Go Xango Health Beverage

We are posting this on behalf of our Portuguese teacher and friend. We have not tried this product, but with all the benefits and a personal recommendation, it may be worth a try.

Here is my website for the company & product I am happy & grateful to be associated with as a distributor for the past 2 years. It is a functional health beverage based on the mangosteen fruit, native to SE Asia & its positive effects have taken my own family members & friends to new stages of enjoying life in the face of things like high cholesterol, hypo thyroid, fatigue, diverticulitis, chronic depression, bipolar disorder, diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, sprains & sore muscles, inflammations, migraines, post-surgical recovery, eczema & sleep disorder.

I have successfully treated my animals as well for things like going off feed, snotty nose, sore hocks, corneal ulcerations, bee sting & prevention for symptoms of aging.

It keeps me going happily and patiently through my stress-filled,high school special ed teaching day. I no longer require that afternoon nap before transitioning on to other activities after school.

Introducing the product to others provides me with supplemental income & will hopefully replace my subsistence, survival-mode teacher salary.

Now that I've found it, I won't be without it. I hope you will take a good look at this product & company.

Anthony Torres in TUF Season 2

Local boy Anthony Torres made the cut for The Ultimate Fighter season 2 and can be formally seen by checking out these two links. We wish him the best and hope he makes it all the way to the finals! He has definitely proved himself in the local grappling and MMA circuit here and has the tools to succeed. I know that Hawaii will support him.

I can't wait until season 2 starts on Spike on Monday nights!

ANALYSIS OF THE QUARRY-SELL STOPPAGE &
Onzuka.com's Question of the Week!

Please read below because the article makes some interesting points, but I still disagree with the stoppage. I'm all about safety for the fighters, but for all the training that they do, give the guy a chance to recover after a flash knock down. Maybe he was out for a second, maybe not. Maybe Pete Sell himself can't even tell you. I also am the first to admit that being a ref is probably one of hardest jobs in all of sports because you are alone there with all these different facets of the game (standing, clinching, ground) that can occur at any given time. My recommendation is that let Sell have a few more seconds to see if he could immediately recover or be defensive. If he was hit with a couple more punches and did not defend himself, by all means stop the fight. Many fights encounter this same occurance. Some times, the fight clinches and hangs on until he recovers. I was just watching the Couture/Rizzo fight on Spike last night and Couture was hurt in the second round and hung on to dominate the third round. Give the fighter a fighting chance. Let him see if he can come back.

I hate to say it, but I think this is a direct result of having a boxing judge referee a MMA fight. Maybe no one will say it (maybe people are saying it because I don't read the forums), but I am not aware of Cecil Peoples' education of ground work. I am confident that he knows about boxing and people getting knocked out. As stated below, the author states that Sell was KO'd, but he did sit up and try to grab Quarry. I also believe the Gideon Ray was knocked out numerous times and kept coming to while being punched.

I know the UFC and other organizations need to have a good pool of referees to pull from, but it seems to me that Peoples was just in there to say that he refereed a MMA fight. I feel the same about Doc Hamilton. How are these older guys stopping these huge powerful athletes that are going full bore? The painful answer is that they will not and may cause more damage to the fighters that need the fight to be stopped immediately or to themselves if they stick themselves between the fighters. A few referees are more concerned about showing the crowd that the fight is over by waving their hands instead of pulling the winning fighter off of his opponent.

I feel that the fight was stolen from Sells. I am also the first to say that Quarry could have finished him off with a few more punches, but Sells should have at least have had the opportunity to see if he could come back or survive. Hey, everyone makes mistakes. I just feel that this fight was an early stoppage and an error by the referee. If he admits it was a mistake, even if he told it only to Sell, I would stand behind him 100%. I know that if he legitimately thought that Sells was out, they he should feel that he made the right decision, but there are always flash knock outs.

Onzuka.com's question of the week is:

Do you think the Quarry/Sells fight was an early stoppage based on the assessment below or what I stated above? Shoot us an email and we may post your comments.

Mike

If you want to see for yourself whether the stoppage in the Nate Quarry-Pete Sell fight was legitimate or premature, I would recommend that everyone go back and look at the tape.

Go to the point at which they showed the instant replay from the angle where you can see Pete Sell's eyes the whole time (not the angle that switches to a reverse shot after Sell goes down). Watch carefully, and keep your eyes on Sell's face.

He gets punched, he goes down... that alone doesn't warrant stopping a fight. However, in the few seconds it takes Quarry to pounce on him on the ground, Sell's face is completely blank, his eyes are rolled back in his head, and there is NO awareness that there's a man right above him who is getting ready to punch him in the face. In those seconds, there is no awareness of anything in his eyes.

Anytime you see a fighter with that look in his eyes, and especially when that fighter is getting pummeled with haymakers or is about to be pummeled with haymakers, you have to make a split-second decision as a ref.

Sell was grasping on for dear life by the time the ref jumped on them, but the same can be said of the Gideon Ray vs. Mike Swick fight... should that fight have also not been stopped?

The difference, and what makes one stoppage initially appear to be BS while the other seems fair, is that Sell recovers pretty quickly once the punching stops, while Ray doesn't. However, that really doesn't make a difference.

In that split second, the ref does not have the benefit of knowing how quickly the semi-conscious fighter would recover if the punches stopped. If you see a fighter with his eyes rolled back in his head and a blank look on his face, and his opponent is unloading on him, you stop the fight.
Period.

If, as a matter of policy, you consistently let fights continue in that situation until the fighter in danger is completely unconscious, just so there's no doubt in anyone's mind, a certain percentage of those fighters will die, as in boxing.

I'm not suggesting for a minute that's what would have happened to Pete Sell if the fight had been allowed to continue, since he did recover quickly once the punches stopped and didn't appear to have suffered a concussion.

What I am saying is that in that situation, you have to stop the fight. Go back and look at the tape if you don't believe me. I thought it was a BS stoppage as it happened, but that was because I couldn't see Pete Sell's eyes. If you look at Pete Sell's eyes in the instant replay and see how
out of it he truly was, that changes everything.

TITO ORTIZ INTERVIEW

Tito Ortiz hasn't competed in Mixed Martial Arts since February, but when he spoke with MMAWeekly's Jeff Cain, Ortiz held no punches. The former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion addressed everything you could possibly want to know about his future in fighting, and much more. "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" was candid, and spoke exclusively to MMAWeekly.com.

MMAWeekly: First of all Tito, how have you been?

Tito Ortiz: Good man, really good. I've been training. You know getting back in shape. I've been training now for the last month just pretty much toning up man, getting my weight down to normal. I think I've gotten the heaviest I've gotten in my career. 227 I weighed in three weeks ago, so my weight's back down to 217 where my normal weight is, and now I feel really good. I'm just getting to the basic stuff of wrestling again, boxing. It's time to perform, and give the fans what they want to see, and that's Tito Ortiz man.

MMAWeekly: You've had a pretty busy weekend. Friday you were at King of the Cage where your clothing company, Punishment Athletics, sponsored "Razor" Rob McCullough. How was that?

Tito: It was awesome man. Rob McCullough, Razor, is a really good friend of mine. I've known him since high school. We've been training together now for almost nine years man. We've been working a long time with each other. He made the cross over to doing MMA. Fighting in King of the Cage this last Friday, knocked the guy out in 45 seconds. He's a really vicious striker starting to get good wrestling skills, and it just seems like he's getting better and better. We're reforming Team Punishment all over again, and we're trying to bring some of the old guys back with Ricco, Rampage, myself, Tiki, Justin McCulley, possibly Dean Lister, and a few other guys. We're just trying to build it to what it once was before of being a powerhouse team.

MMAWeekly: Nice. Saturday night you were in attendance for the Ultimate Fight Night there in Vegas in support of Ivan Salaverry. Let's just talk about the fight first.

Tito: Yeah well I mean the fight itself Ivan just seemed like he didn't pull the trigger man. He was waiting the whole time, waiting, waiting, waiting. I think he gave a little too much respect to Nathan Marquardt, and Nathan, don't get me wrong. He's a really tough fighter. He's a good wrestler with great stand up skills. I mean I've watched the kid. I've watched a lot of his tapes before, and he's a great fighter. It just seemed like Ivan just never pulled the trigger. He never pushed it on him, and Ivan's a lot better fighter than what he showed on the show Saturday night.

MMAWeekly: I'd agree with that 100%.

Tito: Ivan's a really tough, tough fighter. It's just he needs the right guys pushing him at the right time to bring the best out of him it seems like. A couple of weeks before, when I was training with him, during training man he was picking up some really good stuff, and it was too bad that I wasn't in his corner. I was supposed to be in his corner, and Dana White said if you want to fight for the UFC, you will not have Tito Ortiz in your corner. I don't want Tito Ortiz to do anything with the UFC. Tito Ortiz will no longer fight in the UFC as long as I'm president. And you know what? I had a chance to have given Ivan a nice load of money to sponsor him for his fight, and Dana White pretty much said Punishment Athletics will not sponsor any UFC fighter. You know what? Between me and Dana White, there was some personal stuff. Actually there wasn't any personal stuff. It was strictly business, but once he got into my business of Punishment Athletics, trying to stop us from doing that. It hindered my company, and now it's personal. My back can only be pushed so far into a corner, and this is as far as I can go, so now it's just taking a step forward, and I will no longer fight for the UFC. That's what Dana says, and that's pretty much the way I'm treated. It was a complete disrespect because people got to understand that I was the world champion before Zuffa even owned the company. I was in the UFC when it was at the lowest it possibly could be. When it got kicked off cable. It got kicked off pretty much everything, and I stuck into it, and you know I used my image and my charisma to make the company as far as it is til now. It seemed like once they got to the mainstream they dropped me like a bad habit. They pretty much just got rid of me. When I started asking for a little bit more money they said the hell with you. We made you, and we can break you, and that's what Dana's trying to do right now I guess. I don't think it's anybody in the company besides Dana, and to him it just seems like he's a mob guy man. He takes feelings really hard. He's a guy who's really personal, and he really holds grudges really bad. You know my back can only be pushed against a corner so far until I start firing back, and now the time has come.

MMAWeekly: I know in the past Punishment Athletics logos have been on the octagon canvas correct?

Tito: Yes.

MMAWeekly: Now they will not allow Ivan Salaverry to have it on his shorts?

Tito: Correct, and it was a big chunk of money I was going to give to Ivan, and it was actually more money than he was making just to show up for his fight. It's too bad for Dana just to make it personal. I mean between me and him it's fine, but when it comes to another fighter making money, it's just really, really bad.

MMAWeekly: Do you feel betrayed by the UFC?

Tito: Completely. I mean they can say I completely betrayed them, but they've got to understand they're a multimillion dollar company. I haven't even made a million dollars from them yet, and I have a family. I have a little son that I have to take care of, and I want to make sure I give him everything I never had. It just seems like for him to do that, he's taking away from my son. It ain't hurting me because I'm going to make something no matter what, but it's just taking away from my son, and it's not right to do that to a person's family. You know? Dana is no longer the Dana that I used to know. Now that he's got the power, and he's a superstar because he's been on The Ultimate Fighter, and he's not a president man. He's a celebrity now, and I think the power has gone to his head.

MMAWeekly: You bring up The Ultimate Fighter. How do you feel, about these TUF fighters, do you think they're getting stardom too quick, and not having to pay dues that say maybe you and others had to pay?

Tito: I think so completely. I mean these guys are being built on, you know they're C fighters to me. Even B fighters. I don't see them as really that good of fighters to me. All of a sudden they're put on a pedestal, but don't take nothing away from them. These kids are young, and there's guys who'll fight in the UFC for free it seems like. You know? They just want to be in the UFC, and that takes away from a lot of the bigger fighters who've been in here for a long time. You know this is our living. It's not a hobby. This is our living. This is our career. This is what we do for a living to make money, and guys that come in and pretty much fight for free. I mean to fight for 1500 bucks. Are you kidding me? I mean what if they get hurt? I mean that's not even going to take care of training let alone paying for food for the two months they're training. These guys are just pretty much fighting for free, and I don't even have to say anything myself. You can watch The Ultimate Fighter, and each and every one of those guys says I'll do anything the UFC tells me to do. You know what it comes down to? These guys are just cronies it seems like man. They're just programed by the UFC, but you know what? More power to them. I mean I wish nothing but success to them. It just seems like the fighters now aren't the fighters that there once used to be. The Frank Shamrocks, the Ken Shamrocks, you know, the Royce Gracies, the Tito Ortiz'. You know? Guys like us that pretty much helped build this where it is now. Those guys are no longer in there. Pretty much the yes, yes people, and not the guys who stand for what they believe in.

MMAWeekly: So with the UFC being a past chapter in your life, what does the future hold? What do you have coming up?

Tito: Like I said, my back's been pushed against the wall as far as possible, and it's time for competition for Mixed Martial Arts. There's not going to be one big show anymore, and I'm going to make another company. I'm going to make it no matter what. I can't really say anything just yet. I mean within the next two weeks you guys will see it on my website, www.TitoOrtiz.com. I'll put a big release, and there's going to be another company made.

MMAWeekly: Another fight promotion?

Tito: Yep, another fight promotion. It's going to be a big one. It's going to be here in States, and Las Vegas is the first place we're looking to make it happen. A while back when I first started Tito Ortiz' Rumble on the Reservation, Dana White said don't ever bring your company to Las Vegas, and I wasn't going to because we were friends, but we are no longer friends, and it's personal, and I will bring it there.

MMAWeekly: I don't know how much of this you can talk about, or are willing to talk about, but can you say anything about the Vegas Channel?

Tito: Yeah the Vegas Channel. Actually it will be a new entertainment channel pretty much on everything that happens in Las Vegas; entertainment, fights, reality shows. You know? It's going to be just like E channel, and I'm one of the executive producers. I'll pretty much do the sports chapters of it, maybe some of the entertainment chapters also, so we're just going to see what happens in the future. Our first release will be January 1st, 2006, and it's going to be a huge company.

MMAWeekly: It looks like the future is bright for you in multiple directions right now.

Tito: Yeah. Like I said I was going to make it with the UFC, or without them man. And they pushed my back in the corner as far as possible. For Dana to make a statement saying I will never fight in the UFC, well the page has been turned, and I'm on to the next chapter in my life, and I'm going to make it happen.

MMAWeekly: So when can we expect to see you fighting again? You're back training. Surely it's for something.

Tito: Yeah. Well I mean like I said, the next couple of weeks I'll find out 100% for sure. There's a possibility of me fighting in Hawaii for a tune up fight. Not sure the opponent yet, but more than anything I think it's just for the Hawaiian fans out there that want to see me live. They never get a chance to do that, and I'd love to go to Hawaii, and give them a chance to see myself in an octagon competing. That may be happening within the next month and a half or so.

MMAWeekly: Can you say in what promotion yet?

Tito: I'm not 100% sure. I can't say the promotion, but it will be in Hawaii. You know it just comes down to seeing who's going to have Tito Ortiz fight there.

MMAWeekly: So let's talk about your clothing company, Punishment Athletics, and your website, www.PunishmentAthletics.com. You guys have some new stuff coming out?

Tito: Yes. Actually in 2006 it will be put in some retail stores. We're going to start off here in Southern California first. Somewhere like Hot Topics...stuff like that, and then we're just going to go across the United States and see if more and more companies will hold it. It just seemed like when I first started in 1999, I needed to build the quality of the clothing. We had a lot of problems with the flamed shorts. Of course a lot of guys who bought that, they understand the problems that I went through, and they stuck by me no matter what, and now that the quality of the clothing is where it's at now, and some of the designs that we've got, you know we're just pushing it to the next level. It's not just going to be for Mixed Martial Arts. It's for motorcycle riders, for the extreme sports. You know? For snow boarding, surfing, everything like that, so it seems like pushing it to the extreme sports is the next step, and not just sticking strictly to Mixed Martial Arts. You know everything that I'm going to wear, that I'm going to promote, I'm going to make sure that it's top level stuff. As far as the T-shirts and everything, and there's stuff that doesn't shrink. The logos don't fall off the shirts. I see a lot of companies that do have that problem.

MMAWeekly: You know there's been a lot of talk. Anytime it's dealing with Tito Ortiz there's a lot of speculation, there's a lot of talk, and I think a lot of people may have written you off, but basically you're going to form a new company, you're going to have a fight coming up, you're involved with the Vegas Channel. Does that pretty much cover it?

Tito: Yeah that pretty much covers everything. Restarting Team Punishment again. I think that's a huge thing to get my team to what it once before was.

MMAWeekly: Did you say that Rampage is apart of the new Team Punishment?

Tito: Yep. We're working on that right now. Rampage is actually training with us full-time right now at Ultimate Training Center in Huntington Beach. So like I said, we just need to get some right stuff done, so no feelings are going to be hurt like there was last time. All the guys are training together, Ricco Rodriguez of course. We're all working together to make the power house team we once had before.

MMAWeekly: Could you give an update on Ricco? What's his status right now?

Tito: Actually Ricco's just training right now. I think he should be getting ready for a fight in the next couple of weeks in a smaller show. I think because Ricco has a lot of timing to work on for his boxing, and his Jiu-Jitsu. He had a little time off after his knee injury, and he got surgery, so now he's 100%.

MMAWeekly: Tito, do you want to take this opportunity to thank any of your sponsors?

Tito: Yeah for sure. I want to thank one of my biggest sponsors, Pikos Pikosos, one of the spices that I cook with all the time. I mean I wouldn't be a cook the way I am. It's something that I use all the time. I mean it's some of the best stuff on the market right now. Of course the Vegas Channel, Victoria over at the Vegas Channel helping me and giving me the chance to be one of the executive producers, and use my mind you know to do some of the sport things that we want to do for the company itself, and Punishment Athletics, of course my company, and all the fans that have supported me this far. You know they stuck next to me no matter what, and they want to see me fight, and they're going to see me fight in an octagon soon. I mean I want to thank all the guys that have supported me. Everybody on my website, TitoOrtiz.com, I want to thank all of the support. I've been going on there lately doing chat lines, and I think we had up to about, I don't know, 35 people last night on there at once.

MMAWeekly: You mention that. Is that going to be a regular occurrence?

Tito: Yeah I'm going to start doing that again. I mean I think I've got to go back to the basics of being there for the fans that I was when I first started. When I first started Tito Ortiz what I really wanted to do was, you know, build an icon, and the fans are the ones that helped me build my name, so I mean I've got to be there for them. They've been there for me for so long. I think I'll be doing that at least two to three times a week during the nights after my training. Hop on the computer and just say hello to them, ask the questions that they want to hear.

MMAWeekly: Thank you for the time, and good luck in all of your ventures.

Tito: Thank you very much, and to everybody out there, stay tuned.

KOSCHECK SHOWS WORLD HE IS THE "REAL DEAL"

Becoming A True Mixed Martial Artist

Josh Koscheck shows the world what he’s learned since the “Ultimate Fighter”

By Damon Martin, MMAWeekly.com

Being a NCAA champion wrestler may have previously been the highlight of Josh Koscheck’s life, but getting a win in the first ever full event for the UFC on free television has to rank right up there. On Saturday night in front of a packed house inside the Cox Pavillion, Josh Koscheck stepped into a fight that a great many people thought was a very bad match-up for the former wrestler from Edinboro University.

Pete “The Secret Weapon” Spratt is a very highly regarded striker who is slick on his feet, and the general opinion was that his hands would probably end up being more than Koscheck could handle. To the contrary, Spratt looked like the more tentative fighter when the two came to the center of the octagon. Instead of keeping Koscheck at bay with a straight jab, he seemed to respect the fact that he was fighting a master of takedowns, and backed up almost instantly against the cage.

Koscheck shot in on the UFC veteran and took him to the ground. Within a few seconds of working from within Spratt’s guard, Koscheck was able to move around and take the back of the more experienced fighter. Spratt managed to stand up but Koscheck already had his hooks in and although no one would confuse him with a Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu expert, Koscheck took advantage of the position and locked in rear naked choke. Spratt battled valiantly trying to withstand falling back to the ground, but eventually gravity took over and with the choke sunk in even deeper, he had no choice but to tap out and live to fight another day.

With his win, Koscheck was able to show a few things that we may not have known before…

First off, Koscheck was able to stave off the pride that sinks a great many fighters when they try to prove themselves in a fight against an opponent with a contrasting style. He knew that his striking wasn’t on par with Spratt, so instead of baiting him and trying to stand-up with him, Koscheck pushed forward and immediately shot in for the takedown and pushed Spratt against the cage.

Next, Koscheck showed that he has been learning a lot since season 1 of the “Ultimate Fighter” ended. He started to prove he had more in his game than just takedowns in his official debut versus Chris Sanford in the finale in April. But in his fight with Spratt he got the dominant position and even though no one would confuse Koscheck with a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert, he did submit a very tough competitor.

Lastly, in his post fight interview with Joe Rogan, Koscheck dispelled so many rumors and ideas brought upon him from his portrayal as an arrogant kid on the “Ultimate Fighter” by being nothing but humble and respectful with his comments. He showed this side recently in his interview with Ryan Bennett on MMAWeekly radio, and again showed that he is still learning this game and acknowledged those who got him where he’s at now.

Koscheck is joining an already stacked 170lb weight class, but with heart and determination, he could be a major player in the welterweight division in the coming years.

Josh Barnett - Is He Ready to Return???
By Mark Pickering

Pancrase Open-weight K.O.P. Josh Barnett will this week announce his future plans, which could see a full-time return to MMA for the American.

After leaving UFC under controversial circumstances in 2002 Josh joined the NJPW ranks, debuting on January 4th, 2003 at the Tokyo Dome. Shortly after Josh started representing his new employers in MMA.

At NJPW's "ULTIMATE CRUSH" show, May 2nd '03, Barnett competed in a Vale Tudo fight against former King of the Cage Champion Jimmy Ambriz. Josh was victorious inside the first round after the referee declared 'The Titan' was in no condition to continue. This was an important victory for Josh as it handed Ambriz his first career loss and come before 55,000 fans at the Tokyo Dome. As NJPW continued to experiment, promoting Vale Tudo fights Barnett had debuted in Pancrase and successfully defeated Yuki Kondo at the Pancrase 10th Anniversary Show to become King of Pancrase Open-weight Champion.

Since then Josh has only competed in four MMA bouts. Each fight was hand picked for Josh and arranged by NJPW. Of the four fights only one ended in defeat, a clash with Mirko Cro-Crop at PRIDE 28, High Octane.

Barnett’s name was originally linked to competing against Mirko by PRIDE boss Nobuyuki Sakakibara at a news conference in August 2004. Behind the scenes New Japan had set the wheels in motion with DSE and opened negotiations with regards to Josh fighting at PRIDE 28. Despite the fight being confirmed and made public Josh was unaware of his upcoming PRIDE debut. He only found out through the Internet when visiting PuroresuPower.com

On July 15th Josh Barnett was announced as a surprise inclusion in NJPW's annual G-1 Climax Tournament. Barnett had recently recovered from a shoulder injury and was in the final stages of his preparation for the tournament. Last Thursday Barnett was suddenly dropped from the G-1 Tournament and replaced by freelancer Toshiaki Kawada. New Japan cited the replacement was due to Josh’s shoulder injury.

The babyface assassin discovered his G-1 place had been taken by Kawada from Japanese fighter Akira Shoji. Josh is yet to receive any official notification from NJPW management and is considering his future with the company.

Josh is still under NJPW contract and getting paid but will this latest act of unprofessionalism see Josh’s two year New Japan career come to a bitter conclusion?

A statement from Barnett is expected shortly at www.joshbarnett.tv

DSE Announces PRIDE Bushido
73- and 83-kg. Grand Prix Lists

by Stephen Martinez

TOKYO, August 4 — Dream Stage Entertainment, by word of PRIDE’s Nobuhiko Takada (pictures), announced two lists of fighters with possible names for the upcoming PRIDE Bushido lightweight and welterweight Grand Prix scheduled for Differ Ariake on September 25.

Japanese star and PRIDE Bushido “ace” Takanori Gomi (pictures) was announced as the first fighter officially included in the 73-kg. (160-lb.) lightweight tournament. This automatically leaves seven spots open in the lightweight division to accompany Gomi in the tournament intended to crown the best PRIDE Bushido fighter at that weight.

Hayato Sakurai
Tatsuya Kawajiri
Naoyuki Kotani
Dokonjonosuke Mishima
Jens Pulver
Yves Edwards
Ralph Gracie
Luiz Azeredo
Luiz Firmino
Charles Bennett
Joachim Hansen

Under the same line, Takada presented to the Japanese media the official list of candidates for the 83-kg. (183-lb.) tournament.

Ryo Chonan
Ikuhisa Minowa
Akihiro Gono
Kazuo Misaki
Ryuta Sakurai
Yasuhito Namekawa
Akira Shoji
Daniel Acacio
Murilo Bustamante
Phil Baroni
Denis Kang
Paulo Filho
Yuki Kondo

Eight fighters from the 83-kg list will comprise the welterweight tournament.

Both the lightweight and welterweight tournaments begin in Ariake, with the advancing fighters facing two bouts as part of the elimination tournament.

The finals will be held in December. Also PRIDE plans to crown the Grand Prix winners plus the new lightweight and welterweight division champions, leaving by the end of this year PRIDE with four official divisions lead by their respective champions.

The biggest surprise of the lightweight list is the exclusion of American lightweight star Josh Thomson (pictures), who made an amazing Bushido debut in July. Also other notable names missing are Brazilian fighters Marcos Aurelio and Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro. “Shaolin” is scheduled to fight Jean Silva (pictures) at Cage Rage on September 10.

The inclusion of Hayato “Mach” Sakurai, who is scheduled to fight in SHOOTO a month before the Bushido tournament, and the heavy rumor about Joachim Hansen (pictures) fighting in the same SHOOTO show gives both fighters a little over a month to get ready for the Grand Prix.

All this plus another heavily rumored SHOOTO fight with the same Hansen taking on Tatsuya Kawajiri (pictures) for the SHOOTO welterweight (154 pounds) title in December places these fighters in serious schedule conflicts for the upcoming months.

>From the welterweight side the biggest surprise is the inclusion of Yuki Kondo (pictures) as a possible candidate, since there are heavy rumors about Kondo facing Vitor Belfort (pictures) in the PRIDE Final Conflict show in August. Dennis Kang is another name that jumps to mind since I clearly recall Kang telling the press backstage at PRIDE Bushido 8 about his broken hand.

Two more surprises are the inclusion of Akira Shoji (pictures) and Yasuhito Namekawa (pictures) as possible candidates. With so many good middleweights out there, one wonders why PRIDE needs to include these two on the list since they have not accomplished anything lately inside PRIDE.

Takada told the press the reason why Gomi was automatically included in the opening round is because, “Gomi has won everything, he doesn’t need to prove anything until now.”

Also The Japanese press asked Gomi who he wants to face in the tournament finals. To everyone’s surprise he said, “I want to fight with ‘Mach’ Sakurai in the tournament finals. I respect ‘Mach’ from my days at amateur in SHOOTO and I hold a good relation with ‘Mach’s’ brother so I want to fight him out of respect.”

“I want Gomi to perform strong in this tournament and follow Sakuraba’s and Yoshida’s footsteps as the new ace in PRIDE,” Takada said. To finish Takada also included this terrific statement:“Gomi's new Bushido fight starts toward the achievement of the aspired Wanderlei Silva (pictures) war later next year.”

RIZZO COMMENTS ON TRAINING WITH CHUTE BOXE

Pedro Rizzo spoke with Brazilian magazine 'Tatame' about the two weeks he just spent training with the Chute Boxe team. Here's what Rizzo had to say (translation by Ricardo Alonso:)

"It was excellent. The exchange between teams was a way to train with different people. I was very well treated, and even though I was an outsider, they treated me like one of their own. I felt very welcomed.

The training was very intense and specific. I trained with everyone... with Vanderlei, Shogun, Cyborg. Everyone was very receptive. I didn't get to train much on the ground because of an injury, but I trained a lot of Muay Thai. I will now go to Holland to train with Peter Aerts for four weeks, and when I return I want to come back to train at Chute Boxe, and then go to the United States to stay with Marco Ruas." -Pedro Rizzo

"Minotauro" Recovering from Surgery, Eyes October or December Fight
by Sherdog.com

Former PRIDE heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is in recovery mode after surgery last Saturday to an injured arm, sources close to the Brazilian told Sherdog.com.

Part of the healing process will see Nogueira spend time at Florida's American Top Team.

Depending on the progress of his rehabilitation, "Minotauro" could fight former K-1 World Grand Prix champion Mark Hunt as soon as October.

If he is unable to step back into the ring by the fall, sources in his camp indicate he'll face the winner of August 28's PRIDE heavyweight title fight between champion Fedor Emelianenko and challenger Mirko Filipovic in December.

California MMA Regulations "Pulled Back"
for PRIDE Amendments;
Final Approval Pushed to November at Earliest

By Loretta Hunt

A California State Athletic Commission meeting held yesterday in downtown Los Angeles yielded promising developments for Japan's leading mixed martial arts organization PRIDE, yet extended the time in which the sport must take to be legalized in the state by a minimum of 45 to 60 days, pushing a final approval date dangerously close to missing its December 9th fiscal deadline.

With a unanimous vote among the four Commissioners in attendance, the CSAC opted to recognize three revisions that Dream Stage Entertainment, promoters of PRIDE, had applied for consideration. They included the option of the use of a ring as opposed to a cage for MMA contests in the state, as well as the utilization of a 10-5-5 minute round format and the approval for fighters to wear gis and wrestling shoes in MMA bouts.

In approving these modifications to regulations that were already passed by the Commission this February, the CSAC had essentially voted for the return of the currently circulating regulations that had recently arrived at the Office of Administrative Law (OAL) on July 27th for their final phase of review. Since their February approval, these regulations had already passed through the legal office of the CSAC, as well as through the Department of Consumer Affairs. If they had stayed their course, final approval for the rules to take effect would have been anticipated for October 7th, with the Commission proposing to hold its first regulated show by mid-October.

"If we are inclined as a Commission to permit these additions, then all of this should get done at the same time," CSAC Chairman Chris Mears noted just moments before Commissioner Mike Carona motioned for a vote to accept the three provisions. "I think that if we vote to pull these [regulations] back, make the modifications and resubmit them, then everybody gets in the same boat and everybody rows as hard as they can." Although he had taken an opposite stance a few minutes before to let the regulations continue their course as-is, Commissioner John Frierson seconded Carona's motion.

The vote passed unanimously despite the voiced reservations of CSAC counsel Anita Scurry and Executive Director Armando Garcia, as well as Charlene Zettel, Director of Department of Consumer Affairs, who encouraged the Commission to allow the regulations to continue their course and consider revisions at a later time to not risk missing the fiscal deadline. In that scenario, the CSAC would have to begin the MMA regulation process all over again in June 2006. To compound the situation further, it remains to be seen if a Commission will still be in place that time next year to take action with a "sunset" or phase-out campaign currently being expedited by the Department of Consumer Affairs.

With this new course of action, final approval can be anticipated for November at the earliest, granted the revised regulations move through each department again without scrutiny, a possibility which seemed highly unlikely given comments made by DCA head Zettel after the vote had transpired. "I would just to tell you in good conscience, that while I've worked diligently to look through those regulations and approve them because I knew how long it had taken them to get to my desk, with the testimony I've heard here with regards to use of a shoe as part of an instrument, I have concerns. I'm not sure that I'd just turn them [the regulations] back around in 24 hours."

The vote came on the tail end of two hours of testimony primarily from DSE, as well as the UFC, which was represented by COO Kirk Kendrick, head referee John McCarthy, and lobbyist Tim Lynch, as well as their "triple crown" of champions which included Matt Hughes, Rich Franklin, and Chuck Liddell.

For PRIDE, CEO Nobuyuki Sakakibara attended from Japan. He was joined by U.S. PRIDE executives Hideki Yamamoto, Yukino Kanda, and Turi Altavilla, Counsel Robert Philibosicam, as well as fighter and commentator Bas Rutten. Altavilla was the first to speak on the proposed revisions, which notably omitted two provisions the organization had lobbied for in earlier sessions-- kicks and knees to the head of a downed opponent. "Though we feel that through the years statistically we've proven that they're safe, we understand the issue with perception, so we've decided to withdraw those," Altavilla began before quickly moving on to address the three modifications on the table.

"We feel that this is mixed martial arts," explained Altavilla of their 10-5-5 minute round format request, "and part of a mixed sport involves not only the traditional striker, which is your kickboxer or boxer, it also involves wrestlers and ground fighters such as jiu-jitsu fighters. The nature of this sport is that it takes longer to set up moves on the ground. We feel that a ten minute first round balances things out between a ground fighter and a striker, not to mention every round starts on the feet so the ground fighter is apparently at a disadvantage to get the other down to get his game going."

"When you look at the 10-5-5 round system, the reasons it's that way is they say it's to give an edge to a grappler. Why are they giving an edge to a grappler?" UFC referee John McCarthy would refute later in the hearing. "Why are they giving an edge to anybody? We don't give edges to anybody. We make things equal. That's the way the sport should be."

"How do you train your judges to judge a 10-5-5?" UFC head Kirk Kendrick asked the Commission in keeping within the 10 point must system California regulations would prescribe to.

Countering Altavilla's support of the gi, McCarthy added, "When it comes to the use of a gi, it needs to be clarified that it's a tool. I'm not saying it's a weapon. It's a tool, and why are we going to give a tool to one fighter when another fighter doesn't have that tool?"

"This is not the UFC versus PRIDE. What this about is uniformity, uniformity to create a real and true lasting sport," Kendrick cited in his prior opening statements. "PRIDE will put on a few shows. UFC will put on a few shows, but what you're going to see is an influx of the medium size and the smaller shows. Those will proliferate throughout your state and what's very important for both PRIDE and the UFC is those shows are done healthy, safely, with referees and judges that know what they're doing, and venues know what they're doing, with ambulances, doctors, everything that you would need to put on a world-class boxing match, that's what we would like you to do."

In addition to debates over the use of round format and fighter equipment, the proposed utilization of a ring drew many comments from the audience. Helpful to PRIDE's cause, numerous martial arts promoters stood up to voice their support for the ring.

"I feel at this time, to give any one entity a year's advantage or a year's jump would be grossly unfair to the other MMA hybrid sport," spoke boxing promoter Roy Englebrecht. "I think both can exist in this state. If all they want to do is tweak a ring, a shoe, let them both be in this state."

"When the UFC started, they had a cage because they wanted to build this 'human cockfighting,' added California-licensed Muay Thai promoter Dennis Warner. "That's why the cage was there, otherwise it would have been a ring." Expressing his interest to promote a combination event to include MMA, Warner also encouraged the Commission to allow for promoter's choice between a ring or a cage.

"I can see the small shows reason for not wanting cages because they're gonna have to get one, but I've reffed a lot of events," retorted UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes compellingly. "When I see any type of momentum in a fight, guys going to the ropes, the first thing I have to do is run to the ropes, piece them together so they don't go over or underneath them."

Weighing the testimony, Chairman Mears then elicited the panel's response, and the motion and vote followed. Sensitive to the timing of this decision, Chairman Mears then called the next Commission meeting for August 29th, the earliest date the board could schedule it following a mandatory 15 days notice period. At this meeting, adverse comments to the action will be heard, and then the Commission will have the choice to either confirm the adoption of the modified rules or reject them.

Interview with Sean Sherk - Back in MMA
By John Buhl

Sean Sherk has not fought since late 2004, and responded to whether he is currently training for the possibility of a return to the octagon, or if he is focusing on teaching other fighters at the academy. “I’m definitely still training. I’m keeping in good shape and working hard. I’d like to come back, but I’m shopping around for a good deal. I’m tired of doing the small shows, you know? I think I’ve paid my dues and earned the right to get a good deal to fight in a big show,” Sherk said. With a 28-1 record (the only blemish being a decision loss to Matt Hughes) it’s hard to disagree with Sherk on that point.

Sean discussed that fight, and the best way to approach Hughes, as one of the few fighters to take Matt the distance. “Yeah, in that fight everyone was saying I should stand with him, but I probably would have been better off focusing on getting the takedown.”

Asked if getting Matt on his back was his weakness, Sherk replied, “That is probably Matt’s weakness, but it is NOT a big weakness. I had him on his back. If you remember the Trigg fight, he had Hughes on his back. But if you watch, he arches his back and puts his hips up, and that keeps his head far away from contact.”

Saul Mitchell chimed in, not shy to point out how much Sherk has improved his game. “People don’t realize this guy has great submissions. When I train with him on the mat, it takes him about ten seconds to pass my guard, and from there he just slaps a submission on me,” Mitchell said.

Saul continued, “His game has really evolved. His stand up too. When people box with him, his combinations are lightening-quick. His hips look like they’re on a swivel. Guys take a few shots from him and suddenly they don’t feel so good.”

So the MMA world has been warned: Sherk is active, ready, and even better than before. Here’s to hoping someone gives him the deal he deserves.

Liddell to take on Horn at UFC 54: Boiling Point
By Keith Evans

Chuck 'The Iceman' Liddell will look to avenge the first loss of his career and defend his UFC light heavyweight crown in the process when he takes on challenger Jeremy Horn at UFC 54: Boiling Point this August 20th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Also on the card is a huge matchup between Randy 'The Natural' Couture and Mike Van Arsdale. World class fighters Frank Trigg, Georges "Rush" St-Pierre and "The Nightmare" Diego Sanchez also battle on this card, which will be available LIVE on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT, on iN DEMAND, DIRECTV, DISH Network, TVN, Bell ExpressVu and Viewer's Choice Canada for a suggested retail price of $34.95.

GRUDGE MATCH
Liddell (16-3-0) is fresh off his big win over previous light heavyweight champ Couture at UFC 52, but he'll have one thing on his mind when facing Horn: revenge. That's because Liddell's first career loss (March 5, 1999, at UFC 19) came when Horn, a longtime veteran of mixed martial arts with a record of 85-13-5, executed a first-round arm triangle choke on the future champion. So UFC 54 provides a chance for Liddell to wipe the slate clean against his old nemesis. But Horn's well-rounded skills and versatility will present a tough challenge for the champ in what should be a match for the ages.

THE REBOUND
Couture (13-7-0)--the only man to win UFC titles in two separate weight classes-- is looking to climb his way back into title contention in the light heavyweight division. 'The Natural' is one of the most popular figures fighting in the UFC today. He'll have his hands full with Van Arsdale (8-1-0), a world-class wrestler and athlete who hasn't lost in almost seven years

WELTERWEIGHT SHOWDOWN
Two of the best welterweights in the world collide as Trigg (12-3-0) and St-Pierre (9-1-0) go head to head to determine who will advance in the rankings. Trigg has angered the normally reserved St-Pierre with his prefight comments and St-Pierre promises to make him pay.

THE NIGHTMARE MAKES PAY PER VIEW DEBUT
Ultimate Fighter winner Sanchez (14 - 0) makes his UFC pay per view debut against dangerous striker Brian "Mandingo" Gassaway (18-9-3). Sanchez is undefeated but will have his hands full with the very experienced Gassaway.

TICKETS
Tickets priced at $400, $300, $200, $100 and $50, for the all-star, eight-fight card go on sale at 10 a.m. PT, Monday, June 6, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena box office, all Ticketmaster locations, www.ticketmaster.com, www.mgmgrand.com and by telephone at 800-929-1111 or 702-891-7777. UFN PREVIEW: SALAVERRY VS MARQUARDT
by Ken Pishna

The main event of the UFC’s first live, full-card event on SpikeTV, Ivan Salaverry and Nathan Marquardt has come under fire by some as to its worthiness of that status. That is primarily because Salaverry, though he has fought many times in the UFC, hasn’t been seen much on recent pay-per-view broadcasts. Also, this is Marquardt’s first fight in the UFC, as he is usually fighting for Pancrase in Japan. Other than a lack of exposure in the United States, there is no other reason for this fight not to be considered a main event.

Salaverry has been on a tear recently and is easily only one or two wins away from a title shot. In his last two outings, he has reeled off submissions over both Tony Fryklund and Joe “Diesel” Riggs. With an overall record of 12-4, Salaverry is no slouch. In fact, his only loss in the UFC is to top-ranked contender Matt Lindland.

He may not be all that well known in the United States, but Salaverry’s opponent, Nathan Marquardt, is a superstar in Japan. Fighting under the Pancrase banner, he has achieved heights that no other fighter in the world has attained. He is the only fighter ever to become the King of Pancrase seven times. Not even luminaries such as Frank Shamrock, Bas Rutten, or Ken Shamrock have held the King of Pancrase distinction that many times.

Of course, all the stats in the world won’t convince some people, but what transpires when these two enter the cage on Saturday night should leave everyone convinced of their worthiness of the main event.

At 21-6-2, Marquardt does have the experience advantage over Salaverry, but they have both fought enough times in big enough fights that experience probably won’t be the decisive factor.

They both train with excellent teams. Salaverry trains primarily with Matt Hume and Josh Barnett in Washington, as well as other fighters like Frank Trigg and Tito Ortiz. Marquardt is also big on working with strong training partners. He has trained with various individuals in Japan and also with Team Quest in the United States. More recently, he has joined Greg Jackson’s fight team in New Mexico. Jackson’s team is just starting to scratch the surface with fighters such as Diego Sanchez, Keith Jardine, Joey Villasenor, now Marquardt, and many more gaining in popularity.

So who does the edge go to in this fight? That is a tough call. Both are very well rounded fighters. Both fighters are very active in submission attempts on the ground, but a slight edge probably goes to Salaverry. In the stand up game, Marquardt is probably has a bit of an advantage if only because he has a more powerful build than Salaverry and has seemed more inclined to go to blows. The edge in takedowns would probably also go to Marquardt as he trained for a long time with wrestlers such as Ron Waterman in Colorado and now with Jackson’s in New Mexico.

This is probably one of the most difficult fights on the card to pick a winner. Though the odds makers are heavily favoring Salaverry, much of that is probably due to a lack of familiarity with Marquardt’s game. Marquardt has been burning to be in the UFC for years, that is a deep desire that is difficult to weigh into the scheme of things, but could give him that little extra drive. But as balanced as these two are, it really is anyone’s fight. Whoever makes the first mistake, will likely be going home the loser.

Ultimate Fighters™ Will Be Unleashed in Octagon for First-Ever Ultimate Fight Night

Las Vegas, NV (August 1, 2005) --The Octagon™ unleashes a fury when the Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) organization holds the first-ever “Ultimate Fight Night,” a nationally-televised event on Spike TV featuring fighters from the hit reality series “The Ultimate Fighter™.” Stephan Bonnar, Sam Hoger, Alex Karalexis and Kenny Florian will be pitted against each other, and Chris Leben, Nate Quarry and Josh Koscheck will face-off with Patrick Cote, Pete Sell and Pete Spratt in a soon-to-be classic UFC event live on Spike TV from Las Vegas’ Cox Pavilion Saturday, August 6, 2005. The live action starts at 7:15 p.m. EST/4:15 p.m. PST and Spike TV’s telecast starts at 6:00 p.m. EST/PST

VINDICATION MATCH
Stephan Bonnar vs Sam Hoger (Light Heavyweights)
More than two and a half million viewers watched Stephan “American Psycho” Bonnar (9-2) fight like a warrior for three five-minute rounds before a close-call decision went to opponent Forrest Griffin. Working up the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills he learned from the legendary Carlson Gracie, Bonnar intends to vindicate himself by sending Sam “the Alaskan Assassin” Hoger (5-0) to the mat. Hoger, who trains with the renowned Pat Miletich team, is predicting a different outcome and intends to devastate Bonnar using his superior stand up martial arts skills.

WELTERWEIGHT WARRIOR MATCH
Alex Karalexis vs Kenny Florian (Welterweights)
Alex “The Assassin” Karalexis (5-0), set the precedent for his upcoming bout against Kenny “Ken-Flo” Florian (4-2) when he TKO’d Josh Rafferty in the first two minutes of the first round of the undercard of The Ultimate Fighter finale. A dangerous striker with knockout power, Karalexis will definitely need his stand-up martial arts skills against the polished ground-fighter and jiu-jitsu black belt Florian.

Patrick Cote vs Chris Leben (Middleweights)
Despite his controversial antics during the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, Chris “The Crippler” Leben (11-1) has proved himself a force to be reckoned with inside the Octagon. Holding a strong professional record, Leben will need all of his experience to challenge Canadian MMA champion Patrick “The Predator” Cote (6-2-0). Cote, a knockout artist, is hungry to make a name for himself in the UFC organization and plans to do so at Leben’s expense.

Pete Spratt vs Josh Koscheck (Welterweights)
Already considered a top-flight wrestler, Josh Koscheck (5-0) possesses raw athletic talent and precision timing on the mat. Praised by the coaches of The Ultimate Fighter for his skills, Koscheck will find a foe of epic proportions with Pete “The Secret Weapon” Spratt (14-7-0). Described as a Dangerous striker with a Muay Thai base, Spratt renders instant knockouts with punches, kicks, knees or elbows. Spratt, who stopped “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler at UFC 42, plans to take Koscheck to school and teach him a few hard-knock lessons inside the Octagon.

Gideon Ray vs Mike Swick (Middleweights)
Scoring an intense 20-second knockout on The Ultimate Fighter finale, Mike “Quick” Swick (7-1) made good on his fight moniker and is plotting a similar attack when he meets Gideon 'The Gladiator' Ray (15-2-1). Currently training under UFC veteran Keith “The Giant Killer” Hackney, Gideon intends to
unload his famous striking techniques and render Swick a quick KO. With rival stand-up skills, both fighters are expected to strike at will and finish the bout by knockout.

Josh Neer vs Drew Fickett (Welterweights)
Determined to make his first-ever UFC fight a success, Josh “The Dentist” Neer (13-1-1) will enter the Octagon as an aggressive fighter who can swiftly handle an opponent by submission or knockout. Using a combination of wrestling and Muay Thai disciplines, Neer will take on Drew “The Master” Fickett (26-3-0), who considers himself one of the most well-rounded fighters in the world. Coming off months of intense conditioning and complex training, Fickett wants to defeat Neer and show the world he has the makings of a UFC champion.

Nate Quarry vs Pete Sell (Middleweights)
Nathan “Rock” Quarry (13-1) is on the fast track to UFC fame with his TKO of Lodune Sincaid at the Ultimate Fighter finale and recent TKO of veteran fighter Shonie Carter at UFC 53. Quarry has earned the reputation as a striker with a versatile set of submission skills. Pete “Drago” Sell, (6-0-0) a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt trained by UFC veteran Matt “The Terror” Serra, was the first man to ever submit the very tough “New York Bad Ass” Phil Baroni. Sell is ready to show that he can take on Quarry and become the best middleweight in the division.

Nate Marquardt vs Ivan Salaverry (Middleweights)
The only man to be crowned a seven time-champion of one of Japan's oldest fighting organizations, Nate “The Great” Marquardt (24-6-1) will find himself against Ivan Salaverry (11-3-1) inside the Octagon August 6. Marquardt, who prides himself on his versatility and lion-hearted fighting style, will utilize the full potential of his world class striking and take-down skills to handle his opponent. Salaverry, coming off wins against Andrei Semenov, Tony Fryklund and Joe Riggs, is considered one of the most talented middleweights in the world. He has plans to become a challenger for the UFC middleweight title, and has no intention to let Marquardt derail that goal.

TICKETS
Tickets are priced at $300, $100 and $30 for UFC’s Ultimate Fight Night and are available at the Cox Pavilion box office, at www.unlvtickets.com, or by calling 866.388.3267. Card subject to change and some bouts may not be shown due to time constraints.

HAS BIG DADDY FINALLY ARRIVED?

Much of the K-1 Grand Prix Hawaii tournament was overshadowed by the anticipation of the main event of BJ Penn and Renzo Gracie. Not that it was all that surprising seeing as how Penn is currently the most popular fighter in Hawaii.

But the performance of Canadian fighter “Big Daddy” Gary Goodridge should not be overlooked. In a very difficult tournament format, he had to go through three world-class fighters in one night. Goodridge dominated every fight, not letting any of the three go to a decision.

In his first bout, he weathered the initial barrage of another Hawaiian favorite, Wesley “Cabbage” Correira, before dismantling him with a gargantuan right hand and thunderous leg kicks that toppled Cabbage to the mat. He then moved on and used Cabbage’s quick start technique to take Carter Williams out before he could ever get going.

In the tournament final, Goodridge was maybe at his most impressive. He started fast and looked as if he might take Yusuke Fujimoto, one of the premier K-1 fighters in the world right now, out in the first round. Fujimoto somehow lasted the round and then took the fight to Goodridge in the second round and was the first fighter to truly mount a damaging attack on him. But it was once again Goodridge that came out buzzing and thoroughly dismantled Fujimoto in the third round, punishing him before the Japanese fighter’s corner threw in the towel.

What is most impressive with the tournament victory is how Goodridge has turned his career around since essentially retiring from mixed martial arts after his last bout with Don Frye. He has gone on to dedicate the majority of his fight career to the K-1 kickboxing format and has steadily improved ever since. The tournament victory was the culmination of that rededication.

In Cabbage, Williams, and Fujimoto, he defeated three legitimate contenders in the K-1 format, especially Williams and Fujimoto. With the win, Goodridge earned his place in the World Grand Prix Elimination in Osaka, Japan in September. In Osaka, he will join an even more elite class that will include such K-1 luminaries as Peter Aerts, Remy Bonjasky, Ernesto Hoost, Ray Sefo, Musashi, and more.

The World GP Elimination is a one-match elimination format that will see the winners move on to the Tokyo Dome Final. This will definitely be an even bigger challenge for Goodridge, but whether he wins there or not, he has definitely established himself on the K-1 scene.

His style is not highly refined, but he is reminiscent of former K-1 champion Mark Hunt in the punishment that he can take and delivers blows with destructive power that is nearly unmatched. Come September, we’ll see if he can move on to Tokyo and join the truly elite in K-1. From there, who knows?

Inventing a better life. A local entrepreneur teaches others how to turn their great ideas into lucrative and marketable products
By Nancy Arcayna
narcayna@starbulletin.com
Tuesday, August 2, 2005

Daynin Dashefsky usually comes up with invention ideas right before falling asleep. Some that actually made it to shelves of stores such as FAO Schwarz include, from left, Hair Care'rousel, Jewelry Care'rousel and Nail Care'rousel. Her daughter, Briana, right, dries her nails as sister Kylee watches.

As a single mom of two daughters, Daynin Dashefsky needed to be creative in blending work and family life, so she started inventing and selling her own products. Now, she's conducting workshops to help others fulfill their dream of bringing their own products to market.

MARKETING SEMINAR
"How to Make and Bring Your Product to Market"
When: 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday
Where: Ala Moana Hotel
Admission: $200 in advance; $250 at the door
Call: 263-8160
For more information on the seminar click
here!

Dashefsky's first invention was born at a barbecue at her mother's home in Nanakuli. Her mom was fanning flies away with a coconut leaf and commented that whoever made something to keep flies from food would make millions.

"That is when I got my first invention idea, the 'No Fly Zone,'" Dashefsky said. "It's a battery-operated canister with streaming silk leaves that keeps the flies away from your food when eating outdoors. It also rotates mosquito coils and incense," she said. "That is the product that launched my career and taught me more than I ever thought possible."

Since then, ideas randomly pop into her head, especially during the night. "The hardest part of having a creative mind and being an entrepreneur is shutting off your mind," she said. "Sometimes when I'm between being awake and being asleep, my best ideas pop into my head."

Her daughters might follow in her footsteps.

"They love coming up with inventions and ideas," she said. Her Nail Care'rousel set her younger daughter Briana, 7, thinking about a machine that would paint your finger and toe nails.

Some of their ideas are "way out there," Dashefsky admits, but she appreciates that the girls are using their imagination.

The "Care'rousel" line -- Hair Care'rousel, Nail Care'rousel and Jewelry Care'rousel -- allow girls to organize accessories by type, style, color and matching pairs. The items came to be when Dashefsky was trying to help her daughters conquer clutter.

"My toys teach children early on how to organize their things in a fun way, in the hopes it carries over into other areas of their lives."

Dashefsky's products are sold throughout the world by companies such as Wal-Mart, FAO Schwarz, Toys "R" Us, Longs, Daiei and the Lillian Vernon catalog.

"First and foremost, my job is making sure I can feed my kids and put a roof over their heads. I grew up in Nanakuli on welfare, and I wanted a better life and better opportunities for my children," Dashefsky said. "In order to give them those things, I had to make sacrifices."

One of the first things would-be inventors and entrepreneurs must know is that far from the dream of setting one's own hours, taking long lunches and conducting business at poolside, running a business requires strict discipline and enormous time and energy, she explained.

Working at home meant "it was so easy to always be working. There were always challenges and fires to put out."

Also, creating products involved making many trips to China. "It was difficult to always be at every soccer game, every school event and every milestone moment in (my daughters') lives. My being gone so much and being so busy all of the time was affecting my children," Dashefsky said.

Thus her switch to teaching the trade. "It gives me more time to focus on my kids while they are still young. They grow up so fast, and these are important years for them."

THE MOST challenging facet of entrepreneurship was funding her dreams. "Money was always the problem, issue and challenge. The more money I made, the more money I needed to keep going and growing," she said. "People don't realize that when a big chain store orders product from you, you have to pay to have that product built and shipped, but you don't get paid from the customer for 30 to 120 days."

Another reason she chose to teach others to design, patent, produce and sell their own products is so she can help them avoid being scammed by infomercials that promise their inventions will be brought to market. All someone can expect after writing to such a program is a letter back requesting thousands of dollars to produce and market a product.

"In the end, all you get for your hard-earned money is a box full of books and tapes telling you how to do it yourself," Dashefsky said.

"At the seminar, I'll show the step-by-step process so people can avoid making the same mistakes most inventors make."

But her most important advice: "It is more important to believe in yourself than in your product. Products come and go. Banks and investors don't invest in products; they invest in people. I cannot emphasize that enough."

Along with her interest in inventing, Dashefsky is an avid fan and competitor in Brazilian jiujitsu. She writes a column for Bodyguard magazine, "The Stronger Sex." Her latest business venture is the Ultimate Impact Benefit, scheduled for March in Hollywood, during which some of the best fighters will be auctioned off for one-on-one training sessions. The money raised will help get troubled youths off the streets and back in school.

"I do things because I love to do them ... they mean something to me," said Dashefsky. "I try to encourage people to go after their dreams, no matter what other people tell them."

Yves Edwards is on a roll. He will take a seven fight win streak with him into the up coming Pride lightweight grand prix tournament. He recently spoke with MMAWeekly about the tournament and who'd he'd like to fight in it.

Asked who he'll be fighting next, Yves Edwards replied, "I'm waiting for them to seed this tournament, and be sure they still want me in it. That's the plan as far as I've heard, so I'm just looking forward to that. I don't know, I'll probably get one of the two Japanese guys, Gomi or Kawajiri. Then again they might turn around and put me in there with a Brazilian. You just never know."

Questioned who he'd like to fight, Yves said, "Everybody. I want them all. I don't care." He continued, "The first night we're going to fight twice. There will be two fights the first night. The finals are going to be a single fight. Ideally, I mean, I'd like to fight Gomi and Kawajiri in the same night. You know? There's the three of us, I mean Hansen's in it too, so...any one guy that beats any two of those guys on the same night, you become a legend."

Some fighters would want to face the top guys later in the tournament to better their chances in advancing, and better their chances at bigger payouts, but not Yves Edwards. He wants to take out two of the favorites in the first night.

WIUFF, HUERTA & SHONIE ROLL IN IFC RENO

It was indeed a “Rock ‘N Rumble” night this past Saturday, July 30th as the Reno Events Center in Reno, NV hosted the city’s first MMA show in nearly a year when the IFC and Tuff ‘N Uff Productions teamed up to produce a night full of action. The event showcased local talent, UFC veterans, and three ISKA-MMA Championship bouts in front of a packed house in an evening that featured finishes in six out of eight fights.

In the night’s main event, Travis “Diesel” Wiuff, now training out of Jeremy Horn’s Elite Performance in Utah, defeated a clearly undersized, but game, Bill “The Truth” Hill to capture the ISKA-MMA World Light-Heavyweight title. Hill, who had lost to Horn twice at middleweight, had weighed the previous day comfortably at 198lbs compared to Wiuff who had weighed in at the limit of 205lbs and was closer to 220lbs when he entered the cage, and the size difference showed.

Wiuff wasted no time in clinching with Hill, taking him down and dominating position throughout the first round. For his part Hill managed to work his way out from underneath Travis a couple of times only to get taken right back down for more punishment. Hill’s best offense came when he had a guillotine choke on Wiuff from underneath on the ground, but it didn’t last long. Travis managed to stand up with Hill desperately trying to hold the guillotine, pause for a second to allow the crowd to ooh and ahh, and proceeded slam Hill down hard onto the canvas allowing the Minnesota native to escape the submission.

From there it was downhill fast for Hill as Wiuff pinned Bill against the cage and proceeded to slice open Hill’s head with punches and elbows. As the round came to an end, Hill got up from the small pool of blood that had begun to collect on the mat beneath his head, and walk over to his corner where the doctors proceeded to check the severity of his cuts. After a few seconds of deliberation it was ruled that Hill would not be allowed to continue and Wiuff was given the victory and the belt via TKO after Round 1.

Wiuff continues to look very good at 205lbs and after continued training with Horn in Utah it might not be long before Travis returns to join Jeremy in the UFC or heads overseas to a company looking to add a strong, reliable presence to their light-heavyweight ranks.

The show’s other two undercard title matches couldn’t have been more the opposite. In the evening’s first title match, extremely impressive ATT Olympia heavyweight Fabiano Schrener defeated an uninspired Aaron Brink for the ISKA-MMA Americas Heavyweight Championship in just 50 seconds. Fabiano and Brink locked up shortly after the opening bell rang and after some scrambling for position on the ground, ended up back on their feet where Schrener locked on a guillotine choke and pulled guard to finish Aaron off in quick fashion.

Things weren’t so fast and easy for the night’s lightest title match as Team Extreme’s Roger Huerta, a last minute replacement for Tony Fryklund, defeated a very tough “Bad” Brad Blackburn of ATT Olympia/Victory Athletics via TKO at 3:19 of Round 3 for the ISKA-MMA Welterweight Championship.

Huerta, normally a lightweight, fought at 170lbs due getting the fight on just a few day’s notice and went toe to toe with Blackburn throughout the first two rounds of the fight. Both fighters exchanged solid strikes standing with the slight edge going to Blackburn due to Huerta looking a little rusty after a four month layoff. When it came to grappling however Huerta showed why he’s one the fastest rising young American fighters on the scene by slamming Brad multiple times to the crowd’s delight, conversely avoiding damage on the ground, and attempting multiple submissions.

In the third round Huerta stepped it up a notch and took down Blackburn immediately and proceeded to mount and rain down shots to Brad’s face. Blackburn showed heart and true warrior’s spirit, as he never gave up while desperately trying to escape Roger’s relentless assault, but in the end Blackburn’s corner could take no more and threw in the towel. With the win Huerta claimed the first of what should be many title belts to come in his very promising career.

In other notable action, UFC vet Jay Hieron, now of Marc Laimon’s Cobra Kai Jiu-Jitsu in Las Vegas, took a unanimous decision from Pat Healy. Hieron showed why he has fought in the UFC by looking impressive in the first two rounds of the fight, effectively mixing up strikes, slams, and the ground game before fending off a late surge from Healy in the third round.

Fellow UFC veteran “Mr. International” Shonie Carter also pulled off a unanimous decision victory over former heavyweight Josh “Bring The Pain” Haynes in a fight at 205lbs. Carter’s veteran skills allowed him to land more strikes and stay in dominant position throughout the majority the three round fight. Haynes looked good coming down in weight and after further seasoning could become a solid contender in the light-heavyweight division.

Finally, Reno’s own Richard Montoya, representing the American Kickboxing Academy, defeated Chris Kiever of Jeremy Horn’s Elite Performance via TKO in the evening’s biggest comeback. Montoya, whose ground game has been criticized in the past, looked to be in trouble early against Kiever, and managed to stave off no less than half a dozen rear naked choke attempts before mounting Kiever and finishing him off with only 11 seconds remaining in the first round.

Full Event Results:

Chris Botello defeated Steven Rivenbark via TKO (Referee Stoppage) at 1:12 of Round 1
Richard Montoya defeated Chris Kiever via TKO (Referee Stoppage) at 4:49 of Round 1
Jeremy Peterson defeated Rocky Batastini via TKO (Referee Stoppage) at 3:40 of Round 1
Jay Hieron defeated Pat Healy via Unanimous Decision
Shonie Carter defeated Josh Haynes via Unanimous Decision
Fabiano Schrener defeated Aaron Brink via Submission (Guillotine Choke) at :50 of Round 1
Roger Huerta defeated Brad Blackburn via TKO (Corner Threw in the Towel) at 3:19 of Round 3
Travis Wiuff defeated Bill Hill via TKO (Doctor Stoppage Due to Cuts) at 5:00 of Round 1

BATTLE OF BOSTON: FLORIAN VS KARALEXIS

When Kenny Florian won his fight with Chris Leben in the semi-finals of the “Ultimate Fighter” people started to notice the one time lightweight fighter from Boston. Florian was probably the most undersized fighter in the 185lb division, but took the opportunity because as everyone on the show knew, it was a once in a lifetime shot at an automatic chance to get into the UFC. Florian, who is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, got his shot to win the entire competition when he took on Diego Sanchez in the finale.

Diego Sanchez, who fought more than anyone else during the show, was also somewhat undersized for a 185lb fighter, but definitely had the strength advantage when he took on Florian in their fight. Although Florian looked ready and had enough time to prepare for his fight with Sanchez, he was simply overmatched. The New Mexico native didn’t take much time to put Florian on his back and pound away at him.

A vicious strike reminiscent of the one that Florian unleashed to end Chris Leben’s run at the championship, landed flush on the bridge of Kenny’s nose, leaving him bloody and gasping for air. A few more shots from the mount and the referee had no choice but to pull Diego off of Florian and with that the first winner of the “Ultimate Fighter” was crowned and the hopeful from Boston who originally wasn’t even slated to be on the show walked out defeated.

Kenny Florian was obviously disappointed in his performance, but he knew that with the right time and training he could step back into the octagon and be a winner. His opponent on the August 6th show doesn’t have very much experience in MMA, but he definitely has the right attitude to be a success.

Alex Karalexis, another Boston kid, stepped into the “Ultimate Fighter” as one of the most untested fighters on the show. Having only a handful of fights before the show started, most people didn’t give Karalexis much of a shot when he started. Despite the fact that he had much less experience, he seemed ready to take a shot at Diego Sanchez when he was picked as his opponent during one of the first fights on the show. Karalexis came out swinging for the fences but when the fight hit the ground it was very apparent that his game was still lacking some fundamentals.

Sanchez worked away at Karalexis from the top position and eventually Alex turned over giving the submission specialist an opening he was looking for. Diego sunk in a deep rear naked choke and Karalexis had no other choice but to tap out. When Alex Karalexis got his shot at redemption when he took on another of Diego’s victims from the show, he didn’t take long to dispatch of Cincinnati native, Josh Rafferty.

Rafferty, who trains with current UFC middleweight champion, Rich Franklin, tried to stand with Karalexis, but shortly into the first round he attempted to take the fight to the ground, instead Karalexis reigned down on him with punches. Stopping at one point to look at the referee as if to motion that Rafferty was dazed, Karalexis finished the fight with one more shot to the face. Karalexis was victorious in his second attempt into the octagon, and now he will try to make it two in a row against Kenny Florian.

This fight has the opportunity to be a classic grappler vs. striker match-up. Florian, the submission specialist has great ground skill but didn’t mind standing up with Chris Leben in their fight, managing to take several tough shots and not going down. Karalexis is very heavy handed and the biggest test that this fight has is which fighter has learned more in the last few months. Will Karalexis be able to keep the fight standing if Florian works for multiple takedowns, and if the fight does get to the ground, can he keep from being submitted by a Jiu-Jitsu black belt fighter? Will the fight against Diego Sanchez in the live finale leave Florian rattled for this match-up as well? Both fighters will be trying to make their mark when they meet in Las Vegas on August 6th.
