Fight To Defend Mixed Martial Arts In Hawaii!

The Hawaii Government is trying to ban or restrict MMA in Hawaii. Please contact your local representative and let them know that you support MMA in Hawaii. Click the link below to look up your Representative and his contact info!

HB3223 has been passed with Amendments. Basically the bill has been rewritten to create a MMA Commission to regulate MMA in Hawaii and passed on to the Consumer Protection & Commerce Committee and the Judiciary Committee for further hearings.

Please Help Me Sell My House in Pacific Palisades!

Warning: Shameless personal plug which has nothing to do with martial arts. Sorry, I forgot the most important part, the listing price $579,000.

I (Chris) am selling my house due to my divorce. I need to get the house sold so I can get out of my marriage! If you know anyone that is interested or any real estate agents that you know that can help get the word out to generate interest in my house, I would really appreciate it!

This is the house that I planned on growing old and dying in, so it is a great property, has a lot of sentimental value and a hell of a lot of sweat equity put into it. It is in a great neighborhood, with great neighbors and is priced under other listed comparables in Palisades, even though the house and the land area are larger.

Please email me if you have any questions or if you know of anyone that would like to arrange a viewing.

We are holding an Open House next week Sunday, August 6th, from 2-5PM
(please check the Honolulu Advertiser to confirm).

Here are some of the details:
2255 Amokemoke Street
Pearl City, Hawaii 96782
Listing Price: $579,000

In Pacific Palisades

1,698 sqft living area

200 sqft covered work area

8,998 sqft land area

Perimeter lot with view of the valley, mountains, city, and ocean

New exterior paint on the house, car port and surrounding hollow tile walls.

New cement walkways and large concrete slab for BBQs, kids bikes or general entertaining

Retaining wall recently installed to create a large usable front yard

Tangerine, mango and lime trees in the back yard.
Hollow tile wall surrounds the house

All exterior doors were just replaced with fiberglass doors and deadbolts
Security door recently installed

Security bars on the windows for added security, also recently painted

Home Security system

Pool table

2 - 8,500BTU air conditioning wall units for the bedrooms, less than 1 year old.
Wall to wall carpeting and ceramic tile floors

Off the major street (Aumakua Street) in Palisades, so it is close to bus stops, but not a lot of passing cars

Great neighbors

$35 Annual Community Association dues, with no restrictions on house color, hanging clothes, etc like many other communities.

2 comparable homes, four houses away selling for $43,000 & $100,000 more.

CRO COP WILL FIGHT IN GP

After two exciting events, this year’s Pride Absolute Grand Prix has produced two stellar final four match-ups. Brazilian Top Team’s Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will meet former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett while the current Pride middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva will face Mirko “CroCop” Filipovic. Anticipation for Pride Final Conflict Absolute is high as the match-ups are an MMA fan’s dream.

Dream Stage Entertainment, the parent company of Pride Fighting Championships, is looking to rebound from recent setbacks with a successful show. The most intriguing match-up of the event is arguably the rematch between Wanderlei Silva and Mirko “CroCop” Filipovic. The two fighters met at Pride 20 and fought to a draw under special rules. The majority of the MMA community agreed that Silva would have won a decision had they fought under normal rules.

Recently, Mirko told two Croatian newspapers, Jutarji List and Vecernji List, that he would not be participating in the last part of the Absolute Grand Prix. Apparently, Mirko’s decision to not participate stemmed from a dispute regarding his pay. According to the newspapers, Mirko stated that “We couldn’t make a deal. They said I’m too expensive for them but I just want to be paid for the risk. I’m very sorry for my fans but I won’t give up on my principles.”

But now the crisis is over and the Croatian star was able to come to an agreement with Pride DSE and is fighting in the Open Weight GP in September according to Vecernji List. If DSE was unable to secure Mirko’s participation in the final four, a potentially historic event could have taken a disastrous turn for the worse. In addition, the newspaper reported that “CroCop” received a substantial offer to fight for the recently resurrected World Fighting Alliance. Mirko is one of Pride’s main stars and his absence would have been a huge loss to the organization. Pride DSE felt that it was in their best interest to come to a compromise with the former K-1 kick boxer and now the fans will be able to see Cro Cop in the conclusion of the highly anticipated tournament.

HERO'S REVIEW:
Sakuraba Perseveres While the Gracies Falter

In the opening fight, tough Killer Bee fighter Koutetsu Boku faced former Shooto champ Alexandre Franca Nogueira in a non-tournament superfight. The talented BJJ fighter was unable to keep Boku on the mat. The second round won the fight for Boku as he landed many strikes from the mount. The unanimous decision extends the Japanese fighter’s winning streak to six fights.

In what I considered the fight of the night, Ivan Menjivar and Hideo Tokoro entertained fans with a competitively high-paced fight. Both fighters asserted their control in this ground war. Many reversals, submission attempts and escapes highlighted the first round. Menjivar controlled the majority of the second and had Tokoro’s back on many occasions. Near the end of the round, a fatigued Tokoro attempted an armbar on the “Pride of El Salvador” but was unable to hold the lock. Menjivar would go on to earn a decision over the popular Japanese fighter.

It took only 30 seconds for American Top Team’s Gesias “JZ” Calvancanti to stop Hiroyuki Takaya. A perfectly landed flying knee put the Shooto veteran on his back. A couple of well placed punches forced the referee to put an end to the fight. With an impressive victory, Calvancanti’s stock rises.

In another 155-pound match-up, Canada’s Kultar “The Black Mamba” Gill met former Shooto champ Caol Uno. The fight started out with both fighters circling each other. As Uno went in for a takedown, he was hit with a knee that put him on the canvas. Though he was stunned, Uno would survive a barrage of strikes and regain his composure. Despite suffering a cut, Caol finished the round strong. Uno showed some of his ground prowess in the second round by quickly taking Gill’s back and sinking in a rear naked choke for the win.

Brazilian Rani Yahira faced karate practitioner Kazuya Yasuhiro. Yahira was aggressive from the start and immediately went for a takedown. Once on the mat, Yasuhiro was fortunate enough to escape a heel hook attempt. Taking the fight back to the ground, Rani would attain the north-south position and secure a choke to end the fight at 1:08 of the first round.

As the first 187-pound tournament match-up of the evening, Judoka Yoshihiro Akiyama faced K-1 veteran Taiei Kin in a fight that produced a controversial ref stoppage. Akiyama clinched early, seeking to take Kin to the ground. After scoring a takedown, Akiyama was able to attain a full mount. The Japanese Judoka applied an armbar that Kin would later spin out of in. Clearly not in danger of being submitted and with no expression of pain on his face, the referee unexpectedly stopped the fight. Kin stood in wonderment as the crowd expressed their discontent.

In the second superfight, K-1 champion Semmy Schilt made a successful return to MMA by submitting Olympic silver medalist Judoka Min Soo Kim. A few minutes into the round, Schilt was taken down by the Korean fighter. The fight would remain on the ground until the tall Hollander secured a triangle choke.

Pride and UFC veteran Don Frye faced Japanese pro wrestler Yoshihisa Yamamoto in the third and final superfight of the night. Sporting a soft belly, Frye remained content to stand and trade with Yamamoto. At one point in the fight, the Japanese fighter fell through ropes while trying to escape a guillotine choke. Frye dropped Yamamoto with a short right hook and secured a rear naked choke in the closing seconds of the first round. “The Predator” earns a victory despite his questionable conditioning.

Crosley Gracie replaced the injured Carlos Newton to face Cage Rage champion Melvin Manhoef. Unfortunately reminiscent of Mirko “CroCop” Filipovic vs Nobuhiko Takada, Gracie was reluctant to stand with the heavy handed Dutchman. Gracie looking obviously fatigued from taking the fight on about two days notice, the majority of the fight saw Gracie falling on his back after failed takedown attempts. Manhoef was reluctant to follow Gracie on the ground forcing the ref to stand the Brazilian fighter back to his feet on multiple occasions. After hearing the crowd’s discontent, Melvin would eventually follow into Gracie’s guard and unleash many unanswered strikes, causing a stoppage to an uninspired fight.

The Gracies went 0-2 for the evening as Judoka Shungo Oyama earned a decision over Rodrigo Gracie. In the most boring fight of the tournament, Oyama took the fight to the ground and controlled from the top. Shungo was content to stay in Rodrigo’s guard throughout the match.

Fans waited in anticipation for the debut of Japanese fighting legend Kazushi Sakuraba. In the main event, the “Gracie Killer” was pitted against current Shooto European champion Kestutis Smirnovas. Sakuraba took the fight to the Lithuania fighter early on. During an exchange of punches, Smirnovas landed a left hook that dropped the Japanese star to his hands and knees. Sakuraba was soon met with a barrage of punches as his head fell through the ropes. In a much debated about move, the referee pulled the barely conscious Sakuraba from the ropes and positioned him back into the ring. The questionable move allowed Kazushi a little time to recover.

Surmounting the ensuing offense from Smirnovas, Sakuraba would make an amazing comeback against the now fatigued Lithuanian. The exhausted Smirnovas could muster little offense against the rejuvenated Japanese star. Sakuraba would land many unanswered punches until the Shooto champion was chased to the mat. From there, the “Gracie Hunter” would extend an armbar and conclude the biggest comeback of his career.

Overall, K-1 Hero’s 6 was a decent event with its ups and downs. The middleweight tournament fights exceeded my expectations while some of the light heavyweight tournament match-ups nearly flirted with disaster. With the exception of the Boku vs Nogueira bout, the ‘superfights’ were merely mismatched space fillers. K-1 will need to address the questionable calls (and lack there of) with their referees. All controversies aside, the second round of the dual tournaments looks to be very exciting.

PRIDE’s new big signing
By Zach Arnold

Yeo Jong-Hoon (long-time correspondent) reports that Lee Tae Hyun (born on 1/17/1976, 196 cm, 138 kg) announced at a press conference today that he would fight in PRIDE. (Sports Navigator report here). Nobuyuki Sakakibara & Nobuhiko Takada were present at the media briefing. Tae Hyun is considered one of the great Ssirum (South Korean sumo) fighters, the same sport that Choi Hong-Man came from. Tae Hyun was the No. 1 Ssirum fighter for the last 10 years, including a regional heavyweight championship in March of 2006.

T. Jay Thompson Jumps in the MMA Ring!

Check out the report made by our good friend Mike Neva on the FCF website about none other than Icon Sports top dog, T. Jay Thompson, as he jumps in the ring with gloves this time.

http://www.fcfighter.com/news.htm

Here's T. Jay's recollection of the fight. Not sure if this was before or after the drugs wore out...

"Long story short...8 stitches a nose swollen bigger than it already was...and numerous bumps and bruises in places I don't remember being hit.......I wanted to be in a fight..and I feel like was! ;-) As an old friend use to say...I took plenty cracks! But gave out a couple as well. Huge thanks to Ryan Alverez for stepping in the ring with me. I am happy with my performance if not the desired outcome. I did some things better than I thought and some not so good..but all and all I am proud of my performance. I controlled the fight for most of the first two rounds....but my opponent swept me from top side conrol late in the second round..and did a great job capitalizing on the position. I was amazed out how many punches hit the mark. I actually felt my skin open from the hammerfist that cuased the biggest cut. Round two ends and I go back to my corner to let Matt Hume work on the cut...doctor comes in and stops the fight cuz the cut was to the bone. Not sure how much I had left in the tank but it would have been fun to go one more round....eitherway...fantasy camp is over.....back to being a full time 40yr old........for now...... . . . Here are some pics of the prefight preperation. . . Im in Seattle...fight Saturday night...weight cutting sucks....i want pizza"

Here are some pictures that I ripped off of T. Jay's page with a bit of commentary since I am the color commentary voice of Icon Sport. Enjoy!

T. Jay post fight. A bit worn from wear, but still in great shape! His opponent was checking to see if that was T. Jay's real abs or implants.

This is the stare that T. Jay gave the ref when he asked what day of the week it was. His answer by the way, was chocolate.

Here's T. Jay giving that post fight sensual look that makes all the girls go wild.

As you can see from the first picture, T. Jay's right hand was stuck in the shaka pose which hindered his ability to throw that heavy right hand that he is known for. He was still in good spirits even while on the floor in the locker room getting 8 stitches. Damn, I hope I look that good at 40. I've lost my abs and can't seem to locate them.

When asked what was next after jumping back in the ring, the poster was sent via email (high priority of course) with a simple note...
ARE YOU REAAAADDDDDDYYYYY? BE THEEERRREEE!

Thanks to people with way too much time on their hands for this picture.

Congratulations to T. Jay for all the months, weeks, days, and hours of training and the dedication that he put in training for this fight. He took it seriously and if you cannot tell from his physique that he took this fight very seriously, you need to get your eyes checked.

KID YAMAMOTO LOOKS TO WIN THE GOLD

This weekend at the HERO'S show Norifumi 'Kid' Yamamoto came before the crowd to let them know why he would not be fighting in MMA for awhile. Kid has risen to the top out of the multitude of Japanese fighters to being one of the most popular fighters along with K-1 World Max superstar Masato in Japan. After achieving such great success, he is leaving his MMA career while he pursues his goal.

Kid told the crowd that he's had a dream since he was a child to be an olympic wrestler and that's what he is now doing. He realizes that the quality of opponents in HERO'S is too high to fight and just use his wrestling skills. "I realize that I cannot come out and just tackle my opponents for three rounds."

This is why as he told the crowd, he would not be fighting that night. Kid is taking the path which may or may not prove to be successful, but if one never pursues ones dream then one is destined for failure as far as the dream is concerned. And as far as Kid is concerned the word 'fail' seems not to be in his vocabulary. As he said before the crowd this weekend, " I am going to the Olympics, and I am getting the gold."

Rudimar comments Chute Boxe camp

The first Chute Boxe Fightcamp finished last weekend, with the main goal totally accomplished. The camp had the presence of some friends from France, United States, Israel and Guadalupe Island training with Brazilian athletes. All guests had the opportunity to train with the professional team and the interchange was very important for the students and to the academy as well.

'The interchange is an opportunity to our fighters to have contact with other cultures and different fight backgrounds, we have plans to work with small groups, not more than five students to give them the chance to train with the professional Team, our plans is to offer this two weeks Camp along all the year, giving them the assistance and support here in Curitiba', said one of the leaders of Chute Boxe Rudimar Fedrigo very proud.

Anderson Silva: The new black belt
By Marcelo Alonso

Brown belt no more.

UFC star, Anderson Silva received the so waited JJ black belt from Rodrigo Minotauro and Rogério Minotouro. Since the end of last year the brothers Nogueira had already promised the belt to Anderson. "He is really though, with a complete Jiu-Jitsu. He is swiping and training very well with black belts", said Rogério Minotouro. Anderson received the belt affirming that his responsibility is bigger now. "I was training ground very hard and now with this responsibility. I will train much more to honor the belt I received", guaranteed Anderson, who gave an exclusive interview to site TATAME. Read below the complete interview:

How was to receive the black-belt? Did you expect that?

I wasn't waiting it, but I think my responsibility is bigger now, because I didn't have the responsibility to do the ground game in Vale-Tudo. Now that I am black belt this thing got complicated. Now I must train much more. I wasn't expecting that it would happen in that day, I knew it would happen, but not at that time.

How is your training now? Have you been training the ground part?

Every time I came here I want to train my Jiu-Jitsu. I trained a lot with Vitor, Rodrigo, Rogério and with all the folks.

Which is the next one? Will you dispute some belt?

I don't know yet. I think they will give me more one athlete before I have the opportunity to get the belt. I don't know who would be this athlete, I am waiting.

What do you think of this Pride match?

I think Paulão will win. I trained with him some times, and I already watched him training, I think he will win.

Who will probably fight him in the final?

There are a lot of though guys, but I think that Denis Kang. He will be a hard one to Paulão, but Paulão will defeat him.

What about the heavy match?

It is hard to say. There are four good fights. There are fights that you can wait everything, but I think that will be a Brazilian final. Wand and Minota for sure.

Do you think that Minotauro and Wanderlei will pass from their adversaries easily?

I think that the fight will be harder to Rodrigo, but Wand and Cro Cop wouldn't be so hard, they already faced each other, he knows Cro Cop's game. I am sure Wand will win that. But Josh will give some work to Rodrigo, will be a tough one for him. He has a good Wrestling, but Rodrigo will win that. I am waiting for a Brazilian final.

Do you want to return to Pride or do want to stay in UFC?

I don't want to come back to Pride. I already proved everything there. The event's responsible didn't want me there, so for me now I am in the right place, showing my job. I think that I already did everything in Japan. If I had to return to somewhere, I would return to K-1.

You had already faced Chonan and you saw how his game is. What do you think about his fight against Paulão?

He is a guy we can't let him grown. If you do a tough fight with him, he loses, but if you allows him to grown in his fight he will attack. But he is not a very expressive fighter, Paulão is better.

What did you make wrong in that fight?

At that fight I wasn't so well trained, my foot was broken. I wasn't with the experience that I had. I am better on the ground, I am better in all the details.

Interview with Pride newcomer:
Jeff "Big Frog" Curran

By Denis Martins

MaxFighting: Why is your nickname "Sapão" (Big Frog)?
Jeff Curran: The nickname Big Frog was given to me after a training session at Professor Pedro Sauer's Academy back in September of 1999. My friend Mica and Rodrigo Sauer (Pedro's nephew) were the 2 that were calling me Big Frog (Sapão). I was training and warming up with jumps and movements that they thought made me look like a big frog and I have a tattoo of a Tree Frog climbing an Asian Kanji of stone on my back. It was just one of those joking around things that stuck with me.

MaxFighting: You have fought MMA since 1998 and participated in events such as the UFC, KOTC, WFA and many others. You're the IHC champion, but do you think you've reached your goal by getting to Pride?
Jeff Curran: Pride, UFC...to me and most guys are the pinnacle or the top of the mountain in MMA. Fighting in Pride makes me feel like all my hard hours in the gym and on the mat over the years are really beginning to show. I have a chance to fight in the great country of Japan in the largest show on earth. It's truly amazing to know this. It gives my up and coming fighters some motivation to stick out the training and work towards their goals too. I am very happy right now.

MaxFighting: When you fight in the UFC, you weighed in at 150lbs. Do you think this harmed your chances against Matt Serra?
Jeff Curran: I definitively think that being the lighter fighter and weaker in strength had a bit of effect on the fight. To me, the fight was a success because I came out un-harmed and was able to show I belong there. However, it would have been nice to get the win. I had 9 days total to get my mind straight and try to gain some food weight. I think Matt Serra is just too strong and too talented in Jiu-Jitsu to do much more than I did in that fight. But hey, maybe someday the fight would go more my weight.

MaxFighting: You've had more than 30 fights in your career. How do you think this fight helps your chances in the Pride ring?
Jeff Curran: Yes, it's lots of experience to his. I actually have over 40 fights, maybe even 50. Every fight was an experience for me. I used to fight larger guys, much heavier and more experienced so I was able to get such a strong start in the sport. Technique goes a long way, but I was raised in the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu system and take every ounce of it very seriously. I don't have many flaws in my ground game or my defense to allow me to be damaged badly in a fight. That means a lot. On the other hand, I have the tools to dissect Hioki and do some damage to him.

MaxFighting: You're a very well-rounded fighter and a lightweight. how do you see it nowadays with all the events focusing on the lighter divisions?
Jeff Curran: I think it is about time(laughs). I think that no matter what it was eventually going to happen and I am very excited. Now myself and many other great fighters get a chance to show the world our skills and what we can bring to the mma table.

MaxFighting: Did you really expect it would happen one day(the creation of several light divisions)?
Jeff Curran: I knew it was going to happen eventually. God bless the fact that it happened while I am still young enough to get in on the action. If it happened in a few more years I may be too injured or too burnt out to step up with new talent.

MaxFighting: You're going to fight around 73kgs at Bushido versus Hioki; is this weight still a problem for you to reach?
Jeff Curran: I am working on gaining some weight, but Hioki is a natural 145lber so it is good for both of us to get some experience with a lighter/heavier guy. I don't see it hurting me because I don't have to cut any weight. I can finally eat before a fight(laughs).

MaxFighting: How heavy will be you be when you arrive in Japan?
Jeff Curran: I will arrive in Japan hopefully around 155-160 lbs.

MaxFighting: In the past few years you have had 4 or 5 fights each year , but now in 2006 this is only your second fight; why the change/
Jeff Curran: I have boxed professionally 2 times this year too. So, I am working on a pro career boxing and I box at 64kgs and that is a hard weight for me to make. I decided to hold off and only take high profile fights from now on. I wasn't getting any money offers from anyone and can't afford to fight for low pay. I've been in the business too long and my manager, Monte Cox and I, believe that we should wait for better fights. Now, I am with Pride against a great opponent so it its working.

MaxFighting: I know you had an arm injury in 2003 and you fought only once in that year. But you had other injuries in 2000? Because you fought only once in that year too.
Jeff Curran: Yeah, I broke my ulna in half and have a plate and 6 screws holding it together still. That was a big set back. Before that in 2000 or 2001, I had knee surgery right before I fought Norifumi 'KID' Yamamoto. After the arm injury I was okay for a while then ended up breaking my face in 5 spots- 3 of my orbital bone and 2 to the nasal septum or the bone just off the side to the nose. I was getting dizzy for a good few months-6months every time I rolled or bent over. Now I am healthy and strong.

MaxFighting: I did not know about this serious injury. How did it happen?
Jeff Curran: My face was broken by a right cross in my fight against Jason Dent. I spent most of the fight pouring blood from my nose (which was also seriously
broken) and was dizzy and losing my balance the whole time. I stayed on top inside the guard and ground and pound for 2.5 rounds. It was a rough situation.

MaxFighting: Your only fight in 2006 until then was against KOTC protégé and Bushido competitor Charles Bennet. What kind of impressions do you have about Bennet?
Jeff Curran: Bennet (aka.Krazyhorse) was a technically easy fight because he lacks a lot of skill on the ground, but he is a dangerous fighter with his slams and hard punching. I was thankful to have gotten my hands on him early in the fight. At that point, it was an easy fight.

MaxFighting: Do you think that the four fights you had in last year will cause any ring rust?
Jeff Curran: Not at all. I have been training very hard and as I said before I have been boxing. Boxing
6 rounds in professional boxing here in the city of Chicago is very tough. We wear 8 oz. gloves and these guys are very dangerous punchers so I have been really training my hands lately. I can go the distance with Hioki and not have any trouble with keeping pace.

MaxFighting: Are you following Bushido? What do you think about the event?
Jeff Curran: I followed bushido initially because I love lightweight fights. I love the event and I think it will continue to grow and stay a great organization.

MaxFighting: Hioki likes to play on the ground, do you guess he'll try to push the fight on the ground against a BJJ black-belt graduated by a Rickson student (Pedro Sauer)?
Jeff Curran: We'll see! I hope so. I really hope so.

MaxFighting: How comfortable are you with you stand up if the fight stays there ?
Jeff Curran: I am ready for anything with Hioki. He is a good fighter, but so am I. I will be there to entertain the fans and never back down. I represent the Gracie family and Pedro Sauer every time I fight. I carry the torch and have no intention on letting anyone else take it from me at this time.

MaxFighting: Is Sauer going to be yourcorner at Bushido 12?
Jeff Curran: Pedro will not be with me as a second at Bushido. He is currently relocating and he has a large family to move and settle in. Plus he has many commitments with seminars and teaching the military. He will be with me in spirit as always but my seconds are my boxing coach Doug Mango and my best friend and training partner, Bart Palaszewski of the IFL's team Silverbacks.

MaxFighting: This Bushido fight will be your second match in Japan. What did you think about Japan and what do you expect to find there this time?
Jeff Curran: I love Japan, but it is far from home.Ultimately I like to be near home, but hopefully I can have a second home in Japan and be excepted by all the fans of Pride.

MaxFighting: I know you were part of Carlson Gracie Team before joining Sauer's squad. So any comment to about his death this year?
Jeff Curran: I am very sad about the loss of Carlson Gracie Sr. I was always close to Jr., so never got a chance to really know Sr., but the times we have talked and met he was always a great inspiration. I pray for his family and for his teams worldwide that they continue to live on the legacy that he was.

MaxFighting: Would you like to add anything else?
Jeff Curran: I would like to let the world know that this year I celebrated my 2 year anniversary with my beautiful wife Sarah and on that day we found out that I am going to be a father. My first baby is due on St.Patricks day (March 17th) of 2007. I am very excited about that and want everyone to know. Also, I want to say thank you to my manager Monte Cox who was able to land my contract with Pride. He never gets any love!Thank you for everyone's time in reading my interview; it means a lot.

Will we see Florian versus Sherk for the lightweight title?

The two top contenders for the lightweight title are Kenny Florian and Sean Sherk. Pretty straightforward stuff there. The UFC makes the match and bam! we have a new lightweight champion. Again, pretty straightforward stuff. Should be easy as one, two, three and money in the bank for Zuffa the way it looks on paper. Check the upcoming pay per views and look for this fight. Do you see it? I would bet “no”.

Sean Sherk became the number one contender as soon as he dropped down in weight from 170 to 155. Kenny Florian became the other top contender by defeating Sam Stout at the Ultimate Fighter season 3 finale. Why hasn’t this fight happened you may ask? It’s simple…timing is everything.

When Kenny Florian was approached about his fight with Sean Sherk for the vacant lightweight title, he answered an emphatic “yes”. The UFC hashed out the proposed date and it looked like the fight was all set to jump off. Then rumors started surfacing about Kenny Florian ducking the fight with Sherk and refusing to gear up to fight. The internet forums lit up with accusations and speculations. Sherk posted the following on his website:

“I really wanted to fight on the UFC 62 card as planned. I told Joe Silva I will fight 155 or 170 for a title or a non-title fight but they were unable to find an opponent. It looks like I'll be fighting in October now, I just took 2 weeks off training and I'm ready to get back after it now.

I have one goal in mind, to kick the *expletive deleted* out of Florian!!”

Sean Sherk

This sparked further speculation by fans and the internet forums again lit up with accusations of cowardice aimed at Florian. Kenny responded on his website with the following statement:

"I would absolutely fight Sean Sherk for the Lightweight Division Title. The UFC said I was fighting Sherk in October or November, and I accepted. Then, all of a sudden, they pushed for the August show. However, I just got off the Stout fight and I'm leaving for Brazil for two weeks. Realistically, I need more than 3 weeks to prepare for that fight. Sherk’s been on the sidelines training for a fight for several months."

Kenny Florian

If you read Kenny’s statement and then examine Sherk’s, you would have to guess that they would face off on the UFC 64 card, where Rich Franklin will take on Anderson Silva on October 14. There is definitely some bad blood starting to show here and that is good business for the UFC and that should make for a more interesting and marketable fight. MaXfighting will keep you up to date on all of the developments of this fight as they become available.

Hot Links are Up!

Due to popular demand (well actually Chris, Mark, and I just discussed it on Sunday), it seems that most people viewing our news page are not accessing the huge amount of content that Onzuka.com has to offer. We put in a ton of hours to create the juggernaut that is currently Onzuka.com. We would like everyone to make use of it so that all our hard work is not in vain.

We created a Hot Links section in the top left corner of this page so that you can immediately jump to the most common areas that people question us about.

Main Page (No Flash)
This is the actual main or intro page of Onzuka.com. All the major links are located there as well as bios of Chris and I, acknowledgments, our video archive, etc. Some people have been wanting to jump directly to our main page to search for other pages that we offer and avoid watching the flash intro so here you have it.

Martial Arts Schools
This is the page that we consider our contribution to the internet. We feel that every web page should make one additional and useful contribution to the internet. We searched various sources and logged in all martial arts schools that we know of and catorgorized them by island, and then by ethnic background. Please take a look and see if the information we have listed is correct especially contact information because we get many inquires about how to find a school that offers certain style of martial arts. This is a public service from us to the many martial arts practioners and also the many people visiting Hawaii which is a Mecca for martial arts. Please do not ask us to enter more information than we already have there. This is not a web page for a school. This is general information so that people can find your school.

Casca Grossa JJ (Jiu-Jitsu)
This is a web page for our school. Many people want to check us out or join up so this is how you can get the latest information on our school such as tuition, class times, directions, you name it, it is on the page. Any other questions after viewing the page can be emailed to
info@onzuka.com. This page is an advertisement for our school, but this is our web page so we can do what we want.

As a sidebar, we do not accept guys training at other schools to train with us mainly because we do not want to appear to be stealing students. We have a great relationship with all the instructors in the state and we feel that it is not worth threatening the relationship that we built throughout the years over one student. Our school is not our livelihood and we feel that we can get enough students by word of mouth, our reputation, or our website to keep us happy. We specialize in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling and although we have a few guys that come to our place that fight MMA that we assist in training, we do not want to become a total MMA school, at least not at this point in time and in the near future. By the way, you can also click on our own school banner above to go to our school's page.

To advertise with us with banner ads, click on the first banner on the top of the page or go to http://www.onzuka.com/advertise.html. You will find that we are cheap and easy. Well, that did not come out quite right. You get the picture.

Links Page
This is a page of all the useful web sites that are out there and some that we just like to view ourselves. This page is in dire need of revamping, but we will get to that when we have time. This is also quick resource for a bunch of miscellaneous web sites if you need to do research and also a place to stick web sites we did not know where to put anywhere else.

Man Page
This is the page that we get the most compliments from. This is a compilation of numerous email attachments and other bits of information to keep us men from turning in to pussies. Others can use the page as light reading or if they had a bad day. There is nothing like reading some great material to turn a bad day around. Please make sure to read the disclaimer on the top of the page if you have any problems in regards to this page.

Speaking of dropping out of a fight

Dave Terrell has dropped out of UFC 62, which is more than three weeks away, because he has a sinus infection.

This news reminds of the time in 2000 when Terrell dropped out of a fight against Jeremy Horn in the IFC while the show was in progress. Terrell had missed the official weigh in before the show in Fresno, and so he weighed in at his bjj academy in the Bay Area and then drove to the show. When Horn insisted that he wanted to see Terrell get on a scale to see what he weighed before the fight, Terrell freaked and left the show - even though the show had already started.

So, if I scratch my head at reading this news about a sinus infection, you know why.

update 8/3: I received an email about this post that prompts me to mention the fact that I was the color commentator for the IFC show where Terrell walked out of his fight against Horn. So, I have first-hand information about the incident and had an involvement with the promotion.

PRIDE FC debuts in America on October 21st

PRIDE FC will make its long-awaited United States debut on October 21st with an event titled "The Real Deal" from the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Source: MMA Fighting

PRIDE 10/14 Las Vegas show

There is some question as to whether the event is scheduled for the 14th or 21st, but it is going to be a huge fight card for Pride's entry into the US market.

They are marketing this show as THE REAL DEAL. Seriously.

Press release:

Possible participants include PRIDE Fighting Heavyweight Champion FEDOR EMELINANENKO, “THE NEW YORK BAD ASS” PHIL BARONI, KEVIN “THE MONSTER” RANDLEMAN, MIRKO “CRO COP” FILIPOVIC, MAURICIO “SHOGUN” RUA, KAZUYUKI “IRONHEAD” FUJITA, MARK “THE HAMMER” COLEMAN, and other PRIDE Fighting superstars! (Fighters and card subject to change.)

PRIDEFC.COM mailing list members will have the exclusive privilege to purchase tickets two weeks before they are made available to the general public. Event tickets will be available on a first come first serve basis, meaning PRIDEFC.COM mailing list members will have access to the best seats before the general public. Ticket prices will range from $50, $100, $300, $500 and $700.

A few interesting notes: Recall when Mirko, a couple of weeks ago, stated that he was considering working in America in October but not for PRIDE or UFC? Jeff Thaler says Phil Baroni, who was supposed to work the UFC show in November (tentatively headlined by Vanderlei Silva vs. Chuck Liddell), is off that card. It’ll be interesting to see who fights and who doesn’t fight on the PRIDE show.

Coleman back to the UFC

FightOpinon.com is Mark Coleman may return to the UFC to fight in UFC 62. Coleman is not the same feared fighter who stormed into the UFC in 1996 or revived his career by winning the innagural Pride Grand Prix in 2000. Still, it will be great to see him back in the Octogon.

On a related note, if you want to see Coleman dance around questions about returning to the UFC, hear him talk about the controversial ending to the Shogun fight or find out what he has been up to, Sherdog.com recently caught up with Coleman for a video interview.

MARK COLEMAN: COMING TO AMERICA
by Tom Call, article compiled by Damon Martin

It seems like such a long time ago that fans in the United States were able to see former UFC heavyweight champion Mark Coleman fight on his home soil but that looks to become a reality, possibly by years end. After defeating Pride middleweight Grand Prix champion, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in February of this year, Coleman has been working to get himself the best deal possible to help him end his career on a high note.

Currently the former Ohio State wrestler and first ever Pride Grand Prix champion is weighing his decision as to where he may end up. Coleman is currently a free agent with no contract to any organization, including Pride where he has spent the last 6+ years fighting.

“I wish I knew right now,” said Coleman about the next place he might fight. “Right now my brain is scrambled with decisions to make. Pride or UFC, which one? I’ve got offers from both of them and I’m trying to figure out what’s going to be best for my future.”

With a confirmed offer from his former employers at the UFC on the table and Coleman’s recent resignation from coaching a team for the rival IFL organization, one can only wonder if the once champion is destined to return to the Octagon, the place where he started his career.

While Coleman has been content performing for the fans in Japan for the last few years, its his desire to return to America and compete to close out his career.

“In the States, I’m fighting in the States. I’m fighting in the States, period,” said Coleman very emphatically. “I’m coming back to the States and if that’s one thing that Pride offers me because they are now coming to America and I’ve got to come back here and fight before I’m done. I’m tired of answering the question ‘when are you coming back?’ I don’t know if people mean when am I coming back to fighting, a lot of people don’t even know I’ve been fighting the last 7 or 8 years. Or ‘when are you coming back to the UFC or America?’ I’ve definitely got to get back here because I’m tired of answering that question.”

Injecting Coleman into a fairly shallow pool of fighters that the UFC currently has at heavyweight could bring new life to the division. Coleman was a founder and fierce practitioner of the “ground and pound” style that is used by virtually every fighter at some point, and the UFC could instantly tout Coleman in that weight class. A couple of wins and he would be very much in contention for a title shot, where as in Pride, with the stack of heavyweights ahead of him, including the top three of Fedor Emeilianenko, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and Mirko CroCop who all have wins over Coleman, he would be muddled in the middle of the pack.

“I’m going to fight back here in the States before I’m done and I’m not done for a while,” said Coleman about his future.

Now its just a matter of time before the Ohio native makes his decision and returns to fight on U.S. soil, the only question remaining will it be for the UFC or Pride?

Drug testing in MMA
By Zach Arnold

Jeff Thaler indicates that
Kimo may be suffering from Floyd Landis-itis about accusations of doping.

Ivan Trembow reports that the Nevada State Athletic Commission is showing its thriftyness… by not drug testing many fighters on UFC cards. Kizer’s explanation is amusing, as he tries to explain why there was $835.20 USD in drug testing for a show (UFC 61) that drew an estimated gate of $3.3 million USD.

Let’s make this simple — either drug test everyone (and the commission & UFC can afford to do so now) or don’t test anyone.

Source: Fight Opinion

Do Kimo's stories add up?

Kimo Leopoldo has given MMA Weekly his side of the story surrounding the positive steroid test that forced him to drop out of his fight against Bas Rutten. Kimo has explained that he was prescribed the steroids by a doctor a few months before the fight was proposed.

I will leave it to the readers to reach their own conclusions about Kimo's using steroids under a doctor's orders. But, other parts of the interview get progressively more difficult to accept:
Regarding this sequence of events, Kimo told MMAWeekly, “What they said was, ‘Kimo, we had a problem with your test,’ and that’s what I explained to them that my doctor prescribed it, and they said, 'We’re not making any promises, but we will review it if you can get your doctor to give the prescription to us, and we will review this and give you a conclusion.' So, not even twenty minutes later, I had my doctor on the phone talking to them and he faxed all the information to them, and they didn’t tell me anything until maybe 12 o’clock that night. They said that they can’t let anybody in the cage that has tested positive for a steroid, but to me it doesn’t make sense because why would they have taken that information from me and wasted my time."

Kimo is unhappy with the way that he was led to believe he would still have a chance to fight. “I don’t want to sound like one of those guys who says they were set up, but I don’t feel like I was done right,” said Kimo.

Based on Kimo's interview it looks like the WFA tried to rescue the fight by giving the athletic commission a copy of the prescription, but the commission decided that it still could not let Kimo fight. I do not really see why Kimo should be unhappy with the WFA (after all, they did not screw up the fight, he did), but I suppose I can imagine how Kimo might see it the way he does.

But, Kimo then had this to say about his "fight" against Kazushi Sakuraba:
“I’ve been misrepresented my entire career,” said Kimo “It started from when I fought [Kazushi] Sakuraba, way back in his first fight, and I beat him. Half of the fight was a shoot, half of the fight was real. It was thrown by an independent promoter. It wasn’t thrown by Pride. I didn’t get that on my record as a victory. I didn’t say nothing to nobody. I didn’t brag...
Kimo thinks he was misrepresented because he did not get credit for a victory for a "fight" that was only half real? Hmmm . . .

Finally, check out Kimo's excuse for his other positive steroid test when he fought Ken Shamrock:
Regarding his fight against Ken Shamrock at UFC 48, Kimo said, "I wasn’t quite on par for that fight, and yeah, I did use some substances, and I did do some Winstrol in that fight, but at that time it was so early that I didn’t know I was going to be tested. That doesn’t justify it, but I wasn’t using it as a performance enhancer to be strong or whatever. It was just something... an extra little kick.
O.K. What was the "kick" if it wasn't a performance enhancer?

Frankly, Kimo's thinking leaves me scratching my head.

Anderson Silva's title shot?
By Sean McClure

It was obvious that after his demolition of Chris Leben, Anderson Silva would be looking down a short road to his eminent UFC title shot. It looks like it is scheduled to happen very soon.

Sources close to the Franklin camp said that this almost assuredly will happen on October 14th at UFC 64 if Rich’s hand has healed well enough and he is cleared to fight. This comes as no surprise and some say that this will be the measuring stick for Franklin’s championship legacy.

Kentucky authority member wants MMA banned
By Zach Arnold

Larry Bisig, member of the Kentucky Sports Authority, wants MMA banned in the state (according to an Associated Press report).

“It defies logic that a cock rooster has more protection in the state of Kentucky than does a human being, and if that’s not broken, what is,” Bisig said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. “This is not boxing. Ultimate fighting makes boxing look like a slumber party pillow fight.”

Bisig said he plans to broach the subject at a Wednesday meeting of the Kentucky Sports Authority in Frankfort. However, Bisig acknowledges that banning mixed martial arts in the state would likely require some form of legislative action by the General Assembly.

So, what would the motivation be? You guessed it - Bisig is a supporter of boxing.

And, Bisig said, the rising popularity of mixed martial arts fights is a threat to boxing both in the state and nationally.

“Let’s not forget that Kentucky is the home of several great (boxing) champions including Muhammad Ali,” Bisig said. “And we’re helping to rob the state of one of its great sports and assets by facilitating what is essentially street-fighting.”

Here is the web page for the Kentucky Sports Authority. The office phone number is 502-564-4270. The e-mail of executive director Terry Johnson is terry.johnson@ky.gov.

Larry Bisig is a graduate from the University of Kentucky (1985) and runs Bisig Impact Group, one of Kentucky’s largest marketing firms. The office phone number for Bisig Impact Group is (502)-583-0333.

If you would like to show your support for a local group in the Kentucky-Indiana area, please support Jeff Osborne and HOOK ‘n SHOOT.

Update: The Appalachian News Express reports on the fallout from Bisig’s actions.

Brock Lesnar training with MFS
By Mark Pickering

Pat "The Croatian Sensation" Miletich has confirmed that former NCAA Champion and three-time WWE World Champion Brock Lesnar has been training in Bettenddorf, Iowa, at the acclaimed Miletich camp.

Lesnar, 29, who has been expected to make the transition into Mixed Martial Arts since his in-ring appearance at K-1’s Las Vegas GP on April 28th, was stripped of the IWGP Title by New Japan Pro Wrestling on July 15th due to “visa issues” and is therefore free to pursue MMA.

“Brock come down to tryout the facility and see how he got along with the guys this week”, said Miletich on Sunday’s Wrestling Observer Live broadcast.

“He’s actually very level headed and a great athlete obviously, being a NCAA wrestling champion.”

The Minnesota native appears to be taking well to his new domain, “The way I would describe him is a 280 pound cat – he moves incredibly well for not knowing the fight game”.

“A year from now there’s not going to be anybody on the planet that can beat him”, Miletich boldly concluded.

The future of Xyience
By Zach Arnold

Xyience, which is the main sponsor of UFC telecasts (and has sponsorship deals with several fighters), may be facing some financial problems (according to a report on F4W).

In what could end up being a huge story, the word in Las Vegas the last few days is that there may be major problems with Xyience, once of UFC’s biggest sponsors. Allegedly, people are being laid off left and right.

If the report is true, it would certainly cause some headaches for UFC. It may also cause headaches for WPT Enterprises, Inc., the company that runs the World Poker Tour shows. According to WPT (in a press release issued on Thursday), they have reached a sponsorship agreement with Xyience:

The Company also finalized a sponsorship agreement with Xyience, Inc. during the second quarter of 2006 to promote its product as the “official energy drink” of Season V and Season VI of the World Poker Tour. The Company will recognize revenues from this agreement when the programs are broadcast beginning in 2007.

Shooto Commission Reinstates KILLER BEE, Not "Kid"
by Jordan Breen

Team KILLER BEE will soon be able to buzz in and out of Shooto as they please.

The Japanese Shooto Association has announced that the indefinite suspension of Tokyo's KILLER BEE gym would soon be lifted. The suspension, which has been in place for roughly the last six months, has prohibited fighters from KILLER BEE — Norifumi Yamamoto, Akira Kikuchi, Koutetsu Boku, among others — from competing in professional Shooto. It has also has prevented any up-and-coming fighters from competing in amateur Shooto.

The suspension stemmed from an incident on February 17, when Yamamoto's teammate Akira Kikuchi lost the Shooto world middleweight championship to Shinya Aoki. After the bout, physician Dr. Kenji Nakayama was tending to a cut sustained by Kikuchi during the fight when Yamamoto kicked Nakayama from behind, and verbally attacked him.

"Kid" claimed that the cut had been caused by an errant and illegal elbow by Aoki, and based on the appearance of the cut he disparaged the doctor for not realizing it as such.

After the incident, the Japan Shooto Association announced on February 21 that Yamamoto, and all fighters out of KILLER BEE, would be suspended from both amateur and professional Shooto competition.

Two days later, leading Shooto promoter Sustain held a press conference at the Hotel Metropolitan in Tokyo at which both Dr. Nakayama and Yamamoto spoke about the incident.

"It didn't physically hurt, but it hurts my feelings," Nakayama said. "I took it as contempt, not violence."

Nakayama said that in his 18 years around the ring, he had never been abused physically or verbally by a fighter, trainer or cornermen prior to his incident with Yamamoto.

"I am sorry," Yamamoto said at the same press conference. "I will do my best to not let this sort of thing happen any more; I just get too upset, and exceed a proper level of protest."

On March 6, judgement was handed down from the highest Shooto authority, the International Shooto Commission. The Commission announced that the Shooto license of Norifumi Yamamoto (Pictures) was in a state of non-recognition, meaning that under Shooto sanctioning Yamamoto couldn't compete as a fighter, serve as a chief second or cornerman, act as a manager or promote a Shooto event.

The Japanese Shooto Association, led by chairman Naoki Sakurada and chief executive Taro Wakabayashi, announced on July 29 that the Association's suspension of KILLER BEE would be lifted after August 6, making for a total of 170 days of suspension. As of Aug. 7, KILLER BEE fighters may resume fighting in both amateur and professional Shooto.

However, the International Shooto Commission upheld the indefinite non-recognition status of "Kid" Yamamoto's license. The ISC noted that while Yamamoto has apologized to Dr. Nakayama, he has not formally apologized to either the Japanese Shooto Association or the International Shooto Commission.

While it is immaterial in regards to Yamamoto's participation as a fighter — Yamamoto has recently announced his hiatus from MMA to pursue a freestyle wrestling bid at the 2008 Beijing Olympics — the continuation of non-recognition of Yamamoto's Shooto license means that he still cannot corner or manage any of his KILLER BEE fighters if they are to compete in amateur or professional Shooto.

Interview with the "Westside Strangler" Chris Brennan
By Denis Martins

MaxFighting: Is this your last fight on your Pride contract? Why the long wait since your last Pride fight?
Chris Brennan: No. I actually have one more after this one that will be fulfilled before March but I am hoping it is in October. I really don't know why they waited so long. There were a lot of contractual things going on.

MaxFighting: You haven't fought in Pride since 2004. What do you think about the changes in the organization during this time?
Chris Brennan: Pride has always been great as far as talent goes. I think it's great that there are so many lighter guys fighting now.

MaxFighting: Takanori Gomi is the #1 fighter at your weight right now, and you fought him 2002. How do you compare him from then to now?
Chris Brennan: Well it is hard to say. I had a bad style match up for him and almost subbed him a few times. He is much more aggressive on the feet now but I think he was always great. I believe he was 13-0 or something when I fought him.

MaxFighting: You had a tough match against Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro at last March. Tell us your main mistakes in that fight?
Chris Brennan: Nothing against Shaolin at all as I know he is one of the best in the world. I just didn't train properly at all. I didn't start training until 2 weeks before because I had a lot of personal things going on at the time. After the fight as funny as it sounds I was 100 times more confident I could beat him than I was before the fight. I figured if I could do as well as I did in the shape I was in, then with proper training I could beat him or give him a hell of a fight.

MaxFighting: That match against Shaolin was one fans had been waiting for, so were you disappointed?
Chris Brennan: Not really because my head wasn't really in it. Like I said I had more important things on my mind at the time.

MaxFighting: Did you have any serious damage after that fight or 'only' a swollen eye?
Chris Brennan: Yes. my orbital bone was fractured. I got caught with a few good elbows but only one real hard one and the ref stood us up and then he saw it.He called the doctor over and he took a look at it and I don't remember if he said I could go on or not but I knew it was messed up real bad and felt it happen.

MaxFighting: How is your training going for this fight?
Chris Brennan: The same day it was posted on the internet was the same day I found out about it. I just moved to Texas so I will be training with some new guys and some of my older guys. Pete Spratt as always for my Muay Thai and a few good Jiu-Jitsu guys for my ground game. I am in search for a wrestler as we type.

MaxFighting: So when you find a wrestler, what will you training be like?
Chris Brennan: I will train wrestling at least 3 times a week. I know I'm not going to get good enough at wrestling in 5 weeks to be a better wrestler than Kawajiri but if I can stop his take downs later in the fight or even get one of my own that could change a lot of things. I will be in great condition for this fight so cardio shouldn't be an issue.

MaxFighting: You're going to fight one of the toughest Japanese competitors in Tatsuya Kawajiri. What do you think about him and are you studying his game?
Chris Brennan: Well the rumor has it he is going to kill me. I don't want to fuck up the game of Mixed Martial Arts and be the first death so I am going to train hard. The only fight I have seen of his is the Gomi fight so it will be nice if I can get some footage.

MaxFighting: He's a fighter with a good Boxing and Wrestling. So where do you intend to dictate the pace?
Chris Brennan: Well as always I am going to go after him. I know he is a better wrestler than me and probably striker as well but that doesn't mean I can't land good shots on him and work my way to the ground. I think it will be a better fight than everyone thinks...

MaxFighting: Chris, a lot of rumors about your retirement from MMA have been heard, so is this fight against Kawajiri a special one?
Chris Brennan: I am not retiring any time soon. I am finally training full time with no responsibility of a school or anything else. I have some great sponsors and they make it easier to train full time. I was burnt out for a while honestly and the Shaolin fight rejuvenated me.

MaxFighting: Also, why do you think rumors about your 'retirement arose?
Chris Brennan: As I said I was burnt out for a while and fighting when I shouldn't have been fighting so I talked about it a few times but now I am getting the offers and fighting for the kind of money that is a little more motivating for me.

IFL announces four new teams

New York – July 31, 2006 – International Fight League™ CEO Gareb Shamus today unveiled four additional team logos for the IFL events which will take place at the Rose Quarter in Portland, Oregon on September 9 and at The Mark in Moline, Illinois on September 23. The addition of the Wolfpack (training in Portland, Oregon), the Dragons (training in Tokyo, Japan) the Sabres (training in Toronto, Ontario) and the Razorclaws (training in San Jose, California) will bring to eight the number of IFL teams to date. The full IFL season will kick off in the first quarter of 2007.

“We are very excited to add these four teams to our initial group that we unveiled in the spring,” Shamus said. “The combination of seeing these world champion coaches and their world class athletes should be quite a treat for the live events in Portland and Moline as we build toward 2007 and beyond.”

Additionally, Shamus announced that world champion Frank Shamrock will join the coaching staff, overseeing the Razorclaws. Shamrock will join a coaching staff for the fall that already includes Olympic silver medalist Matt Lindland (Wolfpack), World heavyweight wrestling champion and Hall-of-Famer Antonio Inoki (Dragons) and World Welterweight champion Carlos “The Ronin” Newton (Sabres).

Weltweight Forest Petz set to make his octagon debut
By Denis Martins

If you are a casual MMA fan, you may ask yourself who 's Forrest Petz? Well, Petz is a 16-2 fighter who possesses two belts under two different organizations, the Cagewarriors and Fight Fest. On August 17th, Petz make his octagon debut when he faces Sam "The Squeeze" Morgan, an Ultimate Fighter season 2 competitor.

MaxFighting: Last time we talked with each other for an interview was in March. How are you doing since then?
Forrest Petz: I've been pretty good. Staying in shape.

MaxFighting: You were training for the August 5th Fight Fest, and now your focus turned to a UFC fight against Sam Morgan. What did you change in your training to focus on your new fight and possible career in the UFC?
Forrest Petz: My opponent Arni Isaksson got hurt but then this opportunity came at a good time so it worked out pretty well. They are similar fighters I think. I train the way I always train.

MaxFighting: Is there any way of comparing these two situations? I meant you were going to defend your belts and now you're going to UFC?
Forrest Petz: Not really. A fight is a fight no matter where it is. I stay focused no matter what.

MaxFighting: You think these belts helped you get in the UFC?
Forrest Petz: I don't know. I think they were just looking for a 170lber for this guy and I just happened to be available.

MaxFighting: You conquered these belts after a war against the UK's fighter Dan Hady at FightFest 2. What can you describe to us about that fight?

Forrest Petz: It was a tough fight...one of my hardest. That guy is a machine.

MaxFighting: A few fans & insiders comment a bit about an unfair decision in your favor in that fight. Why do you think they did it?
Forrest Petz: I won the fight clearly. I took four out of the five rounds. But because my nose was broken in the first round it was bleeding and swollen. I didn't look pretty. Hardy wasn't as marked up as me when it was over but that's not how you score a fight. I watched the fight twice and the judges got it right. The only people complaining are people who are biased.

MaxFighting: By what you mentioned and how people talked about, this fight really was worth two belts. What do you think?
Forrest Petz: It was a hell of a war. I don't know if that guy is human. His recovery is sick. I rocked him in every round and put him down three times but he kept coming. After a 5 round war he was still fresh.

MaxFighting: The 170lb divisoin has Matt Hughes as champion and a lot of other good fighters. What do you think of this weight class and who are the most dangerous fighters in it?
Forrest Petz: This is the most stacked class. I think Hughes, St Pierre, and Penn are the best. St Pierre is my favorite fighter to watch.

MaxFighting: Your opponent, Sam Morgan, fought once in UFC and didn't perform well against Josh Burkman, his fight elapsed only 21 seconds. Anything you can take from that?
Forrest Petz: Not much I can take from that fight. Burkman and myself are very different.

MaxFighting: So what do you think about Morgan?
Forrest Petz: He looks to be pretty well rounded. I'm still trying to get more footage of him. He has an impressive resume.

MaxFighting: He'll want to prove that his UFN 2 fight against Burkman was a fluke and he'll try his redemption over you. You think you can use use this in your favor?
Forrest Petz: I'm not sure. I'm just focusing on my own performance. If he puts pressure on himself I guess that could work to my advantage but I'm notcounting on it.

MaxFighting: What's your deal with UFC? Is this a multi-fight deal or one fight?
Forrest Petz: One fight for now. But if I look good who knows?

MaxFighting: Thanks for your time. Good luck. Would you like to add anything else?
Forrest Petz: Just thanks to my coach Marcus Marinelli and all the guys at the Strong Style gym in Cleveland for believing that a stiff like me could even make it this far. Thanks also to Betonfighting.com for their
support.

POST BUSHIDO SURVIVAL INTERVIEWS
Murilo Bustamante

Pride Fighting Championships: What do you feel is the reason for your loss?

Murilo Bustamante: I think I couldn't win today because my strategy wasn't good, but I don't think his strategy was good for the fans. I ended up chasing him. I got caught up in that. I don't think the strategy he came up with was very exciting, though. I think I was the one that put on a better performance.

Pride: You took a right hook and landed on your butt.

Bustamante: I did take a punch during the fight. It was during the 2nd round. I got hit when I was trying to think about how I should push the fight. I was able to stand up quickly though and I was able to hit him with good punches, so personally, I think the last half was good. I think it was that punch that changed the flow of the fight.

Pride: You'll be 40 years old next month. What now?

Bustamante: I want to do some special training with the Nogueira brothers after I return to Brazil. Paulo Filho will be fighting (in the Grand Prix), so I want to focus on his training. I also want to work on my own training. Even if I'm 40, I'm confident that I can give good fights. I've never fought fights that I thought were boring and he was running away, so next time I would like to fight someone that wants to excite the fans.

EXCLUSIVE: KIMO SPEAKS OUT ABOUT DRUG TEST

Just over a week after being ousted from the co-main event of the WFA's "King of the Streets" pay-per-view due to a positive test for steroids, UFC and Pride veteran Kimo Leopoldo spoke with MMAWeekly about the series of events that led up to the positive test, his removal from the WFA card, and his immediate future.

Kimo was scheduled to face Bas Rutten in the co-main event of the WFA event on July 22nd, but rumors started to circulate a few days before the scheduled fight that Kimo had failed a drug test. While many forums and news outlets were reporting the news, it was Kimo who was seemingly the last to know, as he stated that he only found out about the results of the test on Thursday, July 20th, which was the day before the WFA weigh-ins.

This story dates back to May of 2005, when Kimo took on Marcus Royster in a heavyweight bout for the Rumble on the Rock promotion in Hawaii. Kimo walked out of the bout with a severely injured knee, which would eventually require surgery and rehab. During the time before the surgery, Kimo was offered a bout in Pride against Ikuhisa Minowa and fought with the injury, attempting to get by on his strength and weight advantage, but he eventually lost the fight by submission due to an Achilles lock. It was after this fight that Kimo underwent the necessary surgery to repair his knee, and Kimo tells MMAWeekly that he was prescribed a medicinal steroid to help in his recovery after the surgery.

“I actually had a prescribed medication that was in my system,” said Kimo. “I had a knee surgery that I had approximately a year ago, so my doctor prescribed me a few things to help me out in my recovery, and this was taken before I even had a clue about this fight with Bas. I was completely done taking it when I found out about this fight.”

The steroid in question is Stanozolol, which is commonly referred to as Winstrol by many athletes. Winstrol is an anabolic steroid that can be prescribed to help rebuild tissue that may have become weak after a severe injury. It can be used as a “stacker” that helps to increase muscle mass without the user gaining much extra weight, which is how it has been used by many other athletes who have tested positive with other professional sports and athletic commissions.

Stanozolol is the same drug that was found in the system of current UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia after a championship bout in 2003, and was also found in the system of former pro baseball player Rafael Palmeiro when he tested positive for steroids in 2005.

Stanozolol is also the same drug that was found in Kimo's system after a June 2004 fight against Ken Shamrock in the UFC, which caused Kimo to be suspended for six months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

On the subject of Stanozolol/Winstrol in particular, Kimo said, “It helps joints, and it's not like a testosterone. Those are really bad. Winstrol helps your joints a lot, and it doesn’t stiffen ligaments and things like that. I was on it for about four months, and that was way before I knew about [the fight with] Bas, and the doctors don’t know for sure, but it's supposed to be three to six months that it stays in your system. So, I went ahead and took the Bas fight.”

Kimo says that the medicinal use of the steroid was prescribed to him while he was rehabbing from his knee injury, and the treatments apparently stopped around March or April. Kimo added that he signed for his fight against Bas Rutten about two and a half months before the actual event was set to take place, and he believed that the steroid would have more than enough time to exit his system. Due to his previous drug test failure and suspension, Kimo would have to be tested before he could be re-licensed to fight by a major athletic commission.

“I really believed that it would be out of my system. I knew I was going to get tested, after my previous thing with the Nevada State Athletic Commission,” Kimo said in reference to the 2004 suspension. “I know no matter what now every fight is going to be like that. Now, knowing this and I’m a pretty intelligent guy, when I step into this doctor’s office, if I had any clue and I was going to cheat, I would have had fake pee. There’s a lot of ways around tests if you want to cheat, but I had no reason to do that because I felt I was correct.”

Once the testing was completed, Kimo returned to training in his final preparations for the fight with Rutten, only to have the officials from the WFA step in the day before the weigh-ins for the event to tell him that the test results had come back positive.

The WFA scrambled to find a replacement for Kimo, and the fighter who eventually filled that role was Ruben "Warpath" Villareal, who lost to Rutten by TKO. As for Kimo, he is still unsure about what his future holds in the WFA, and he has a hearing scheduled for August 8th with the California State Athletic Commission in order to discuss any punishment that he may incur.

“My relationship with WFA is pending. I have to go to Sacramento on the 8th to talk to the athletic commission and see what they’re going to say,” said Kimo

While it's no secret that controversy has surrounded Kimo in the past, most notably with the previous steroid test failure in 2004, he spoke openly about that situation and how other fights in his past still haunt him to this day.

I didn’t brag... and then I fight [Tsuyoshi] Kosaka in the UFC, and let’s just say out of a fifteen-minute fight, thirteen of the minutes I dominated him. The last two minutes, I tried to throw an armbar and he got on top of me, and he got the decision... and then I go fight Bob Sapp [in K-1], and I’m not a kickboxer, but I know my ability. So, I go in and fight Bob Sapp, and not only do I get cheated out of the victory, and I got a little injury, and I didn’t get the purse I deserved for the victory, and that’s why I took the Shamrock fight."

Well, when I fought Shamrock, not only did I lose that fight that quick, but they [the Nevada State Athletic Commission] went ahead and gave me double the punishment. Previous fighters, I don’t want to mention any names, but they got three-month suspensions and a less of a fine. I got six months and I got a fat fine from them, which put me in a pretty bad situation.”

Kimo certainly has gone through a myriad of problems since he debuted in professional MMA back in 1994, but he remains steadfast in his fight to prove his innocence in this situation.

“I’m not making no excuses. I ain’t trying to convince nobody. I just want the complete truth of the situation out there to everybody involved,” said Kimo. “I didn’t think I was dirty. I legitimately, honestly thought I did the right thing to prepare for this fight and be in the right place and the right mindset. I felt like I was wronged, but it's such a fine line right there. I was wronged, but yet I was guilty because the facts are the facts. The law is the law.”

Kimo certainly isn’t letting any of this dissipate the ill will that he has towards Bas Rutten. Kimo said, "This is the first time I’ve ever wanted to fight someone so bad. I want to fight Bas Rutten. Now that he’s already won and he thinks he’ll never see me again, he’ll probably retire again. I wanted this fight with Bas so bad that if I saw him, I might attack the guy.”

It will be interesting to see what happens at the California State Athletic Commission hearing on August 8th, and what affect (if any) the medical documentation of a valid prescription would have on the commission.

Having a valid prescription for an anabolic steroid like Stanozolol would mean that it's not against the law just to possess it in the United States, but even if one does have a prescription, Stanozolol is still on the banned substances lists of all the major athletic commissions, including the CSAC. It's not known if a valid prescription would influence the CSAC to be more lenient with Kimo's potential punishment, and at the same time, it's also not known if Kimo's 2004 drug test failure in Nevada will influence the CSAC to be less lenient with Kimo's potential punishment.

In any case, it will now be up to the CSAC to determine whether or not Kimo will get a chance to return to MMA competition anytime in the near future. The hearing is scheduled for August 8th, and we'll keep you updated on this situation as it continues to unfold.

To his fans, Kimo says, "Don’t be disappointed, because I’m not done. I’ve been through so many different adversities in my life, and I haven’t quit, and I don’t plan on quitting, so don’t be disappointed. You know, sometimes things look bad at the moment, but things always seem to turn around later and work out for the good. In the Bible, it says, ‘All things work for the good for those who are in Christ, Jesus,' and I believe it. I’ve seen it, and I have faith in it.”

PHIL BARONI ON UFC, PRIDE, AND SHAMROCK FIGHT

Ever since the UFC publicly announced that it has a working agreement with Pride, which is tentatively scheduled to result in a UFC Light Heavyweight Title match between the UFC's Chuck Liddell and Pride's Wanderlei Silva in November, speculation has been rampant about other fighters who might step into the Octagon as part of the Pride-UFC relationship.

Among those names is Phil Baroni, who made a post on the Underground Forum a few weeks ago in which he stated that he would be fighting "a top UFC middleweight" in the UFC in November.

Although things could certainly change again, it now appears that Baroni will not be part of the UFC's November card, based on what Baroni stated in an interview with MMAWeekly. On the subject of fighting in the UFC, Baroni said, "I don’t think it's going to happen, but I started my career in the UFC, and I think I’ll fight in the UFC again.”

Many fans will be disappointed to hear that Baroni doesn't believe that he'll be fighting in the UFC this fall, as the enigmatic star always made quite the impression and is almost perfectly built for the newfound popularity of MMA in America.

Even if Baroni isn’t likely to return to the UFC in the immediate future, he was not hesitant to talk about who he’d like to face if given the chance to fight in the UFC.

“Of course I’d like to fight [Rich] Franklin,” said Baroni. “He is the champ. To be the best, you have to beat the best. I know I match up real good with him, and I know if we fought, I would knock him out. The division is still real tough. They have a good group of middleweights right now over there.”

Another potential showdown that is looming for Baroni is a battle with former UFC Champion Frank Shamrock, who defeated Cesar Gracie in the Strikeforce promotion this past March, but broke his hand during the fight.

“The guys at Strikeforce are hard at work trying to make it happen,” said Baroni about his proposed fight with Shamrock.

Never one to wait around for a fight, Baroni continues to train and prepare for his next bout, wherever that might be. He currently has just one fight remaining on his Pride contract, but his next fight could very well be in Strikeforce or England's Cage Rage promotion instead of Pride.

As long as he's under Pride contract, Baroni can fight for other MMA organizations, but only with Pride's permission.

“Pride is good at letting their fighters fight in other organizations,” said Baroni. “Cage Rage is a great promotion, the biggest in England. I was supposed to fight there two times now, and it didn’t work out. I’m sure I’ll fight in Cage Rage in the near future.”

For now, the game for Phil Baroni is wait and see. With no current bout on his agenda, it's not clear what is next for the New York Bad Ass. One thing is certain, though: Baroni never backs down from a challenge.

“I’ll fight anyone. It doesn't matter to me."

THREE NEW FIGHTS ANNOUNCED FOR UFC 62

The high amount of shows that the UFC has been running in recent months is starting to show, with more and more fighters coming back from losses to compete in undercard fights. Four more competitors, all coming off losses, will try to get back on the winning path at UFC 62.

In a welterweight bout, Josh “The Dentist” Neer, fresh off a decision loss to Josh Burkman at UFC 61, returns to take on American Top Team member Thiago Alves, who was last seen losing to Jon Fitch by TKO on June 28th. Currently, Alves is 2-2 in the Octagon, with wins over Ansar Chalangov and Derrick Noble, as well as losses to Fitch and Spencer Fisher.

Neer also holds a 2-2 record in UFC action, with his biggest win coming against Ultimate Fighter 2 winner Joe Stevenson. Neer is a solid striker who is durable and refuses to quit in any fight, but he looked content to taunt Burkman in his last fight rather than going all-out for the win.

The light heavyweight division was long suffering for new blood, but as of late more and more 205-pound fighters are finding their way to the UFC. Two of those fighters will square off at UFC 62 as another American Top Team member, Wilson Gouveia faces off against Wes Combs. Gouveia is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Keith Jardine on the UFC's June 24th show, while Combs lost to TUF 3 contestant Mike Nickels on that same show.

Gouveia did look good for the first couple of rounds in his bout against Jardine, but it was likely his lackluster third round that did him in. Combs was highly touted coming into his bout with Nickels, but was quickly submitted by rear naked choke in the first round of their fight.

Also on the card will be UFC first-timers Cory Walmsley and David Heath in a light heavyweight fight. Walmsley has a solid record, but hasn’t really faced much top competition, while Heath is currently undefeated in professional MMA.

UFC 62 will take place on Saturday, August 26th in Las Vegas, Nevada and will be broadcast live on pay-per-view.

Pé-de-chumbo advises Jucão

During the second edition of JJ World Black Belt, the team TATAME watched a quick conversation between the Gracie Barra Combat Team athlete Délson Pé-de-chumbo and the Brazilian Top Team black-belt Roan Jucão. Pé-de-chumbo followed Fabrício Monteiro in his debut in Japan, and there he trained with some Japanese fighters. One of them was Jucão's adversary in Deep in August 4th.

- Jucão, I trained with him and this is your fight! He is not very good exchanging punches, he will try to take you down, but he is not very good on ground's game. He likes to attacks the foot, but he is not very good doing that. You know that I don't like to do the guard and I did rip him a lot of times - said Pé-de-chumbo, who after that was the champion of the half-heavy category submitting the new talent of the black-belt Rômulo Barral.
