourself, and you know more about the fight game than anyone. Why not just start your own thing?

Miletich: Because these guys are great businessman. They know how to run a business. I know how to run my business. They know how to run their business. We make a great team together. All the people involved... I'm a small, a very small portion of this thing. I'm one little cog, one wheel in this machine. There's a lot of people involved in this that are all very qualified people. So it's a great thing. Gareb's Wizard Entertainment Company has connections to a lot of TV networks, movie studios, toy companies, comic books, a lot of other magazines; things like that to where we can reach millions and millions of people that have never even seen this sport. I mean, in my hometown, half of my town has no idea what Ultimate Fighting is, and I grew up there my whole life, and there are 40 professional fighters that live there in a town of 40,000 people. Give me a break. How many people out there across the United States alone don't even know what our sport is and haven't even been reached yet? That says a lot for IFL. And it's being marketed with a true league feel and touch. All that stuff is important for bringing in that guy that normally, if he saw fights in a cage, he'd go, "What a joke, this is ridiculous," and click over to basketball on ESPN. This is a different look, and we want to get people that are normally not interested in the sport to jump onboard.

Interviewer: How long has this been in the works?

Miletich: Since about late summer [2005].

Interviewer: I would imagine that you get approached by guys with the "next big idea" all the time.

Miletich: Yeah.

Interviewer: So was it Otto and Shamus's business sense that clinched the deal for you?

Miletich: Yes, but I also just liked the idea. I love the idea. I thought it was great. I grew up wrestling. A lot of people have trouble with the concept of a team thing with fighting. But what they don't understand is I grew up wrestling my whole life, and all the guys that grew up wrestling their whole life know that it is a team sport and it is also scored individually. So it's easy to do.

Interviewer: Who are the coaches, officially? There have been some changes.

Miletich: Maurice Smith (Pictures), Renzo Gracie (Pictures), Bas Rutten (Pictures) and myself.

Interviewer: No Tank Abbott?

Miletich: (laughs) No.

Interviewer: Are you an equity owner in this league?

Miletich: No.

Interviewer: Did you have any input into the rules or structure of it?

Miletich: Some.

Interviewer: Are you at liberty to discuss where you had input?

Miletich: No elbows was my idea. And also pretty much everyone agreed about no elbows, just for the sheer fact of keeping people healthy.

Interviewer: You've got the "no elbows" rule, you've got the ring, you've got the shorter rounds. What do you say to the fan that says this is UFC or PRIDE lite?

Miletich: I'd say wait till you see the fights and you'll understand that these guys are the real deal.

Interviewer: Each team has an operating budget, correct?

Miletich: Yes.

Interviewer: Are you acting as coach and GM? Do you handle that budget, or does IFL?

Miletich: After we get out of the preseason, I'll be given a budget to work with, and I'll take care of my fighters the way I have to. Obviously the books will be looked at by IFL.

Interviewer: So you're like Pat Riley to the Miami Heat: coach and manager of operations?

Miletich: Yes.

Interviewer: Can your top fighters compete, or is it only new faces we'll see?

Miletich: It won't be just new faces, there's going to be some veterans, some Pay-Per-View veterans that are going to be in there. My job as a coach is not this season necessarily. My job is to build a foundation for successful reign for many years to come, so I decided to go with young fighters that have very good records that I know are capable of destroying people and doing it for several years down the road. I don't want a guy that's been on Pay-Per-View for 10 years and is at the end of his career just because I want to win this year. Even though I think we'll dominate the first year.

Interviewer: Can you discuss the TV deal?

Miletich: There are negotiations [underway]. I really can't talk about that.

Interviewer: Turning to Team Miletich for a minute. You've got one of the best, if not the best brands in the business. Obviously that is going to attract talent. Are you finding now with the competition that you need to do anything differently to attract guys to your camp? Do you recruit?

Miletich: I never recruit. The only thing I do - because we've started such a strong affiliate program now that we're really getting a lot of affiliate schools - what I can do from that, the guys who graduate from the affiliate programs into my facility, who are the cream of the crop from their gyms. Then come to my place to get fine-tuned and get even better, and get more fights at a higher level, until they make it to pay-per-view. It's a great system.

Interviewer: So you now have your own farm system.

Miletich: Absolutely. Whatever I can do to help any of those guys that have dreams or aspirations of getting there. It's a great way for a guy like me, who loves to teach. But there's too many people out there to teach; it's a great way for me to touch people's lives sometimes without even having taught them. Because I'm teaching the guys that are teaching them. One way or another they're learning good stuff.

Interviewer: Once they come out to your facility, are they officially still a free agent? Or do they sign with you as well?

Miletich: I've done no paperwork with anyone. I've never signed a contract with any of my fighters. If they're not happy with the way we're doing things, they're more than free to go somewhere else.

Interviewer: As a coach, you're at the top of the pyramid, but I would imagine you wouldn't stay there as long as you have if you're not constantly pushing the envelope yourself. So what do you do to learn new stuff? Do you bring other guys in? Do you reach out to other coaches?

Miletich: You've definitely got to have an open mind, and you're always looking to improve. But also at the same time, you don't have to reinvent the wheel. There's different ways of wrestling, there's different ways of doing jiu-jitsu, boxing, Muay Thai, everything else. But still, fundamentals are always going to win. The guys that have the strongest fundamentals in all the areas of fighting are gonna win. The best Olympic wrestlers on the planet - I say this time and time again - are using single-legs and double-legs, just like they were doing in first grade. They just do them better than anybody else in the world. You can't stop 'em. It doesn't matter if you know my game, if you know I'm going to come in and do certain things in my fight, you still have to be good enough to stop it. So we're always going at things with an open mind; we always use things that work and are proven. We have no problem absorbing new material and adding it into the system, that's the beauty of throwing the ego out the window and saying, "Nobody's the best in the world. Maybe for one night I was, at one time in my life, whatever - but you've just got to say, 'Hey, that's a great technique, let's use it.'"

Interviewer: Let's turn to your camp. I'll leave this one open-ended: Matt Hughes.

Miletich: Matt Hughes. Continues his dominance, and I believe will continue his dominance for as long as he probably wants to.

Interviewer: He said he felt Royce (Gracie) was behind the times, but is he altering his preparation in any way for that fight? How much does he vary the approach based on the fighter?

Miletich: Our approach is really always the same: we always work on ground and stand-up. We work wrestling, whether it's offense/defense, we work the same amount pretty much for anybody that we fight. If you're not a well-rounded fighter then you don't belong in the game. Just because he's fighting Royce doesn't mean he's working more on his jiu-jitsu. To be honest with you, he's probably working more on his throws so he can launch Royce directly onto his head and then throttle him to within an inch of his life, and then submit him just to prove a point. Matt is setting out to prove a point with Royce in this fight.

Interviewer: Not suggesting Matt is looking ahead, but can we talk about Georges St. Pierre?

Miletich: Let's first get back to Royce - Matt's mad. Matt's offended that Royce is even getting in the ring with him and thinking he's gonna win. First of all, Matt thinks that way for everybody, it doesn't matter who you are. The fact that you get in the ring with him, he's offended that you have the balls to climb in the ring with him and think you're going to win. That's just his mentality.

Interviewer: Back to GSP. Hasn't his game improved since the first fight?

Miletich: Yeah, I think he's improved; I definitely think he's improved. I think everybody improves the longer they're in it. Has he improved enough to beat Matt? I don't think so. Matt's always going to be stronger than him. Matt's always going to move better than him when it comes to wrestling and grappling. He's never gonna out-power Matt. He's a strong kid, but until Matt's 45 he's not going to out-power Matt. He may catch him. I've been wrong, Georges is a great fighter. Georges is the next best fighter in that weight division without a doubt in the world.

Interviewer: Moving to Tim Sylvia. Obviously a tough loss to Arlovski the first time around. How is the approach this time going to be different?

Miletich: Fundamentals. He lost last time for not paying attention to fundamentals, but trust me he's been working a lot on that. Nothing fancy. You don't need anything fancy to beat guys.

Interviewer: Jens Pulver.

Miletich: Jens is fighting the beginning of April over in Japan, not exactly sure who he is fighting. But without a doubt Jens will go over and make it exciting. Jens could fight his sister or he could fight King Kong and he'll make it exciting. He's a showman and he's a great fighter. Jens plans on using all of his tools this time instead of just his boxing skills. He got in that mindset that he had to just box and bang and turn it into a brawl and wanted the crowd on their feet. What he was forgetting about is that winning gets you paid more.

Interviewer: So you felt he was focusing on boxing too much?

Miletich: It wasn't that so much as he was more concerned with putting on a show for the crowd because he knew the Japanese people loved that. That's what he wanted to do, and he still loves doing that.

Interviewer: How about Robbie? Some people felt he was a candidate for comeback fighter of the year last year. As a coach, what did you do to keep his confidence up, his head in the game after the tough losses in 2004?

Miletich: Everything happens for a reason. I think Rob needed that stuff to happen to realize that he couldn't depend on just ability alone, just going out and throwing bombs and trying to get people with every punch. Rob's now matured as a fighter so much that in the room, being deadly honest with you, in the room when Rob spars or grapples very rarely at any moment, in any practice, can anybody hang with Rob. When Rob wants to open up, Tim Sylvia will be gassed in three rounds. That's saying how good Rob is, because Tim Sylvia hits hard and he's a great fighter. Rob is just so smart at fighting in the room, and now finally in the ring, that he's got the potential to be - if, if - he truly works hard, he's got the potential to be probably the best guy ever to come out of the camp, and that's saying some crazy stuff with guys like Pulver and Hughes and all these other guys that have come out.

Interviewer: So are you hinting that he hasn't worked as hard as you'd like?

Miletich: When he was younger, he was depending on ability a lot, and he was injured a lot also. I've got to cut the kid some slack, because the three losses that he's got, were fights he never really trained for because he was hurt the entire time. That had a lot to do with it too. You have to give Rob a lot of credit for going into those fights, not having trained enough and injured. Hey, you're young; you're injured; you need the money; and you feel you can do it anyway, more power to him. He's got a lot of guts. Now that Rob is performing in the ring the way he does in the room, with sharp, crisp punches, any time he wipes his hands on people they're gonna fall.

Interviewer: So is IFL next or UFC next?

Miletich: [Icon], for all of next year. Rob signed an exclusive contract with [Icon], and he'll go with nowhere else, unless somebody's willing to buy out that quarter million dollar contract and pay Rob quite well.

Interviewer: Anybody else in the stable you'd like to comment on?

Miletich: We've got so many tough guys coming up, they've fought a lot but look for the IFL to be exciting. We've got a lot of guys fighting in the UFC coming up. Spencer Fisher just had a loss in the UFC but it was a great performance coming off a week's vacation down in North Carolina, then cutting 20 pounds in two days. On a last minutes notice they called him in to fight, went in and had a war, so great things for him coming up. But also, April 6th, we've got three guys: Sam Hoger, Josh Neer and our big boy, "The Hillbilly Heartthrob." Those guys are fighting.

Interviewer: Everybody needs a gimmick, right?

Miletich: Yeah (laughs). The 15th is Sylvia-Arlovski, then we roll into May for Hughes-Gracie, and again, Pulver in April over in Japan.

Interviewer: Can you comment on the fight promotion company you've got in the works?

Miletich: Discussions have started. But first things first - we're concentrating on the affiliate program and the fight game. That's all we're doing. With the affiliate program we've got people interested in London, Madrid, Beijing, up in Canada, all over the United States, so we've got a lot of good things happening. We welcome all people who are interested in taking a look at that program. We're going to have a lot of fun with it, we're going to cover the globe with Miletich fighting systems, and really educate people on what fighting is all about.

Interviewer: How many affiliate schools do you have now?

Miletich: We have six that are actually open, and about 14 will be open in the next couple of months.

Interviewer: So we're hearing rumors of a comeback. Can you talk about it?

Miletich: Yes, I am [coming back]. It will be this summer against a big name opponent. I can't say exactly who it is.

Interviewer: Feel free to tell us.

Miletich: I wish I could (laughs). I wish I could open my mouth, but it's a fight that I've wanted for a lot of years. We're great friends and when we talked about fighting each other we laughed. We said, "Yeah, let's go out and knock the living hell out of each other and put on a great show for the crowd." It's going to be a lot of fun. The card is exceptional from top to bottom, the fighters that are on it are phenomenal.

Interviewer: As a businessman, the sport's peaking and I would imagine it would be hard to turn down a comeback. It's great for you [financially] and Miletich Fighting Systems in general. Is that what's driving these comebacks lately?

Miletich: For me, I was the one pushing for this and the reason I was is because I had a neck injury three years ago and I didn't want my body to tell me when I had to quit. I've rebuilt my body completely. My neck's solid. I've taken some heavy strikes from my fighters, punches and kicks. That doesn't bother me, so I'm ready to rock and roll.

Interviewer: I'm guessing training's a way of life for you, so you probably don't have to turn it up too much to get in fighting shape, or am I wrong?

Miletich: No, I need to turn it up a lot. I mean, I can still go in and spar 12 rounds with pretty much any of my guys - minus Lawler and maybe some of my big guys, some of the heavyweights. But just for the sheer fact that I have to lift hard, I have to run hard, I have to wrestle hard, I have to spar hard, I have to hit mitts, Thai pads, I have to stretch a lot, there's a lot of things that I always did for fights that I don't do as a coach as much. As a coach, I'm an extra body. I'll get in there and bang with Matt Hughes for six rounds, 10 rounds, whatever, sparring, but because I'm not in shape I'm getting hurt because of it. I'm not doing my running and lifting and things like that - I'm just an extra body right now. So I need to rebuild my body so that I'm not getting hurt, which I've been in the process of doing the past couple of months.

Interviewer: How much training do you think you'll need to get there?

Miletich: Twelve weeks of very intense training and I'll be 100 percent.

POLICE STILL LOOKING FOR MURRAY

Police are still looking for MMA fighter Lee Murray in regards to the 53 million Tonbridge heist...The following article is courtesy of The Sun newspaper from the UK.

The Sun Online: By RICHARD WHITE, MIKE SULLIVAN
and TONY BONNICI

Three women have been arrested over the £53million Tonbridge heist, it was revealed last night.

It is believed a mother and her two daughters were held in raids at two houses.

One of them is said to be a friend of cage fighter Lee Murray, who is on the run.

The women are being held in connection with money laundering and handling stolen property.

Cops swooped at 1am yesterday in Thamesmead, near Woolwich, South East London.

One house was empty but a woman was arrested five hours later as she arrived home.

A neighbour said: “There must have been at least ten cops.

“There was a lot of noise as they smashed down the door and windows.”

A Kent Police spokesman said last night: “Officers investigating the Tonbridge Securitas robbery arrested three women in London for money laundering and handling stolen property.”

Forensic teams spent yesterday searching one of the houses before boarding it up.

Kickboxer Murray, 28, rented the car salvage yard in Welling, Kent, where £7m from the record robbery was found. He and a business pal were first thought to have fled to South America.

But Murray — who was stabbed in a bloody fight after a celebrity-filled West End party last year — is now thought to have returned to Europe.

Cops have arrested 21 people so far and charged five.

They are still looking for £33million.

SALAVERRY COMMENTS ABOUT RUMORS

There was plenty of speculation on a few websites over the weekend stating that Ivan Salaverry was coming back to the UFC to face Evan Tanner. Those reports couldn't be further from the truth according to Salaverry.

Salaverry told MMAWeekly over the weekend that he was never close to fighting Tanner saying quote "Where do these reports come from? Of course I'm not fighting Tanner on a few weeks notice. I'm a professional and I have no problem fighting Tanner, I am not going to do it without being prepared." Salaverry said.

Jeremy Horn pulled out of his upcoming battle with Evan Tanner at UFC 59 after a back injury would not let him compete. Horn has now been replaced by Justin Levens, one of the top fighters in the WEC.

Salaverry further commented saying he hasn't signed with anyone saying he is waiting for the right offer. "I'm not going to jump into just anything at this point of my career. I have my wife to think about, my family is important to me. It has to be the right deal." Salaverry said.

Levens instead will jump into the UFC against Tanner. Levens fought for a WEC title losing a heartbreaking battle to Scott Smith who is also making his debut on this same UFC card against David Terrell. Levens is 11-2 as a professional and fights under legendary coach and former fighter Marco Ruas.

Leo Santos in all about MMA in 2006

BJJ World-wide for six times, Leonardo Santos will prioritize the Vale-Tudo in 2006. Who guarantees that is the master black-belt, Wendell Alexsander, who spent two months with Leo in Canada. There, Leonardo is preparing himself with his brother Wagnney Fabiano for his new debut in the rings, which will probably happen in June in a Canadian event.

- He will hardly fight with kimono this year. Leo is there, hide, training. As I saw in Canada, he will rock - said Wendell. Leo Santo's history in Vale-Tudo is just one fight, against the Pride GP Lightweight champion, Takanori Gomi, who was defeated by split decision of the judges. "I already watched that fight more than ten times. For a first fight, which was excellent", remembers Wendell.

Four months in Canada, Leonardo Santos returns at the end of this year to Rio de Janeiro where he will train. With the focused in the Showfight, event that Leo was cogitated to participate of the fourth edition. "He had some commitments in Canada and couldn't fight. But I already talked to Fepa (Fernando Lopes, event's producer) and in the next one Leo will be ready", said Wendell.

WCFC REPORT "No Guts, No Glory"

Bas Rutten was on hand to MC the event and provide color commentary with PRIDE’s James Thompson. The opening bout pitted Pancrase veteran Yuki Sasaki (18-11-1) against Holland’s Rodney Faverus (23-10-3) in the 8 Warrior Knockout Tournament.

Faverus took the early initiative with a forceful takedown on his Japanese rival. Sasaki appeared comfortable on his back and had no desire to return to his feet. After a brief period of inactivity referee Case Bateman returned the fighters to their feet. Faverus worked Sasaki over with a combination of punches which led to a takedown. Sasaki quickly reversed his position and gained half-mount on the Team Schrijber fighter. Yuki Sasaki offered light offence but not enough for the referee who once again stood both men up. A fiery exchange saw Faverus take an advantage in the closing stages of the first round. Sasaki once again on his back made an attempt at an armbar submission and was able to roll Faverus through and lock it in. A resolute Faverus didn’t tap but left the referee no alterative than to stop the fight before Saski broke the Dutch man’s arm.

Winner: Yuki Sasaki, R1, by armbar

The second bout of the 8 Warrior Knockout Tournament featured Brazilian Leonardo “Chocolate” Nascimento (2-3-0) taking on Ireland’s Rodney Moore (1-2-0) .

A frantic start from Nascimento saw Moore on the receiving end of a high kick which rocked the British fighter. The Brazilian swept Moore off his feet with relative ease and instantly locked on an armbar. Irish Moore tapped early, establishing our second semi-finalist in the tournament to crown the inaugural WCFC Champion.

Winner: Leonardo “Chocolate” Nascimento, R1 by armbar

Next up was Roan “Jucao” Carneiro (6-3-0) against Gregory Bouchelaghem (5-1-0) in another tournament bout.

Bouchelaghem fired a series of low kicks in the fights opening which Roan replied to with a flurry on punches. As the fight moved to the ground the BTT fighter fired down on Bouchelaghem with clubbing fists. Roan initially evaded kicks from the French man who layed beneath him but finally connected with two devastating kicks into the Brazilian’s face. (Note: At this stage Nascimento’s corner men came down to ringside to support their fellow countrymen).

(Note: British boxing sensation Amir Khan arrived to a good ovation as the fighters recuperated ahead of the second round)

Gregory Bouchelaghem returned to his previous kickboxing offence looking to test Roan. A flying knee is caught by “Jucao” who drives his European rival to the mad hard. A Period of inactivity leads to both men returning to their feet and a quick fire burst from Bouchelaghem as the round concludes.

Winner: Roan “Jucao” Carneiro by split decision

To decide the final tournament semi-finalist Team Quest’s Matt Horwich (14-5-1) faced Lithuanian Petras Morkevicius (12-5-0).

Submission expert Horwich took the early precedence with a triangle choke attempt. (Note: Mike Tyson arrives with his entourage and takes his V.I.P ringside seat, diverting all attention from the action in the cage). Morkevicius eventually escaped only to return to his feet and be slammed into the mat. Horwich once again edged for a submission and successfully secured a rear naked choke. On this occasion the Lithuanian wasn’t as fortunate and tapped, booking Horwich the last semi-final spot.

Winner: Matt Horwich, R1 by rear naked choke

In an intriguing lightweight clash UFC veteran Din Thomas (17-5-0) collided with Luciano Azevedo (7-2-0) of the Renovacao Fight Team.

An immediate exchange concludes with Thomas flooring Azevedo with a right hook. The Luta Livre fighter promptly returns to his feet and attempts a takedown on Thomas. Azevedo countered the American’s great sprawl with a low kick and passed his guard. Both fighters fail to offer any offence as the round ends before the referee enforced the inactivity rule.

Thomas charges at Azevedo in the opening of the second round and drives him against the cage. The Brazilians takedown attempts are easily evaded by his American opponent who launches a right and left combination. Azevedo replies and both men jockey for position on the mat. Thomas’ full mount position is reversed as the second round closes.

The UFC veteran Din Thomas come out aggressively in the third round and overpowered his startled opponent. As Thomas attempted a takedown he was caught by a low kick which but quickly recovered to launch a flurry of punches before the final bell rang.

Winner: Luciano Azevedo by unanimous decision

In the first tournament semi-final Yuki Sasaki took on Leonardo “Chocolate” Nascimento.

Nascimento overwhelmed Sasaki early on with a couple of combinations and a devastating right hook which floored the Japanese fighter. Nascimento reigned down on Sasaki who defended valiantly. While the Pancrase veteran appeared to have a clear advantage on the mat it was Nascimento who launched a surprise submission attempt. Sasaki was unable to defend the anaconda choke and tapped to seal our first tournament finalist.

Winner: Leonardo “Chocolate” Nascimento, R1, by anaconda choke

In the second semi-final Roan “Jucao” Carneiro faced Matt Horwich.

A slow start sees both fighters in the clinch until Roan moves to a double underhook. The BTT fighter worked on a neck crank but Horwich slipped out and moved to half mount.

The second round opened with a flying knee from Roan which appeared to hurt his American rival who looked for the clinch. A gassed Horwich offered no sprawl defence and was soon underneath the energetic Brazilian. Matt recovered and gained full mount over Roan which proved in vein as the final bell rang and our tournament final was confirmed.

Winner: Roan “Jucao” Carneiro by split decision

Bas Rutten introduced special guest Mike Tyson to a huge ovation as he prepared to referee the next contest - Diego Gonzalez (5-2-0) collided with Liverpool’s Terry Etim (3-0-0).

A takedown by Diego sparked a period of inactivity to which Tyson was aware and returned both men to their feet. Etim got the better of a brief exchange and momentarily synched in a triangle choke, leading to Iron Mike stopping the fight for a decisive first round victory.

In a change to the scheduled fight card Alexandre “Cacareco” Ferriera (10-4-0) (who refused to face Gewik Mousassi due to his different weight class) faced Holland’s Michael Knapp (11-8-3).

Ferriera flew into action and looked for a quick takedown. Eventually the luta livre expert mounted Knapp after holding on in the clinch and forcing the Dutch man to the ground. Ferriera locked on an armbar for a clinical victory early in the first.

Winner: Alexandre “Cacareco” Ferriera, R1 by armbar

In a previously unannounced clash Alex Reid (6-3-1) fought Jason Tann (2-0-0).

Tann overcome an offensive storm of knees from Reid to move to a double underhook. The “Reidernater” was driven into the cage and floored by Tann who started to fire down on the Cage Rage veteran. Reid reversed the position and worked on Tann with body shots in the half mount. After returning to their feet Alex began to dominate the stand up and fire kicks and knees without response.

Jason sprung into action in round two and rocked Reid with a right and left combination. After a short time in the clinch Tann slammed Reid with velocity.

Winner: Jason Tann by split decision

The next bout saw Sanjin Kadunk (2-1-0) face the daunting proposition of fighting PRIDE superstar Alistair Overeem (22-6-0).

The “Demolition Man” flew into action, attacking Kadunk with a high kick and unloadeda series of rights and lefts. Overeem gained full mount and moved smoothly into an armbar for a conclusive win.

In the tournament final Leonardo “Chocolate” Nascimento took on fellow Brazilian Roan “Jucao” Carneiro to crown the inaugural WCFC Champion.

Nascimento connected with a high kick and followed up with a mean right hook. Carneiro recovered but was unable to offer any offence as he was stood pressed against the cage. A rapid Nascimento right kick floored Roan who briskly returned to his feet only to receive another high kick on the bell.

Roan appeared to be in a great deal of pain as the doctor rushed into the cage to check his condition. The referee signalled the end of the fight and Bas was on hand to announce that Roan had broke his right foot.

Winner: Leonardo “Chocolate” Nascimento, R1, TKO

Nascimento was awarded his WCFC title belt and a cheque for 10k while the bitterly unlucky Roan “Jucao” Carneiro received a cheque for 5k.

Bas announced the second WCFC event will be in July and fans can expect to see a bigger, better show, which will once again feature the ever impressive Alistair Overeem.

Post-show I asked for Bas’ opinions on WCFC’s inaugural event. El Guapo was encouraged by what he saw, “what a way to start, it was a great event.” Bas had a tremendous time and eagerly awaits the return show in July.

Roan “Jucao” Carneiro, WCFC 8-man Tourney Champ, Injury Update

Brazilian Top Team’s Roan “Jucao” Carneiro reportedly sustained a broken right-foot in the 8 Warrior Knockout Tournament Final against Leonardo “Chocolate” Nascimento at WCFC No Guts No Glory.

However Roan confirmed today that his foot isn’t broken but heavily inflamed and will require a month to heal.

Roan is anxious to return to the UK and compete at WCFC’s second show in July and has his mind set on an opponent, “I want to fight against Léo Nascimento again”, commented “Jucao”.

Léo Nascimento became the inaugural WCFC Champion when Roan had to retire due to doctor stoppage at the conclusion of round one.

FREDSON PAIXAO - "THE LITTLE HEAVY HITTER"

MaXfighting: This was your first time fighting in the USA, what did you think about the chance and the difference of atmosphere from Brazilian fights?

Fredson Paixao: The experience was amazing, I think he I got more recognition than when I fought in Japan. I think that the doors opened to me after this fight at Gracie FC and I am taking advantage of it.

MF: I heard you had problems during the weight-ins. What happened?

Fredson Paixao: I did not have problems that harmed my performance against Mike French. I heard people talked that I lost my strength in the choke position, and I could not finish it. But French worked to free himself from my rear-naked-choke, he deserves recognition for it. But, about the weigh-ins. I cut the weight, but I drank water and ate some fruits I think since my body was dehydrated it absorbed the water and the fruits so deep and I gained weight back. So when I went to weight officially I was over-weight. I went to the sauna and got and suffered to reach the weight again. This was okay, because I had already cut 7kgs in my Pancrase-Brave 7 [August '04] fight against Yoshiro Maeda, and it was in the same day of fight. At Gracie FC it was one day prior, so I managed well.

MF: What did you know about French?

Paixao: He is a smart fighter, he wanted to knock me out with knees. I was a little smart too, and once again I have to mention my Pancrase fight against Maeda. I told you in my pre-fight interview that Maeda mauled me a lot, so I believed that if he did not get to knock me out, French would not either. So I did not worry about his attacks and I got to dominate the pace on the ground.

MF: You are a Gracie CT member, but this was the first time you represented the GRACIE family. So did you manage this fact well?

Fredson Paixao: I did not think on it at all, because I think that if you put heavy burdens over your shoulder, you can harm your focus for the fight. I do feel proud and I had honor of represent the family, and I am happy I won my fight under the Gracie flag.

MF: You were the only Brazilian who won in whole event. How do you see this?

Fredson Paixao: This was not the Brazilians' day at the. They [Rhalan, Machado, Moares, Leopoldo and Daniel] gave their best to score points to our team, and to win their fights. But we need to know that in the other side of the ring are fighters who are very capable and who had the same target than we had in that day. Lepoldo faced Lindland and I was impressed with how he did try everything to turn the fight into his favor all the time. He ate punches, was taken down- but he did not slow his determination. If he did not win his fight he at least proved he is not a coward, and I do not like coward people. And if I like Leopoldo, I like this warrior now more than ever!!!

MF: The Gracie FC was a teams' challenge. Did you like the format of this event?

Fredson Paixao: People told me that this is the first MMA event that had a team vs. team confrontation. But it is really the first of this kind of event in USA, because Brazil was first of booking this kind of format with Luta-Livre vs. Jiu Jitsu in '92. I like the format I think it is more exciting and the crowd has an extra interest on these competitions. I saw a good rivalry between the cities there in Ohio. The innovation is good for the sport. I am happy for winning my fight at this event.

MF: What did you think about the two Americans [Cardella and O'Donnel] who fought representing Team Gracie?

Fredson Paixao: I did not know them, and I do not know their resumes in MMA. But I like their style of looking for the submission all the times, and I felt happy because they won their fights. I hope to have a chance of training with them one day or simply to meet them once again.

MF: When are you going back to Brazil?

Fredson Paixao: March 21st I will go home. I am conducting seminars teaching personal BJJ classes and spent some time with Carlson Gracie's Pete "The Greek" [editors's note: Pete is the Ironheart Crown ring announcer] and Carlson Jr. They are giving the enough support here and I am happy of developing a good-job here in Chicago and in Washington.

MF: Is it true that you lost your main sponsor?

Fredson Paixao: I would not like to comment much about it, they helped while they could. So I am taking opportunity of this interview to say that I am open for sponsors my accomplishments are not small ones and I already have 2 fights scheduled for early 2006. So sponsor are welcome [laughs]. I did a marketing here at MaXfighting, thank you.

MF: Which are these two your fights scheduled?

Fredson Paixao: Jungle FC 6th in Brazil and an event in Slovenia.

MF: Before we close, I would like to ask you... Do you have a special wish of facing Maeda again?

Fredson Paixao: Maybe yes, maybe not. That fight changed my career a lot. I was 1-0 when I fought him and I faced terrible circumstances that I would not like to mention again. I am not hungry and fighting all lightweight fighters to reach Maeda again, this is not my deal. When the right moment arrives, I will be happy on having a second chance to face him and I hope to propose an exciting toe-to-toe match for the crowd.

MF: Thank you for your time. Last words?

Fredson Paixao: Thanks to GOD. He has given prestige to me and I am on His road all the time. I would lalso ike the thank my sponsors... but I do have any, [laughs], so my "thanks" are open for for any sponsors [laughs]

Quinton Jackson to the UFC?

In what has to be considered a welcome bombshell it appears that Quinton "Rampage" Jackson is coming to the UFC. On his website
http://www.rampagestreetsoldier.com his splash page features a video with Rampage wearing a UFC title belt.

He talks about the UFC and how great they are doing. He then goes onto comment on how much money they are making and says "sounds good to me, they are making a whole lot of money. I can do a whole lot of things with that money." If this is true then that means that we could see the much anticipated rematch between Chuck Liddell and Jackson. Rampage is the only other fighter that has beat Chuck that he has not gotten a rematch with.. MaxFighting will keep you up to date with all of the latest information as it becomes available.

3 Week Headstart : Beginner’s Weight Training tips for beginning MMA fighters

In the world of mixed martial arts there are many factors that determine a fight’s outcome. Stamina, technique, heart, desire, and so many more attributes factor into the formula for winning a fight. One of the most important and sometimes overlooked aspect is raw strength. Not just “hitting the weights”, but really training for whole body strength. Over the next three weeks, I will be posting the kick-start workout program I am on and sort of a blog about it here on MaXfighting.com

One of the most commonly asked questions on MMA boards by new MMA fighters is this, “Anybody have any advice or workout tips for me?” A legitimate question, but not one you really want to ask a bunch of people on the forums. My advice having been around the sport for a number of years is to get a personal trainer or ask someone who is involved in weight training. The personal trainer is the way to go if you have the money to spare, but what amateur fighter The number one way to learn how and when to train is reading. Plain and simple reading. The more you educate yourself, the better. Read on nutrition first and then read on the fitness aspect of it. Eating right makes getting stronger easier and makes your body happy. Fast food does not, not even the fish sandwich. Eat as healthy as possible and as my friend Rich Franklin says, “Eat what naturally grows and what eats what naturally grows”.

With all of that being said here is the 3-day program I am on for week #1 : In no way does MaXfighting assume any responsibility for any injuries sustained while performing this program. Always consult a physician before starting any workout program or diet.

Workout 1 – 3 times a week total body conditioning.

Shoulders – 3 sets of 10 repetitions

Back – 3 sets of 10 repetitions

Chest - 3 sets of 10 repetitions

Thighs – 3 sets of 12 repetitions

Triceps – 3 sets of 12 repetitions

Biceps - 3 sets of 12 repetitions

Calves - 3 sets of 20 repetitions

Abdominals – 3 sets of 20-30 crunches

Note : This is a three day workout with 2 rest days in between. You should find a weight for each group that will challenge you yet still allows you to complete the three sets. If you find yourself struggling in the first set with the weight you are lifting SWITCH IMMEDIATELY to a lower weight.

Thoughts: This was especially challenging for me because unlike the other workouts I have been on this involves almost the entire body. I was able to do it but realized that this was almost like cardio because the rest periods between the workouts were recommended as 30-45 seconds. This doesn’t allow for time to chat and joke around in the gym. Your whole body is being asked to participate in this workout and it should be, because in the next week we will attack each muscle group and make each one of them individually stronger.

Have fun with this program because I am. This will work for anyone wanting to kick-start their weight training or reinvigorate a stalled workout routine. Stay tuned over the next couple of weeks for week #2 and week #3’s workouts posted right here on MaXfighting.com.

Thank you to Muscle and Fitness Magazine, amateur champion bodybuilder Charles Penix, and Rich Franklin.

Cung Le Talks About His MMA Debut

Undefeated (16-0) San Shou kickboxing champion Cung Le made his mixed martial arts debut on March 10 as part of the sold out Shamrock vs. Gracie fight card. Le is 1-0 in MMA after defeating his opponent Mike Altman at 3:51 of the first round with a right hand that planted Altman face first on the canvas. MaXfighting talked to Le about his future in MMA.

How does fighting in MMA differ from your past San Shou experiences?

It didn’t go to the ground so it was kind of like San Shou. Those gloves for MMA are no joke at all. There small and a lot of people have been complaining about hurting their hands. After that knockout punch my hands are still pretty sore.

What was your strategy going into the fight? What was your training like?

My training was a lot of stand up, a lot of take down defenses, and a lot of escaping from the bottom. I’ve been doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Garth Taylor for several months, he’s a great instructor, and I go over to AKA [American Kickboxing Academy] and all those guys help out in a big way. I was pretty comfortable whether it stayed standing or if I’m on top or on the bottom.

Do you see your self fighting in any other MMA venues?

Right now I have an exclusive with Scott Coker [CEO of K-1 USA]. For me I love competing, I love to train. I just take it one day at a time, one fight at a time. I’m not looking too far into the future. Right now I’m doing a movie. You can expect me to fight later this year again in another MMA fight. I just fought a couple of days ago and I haven’t even been able to celebrate my win. The following morning I was taking care of my two kids and their handfuls, their two boys and they got my energy. I’m always happy whenever I get a chance to take care of them. So I took care of them for the last three days and then flew up to New York to continue filming this movie.

Talk about his movie, what can fans expect from it?

The film should be released by the summer in the Russian movie market. It’s a Russian movie with American actors. The movie stars David Carradine from Kill Bill, Eric Roberts, Gary Busey, and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. I actually got the lead in this movie. I was coaching the US San Shou team down in Vietnam when I got the call and I flew up 25 hours to the set in Toronto and everyone was like our star is here. I thought I was just going to be doing a big fight scene or something, so it was great feeling to find out that I’m the star of the whole movie. I got lot help from all the other actors on set. It’s not like me standing in the cage and looking across at another man who wants to punch or kick, so it’s like no problem in front of the camera, plus I have over 18 months of acting experience. Life has been really good. I’m taking it one day at a time. I’m just happy to be able to wake up this morning and be alive. I’m just enjoying life right now.

Any one you would like to thank from last weeks bout?

I want to thank Scott Coker for putting me on the card. I would like to thank all the fans for cheering for me because I couldn’t even hear myself. I would like to thank the members of the Vietnamese community who supported me with their flags. One more I’d like to thank you and maXfighting for this interview. Lastly I’d like to thank God for letting me wake up today.

Matt Hughes Comments on UFC 60

UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes this week looked ahead to his fight against UFC legend Royce Gracie at UFC 60, May 27th

“I think it’s a good match up for me. I don’t think he’s as strong on his feet and that’s where I want to keep him, his weakest game”, proclaimed a confident Matt.

The Team Miletich figher dismissed talk of the Gracie’s legendary status effecting his game, “He’s just an opponent on the other side of the Octagon”.

“I grew up watching the UFC, I was a fan but I always thought I could beat him, before I was even training in fighting. I’ve got to respect his ground game but beside that I don’t think he has anything”, Hughes added.

Dustin Hazlette talks defeating a Gracie...

The list of fighters who hold a win over a Gracie, the most famed named in MMA, is short. Add one more: Dustin Hazlette. Recently MaxFighting sat down with Dustin who discussed this victory and his blossoming career.

MF: I know that I can not ask a fighter "how are you feeling about this last victory?" Because it sure
that sad, he is not. But I have to ask it to you, because you dominated a Gracie member in Rhalan. So how are you feeling over this fact?

Dustin Hazlette: I was very excited that I won, but I really wish I would have finished him. I really
thought I had that first triangle locked, but I made a mistake, and he capitalized. It was a tough fight, and I think I earned a lot of respect, which is what I really wanted to walk away from this fight with.

MF: Have you had any special feeling of being the first fighter to score a victory to the Gracie's opponent team?

Dustin Hazlette: You could definitely tell a difference in the morale of our locker room when I
came back in. Everyone was really excited, and had a renewed sense of faith. I am by no means trying to take credit for the performance of the other fighters, but I think at least on a subconscious level my victory helped set the mood.

MF: After the fight against Rhalan what did you have in mind? I meant, you had the feeling of mission complete independent of the final score between the teams?

Dustin Hazlette: I had mixed feelings about the fight. I really like being in competitive, exciting fight, they are fun for everyone, especially the fighters. Any time I walk away from a hard fight I feel a certain sense of accomplishment, like I have really done something with my time. Even better than that is not only the fact that I won, but that I defeated a member of the Gracie family. Still I could not help feeling disappointed that I was unable to finish him, I know he is good, but I hate letting judges decide my fate. I would like to be known as a finisher, someone who finishes all opponents decisively. However there is something to be said about going the distance with a tough guy.

MF: Until that fight you were 2-2 reported fighter, but your real resume was 7-3. Do you think that if you were undefeated you would not be scheduled to fight Rhalan?

Dustin Hazlette: I was surprised that for his first fight they chose someone as experienced as me to fight him. I think they probably would have still had me fight him. I think what they were looking for was someone who was close to his age, that had a reputation as a decent fighter. If Rhalan is anything like I am then he does not want to just beat tomato cans. I think for his first fight he wanted to beat a legit fighter. I am not saying I am the greatest fighter in the world, but I am no tomato can.

MF: The fight was no doubts the match of that night. Do you think you scored a three deal perfectly? I meant, you won your match, you beat a Gracie and you were voted such was the protagonist of the best fight of the night. Am I sure?

Dustin Hazlette: As much as I would have loved a unanimous decision, that call is not mine to make. That is the judges' job. However I do not feel that there was a 30-27 gap like judge Randy Bloom scored it. He had more takedowns than I did, but I had more reversals than he did. He stayed busy with strikes, but they were not hard enough to knock me out, whereas my strikes where more powerful and dangerous, but possibly fewer in number. So it comes down to a tough decision. What types of techniques are worth more points? Which style is more deserving of victory? I guess it just depends on what style you prefer, and two of the judges preferred my style, and one preferred Rhalan's.

MF: In your opinion which was the judge mistake to take a 30-27 to Rhalan?

Dustin Hazlette: The judge who scored the fight for Rhalan was an inexperienced judge. He had not judged a mixed martial art fight before, and as far as I know has never fought MMA before. I could understand him scoring the fight for Rhalan, but not with a gap that large. I think that judges should have to fight before they are allowed to be a judge, and they must judge on amateur shows before they are allowed to judge pro shows. They are making high stakes judgments. For the most part judges do a wonderful job, this is the first time I have had a problems with judging. I feel once is enough to create concern, and call for action.

MF: Did you expect to finish Rhalan in other opportunities besides that already mentioned triangle
choke?

Dustin Hazlette: I honestly thought I would finish him with the triangle choke, I guess that is what I get for thinking [laughs]. One of my first armbar attempts was tight, but he kneed me in the head in an attempt to escape. From then on every time I would try to armbar him I was worried about a knee coming for my head, so I was slightly distracted on those. In jiu-jitsu you will not usually finish your first submission attempt, but I thought I would be able to catch him eventually.

MF: You have a good experience in MMA, so what did you observe of good and bad into the Rhalan's game during your fight?

Dustin Hazlette: If I did not know that he had not fought before going into that fight I would have
thought he was just as experienced as I am. He had heart and good training, but I expected nothing less from a Gracie. I knew going in he would not give up. There were a few things he could work on, but since he already expressed interest in a rematch I will not go into any details.

MF: Even so you sunk some submissions, you had an intense on the feet game, where you connected good punches on Rhalan's face. Did you feel close to knock him out in any opportunity?

Dustin Hazlette: I am my own worst critic, and I felt my striking was sloppy. I have been told that is not the case, but I am still going to do extensive work on my standup just in case. I landed a few good shots, but the only time I thought I had a chance to finish him standing was when I knocked out his mouthpiece. I did not realize I knocked it out, I just saw him stagger back so I charged in, and kept striking.

MF: You are a Jorge Gurgel's student, did you always train with him?

Dustin Hazlette: I trained some traditional martial arts before I started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
The first place I trained bjj was a branch of Jorge's academy in Huntington, WV, and I have been there ever since. I travel up to Jorge's school on the weekends to train, and when I get a break from school I will go stay with him and train as long as I can, but for the most part I train in West Virginia. I started training bjj so that I could fight mma, but when I got there they told me I would have to become at least a blue belt before they would allow me to represent our school. I fell in love with bjj, and completely forgot about mma. Then one day my manager asked me if I wanted to fight mma, and I immediately said yes.

MF: What do you think this fight against Rhalan will bring to you? How do you see your career now?

Dustin Hazlette: I think it will do great things for my marketability as a fighter, but I am not too worried about that. My manager, Dustin Ware, worries about where I will go in the future, all I worry about is being the best fighter I can be, which is how I think it should be. A fighter should not have to worry about politics, and what his future holds, a fighter should worry about being the best fighter he or she can be. Hopefully I will get to fight some great fighters, and take my place as one of the elites of my beloved sport.

MF: Which are your next steps in 2006?

Dustin Hazlette: I will be moving to Ohio for the summer to train at Jorge's main school full time, which should drastically improve my game. I would like to move down there for good, but I don't know if that will be possible at this point. Like I said earlier I have the luxury of not having to worry too much about what my future holds.

MF: Would you like to add anything else?

Dustin Hazlette: I would like to thank everyone at team Jorge Gurgel for all their help, I would not be where I am today without them. I would also like to thank my parents for making all the sacrifices they have so I can train and go to college at the same time. I would also like to thank my sponsors: enemy fight wear, and sinister angel cages. I would like to address all the upcoming fighters out there for a moment. Train hard, be humble, and respectful. All your hard work will pay off in due time. To reap the full benefits of your work you will have to make many sacrifices, but it is well worth it. There is no feeling like struggling for so long, then finally breaking free, and achieving your wildest dreams. Fighting is not something that should be taken lightly, if you are offered a fight, and you do not know if you are ready for a fight, then your probably not. Join me in my quest for immortality in the minds of other mere mortals, and we shall live on long after we are gone.

Let's Talk - IFL and UFC

Bluto:

I'm glad to see the Maxfighting editor now has an easy to find link, with a name no less. Rich seems so ordinary for somebody with so much knowledge of the MMA world however. What about Silverback, Pit Bull, Anaconda, or Tiger Shark? Now those names have some "teeth" to them, or do I mean cheese? While I think such team names are kind of silly, I don't think the new IFL is silly at all. I am quite excited about it actually. So while I wonder pointless things like why use those names instead of Team Rutten, Team Miletich, etc. I do have what I believe to be some more worthy thoughts on the IFL and MMA.

Editor:

I too am a bit puzzled by the use of mascot names rather than using the actual names that these fighters truly represent. Moreover, even though MMA is an individual's sport, it is clear that teams are a big part of things - who does one train with, how effective and helpful are the cornerman, and a host of other things that a team contributes to every fighter.

Bluto:

My biggest question about the IFL is what kind of fighters can we expect? While the coach's are some name brands of MMA, should I expect the fighters in each weight class to be as proficient? I don't know the fighters announced, so what can you tell me about them? I don't know if i want to see guys that lack experience (I get enough of that with a variety of The Ultimate Fighter installments).

Editor:

We have recently announced the team line-ups, and as you indicated, they are not the top names in the business. We all know that the top Miletich fighter at 170 lbs is Matt Hughes. Well, being a UFC marquee fighter he is amidst his individual career and is not in position to get involved in the team scene. This is likely to be the case in most instances, so we will indeed be seeing so-called 'second stringers' from the get-go. But this does not mean we will not be seeing quality. Look at Rory Markham at 170 lbs for team Miletich... he is listed at 7-1 will all wins by KO or submission. He is facing Mike Pyle at 10-1 (also has all wins by KO and submission) who many hold to be the next big thing once he gets his break-through fight. At 155 lbs, we see Bart Palazewski who went 8-1 last year defeating very credible opponents in Kyle Brees, Andrew Chappelle, and Joe Jordan. He is facing Urijah Faber who is 12-1 having just defeated the very respected Cole Escovedo, to capture the WEC title along with his KOTC belt.

This is good stuff and it is only the beginning. At worst, the IFL will be what TUF was supposed to be... finding that undiscovered talent, who has not has the chance to shine on the international stage yet... At best, it will begin to see more established names ease into the team competition along with the inclusion of more teams (who hopefully, will not follow the mascot theme but will use their natural team names - American Top Team, Cesar Gracie Fight team, Team Elite, etc...)

Bluto:

Maxfighting has wet my appetite for more MMA because of the constant smorgasborg offerings that are updated daily. I am amazed at the selection out there but, as mentioned before, financially I can't afford to partake in all there is to offer and become the fat bastard of MMA I would like to. So how do I decide what to watch, what to order, etc? I am most familiar with the UFC because of its exposure. Are there any other quality organizations with affordable exposure I need to know about?

Editor:

This is true, that the PPV load is becoming quite heavy. The Gracie Fighting Challenge was recently aired, Shamrock v. Gracie that just went off in San Jose will also be televised (not clear yet if it will be cable or PPV), and of course, PRIDE and UFC hit PPV pretty regularly. But fear not... It appears that cable television (particularly FSN) is taking notice, and will offer up more MMA on regular TV, including PRIDE and the IFL. I have been predicting that K-1's MMA format called HEROS will also be making it onto ESPN in the not to distant future. So this will help all of us not-so-strong in the pocket book types still get out helping of MMA.

What we need now, is a Friday Night Fights program that has news content that covers all of MMA rather than just one venue (ala UFN, or PRIDE on FSN).

Bluto:

Lastly, what can you tell me about Dana White besides the fact that he's a moron? Does he actually arrange the UFC fights, or does somebody else do it? The UFC was blind sided when Couture beat Liddell in their first fight, and they got clocked again with Penn vs. St. Pierre. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love St. Pierre, but organizationally the Penn/Pierre fight didn't make sense because of the possible outcome that DID come to fruition. The people got cheated in seeing the match they wanted but, more importantly (to the UFC Organization), the UFC cheated themselves. There would have been much more thunder with a Hughes/Penn rematch and then St. Pierre fighting the winner. What happens if Gracie beats Hughes? Now we get a Penn/Hughes fight that lacks a lot of luster. I just don't get it.

Editor:

Well... I wouldn't call White a Moron. I think he works hard and is as at least as intelligent as your average Boxercise instructor. I just believe that he does not think the same way as some other folks when it comes to MMA. The Penn/Hughes rematch to settle the title dispute could have played out better, then having St. Pierre follow up by facing the winner of that for the next title bout certainly had a better flow to it... As is, we missed out on rematch and the question lingers (particularly since there is some controversy regarding the Penn/St. Pierre decision. And... If Gracie beats Hughes (which could happen... since Matt has showed vulnerability to submissions at times - 2 losses to Hallman and of course Penn) then we have a shake up that really leaves us with no story-lines and no clear direction... But a good deal of hype to seel more PPV's since a lot of pre-1996 ban fans will think it was business as usual for the 3x 8-man tournament champion, and noew he "is back".

Let's Talk - Chuck v. ???

Steven

I would like to know if Chuck is going to be allowed to fight some of the pride fighters that were mentioned like Silva, Rua etc. I do not want to watch recycles keep fighting for the title. Babalu is a great fighter, but the fans do not want to watch another rematch, get someone else in. I love the UFC and want the sport to grow and become the most popular fighting events in the world. Also give St.Pierre a title shot. I am surprised he is still with your organization the way he gets screwed. Gracie gets a title shot from out of nowhere but George does not. He should have got a shot after beating Trigg senseless.

Editor:

Well Steven... You are correct that the recycling of fighters for championship bouts does get old. Babalu has actually earned his way back to the top, but your point is taken. This is all a symptom of the UFC's lack of real depth at most of their weight classes, and a symptom of the turf wars and fractured nature of MMA itself. And this last issue leads to this part of your question - will Chuck be "allowed" to fight guys like Silva or Rua???

The answer would seem to be "NO". The UFC is not going to pay guys like Silva, Rua, Rogerio, etc. what they are making in PRIDE (nor should they, because financially, they do not mean that much to the UFC). Realistically, PRIDE wouldn't allow this kind of thing to happen anyway (through exclusive contracts, bigger offers, threats... whatever it takes). Nor will the UFC release Chuck to go to PRIDE again, since he lost to Rampage there, and apparently did not follow the fight strategy that Dana had prepared for him...

This all points to some of the bigger issues that exist in MMA, and the fact that it is just a bunch of little fiefdoms, fighting for control of this market or that fighter, or a even particular shape... Bottom-line (and I feel like a broken record) the UFC is not a sport. It is a promotion. The UFC is not a legit world title. It is a trophy. As such, the issues you are complaining about here are not the problem... they are the symptoms of larger more universal problems that MMA is facing.

The Iceman Undergoes Surgery

Chuck Liddell had surgery performed on the toe that was injured during his training, building up to Liddell/Couture 3. The Iceman had originally decided against the surgery but it was later determined that he would need it to repair the damage. he is wearing a cast just below his knee to his foot, that makes things appear worse than it really is. Chuck thinks he will return to action at least by mid-August or early September. The UFC Light Heavyweight champion informed the crowd at this weekends WEC that he believes he will step into the Octagon in August most probably to face the #1 contender, Renato “Babalu” Sobral.

FORREST PETZ - Gracie FC 1 Interviews Series

Forrest Petz was able to tie-up the Gracie/HammerHouse challenge at 3-3 when he defeated Daniel Moraes in 2:33 of R1 in last March 3rd. We had a chance to speak with the Midwest fighter and get his thoughts on the action.

Takimoto- How did you feel after bringing the score in the Gracies v. Hammer House challenge to 3-3 after your beat Daniel Moraes?

Forrest Petz- It is an honor to compete against such an established group as the Gracies. The feeling it gave me to beat one of their fighters was fantastic.

Takimoto- Were you concerned when Gracie Team opened things by jumping ahead 3-0?

Forrest Petz- To be honest with you I did not really notice that they opened up 3-0 on us. I was so focused on my fight.

Takimoto- Your opponent Moraes never had fought MMA. What did you think about his fight style during the fight?

Forrest Petz- Its true Daniel Moraes had not fought an MMA match before but he was a 4 time World Jiu Jitsu champion, and that sure counts for something. He has tons of competition experience and he is a proven winner. I think he still has some adjustments to make in his game but if he wishes to continue fighting he will do well.

Takimoto- You have a lot of experience in MMA competitions, so what do you think about being matched with a guy holding zero MMA fights opponent?

Forrest Petz- I would not call Daniel a novice. Many people considered me an underdog in this match despite my experience because of Daniel's BJJ championships. They figured that once Daniel got me to the ground it would not last long because of his pedigree in ground combat and the fact that I am more of a standup fighter. I did not feel any more responsibility than usual. I try not to let stuff like that get to me.

Takimoto- The fight went 2:33 into R3. Did you expect Moraes to get exhausted due to his constant attempts to take you down?

Forrest Petz- Obviously, I knew he would try to take me down so I trained to defend the takedown for the entire fight if need be. I did not know if he would get tired but I knew if I was successful in stopping his shot I would catch him with a big punch sooner or later and I would finish him. I also landed some very hard body shots that I know affected him and this probably contributed to his fatigue.

Takimoto- Did you have a moment where you thought you could finish the fight before?

Forrest Petz- Yeah. I almost had him at the end of the second round. I stunned him and was putting a pretty good flurry of punches and knees on him when the bell rang. He was ready to go.

Takimoto- Did Moraes offer you any eminent danger?

Forrest Petz- When he got me down in the first round, he got mount and I was in a pretty dangerous spot. I think that is about the worst place you can be with a BJJ champion. That is where my experience came in handy. I just tried to keep a cool head, hug him tight to me, and bridge and roll when I got the chance. Sometimes you get lucky and things work out. The key to the rest of the fight was to stop his shot. He had a really good shot by the way. I was very lucky to have some good wrestlers to train with. My training partners Jeff Cox and Mike Boyd really make sure my wrestling is up to snuff.

Takimoto- What is your opinion about this Gracie FC's formula of having an event with a team challenge?

Forrest Petz- It is different. It creates some comradery and it can be fun. But when it comes time to fight, it does not matter cause it is just you and your opponent and no one can help you.

Takimoto-The Gracie FC 1 was aired in InDemand PPV. Do you think you can get more spotlights over your career now?

Forrest Petz- I beat Charles "Crazy Horse" Bennet last year on a KOTC pay per view so this was the second time I have gotten to fight on TV. I think because I have heavy hands and KO power I am a pretty exciting fighter most of the time. When people see me in there with a guy who will trade punches with me they will want to see me again.

Takimoto- What can you tell about your team?

Forrest Petz- I train at the Strong Style gym in Cleveland Ohio. My trainer is Marcus Marinelli. It is definitively the best gym around and he's the best coach. My main training partner is Jeff Cox. But we have a slew of tough guys who fight with us. We do a lot of sparring. We also have a good Jiu Jitsu coach named Pablo Castro. Our fight team is going to be formidable in the coming years. Alan Fenn, Vadim Ivanov, Arman Loktev, Frank Nerone and I are all fighting on the upcoming Fightfest April 14th. Mike Boyd and John Soeder are fighting in May. We stay busy.

Takimoto- Yes, about Fightfes t... Your fight is against Dan Hardy. Is this a good deal for you? One fight per month? What's your ideal situation for a fighting scheduled?

Forrest Petz- I would like to stay active if my body is able. One fight every six weeks or so is good for me.

Takimoto- Different than Moraes, Hardy has similar experience as you. What do you expect from Hardy on this fight, do you have a plan for him?

Forrest Petz- Hardy is quite different from Moraes. He is obviously not as good on the ground but he is more of a threat on his feet. That's OK with me because I can let my hands go with a guy like Hardy.

Takimoto- I see you are listed online as 10-2-0. Tell us about your background.

Forrest Petz- Actually my record is 16-2. I would say my hardest fight was when I lost to Josh Neer. I got knotted up, cut and triangled. It was a bad night. I held my own though...despite what I look like in the pictures.

Takimoto- There are two belts on the line in this fight against Hardy. Can you explain this situation?

Forrest Petz- As of yet I do not possess a belt. But my fight with Dan Hardy is for his Cagewarriors 170lb belt and the vacant Fightfest title. I plan on winning and I will defend them against whoever is put in front of me.

Takimoto- How do you see your career after this fight against Hardy?

Forrest Petz- I do not plan too far in advance because I like to take it one fight at a time. But things are definitively moving up.

Takimoto- Any final message to the maXfighting.com's readers?

Forrest Petz- Go to betonfighting.com if you like to gamble on this stuff.

Matt Lindland vs. Mike Van Arsdale Equals Fireworks in California

Two respected UFC veterans and world class wrestlers in Mike Van Arnsdale and Matt "The Law" Lindland will be facing each other on April 29th, most likely at 205 lbs. This would give Van Arnsdale a size advantage over Matt Lindland who usually fights at 185 lbs. This one will be clearly be decided by whose wrestling is better, and who comes out to establish himself quicker as the more aggressive fighter. Neither one of these fighters has great standup but don’t look for this to be a stand up war. With a World Cup Champion like Van Arsdale in the cage along with an Olympic silver medalist like Lindland, this one has intense ground and pound action written all over it.

Here’s what Raze has released about the event:

On April 29th UFC Veterans Matt Lindland and Mike Van Arsdale will fight in front of some lucky fans at Raze’s MMA Fight Night. The founders of two of America’s longest running MMA shows, Iowa based Extreme Challenge and Hawaii based Icon Sport (formerly Super Brawl), have come together to bring San Diego it’s first World Class MMA show. Raze MMA Fight Night will invade the IPayone center headlined by two of the biggest names in Mixed Martial Arts.

Tickets will be available at the IPayOne center box office and all Ticketmaster locations. On sale date to be announced very shortly for this event.

MATT LINDLAND - Gracie FC 1 Interviews Series

Anyone who expected to see Matt Lindland stalling on the ground against a BJJ blackbelt like Fabio Leopoldo, were surprised by how things played out. To control all three rounds and finish the match by a rear-naked-choke was an amazing turn of events for the former Olympian:

"That was great, I am glad I could help the team out" stated "The Law."

The score between the teams was tied-up at 3-3 when Lindland came in to face Leopoldo. The focus to overcome the man across the ring was intensified and Lindland tells us how he managed that.

"I was not really thinking about the teams score. I did not think about having any anxiety"

Comparing the resumes of these two fighters someone may have presumed that, the keys for Matt's victory was due to the experience disparity. Lindland has been competing in MMA since in 1997, while Fabio was only a child at that time. But that tough kid left some impressions with the former UFC middleweight champion

"I just knew that he was a black-belt and a great Jiu Jitsu guy- a top Gracie student. He was a tough guy did not want to quit. I went it to the fight with the plan of beating his ass"

When asked if there was any special feeling in defeating a respected Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, Lindland said this:

"Not really every fight has it own challenges."

Your last two victories were over Nino "Elvis" Schembri [Cage Rage 14] and now Leopoldo, which should bring an end to the continuous criticisms about your fight game. But up until now, how did you feel about people who insisted on talking down about you skills and style of fighting?

"People are going to say what they want and that is not going to change. Some fans are going to like you and some are going to hate you"

For MMA overall, this is an interesting time... there is the TUF series, Gracie FC, Shamrock/Gracie, and now the up-coming IFL promotion. The IFL is a new format for MMA with teams facing each other much like what the Gracie/HammerHouse challenge was intended to be. What do you think about this direction for the MMA?

"Well, as for this event I was in, I am not really sure how the whole challenge came about but I was happy to compete and glad to be a part of the event. I think Ryan [Gracie - who played part in arranging the challenge] has a bad attitude and I so want to fight Gracies."

With all the rumors circulating around, Matt preferred not to answer questions about his immediate future in MMA. So he finished by with this:

"I apologize, things are changing fast and I answered what I can for now, the rest will have to wait"

PULVER SIGNS WITH IFL

The International Fight League is proud to announce that Lightweight World Champion Jens “Little Evil” Pulver will fight Cole “Apache Kid” Escovedo in a special Super Fight on April 29th at the Trump Taj Mahal Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

IFL management confirmed Escovedo has in fact been signed to face Pulver at the Inaugural “Legends” Event and is reportedly excited about the opportunity to defeat the more experienced lightweight.

Jens “Little Evil” Pulver touts a professional mixed martial arts record of 19-6-1. Cole “Apache Kid” Escovedo currently holds an impressive record of 11-1 and is expecting to face Pulver on April 29th with 12 wins to his credit, after his main event battle tonight against Urijah Faber on the WEC 19 “Undisputed” fight card in Lemoore, California.

WILD NIGHT OF KO'S IN WEC

The WEC sold out for the 18th time in 20 shows this weekend in Lemoore California. In one of the two main events, challenger Urijah Faber defeated WEC Champion Cole Escovedo by corner/doctor stoppage at the end of Round 2. Escovedo had a horrible cut on his hair line and fought in a mask of blood for much of Round 2 and the doctor's would not let him continue into a Round 3.

A very physical battle saw both fighters cut and bleeding at one point of the first round. Faber used vicious elbows to cut open the champ early on in Round 1. Escovedo countered by sweeping Faber at one point and Escovedo landed some great shots that cut Faber under his right eye.

Faber though was able to sweep Escovedo later in Round 1 and pounded vicious elbows to the head of Escovedo that split open the champ at the end of the round. After a few unsuccessful triangle attempts, Escovedo could not withstand the ground n pound game of Faber and after Round 2, the champ could not continue because of the lengthy cut inflicted by Faber. Urijah Faber is the new WEC 145lb. Champion.

In the other co-main event, it was Hermes Franca, the challenger, defeating WEC champion Gabe Ruediger by knockout at just :31 seconds into the fight. Franca used his trademark right hand to knock down Ruediger and then Franca pounced on the chapmion and took him out with more strikes in just :31 seconds of the fight to become the new WEC Light Weight Champion.

In the shocker of the night, Lodune Sincaid took a page out of his Ultimate Fighter season 1 teammate, Stephan Bonnar's book. Sincaid shot in for takedown after takedown and took down James Irvin for three rounds. Sincade used a great ground n pound game to keep Irvin on the defensive the entire fight. Irvin tried to rally late in the third round, but came up short as Sincaid pulled off the upset over Irvin by unanimous decision.

In another surprise of the night Tiki dominated Pat Healy for a couple of rounds, but Tiki's shoulder literally popped out of the socket when he threw a punch in the third round. Tiki actually sustained the shoulder injury back when he fought in the UFC against Sean Sherk and has had to deal with the same injury his entire career.

Tiki showed tremendous stand up as he had Healy on the ropes the entire fight. Tiki was cruising through the fight but when he tried to throw a left hand his shoulder popped out of socket and he could not continue to fight. The luck or the Irish was with Pat Healy who wins at the :25 second mark of Round 3 due to a dislocated shoulder by Tiki. Pat's brother Ryan was also on the card and he didn't need any "luck" as Ryan Healy defeated Phillip Wyman by rear naked choke at 3:18 of Rd. 1

In the most vicious knockout in WEC history, Razor Rob McCullough landed a punch right on the chin of the very popular Olaf. The shot knocked out Olaf as the mouth piece went flying across the cage on the impact of the punch. Olaf woke up when he hit the ground, only to be pumpled by five consecutive right hands by McCullough that all landed on the chin of Olaf, knocking him out again and breaking his jaw. McCullough wins by vicious KO at :12 into Round 2.

Tim McKenzie was the "Wrecking Machine" against Doug "The Rhino" Marshall on Friday Night. McKenzie ground n pounded his way to victory as he took down the man who once fought at 240 pounds, but the slimmed down 195 pound Rhino did not look as strong as McKenzie took down Marshall and landed some monster right hands that split open Marshall as McKenzie finished the fight at 3:55 of Round 1.

In other action it was Jake O'Brian making history getting the fastest knock out ever as he took out Jay White at just :14 seconds of Round 1.

Chuck Liddell protege Antonio Banuelos of the Pit was dominant as he defeated James Cottrell by unanimous decision.

Lion's Den fighter Joseph Martin took the fight on just 24 hours notice and showed a lot of heart as he defeated Tony Alanis by heel hook at 2:26 of Rd. 2

- Kenny Ento defeated Jimmy Dexter by Arm Bar at 1:20 of Rd. 1

Jeff Monson & James Thompson in Car Accident

WCFC Press Release -- As many of you are aware James Thompson and Jeff Monson (ATT) were due to fight on the exciting WCFC event in Manchester on March the 18th. Due to injury both fighters will now have to pull out of their respective matches. The circumstances surrounding this unfortunate turn of events is as follows. Whilst on our way to do some TV interviews in Manchester Jeff, James and I were involved in a serious car crash. Some thieves in a stolen vehicle were being chased by the police and hit us causing significant damage to our car and its occupants. Travelling the wrong way down a duel carriage way, the stolen vehicle lost control and hit us at considerable speed, writing off our vehicle and causing all of the occupants some kind of trauma related injury. Regrettably the injuries that both James and Jeff sustained will now preclude them from fighting in Manchester on the March the 18th card at “No Guts No Glory”.

Both fighters are deeply upset that they won’t be able to fight and feel embittered that they will now suffer because of the reckless and criminal actions of some joy riding idiots. However what has taken place is one of those unfortunate incidents that no one could have predicted or avoided. Consequently I would like to offer a sincere apology on behalf of both fighters, both of whom are devastated that they are indirectly letting the fans down. It is hoped, upon recovery, that they will be able to fight on a future WCFC card, and bring to the European fight scene their unique brand of fighting. James will still be attending the event, to support the WCFC, but Jeff unfortunately has had to return to the US for treatment. The only comfort we can take from this misfortune is that the WCFC team has found some exciting replacements. Consequently the show will still have all of the ingredients to make this a memorable and thrilling event of fight action.
