The Baret Yoshida - Royler Gracie fight is off!

The contract could not be agreed to and Baret Yoshida has declined the fight. He has been dedicating himself to submission grappling matches and was not planning on competing in MMA for a while. Baret was concentrating on Abu Dhabi when he was offered the fight with Royler. Due to this and not coming to an agreement financially, he decided not to take the fight.

GRACIES INVADE RUMBLE ON THE ROCK

Last week, MMAWeekly Radio had BJ Penn on the program. Penn alluded to the fact that he would take on a fighter who weighed 185 pounds. Now it's official.

Kid Peligro, the Jiujitsu Editor for ADCC and Gracie black belt, broke the news that Rodrigo Gracie has signed to fight BJ Penn at the next Rumble on the Rock show as has been rumored. In addition, Royler Gracie will be facing Baret Yoshida on the same show on November 20th.

After losing his bout to stop the Matt Hughes and Georges St. Pierre fight at UFC 50 from being for a title, Penn vowed that he would do whatever it took to build Rumble on the Rock up to rival the UFC. He's still got a long way to go, but he and his brother J.D. Penn have consistently taken steps towards improving the show.

The addition of not one, but two Gracies is a big step in the right direction. Rodrigo Gracie is a little bit short on experience, but he sports a perfect record of 5-0 against solid competition. Rodrigo has wins over fighters like Daijiro Matsui, Daiju Takase, and Hayato "Mach" Sakurai. He comes from the more MMA focused part of the Gracie family, Team Renzo Gracie, and should provide some very tough competition for BJ Penn.

This is still a big fight for Penn and would help him solidify himself as one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world.

The addition of Royler Gracie and Baret Yoshida is a big fight as well. Royler is considered one of the most technically proficient fighters out of the Gracie clan. He is coming off of a crushing defeat at the hands of Genki Sudo at the inaugural K-1 Romanex show and looking to reestablish himself.

Yoshida is a decent MMA fighter, but is coming off of two straight losses and will have a difficult time changing the direction of his career in this fight with Royler. The two have faced each other before in the Abu Dhabi tournaments with Royler coming out on top without much difficulty.

These two fights are in addition to the already known bout between Joe "Diesel" Riggs and Niko Vitale.

Penn, Riggs, and Vitale are all UFC veterans. Both of the Gracies are Pride veterans. It is obvious that Penn is working hard to make good on his hopes to build his promotion to be one of the best.

ADCC trial Brazil search for fighters

Accepting subscriptions until end of October, the first trial for ADCC 2005 is searching for fighters over 99kg. According to Leandro Ribeiro, Submission de Campos promoter who is responsible for this first trial, the number of heavyweight fighters is still not enough to fill up the bracket.

There are only one from Pernambuco -, revealed a concerned Ribeiro, who enjoys the chance to invite fighters. "If you a blue belt, purple belt and want to fight among the over 99kg, come to Campos dos Goytacazes and represent your state".

To subscribe, please send an email to adcc2004@bol.com.br, diretoria@submissionwrestling.com.br or cbkb@cbkb.net (Leandro Ribeiro). The competition will have at most 32 athletes by division (under 66kg, under 77kg, under 88kg, under 99kg and over 99kg). The best four in each weight will be classified to dispute the final phase, in São Paulo.

Royce bets on Minotauro against Fedor
by: Luca Atalla with Rafael Werneck

Always busy, conducting a lot of seminars all around the U.S, Royce Gracie didn´t have time to watch the Pride´s GP heavyweight decision that took place in August. However, the Jiu-Jitsu star is aware of what is going on with Rodrigo Minotauro Nogueira and Fedor Emelianenko and told us what he thinks about the controversial 'No Contest' declared by the Pride´s promoters after the accidental headbutt between the two fighters.

´I haven´t seen the fight, but according to the people who told me what happened, I think Minotauro should be declared the GP champion. If Emelianenko couldn´t keep fighting after the headbutt he should lost the bout. However, I talked to the Pride´s promoters and they told me that there was a special rule that states if something unusual happens in the first round, the 'No Contest' should be declared. In this case, the mistake was made by those who accepted this rule´, said Royce.

The Gracie bets on Minotauro in the next fight, initially schedule to be realized on December 31st. 'Minotauro is the toughest guy around. Despite the defeat to Fedor in the first fight between them (unanimous decision at Pride 25), I believe he is the one who will be the champion. At this moment, Minotauro is the hottest fighter there is', finishes Royce, who should be back to the rings in December.

M-1 Update - Gassaway out, Shoney Carter in!!!
by: Marcello Tetel

The weather in cold St Petersburg, Russia has started to get hotter, as Friday the 8th saw the rules meeting and press conference for the M-1 Mix Fight's 8 man tournament.

All the fighters have already checked in, with the only surprise being the absence of American Brian Gassaway due to visa problems. The replacement couldn't be better for the show, however! Scheduled to be Gassaway's cornerman, Shonie Carter has accepted the challenge and will be competing in this tournament.

The Russian media is all about the show in beautifull St Petersburg. Andrey Semenov is, of course, considered the favorite by the local press. Semenov stated that this doesn't add any pressure, and he seems very relaxed. He is always smiling during the press conference. Brazilian Flavio Moura looks in shape to take on Japanese fighter Kazuki Okubo. Brazilian Top Team's Marcelo Alfaya is another receiving consideration for the finals. HE has been on Russian soil since last weekend to get more familiar with the cold weather and to take off the 7 hours jat lag.

The highly anticipated superfight between Carlos Barreto and Red Devil's Alexander Emilianenko also got a lot of attention from the media. M-1 is getting major attention from the local media and promoters are expecting a crowded arena next Saturday!

Stay tuned for more news as it develops...

Ximu vs Allan Goes is heating up!
by: Luca Atalla

The contracts are not signed yet, but the challenge between Gustavo Ximu and Allan Goes, expected to be part of the Jungle Fight Championship 3 has already began. From the Gracie Barra Combat Team headquarters, in Rio, Ximu provoked the rival. 'I´m ready to knock him down and finish the job I started at the Heat 2', states Ximu, in reference of the first fight against Goes held in december of 2003, when Allan abandoned the bout after contesting the referee's decision.

According to the promoter Wallid Ismail, the invitation to Allan Goes fight at Jungle has been made, and he is waiting for an answer from the Brazilian Top Team athlete. But according to the BTT leader Ze Mario Sperry, Goes may not be confirmed to fight at the Jungle 3 because Wallid´s first proposal was lower than they expect. 'We are looking for a fair purse to a fighter like Allan', says Ze Mario.

The last time Allan Goes steped into a ring was coincidently against Ximu at the Heat 2, therefore, he hasn´t fight in 2004 yet, differently from Ximu, who fought at Meca XI, on June 5th in Teresopolis, when defeated Nilson de Castro, from Chute Boxe, by judges decision.

Excited with the card's development, Wallid Ismail wants to give an international flavor to his event, and because of that he is trying to confirm a fight between Jeferson Tank, the newest member of Vitor Belfort Training Team, and the famous wrestler Tom Erikson, whose last MMA appearance was in December of 2002, when he submitted Tim Catalfo via rear naked choke at Pride 19.

DON KING BLASTS HBO:
'I'M A HOMELESS PROMOTER'

by: Eddie Goldman/ADCC Wrestling Editor

On the heels of his blistering comments about HBO last Saturday night after the Trinidad-Mayorga fight, controversial boxing promoter Don King has issued a formal press release once again criticizing HBO, the pay cable arm of Time Warner.

This follows the announcement by HBO that this fight only got approximately 420,000 pay-per-view buys in the U.S.

Here, courtesy of Don King Productions, is his latest statement.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Oct. 8, 2004

Don King, 'a Homeless Promoter,' Looking for New Broadcast Partner

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla.- Don King states that prior to the electrifying comeback fight of Felix 'Tito' Trinidad against Ricardo 'El Matador' Mayorga on Oct. 2 at Madison Square Garden, he complained to executives at HBO Sports that the event was not receiving the marketing and promotional effort it deserved.

King stated, 'They gave Bob Arum six months to promote Oscar De La Hoya vs. Bernard Hopkins, and they gave me six days to promote Trinidad vs. Mayorga - the fight of the year.'

'HBO Pay-Per-View was short-sighted in giving De La Hoya vs. Hopkins the big push, and subsequently short changed their subscribers by not adequately promoting Trinidad vs. Mayorga. I think they took this action because I was involved in the fight. I feel like a homeless promoter.'

HBO Sports announced yesterday that Trinidad vs. Mayorga generated 420,000 pay-per-view buys. Senior Vice President HBO Pay-Per-View Mark Taffet said, 'the fight performed within our expectations.'

'It certainly did not perform up to my expectations,' King said. 'That fight would have done double that had it been promoted properly.'

King gave HBO, then known as Home Box Office, its first heavyweight world title match when he spurned an $800,000 bid from ABC and accepted HBO's $125,000 offer for the Larry Holmes vs. Mike Weaver bout at Madison Square Garden on June 22, 1979.

'I turned out to be crazy like a fox on that one,' King said, 'and I can and will do it again if we don't receive the respect my fighters and I deserve.'

King is rarely interviewed on HBO telecasts, unless something controversial occurs at a King-promoted event. HBO gives the same treatment to the sanctioning bodies that award world titles to champions in the various weight divisions in boxing.

'I have remained silent about my lack of air time and the way they ignore the World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council, International Boxing Federation and other organizations hiding behind the veil of journalistic integrity,' King said. 'What they are doing is diminishing the sport of boxing to serve their own selfish interests to control the fight
game.'

'HBO is misguided if they think they are better at promoting than Don King. They should leave the promotion to the promoters and focus their energies on providing the best telecast for their viewers, period.'

King contends boxing fans around the world like to know which fighters hold titles from the sanctioning organizations and to hear from the colorful promoters, like himself, the man who has done more than anyone to promote the sport of boxing while staging events like the Rumble in the Jungle, Thrilla in Manila and promoting Mike Tyson, Larry Holmes, Roberto Duran and Julio Cesar Chavez at the peak of their careers.

'Look at wrestling,' King says, seriously. 'The whole endeavor is based on myths, and their fans can't get enough of it. Then there's HBO, who will not even tell you that a fighter is a WBA, WBC or IBF champion. They denigrate these world champion boxers by referring to them only as 'belt-holders,' and they treat me like I'm not even there.

'Don't they understand they're killing the goose that laid the golden egg.'

COFFEE GUY EXCLUSIVE: TITO DUCKS VITOR
By Coffee Guy

Before reading any further, please read our disclaimer first.

The following exclusive report was sent to us by our Zuffa informant called 'Coffee Guy':

Another reason the UFC Japan was cancelled was because Zuffa could not sign Tito Ortiz to face Vitor Belfort for a main event. Tito wanted no part of Vitor so soon after his upcoming fight against Guy Mezger.

Once Tito pulled out, Zuffa actually tried to sign Ken Shamrock vs. Vitor. That didn't work out either as Shamrock is still recovering from shoulder surgery.

Zuffa's official statement that Frank Mir not being able to participate being the reason for UFC Japan's cancellation was just the final straw.

The truth is that their attempted venture into the Japanese market had so many blunders and mishaps, that most people in the Zuffa offices already felt it was a doomed project from the start.

Quote of the Day

"There's no such thing as Perfection. But, in striving for perfection, we can achieve excellence."

Vince Lombardi, 1913-1970, American Football Coach

Melendez signs at ROTR

Gilbert Melendez has agreed to fight at the
Rumble on the Rock on November the 20th. His opponent will be B.J. Penn student, Kaynan Kaku. Both fighters are undefeated and this should be an entertaining matchup. Melendez (6-0) is best known for his wins over Stephen Palling and Olaf Alonso. None of his fights have ever gone to decision. He is also the current WEC World Champion and will be looking for another win in Hawaii. Kaku (5-0) has not fought the quality opponents Gilbert has, but he is undefeated and the only thing certain for this fight is that one of them will have the first blemish on their record at the end of the night. In the upcoming days we could be adding other fighters to what is already shaping up to be an incredible lineup.

Royler vs Baret?

Onzuka.com ExclusiveAs of now, the fight between Royler Gracie and
Hawaii's own Baret Yoshida is NOT confirmed. The promoters are still in negotiations. I know everyone wants to see this fight as well as BJ Penn vs. Rodrigo Gracie, but all names have to signed on the dotted line. There are numerous websites reporting that Baret/Royler is a done deal, but it's not. It may be sometime tomorrow, but as of last night, it wasn't a done deal. Don't believe everything you read.

TWO MORE MATCHES ADDED TO HIGH OCTANE FIGHTCARD
by: Turi Altavilla

Two more bouts have been added to PRIDE FIGHTING’s October 31st event, HIGH OCTANE. Already headlining the event is the highly anticipated title bout between middleweight world champion Wanderlei Silva and top contender Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Now added to the fightcard: “The Texas Crazy Horse” Heath Herring versus rising Japanese star Hirotaka Yokoi and New Zealand’s deadly striker Mark Hunt versus American Dan “The Bull” Bobish. All of these bouts are in addition to the colossal match-up of Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic versus Josh “The Babyface Assassin” Barnett and the pivotal middleweight bout of Dan “Hollywood” Henderson versus Kazuhiro Nakamura.

HIGH OCTANE will take place from the Saitama Super Arena in Japan and is scheduled to debut on North American pay per view via iNDEMAND, DIRECTV, DISH Network, and TVN on Sunday, October 31st, 2004 at 9:00pm EST, 6:00pm PST.

At 10-1, Hirotaka Yokoi is one of Japan’s most promising heavyweights; he is a veteran of the Rings organization and was victorious in his PRIDE FC debut, defeating Jerrel Venetiaan at PRIDE 23 CHAMPIONSHIP CHAOS 2. But it wasn’t until the opening round of the heavyweight Grand Prix tournament at TOTAL ELIMINATION 2004 that this fighter out of Osaka, Japan, made a name for himself. That evening he gave PRIDE FIGHTING interim heavyweight champion, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, everything he could handle. The champion was finally able to defeat his young opponent using a rarely seen choke-hold, but Yokoi’s fighting spirit won over the crowd. Yokoi’s opponent at HIGH OCTANE will be the 6’4, 240 pound Texan, Heath Herring. Representing team Golden Glory out of Holland, “The Texas Crazy Horse” had been riding a four fight-winning streak (which included wins over the 7’2 Giant Silva at SHOCKWAVE 2003 and Yoshiki Takahashi during the opening round of the heavyweight Grand Prix at TOTAL ELIMINATION 2004), that is until he reached the second round of the heavyweight tournament against Nogueira. Like Yokoi, Herring proved to be a difficult match for Nogueira … and like Yokoi, Nogueira used the exact same chokehold to defeat Herring! With both young fighters coming off of loses to Nogueira, which of the two will recover and take the next step forward in the heavyweight rankings?

The second bout added to the HIGH OCTANE fightcard features the classic match-up of striker versus grappler. At 5’10 and 250 pounds and representing Liverpool Kickboxing out of New Zealand, Mark Hunt is known as one of the most dangerous strikers in the world. After making the move from K-1 to MMA, Hunt made his PRIDE FIGHTING debut against Hidehiko Yoshida at CRITICAL COUNTDOWN 2004. Though he was not successful in that match, Hunt showed great promise and fans are eager to see what this kickboxing legend will do next. Hunt’s opponent at HIGH OCTANE will be MMA veteran and former “King of the Cage” heavyweight champion, Dan “The Bull” Bobish. This 6’1, 300 plus pound fighter combines a solid wrestling background with a brawling fight style and one thing is always certain---this bull charges forward! Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Bobish now lives and fights out of Cleveland, Ohio. In his career, Bobish has wins over “Dangerous” Dave Beneteau, “Big” Eric Pele and Mike Kyle. Will it be the night of the striker or will the grappler prove superior? Check out HIGH OCTANE to find out.

More matches to be announced soon!

Pe de Pano X Minotauro, just a chat...
by: Luca Atalla With R.N.

Two times Jiu-Jitsu absolute world champion, Marcio Cruz ‘Pe de Pano’ visited Pride’s phenomenon Rodrigo Nogueira ‘Minotauro’, in the mansion where the Brazilian Top Team athlete lives, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. ‘Minotauro is the great reference for me in Mixed Martial Arts’, said Pe de Pano, who had his MMA debut (against ‘The Beast’ Dan Severn, in IFC) canceled on the eve of the boat.

‘Pe de Pano can’t let himself down at this difficult moment, after that problem in IFC. He needs to stop thinking about the money damage that he had because of the combat cancellation, and just think about the next fight. If he likes to be in the ring and trains hard, the money will come as consequence’, advised Minotauro.

Pe de Pano heard carefully the words of his new colleague, and didn’t want to give any tip for Minotauro: ‘He is great, man. I can’t criticize or judge him. Minotauro is 100%. Always attacking just the way I like to play’, explained the Gracie Barra Combat Team athlete.

WHAT DOES THIS BUSHIDO MEAN TO MMA FANS?
by Ken Pishna

Pride finally announced the final card for their October 14th Bushido show. There were no big surprises as the card is pretty much as our sources had indicated a week or so ago.

The only somewhat surprising move was Pride making Takanori Gomi's main event fight against a mid-card fighter like Charles Bennett. No offense to Bennett, but he hasn't really beaten the kind of opposition that
usually lands you in a main event fight on a show the caliber of Bushido.

Without question, Gomi deserves his main event status, but it is a bit disappointing that they didn't find him a tougher opponent.

Hayato "Mach" Sakurai continues to attempt a revival of his career as he has been up and down over the past three years, but faces a tough youngster in Crosley Gracie who is somewhat untested.

In what could be the surprise fight of the night, Carlos Newton returns to Bushido to face Ryo Chonan. Though his record isspotty at 6-4, Chonan is a solid fighter that lost a decision to Ricardo Almeida in his last fight, but has recent wins of Daijiro Matsui and Sakurai.

The card also features Igor Vovchanchyn, Ikuhisa "The Punk" Minowa, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, and more. The pressure is really on for these lighter weight fighters to stand on their own.

At a press conference last week, DSE President Nobuyuki Sakakibara stated, "This time, we've decided to refrain from using big names like Silva and Mirko. I want to have a Light-Welterweight Grand Prix tournament next year, running from Spring to Autumn.

This fight will allow these fighters to gain the attention of fans of their weight class and to see if they can get the world's attention. I want them to have a clear understanding of how many fans are willing to come out and
see them."

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear as if the fans are responding. According to Zach Arnold of PuroresuPower.com, ticket sales have been
very, very slow for Bushido 5. In fact, Arnold said that it appears it will be a struggle for Bushido to sell the 8,000-10,000 tickets
necessary for the show to break-even.

THE FULL CARD:
Yasuhito Namekawa vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua
Sentoryu (Henry Miller) vs. Mal "Twin Tiger" Foki
Masakazu Imanari vs. Luis Buscape
Ikuhisa "The Punk" Minowa vs. Ryuuki Ueyama
Katsuhisa Fujii vs. Igor Vovchanchyn
Ryo Chonan vs. Carlos Newton
Hayato "Mach" Sakurai vs. Crosley Gracie
Takanori Gomi vs. Charles "Crazy Horse" Bennett

MARQUARDT LATEST FIGHTER TO TRAIN WITH TEAM QUEST
By Ken Pishna, MMAWeekly.com

Former King of Pancrase Nathan Marquardt spent a few days this past week out in Oregon. No, he wasn't out at Mt. Hood taking advantage of the year round skiing. He was actually at the Team Quest training center in Portland.

Marquardt is the latest fighter to take advantage of the growing reputation of Team Quest as THE place to train. According to Marquardt, he isn't leaving Colorado. "I just wanted to go train with some different guys. When you train with different guys, they always have different ways of doing things that maybe you haven't seen before. It helps keep me fresh," he said. "They have a good reputation and my manager [Will Hendricks] recommended that I go out there."

On November 7th, Marquardt (the only five time King of Pancrase) will attempt to become the only six time King of Pancrase as he will face Kazuo Misaki for the middleweight title. Misaki is currently ranked 3rd in the division by Pancrase, but Marquardt says, "He's the toughest opponent in the division. He's not going to be easy," which is part of the reason that Marquardt went to Portland.

"I went out there a little bit to train for this fight and to kind of test the waters," said Marquardt. "I really liked training with Matt [Lindland] and Chael [Sonnen]. It's good to see how different guys move and the different approaches that they have." Though he's not looking to leave his High Altitude Martial Arts school behind to become a Team Quest fighter, Marquardt said he is interested in possibly returning to train with Team Quest for future fights.

Shields Defends His Shooto Belt

It's official. Jake Shields will be making his first Shooto title defense when he faces Akira Kikuchi in Japan on December the 14th. Kikuchi (9-1) is one of Japan's top grapplers and the #1 contender for Jake's belt. He has recently voiced his disdain for Jake as the Shooto Champion and looks forward to having a rematch with the only fighter to have beaten him. Jake vows to defeat Kikuchi again, only this time by K.O. or submission.

As of now, the fight between Royler Gracie and Hawaii's own Baret Yoshida is NOT confirmed. The promoters are still in negotiations. Gracie ready to face BJ Penn at K-1

Not even the last amazing results of BJ Penn in MMA (three wins by submission over Takanori Gomi, Matt Hughes and Duane Ludwig) are enough to worry Rodrigo Gracie. With five victories and no losses in MMA, Rodrigo says he is ready for this major challenge.

- Every fight is a challenge, and every challenge can be overcome. I think that BJ Penn is a great fighter, very aggressive and has good standup and the ground, so he is dangerous both on the ground and standing up. I am training for that - guaranteed Gracie, who is aware of BJ BJJ titles. "As far as him winning the mundial, it just shows that he has good jiu-jitsu, but I have been training jiu-jitsu all my life so that does not put any additional pressure on me. I have been training for this fight, seriously as I have for all my fights and I will be ready when I step in the ring. As for what will happen in the fight, the only way to find out is to step into the ring," stated.

Euphoria Fighter Profile:
Interview with RICH CLEMENTI

On October 15th Euphoria MFC returns to Atlantic City for a card standing out as one of the sickest Lightweight tournaments in history. Although Alberto Crane is off the card due to injury his opponent Rich Clementi is still fighting, now scheduled to face Henry Matamoros. Clementi owns wins over tournament co-competitors Sergei Golyaev and Naoyuki Kotani as well as a loss to Yves Edwards. Actually this entire Lightweight tournament could be jokingly referred to as a ‘six degrees of Rich Clementi’ theme.

UFC may hold their next show the following weekend in the same city but their consistent move away from the Lightweights and their need for Heavyweights is making this seem not a two-part show at all but a two-part scene convergence with Euphoria MFC blowing away the UFC card at their weak points but UFC without question still having the best fighters in the US overall. This tournament is also showing fans still pay attention to the Lightweights because it has actually been getting as much attention from news sites than the next UFC show in the previous weeks.

Speaking of shows, in addition to his fight career Rich promotes Reality Combat whose last show was September 25th.

KM: How did the last Reality Combat show go? RC: The show was great. We had a great main event with Melvin Guillard vs. Laverne Clark that was fought to a draw, a lot of really exciting amateur and pro matches, and the production went pretty well as well. Six hours away from our normal operating home of business. We had quite a few knockouts. The main event was two guys who were pitted exactly the same as far as fighting style. Melvin challenged Laverne with his standup but a lot of people don’t know that Laverne’s wrestling is every bit as good as Matt Hughes’. He was able to utilize monstrous slams on Melvin. First fifteen seconds of the fight was change of position six or seven times from standing to knees to falling over…there is no way anybody who came to that show and watched that fight…they are a fan for life.

KM: This was in Mississippi in casino territory if I recall correctly. RC: Yes, right across the line from Memphis.

KM: Did it do so well you would return there or go back home? RC: It’s just a different location. We have a multi-fight deal which we are looking to finish in a few days with the same casino. We have some casinos in Lake Charles which is right outside Houston and some casinos right in our back yard.

KM: I was wondering if it would be webcast or taped. RC: Actually on our website realitycombat.tv we host free videos. We try to get all our fights up a week or so after our events. It’s a free signup. We are trying to do an informational website for the South, not just cover our stuff. A lot of people don’t realize what is going down in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama…that there is even a scene. I think the free videos and stuff is a nice way to attract that.

KM: With all of that recently how are you training for Euphoria MFC? RC: When I had my event up there I got up on Wednesday, trained over at Jeff Mullins’ school Thursday, practiced in the cage and grappled some on Friday…even with these shows nothing takes precedent over training. I was little tired today and had three people going round robin on me, a two-and-a-half hour practice this morning. I think fighting is a lot of mental preparation. I never stop training. Right now for three weeks I got this one fight card to work on, that is all I do. I have a school but it’s only guys that fight so I’m not worried about if I’m not paying attention or not doing privates. Theses next three weeks are allocated just for me. My partner sucks it up a little bit to help out.

KM: What do you think about the show itself? RC: It’s going to be in my hometown, there are no butterflies at all. I fought there before. I’m just looking at the one fight and whatever happens after that…I ain’t got nothing to lose. I’m rated a pretty high-caliber 155er. I’m not in the top 10 but like some people say a ‘gatekeeper’ type guy. The way I fight is not like ‘let’s roll around and go for a submission’, the way I like to fight is I like to scrap it up. I’ve been grappling with a lot of jiu-jitsu guys lately and my style, things have kind of changed a little lately.

KM: Can you explain? RC: I’ve never been submitted by a guy from the bottom. A lot of people think because Yves caught me with a rear naked choke that my jiu-jitsu may not be that good, Yves made Hermes Franca’s jiu-jitsu look not look good. That doesn’t mean shit. If my opponent ends up on bottom it’s going to be tough for him because when I’m on top I turn to my wrestling. I doubt I’ll ever get to fight in ZST again because they are like ‘you Vale Tudo fighter’. I’m more on position, ZST likes guys that roll around and go for a lot of submissions. I stay happening with what the trendy submissions are and stuff and I do that stuff myself. I may not do it in a fight but in practice I’m pretty tough to get like ‘I didn’t see that coming’. My grappling is geared to No Holds Barred. It’s not like the Yves fight where I felt I needed to be on the ground a little bit more. If he opens his guard we’re standing up every time.

KM: If you make it through this fight the rest of the tournament looks pretty tough. RC: I’ve beaten two of those guys already (Kotani and Golyaev). Both are quite capable of beating their opponents even though they are kind of both underdogs. Kotani is fearless and Marcus Aurelio (who besides Clementi is the only person to beat Kotani in two-and-a-half years) is one of the toughest 155 pounders and he was bringing it to Marcus. You can see the way Marcus caught me with a good punch and the tournament in general that Kotani may be a little bit reserved but he just came out and fought like he was nobody. He goes out there and fights and hits hard plus his leglocks are good. If anybody is going to submit Yves a leglock may be one of the things that he might get caught with. Hermes did once and almost had something.

KM: And Golyaev… RC: Very awkward, very tough. You’d have to take him down of course. He fights a lot like Yves; he’ll back peddle and counter punch. There is only one other guy who has ever dropped me like that, Pete Spratt. He definitely has power to KO anybody.

KM: What do you know about former Shooto champion Joakim Hansen? RC: Not much but from what people tell me we are a lot alike. Being as he’s ranked #2 or #3 depending on whose poll that is one person I’d love to fight. What do I have to lose? I think my standup is a little better, he’s a good wrestler but so am I, we’re probably equivalent ground-wise. Plus he’s the European power lifting champion or whatever. I think that would be a great next fight for me.

KM: Exactly! The tourists seem to only be looking for an Yves/Hermes rematch but several of us are like ‘no, Hansen/Clementi would be great!”. RC: I think that would be a really exciting match. Of course I’d say I wouldn’t mind fighting any of the guys I’ve lost to and they have lost to just for money purposes because I think I would beat Kotcani and Golyaev every time. I’d love to meat Yves in the finals because I’ve really become a fan of Yves just by watching him after our fight and I think I’ve seen some things he’s done that maybe I could capitalize on or do better.

KM: What do you think it’s going to take to beat Yves? You mentioned a possibility of a leg lock. What do you think you could do to beat Yves next time? RC: Josh Thompson hit it right on the nail; you need not chase him. He waits for you to tire down and tries to capitalize and then he goes in and fights the exact opposite of what he says. Just that is exactly what you have to do; you need to hold your ground a little, one or two counter punch, and disengage. To be honest Yves is a good puncher, good science as far as his striking, but he doesn’t really have that much power. After my fight I was like ‘he didn’t even hurt me’. I should have exchanged more. I think you need to hold your ground, not look to push the fight…it might not be an exciting fight but he waits to capitalize off of other people’s mistakes and he lets people try to use a lot of energy. He does a few simple things, smart defensively. In his last four fights that is what I got. I really take it one fight at a time as far as this tournament goes.

KM: Anything else to get across? RC: I’m happy to get a chance to be in the tournament. It’s in front of a lot of my fans and stuff like that. I’ve really improved a lot as a fighter since the last time most people got a chance to see me in UFC. Every time you see me I’ll never be the same guy. The main thing I’m doing for this show is cardio and strength. Another thing is I have my weight cutting down a little better than I have in the past.

KM: Sponsor to thank. RC: Sprawl.

KM: Have you tried those new loose-fitting shorts yet? RC: The ones with the new insert on the leg?

KM: About a week or two ago I heard something about looser fitting shorts. RC: I get all their products; our PR guy is one of Sprawl’s PR guys as well. It is a short that has almost a meshing in the crotch area, a stretching meshing. There is literally never a snag. It’s a pretty neat concept. I wouldn’t say it’s like a spandex in there but it is something quite similar to that.

KM: Are those better overall? RC: Yeah, I think for the grapplers. I’m using the spilt-side ones. I think it’s cool they spend time specifically engineering this specific type of sport.

KM: Anybody else? RC: I have them and Gameness and House Of Pain. It’s in negotiation but probably also Fairtex.

KM: And the next Rality Combat? RC: November 13th. The name of that one is “Total Trauma”.

ARNOLD'S NEXT MOVE?

HAVING AN MMA HEARING FOR RULES

MMA Writer Loretta Hunt called MMAWeekly Radio yesterday to talk about an upcoming MMA hearing. Hunt talked about how there is an open forum meeting tentatively scheduled for November 8th, where anyone can attend and discuss the rules and regulations that the California State Athletic Commission will be implementing.

Hunt said "As a mixed martial arts community, this will be your chance to address any issues or concerns, so please get the word out so those that should attend do attend."

The rules stated on the current California MMA list are basically the same rules the UFC currently uses. There are still some other hurdles that still need to be cleared before we see the first MMA event in the state of California.

The big sticking point now is not only forming an MMA Commission in California but paying the costs to have a commission set up.

MMAWeekly.com last week told you how the lawmakers from last years hearing, said it would cost any organization in the ball park of 300,000 to just set up a MMA Commission in the state of California. (With the people MMAWeekly talked with recently we've heard estimates, anywhere from 300,000 - 900,000 to have a commission set up. That number could still be on the high end.)

Which in all reality, would come out of the promoters pockets for the first MMA event in the state.....something that 95% of the organizations could not come up with for the initial "first MMA fight" in California.

Basically the first fight promotion or promotions that enters California have to make sure that there is an mma commission in place.

A boxing commission is of course already set in the state already, but that is separate from MMA and there will need to be an MMA commission set if there are any future fights in the state.

In the state of Nevada they do have many who do both boxing and MMA. The large sum of money has to cover many costs including doctors, security, judges, and referee costs; as well as, all of those positions need to be approved once a commission is set up.

RIGGS STATEMENT TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT?

Yesterday Joe Riggs had some strong words regarding a possible fight with David Terrell. Riggs talked with MMAWeekly's Mick Hammond about many things. If you missed his comments check out yesterday's news. Now 24 hours later, Riggs said his orginal statement was taken out of context, yet judging from his next statement.... that seems to be tongue and cheek.

"I was taken out of the context on the Cesar Gracie camp quote. In actuality, I am fond of their school. I have only met Cesar twice, but he was classy, accomodating and very knowledgeable. Tim McKenzie is a very good friend of both JM and I and one of our favorite people alive. Steve Heath is also a good guy, as is Nick Diaz. I don't know the rest of their school, so I am not downing any of them. "

"There is a lot of talk recently about me fighting David Terrell. That would be a great fight that I know I would win. But Terrell is not as great as people saw in that Matt Lindland fight. In fact, Lindland would beat him 9 out of 10 times. That left hand was uglier than his mother. If he threw that trash at me, I'd block it, and knock that hand and his dick in the dirt. My BJJ is far superior to his. I am a 4th degree black belt in Michelob Ultra in addition to having a submission wrestling repertiore that may not even be rivaled by Royler Gracie. "

"Having heard that he sent down his student who supposedly tapped me at will, while the only tapping was me tapping Terrell girl's ass like Fred Astaire. I have met him on several occasions and he was always rude to me, acting as if he was too good to talk to someone of my caliber. Meanwhile, he shoots .22's out of his fists while I drop bombs like Hiroshima. "

"If I lose to David Terrell, I am dropping to 145 and fighting Pequeno Nogueira. Terrell is actually a tough guy, a great ground game with solid wrestling and a good all-around game. I think Joe Doerksen is at least as good as Terrell. Everyone thought I would lose to Dirte', but I triumphed like the warrior I am and peacocked out of UFC 49. "

"The Doubters, I am a good guy to be around, just having some fun on the forum. Hang out with me and my crew and you will too be a Diesel-holic. Please don't verbally bash me as I will be up all night stewing over it, taking it out on my precious Chinese Pugs. "

I'm Joe Riggs, BITCH!

ERICKSON RETURNS TO MMA

It's been a while since we have seen Tom Erikson in MMA. You have to go back to 2002 when Erikson took out Tim Catalfo by a rear naked choke at Pride 19. He did return to fighting recently against boxer Shannon Briggs, but that was a quick loss in the first round in K-1.

Now he returns to MMA, this time for the upcoming Jungle Fight card. Wallid Ismael, the promoter for Jungle Fight has scheduled the show for October 23rd at the Tropical Eco Resort in Manaus, Brazil

October 23rd : MMA matchups:

Jefferson 'Tank' Silva vs. Tom Erikson

Carlos Barreto vs. Travis Wiuff

Assuerio Silva vs. Bobby Hoffman

Ronaldo 'Jacare' vs. Boris Jonstomp

MMAWeekly Radio host Frank Trigg said recently that there is a good possibility that teammate Vladimir Matyushenko will be a part of this card as well.

K-1 Returns To Pay Per View December 4th

World Grand Prix Finals tournament draw highlighted by Bonjasky-Hoost matchup

K-1 will make an explosive return to United States Pay-Per-View television during a live broadcast of its annual “World Grand Prix Finals” single, elimination tournament championship beginning at 12 AM Eastern Standard Time (9 PM Pacific Standard Time) on Saturday, December 4th. 2003 tournament champion, Remy Bonjasky, will set out to defend his crown and be faced by an opening round challenge of gargantuan proportions in countryman and four-time World Grand Prix Finals victor, “Mr. Perfect” Ernesto Hoost.

The meeting of the two Dutch competitors comes as one of the most highly-anticipated in K-1’s 12-year history. While Hoost has long represented the sport as its dominant figure and has defeated every top rival contender throughout his extensive stay in the K-1 tournament circuit, Bonjasky, at 28 years of age, is widely regarded as the heir to the Hoost throne. The pair were originally scheduled to do battle for the first time in their careers earlier this year during a single-bout contest . An injury sustained by Hoost during training camp led to a cancellation of the fight.

In the same tournament bracket, another explosive matchup will likely ensue when three-time World Grand Prix Finals champion, Peter Aerts, faces former International Boxing Federation (IBF) World Heavyweight Champion, Francois “The White Buffalo” Botha. Since being burdened with a number of injuries during the last three years, the 34-year-old Aerts, nicknamed “The Dutch Lumberjack,” has been victorious in six of his last seven K-1 starts. The 6 foot 4 inch, 240-pounder, who was ousted from last year’s World Grand Prix Finals loop at the hands of Japan’s Musashi via judges’ decision in the semifinal round of competition, gained entry into this year’s draw by earning a judges’ decision over Canadian Michael McDonald on September 25th. On the same card, Botha secured his place in the eight-fighter playoff when he took on two-time World Grand Prix Finals runner-up, Jerome LeBanner. After three rounds of gutsy action, the bout was declared a draw and an overtime, “sudden death” round was ordered to determine a winner. LeBanner, however, indicated that he would not be able to answer the opening bell for the additional round as his left arm had been badly battered during the fight. The technical knockout victory awarded to Botha represented the South African’s first win in five K-1 appearances he has made to date.

Two of the sport’s newest faces in American “Mighty Mo” Siligia and Thailand’s Kaoklai Kaennorsing will face off in the tournament’s other bracket. Also a former professional boxer, the 33-year-old Siligia made his K-1 debut earlier this year and has since used his extraordinary power to soar through the sport’s rankings. On August 7th, he captured his first K-1 tournament crown by defeating three straight opponents during “Battle at Bellagio III” at Las Vegas, Nevada’s Bellagio Hotel and Casino. The September 25th card in Tokyo saw Siligia serve up a thunderous first round knockout of fellow brawler “Big Daddy” Gary Goodridge. At a mere 172 pounds, Kaennorsing represents the smallest fighter in K-1 history to win a Grand Prix tournament championship (K-1 World Grand Prix 2004 in Seoul, Korea, July 17th) and will give up more than 100 pounds to his December 4th opponent. The 21-year-old Thai boxer, who is a veteran of 71 professional Muay Thai bouts, shocked the world on September 25th by outboxing K-1 superstar Alexey Ignashov. After three rounds of battle that the judges scored a draw, an overtime round saw Kaennorsing frustrate Ignashov with continuous movement and a steady dose of kicks until the Thai native captured a majority judges’ decision. The spectacular win over Ignashov extended Kaennorsing’s perfect record in K-1 competition to 4-0.

A rematch between Musashi and 2000 World Grand Prix Finals runner-up, Ray Sefo, represents the fourth opening tournament round bout. During last December’s Tokyo Dome extravaganza, Musashi reached the first World Grand Prix Finals championship round of his career by earning judges’ decisions over Sefo and Aerts, respectively. The 32-year-old has been successful in all four of his appearances this year, including a June 6th showdown with former world boxing champion, “Merciless” Ray Mercer. At 33 years of age, Sefo is an established fan favorite in the sport of K-1 and has shown a renewed commitment this year to securing his first World Grand Prix crown by losing approximately 35 pounds and returning to top physical form. After producing a second round knockout of 6 foot 3 inch, 360-pound Bob “The Beast” Sapp in June, Sefo made a successful United States K-1 debut on August 7th by stopping American Marvin “The Beastman” Eastman in a Superfight contest.

The winner of the matchup between Bonjasky and Hoost will face the winner of the bout between Aerts and Botha while the victor of the fight between Siligia and Kaennorsing will square off with the victor of the matchup between Musashi and Sefo. The winners of each semifinal round bout will meet in the tournament’s championship round.

K-1 is a martial arts fighting sport that derives its name from its inclusion of a wide array of combat disciplines, including Karate, Kung-Fu, and Kickboxing (“K”), and its intent to determine one champion in one ring (“1”). After being staged for the first time in Japan in 1993 under the direction of founder Master Kazuyoshi Ishii, it later evolved into the country’s most popular sport and achieved popular culture status there as its athletes turned into larger-than-life celebrities.

Quote of the Day

The most essential factor is persistence, - the determination never to allow your energy or enthusiasm to be dampened by the discouragement that must inevitably come.

WHITE RESPONDS TO LATEST COMMENTS ON MMAWEEKLY RADIO

UFC President Dana White talked with MMAWeekly's Ryan Bennett this past weekend about what he thought of BJ Penn's lawyers comments on MMAWeekly Radio.

If you missed what BJ's lawyer, Steven Straus said, Jeff Cain provided the recap below this story.

Zuffa's headman said that the only reason he was at the hearing was the fact that Penn's lawyers filed the injuction as Dana said, "this was never a full blown court case, not one of us got on the stand." White said the only reason why anyone from the UFC was there was the fact that Penn's team filed the injuction.

White told MMAWeekly that people have to understand there is no sanctioning body like there is in boxing. Therefore fighters don't have to pay any sanctioning fees like boxers do and unfortunately the MMA fighters aren't making the kind of pay checks that the top boxers make either.

"Oscar De La Hoya has to pay what....$250,000 of his last purse to the WBC for sanctioning fees? I wish our sport was in that position that everybody made a ton of money, but the sport is not and it won't be for quite some time. We are working hard to change it."

As far as the belt descripancy goes with what Straus said on the radio show, White said that the UFC gives their best fighter at 170 a belt which is basically "a trophy" and that the UFC would never take away the actual "win" from BJ Penn against Matt Hughes.

White said that his immediate thoughts now is on the future of the UFC. "I'm done talking about it (the court case)."

For now Dana will focus on the new reality television show that will air on Spike TV in January. Dana is the show's executive producer.

White is as busy as he has ever been. Dana is always working on getting the other separate TV deal, which he talked about at the UFC 49 press conference a few months back, not to mention on top of it all, did we mention that he has UFC 50 coming up in a three weeks? It's indeed a busy time for the President of the UFC.

RIGGS HIT LIST INCLUDES TERRELL

Last week MMA Weekly broke the news that Kengo Ura of the R-1 team had sustained an injury forcing him out of his fight with Joe “Diesel” Riggs at the upcoming WEC 12 on October 21st in Lemoore, California. MMA Weekly’s Mick Hammond was able to speak to Riggs this weekend about the fight and what he has upcoming.

When asked whether or not he would be fighting at WEC 12 Riggs commented, “I have no idea. I just heard two days ago that he’s hurt. I don’t think I’ll be on the card, because they haven’t said anything to me. The chances of me fighting right now are 50/50 if they find me an opponent to fight.”

Riggs discussed exactly what his contractual obligation to the WEC was when he said, “I signed to fight 4-5 months ago in May but the fight never happened. They basically paid for me to go down there and when the fight didn’t happen they called the money they gave me a ‘signing bonus,’ so basically I’m still under contract with them until I fight for them.”

If the fight does not take place for the WEC, Riggs may be fighting elsewhere as he mentioned, “I’ve been in talks with Rumble on the Rock to go over to Hawaii to fight Niko Vitale in November. Other than that I don’t have anything else in the works because that WEC thing came back and bit me in the ass.”

Whichever fight Riggs takes next it will be his first fight since defeating Joe Doerkenson at UFC 49 this past August. Rumor had circulated that Riggs had sustained a hand injury when he did not appear at the post-fight press conference. To this Riggs refutes, “No I didn’t break anything. I wasn’t at the press conference because I went to celebrate my victory with everyone and forgot about it. Yeah my hand did hurt a little but that’s just like any other fight. I had to show the NSAC x-rays to prove my hand isn’t broken and I’ve done that so that’s not an issue.”

Riggs ended the conversation by stating his opinion on David Terrell, the other middleweight fighter who was victorious at UFC 49, “I don’t like him at all. Actually I don’t like any of those Cesar Gracie guys except for Tim McKenzie. Terrell has a big fucking mouth and I’d love to beat his ass sometime and you can print that.”

Radio Recap by Jeff Cain

MMAWeekly Radio talked with Steven Straus, BJ Penn's lawyer, on the radio show Friday. Straus spoke freely about losing the injunction hearing to get the UFC 50 bout between Matt Hughes and Georges St.Pierre to not be for the title. He went in depth about the UFC's arguments in court, the lawsuit in general that Penn has filed against the UFC and where the proceedings will go from here.

Straus started by saying, "Let me begin with the complaint that was filed. There were a number of allegations that were made within the complaint, including that Zuffa has really tried to monopolize the MMA sport. It has also potentially used deceptive practices in connection with it's business and, among the complaints was one for injunctive relief to ask the court to prevent the fight, October 22nd, between Matt Hughes and St. Pierre, from being touted as a title fight.

About the injunction, Straus said, "Whenever you ask a court for an injunction, it's an extraordinary relief and it requires the court to balance the interest of the parties and then make a determination." He continued, "It was clear from the hearing that the court had some difficulty based on the arguments that were made by Zuffa."

According to Mr. Straus, Zuffa's original argument was, "The reason that they stripped BJ Penn of his title, his World Welterweight Title, was because he walked away from a deal that they had in place and violated his contract. When they come into court, they've got a new set of lawyers and that's not what they argue."

"What they argue, to our surprise and really to the disappointment and sadness of not just BJ Penn but I think of all MMA fans, they argue that this is really a make believe belt. They argue, for the first time, that their title is only available to fighters that are under contract with Zuffa. That was never disclosed to BJ Penn in his negotiations for the contract in the first place, and to my knowledge, that's never been disclosed to any MMA fan; people that buy the videos, people that attend the UFC events", said Steven.

Straus went on to say, "So essentially, they've trashed their own belt and the court didn't feel it could stop them from doing it on the record that it had. The court however did make some comments that I think are very instructive. One of which is that it believed that Mr. Penn may be able to show that they wrongfully stripped him of his title and it admonished the other side that they better try to resolve this or they could end up with potentially two titles. They could end up with other relief against them."

What is the next coarse of action for the Penn legal team? Straus said, "Our next step is to pursue a fraud action in this case that arose based on the arguments they presented. They told BJ Penn, a world champion in Brazilian JJ, that if you fight for us, you could get a world type of belt. They told the fans the same thing on the advertising for the bout, in the advertising for the videos. They use the slogan, 'As Real As It Gets.' They come into court and say, this isn't real at all judge. This is only for us. This isn't about the world. This is about our contract with our fighters and that was a total surprise to us. Again, we can't stop them from committing business suicide, but we'll hope they reconsider and try and treat BJ Penn and the rest of their fighters fairly."

Mr. Straus elaborated on the position of Zuffa. He commented, "The basis of their claim for stripping him of the title in affidavits that were filed by Dana White, is that BJ Penn walked away from a deal that they had set up with Pride. BJ Penn and his manager, JD Penn, will tell you and they told the court, we never heard about any Pride deal. They never brought us a Pride deal. As their attorney at the time, I never saw a Pride deal and they consider that an out and out lie."

Steven continued, "What they're basically doing is first coming up with an excuse for stripping him of his title and then when they come into court, they say no, the real reason we stripped him of his title is because titles are only available for fighters that we have under contract. They never told BJ that."

Steven Straus was asked about the rumor that when a UFC fighter wins a title, his contract is automatically extended. Steven said that BJ was not under contract with the UFC. He stated, "They never offered another contract. His contract had expired and before they had argued that the contract had not expired but that he breached it and that's why they stripped him of his title."

"They come into court and say no, no, the contract had expired. We agree the contract expired. We don't have to offer him another title. So, under their system, once you have a title holder, there's no duty, they don't have a duty to allow their title owner to defend that title," said Strauss.

Steven was further questioned about UFC fighters who win titles contracts being extended for three more fights. He said this is true but, "There was also a provision and this was discussed in court so I don't believe we're violating any exclusivity here. They claim that this is a confidential agreement. We would like them to put it out there for the fans to look at it themselves but we still respect their confidentiality until the court rules otherwise, but his is something they did argue in court."

So, was BJ Penn under contract or not? Straus said the term of the contract provided for, if a fighter becomes champion within a year of his first fight on the contract, then the contract automatically rolls over for another year. This isn't the case with BJ. BJ fought Matt Serra in his first fight of his three fight deal with the UFC back in September of 2002. He won his title in January of 2004.

The question was then posed, can a fighter who isn't in the UFC hold a UFC title. Straus' opinion was, "If the courts hold them to the advertisements that they made to the fans and to BJ Penn, if the court treats this belt as something that's real, then sure he can hold that title belt and that would continue until it's either retired or it was taken away from him by a competitor in a lawful sanctioned match."

Straus went on to say, "That's not what happened. They basically said, hey we have a secret intent to only control our belt under contract with UFC fighters. They didn't offer BJ another contract. He never walked away from anything. They lied to him through fraud and that's our next step."

Does losing the injunction hearing mean anything in the overall case? Here's what Strauss had to say about it. "The preliminary injunction is just a single step, and I want to make sure you understand that, it's like round one of a multi-round bout. The court specifically ruled that it's decision was without precedent. That means we can come back. We can come back before October 22nd and ask that that not be a title fight. We have to go forward on the basis that Zuffa argued."

Straus added, "Zuffa put themselves in a box saying they've got a make believe title now. That it's not a world champion title. It's not a world title at all. They committed fraud. They told the fans, they told BJ, you're fighting for a title. He's a world champion. He owns the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu world champion title. That can't be taken away from him. If you are an Olympic Gold Medal winner, unless you do something wrong, that can't be taken away from you. But Zuffa says we can take it away from you because we didn't offer you a contract to continue fighting for us. That's wrong and the courts should rule that it's wrong and the fans should stand up and say "hey this is wrong.""

Continuing to hammer home his point, Straus stated, "Your title has to mean something. If you're going to say that it's a world title, it's got to be a world title. It's not just for show. This isn't just professional wrestling. This is an athletic event. It's based on performance."

What is BJ Penn trying to accomplish out of this situation? Straus said, "What we're going to try to do is two things: 1. For negotiations with Zuffa to realize that they're committing business suicide by trashing their own title. 2. Go forward with the complaint on the counts that are included, amended to include a fraud count on BJ's behalf and on behalf of all the fans that are being cheated."

BJ Penn can fight whenever and wherever he wants to at this point. He is not under contract with the UFC. By all accounts, he plans to fight inside or outside of the UFC.

When asked about the time frame for when this whole law suit will be over, Straus said it could be awhile. Fortunately, he thinks that a jury trial should be able to begin within a year to fourteen months of the lawsuit's filing. Straus stated, "We can't force them to do the right thing. We can just make them pay huge damages for not doing it." It looks as if this lawsuit is nowhere near being over.

St. Pierre’s Manager
Comments on Penn and TKO future

In an exclusive, MMA Weekly’s Mick Hammond spoke with Georges St. Pierre’s manager Stephane Patry this weekend and got his comments regarding BJ Penn and his lawyer Steven Straus’ appearances on MMA Weekly Radio this past Friday as well as the future endeavors of Patry’s TKO organization.

When asked to respond to Straus’ comments that “UFC's argument in court was that BJ can't stop this fight because this welterweight title fight isn't an actual championship belt...it's just an interim ‘made up’ belt,” Patry replied, “The October 22nd fight against Matt Hughes is for the UFC World Welterweight Championship. There has been no mention that it is not for anything less than the full UFC title. The bottom line is that Georges is fighting Matt and that the title is on the line.”

Patry continued his thoughts by stating, “Matt Hughes is the main priority for Georges right now, not BJ Penn, but if BJ wants to fight Georges after he defeats Matt then Georges will be in the octagon waiting for him. I know that BJ beat Matt but 9 times out of 10 that’s not what would have happened. When Georges beats Matt then he’ll be the best welterweight in the world. I feel that Georges then will be a great asset to the UFC for many years to come. The thing is with BJ is that nobody wanted him before he became UFC champion because he was too small. He wasn’t getting any other calls but he fought in the UFC to get exposure then won the title then used it to sell himself, if BJ was a true champion then he should respect it. When Georges wins the title we will honor the fact that he is their champion and will stay loyal to the UFC and defend the title and not fight anywhere else.”

The focus of the conversation then shifted towards Patry’s TKO organization which has been producing MMA shows in Canada since 2000, “It’s been four years since I started UCC/TKO and we’ve been looking for perfect chemistry to take it to the next level. I’m proud of the team we have now and TKO 17 last month was the best show we’ve had so far,” said Patry. Stephane continued his thoughts by saying, “It was exactly what I was dreaming of in 2000. I feel we will be ready to take on the international market soon. I don’t know if we will take an event to the States, because that’s the UFC’s territory and I do not want to compete with them. I’m working with the UFC, sending fighters to them and working with them to get the best exposure for everyone possible.”

Patry then discussed TKO’s prospects for furthering their exposure when he said; “We will put our shows on TV in the States because we’ve just signed two TV deals for the States. I cannot say much about them at this time as both networks want to give full information in their own press releases but you can expect those announcements later this month.” Patry then continued, “In our next big event we are going to do a live high-quality broadcast on the net on our website. I’m not sure if we are going to charge people to watch it in the future, but right now the idea is to offer the first one for free so that people can see what our show is about. It will give them a chance to see the kind of fighters we have and our production quality, which I feel we are at the same level of the UFC and Pride production-wise.”

Patry then talked about another avenue of exposure by saying, “We will be releasing a ‘best of’ DVD on November 13th which will be available everywhere. It will include the Jens Pulver VS Bang Ludwig fight that everyone has been wanting to watch in high quality as well feature fighters like Georges, Pete Spratt, David Loiseau, Jeremy Horn, Sean Sherk, Tony Frykland, and Patrick Cote. It will be the best MMA DVD out there by far.”

The conversation closed out with Patry saying, “Basically we are ready to continue from where we were before UCC 12 where we had a lot of problems. We’ve restructured things and after the show we just had I’m confident we are ready to take this company to the next level. We’ve got a lot of great fighters that people in the States may not be familiar with but I’m confident in them to be some of the best fighters anywhere. We’ve got two shows coming up in November, one on the 6th in Sherbrook which will feature more of the local talent then a really big show on November 26th in Montreal. I can’t say much about the show in Montreal but what I can say is it’s going to have a lot of big name talent. And because of the current NHL strike we are in talks with the Molsen Center where the Canadians play, if the venue is available on that date then that’s where we are going to hold the show, in major arena.”

K-1 World GP 2004 Final Matchups

TOKYO, September 26, 2004 -- With the eight participating fighters decided at the September 25 K-1 World Grand Prix Final Elimination, a draw was held today to determine the first-tier matchups for the December 4 Tokyo Dome Final.

The pairings were determined under a special selection system which combines elements of choice with a bit of good old fashioned luck. With media and fans watching, all eight fighters first reached in turn into a box to blindly choose from balls on which were printed the numbers one through eight. Next, fighters proceed, one at a time and in the order determined by their number, to a giant matchup tree set up at the front of the room. There they are free to install themselves in any or eight available positions, indicated as A through H. This then becomes the tournament tree -- A vs B and C vs D being the first bracket; E vs F and G vs H being the second bracket of the first tier matchups.

Generally, fighters opt where possible to position themselves in early bouts (positions A and B being the first fight), as these will afford longer rests for those who advance. But after the first selection has been made, strategy also enters into the process. If, for example, the choosing fighter likes his chances against an already committed fighter, he can install himself beside that fighter if the position is vacant. Or, if the choosing fighter does not want to face an already committed fighter, he can install himself elsewhere, either beside another fighter or beside an empty position.

This year, the selection went as follows:

Having drawn the number one ball, Thai wunderkind Kaoklai Kaennorsing selected first, and put himself in the A position, the red corner in the first fight. Next, Mighty Mo of the United states, who had the number two ball, went forward and, after only a brief hesitation, chose the B position, meaning he will face Kaoklai in the first matchup.

The number three ball was Ray Sefo's and the Kiwi went to the C position, red corner in the second bout. Japanese fighter Musashi had the number four ball and spent a long time looking at fighters and thinking before electing to step into the D position and a matchup with Sefo.

Peter Aerts of the Netherlands was next and stepped into the E position, red corner in the third bout. South African Francois Botha chose next, and went without hesitation to the F spot and a date with Aerts. Next it was Dutchman Remy Bonjasky to the G position, red corner in the final first-tier fight, after which compatriot Ernesto Hoost was left with the blue corner in the same bout.

Said Kaoklai: "I have the impression that Mighty Mo, like all my opponents, is big, and as always I'll do my best."

Remarked Mo: "I chose the B spot because I wanted to be one of the first fighters up so that I can rest my body after the fight. I don't take anybody for granted, I know Kaoklai is small but tough, and I will try to drop 20 pounds so I can keep up with his speed!"

Sefo has this to say about the second fight: "I am glad Musashi and I will meet because we have some unfinished business -- I won our first fight and he won the second. He is a great fighter, it will be a really good match. Like Peter said, I want to wish 'almost' everybody good luck on December 4th!"

Replied Musashi: "I chose this spot because I heard someone in the audience shout 'D,' it was like God's voice! Ray and I do have unfinished business. He is a fighter I respect very much, he has not only punches but also good kicks. He is an entertaining fighter as well, he has his antics in the ring, but this is a tournament and I want to move on to the next bout, so I will do my best"

Said Aerts about his opponent: "Francois is one of the best boxers in the world, so I will keep try to keep my hands up!"

Replied Botha: "I chose Peter because he is very pretty! Seriously, he is one of the best kickboxers in the world, so I will watch out for my legs."

Said Bonjasky on drawing Hoost: "It's a good matchup because this year Ernesto and I were going to fight in April, but we couldn't because of an injury, so now we will have the chance. He is a four-time Champion of course, but it's time for new blood, and the new blood is here!"

Replied Hoost: "I will be 110% for this fight. It will be interesting, the old Champion against the new Champion -- and when I beat the new Champion he becomes the old Champion and I become the new Champion again, that will be very nice!"

It was announced at the draw that the Final's reserve fight will be between Cyril Abidi and Jerome LeBanner.

The K-1 World Grand Prix 2004 Final is set for Tokyo Dome on Sunday December 4. It will be same-day broadcast across Japan by the Fuji TV Network. The official matchups and complete fighter profiles can be found on the K-1 Official Website (www.k-1.co.jp)

Rodrigo Gracie v BJ Penn

There's been a lot of rumors about a possible blockbuster match up between Rodrigo Gracie and BJ Penn. A fight like this one would generate a lot of interest, as both fighters have aggressive styles and both are ground specialists.

Because of the magnitude of the fight and the attention it has generated, I got a hold of Rodrigo to verify the info and to find out the inside scoop.

KP: Rodrigo there is a rumor that you maybe fighting BJ Penn; any truth to that?

RG: I was offered to fight BJ Penn. I took the fight, however my manager has some details to work out with the promoter, so until that is done its not sure, but its very possible.

KP: If the fight happens, when do you think it will take place?

RG: Well, like it said, the details have not been finalized yet, but it may be as early as November 20th or as late as December 31st.

KP: Have you started your training yet, just in case the fight is a go?

RG: I have been staying in fighting shape, I haven't changed my training routine at all. I have been training the same way I prepare for all my fights. Now I have adjusted the training specifically for BJ, so yes I am training as if the fight is a go.

KP: What is your strategy for the fight?

RG: That you will have to find out the day of the fight. It’s a closely guarded secret. (lol)

KP: BJ Penn is the only American to win the Worlds as a Black belt, does that pose any concerns to you?

RG: BJ Penn is a great fighter, a very tough opponent, I like that. His Jiu-Jitsu is great, his standup is good; he is going to be a tough test. But I have been doing jiu-jitsu all my life, so I take it in consideration that he won the Worlds, but does not put any more pressure on me.

KP: Who are you training with for the fight?

RG:I have a good team of trainers for the weights and cardio and jiu-jitsu, as well as some standup.

KP: There is also a rumor that Royler may be fighting on the same card, any truth to that.

RG: I think so. I heard he is fighting on that card, but I am not sure, you have to ask Royler about that.

KP: If the fight does take place who is going with you?

RG: Renzo & Royce will be there, my conditioning coach Martin Rooney and my training partners will be there. Do you want to come Kid? Talk to my manager he will hook it up for you.

KP: Anything you want to add?

RG: I just want to thank all my fans, my students, my family and those who have supported me in my career. Their support and energy mean a lot to me. I am training very hard for this fight and I will be ready for anything and everything. I give BJ all the credit in the world, but I will be ready to fight, and ready to win.

KP: Thank you Rodrigo

RG: Thank you very much Kid.

Euphoria MFC Fighter: Interview with RYAN SCHULTZ

On October 15th Euphoria MFC put on their second show in Atlantic City, this time at the Tropicana. The Lightweight tournament is getting the most attention so far with multiple UFC vets plus several fighters that have stood out in other shows like King Of The Cage, Shooto, and ZST. In the alternate fight of that tournament Team Quest’s Ryan Schultz takes on S.H.O.O.T. Spain’s David Gaona.

KM: What do you think of your next opponent, David Gaona? RS: You know, I don’t know anything about him to tell you the truth.

KM: Spanish fighter, shootfighter and Wuropean Pancration champion, not much listed on the web…does any of that mean anything to you? RS: No, I’m just going to show up and fight like I always do. I’m sure he’s going to do his thing so I expect it to be what it is.

KM: Can you please describe your last fight, the one in APEX? RS: It went well for me; I was able to do what I wanted, I didn’t take too much damage or anything. Good fight for me.

KM: Your opponent Dent was saying he didn’t take much damage and was objecting to the ref stopping it. It looked to me like he was covering up and not really defending himself. What do you think of his take on that ending? RS: If that is what he says about it, that is fine. As far as I’m concerned he wasn’t really doing nothing, didn’t even hit me once. What do want from that? Basically slow starter, well allright.

KM: In that fight you showed more ground skills and takedown skills while in the Castillo fight in WEC you showed your standup and striking. Looking at both you do a great job of controlling the fight, instilling your will. RS: My wrestling is always going to be there and if I want to go to it I can always go to it. It’s always been my base. You saw that fight out there and this guy just covered up, put his elbows up…well I’m going to take you down. I’m not going to punch your elbows and hurt my hands. I decided to take him down, slam him, and just get on top of him.

KM: I haven’t seen you work from your back before. RS: My main objective is to get the heck up, get off my back. I’ve only been there maybe one time or twice against Jhun and I didn’t get away that time. No, I don’t like to get taken down.

KM: As far as fans thinking that may be your weakness what would you have to say? RS: RS: I’d have to say you can try it. You got to get me down and try to hold me there.

KM: Your teammate Chael Sonnen said he hasn’t shown much work from his back but you guys train with jiu-jitsu a lot. RS: Yeah, I work off my back in practice all the time. It’s not like I’ve never been there.

KM: You are getting to be an international name, on the international stage. You fought in Montreal (APEX), you are fighting a guy from Spain, you fought Jhun in Hawaii… RS: I’m just taking one fight at a time and I want to fight the best in the world. That is what I’ll keep doing and just go after it. What happens happens.

KM: This is going to be at 155? RS: Yes, 155.

KM: Isn’t this the alternate bracket of the 155 tounament? RS: That is what I found out later, yeah. Whatever, it’s a fight and that is the way it goes.

KM: Sponsors to thank? RS: Adrenaline fight gear. They stick behind me.

XFO gives sellout crowd long night of MMA

LAKEMOOR, Ill. -- It started 20 minutes late, but nobody in the sellout crowd was complaining when the Xtreme Fighting Organization finished its third show more than four hours later.

The event featured 16 bouts -- eight of them going more than one round, and five of them going into the third round.

'This was one of those shows where everything came together... the fights we thought were going to be good were great, and the ones we thought were going to be OK were also great,' said Monte Cox, one of the event's promoters.

Jeff Curran and Jason Dent put on a 15-minute war that left both fighters bloody and with broken noses. Curran showed solid standup and good ground skills en route to a unanimous decision victory. Dent, making his first fight at 145 (he normally fights at 155), showed he can be a top competitor at the lower division.

'Promoters always hope that the main event lives up to its hype and we certainly got that out of Curran and Dent,' Cox said. 'It was a perfect way to finish a great show.'

Cox added that the event was a complete sellout.

The next XFO event is expected to be in early December.

Curran wins in XFO, eyes bigger opportunity

LAKEMOOR, Ill. -- Jeff Curran's career as a professional MMA fighter has included a lot of frustration.

Despite a great run of impressive performances, he has apparently failed to gain

the acceptance of some top organizations, including Shooto, as one of the world's best 145-pounders.

On Saturday at the Xtreme Fighting Organization's event, Curran won his fourth straight fight, beating a tough Jason Dent by unanimous decision in a 15-minute war that left both fighters bloody and nursing broken noses.

'Curran is such a fun guy to watch fight... he throws hard on his feet, and his jiu-jitsu is slick on the ground,' said manager Monte Cox. 'In the last two years, he is 8-2 with the only losses coming by decision to Norifumi 'Kid' Yamamoto and Matt Serra in a 155-pound fight in the UFC. But I can't get Shooto interested for some reason.'

In his last 10 fights, Curran has defeated five fighters who compete regularly in Shooto...

'We've talked with Shooto a lot about Curran, but it doesn't seem to be getting us anywhere,' Cox added. 'I guess he'll just have to keep beating the best guys we can find until somebody pays attention.'

In the last two years, Curran has been victorious against some top competitors, including Todd Lally, Ryan Akerman, Baret Yoshida and Bao Quach.

Curran will be fighting in the upcoming Ironheart Crown and probably in an 8-man tournament for ZST in Japan later this year.

REAL PRO WRESTLING TV: THE NEXT STAGE IN WRESTLING'S GREAT EXPERIMENT (Part Three)

We are now just days away from the television taping of the first season of shows for Real Pro Wrestling. If everything goes as planned and hoped, the sport of wrestling could see the emergence of a new style which is basically an amalgam of several existing styles of wrestling.

Toby Willis, the CEO and co-founder of Real Pro Wrestling, described the basic style as being a 'hybrid,' especially of the current international styles of freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.

Under Real Pro Wrestling's rules, there will be seven weight classes, the same as now in international men's wrestling. There will be two periods of three minutes each, the format now being scrapped by FILA, the hapless international wrestling federation. FILA will use three, two-minute periods, with the winner of the match being determined by which wrestler wins two periods, even if the wrestler who won one period had more total points than his opponent. Such a concoction and mechanical copying of sports like tennis will not be used by Real Pro Wrestling.

A takedown is worth two points, with more if there is back exposure. Leg attacks are permitted as in freestyle, so it will be instructive to see how Real Pro Wrestling's many Greco wrestlers, in whose style leg attacks are prohibited, will do under these rules.

Real Pro Wrestling's most innovative rule, the push-out rule, is also being retained. This rule was borrowed and adapted from sumo wrestling.

A wrestler gets one point for pushing his opponent out-of-bounds. At Real Pro Wrestling's 2002 pilot, this rule led to increased and almost nonstop action and had the wrestlers attempting to stay in the center of the mat. This was the most successful and popular rule innovation then, and no doubt will be critical in helping Real Pro Wrestling maintain a popular, easy-to-understand, and exciting enough style to become viable as a professional sport.

There will be no three-point minimum required to win a match. The team scoring concept has also been retained, which awards each team the differential in points scored in individual matches, instead of a fixed number for decisions, tech falls, etc. That discourages stalling and encourages wrestlers to keep attempting to score points, even after getting a seemingly safe lead.

Once again there will be video review where necessary. Unlike FILA, which just used one stationary camera at the officials' table in the 2004 Olympics, there will be upwards of three angles examined, more like the NFL does in its instant replays. Plus, the replays will be displayed on a large screen in the arena for the fans and everyone else to observe.

We all know that passivity will remain a problem even with these rules, so Real Pro Wrestling will have a passivity clock on the scoreboard measuring when a wrestler is not active in the center of the mat. Here is where the rules combine freestyle and Greco.

A passivity call will result in the wrestlers being put into a clinch position, but not under the rules developed by FILA. Only the offensive wrestler, whose opponent was called for passivity, will lock up in a clinch. The offensive wrestler has the choice of locking up in the standing position, or on the mat from the par terre position with his opponent placed down.

He then has 20 seconds to score. The defensive wrestler cannot score. In addition, the offensive wrestler cannot attack the legs or use his legs in an attack. The defensive wrestler also cannot use his legs to defend.

The idea, Willis said, was to 'remove as much subjectivity as possible.' Thus the tedious process of trying to get both wrestlers to clinch, which was excruciating to watch and also determined the outcome of numerous matches on the most subjective and petty of criteria, will be left to matches under FILA's rules.

The other idea was to create a situation where freestyle and Greco were merged. Willis envisions a situation where 'one style can't dominate over the other one.'

Of course, everyone wants to know how the Greco wrestlers will fare with leg attacks allowed. 'That's the big question,' Willis acknowledged. He stated that in practice matches under these rules that the Greco wrestlers 'held their own and were beating freestyle guys.' He added, 'You would think that the freestyle guys would dominate,' but that was not the case. One reason was that the freestyle wrestlers were 'not used to defending lifts and throws without their feet.'

These rules are also clearly designed to emphasize and encourage throws and lifts. The biggest star wrestler at the 2004 Olympics was Egypt's Greco-Roman gold medalist Karam Gaber, a specialist in hitting high-flying throws. Here Real Pro Wrestling seeks to create conditions where the most exciting moves and holds in wrestling can be executed with enough regularity that the fans keep coming back.

That requires wrestlers who have mastered many different types of techniques. 'We're after a complete wrestler,' stated Willis.

While there will be no submissions in Real Pro Wrestling, Willis said his organization has also borrowed from that great style of wrestling as well. A wrestler 'can crank an arm or leg in the direction of them' but not too far against the joint. He gave as an example the bar-arm and similar moves which are not allowed by FILA.

Wrestlers can thus use these holds to maneuver their opponents onto their backs. But if there is 'nowhere you can relieve the pressure, it's illegal.'

Willis said that Real Pro Wrestling would thus 'go a little in the submission direction, too, but not a whole lot.'

Still, this new style being developed by Real Pro Wrestling does aim to combine the best and most entertaining aspects of freestyle and Greco, while adding these elements from sumo and submission wrestling.

Of course, wrestling's grand climax, its knockout, home run, and touchdown combined, the pin, is the most prized finish to a match. 'We love the pin,' said Willis. Pins were worth 15 team points at the 2002 pilot, and are expected to be similarly rewarded here.

The action at the 2002 pilot was so continuous that in all the matches held then, there were no clinches needed under the rules of that time that mandated them after scoreless first periods. The same is also anticipated here.

On a broader note, Willis hopes that this new hybrid style will become the 'solution to both styles.' Down the road he wants to have the colleges switch over to it, and also push this style into international wrestling.

But first Real Pro Wrestling must succeed in establishing its organization in the U.S.

'I hope we chose the right way,' remarked Willis. So do a lot of other people.

To be continued.

CLARK COUNTY (NEV.) JUDGE DENIES MOTION TO PREVENT UFC® FROM HOLDING WELTERWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT, OCT. 22 Former Welterweight Champ BJ Penn Sought To Stop Title Bout

LAS VEGAS, NEV., September 30, 2004...The scheduled Ultimate Fighting Championship® welterweight title fight between former champion Matt Hughes (37-4-0) from Hillsboro, Ill., and Georges St. Pierre (7-0-0) of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, will come off as scheduled October 22 at UFC 50: War Of 04 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ, following the recent (Tuesday, Sept. 28) ruling by a Clark County (Nev.) judge that denied a motion by former champion BJ Penn that sought to prevent the title bout.

Clark County (Nev.) District Court Judge Ken Cory denied the motion and an official court order concerning the denial will be issued in the near future.

"The judge listened to hours of legal arguments and testimony, then ruled that BJ did not have the right to stop the UFC welterweight championship from taking place on October 22. We are pleased that the judge did not allow BJ to use the court system to prevent us from conducting our business," said Dana White, UFC president. "We have no hard feelings towards BJ and wish him well with his career in K-1."

Penn won the UFC welterweight title January 31 in Las Vegas with a first-round, tap out victory over Hughes. But he then signed a contract to fight in K-1, an international kickboxing organization.

PENN'S FUTURE

This weekend we have been discussing the future of BJ Penn, both legally as well as the fight game. If you missed Friday's show, it's defintely worth your while to check it out and listen again...

Graciefighter's website is reporting that Rodrigo Gracie vs. BJ Penn appears to be just about a done deal. Another fight in the works for the same card is Royler Gracie vs. Baret Yoshida. The card is still unfolding but our sources tell us that Rumble on the Rock will be hosting the show on November the 20th in Hawaii. Apparently there is some type of involvement with the K-1 organization, with K-1 supplying fighters and maybe even co-promoting the show. The feud with BJ Penn and the UFC has sunken to it's lowest point and BJ is vowing to make an organization to rival any UFC show. With Rodrigo and Royler on the show he may well have.

COMBAT SPORTS MEDIA NOTES: CAN BOXERS' UNION AND REAL PRO WRESTLING SHAKE UP THE WORLD?

There are two exciting, historical, and seemingly unrelated stories in the combat sports world about which I have been providing extensive, and almost exclusive, no-holds-barred coverage.

One is about the emergence of the Joint Association of Boxers, better known as JAB. This organization, affiliated with the Teamsters, is the fledgling boxers' union. The other story is the advancement of the attempt to create a league for real, professional Olympic-style wrestling, by the group known as Real Pro Wrestling.

Both of these emerging groups have recently made important strides forward. The Sept. 30 'Broadway Boxing' show in New York was the first one where promoter Lou DiBella worked with JAB.

I had an in-depth discussion this week in New York about JAB's development with its president, former light heavyweight world champion Eddie Mustafa Muhammad. A report of that discussion appears in a piece called 'The State of the Union - The Boxers' Union.' This has just been posted on Boxingranks.com, and can be seen at:

http://www.boxingranks.com/

Also in that article are comments by Eddie Mustafa Muhammad about the opening of discussions between JAB and boxing's most influential promoter, Don King, as well as comments by King himself.

I also have been giving extensive coverage to the latest developments involving Real Pro Wrestling. This group has a television deal to air fifteen weekly shows in the U.S. beginning on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at 4 PM ET, on the PAX television network. The tapings for these shows will take place next week, Oct. 8-9, in Los Angeles.

I will be attending these tapings. I also will be reporting on them both for Grappling and the ADCC News( http://news.adcombat.com/ ). Make sure to check out my latest articles on the ADCC News for more on Real Pro Wrestling.

There has never been a union for boxers in the U.S., the last major professional sport where the athletes have virtually no protection. Previous attempts to unionize boxers have never gotten as far as JAB has.

There has been no real, professional wrestling in the U.S. for over 80 years. Previous attempts in the past few decades to create such a league have never gotten as far as Real Pro Wrestling has.

There actually is much more in common between JAB and Real Pro Wrestling than meets the eye. Both are in their very early stages of development. Neither has an actual office yet. Both their web sites have little traffic. Both are still facing uphill battles to succeed. And both face armies of skeptics within their own sports.

More importantly, if either or both do succeed in accomplishing their missions, then they will undoubtedly change the face of their sports at least for decades to come, and definitely for the better. Both boxing and wrestling have long lacked the types of structures and institutions which are needed for legitimate pro sports.

If both JAB and Real Pro Wrestling can succeed in their given sports and thus add much-needed legitimacy and prestige to them, then both pro boxing and pro wrestling have a shot at regaining in the early part of this 21st Century the tremendous stature which they both enjoyed in the early part of the 20th Century.

And that would indeed be a pleasure for me to report.

Quinton Jackson: Fighting and His new Found Faith
Interview By Benny Henderson Jr. (October 4th, 2004)

Pride fighter and warrior of the ring Quinton Jackson, known to the fans and his opponents simply as "Rampage", has felt the thrill of victory, the pain of defeat and now he has felt the touch of God.

The twenty-six year-old who captivated the MMA world with his shoot from the hip straight talking attitude along with his massive fighting ability, may be a changed man at heart, but in battle he still has the killer instinct that propelled him in to the top of the light heavyweight division.

Since his debut back in 1999 in an ISCF event, the power slamming Jackson has compiled a 21-4 career record with 10 stoppages by knockout, seven by submission and four by decision. Almost a year ago he suffered his fourth loss at the hands of Wanderlei Silva at the Pride-Final Conflict event on the same night he defeated Chuck Liddell. On October 31st he will get his chance for revenge against Silva for the Pride FC middleweight championship on the event titled "High Octane".

But revenge isn’t what is on Jackson’s mind - just being the best he can be for God is his new mission and he will do his best to accomplish it. The born again Christian hasn’t lost his fighting edge or his ability to open up a can of hurt on his opponents, but he has gained peace and a sense of reasoning in his life that he has never felt before that he believes he can use towards raising his son and competing in the sport.

So, will we see the old Quinton Jackson that lived his life on the edge with no regard for what could happen to him? No, that man is dead and a new creation has been born. But in the ring, you will still witness the bold-fisted fighter that pummeled his opponents into defeat. And this time he has God on his side and he isn’t ashamed to tell the world. In a phone interview conducted by Max Fighting, Quinton talked about his newfound faith and gave some thoughts on his upcoming bout.

Benny Henderson Jr. - What are your thoughts on your rematch against Wanderlei Silva and how will you approach this fight differently than before?

Quinton Jackson - What I’ll be doing different in this fight? I’ll be fighting for the Lord. That’s the only thing I’ll be doing different.

BH - How much different are you since you become a born again Christian?

QJ - I am a new person

BH - Do people treat you differently?

QJ - Oh yes, some people treat me different. Some of my friends don’t understand because they have different religions - some that I have never heard of. Some of my friends treat me different, and I lost a few friends but not many. Some friends are kind of like getting interested in the whole Christian and Jesus Christ stuff because they see me and they knew how I was. They seen that I used to have sex with all these different girls and said bad words all the time and would go out drinking in the clubs and all that stuff - they seen that. Now they see me and I talk about Jesus Christ and God and stuff. At first they thought that I have gone crazy because the same day I was touched with the Holy Ghost I had to go train, and when he touches you it is so powerful you want to tell everybody about it. It is like that Cheerios commercial when the guy was telling everybody about lowering his cholesterol; it’s like that you want to tell everybody, even people you don’t even know. It was like that for three days and then after that I came down. I was so happy and I looked at all my friends and I was hoping he would change all my friends liked he changed me but he didn’t, so then I got sad about my friends because I know what I inherited and I know what my friends are missing out on. So I am real happy and my friends see this.

BH - How will being a Christian play a part in your career now, how will you incorporate it into your career?

QJ - Like I tell people man, I always have been a Christian. People misunderstand Christianity, ok, that’s why it is so confusing. People will see a Christian still sinning and cussing - I was a Christian but that was my religion. I practiced Christianity but now since I am born again God has touched me and Jesus lives in my heart. So now I know, even though I was a Christian I didn’t know 100% what was out there or if there was a God or if Jesus really existed. That was what I was taught all my life growing up. But now since he touched me I know, so now that I know I am going to watch what I do. Think about all the times I sinned and I thought I was by myself - God was watching. Think about all the bad deeds I did with my girlfriend, all the bad sex and all the bad things - my God was watching me. So now since I am born again I am going to watch what I do. I don’t want to do anything that defiles him or makes him angry.

BH - What do you hope to accomplish in MMA and in life?

QJ - I just hope to accomplish being the best servant to God that I can be and if he can use me in MMA and reach out so everybody can see how he has changed my life. He has helped me out a great deal since I was born again. My goal is to be the best servant to the Lord that I can be. Whatever he wants me to do, that’s what I want to do - if it’s God’s will for me to be the best fighter in the world that’s what I am going to do. I want to do his will.

BH - How important is it to get this win back from Wanderlei Silva?

QJ - It’s not that important at all right now; that’s the least important thing to me right now. The most important thing to me is that I serve God. Fighting is my job right?

BH - Yes sir.

QJ - The bible says that if we are working don’t work like we are working for our bosses but work like we are doing it straight for God. So I am to glorify him in every way that I can so I am working for him. God is watching me himself. He is my boss so I am gong to give him 120%. If it is God’s will for me to win and be champion, that’s what is going to happen.

BH - What about your training regime, how do you train for fights?

QJ - It is hard training. You have to train in three different arts. You have to have good cardio and eat right. It’s not like boxing where you go in there and spar and jump rope, hit pads and stuff. You have to grapple and do grappling drills and do wrestling and wrestling drills, do jiu-jitsu and jiu-jitsu drills, Muay Thai kickboxing and Muay Thai kickboxing drills and you have to run and eat right, so it is hard training. I train six days a week and two times a day.

BH - What are your disciplines?

QJ - I am a wrestler and in Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu.

BH - There is a lot of punishment in your business and a lot of guys could get hurt easily, do you ever think about the lasting effects of your sport? Do you [Breaks into question]

QJ - Let me cut you off right now man. That’s a misunderstanding, man. Actually more people easily get hurt in boxing than in my sport. My sport is the safest full contact sport out there. It is safer than kickboxing and boxing because in boxing they will go twelve rounds and get punched in the head. Count up all those punches to the head they might get hit a few hundred times in the head in a fight. In some of my fights I might get hit in the head once or twice. People don’t even punch as hard in my sport as they do in boxing. There are a lot of deaths due to boxing and they don’t even tell you about that. And I don’t care what anybody says, the reason that Muhammad Ali is the way he is now is because of the rope a dope and because he is a boxer. All these boxers talking slow and stuff like that; boxing is dangerous. In my sport if something goes wrong you can tap out anytime and the referee will stop the fight. There isn’t no shame in stopping the fight in our sport. Boxing, they get knocked down and they count to eight and they get back up and start getting punched again and there is a reason why they got knocked down - their brain is in trauma. Everybody tries to say that our sport is dangerous because somebody may get beat up or be put in an arm bar or get choked. I would rather get my arm broke than get brain damage any day. Which one you want?

BH - Didn’t you slam one of your opponents and knock him out recently in a fight?

QJ – Yeah.

BH - What about the lasting effects of that? I mean that could hurt somebody too you believe?

QJ - Yeah, but that guy got knocked out by one slam; he didn’t get knocked out by several punches to the head. Think about it.

BH - That’s cool, I am just trying to make a good interview.

QJ - I know, I know. I’m just throwing it out there too. Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not getting upset or angry in any way. I’m just giving you an interview.

BH - I appreciate your time; it means a lot.

QJ - All right, just don’t misunderstand me. Write it down just like I said.

BH - What about after Silva, is there anybody you want to battle with?

QJ - No, don’t misunderstand. It’s just my job, I don’t go out there and choose whom I fight; they send them to me and I fight them.

BH - If somebody came up to you and said that they wanted to get into MMA like you, what would you tell them?

QJ - At first I would ask them whom they were fighting for; if you want to fight who are you fighting for? People don’t know; a lot of people are going to think I am crazy when I say this but those are the people who are brainwashed. But people have been taught all their lives good and bad - there’s good and bad in this world. God is good and the devil is bad, so who you fighting for? Before, I was fighting for the devil. I was doing all this cussing and doing all those bad things. If you want to fight and make all this money, who you fighting for? If you are fighting for God you are always going to be on top and have a good life, but if you are fighting for the devil you aren’t going to last long. Who are you fighting for - good or bad? That’s the first thing you need to know. If you are fighting for God he is going to make a way for you to train and put you in all the right situations. The devil isn’t going to take care of you; he is going to lie to you and make you spend all of your money. Look at Mike Tyson. Mike Tyson is fighting for the wrong team; that’s my point right there, who you fighting for? It doesn’t matter what you have to learn or what you’ve got to but whom you’re fighting for.

BH - Where do you see the future of your sport, do you feel it will be more mainstream than boxing or stay where it is?

QJ - I know it is going to get more mainstream because boxing is so corrupt. There isn’t no telling what’s going on in boxing and it’s already getting boring. So I see our sport getting mainstream pretty soon, hopefully in my career time so I can come out there and touch a lot of people so they can see my style. God gave me a different style because he didn’t give anybody a style like me. So hopefully we can get more mainstream so I can show the world what is up and what is real.

BH - Looking at yourself now, do you feel that it is important to be a good role model for the kids?

QJ - Yes, look at all those role models out there like 50 Cent or even Tupac and Eminem or whoever is out there. Those are some negative role models and kids have the wrong role models; they need to know that that stuff there isn’t going to last. They are living large with the big houses and cars but you can’t take it with you and it isn’t going to last. God made us last for eternity and the world’s possessions aren’t going to last. Jesus, I want to go to his kingdom and he told us plain as day his kingdom is not of this world.

BH - Is there anything you want to add to this interview?

QJ – Yes, there is something I want to say to the fans. I want to let everybody know that I am still the same person. God has made me what he wanted me to be. I still have the same personality and joke around with my friends and laugh. I love to laugh. I still do the same things. Who is the person who thinks that living for God is a weakness? It is the biggest strength that I have ever discovered. People think because you are a Christian you are weak, but I have strength. I have no fear of dying now and I don’t care what anybody says to me, everybody can be brainwashed by the world and with what the television shows you and from what you hear on the radio. You can be brainwashed by this world and the devil and be in all the evil stuff of this world; I look around and I all I see is evil. I was brainwashed and I got tired of it, but God heard my cries and was with me before I was born again. I was on the plane with my coach and I told him I was tired of being brainwashed and I knew I was brainwashed. Let the world read this. Go ahead and be foolish and say bad things about me just because I want to live right for my son, do good and be happy and be good to people. Would people be more satisfied if I came out and said that I worshiped the devil now and doing bad things and I don’t love the fans anymore? I’m telling all the fans that I love all of ya’ll and I am here for ya’ll. That’s why I put my phone number out there. That’s why I am the way I am for the fans. Now the fans want to talk bad about me because I went to the Lord? Some fans still support me but a lot of the fans became haters. They are haters, but I am a lover. If you don’t like me because I turned to Christ and because I was born again and I’m God’s soldier, you’re a hater and I’m a lover.

Dewey Cooper: A Double Threat
By Jeff Mayweather, (September 15, 2004)

The guy I'm talking about goes by the name of Dewey Cooper or his alter ego Black Kobra. He is a double threat in two very brutal sports. He's a Kick Boxer who fights in K-1, where some of the best kick boxers in the world compete. He also boxes professional, sporting a 10-0-2, 7 KO's record.

I'm his trainer when it comes to stepping in the boxing ring. He's not only a double threat in the ring he has two very diverse personalities, depending on who you're talking to at the time. If you're talking to Dewey Cooper you're talking to a very nice, calm, articulate young man who looks as though he should be a professional model. A college graduate from the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, a soft spoken and extremely polite guy.

The other guy, Black Kobra, is altogether different. Dewey becomes his alter ego come fight time. He really psyches himself up and feels invincible when the Kobra takes control of his consciousness. He is ready to go to war.

Even in his everyday life Cooper seems to be chameleon like. Just as diverse as Dewey is to Black Kobra, so too is his taste in music. I often go to his house to train him. One day I come over he's listening to rock and roll another time I come by he's listening to hard core gangster rap. Dewey can be a very hard guy to gauge, which may be by design.

One thing I can say about Dewey, he is one of the hardest working athletes on this planet. I would put his work ethic up against any athlete in the world. There are no shortcuts for Dewey. My main concern with him is not to over train. He's extremely driven and has a sincere passion for combat. He thrives on being challenged. In K-1 he weighs the bare minimum of 200 lbs., while most of his opponents weigh anywhere from 230 lbs. all the way up to 300 lbs.

He has fought some of the very best that K-1 has to offer ... Carter Williams, Gary Goodrich, Mighty Mo and Michael McDonald, more than holding his own against them all, actually beating three of the four mentioned, only losing to McDonald. He has mass appeal in his hometown of Las Vegas; the crowds go wild when they see Dewey Cooper step in the ring. Be it K-1 or Boxing he delivers action; win, lose or draw you won't leave disappointed in his efforts.

On September 17th, one night before the big show, Cooper will once again entertain the local fans. The stage won't be as big, nor will the lights be as bright, but one thing is for sure, Dewey will come to fight.

Cooper has finally turned that corner I've been looking for, with his transition as a fighter (boxer). He's understanding that the basic rule of boxing is to hit and not get hit. He has become a defensive minded fighter first, but still has that warrior mentality inside of him. His attitude used to be that once he got hit he immediately had to get you back with no plan of attack, other than going straight at his opponent, fearless to a fault. So far we have been able to remain unbeaten while learning on the job. We're getting a little better with each passing day and don't be surprised if one day you see this young man challenging for the World Title at Cruiserweight and don't be surprised if he wins.

Right now Cooper has a very busy schedule ahead of him; still holding down a job and finding time to be a professional athlete in two very tough sports certainly makes him a double threat.

A Look Back At the latest KOTC!

San Jacinto, CA - The most recent King Of Te Cage card was as ambitious as their business plan for next year. As reported before, the next KOTC pay-per-view card will reach an estimated 60 million homes due to their new contract with InDemand. Also next year, according to promoter Terry Trebilcock, KOTC and sister show Gladiator Challenge will hold 60 shows in one year.

On this card Joey Villasenor proved to be the newest star out of New Mexico with his dominating win over Team Quest’s Brian Foster. Villasenor staggered Foster early on and never let up as he used mostly a ground-and-pound strategy to take the vacant Middleweight belt.

In other belt news Frankie Bollinger survived a guillotine and armbar attempts by Richard Goodwin before he got his own submission on the way to the Bantamweight belt.

The other belt bout, a Welterweight title fight between Thomas Denny and James Fanshier, was postponed when Denny reportedly hurt himself in training. The fight is now scheduled for November’s pay-per-view card.

Gladiator Challenge’s Bantamweight Champion Urijah Faber had a good showing against Rami Boukai in what may have been one of the most even fights of the night while Robert Emerson and Joe Camacho was mainly a standup kickboxing and Muay Thai battle opening up the main card.

The real treat of the night was the return of Harris Sarmiento. Sarmiento, fighting out of 808 Fight Factory in Hawaii, took the MMA world by storm earlier this year with competitive fights in WEC, SuperBrawl, and Rumble On The Rock. He won the Hawaii qualifier for this year’s SuperBrawl/Extreme Challenge tournament series which this year focused on the Lightweights. Although his one loss this year was in the first round of the tournament finals he is now back to carve his name in the Lightweight division. Keep an eye out for this Lightweight to be one of the names to beat in the months to come.

TRINIDAD STOPS MAYORGA IN EIGHT, AS FANS DELIGHT IN TITO'S RETURN

NEW YORK, Oct. 2 -- In a modern classic and instant 'fight of the year' candidate, the Puerto Rico-based Felix 'Tito' Trinidad triumphantly returned to the ring after a 29-month absence by scoring a brutal eighth-round TKO over fellow former world champion, Ricardo Mayorga of Nicaragua, in a middleweight fight Saturday night in front of a near-sellout crowd at Madison Square Garden. As the vast majority of the more than 17,000 fans wildly cheered him on, Trinidad scored three knockdowns in the eighth round, the last crumpling Mayorga in the corner and resulting in referee Steve Smoger stopping the fight at 2:39 of that round.

Fears that Trinidad's self-imposed layoff would leave him rusty and without quick reflexes were quickly dispelled in the first round. While Mayorga started out the aggressor, midway through the opening round Trinidad began to land clean shots, including some nice left hooks, and ended the round with a strong flurry to take the round on two of the three judges' scorecards.

Trinidad found his range better in the second and started scoring well with his jab. Both men continued fighting at a sometimes maddening pace, engaging in spirited exchanges, although Trinidad was getting the better of them at this point.

Just as it appeared that the fight may have been settling into a pattern favorable to Trinidad, Mayorga landed an overhand right in the third round that unbalanced Trinidad and had him touch the mat with his glove. It was scored a knockdown, and gave the round to Mayorga, 10-8, on all the scorecards.

The fourth round was closer, but by the fifth Trinidad's relentless assault of jabs and combinations was setting the pace. Trinidad closed the fifth with a marvelous flurry of punches which Mayorga had little choice but to take as he was stuck on the ropes. That earned Trinidad 10-8 scores on two of the judges' scorecards.

In the sixth Mayorga was in total retreat, but a Trinidad punch that landed on Mayorga's thigh was ruled a low blow. Mayorga took a respite, and tried to rally when the action resumed. But it was too little, too late.

Trinidad continued to dominate in the seventh, establishing his jab and later punishing Mayorga as he lay on the ropes and then held onto his foe.

The eighth and what turned out to be final round saw Mayorga gamely try to rally once again, but to no avail. Midway through the round Trinidad scored a knockdown with a left to the body. This was the first time Mayorga had ever been knocked down. It would not be the last, as just seconds later Trinidad landed a powerful right hand to the head. Mayorga arose once more, only to be met by an unanswered and nonstop flurry by Trinidad that sent him to the canvas for the third time. While there was no three knockdown rule in this fight, referee Steve Smoger ruled that the fallen and battered Mayorga could not continue. The verdict as a TKO victory for Trinidad at 2:39 of the eighth round.

The final punchstats tell something of the furious story of this memorable fight. Trinidad threw 460 punches and landed 290, for an unbelievable 63 percent. Mayorga actually threw more punches than Trinidad, 564, but only landed 141, for just 25 percent. Trinidad landed 72 of 131 jabs thrown, for a whopping 55 percent. Mayorga landed just 13 of 173 jabs, for just 8 percent. In power punches, Trinidad's dominance was also brutally obvious. He landed 218 of 329 power punches, for an incredible 66 percent. Mayorga landed just 128 of 391 power punches for 33 percent.

The official scorecards after seven rounds had two judges having Trinidad leading, 68-64, with the other also having him ahead, 67-64.

Trinidad's record now stands at 42-1 with 34 KOs. Mayorga falls to 26-5-1 with 22 KOs.

After the fight Trinidad noted that Mayorga was a 'hard fighter' who 'takes a lot of punches.' The win gave Trinidad a minor title, but that was needed to restart him on the road to gaining a rematch with Bernard Hopkins, who had knocked him out in this same arena three years ago to unify the middleweight titles. Trinidad gave as one of the main reasons for his layoff the failure of such a rematch to be made and that there thus 'wasn't any big fight for me.'

Promoter Don King reported after the fight that the gate had been $4.65 million, the third-largest in Madison Square Garden history. Both he and Trinidad also said that they will soon determine whom Trinidad fights next.

The Trinidad-Mayorga fight was broadcast live in the U.S. on HBO pay-per-view. It will be rebroadcast next Sat., Oct. 9, beginning at 11 PM ET/PT and 10 PM CT.

Wallid Ismail Interview
Jungle Fight Championship - October 23, 2004
www.junglefightchampionship.com

Q: How did the Jungle Fight Championship start?

A: The idea came from Mr. Inoki, who has done charity work for his entire life. He especially is interested in saving the environment. Mr. Inoki is very familiar with Brazil. When he was a child he went there by ship from Japan and worked in the coffee plantations for several years. But he always was a natural athlete and was a shot put champion in Japan when he was 15 years old. A martial arts master from Japan went to Brazil to do some demonstrations, and when he arrived there he heard about a big Japanese guy who was very athletically talented and so he went to meet Mr. Inoki and started to teach him. Mr. Inoki learned so fast that the master took him back to Japan and started to enter him in fighting competitions and he eventually became the most famous modern grappler to ever come out of Asia. He was actually responsible for starting the entire no-holds-barred movement in Japan by defeating masters from different styles such as karate, judo, kung-fu, and more. So Mr. Inoki decided that he wanted to help to save the Amazon rainforest from all the destruction that has been going on there. So Jungle Fight Championship is his way of bringing attention to the cause of helping to preserve it.

Q: What are the rules of Jungle Fight Championship?

A: We adapted the rules of traditional vale tudo so it could be shown on television, so more people could hear the message. So the rules include no headbutts, no elbows in the face, no strikes to the spine of the back of the head, and no kicking to the head when your opponent is down. These new rules are helping to make the sport grow again in Brazil, after it was almost banned for too much violence and too many riots. These are the same rules that shows all over the world are using now and it helping to attract fans everywhere. We have three five minutes rounds, which also helps to keep the action going and also gives the fighters some time to rest. We emphasize action in the bouts and pick fighters that we know are going to come out and be active and aggressive.

Q: What has the reaction been to Jungle Fight Championship?

A: Everybody loved the first two shows and in Brazil they broke the record for pay-per-view vale tudo events. They were the most-watched events of their kind ever, there. And that’s saying a lot when you include PrideFC, UFC, and all the other events that have been held there over the years. We’ve showcased the best grapplers and jiu-jitsu fighters in the world such as Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, Vladymir Matyushenko, Bibiano Fernandes, Bobby Hoffman, Carlos Barretto, and Mark Shultz. The next event will have an amazing card. W

Q: When is your next event?

A: October 23, Manaus, Amazon, which is a Saturday. Its in a beautiful five-star hotel called the Tropical Eco Resort. It’s a beautiful place that is right between the city, jungle, and river. There is no place like it in the world. It is wild and civilized at the same time. We’re trying to do in the rest of the world what the Fertitta brothers have done in the U.S. to help promote the sport and to help it grow. The Fertitta brothers basically saved the UFC and without them there probably wouldn’t be any mainstream mixed martial arts events in the U.S. right now. Everyone owes them a debt of gratitude and in many ways we’re trying to emulate their success.

Q: Is it easy for American fans who want to see it live to get to?

A: It is only a four hour flight from Miami, and we’ve actually went out of our way to put together some great travel and hotel packages which include tickets to the fight. No other event in the world is trying to help out the fans by providing these types of special travel arrangements. You can get details at www.junglefightchampionship.com. People can come to the Amazon, stay at a great hotel, do some unforgettable sightseeing, go to the fights, and then also plant a tree and get a certificate for it to symbolize their support for saving the rainforest. Its an unique experience and everyone who goes will never forget it.

Euphoria Fighter: Spain's DAVID GAONA

On October 15th Euphoria MFC returns to Atlantic City, New Jersey for a card that so far has floored most fans, especially those of the Lightweight fighters. Former HOOKnSHOOT Welterweight Champion and ADCC News #2 ranked Lightweight Yves Edwards, former HOOKnSHOOT Lightweight Champion and #9 ranked Hermes Franca, former Shooto Champion Joakim Hansen, former KOTC Champion and Abu Dhabi North American trials runner-up Alberto Crane…this tournament is on the verge of ridiculously packed with top talent as a fighter the level of Rich Clementi is “only” a UFC vet!

And the alternate bracket? The first fight of the night is Team Quest shooting star Ryan Schultz against David Gaona from SHOOT Spain. Not much is known about Gaona other than he is one of several international fighters on this card, a fact itself which makes this show stand out. On the verge of his big break we caught up with David by e-mail.

KM: You are fighting Ryan Schultz at Euphoria MFC. What do you know about Schultz? DG: The fact that he is a member of Team Quest assures that he is an excellent fighter. He is, also, a very experienced fighter.

KM: What do you think of fighting him? DG: I am very proud and satisfies me a lot facing such a good fighter.

KM: All I found on you on the internet as far as MMA is one fight against Augusto Frota. I saw on the shootfightingspain.com you are the European Pankration runner-up. Can you tell us more about your background? DG: Really, my activity is centered more on my job as an Instructor than in Competition. On the other side, Augusto Frota is the official representative of Rodrigo “Minotauro” in Europe and that was my first fight at MMA, because before this I had only fought in Pankration.

KM: How are you training for this fight? DG: I train with the other partners of my Team and I follow the habitual routine that our coach Alejandro Iglesias imposes us. I have excellent training partners in our Team such as, Daniel Tabera, M-1 Champion and he stays UNDEFEATED; Tulio Palhares, UFC-Brazil Champion; Julián González, 3 x Ultimate Combat Champion or Javier Garcia, who is the most experienced Spaniard in MMA. I must thank all of them their support and help during the training.

KM: I think this is your first fight in the US. Ever been here before? What are your thoughts on returning/coming to the States? DG: This is the first time I go to the US and I am very excited. I am very happy because of that and I must thank his confidence to Miguel Iturrate, Euphoria MFC matchmaker, for having selected me as for taking part at his event.

KM: I think the time zone difference between Spain and New Jersey is six hours. Do you think this is a factor and if so how are you planning on adjusting? DG: I am not worried for that at all. I will fight wherever, however and against anyone.

KM: Please tell us what it is like being a fighter in Spain. How far do you have to travel to see or fight in a show? Are there a lot of fans or are you on your own? Can a fighter in any martial art (including boxing etc) make a living at competition? DG: I think it is not important the fact of talking about Spain or any other country. I really think that it is very hard to make a living at competition in any country of the world. I have the luck of being Instructor in the IVAD, the Biggest MMA Center in the world and as for that I am an MMA professional because I only make a living at fighting. But I consider that it is really hard to make a living at MMA and as for that every people who try it have all my admiration and respect.

KM: In the US we haven’t seen any fighters in MMA from Spain. I’ve seen Daniel Tabera in Russia twice but don’t recall any others. Do you think the world has been overlooking Spain? DG: Team S.H.O.O.T. represents the IVAD at MMA events all over the world. We are the MMA pioneers in Spain and our team takes part at approximately at one international event per month in different countries because we don´t take part at any event in our country. As regards Daniel Tabera, who you saw in Russia twice (I think one of them fighting against Gilbert Yvel), he will take part at Euphoria MFC at the event on December and we are very excited for this.

KM: What does being from Spain mean to you regarding this next show?
Do you feel you are representing Spain or just your gym/team? DG: Of course, I will represent both. I am very proud because of this!

KM: Any sponsors to thank or anything else to get across to the fans? DG: Yes, I want to thank my Instructor, Judá Palmero for all his support and to you, Keith, for being so kind and interview me. Thank you.

PENN'S LAWYER TALKS UFC

Steven Straus, the laywer for
BJ Penn was on MMAWeekly Radio. There was plenty of talk regarding the recent injuction filed by BJ Penn. Among the topics discussed, Straus said that UFC's argument in court was that BJ can't stop this fight because this welterweight title fight isn't an actual championship belt...it's just an interim "made up" belt according to Straus.

Straus proceeded say that fans are getting the "short end of the stick" for being deceived into thinking that two fighters are fighting for the "real" belt. Straus said that the UFC was not obligated to re-sign BJ because his contract was over after the Hughes fight.

There was plenty more things discussed in this 20 minute discussion that you can check out right now on the radio archive section. Also Dana White will give his comments to MMAWeekly this weekend as well.

PENN VS GRACIE?

BJ Penn came on MMAWeekly Radio and talked about his future, which includes fights in November for Rumble on the Rock and December in K-1. Penn didn't discuss who he would face in November, other than just saying, "It will be a top ranked fighter."

Penn said his fight in K-1 would be against a fighter who is much heavier than him. Basically Penn said the fighter he would compete against would be "185 pounds".

The talk right now is that the K-1 fight will most likely take place against Rodrigo Gracie, but as of now, they are working on getting the paper work signed for that fight.

Penn also discussed what he thought about the UFC, his future with the company, and who he would like to fight in November at the upcoming Rumble on the Rock show on November 20th. You can listen now at MMAWeekly Radio.

Inoki’s Oldest Soldier!
by: M. Dunlop

Three times a week, Mr. Inoki gets up early, takes his Volkswagen out of the garage and drives a few miles to teach martial arts at a university in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In the afternoon, he follows a routine that he has been keeping for 34 years, teaching Karate-do in Shoto-kan Academy, close to the world famous Ipanema beach. Of course, we are not talking about pro-wrestler Antonio Inoki, the leader and promoter of Jungle Fight. In fact, our subject does not even enjoy MMA: meet Hiroyasu Inoki, Antonio’s older brother!

Master Hiroyasu, a Karate-do black belt 7th Dan, arrived in Brazil with his now famous brother in 1957, but they chose their own paths: 'He was a phenomenon as an athlete, one in ten thousand. In my case, it’s just sweat and dedication', says a humble Hiroyasu Inoki, now 64 years old.

But the other Inoki is a great Master in his own right. His mental power, strength and spiritual energy inspire admiration in his students, whose students represent one of the oldest Karate classes in Rio de Janeiro. 'Of all universities I visited, Inoki is the greatest Master I met. Though he weights 65kg, no one can push him. Three men try and he keeps himself still! He’s amazing', says a respected writer and teacher in Rio de Janeiro, Muniz Sodre, 61 years old. Sodre is one of the almost 30 black belts in Inoki’s oldest class, which includes famous business men, doctors, cops and even a rocket scientist, Demetrio Bastos, 67 years-old. 'We do not fight to make money, but to make us full of life. And we are happy and grateful to Inoki for that', says the space scientist.

André Pederneiras
By Eduardo Ferreira

A big mess in Shooto

Nova União leader, André Pederneiras arrived this week from Japan, where he coached Róbson Moura for the Shooto's Bantamweight belt dispute against Mamoru. The polemic judges decision to Mamoru outraged not only the Brazilian team, but also displeased the local supporters, the Japanese press and the Shooto's president Kazuhiro Sakamoto. During an exclusive to TATAME.com, Dedé explains what happened on Robinho's fight, tell us the Sakamoto's reaction with the result and says what Nova União will do for the next Shooto editions.

What happened with Robinho?

This time the Japanese joked with us. Robinho took Mamoru to the ground during the three rounds. On the first one, he took the Japanese down, took his back and mounted on him, in almost 15 sec. He spent all the first round on top position. In the second round, he did the same thing, but at the end of the time, lasting two minutes, Mamoru went to the inside guard position. On the final round, Robinho tried a guillotine choke twice and a foot-lock, but Mamoru escaped going to the on top position. At the end of the bout, one judge gave a draw and the other two gave to Mamoru. Robinho got mad!

What was the reaction of the people at the audience?

A lot of boos. Not more because Mamoru is Japanese. When Robinho was in the cloakroom, Shooto's president, Kazuhiro Nakamura went there and told to everyone that Shooto did a mistake, Robinho did better and deserved the victory.

Did Sakamoto offer a third fight between Mamoru and Robinho?

He did. He asked me whether Robinho wanted to face Mamoru again or not. He also asked me to write a letter to the Shooto commission complaining about the result and asking for a result review. I already wrote it and I'm waiting for an answer, if they will call the fight a draw or they will give a no contest.

Shall it affect Nova União's presence at Shooto? Can you stop fighting there?

I can't go there to happen something like that. But I can't leave Shooto. Where will they fight? Vitor Shaolin even can do it, but Robinho and Loro can't. They're too light and there isn't another tournament to their weight. Robinho spent two months training in Rio, left his family and his gym in Ribeirão Preto to fight for this belt and they did it! I like Shooto people, but they can't do it. What shall I say to my fighters? They charge me. I'm not only a coach, but I'm their manager too.

And what about Shaolin? Can he abandon Shooto to fight in another show?

I'm afraid about it, because Shaolin is going to defend his belt at the end of the year. He'll face a tough guy who the Japanese want to put him as an idol. If Shooto do something like they did with Robinho, Shaolin will not more fight there.

Marcos Loro won more fight. When do you think he will be fighting for the title?

He might fight for the belt. I guess they will do the same they did with Robinho, postponing the fight as long as they can.

Vitor Belfort ready to return to BTT

After losing the UFC Middle Heavyweight belt, Vitor Belfort is going to several changes at his training. If before he thought he was better alone, now he has been considering to return to his old team, the Brazilian Top Team. The deal hasn't be signed, but it might be work because BTT already agreed with it. Now Belfort has everything to become the new phenomenon of International MMA.

De La Riva: full schedule until 2005

The loss suffered in Japan to Japanese Yuki Nakai has not been accepted by BJJ black belt Ricardo De La Riva, who complained the fight result: "I was below him and he attacked my foot. Then I swept him and the referee didn't give me two points and more: gave him a advantage point. After this I reached his half guard and I put one hook, but once again the referee did not give any point. It was a really odd fight, I think," protested De La Riva.

Now BJJ black belt has been busy until next year. "I conducted four seminars in Tokyo and I have three other trips scheduled until December. On next November 6 I will by flying to US, to conduct seminars in Indianapolis and Detroit. Then I'll go to France and then Spain," reveals Ricardo, who returns to Brazil in 2005.

Under- 19 National Boxing Championships Update!
Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania

141lber Jeffrey Pelen Jr. from Waianae lost to Jeremy Bryan from Sumner, South Carolina 23-15 in the Semifinals, Pelen receives Bronze Medal. Sumner won the 2004 National Golden Gloves earlier this year. He also won in the finals. Superheavyweight Keenyn Pahio from the Kakaako Gym lost in the Championship Finals against Nagy Aquilera from New York via Puerto Rico by RSC- OS (20 points), Pahio wins silver medal, Aquilera is the Puerto Rican National Champion and a junior champion with 78 bouts. Excellent tounament, USA-Boxing gave us free, a great hotel room which had one bedroom, one living room and 2 full bathrooms, along with $15 a day for meals.

Most of all the 2 boxers got experience and we went down one day to train in Reading, Penn. with Kermit Citron trainers Marshall Kaufmann. There was also a training camp at the hotel we were staying John Ruiz, Sechew Powell, Jaidon Codrington, Paul "the Punisher" Williams and others were working out in the hidden training room, John Ruiz said he'll be boxing Andrew Golota. John Ruiz really is a quiet man, he matches his name. Travis Simms, I think he's the WBC or WBA champion and is like 24-0. He was also working out at the Hotel.

Gracie debuts in K-1 fighting BJ Penn

Far from the rings since last February, when defeated Hayato Mach Sakurai at Pride Bushido 2, Rodrigo Gracie has already an opponent defined to his returned to MMA. After switching Pride at K-1, Rodrigo will debut at Japanese tournament facing former Ultimate Fighting Championship champion, BJ Penn. According to the Gracie, everything is set to the showdown, but the date. The options are November 20 or December 31.

Source: Tatame

Penn vs. Gracie, Yoshida vs. Gracie

Rodrigo Gracie vs.

WILL ENSON RETURN IN BUSHIDO?

MMAWeekly's Scott Petersen reports from Japan that there are two published reports that say Enson Inoue could return to Pride as soon as the Bushido show.

According to one Japanese publication, Inoue has been in talks with DSE the last two days. Pride officials were not available for comment on Thursday.

One Japanese paper said that Pride contacted Enson and that DSE wants him to fight in just two weeks for the Pride Bushido show that is taking place on October 14th. As far as an opponent goes, no names have been given as of yet.

GOMI HEADLINES BUSHIDO CARD

Pride Bushido's card is just a few weeks away and Takanori Gomi is headlining the card. On the Pride FC website they conducted this interview with the japanese fighter.

"Takanori Gomi will be the first light-heavyweight to ever headline a PRIDE event in the upcoming PRIDE BUSHIDO 5 on October 14 in Osaka. Gomi's overwhelming power and techniques have brought him 3 back-to-back KO victories. Now he's got his eyes set on destroying the "Crazy Horse" and fighting in PRIDE's New Year's Eve show.

Pride Fighting Championships: Have you gained weight? Your face is round.

Takanori Gomi: No, I haven't. I've been doing a lot of striking sparring recently and my face is swollen.

Pride: That's good to hear, I guess. Back on topic, you'll be the main event this time.

Gomi: I'm really excited. I tried to fight all of my matches until now as if they were the main event so I don't think I will have any problems actually being in the main event this time. I plan on winning.

Pride: Do you think the main event is a special position?

Gomi: I guess it's the best position. All positions have a role to play, whether it's the first fight or the last fight. From a fan's point of view, they want the last fight to be exciting and leave them with a good feeling when they go home. In that sense, it's a special position.

Pride: You've fought as the main event in Shooto before. Is it different this time?

Gomi: There are 2 different kinds of "main event." You can be ranked the highest and fight in the main event, or you can be the most entertaining.

Pride: How's your motivation?

Gomi: This fight will be the biggest for me this year. Everyone has said that my fights were good and the fans' response to my fights has been great. I feel very motivated to finish the year with good results.

Pride: I've heard that your opponent this time, "Crazy Horse", is a wild fighter.

Gomi: If he wants to trade strikes, I won't lose. I'll keep pressure on him.

Pride: It seems that if you have a good fight and win, of course, you will probably fight in the New Year's Eve show as well.

Gomi: That's what I'm after, of course.

Pride: There are also plans for a BUSHIDO Grand Prix next year.

Gomi: I'll think about next year when it comes. This year I want to move up. I was planning on taking a rest after the 3 victories but if there is a chance of moving up, I won't let it slip by. Each fight has its own meaning and motivation for me.

Pride: You've been fighting at a really high pace this year, compared to the past. How has that affected you?

Gomi: I'm really happy to be able to fight. I can fight about once every two months.

Pride: That's how prepared you are?

Gomi: Yes. I don't have any physical problems. I played around a lot after the July 19th match so I don't want to wait around any longer for a fight. (laughing) I had nice summer vacation.

Pride: Have you thought about gaining weight?

Gomi: I'm 73kg so I don't think there is a need to try to raise it this year.

Pride: This fight will be in Osaka. What do you think about Osaka?

Gomi: Nothing much. I'm a little uncomfortable with the Osaka crowd. (laughing) I can relax much more in Nagoya. Nagoya is more refined, while Osaka is extreme. I am very happy that I will be able to fight in the Osaka Castle Hall, though.

Pride: After winning 3 consecutive matches in BUSHIDO, what does the PRIDE ring mean to you?

Gomi: It's brilliant. That's hard to explain but the reaction is so great that it really motivates you. I want my 4th fight to be even more exciting than the last 3. I've got a great balance in my training and will be in my best shape on fight day.

Pride: Do you feel that you have already brought out 100% of your potential?

Gomi: No. I don't want people to say that I was only able to win because I didn't have the pressure of the main event on me and my positions were easier. I'm going to fight hard in the main event. I don't want to just play it safe and scratch out a win.

Pride: Do you have a message for the fans?

Gomi: I hope you will all feel satisfied after seeing the main BUSHIDO event. It's going to be a tough fight so you should definitely watch!

K-1 GP TV Rating
By Jeremy Wall, MMA Chronicles

The September 25th airing of the K-1 Grand Prix Opening Round on Fuji TV did a 19.6 rating.

The highest quarter hour was a 26.5 for Bonjasky vs. Akebono (credit: puroresupower.com). This is up from the shows in June, which did 13.9 and 13.2 ratings respectively, but down from the March 27th show with Akebono vs. Musashi, which did a 20.6.

Overall I'd say it was a decent rating, which shows the drawing power of the K-1 and K-1 Grand Prix names in Japan because they didn't exactly have any hot matches on the card. Akebono still had some drawing power left in the tank for this show, because the quarter hour peak for his fight against Bonjasky here was higher than the peak rating for the final match of the Grand Prix last December (which was Bonjasky vs. Musashi at 25.2). It's way down from Akebono's peak rating against Musashi of 37.2 in March, though, which shows the damage that has been done to Akebono's drawing power this year, because I think months ago he would have had a better chance of drawing a higher rating against Bonjasky than he would against Musashi.

THE INSIDE WORD - MEZGER VS. ORTIZ UPDATE

Greetings MMA fans, Scoop McTroll here, bringing you The Inside Word, the latest news, rumors and gossip in the MMA scene. Todays Inside Word is that all is not well in the camp of former UFC Light Heavy Weight Champion Tito Ortiz. Sources close to Ortiz allege that he is experiencing some major personal problems and is allegedly estranged from his wife. Because of this they say he is not focused on his fight with Guy Mezger at all and has had a tough time during his training sessions. "He has the attitude that he can beat him because he beat him before, but I think he needs to train harder." said a source close to the UFC journeyman Ortiz. Whether this will impact on his performance against Mezger is yet to be seen. However, this rumor might be something that Guy Mezger will be interested to hear.

Extreme Challenge This Weekend
Catching Up With Jeff Curran!

by: Keith Mills

UFC vet Jeff Curran has been a busy man, with a recent win in ZST in Japan, his roll as promoter including XFO coming up in October, a recent marriage to his wife, and his team and gym. He is also a vet of many major established North American feeder show from HOOKnSHOOT to UCC to SuperBrawl. Since his UFC loss to Matt Serra he has gone on a three fight win streak that most recently found him in Japan.

KM: How do you look at that win in ZST? JC: I feel real good about it. Trying to get a little streak going. It’s nice when you spend all that time traveling to end it quick.

KM: That was only 0:44. Can you describe that fight? JC: Basically the guy stood in front of me and threw a couple punches. I just kind of felt him out and nothing landed. When he started running in on me I just…I’ve been boxing a lot now so I just threw a tight little left hook and it caught him right on the chin. From there he rushed a takedown, I think he was a little dazed or a little nervous. He ran in and I sunk a guillotine choke.

KM: This was your quickest fight since all the way backing 2001. Did anything change in your training that resulted in this shorter fight? You were saying something about picking up some boxing training? JC: I have been boxing for a couple years now. Just more so than ever to be able to doctor up my boxing skills and using them. I always went out even when I didn’t have much boxing skills, always went out and threw punches and stuff but there wasn’t really a method to it. Now I’m starting to trust my power and footwork so I’m starting to throw. I don’t know if it played a huge roll, more than anything it wasn’t a lucky shot but a left hook that affected it.

KM: So it’s not like you would say you were a different fighter since the Matt Serra fight (UFC 46). JC: No, actually I’m the same fighter since the Matt Serra fight, I kind of didn’t use my strategy with Matt Serra. I don’t know if I was a little too respectful of him, I should have thrown more punches. Same fighter, maybe a little more polished.

KM: Did you get a chance to see Kotani’s fight? He’s fighting in MFC so can you describe it? JC: Yes, it was right after mine so I was in the locker room watching it on TV. It was a typical Kotani fight; he gets it to the ground and goes for a foot lock. I think he’s a good fighter. He’s pretty well-rounded, I just don’t know how he is going to deal with getting punched in the face on the ground. He is used to being wide open.

KM: This was your first in Japan. JC: First win in MMA. I’ve gone Japan for a grappling tournament and a tag team match.

KM: Is this a change in strategy from trying to get back in the UFC to focusing on the Japanese market? JC: I would like to fight in Shooto but they are so weird about taking fighters. I got Monte Cox as my manager and he obviously does his best but it was just a fight. Now they are having an 8-man tournament that I qualified for basically. That is a 20-30 thousand pretty big deal and first round is November 3rd.

KM: I’ll catch up with you about that after the XFO event coming up when? JC: October 2nd.

KM: This is the second XFO event? JC: Third. Second was short and sweet, every fight ended in submission or knockout in the first round so it was over quick. I fought on the first one and now am fighting on the third one as headliner.

KM: Who is your XFO opponent? JC: Jason Dent.

KM: He just fought in APEX, right? JC: Yeah, went up and fought a natural 170 pounder Ryan Schultz. (Note: pictures from that fight are posted at http://malarky.udel.edu/~keith/2004/APEX/apex09050405.htm)

KM: So what do you think of fighting Dent? JC: I think it’s going to be a tough fight. I’m looking forward to it because his strengths are my strengths. I’m probably more trained than he is on the ground with my history and more trained supposedly with standup and ring experience as a thai fighter but I know I got a good shot if I just bring my game. This is his first fight at 145.

KM: What was XFO’s website? JC: www.x-fighting.tv. This thing is about to sell out. All we have left is general admission.

KM: When did tickets go on sale? JC: About two-and-a-half to three weeks ago.

KM: How was that difference between XFO 1 & 2 where you fought on 1 but not 2? I imagine it was les stressful since you weren’t fighting in 2. JC: It kind of was because Monte was in Korea that week so I had to run a show by myself with my other partner but I had two guys fighting in it too. The fights ended quick and we had low ticket sales nowhere near where we should have. We didn’t have real big headliners besides Kerry Schall/Kevin Jordan and that fight ended in like a minute when it was supposed to be a war. An hour and a half in and out. Concessions sales were down so the venue was upset.

KM: Anything else you want to get across about XFO 3 show?JC: There are going to be nineteen fights, it’s going to be fun. My teammate Bart (Palaszewski) is one to watch. He’s won nine of his last ten fights. I wish I wasn’t promoting it.

KM: Any sponsors to thank? JC: I just took on Sprawl. I’m making their Sprawl shorts the official shorts of my regular program here, my thai boxing and MMA program.

KM: I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about those shorts. Real comfortable…. JC: Thai boxers are wearing them, cross-trainers are loving them…Sprawl and actually Bad Breed. I’m Bad Breed’s first official sponsor as far as teams go. Sponsor my team and do a lot of video work and stuff like that. Good deal.

Straus will discuss what went on in court and what Penn's next move will be legally in the case. UFC President Dana White spoke with MMA Writer Loretta Hunt yesterday and said quote "BJ Penn is not the 170 pound champion, He's no longer a UFC fighter. His contract expired. He's a K-1 fighter. Maybe he'll win a title in the K-1 organization."

Straus will discuss those comments as well as the situation further today on MMAWeekly Radio with hosts Ryan Bennett and Frank Trigg at 9am Pacific/12 Noon Eastern at www.mmaweeklyradio.com

CRO COP VERSUS BARNETT AT HIGH OCTANE

LOS ANGELES, California – Two more bouts have been added to PRIDE FIGHTING's October 31st event HIGH OCTANE. Already headlining the event is the highly anticipated title bout between middleweight world champion Wanderlei Silva and top contender Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Now joining the fightcard will be Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic versus Josh "The Babyface Assassin" Barnett and Dan "Hollywood" Henderson versus Kazuhiro Nakamura.

Headlining the HIGH OCTANE fightcard is the highly anticipated title bout between middleweight world champion "The Axe Murderer" Wanderlei Silva and top contender Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. These two originally fought in November 2003 at FINAL CONFLICT, meeting in the finals of the middleweight Grand Prix tournament. That evening, both men defeated two opponents to reach the finals---Jackson TKO'd "The Iceman" Chuck Liddell and Silva won a decision over Hidehiko Yoshida. Once in the finals, both fighters battled fatigue, but it was Silva who came away with the Grand Prix championship via TKO. With the tournament behind them, Silva now puts his middleweight title on the line against Jackson. Will it be a repeat performance for the "The Axe Murderer" or redemption for "Rampage"?

Also on the fight card, the ever-dangerous Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic continues his climb up PRIDE FIGHTING's heavyweight ranks, this time taking on the "Babyface Assassin" Josh Barnett. After his stunning loss to Kevin "The Monster" Randleman in the opening round of the heavyweight Grand Prix tournament, "Cro Cop" has rededicated himself to his pursuit of the title with convincing victories over Hiromitsu Kanehara, Shungo Oyama, and Aleksander Emelianenko. Now, he faces one of his toughest opponents yet in Josh Barnett. Representing AMC Pankration out of Seattle, Washington, Barnett is 6'3/250 lbs and boasts an impressive record of 15-1 (including wins over Dan "The Beast" Severn, Semmy Schilt, Gan McGee, and Yuki Kondo). Most impressive on his resume is his victory over "The Natural" Randy Couture that won him the UFC heavyweight title at UFC 36.

Another bout on the HIGH OCTANE fightcard features Dan "Hollywood" Henderson versus Kazuhiro Nakamura. Fighting out of Temecula, California and representing Team Quest, Dan Henderson is one of the most dangerous middleweights in the world. His last match was a devastatingly quick knockout of the highly regarded Murilo Bustamante at FINAL CONFLICT 2003. His opponent at HIGH OCTANE will be the protégé of judo legend, Hidehiko Yoshida, Kazuhiro Nakamura. Like Henderson, Nakamura is coming off of a victory (via decision) over Murilo Bustamante. An up and coming middleweight, Nakamura has had great success thus far in his career with wins over Daniel Gracie and Dos Caras Jr.

More matches to be announced soon!

Darrell Gohlar first words

Coming to Brazil to train wrestling with Vitor Belfort, Darrell Gholar had a great change to work in Brazil when met Brazilian Top team leaders. When I found out that top fighters like Zé Mario Sperry, Murilo Bustamante, and Arona, to name a few, wanted to train wrestling with me I jumped at the chance," said Darrell. After a couple of years in Brazil, Darrell went to a really complicated situation. He was hospitalized in Rio de Janeiro and the doctors suspected of brain aneurysm. His situation inspired special treatment, which brought together all MMA community. Take a look at this exclusive with Darrel, directly from Chicago.

Have you been to the doctors in Chicago. What did they tell you?

I have been to the doctor here in Chicago. He said the bleeding in my head has stopped. The most important thing for me now is to take my medicine, rest and not get stressed out. The cause of my illness was all the years of fighting, wrestling and playing American football.

What do you think about the MMA community help?

The MMA community has been fabulous. I didn't know I had so many friends. Many, many people came to visit me in the hospital it was great to wake and see my students, friends and other people connected to the MMA world. Specially thanks to Artur Mariano and Carlos Baruckm who stood by me the entire time. I have been close with them since the first time we met.

Do you have plans to return to Brazil?

I love Brazil have plans to return to Brazil as soon as my doctors allow me to. I hope they let me travel in a few weeks. It's important that I get back as soon as possible, my students depend on me. I'm really upset that this happened. It really hurts me that I'm not there for my students.

You came to Rio to teach wrestling at BTT. How the invitation came out?

I first came to Brazil to teach wrestling to Vitor Belfort. Many of the guys from Brazilian Top Team trained at the same gym in Barra. When I found out that top fighters like Ze Mario Sperry, Murilo Bustamante, and Arona, to name a few, wanted to train wrestling with me I jumped at the chance. I worked with these guys for about 2 years. It was great working with that caliber athlete it makes the job fun and easier when you're working with top athletes who want to learn and who want to win.

Send a message to your fans, in Brazil and all around the globe.

I would like to thank everyone very much for there concern, and prayers during my illness. To all my students I would like to apologize for missing practices. I promise to be even more dedicated in our pursuit of excellence, when I return in a few weeks.

TIME TO PUT UP OR SHUT UP FOR BUSHIDO FIGHTERS

Prior to announcing some of the bouts for their October 31st High Octane show, DSE made a few announcements regarding their upcoming Pride Bushido 5 show on October 14th.

Along with a few of the bouts for the card, DSE President Nobuyuki Sakakibara let it be known that it is time for Bushido to grow its own wings, so to speak.

"This time, we've decided to refrain from using big names like Silva and Mirko," explained Sakakibara. "I want to have a Light-Welterweight Grand Prix tournament next year, running from Spring to Autumn.

This fight will allow these fighters to gain the attention of fans of their weight class and to see if they can get the world's attention. I want them to have a clear understanding of how many fans are willing to come out and see them."

DSE let it be known that they have carefully matched fighters in an attempt to provide exciting knockout laden fights. They also let the fighters know that they should be shooting for a spot on Pride's New Year's Eve extravaganza. Basically, they put the pressure on for the fighters to perform and prove their and Bushido's worth.

The fights announced for October 14th were the already known main event of Takanori Gomi and Charles "Crazy Horse" Bennett and the highly anticipated bout between Carlos Newton versus Ryo Chonan. Also announced were Hayato "Mach" Sakurai versus Crosley Gracie, Yasuhito Namekawa versus Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, "Sentoryu" Henry Miller versus Mal Foki, and Ikuhisa Minowa versus Ryuki Ueyama.
