Randy Couture, forever the embodiment of integrity
By Al Yu

“I’m retiring tonight. This is it for me. I feel blessed to have been able to come in here and compete.” – Randy Couture

Randy ‘The Natural’ Couture announced his retirement from the sport of Mixed Martial Arts at UFC 57 after suffering second loss to Chuck Liddell. It was an exciting evening as the final part of their trilogy was finally complete. As fan’s anticipation peaked, the excitement culminated into sadness when the former UFC champion made the announcement that ended all speculation. Rather than continuing to defy father time and potentially harm his legacy, Couture made a personal decision that is sometimes considered rare in the fight business, a defining admission of self accomplishment. At 42 years old, Couture left behind an accomplished nine year career and a lasting impact on the UFC.

Randy Couture made his MMA debut at UFC 13, defeating Tony Halme and Steven Graham in a small heavyweight tournament. At UFC 15, Couture shocked many MMA fans and critics as he outclassed the favored Vitor Belfort. After the domination of the much younger ‘Phenom’, Randy earned a shot for the UFC heavyweight title against Maurice Smith. Couture would decision Smith and attain his first defining moment, becoming a UFC Heavyweight Champion. Unfortunately, Couture would not get the opportunity to defend his belt due to disputes with SEG. After a three year absence, Couture would return to face Kevin Randleman at UFC 28. Once again, Couture would be crowned the UFC Heavyweight Champion as he outworked the younger Randleman to a TKO victory. The new champion would go on to retain his title against Pedro Rizzo two times. In 2002, Randy would suffer back-to-back stoppage losses to Josh Barnett and Ricco Rodriguez.

Realizing his size limitations, Couture would drop down to a more natural weight and face up-and-coming light heavyweight Chuck ‘The Iceman’ Liddell for the interim title. Known for his striking and great takedown defense, the title seemed to be Liddell’s for the taking. Overcoming the odds and defying many critics again, Couture would dominate ‘The Iceman’ in stunning fashion en route to a third round TKO victory. Couture would become the first fighter in UFC history to hold a championship belt in two different weight divisions, a feat that still has yet to be matched today. ‘The Natural’ would further solidify his place in the UFC by totally dominating Tito Ortiz at UFC 44. Next, two consecutive fights with Vitor Belfort would yield an abrupt loss (due to a cut) and TKO victory for Couture. At UFC 52, Chuck Liddell would get his revenge, becoming the first man to ever knockout Couture. The loss signified a changing of the guard and finally showed signs of Randy’s age. A rebound victory over Mike Van Arsdale at UFC 54 would setup a rubber match with Liddell at UFC 57, a historical night that will always be remembered.

Though his fight career has officially ended, Randy Couture will always be involved in the MMA world. Couture's career and legacy will inspire many fighters who have the potential of becoming future champions. In addition to inspiring fighters, Randy will continue oversee Sportfight, a smaller MMA organization he started with co-founder and teammate, Matt Lindland. The opportunities are plentiful for one of the most respected men in MMA.

Randy Couture is the embodiment of integrity and respect. As one of the most humble and civil fighters in MMA, ‘The Natural’ will be greatly missed by all. The MMA community will always remember his show of sportsmanship and class, as well as his memorable and exciting fights. He defied father time for as long as he could. His legacy will never be forgotten and his positive persona will model a new generation of fighters. Farewell to Randy Couture the fighter and welcome Randy Couture, the man and a legend.

Maurício Shogun: Back to Brazil
By Eduardo Ferreira

Elected the best athlete of the year, Mauricio Shogun began the year traveling to the U.S. with his brother Murilo Ninja, for a series of seminars. In addition to the seminars Shogun and Ninja signed autographs, watched Rumble on the Rock in Hawaii and encountered an enormous amount of fans in the U.S. "Everybody treated us very well there, we did not expect so much warmth!" said Shogun, who is in Brazil training for his first challenge of 2006 against the American Mark Coleman. Check in this exclusive interview given by Shogun for the TATAME.com. The GP middleweight champignon tells us about his trip with his brother to the U.S. He talks about his future match with Coleman and the GP Open weight, which is this year's fresh news.

How was this time in U.S. for you and your brother?

Everything was great, it worked out well! I was impressed with the warmth of the American fans. We gave 8 or 9 seminars and they were all booked out. There were seminars where they didn't allow more people to come in due to the lack of space. I received two trophies one from MMA Weekly and the other from Sherdog for best athlete of 2005.It was all really good! From there we went to Hawaii to watch Rumble on the Rock. We loved the event! Everyone treated us really well there; we didn't expect so much affection.

How was the autograph session in California?

We gave autographs in an Electronics shop. Pedro Rizzo , Dan Henderson, my brother and I .There were more than 700 hundred people asking for autographs. The line went around the corner. Everything was really cool! After that my brother and I went to a Fox channel program along with a Baseball player. It was very funny, the guy put the pads for my brother to hit and when it was his turn to hit my brother put them up for him to hit and he hit all uncoordinated (hard laugh).

You will face Mark Coleman in Pride 31. Like you he won the Pride GP in the year 2000. What do you expect from this fight?

For sure Coleman is really good. He is a tough opponent and very strong we can only see what will happen in the fight. A fight is always a surprise. nevertheless everything will work out fine in God's will. Everyone asks me how this fight will end? But this is something we can only know at the fight in the ring. It doesn't matter how I win I just hope I win.

Coleman is heavier than you. Would this be a pre announcement of your way to a heavier class?

No. I don't wish to go up to heavyweight now, only in about two years. But if my team prefers differently, we will talk and see what is best for all.

Why do you think the Japanese matched this fight? Do you think they want you in the GP Open weight?

It is their choice, but I also have to see mine, right? The Japanese love this match up between the big guy and the small guy. But, I have only seen heavier guys being announced in this GP. There is nothing decided yet about the GP, we are studying it yet. At the moment I am only focused on my fight against Coleman.

Terrell's Return

David Terrell is ready to fight again and has officially petitioned the UFC for a fight in May. After taking some time off to recover from a torn ligament on his elbow, David is now healed up and raring to go. UFC matchmaker, Joe Silva, is taking a hard look at the May card and mulling over the idea. We'll have more as it comes in.

Pride: Sakakibara confirms Minotauro

The card of Pride 31 is almost done. But if BTT fans were worried about Rodrigo Minotauro's absence of the show, there is no need to worry. During the press conference, on last day 6, Pride organization announced more four matches. Nobuyuki Sakakibara - president of the Dream Stage Entertainment - didn't forget Nogueira.

- We will have more one or two fights that will have the level to be between the main ones of the card. I hope to announce them in the next days and our focus will be in Nogueira (as Rodrigo is knew in Japan) - said Sakakibara.

He guarantees he has been working on Minotauro's adversary and said it may be a Japanese one. One of the possibilities is Kazuyuki Fujita, who hasn't gotten any relation with any event. " May be a Japanese, we are working in the last details. Fujita is a freelancer and if he wants to fight in the Pride, I think that we have a place for him. I just think that it is a little bit complicated he fights in February", saying that probably Fujita can be in the first round of the Pride Openweight, in May.

Lawmakers kill proposal to outlaw extreme combat
By Peter Boylan
Advertiser Staff Writer

Bolstered by testimony from more than a dozen mixed-martial arts fighters, fans and promoters, state lawmakers voted unanimously yesterday to kill a bill that would outlaw extreme combat in Hawai'i.

Not one person at yesterday's hearing appeared to support House Bill 1963, which would have outlawed extreme combat bouts like "Rumble on the Rock," "K1" and "Ultimate Fighting Championships."

"Hawai'i has a reputation for fighting. People come out and want to prove how tough they are," testified Michael Onzuka, who along with his fraternal twin, Christopher, runs Onzuka.com, a site for mixed-martial arts fan information and news. "(If you ban this sport), people will go back to testing themselves on the street."

Instead, fighter after fan after promoter sat before the House Committee on Tourism and Culture and testified that mixed-martial arts is safe but needs regulation.

Another House bill up for consideration, HB 3223, seeks to add two positions to the Hawai'i State Boxing Commission and task them with regulating mixed-martial arts. That vote is expected to come Tuesday.

HB 3223 is a step in the right direction, proponents of the sport say, but it doesn't go far enough.

"We at Icon Sport respect the intended goal of this bill, but HB 3223 fails to appropriately prescribe the best method of regulation," said T. Jay Thompson, founder and president of Icon Sport and its parent company, Future Fight Productions. "Although boxing and mixed-martial arts may appear similar, they are vastly different. In order to preserve the safety of the athletes and the integrity of the sport, it is imperative that all members of the regulatory board have the knowledge and experience required to understand the complex techniques and risks associated with mixed-martial arts."

Jo Ann Uchida, complaints and enforcement officer for RICO, the enforcement arm of the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, said that while concerns for fighters' safety linger, a total ban on all forms of mixed-martial arts and extreme combat would be "problematic."

Under HB 1963, extreme combat bouts that represent an unusually high risk of bodily injury or death would be outlawed as they had been before an amended version of the law went into effect last year. Uchida has said the clause makes enforcing the ban or regulating exemptions very difficult because proving the risk is next to impossible unless someone dies.

Testimony before the committee yesterday represented an array of views, all of them in favor of preserving the sport. Tickets to fights range from $30 to $350, and some events have drawn more than 7,000 people. Icon Sport earned more than $4 million in gross revenue in fiscal 2005 and has held more than 500 bouts in the state since 1996, according to Thompson.

The sport "is a tremendous potential tax base here" and the promoters "want to be regulated," said Chuck Williams, judge and chairman of the convention committee for the World Boxing Council.

Others, including a state deputy sheriff, a former police officer and a convicted felon offered emotional, sometimes tearful testimony about how the sport has transformed their lives.

Nine years ago fighter Ronald Juhn, now 35 and a sheetmetal worker, was just getting out of jail for assault and was looking to leave a life of drug abuse and violence behind.

"My father is incarcerated, he's still incarcerated, and I wanted to turn the pattern and do something right for my kids," said Juhn, a Salt Lake resident. "I knew I had to quit everything I was doing to get to the top level of competition."

State Commission Sought for Mixed Martial Arts Bouts
Feb 7, 2006, 07:27 PM
Commission Needed to Draw Top Mixed Martial Arts Events

(KHNL) Professional mixed martial arts fights have a reputation for violent combat, but fighters say they've seen their sport go mainstream in recent years.

"There's many times people perceive it as a brute sport," said professional fighter Molly Helsel. "What you find in actuality is a bunch of very trained, very disciplined, elite athletes."

Tuesday a group of fighters entered the political arena of the State Capitol to fight for the future of their sport. They watched as state lawmakers killed a bill banning no rules combat. Instead, lawmakers will look at using a state agency to officially sanction bouts.

"We want to be protected," Helsel said. "We want to make sure that there's blood tests being done, people are verified fighters that are stepping in the ring."

Mixed martial arts promoter Icon Sport brought in $4 million in total revenues last year. Promoters say with the right kind of regulation, they could be making even more.

With state regulation, supporters say Hawaii could attract interest from martial artists and fight promoters from across the country.

"There's a lot of promoters that won't even be involved in state that doesn't have regulations," Helsel said.

Still, competitors don't want regulation to constrain a sport with a tradition of freestyle fighting.

"It's a good thing the state wants to regulate it," said fighter John Kukahiko. "We need a little bit more rules, not too much more."

No KO For Ultimate Fighting

No KO For Ultimate Fighting
Brooks Baehr - bbaehr@kgmb9.com

A bill to outlaw ultimate fighting, or mixed martial arts, in Hawaii was knocked out by state lawmakers Tuesday.

The House Committee on Tourism and Culture did not move the bill out of committee for further consideration. However, that same committee is still considering a proposal to create a state commission to regulate ultimate fighting.

House Bill 3223 would change the name of the State Boxing Commission to the State Athletic Commission. That commission would then be responsible for governing both boxing and ultimate fighting.

Several ultimate fighters testified before the committee. They support the idea of a governing entity, but do not want to be governed by the same body that oversees boxing.

The committee is scheduled to resume discussion on the matter Tuesday, February 14.

Diaz vs. Riggs 2: The Real Story?

Some time after the lights had faded and the crowd had disappeared from UFC 57, and after Randy had given his final farewell, and Chuck Liddell had already left to celebrate his Championship victory... another fight occurred, albeit an unscheduled one.

After a fight injured UFC fighters are taken to a hospital to get examined for any injuries or potentially life threatening conditions existing from the damage sustained from a bout in the octagon. Apparently, Joe Riggs and Nick Diaz were both present at the hospital at the same time and Joe had a few choice words for Nick. From all accounts Nick was still upset about his decision loss to Riggs and was very vocal about it when they saw each other. Riggs fired back verbally and then the details get alittle fuzzy.

According to reports, Joe Riggs was knocked out and MOST accounts say Diaz sucker punched him. A few supposed witnesses (and only a few) say it was actually a face to face assault. Either way, Nick was apparently taken away by the police for his trouble according to sources close to maXfighting. When asked about this outburst by Diaz, his instructor Cesar Gracie had this to say:

"As far as the hospital incident I will say that there is a spin to make Diaz look like he sucker punched Riggs in the hospital. Diaz doesn't operate like that. He talks trash and will fight you, win or lose, but it's to your face like a man. They squared off and Diaz dropped him. I wish it would have happened in the octagon and not in the hospital. Anyways both guys fought hard and that's the way it goes."

Only time will tell what really happened that night, but the fight that mattered was won by Joe Riggs in the Octagon at UFC 57 by unanimous decision. MaXfighting will have more on this story as information becomes available.

Let's Talk - Fans Write In

Ryan Paules:

I think with Randy Couture retiring, he should replace Dana White as the "boss" on any future 'The Ultimate Fighter' seasons. Dana was way too much of a presence in TUF2, and he's in danger of becoming a Vince McMahon type presence (or worse, a Stephanie McMahon). editors note: Doh!

He's not a "tough guy" so all his motivational speeches come across as pretty bogus. Randy, though, has unbelievable credibility, plus great motivational abilities. With him as the head honcho, running the show and making the key decisions on how the 2 teams interact, I think the show would be a lot better.

Editor:

Ryan, thanks for the write in. First, I think it would indeed be a sensational idea to use Randy in this capacity (or something of this measure). A good deal of time and effort (and money no doubt) has been invested in Randy in the past few years to build him into a solid product for the company. It would be a shrewd business move to capitolize on his name recognition to utilize him in some sort of on screen capacity... Coordinator for TUF would be great to get him in front TV audiences every week, but I fear that it would just be for appearances. One thing we have learned about "Reality TV" is that the producers evoke a great deal of control to guide circumstances, and it is unlikely that Randy would suddenly be given authority over the shows progress.

Additionally, I am under the impression that Mr. White enjoys his role on the show and is not likely to relinquish his version of "The Donald".

I think that Randy would be the ULTIMATE (pun intended) color commentator for the production. He would be the George Foreman analog for the UFC broadcast, providing championship level experience and understanding of the game, and a good natured serious appraisal of the action (Just as Foreman on HBO boxing broadcasts).

However, we need to see what Randy has in mind for his future before we go concocting jobs for him. He has a school to run, a team to train, a promotion of his own to develop, and no doubt some plans for a vacation. Whatever the next step for Randy is, maXfighting and this editor wish him the best of luck, and we want to say thanks for the memories.

Friends will make a tribute to Carlson

Master Carlson Gracie body was cremated on last Saturday (4), in Chicago, in United States. But his friends want to do an honorable tribute in Brazil. They will pray in mass during the seventh day of his death. According Amury Bitetti, this will be a great opportunity to gather together all the friends and pupils of Carlson. 'We don't know when his ashes come to Rio, but this mass will be the first tribute to him," said Amaury. The mass takes place this Wednesday and starts at 7pm at Praça Serzedelo Correia (Rua Hilário de Gouveia), in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro.

K-1 World MAX Japan, SATO is CHAMP

TOKYO, February 4, 2006 -- Scarcely a week after his 25th birthday, former All-Japan Boxing Welterweight Champion Yoshihiro Sato picked up a present well worth waiting for -- the K-1 Max Japan Belt. Sato looked smart dispatching three challengers en route to victory tonight at the Saitama Super Arena just north of Tokyo.

To kick off the Year of the Dog, K-1 unleashed 14 World Max fighters in an event that included the Japan Max Tournament and a trio of Superfights. The World Max Class has a weight limit of 70kg/154lbs. All bouts were contested under K-1 Rules, 3Min x 3R with a possible tiebreaker round, two in the final.

The first tournament quarterfinal pitted the experienced Seidokaikan fighter Kazuya Yasuhiro, an early favorite, against kickboxer Hayato. Yasuhiro looked confident from the start, connecting with good straight punches and snapping in the low kicks and knees while displaying superior evasions to take control.

But Hayato burst to life in the second, getting through with a brutal left hook to stun Yasuhiro, who was only barely able to ride out the round. In the third, Hayato kept taking the fight to his opponent, snapping Yasuhiro's noggin back with a right uppercut to make the judges' job easy. An upset win by unanimous decision.

Bad boy boxer Tatsuji made his K-1 debut against Yuya Yamamoto, who at just 21 tears of age was the youngest fighter in the tournament.

Yamamoto, wearing a pink half-slip draped over his trunks, ate a whole lot of leather in the first as Tatsuji got antagonistic with the fists. In the second, Yamamoto hardly threw a punch, and was cautioned for repeatedly clinching. After Tsuji unloaded a barrage of unanswered blows, the referee stepped in and called for a doctor check. It was determined that Yamamoto had dislocated his right shoulder, and the bout was stopped even as an intrepid Yamamoto loudly protested that he wanted to continue.

The third bout saw the mean-looking Akira Ohigashi take Ryuki Ueyama, an amateur wrestler making his K-1 debut.

The fancy Ueyama brought flipping and spinning backhand punches and pranced in a manner suggesting Genki Sudo. Ohigashi meanwhile stuck to the basics -- guard high, tossing the jab and pumping in body blows when the distance closed. In the second, Ueyama used the low and front kicks and knees to effect, and was able to duck, deke or retreat whenever the fists came.

Ohigashi seemed frustrated by his slippery opponent, and Ueyama got the knee up from the clinch in the third to open a cut over his opponent's right eye, prompting a doctor check. The fight continued, but Ohigashi couldn't connect, couldn't get back into it, and Ueyama took the win by unanimous decision.

A couple of powerful kickers, Yoshihiro Sato and Akeomi Nitta, mixed it up in the last of the quarterfinals. The first round was fast and about even, the fighters trading low kicks, Nitta good with an uppercut, Sato solid with a knee to the midsection.

Throughout, Sato worked the knees with superior kill, and this was to prove the difference. Both fighters put punches through, but neither did serious damage with either the fists or the low kicks. A good, close fight that went to Sato by judges' decision.

And so Tatsuji took on Hayato in the first semifinal. The spunky Tatsuji outworked his opponent here, connecting with a high kick and a right straight in the first. Again in the second Tatsuji was aggressive, always moving in with body blows, answering Hayato's attacks with stinging low kicks.

The final round was fast and furious, a desperate Hayato stepping in to throw the right, Tatsuji again punishing with the body blows and low kicks. Tatsuji put his opponent off balance with a low kick late in the round, then quickly followed up with a hard right to score a down. An impressive performance to earn Tatsuji a well-deserved place in the final.

The second semi pitted Ueyama against Sato. Ueyama's dancing-out-of-harm's-way tactic wasn't working here, as an aggressive Sato did an excellent job of cutting off the ring. Both fighters got low kicks in, but Sato's had more on them. By the end of the first Ueyama was limping and wincing in pain. During the break the ringside doctor stepped up to have a look, and decided to stop the fight, putting Sato into the final.

Sato and Tatsuji made a war of the final. The height differential (Sato stands 185cm/6'1"; Tatsuji but 174cm/5'9") meant that Tatsuji had to get past Sato's jab and low kicks in order to get anything going. This he did surprisingly well in the first -- getting in on Sato with two good left straight punches and a right that was the best strike of the round. Sato had the low kicks, but when the pair went toe-to-toe, which they did for a good long while, it was Tatsuji who got the better of the exchanges.

But the second evidenced Sato's technical prowess, as the fighter began to throw the knee whenever Tatsuji stepped forward. Midway through, a knee to the midsection dropped Tatsuji, and the fighter was lucky to have this ruled a slip. Sato rattled his opponent with a right hook, and was now taking control of the fight. A never-say-die Tatsuji strove to work the punches, and while you had to admire his gutsy effort, the tide had turned.

A worn out Tatsuji took a truckload of punishment in the third -- more knees, a high kick and a right hook, but to his credit never went down. A unanimous decision for Sato to cap an exciting night of action.

With his tournament victory, Sato earns five million yen and a spot at this April's World Max Final Elimination -- a one-match tournament which will determine the World Max '06 Final Eight.

"My technique got me through," said Sato post-tournament. "I feel no pressure for the April tournament, the only adjustment has been familiarizing myself with the K-1 rules. In April, I would want to fight Buakaw, as I think he is the strongest Max fighter out there!"

Asked what he planned to do with his prize money, Sato said he would use it to repay his student loan.

Overall, a good tournament that showcased some emerging talent. In the hard-fought reserve bout, Yasuhito Shirasu edged Hakuto by judges' decision.

In Superfights on the card:

The Main Event had 2003 World Max Champion Masato of Japan step in against Ian Schaffa of Australia. Masato fired in more than a dozen hard low kicks in the first, while Schaffa seemed unsure how to get in with his punches, attempting instead (and missing with) a spinning back kick.

It was more of the same in the second. Although Schaffa's ambitious flip kick made partial contact this time and he got a brief volley of punches through, Masato had the better stuff with his low kicks, and unloaded some good punches on Schaffa in the corner.

Dominating in every aspect of the bout, Masato gave the partisan crowd plenty to cheer about, showing good technical skill and flying in with a knee in the third. Schaffa missed with his big hooks and winced when he caught Masato's kicks on the counter. It was clear that although Schaffa has speed and power, as a jiu-jitsu man fighting one of the world's best kickboxers under K-1 rules, he was out of his league. A unanimous decision for Masato.

"I am happy with the result," said Masato afterwards, "although I have to say I would have preferred to win by KO! In any case, I'll keep working and win again in April, just you wait and see!"

Full-on fighting machine Remigijus Morkevicius of Lithuania had won both his K-1 bouts coming into his Superfight against Japanese fighter Shingo Garyu, a 30 year-old J-Net Welterweight Champion making his K-1 debut. Garyu got a laugh at the pre-event press conference by announcing, "I want to win this fight because I really really want to become famous!"

There's an adage -- "Be careful what you wish for, you might get it." Somewhat ironically, Garyu did indeed become famous tonight: His name will go into the record books on the wrong end of the quickest-ever KO in World Max history.

At the bell, Morkevicius snapped in a low kick that turned Garyu round. Straightaway, Morkevicius leapt up with a flying knee to KO the Japanese fighter. The whole thing took eight seconds.

Buakaw Por Pramuk of Thailand, who won the Max Final in 2004 and was runner-up last year, is one of the world's best kickers. In the card's third Superfight, he tested his skills against Mike Zambidis, a squat Greek slugger who had won three of his last four K-1 bouts by KO.

After a slow start, Zambidis got a high kick up that glanced off Buakaw's head. Buakaw was quick with his legwork, but Zambidis' defenses were sound. In the second, Buakaw tossed in more low kicks to control the distance, and went to the clinch-and-throw when Zambidis attempted to close with the fists. Zambidis did get a body blow through on a counter, but that was about it.

The third saw more body blows from Zambidis, which Buakaw coolly answered with middle kicks. The Greek launched several roundhouse rights, but Buakaw always got beyond the arc then darted back in with the magically lethal legs. The skill was incredible, as Buakaw was able to both position and punish his opponent with his legwork. Buakaw simply landed more strikes, and took a unanimous decision.

The K-1 World Max Japan '06 Tournament attracted a sellout crowd of 13,927 to the Saitama Super Arena. The event was same-day broadcast in Japan on the TBS Network -- in other locations check with local broadcasters for time-delay scheduling. As always check the K-1 Official Website (www.k-1.co.jp) for complete coverage.

Smokin Joe Talks About the UFC

Looking beyond the light heavyweight title fight for U.F.C 57 (Liddell/Couture), Zuffa gives us a card full of duds. Instead of adding a 9th fight they should be cutting bum contracts. Its no wonder they can't afford to bring Quinton Jackson to the U.F.C or bring back Josh Barnett when their wasting time with hacks like Justin Eilers, who might get seriously hurt against an up and comer like Brandon Vera. And how about Elvis Sinosic, how many fights does this guy have to lose before Zuffa cuts him for good? (Ortiz, Tanner, Griffin and in 2 weeks we'll add Sakara to that long list.)

Its amazing how Pride adds great heavyweights like Sergei Kharitonov, Fabricio Werdum, K1 Champion's Semmy Schilt and Mark Hunt, not to mention signing a then unknown Fedor Emelianenko and the U.F.C are putting out garbage like Gilbert Aldana and Gabrielle Gonzaga, who's suppose to be back in April.

Other than the main event the only fight worth watching is the Babalu Sobral/Van Arsdale fight. Only god knows why Zuffa have signed Kristof Midoux for March a 5-5 fighter while Rico Rodriguez a winner of almost 20 fights is passed bye.

Pride 31 - Barnett's back for blood

Editor:

Hello Joe, always a pleasure. OK... I often agree with you points of view and thoughts on the topics you write in about, but now always. The same can be said about todays write-in. I do agree with some of your points, but I also think that you are missing something.

Do you really think that the UFC cannot afford better fighters than those they choose to field??? Do you think they cannot afford Rampage or Barnett (and have you seen Rodriguez recently)??? It seems they can afford these guys with fair ease... They could even afford the contracts that Pulver, Bustamante, Penn, Ortiz, and Couture (in the past) were asking for when they left the organization. But why... I ask why should they pay more than they have to when a card costing bare bones will still get the buy-rates that makes Zuffa smile??? The UFC brass felt that paying Pulver and Bustmante more when they were champs would not have made the UFC more money, and the same line of thinking applies today regarding 'name' fighters who are nameless in the Octagon.

Really, why shell out for 4, 5 or 6 top names, when a solid headliner and a bunch of filler will brig in the fans just the same??? What kind of reputation do Rampage and Barnett have with the wider fans base anyway??? We have already established that the TUF guys have earned a place as the UFC staple, teammates of established fighters get bumped to the front of the line, fighters under the wing of members from the secret hand-shake society all get to taste the 'SUPERBOWL' of MMA. Nothing new under the sun baby...

Aldana comes cheap, Sinosic has proven agreeable to work with and eager to prove himself (thus I am sure negotiations were favorable for Zuffa), Eilers is being marketed by the grandmaster talent marketer of this industry... Its all nothing new.

Lastly, look at the recruitment process... PRIDE has an eye out... They are even working with promotions from other countries to act as a feeder and triple A type of envirnment (KOTC in the Past, M-1, now Cage Rage). On the other hand, the UFC only distances itself from the rest of the MMA community rather than delve into it. People are tripping over themselves to get in there anyway, so when the UFC says jump... Gabrielle Gonzaga says "How high". I will say that he is an interesting find with 4 recorded finishes in 5 fights going in to the UFC, and did win his UFC debut... but granted he is no Kharitonov or Fedor... and his only loss was to Werdum who you mentioned. Anyway, the recruitment process for new talent certainly has slid and the days when Art Davy used to literally drive out to find talent, such as a parking lot to see the likes of David 'Tank' Abbott smear a man's faceon the pavement, are gone.

I will close with this thought... I have never favored the linear card with 6 to 8 feature bouts. A feature main-event, one or two other feature bouts, and an undercard is the proper formula in my opinion. It puts the spotlight on the headliner, is cost effective, and warms up the cowd in a rising fashion to the bigger more anticipated fights. This is how the littler guys in boxing can still be a main-event. They are not sprinkled in with 4 other Championship bouts of the heavier weight classes. So in this regard, the UFC is doing better (the Liddell/Couture mainevent capping of what is by all rights exactly what I just described above). The problem is that they are still trying to do all the work and market just themselves as a closed sport. They would be much better off in my opinion if all of MMA had an identity as the foundation on which the UFC lies. That is the right formula for long term success. It is what PRIDE relies on when the bring in SHOOTO Champions, former UFC Champions, Pancrase stand-outs, top Brazilian names etc. They rely on the rest of the MMA world to do the work of building the names for them, so they can capitolize on that reputation for their promotion.

Well... If you watch this next UFC, enjoy the show. Plenty of fans think that we should just be thankful for all the UFC has done. So quit thinking for yourself, stop hoping for more, and enough of these high expectations. Just be happy, anything else means you are not a true fan (or so goes the popular sentiment from the knucklehead, I mean hardcore fans).

Royler Gracie trains to Hero's of March

After make two fights in 2005, in Hero's, the black-belt of Jiu-Jitsu Royler Gracie said that already started his trainings for a possible participation in the next Hero's, scheduled to next March 15, at Nippon Budokan, in Tokyo, Japan. "This is almost right my participation, I already started the trains. But this is not confirmed yet", said Gracie, that probably will be in action with great fighters as Yoshiro Akiyama, Kazayuki Miyata, Katsuhiro Nagata, Genki Sudo, Hideo Tokoro, Ryuki Ueyama, Caol Uno e Kid Yamamoto. By Chris Onzuka -

Hawaii's premier kickboxing event, Kickin It "kicks it up a notch" by hosting an event that allowed professional fighters to be pitted against the best amateur fighters. Kickin It has done a great job of putting on events consistently, slowing growing the sport and giving up and coming fighters a chance to not only get their feet wet, but also get experience against many different fighters in many different weight classes. This is event is a prime example of all their hard work paying off. Amateur kickboxers have sharpened their skills to such a point that the Pros have to be brought in to give them a challenge. This also helps the professional fighters that want to keep their stand up skills sharp by competing on a regular basis.

Many of the matches were set in flux due to last minute drop outs, but a full card of 12 fights entertained the crowd. The fights had a mix of results, body shots caused a few matches to retire early, while others went the distance. 808 Fight Factory's Bryson Kamaka and HSD's Ben Rodrigues was a great match, pitting Kamaka's movement and combinations against Rodrigues' hard counter strikes. The main event saw the return of the Filipino Phenom, Eddie Yagin, who was out of action for a while due to injury. He took on a very tough last minute replacement in Zack Rapol. Rapol took some hard punches and returned fire. The highlight of the fight came in the last seconds on the third round when Yagin landed a beautiful kick to the jaw of Rapol. Rapol looked stunned but caught the kick as the bell rung ending the fight.

UFC 57 Results!
UFC 57: Couture vs. Liddell 3 Play by Play Results
by Cbear

From the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Show opens with a silent graphic tribute to Carlson Gracie.

Side Note: This was posted by napalm442003 on the Underground:
I just received word that while at the hospital receiving post fight stitches, Nick Diaz and Joe Riggs got into a screaming match (started by that loud mouthed prick Riggs). Nick Diaz KNOCKED HIM THRE FUCK OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE EMERGENCY ROOM!!!

Nick Diaz (170 lbs) vs. Joe Riggs (169.5 lbs)

Round 1: Good stand up and grappling by both. Fast takedown with Riggs in the guard but they are back up in the standing clinch. Riggs throws Diaz off and they circle. Diaz presses the action with Riggs circling and countering. Riggs lands some nice short punches and a knee or two. Diaz might have a bloody nose and seems much stronger. Diaz traps him on the fence standing and lands a huge shot to Riggs' face. They hit the ground with Diaz looking for the submission and he lands another huge punch to Riggs. Diaz clowns some with the swinging arms and he looks like a lion. Riggs lands a nice punch and they circle. Both landing punches, but Diaz seems to be hurting Riggs more. They are saying Riggs is 30 lbs heavier than at the weigh in--and he looks it. Diaz and Riggs circle around the octagon. Diaz is looking fresher. Both throw hay makers that miss. Riggs lands a few short punches while Diaz continues to push the action. Diaz on top in Riggs guard as Riggs tries to tie him up. Diaz goes for the ribs while Riggs throws from the bottom. End round 1.

Round 2: Diaz is bleeding from the face. Diaz is pressing the action. Nick has Riggs leg looking for takedown but doesn’t get it. Riggs lands big punches to Diaz face but he counters with a knee. Diaz has a rock hard chin and Riggs is holding up well too. Riggs landing some big punches but Diaz counters nicely. Diaz cut under right eye. Riggs is starting to gas. Nice left high kick by Diaz. They are both punching hard and countering. Diaz is walking through punches looking for the opening. Diaz is bleeding from the forehead in the Ric Flair position. They hit the ground and Diaz working for the sub. Diaz loses a triangle and Riggs drops an elbow. Riggs punches are doing more damage but Diaz isn’t even feeling it. Diaz goes for knee bar but loses it. Riggs doing ok with elbow and had Diaz bleeding but it’s only a matter of time till Diaz subs him.

Round 3: Diaz bloody but looks much fresher than Riggs. Riggs keeps looking up--at the clock? Clinch at the fence, they separate and circle in the middle. Diaz presses but Riggs lands a punch. Riggs keeps looking for the big haymaker KO but Diaz either slips them or eats them and comes right back. My money is on Riggs gassing and Diaz subbing him. I think the fight is a bit more even than Rogan is making it--he says Diaz is dominating. I've got Diaz ahead but not a blowout. Riggs seems to be clinching to hold on at the 2 minute mark while Diaz presses. Punch counterpunch but slowing down. Nice right by Riggs but Diaz doesn’t blink. Looking like a decision fight at 1 minute left. ON the ground, back up. Riggs landing more punches in rd 3 but he looks like he needs oxygen. Nice Van Damme kicks by Diaz but Riggs answers with a kick.

Joe Riggs wins the unanimous decision. (29-28, 30-27, 29-28)

Renato "Babalu" Sobral (205 lbs) vs. Mike Van Arsdale (205 lbs)

Babalu looks like a semi-dead zombie ready to eat horse shoes and spit out nails. Mike looks almost collegiate in comparison.

Round 1: Carefully feeling each other out. Babalu clutches on the fence as Mike watches the knee. They are holding each other. Babalu throws small knees. Referee breaks them apart for lack of action. Mike punches and Babalu answers with a kick. Clinch on the fence and they hit the ground. Mike in side control but Babalu gets his side/back and drops a fist. Double underhooks at the 2 minute mark, Mike is in a choke. Mike is in a very dangerous situation. Babalu lets go but and gets a rear naked choke locked in for the win at approximately 3 minutes of the 1st round.

Renato "Babalu" Sobral wins by rear naked choke submission.

Babalu called for a shot at the belt and no doubt he is next in line for the winner of Chuck/Randy. Rogan interviews Babalu. I can't understand a thing Babalu is saying but he wants the belt.

Mir vs Cruz next.

Recap of Frank Mir to remind fans who he is. Mir says he wants Arlovski. Cruz says Mir picked the wrong guy to make a comeback against. Mir was huge at the weigh in and I suspect he will step in the cage close to 270. Mir hasnt fought since June of 2004.

Cruz out first and looks very tall and gangly. He trains with Babalu and has lots of wins despite only 1 mma fight. The feed for this ppv sucks, its blinked several times.... Mir walks out very calm and looks like a WWE wreslter with his bulk. Gassing is his question mark.

Frank Mir (257 lbs) vs. Marcio Cruz (233 lbs)

Round 1: Mir punches and Cruz goes for Mir’s leg. Mir eats some punches. Drop to the ground as Mir drops a shot but Cruz keeps going for the right leg. Mir on ground going for arm bar while Cruz drops rib punches. Cruz gets lose and is in Mir’s half guard and opens Mir’s left eyebrow bleeding. Mir bloody and cant see very well. Ref stop to check cut on Mir left eye. Mir looks like Ric Flair bleeding all over the place. Frank can’t see out of his left eye but says he will fight. They restart in same position. Bloodbath as Cruz elbows the cut. Mir is getting torn up--blinking hard like he can’t see. Mir eats every punch and trying for an arm. Mir eats several elbows and strikes. Cruz wins rd 1 by a huge margin. They need to stop the fight. Mir isn’t doing anything but bleeding. Referee Herb Dean should NOT let this keep going. It’s over....Mir’s face is a crimson mask of gore. Looks like a 2" cut right on the left eyebrow. Cruz wins by ground and pound and crowd hates it.

Marcio Cruz wins by referee stoppage.

Brandon "The Truth" Vera (226 lbs) vs. Justin Eilers (232 lbs)

Round 1: Eilers connects with two punches as Vera clinches on fence. Vera hangs on, they both hang on, the fence hangs on, and referee Mario Yamasaki hangs on...the crowd is tired of hanging on. Thank god for the referee break. Low kicks by Vera as Eilers eats them. Left high kick ala Cro Cop has killed Eilers. Holy cow Eilers isn’t moving.

Vera cuts a promo that is pretty funny and the crowd likes it. He’s coming back for sure. Eilers now has been TWICE knocked out for the highlight reel where he does the Ric Flair face first canvas kiss. Wow.

Vera won't shut up and crowd loves it. He’s getting married tomorrow and invites the entire crowd to the wedding! Great mic work by a young guy and the crowd is eating it up. His fiancée does a run in on the ring as Rogan now interviews her. She’s even a better interview than Liddell. What a crazy, funny, great interview. Hell, if I was in Vegas, I'd hit their wedding too.

They are going to show Monson vs. Hinkle next. Good move.

Jeff Monson (239 lbs) vs. Brandon Lee Hinkle (206 lbs)

Round 1: They immediately hit the ground and squirm around. Monson is on top with Hinkle against the fence. No real striking yet as they are bulling each other. Monson in side control as Hinkle tries not to eat knees. Reversals with Hinkle on top--nice! Unfortunately, neither guy seems to know a submission or what to do once they gain control. No damage at all from either guy with minimal ground n pound. It’s a wrestling match. Back up as Monson eats a punch but throws Hinkle off like its nothing. Clinch at fence as Hinkle grabs a guillotine but it’s broken up. Monson back on top as Hinkle loses the mouthpiece. Monson has been in control the most and leads. Monson had an arm but doesn't seem to know how to do an arm bar. Hinkle bloody nose as Monson gets a neck choke. Hinkle is choked unconscious! Monson wins in round 1 due to neck choke that looked to me similar to the Anaconda. Hinkle is pissed and jumped up like he is going to keep fighting but is waved off. Once again the Hammer House does a world class job in teaching fighters how to get subbed. Congrats to Jeff Monson--dead ringer for old Brute Bernard from the wrasslin' world.

Main event is next.

Chuck Liddell (204 lbs) vs. Randy Couture (203 lbs

Randy Couture walks out first to ACDC's "Thunderstruck" with Arlovski behind him. The crowd is deafening! No BS, this is one of those Rocky moments where even Herb Dean is smiling and patting Randy. Damn I hope the old man can pull it out one more time. What a history making event that would be.

Chuck out next to another loud crowd ovation--and some crappy ass Undertaker type music. Chuck desperately needs better music. He does his hip hop non-rhythmic dance to the ring. Maybe I'm prejudiced but the ovation doesn't seem as loud as Randy’s. Now the crowd lights up as Chuck enters the cage (but they died on his crappy music intro). Chuck would be better served to dish up Nugent's Stranglehold than his current stuff.

They are circling in the center with Randy stalking. Crowd chanting huge for Randy and nothing has happened. Chuck feels out Randy with short lefts and Randy covers up. Randy lands a left jab. Both fighters are tentative and measuring up. Chuck throws a miss. Randy is covering up high. Chuck misses a jab, Randy misses a right. Right by Randy, no damage. Left by Randy, no damage. Chuck misses uppercut. Both are patient as crowd chants for Randy. Chuck lands a right. Randy is not shooting in, but is boxing tight like the first fight. Left by Randy. Left kick by Chuck. Chuck feints hoping randy comes in; Randy does and lands a right. Both tag each other, Chuck lands a big uppercut and Randy takes Chuck down! Chuck bounces right back up, but has Chuck in side contr4ol on the fence! Crowd chanting Randy huge.

Randy is bleeding badly. No punch looked bad but there is blood all over Chuck from Randy. End round 1, and I give rd 1 to Randy. Small cut over Randy's left eye.

Round 2: Now crowd chants for Chuck.

Randy lands a right as Chuck circles the outside. Nice left by Randy, big right by Chuck. Chuck has landed a couple of hard hands in the fight but Randy hasn't flinched. Randy is down and out. Chuck lands a huge punch just like the second fight and finishes it on the ground. Chuck wins in round 2 by KO. Randy slipped while shooting in, Chuck nailed a hard right hand and finished it on the ground.

Randy is retiring tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy cow...... He is hanging up the gloves. The crowd is going nuts for him. Once again Randy cuts a great promo (while Chuck just thanked sponsors). Randy has a full ring thanking him.

Paul Buentello (254 lbs) vs. Gilbert Aldana (257 lbs)

Aldana looks like the kind of guy you do not want to run into at the corner bar. Buentello looks like he always does but gets points for coming out to the Pulp Fiction speech by Sam Jackson about calling down the fury of the lord.

Round 1: Spinning back kick by Buentello, but Aldana closes and it’s a slug fest! This is a slobber knocker with both throwing huge punches and a few knees. Huge left high kicky Buentello and he pushes Aldana down. Buentello standing as Aldana gets back up. Another spinning back kick by Buentello as Aldana tired but they threw bombs. Another left high kick by Buentello lands but Aldana can take them. The beer drinking slobber knocker fans should love this one. Aldana falls down throwing a haymaker but back up. Another left high kick by Buentello (makes 3) but Aldana nails Buentello or he slips....but on ground with Aldana on top. These guys might need oxygen if it makes it to the bell. Aldana gets Buentello back but loses it. Standing clinch. Wow, these guys are eating everything. Another spinning back kick by Buentello and he is getting uppercuts. Blood from someone. Rd one ends with Aldana bleeding from face. Buentello wins the round but Aldana might be Cabbage part 2 on taking a whipping and still swinging for the rafters. Not bad for a slugfest.

Round 2: More spinning back kicks by Buentello and Aldana is gassed but clinching. Aldana lands some punches but is tired. Arm bar attempt by Buentello fails. Buentello looks for a submission but keeps losing it. Aldana eats several elbows to the ribs and the referee stops it. Buentello dominated but Aldana was wayyyyyyy tougher than he expected. Aldana wasn't going to quit.

Buentello cuts promo 3 levels better than Liddell. It is turning out that Chuck might be the only guy who can't cut a decent promo anymore. Buentello gives big props to Arlovski yet still gets himself over. That was a smart promo and he gets 3rd place on tonight’s mic award--behind Vera and his fiancée.

End of the pay per view. 7 fights shown, 3 good mic segments and a legend retires.

OTHER PRELIMINARY BOUTS:

- Mike Whitehead (206 lbs) defeated Keith Jardine (206 lbs) by unanimous decision after 3 rounds.

- Alessio Sakara (205 lbs) defeated Elvis Sinosic (205 lbs) by unanimous decision after 3 rounds.

Kimo at Showdown At Cache Creek

The eyes of the MMA world will be on Brooks, California on February 3. Some big time heavy hitters (no pun intended) in the fighting business will be on hand to take part in the festivities. Among them will be fighting legend Kimo. Kimo is a true Icon of MMA. He is one of the warriors who first put this intense form of competition on the map. The 235-pound warrior from Hawaii always stood out from the pack on account of his intense no nonsense fighting style and his signature tattoos.

Kimo, who was recently inducted into the MMA Hall Of Fame, has stepped into battle with the biggest names in the history of the sport including Ken Shamrock, Tank Abbott, Dan Severn, and Royce Gracie. At 41 years of age, the battle-tested veteran continues to fearlessly step into the octagon and ring as his legacy continues to grow. In addition to taking in all the action, Kimo will make a very special live appearance at "Showdown At Cache Creek," and will be available to take pictures with and sign autographs for all of the great fans on hand on February 3. Bassman commented, "We are thrilled that Kimo will be in the house. Oswaldo Paquetá: Carlson's big friend
By Eduardo Ferreira

Oawaldo Paquetá, famous to be the first one to record Jiu-Jitsu championships, is black-belt under Carlson Gracie, a big friend and fan. As all the Jiu-Jitsu community, Paquetá is really sad about the great master's death, but have in his heart all the good memories and is proud to be the only one that Carlson used to hear. "I used to disagree with Carlson and he didn't answer because he knew I was right and that I was his friend", told Paquetá in exclusive to site TATAME that you can check out right now!

Were you the person that Carlson always heard?

Yes, I was. When Carlson used to talk bad things about someone, this person used to call me and I had to talk to Carlson for he can change the fact. I used to disagree with Carlson and he didn't answer because he knew I was right and that I was his friend.

Do you think Carlson had Vítor Belfort and Murilo Bustamante as enemies?

No. Everything was momentary. He was really proud of all of them. He used to talk bad things about them, used to call them traitors, but he was proud. I remember a Murilo fight that he watched in my home and he was really nervous like me. One day Vítor call me and Carlson answered the phone and treated him really bad. So, I talked to Carlson and he decided to have a lunch with Vítor. Carlson was like a child. He used to put nicknames in everybody and used to say a lot of ugly words.

How do you see the importance of Carlson for the fight world?

He is unique. I compare Carlson to Pelé. Will never exist another Carlson as like will never exist another Pelé.

Which are the five top black-belts graduated by Carlson?

Ricardo De La Riva, Zé Mário Sperry, Murilo Bustamante, Vítor Belfort, Wallid Ismail, Cássio Cardoso, Sérgio Bolão, Fernando Pinduka, Rosado, that was the only ninth degree that Carlson gave, Ricardo Libório, Valois, that is judge in Manaus. We have a lot of names that I probably forgot. He was a great trainer of champions.

What the fight world lost with the Carlson's death?

Carlson was the greatest fighter that I ever knew. He is the bigger one. Carlson was the person that most studied Jiu-Jitsu and Vale-Tudo. I used to make a lot of tapes and send it to him. I used to always send to him all the magazines and interviews about that. He knew everything about all the fighters because I used to pass everything to him.

How did Carlson popularize the Jiu-Jitsu?

Thought his fights. We have a lot of blows that he invented. Who is losing a lot is the Jiu-Jitsu. Now I don't know how it will be, but I can see the Jiu-Jitsu in two stages: before and after Carlson Gracie.

Zuluzunho - It Means Little Zulu???
By Takimoto

Takimoto- What do you have to say about Emelianenko Fedor? Do you consider him the best fighter in the world?

ZULUZINHO- Nowadays I consider him the best, but I do not have this respect that everybody has for him. What happened to me could have happen to any fighter. Even
I know what happened at the time, I had a blank and turned off myself from the fight. Apparently he does not have defects, but he is not unbeatable. I am waiting for the rematch and say that where there is a good fighter, there is one that is even better.

Takimoto- If you got the rematch, tell us how it would go:

ZULUZINHO- This time I would go straight to pursue him. My feeling is revenge, like the one I have for the Gracies.

Takimoto- Did the defeat change anything for you?

ZULUZINHO- A lot of things. Today my training is much more intense, harder, I am training a lot to not fall again. I train harder each time and with a higher difficult level. I knew now that the defeat is very bad.

Takimoto- Fan and insiders have been questioning about the work that is done for your academy and also the weight that you fight at. What do you have to say about this?

ZULUZINHO- About my team no one can say a word. We have excellent professionals there, like Ricardo Bulldog, who trains my ground game, Lula, who is responsible for my boxing, there is Ramilson Casca-Grossa, who is responsible for my physical training and Vinicius, who is my physiotherapist. I know that I am at the right place, winning or losing or even when I stop fighting, I will always represent the Bulldog Team. We are brothers. I will never change teams. We do not have mercenaries here, I am very happy with these 7 years at the academy. We started to have some visibility together and we will keep like this. About my weight, I know I had to lose some. I am already going to a nutritionist and put in my head that my ideal weight is 140kg (309 lbs).

Takimoto- Do not you think that a month prior a fight it was important to sharpen your game in some other top academy?

ZULUZINHO- No, because the only thing I did not have I already have, which is sparring. I have in my preparation Champion Antoine Jaoude, Bira do Para (1,95/120kg), Moreia (120kg) and others. Without disrespect anyone, I do not think that I will develop my game if I go to academies like Chute Boxe, Brazilian Top Team, etc… I want to keep training here.

Takimoto- When we will see you in action again?

ZULUZINHO- If God wants in February's Pride. I am training more than the fight against Fedor. I did not stop until now. There are 3 training a day, with rain or sun. Before, I used to train 3 hours a day, now I am training 4. It is much more intense.

Takimoto- Is there a possibility to see you in the Open Weight GP?

ZULUZINHO- I am praying for this. It will all depend on my next fight. I have to win, and win fighting well. I am training for this to happen.

Takimoto- What would you say are you strong and weak points as an athlete? And what is your Jiu-Jitsu belt?

ZULUZINHO- My strong point is my determination, my will to win, my courage to step into the ring, my history. I am not a carpenter that tried his luck in MMA. I am the son of an excellent fighter, because of that my will to win. And my weak point I can not tell,
because if I do, everybody will know(laughs). I am a Jiu Jitsu black belt for about 6 months and my coach is Ricardo Bulldog, formed by Cassio Pecanha, a Carlson Gracie black-belt.

Takimoto- There were some rumors about you fighting against Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira at the Pride Shockwave. If this fight happens, how would be your strategy?

ZULUZINHO- Before anything, I would like to say that I really admire him, that I am his fan and consider him very tough as a fighter. He preferred not to fight against me because I am Brazilian and opened the gate for me to face Fedor. But if I would face him I would look for the ground game, to stay on top stabilizing myself and doing the ground and pound.

Takimoto- Leave a message to your fans through maXfighting.com.

ZULUZINHO- I promise that I will train a lot to present myself better the next time and the result will be a victory. Only the one who steps into the ring loses and wins, only the ones who have courage. And I have.

UFC Popularity: Walking on Egg Shells
By Sean McClure

If I have learned one thing in my time as an MMA fan, it is that the people watching it are fickle. Don’t get me wrong, I am too at times… The loyal American fan base is there but they are also very few in numbers. Due to the recent success of 'The Ultimate Fighter' on Spike TV there is a new fan base and they are waiting for the next big thing in MMA to show up.
UFC officials are probably aware that people are staring into his bedroom window and watching their every move. They are examining every facet of the product that is put out there for mass consumption. That being said, there have been some really good shows this year …….and some very bad ones. The Ultimate Fighter finale for Season 2 for example, was a magnificent one. Ultimate Fight Night 3 in January of this year….not so good. Tim Sylvia was not looking his best or fighting up to his potential in the main event. People expect him to knock someone out because that’s what he’s known for and they especially expect him to do it when his opponent is an unknown. Assuerio Silva may be a good fighter but he should have been another notch on Tim’s KO belt according to popular consensus. Hey, things don’t always happen according to plan and don’t always live up to expectations. Just ask the WWE who has lost a lot of their fan base due to horrible writing and prima donna “wrestlers” politicking backstage for position *cough*, HHH. Most casual UFC fans watch to see the unexpected knockout or the out of nowhere submission reversal. It is an exciting moment for sure. Unfortunately, this doesn’t happen as often as they would like.

Overall the UFC product is scorching hot. Local shows are exploding everywhere and fans are eating it up. There is a downside to this that every popular product faces and that thing is the ever unforgiving stake in the heart called over-exposure. This is a challenge that everyone has to face. You don’t want people getting saturated with your product too fast or learning everything about it far too quickly. There still has to be that unknown out there, that discovery yet to be made to keep people interested. Is that why the UFC is bringing in all of these new fighters? Is that why they are pumping out four events in as many months? Could it be that they are trying to overwhelm people with the UFC brand... or are they overstepping their boundaries and hanging themselves out to dry? Only the fans can make that decision. If the UFC has at least one great fight (Hughes/Trigg 2, Griffin/Bonnar) then they can rest easy BUT, that’s a big but. If they fail to produce a memorable fight in between now and Season 3 of The Ultimate Fighter many fans may lose interest. That being said, their is an "Ace in the hole" and it is two words... Tito #$@#%% Ortiz.

Tito’s back baby and he is bringing the drama, notoriety, and his much needed attitude schtick back to the UFC. There are many others in the UFC who represent the company well and who the fans love - Liddel, Hughes and Rich Franklin being the men in that department right now. But Tito has the track record that many wish they could have and the mouth that many wish he didn’t have. Say what you want about him but Tito is going to help people stay interested in the UFC throughout 2006. Hardcore fans wrote him off when he lost to Chuck but these new fight fans from the TV success will love the attitude and hype, and didn’t he beat Vitor Belfort after all? Yep, and that is what we are going to see this year from him. He faces Forrest Griffin in April, Shamrock this summer, and if he wins those then he gets a rematch with the Light Heavyweight Champion whoever that may be. Look for this to be Tito’s year and look for the UFC to capitalize on it.

Let me sum things up on my ramblings about how the UFC needs to perform this year to remain successful; 1) The UFC has there hands full and need to keep producing exciting fights in order to be successful, 2) The UFC needs to utilize Tito Ortiz prominently this year to bring back some of the fans from previous years who may have been disenchanted with the product, and 3) The UFC needs to be careful of overexposure. If they pay attention to these three things then they are sure to grow more in viewer-ship and in revenue and that my friends…is good for us all.

Overtraining is the reason of Belfort

Replaced by chuteboxer Evangelista Cyborg of this weekend's cage Rage, Vitor Belfort revealed the reason of his absence in the show. The heavy training to a remote fight at Pride 31 would spoil his chances to fight Melvin Manhoef. The announcement was made two days ago by his manager Jorge Guimarães. "This fight would be very good for his career, considering Cage Rage is one of the biggest MMA events in the world, as Pride and UFC. However Melvin is a tough fighter, I don't believe he would give a hard time to Vitor, because of the difference of weight and size," evaluates Joinha.

IS PELE READY FOR THE SPOTLIGHT
by Mick Hammond

Few fighters have been as influential and perhaps underrated as Jose “Pele” Landi-Jons has been. One of the original driving forces behind the early days of the Chute Boxe Academy, Landi-Jons was instrumental in developing the team’s signature style of Muay Thai. After a successful career in Brazil, Landi-Jons seemed destined for international stardom, however things never quite materialized for him.

Despite some huge wins on his record, Pele has remained as something of a cult favorite fighter. At the upcoming Cage Rage 15, Pele has an opportunity to continue his recent comeback against UFC vet Travis Lutter and make his case for finally getting his shot at the MMA bigtime.

Before Wanderlei Silva and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, there was Pele. During the early days of the sport when it was still very much Vale Tudo, the Brazilian term for “anything goes,” Land-Jons was one of the true standouts on the circuit. His combination of viscous striking and surprisingly adept submission skills made him a fighter to be feared during the birth of MMA.

Winning his first seven bouts, none of which went beyond thirteen minutes, Pele spearheaded the Chute Boxe movement and quickly established himself as the man to beat. Even after back-to-back decision losses in mid 1997 that saw him go a total of 50 minutes combined, Jose still remained one of the top draws in the business.

No sooner than it appeared as if opponents were figuring out his game, Landi-Jons ripped off six wins in a row, brutalizing opponents as he had in the previous years, not going to a decision in any of the fights. Then in the late months of 1998 Pele would meet up with a young upstart by the name of Chuck Liddell (in only Liddell’s second ever fight) at IVTC 6 and lose for the third time in his career, again via decision to the future UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion.

As he had after his previous two losses, Landi-Jons would rebound, winning his next four in a row, including his US debut against MMA legend Pat Miletich. After losing his second American bout via majority decision to future UFC Middleweight Champion Dave Menne, Jose would win his next three including a highlight reel KO of another future UFC Champion, this time in Miletich’s protégé Matt Hughes.

During this same time period Pele split with Chute Boxe to head off on his own under the slightly modified Team Pele banner. With all he had been accomplishing as if Landi-Jons was destined to make an impact on the biggest stages of MMA, but it never happened as things turned for the worse.

Pele would unbelievably lose his Pride debut journeyman pro wrestler-turned-fighter Daijiro Matsui at Pride 14 via decision. He would then fallow that up with three more consecutive losses to Carlos Newton via submission, Lee Murray via KO and finally Renato “Babalu” Sobral via decision. It looked as if the once dominant fighter of the 90’s would never achieve the greatness he seemed destined for in the new millennium.

Perhaps seeing his career settling into its twilight, Landi-Jons came back in 2005, winning both his fights and now seeks to keep the momentum going in a possible last attempt to make his impact and become a recognized great by the MMA masses. In order to keep the roll going he has to beat a tough and determined Travis Lutter at Cage Rage 15 in what could be a classic contrast of styles.

Lutter, a UFC vet, is coming off a stretch where he’s lost two of his last three, is in need of a win to keep himself from slipping into the second tier show status. Knowing all that’s at stake for his own career, Lutter will look to make this his statement fight and use it to build momentum for his own resurgence, which makes him a very dangerous opponent for Pele.

To win this fight Pele must do as others have against Lutter, not allow him to get comfortable and take the fight to the ground where he’s at his best. Having been in the sport for ten years, Landi-Jons has seen it all and knows all the tricks of the trade, but he must remain busy and use his superior striking skills to keep Lutter at bay. If the fight goes to the mat it could be anyone’s game with perhaps the slight edge going to Travis, being an accomplished BJJ black belt.

A win for Landi-Jons and he can continue to prove that there’s still gas in his tank and he could continue to be a strong contender in the 185lb weight class. A loss and it may signal the end to a very decorated, but at times unappreciated, career of one of the true innovators of the sport.

Jose Landi-Jons is one of the true foundations from which the modern inception of Mixed Martial Arts was built upon. In a time where fighters were still stuck in one-dimensional attacks and training on their own, Pele sought to combine striking with grappling and helped to pioneer the team structure that’s so prevalent in today’s game. Even if he may not have become a house hold name internationally, he is still one of the true greats in the sport, and if he has his way, he’ll continue to be so for quite some time.

Help A Brother Out!

One of the best submission grapplers in the world, Hawaii’s own, Baret Yoshida has recently had some bad luck. His car was stolen and all of his training equipment (boxing gloves, shin pads, MMA gloves, etc) were stolen with it. After competing all over the world in grappling and MMA events, Baret has gotten the itch to return to MMA competition, but with his gear being stolen, the struggling athlete is having a difficult time replacing the stolen equipment.

As some of you know, Baret started his grappling career at our academy and has won many tournaments representing our school before moving on, so we will always have a special place in our hearts for him. How about showing some Aloha and joining Onzuka.com in helping raise some funds to replace Baret’s equipment so we can see him back in action? Onzuka.com is starting off with a gift of $50 and we are asking of you that are able to contribute any amount that you can afford. Even $5.00 will help! Hey, if 20 people donate $5.00, that is $100!

Please send checks payable to:
Baret Yoshida

We can collect the money and give it to Baret or let us know and we can find out from him where to send it. I don't think he would want to give his home address out.

Let’s not procrastinate because you know that you will never send anything unless you do it right now! Let’s see how much we can raise in the next 2 weeks and we will report the generosity of each and every contributor.

If you would like to mail a check, money order, or cashiers check (try to avoid cash because it just is not safe in the mail), you can mail it to our PO Box below and we will make sure that we give it to Baret. Make sure that you make the check, money order, or cashiers check to Baret Yoshida, NOT to us! You can get a money order at 7-11 or one free from your credit union or for a small fee at the bank.

Quote of the Day

"Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it."

Michael Jordan, Legendary American Basketball Player

Feb 1st Speeding Ticket Trap Day!

Not sure if this is true or not, but it doesn't hurt to be safe.

On February 1, the city and county of Honolulu will launch a 30-day speeding ticket frenzy. The city estimates that 9 million dollars will be generated in speeding tickets. 1 million will go to pay police overtime. There will be 50 police on duty at all times patrolling the 9 main thoroughfares.

They are the following:
H-3 both directions
H-2 both directions
H-1 both directions
Pali Hwy
Likelike Hwy
Nimitz Hwy
Kalanianaole Hwy
Kam Hwy
Farrington Hwy

Now 5 mph above the limit can justify a ticket and every officer is supposed to pull a car over and write a ticket every 10 minutes. They have issued 30 brand new unmarked cruisers and they are bringing all their part timers on full time.

Quote of the Day

"When you follow your bliss... doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors; and where there wouldn't be a door for anyone else."

Joseph Campbell, 1904-1987, American Folklorist and Mythology Expert
